Thistled Spring as a whole displays a rich progression – more textured and lush than the bandʼs previous two albums, it also captures the skillful interplay of the bandʼs current touring lineup of Ringle, violinist Nathan Crockett, cellist Catherine Odell, and multi-instrumentalist Sam Cooper. Lyrically Ringle continues to explore broken relationships, longing, and pain, but this album has an undercurrent of heat that translates to a thawing of frozen hearts, and music which rushes like spring torrents, all of which points to a resurgence of life after a hard winter.

From the first piano notes of the title track, Thistled Spring shows itself to be an album of rebirth, renewal, and fragile hope. The sun is out in the world evoked by this music, and in the first couple of songs it feels like the sun of early spring, glinting on a frosty river where the ice is just breaking up. “Thistled Spring” and “Starving Robins” both continue Ringleʼs trademark use of space in songwriting, but in this case the space is full of potential, like the spaces between drops of melting snow. GENRE : ROCK FILE UNDER: “T” Trans Am Most bands are too afraid to step up to the bat. They are scared that life is going to throw them different kinds of curve balls. But for more than fifteen years, Trans Am has fearlessly stepped up, taken their swings and thrown a few curve balls of their own. Few bands can say they’ve toured the Canadian mountains with TOOL, and fewer still can say they played their first tour opening for Tortoise. Trans Am a-la 2010 is a band of veterans unafraid to contradict themselves, confident in their identity even as confounding as that identity has been for their fans over the years.

Thing is a wreckage of sorts. The project was originally commissioned as a sci-fi, horror adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. When funding for that project fell apart, Trans Am forged on with their own album.

To capture the feeling of exhaustion and paranoia demanded by Thing, Trans Am remained at their recording studio until the early morning, occasionally exiting to run up and down the hills of San Francisco. All vocals were recorded during recovery from these sessions.

Thing features songs written entirely by the individual band members, as well as more collaborative efforts. Tracks were composed and/or recorded in Pescara, Italy; Portland, Oregon; Leon, France; San Francisco, California; Somewhere over the Pacific Ocean; London, England; Death Valley, California. The three members of the band currently reside in Portland, San Francisco and Washington, DC. For half of the tracks on Thing, Trans Am utilized a recording/composition strategy known as “Zombification.” Once a song was recorded, each of the band members (as well as anybody else in the studio at the time) would record multiple additional tracks without any reference to the previous ones.

The song then forgot itself - and was almost unlistenable. After cellaring the un-dead music for up to a year, Trans Am would begin to peel back the layers of the song, usually arriving at something completely different.

Thing was recorded between May 2008 and November of 2009, but the ongoing economic crisis did not affect the album’s lavish production budget.

Thing represents a further attempt by the band to further remove themselves not just from various indie-rock labels, but music itself. One of Thing’s requirements was that each track contain a completely non-musical element, preferably something with a sonic signature that was not even necessarily a sound.

With such history behind them, eight albums and last year’s live double LP and DVD What Day is it Tonight?, Trans Am’s record speaks for itself. The musical objective this time around was to create a piece of music that uses the sonic aesthetic of this specific era of gothic art-rock integrated with a more modern-classical approach to form and architecture. Formed in In the mid-'70s in New York by Bob Waxman (r.gtr), Arthur Alexander (l.gtr), Paddy Lorenzo (bass), and Donny Jackrel (drums), later replaced by Jet Harris, The POPPEES were one of the creators and the embodiment of what soon came to be known as the "Power Pop" sound of the late 70s. Their style could best be described as inspired by everything in pop music just before the Merseybeat scene and the Beatles unloaded on the world.

The POPPEES cut two classic singles for Bomp, "If She Cries/Love of The Loved" (the latter track produced by Craig Leon of the Ramones fame) in 1975, and in 1976 "Jealousy/She's Got It," produced by Cyril Jordan, of the legendary FLAMIN' GROOVIES, then Poppees label mates. The band disbanded shortly after the release of "Jealousy", and Bob Waxman and Paddy Lorenzo went on to form the BOYFRIENDS, while Arthur Alexander and Jet Harris formed SORROWS and cut two albums for a CBS Records imprint in the early '80s.

This long overdue anthology finally gives this notable and highly underrated seventies Power Pop band their due, elegantly chronicling the POPPEES short but influential role in the history of the New York New Wave scene of the late 70's. While anchored around their two classic Bomp singles, "Pop Goes the Anthology" features never before released recordings, including demos, early live recordings, and culminating with a rip-roaring live performance at CBGB. It is complete with liner notes and unpublished photos. THE WAY THAT IT WAS is the debut solo release from PIERRE DE REEDER, founding member of the venerable Los Angeles indie-pop quartet RILO KILEY. Likened to singer-songwriters such as Harry Nilsson, de Reeder evokes an intimate relationship with the listener... seemingly the result of the vocal-centric nature of his wide, heartfelt subject matter, and his penchant for strong melodic structure. And while the record itself features notable guest performances, many songs see much or all of the instrumentation being played by de Reeder.

Recorded in no particular hurry over a period of about two years, the record took shape in various locations including Pierre's home and the Kingsize studios in Eagle Rock, where he found collaboration with producer Dave Trumfio (Built to Spill, Wilco, Grandaddy). With a genre lying somewhere between classic pop, rock, and folk, these songs fall into a wonderfully indefinable category of both familiar and nothing you've heard before.

OVERVIEW: In an overzealous effort to make the best of unemployment, Prizzy Prizzy Please have gone plaid with Chroma Cannon. With a 30th century aesthetic, the album rockets through hyperactive hits that hope to imbue melodic noise punk (reminiscent of Parts and Labor, Lightning Bolt) with the spirit of fourth-quarter pump-up jams by Van Halen and the E Street Band.

Though Chroma Cannon prominently displays Prizzy Prizzy Please’s technical prowess, the songs are thematically fixated on science fantasy and thoughtful, unpretentious humor. The song “Pacific Garbage Patch” is a fictional first-person tale of a shopping bag surfing the waves to join the rest of his buddies in the Pacific Trash 2 Vortex1 ; and “Large Hadron Collider” is the story of ambitious Swiss physicists who have an epiphanic encounter with a man from the future who warns them not to flush the Earth into a black hole.

Prizzy Prizzy Please, presently stationed in a Chicago basement, got their start in the basements of Bloomington, Indiana. Since 2007 they have been relentlessly campaigning across the United States in a decomposing van, enthusiastically making their way through a network of unruly house shows and five-band bills where they are consistently odd men out.

Standing out has worked well for this heavy metal band of colorful eccentrics. They have no guitarist, no decent equipment, and are fronted by a timid alto saxophonist who howls like Bon Scott. Even so, time and time again, Prizzy Prizzy Please have won over wideranging audiences with their inexhaustible energy and manic showmanship.

Reverie features two brand new compositions, “Lit A Dawn” and “Embraced” on Side A and an amazing side-long interpretation of the Arvo Pärt classic “Für Alina” on Side B. Irisarri has long been a student and listener of Arvo Pärt’s approach to composition and has always been profoundly inspired by Part’s tintinnabuli style. While working on a special “Day of the Dead” performance last year for the Seattle Art Museum Irisarri decided to perform some Arvo Pärt pieces with pianist Kelly Wise. While Wise performed “Fur Alina” on piano, Irisarri took some liberties with the piece and added new arrangements for drone guitar and electronics. The performance inspired Irisarri to return to his home studio and create new compositions to accompany the “Für Alina” piece. Reverie features piano, drone, electronics, and bowed/treated guitar. Irisarri began experimenting with guitar bowing techniques on the Hopes and Past Desires release and continues the approach here.

Irisarri will follow the release of Reverie with other releases on Miasmah and Room40. He also continues work on his Ghostly International project The Sight Below and has recently recorded with Goldmund for an upcoming release of Erik Satie pieces.

WOODHANDS ANNOUNCE US TOUR DATES Woodhands have announced the extension of their North American tour in support of Remorsecapade. After heading across, Canada, they will be hitting the United States, including dates at SxSW. Tour dates are listed at the end of this update!

Remorsecapade will be available on CD and vinyl in the US on March 23, 2010. The vinyl features a two colour, hand-silkscreened sleeve, and was pressed on 180gram vinyl in an extremely limited quantity of 300.
