anticon.
Anticon’s founders came together in early 1998 as a loose group of longtime friends and near-strangers bound by an abiding love of underground rap’s freewheeling poetics and the collage aesthetics of traditional hip-hop. They were Midwestern art school drop-outs, Northeastern would-be rap moguls, and young Californian nomads who pulled up their respective roots in order to sow the seeds of their own artist-driven movement. Anticon has since evolved from a cult-revered collective to a diverse and thriving independent label, but that momentum is still felt and the guiding principal the same: advancing the cause of good music, one release at a time. The label’s original architects continue to shape Anticon, not only as some of its most innovative artists, but as curators, A&R-ing a constantly growing international cadre of music-makers to whom traditional genre lines do not apply. The creative influences of the owners are as disparate as their hometowns, and the Anticon name today stands as much for radical hip-hop as it does for pioneering electronic music, left-field rock and outsider pop. It’s this well-tended mix of breadth and focus that makes Anticon not only one of the few imprints born of the ’90s indie rap boom to weather the years, but a vibrant and viable taste-making force for many more to come.

Public Image Ltd (PiL) release their 10th studio album on 4th September. The 11-track album follows the huge critical success of 2012’s ‘This is PiL’, the band’s first album in 17 years. Commenting on the new album, John Lydon says, “Buy now while stocks last.” Widely regarded as one of the most innovative and influential bands of all time, PiL’s music and vision earned them 5 UK Top 20 singles and 5 UK Top 20 albums. With a shifting line-up and unique sound, John Lydon guided the band from their debut album ‘First Issue’ in 1978 through to 1992’s ‘That What Is Not’. After a 17 year hiatus, Lydon reactivated PiL in 2009. Last year the band returned to Steve Winwood’s Wincraft studio in the Cotswolds to record this new album. ‘What The World Needs Now…’ precedes the start of their 23-date UK/Europe tour, which kicks off in Glasgow on 18th September. The European tour will be followed by North America dates. See www.pilofficial.com for ticket links. ‘What The World Needs Now…’ is self-funded by PiL and released on PiL’s own label ‘PiL Official’ Public Image Ltd are: John Lydon - After fronting the Sex Pistols, John Lydon formed Public Image Ltd in 1978. Outside of PiL John has released several solo records and collaborations. He also brings quality TV to the masses and has recently released the autobiography ‘Anger is an Energy: My Life Uncensored’. Lu Edmonds - Multi instrumentalist and former guitarist in The Damned, Lu joined PiL in 1986 recording and playing on the album ‘Happy?’ and co-writing the album ‘9’, adding yet another dimension to the PiL sound. Bruce Smith - Drummer in The Pop Group and formerly of The Slits Bruce became percussionist for PiL in 1986 playing and recording on the albums ‘Happy?’ and ‘9’. Seen as a drumming virtuoso, Bruce brought his unique style into the fold. Scott Firth - A bass player/multi instrumentalist that has collaborated and played with a variety of top musicians and bands including Steve Winwood, John Martyn and Elvis Costello.

Keyboard player and howler John Wesley Myers, aka James Leg, (Black Diamond Heavies, The Immortal Lee County Killers, Cut In The Hill Gang) is back with a new brew of punk-ass blues. The son of a Texas preacher, raised in the South on gospel music, James Leg has cut his new album in Chattanooga, Cincinnati, and Detroit, with a little help from his friends (Andy Jody, Johnny Walker, Left Lane Cruiser, Jim Diamond and others). “Below The Belt” is a record that hits where it matters : Straight to your heart, and down to your pelvis. It’s the kind of music that ain’t pretty but makes you feel good. Rock n’ roll all night long!

Todd Rundgren, Emil Nikolaisen, Hans-Peter Lindstrøm remixed by Stereolab, High Llamas, Erol Alkan and EYE (Boredoms) Tracklisting: Side A Runddans (Erol Alkan remix)
Todd Rundgren/Emil Nikolaisen/Hans-Peter Lindstrøm's “Runddans" was launched to wide acclaim in May this year. As a compendium of a release to the album, we invited some of our favourite artists to interpret the Runddans material, making their own versions of our piece.
Side B Put Your Arms Around Me (Stereolab & The High Llamas remix) As Todd was doing vocal takes during our very first and Lind (Bifrost mix by EYE) initial studio sessions for "Runddans", he claimed he would "try to do "ba-ba's", meaning vocal harmonies, like Stereolab”. It became obvious that both Todd, Emil, HansPeter and the label all had a soft spot for Stereolab's gleeful eccentricities. In remix- response, Stereolab joined their friends The High Llamas, resulting in five minutes of classic lounge bossa bliss! Erol Alkan is a big fan of Todd. We thought it could be interesting to hear how he would take this a mastodon piece to the dancefloors. Erol delivered the goods and came up with a 10- minute disco epic. In the words of Mixmag: “It’s a joy to hear classic Lindstrom synths manipulated in such fine fashion putting this rerub up with Erol’s best" For all of us involved, EYE from Boredoms is the master of cosmic/psychedelic. This remix is very special to us. EYE’s take on our music is pure magic!

About More than during any period of its history previous or since, NYC hip-hop in the ’90s fixated on streets-centric authenticity. Being “real” – musically, ethically, biographically – was paramount. From their first release, however, Brooklyn’s Jigmastas proudly defined themselves by nobody’s measure of validity but their own. While others chased the so-called real, DJ Spinna and Kriminul claimed “Beyond Real,” the title of their 1996 independent single on the label of the same name, a debut gem that established their M.O. as purveyors of sonic sophistication and everyman truths. Formed in 1991 in the County of Kings, this DJ/producer-emcee combo in the tradition of Gang Starr and Pete Rock & CL Smooth showed enough promise to spark considerable, though ultimately unconsummated, major label interest. Such apparent setbacks would prove fortuitous, though, as the Jay I Gees found themselves amongst the important participants in a burgeoning NYC underground hip-hop movement alongside pre-Rawkus indie crews like Co Flow, Natural E and Bobbito Garcia’s Fondle ’Em camp. As subsequent releases more than aptly demonstrated (the metaphorical minded “Chandon”; a “World Is Yours”-esque paean to self-determination, “Iz You Dee”; the purist manifesto “Hip-Hop” etc.) being beyond real wasn’t just a philosophical ethos but a musical one as well – Spinna’s predilection for Moog synth riffs, vocal chorales, and other inventively chopped and diced samplescapes complementing Krim’s gravelly verses with an otherworldly air.

Jigmastas dropped a single LP – 2001’s Infectious – during the duo’s most active period. But the collection of non-album material that forms the core of this fine sequel (or prequel given the bonus inclusion of so many essential early singles) that you now hold in your possession serves as a reminder of the potency and timelessness of their talents. From Spinna’s classic breakbeat dissections on “Lyrical Fluctuation 2000” through Kriminul’s effortlessly fluid performance on “Thief’s Theme” some might call this that vintage NY boom-bap. A more accurate, and complimentary, descript is that it simply sounds like the Jigmastas. Long may they keep on rockin’. Key Selling Points • BBE is proud to present Jigmastas , lovingly re- mastered in full, expanded form, along with added bonus material & rare B sides • Album features Mos Def, Pharoahe Monch, Talib Kweli & Mr Complex • Full participation of Jigmasta’s producer DJ Spinna, available for interview

Release date: September 4th 2015 Imagori is the first collaborative recording from musical trailblazers Hans-Joachim Roedelius (of Cluster, Harmonia et al.) and Christoph H. Müller (Gotan Project et al.). Electronic beats, buoyant piano melodies, percussive elements: an album with atmospheric density that is warm and harmonious throughout – although it thrives on clear contrasts.
Beat-oriented compositions meet melodic improvisations. The articulation often revels in simultaneous legato and staccato elements; Müller’s beats create a framework with a straight-out pumping downbeat groove, while Roedelius’s piano somnambulistically moves through the tracks. The upshot is an album that comes across as self-contained and pleasantly cohesive – each and every second is enthralling! www.groenland.com
Tami Neilson Dynamite! With a soulful voice straight from the golden age of country and rockabilly music, Tami Neilson has been described as “A red-hot honky-tonker, somewhere between Patsy Cline and Wanda Jackson with perhaps just a little bit of Peggy Lee sophistication.” (–Nick Bollinger, NZ National Radio). Singing her heart out along endless roads and stages, from her days as a young girl in Canada touring with the Neilson Family band, opening for the likes of Johnny Cash, to her full blossoming in New Zealand as a formidable talent in her own right, Tami Neilson has won the Tui Award (New Zealand Grammy) for each of her past four albums. Tami has been awarded the APRA Silver Scroll, New Zealand’s most prestigious music award for excellence in songwriting, for her song “Walk (Back To Your Arms)”. The award was previously won by Lorde for Royals. Dynamite! reached #1 on the NZ Music Charts, iTunes Country Charts and the New Zealand Independent Music Chart. Tami is thrilled to finally have the album come out in her home country: “I am over the moon to finally have my album released where my life and my music originated, the home where my heart is constantly pulled like a magnet, even from the other side of the world. I’ve been hugely blessed to have New Zealand embrace my music and regard it with enough merit to include me among their esteemed musicians, but, have always hoped that someday I’d be heard by the people and the country who made me and shaped me and gave me the confidence to fly in the first place” Accolades for Tami Neilson: • • • •

INFORMATION:
Planet Mu’s 20th Anniversary Compilation: Unreleased tracks from across 20 years on 2 formats. A deluxe 50-track DVD-style portrait boxset with a 100 page book in a thick-card slipcase, or a 32 track 2CD in a jewel case of the first two discs. Planet Mu is a label that has always survived on its own very independent terms. For 20 years it's existed both on the fringes and in the centre of emerging electronic music, from IDM and breakcore to dubstep and grime and lately to footwork, which it took a chance on, opening it up to the world through the two Bangs & Works compilations. It also has a strong history of connecting the dots in between those genres by supporting idiosyncratic artists, from label stalwart Venetian Snares to Kuedo, Machinedrum, Boxcutter, Vex'd, Falty DL, Luke Vibert, Ital, Jlin and Mr. Mitch to name just a few. Run by Mike Paradinas, who under the name µ-Ziq was one of the first wave of producers pushing the musical envelope in the wake of house and techno's initial burst of inspiration, Planet Mu is an established engine of creativity and enquiry, with one foot in the pop world, and a sense of fun that never lets its experimentation disappear into exclusivity and snobbery. To celebrate their 20th Anniversary, Planet Mu have organised a 50-track, triple CD compilation of both old and new unreleased tracks and remixes packaged in a deluxe dvd-style boxset complete with a 100 page book charting the history of the label, with insight from artists and staff, written by electronic music writer Rory Gibb. The music on CDs one and two is mainly from the current decade, with contributions from Kuedo, Machinedrum, John Wizards, Ital Tek, Remarc, Boxcutter, RP Boo, John T. Gast, Jlin and new signing Herva to name but a few. They're colourful, broad and adventurous rides across the roster that will impress and excite any fan of electronic music and are a strong reminder of the consistent quality and broad mindedness of the label too. CD three features more of the older guard, dipping back into the roster from the late nineties and early 2000s with a range of noisier, knottier contributions from artists including Jega, Neil Landstrumm, Speedy J, Shitmat, Leafcutter John, Hellfish, Datach'i and Hrvatski, it's the perfect compilation for hardcore fans and a brilliant and friendly introduction to the label for curious newcomers too.

HELENA HAUFF ‘DISCRETE DESIRES’ Street Date: 9/4/2015 WDNT014 / WDNTCD014
Making her recording debut just two years ago in 2013, Helena’s first release was a 3-track EP – Actio Reactio - on Actress’ Werkdiscs imprint. She has since partnered with PAN (as Black Sites alongside F#x), Lux Rec, Bunker sublabel Panzerkreuz and Texan cassette imprint Handmade Birds to share her overtly analogue excursions into techno’s shadowy fringes, improvised and recorded in her bedroom studio in Hamburg. Fully embracing her love of hardware, Helena joined James Dean Brown’s legendary electronic improv outfit Hypnobeat (founded back in 1983) in 2013, blazing a trail across Europe with their intense polyrhythmic jam sessions on the TB-303, TR-707 and TR-808. “I have the feeling it’s more one-to-one – you do something and then the machine reacts. The machine has its own mind too, so it gives something back.” Ten tracks deep, Discreet Desires is the embodiment of Helena’s deep-seated beliefs about music as a radical force and unifying movement. Something that is evident from her growing stature as a selector and her enthusiasm for musical subcultures from punk to nu wave, industrial, krautrock and avant garde electro – all of which were rooted in raw experimentation and existed in polar opposition to the perfect, polished mainstream. “Perfection is pretty boring. It doesn’t really exist anyway… only in death. Death is perfect.” HIGHLIGHTS • 2LP includes Download Code

OFFSHORE ‘OFFSHORE’
Street Date: 9/4/2015 BD251 / BDCD251 Two years on from the sad and untimely passing of Ewan Robertson aka Offshore, his label Big Dada can announce the release of a last album from the Aberdonian musician and designer. The tracks for the new record, 'Offshore' were all more or less completed before his death in 2012. His family, his partner and the label have pieced the album together as close to his original intentions as they could manage, to create a suite of music which in its openness, beauty, humour and joyfulness, both hints at what Ewan could have gone on to achieve, and celebrates what a unique and lovely human being and musician he was. In addition, artists including Ikonika, Amon Tobin, Blue Daisy, Slugabed, Mamiko Moto, Lockah and Enchante have all contributed remixes and expect videos and photographs from long time collaborators. The sadness felt by those who knew and loved Ewan is still very real, but this record is a chance to celebrate what a unique and talented individual he was. In that spirit, please enjoy your first taste of the record, "Off Peak.” All profits from the record are to go to the Marfan Trust at his families choosing, it was the condition that affected Ewan.

Writing for the album began three months prior to the trip and was heavily influenced by the historic soul and gospel music that has come out of FAME Studios. The new LP is firmly rooted in the history of southern soul music and pays tribute to FAME Studio greats like Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin, Duane Allman, and Percy Sledge. The result is a fresh take on a classic sound that showcases all 10 pieces of The Nightowls’ ensemble, from horns and guitar to the organ and soulful vocals. “Nobody But You” opens the record, introducing listeners to the full ensemble while featuring background vocals from the Shoal Sisters, Marie Lewey and Cindy Walker. Lead single “Get Up!” encourages audiences to become participants in lead singer Ryan Harkrider and the band’s “dynamic, dancing-in-the-street” (Texas Music Magazine) live show while “Highline” features FAME Studios guitarist Will MacFarlane on slide guitar and pairs dark, passionate lyrics with an emotional vocal performance. "Don't Wanna Say Goodbye" highlights the interplay between the horn section and background vocalists and "Sad Sad Song" features a soaring string section. "Avalon" was written in the van on the way to the studio, tells the story of the band's journey to FAME, and celebrates the studio's southern rock legacy. ‘Fame Sessions’ is The Nightowls’ follow-up to their 2014 debut album, 'Good As Gold’, which the Austin Chronicle hailed as "suave, energetic, blue-eyed soul" and named one of the Top 10 of the year at the annual Austin Chronicle Music Awards. Austin Monthly called The Nightowls a “Band To Watch,” and Texas Music Magazine called the album "a smooth addictive blend of pop, R&B and funk that will delight the band's dance-happy fans."

Last year, the Austin-based, 10-piece band The Nightowls packed up their van and drove 1,390 miles from Austin to Muscle Shoals, AL to record their new album at the iconic FAME Studios. Joined by David Hood and Spooner Oldham from the original FAME Studios house band The Swampers, the band tapped into the studio’s roots during the three days spent recording eight new songs for their forthcoming LP, ‘Fame Sessions,' out September 4th (Super Sonic Sounds).

Honesty Box
Taxidermists are two friends from Massachusetts. Guitarist and singer Cooper Handy and drummer Salvadore McNamara have been playing together since they met (on Myspace) in 2007. Honesty Box is the compulsive, insistent music of 21-year-old kids who grew up on Polvo not Pearl Jam, the Kinks not Kanye: eight propulsive tracks which never lose momentum, convulsing into ecstatic sludgy outbursts when you least expect it. This record captures the spirit of Western Mass for a new generation. This is the fourth Taxidermists LP, but the first available outside Massachusetts, and the first in Hi-Fi. Written on a farm in Hadley, perfected on tour, and recorded by Elisha Wiesner at his Studio Double Platinum on Martha’s Vineyard. Mastered by the legendary Bob Weston in Chicago.

Gustafer Yellowgold’s Dark Pie Concerns Gustafer Yellowgold is a friendly fellow who came from the Sun and landed in the Minnesota woods. Morgan Taylor developed the “musical moving storybook” Gustafer Yellowgold experience as equal parts pop rock concert and hand-drawn cartoon movie.
Gustafer Yellowgold’s Dark Pie Concerns, the seventh and final installment in the award-winning series of Gustafer Yellowgold “Musical Moving Book” DVD/CD sets by illustrator/songwriter/performer Morgan Taylor is set for release on September 4. (Apple-Eye Productions, $19.99. Run time approx. 80 minutes, total content. For ages 4 and up.) Featuring a musical format Taylor calls “All-Ages Alternative,” the Gustafer Yellowgold experience is equal parts acoustic rock concert and minimally animated movie. The songs, by themselves, are loved by people of all ages whose taste runs to alternative music, while the video elements unfold in graphic novel fashion, providing an enhancement that’s particularly appealing to kids. Gustafer Yellowgold’s Dark Pie Concerns continues the earthly adventures of Gustafer Yellowgold, a friendly fellow who came from the Sun and landed in the Minnesota woods. This DVD/CD set presents the question, “what is our relationship to food beyond eating it?” Each animated video navigates a different culinary related scenario. A fat steak on a black eye, onion voodoo dolls, and a love poem to a perfect piece of fruit are each represented in this ten-song collection, where the track list reads more like a café menu than alt-pop record jacket.

The DVD/CD begins with the metaphorically bright, acoustic guitar & talking drum groove of “Sunny Side” that recalls a summery, Todd Rundgren-era XTC. Gustafer’s best pal Forrest Applecrumbie the Pterodactyl is trapped in a baking nightmare to the Bee Gees/Daft Punk inspired grooves of “Dark Pie”. “Cinnamon Tap” sees Gustafer enjoying his Seuss-ian, garden syrup-dispenser over a moody, euphoric Harry Nilsson-type lilt. Recorded in upstate NY, Dark Pie Concerns is the first collaborative production effort between Morgan Taylor and GRAMMY winning producer, Dean Jones. (Okee Dokee Brothers’ 2012, Can You Canoe)

JAMES HUNTER SIX IF I ONLY KNEW b/w HEARTBREAK DAP - 1 0 9 2 A/B Since the LP release of James Hunter's jaw-dropping 'Minute By Minute' we've been flooded with requests from DJ's across the nation for a 45 rpm pairing. It takes a special kind of record to warrant a 45 two years after street date but this, ladies and gentlemen, is a long player of such quality. Due to the suffocating frequency of passionate emails, inquiries and suggestions, we had to outsource the gargantuan, albeit monotonous, task of compiling these queries into an easy-to-read pie char t. The results were staggeringly close so after some counsel via our local watering hole, we picked what is surely a two-sider of unparalleled character. It is our distinct privilege to present to you: Hear tbreak b/w If I Only Knew, by The James Hunter Six. If you don't like this, you don't have good taste in music. LOOK OUT for James and Co.'s new album early next year on DAPTONE RECORDS!

Eleven full-lengths, four EPs, three compilations and one live album into the game, Tommy Keene is in the midst of a creative roll that, in the space of just six years, has yielded four studio albums — five, if you count 2010 career overview Tommy Keene You Hear Me: A Retrospective 1983-2009. The rock savant’s new offering, Laugh in the Dark, is the latest in a fruitful partnership with North Carolina’s Second Motion Records label, due out September 4, 2015, and comprises ten fresh Keene nuggets meticulously assembled over the course of six months, a period in which his “unobvious covers” record Excitement at Your Feet saw release to unanimous critical acclaim. Laugh in the Dark, while characterized as always by Keene’s distinctive flair for melodic guitar-driven rock and brawny power pop, marks a subtle shift in the artist’s songwriting modus operandi in that unlike previously, the material is all of recent vintage. As he explains, “There were always songs left over from the last project or ideas that hadn’t been fleshed out. What I’ve done in the past before starting to write for a new record would be to demo a cover or resurrect an old song of mine that I liked but never made the final cut for an album. But all the songs on Laugh in the Dark were started and finished last year from April through October. I started with a completely fresh slate on this one.” With the arrival of Laugh in the Dark Tommy Keene offers yet more evidence that he is like an athlete rediscovering his prime. Only in this artist’s case, he never left it.

MIDAS FALL ‘The Menagerie Inside’ MONOTREME RECORDS CD MONO98CD 5065002002921 LP MONO98VNL 5065002002914
UK-based quartet MIDAS FALL have carved a distinctive and captivating sound, fusing elements of electronica, post-rock, shoegaze and alternative rock with progressive and gothic undertones to create taut, shimmering soundscapes led by the hauntingly melancholic vocals of Elizabeth Heaton. The eclectic collective – founding members Heaton and Rowan Burn (guitar, piano) with Steven Pellatt (drums/percussion/piano) and Chris Holland (bass) – has spent the past year composing the follow-up to their 2013issued Wilderness full-length. Titled The Menagerie Inside, MIDAS FALL’s third long player was captured live at Red Wall Studios, mastered by Seattle legendary engineer Ed Brooks (Pearl Jam, Caspian, Fleet Foxes et al) and offers up ten sprawling tracks of sonic enormity. From the sorrowing echo of wilting violins in “Counting Colours,” to the emotionally gutting close of “Circus Performer,” the forty-six-minute epic is as heavy sonically as it is cerebrally. An introspective journey through dark and light, The Menagerie In-
side is at once graceful, urgent and star-gazingly compelling. Cascading riffs ebb, flow and surge into rich, ethereal piano crescendos, the weight of Heaton’s delicate angelic resonance adding depth to her every echoing word. With The Menagerie Inside, MIDAS FALL manifests a sound and atmosphere that’s organic, emotionally stirring and habitually awe-inspiring, further verifying the strength of their songcraft and musicianship, Vinyl is limited edition 180-gram vinyl LP in translucent purple with black splatter, with a free album CD and poster inside.

“Shilpa Ray Blends Her Indian Classical Training with Punk Rock to Make Pop Perfection” — WNYC, Studio 360 “Still, at a time when rock’n’roll’s influence is waning, Ray’s defiant humor is a welcome and bracing change of pace. Savage plays like a middle finger flown in the face of long-cherished conventions, or perhaps that monkey-avatar flinging its own poop at not-so-innocent bystanders. “ — Pitchfork “Brooklyn goth-rockabilly singer Shilpa Ray has all the goods: the power to rip through your chest and tear your heart to shreds, rock your socks clean off, and make you weep silly tears. The black-clad Brooklynvia-Jerz contrarian has fired up NYC’s DIY crap-holes with piss ‘n’ vinegarfueled salvos and witty wordplay since the mid-00s, and now she’s taken her cabaret-punk act to the rising Northern Spy label.” — Noisey
SHILPA RAY LAST YEAR’S SAVAGE
“Picture a 2015 Nancy Sinatra coming from a Hindu family, and you have about half of what you need to process Ray’s music. “ — Consequence of Sound “On Savage, manning her trusty harmonium, she’s a torch singer run through a punk-rock filter.” — Village Voice “This looks like the year that everyone finds out just how good she is.” — Radio New Zealand National “Shilpa’s voice is one of those Winehouse-ish honey-dripping-off-aspoon drawls, part Country, part Jazz, and she could sing names out of a
