ELI PAPERBOY REED MY WAY HOME (CD/LP/DIGITAL) 6/10/16

Eli Paperboy Reed has returned to the studio and crafted a new album that is at once back-to-basics and startlingly current. Album opener “Hold Out” kicks things off at full-volume, embodying the classic gospel ethos that everything’s going to work out fine if you just keep the faith. It’s a notion that turns up throughout the record, from the title track “My Way Home” to “Tomorrow’s Not Promised” to “Movin’,” and it reflects Reed’s resilient spirit in the face of disappointment. Elsewhere on the album, he nods to the music’s church roots, singing of fear of the devil on “The Strangest Thing” and damnation on “Cut Ya Down” (the only non-original on the record and a song he learned performing with Boston’s Silver Leaf Gospel Singers, founded in 1945). “What Have We Done” is something of a secular hymn for the environment, and “I’d Rather Be Alone” serves as a meditation on following your own path to salvation. MOJO called the Boston-via-Mississippi singer the “king of rhythm & soul,” while Rolling Stone hailed his “classic soul and horn-heavy R&B soaked with the blues,” and NPR raved that “he conveys the heart-wrenching emotion of Southern predecessors such as Wilson Pickett and Otis Redding.” My Way Home represents a return to the sonic character that Reed’s career began with, but it does more than that: It captures the essence of his sound. A sound that, over everything else, prizes feeling, energy, and, yes, Soul.

OVERVIEW

'The Digging Remedy' is Plaid's eleventh studio album and yet encompasses their playful approach towards production more than ever. Joined by Benet Walsh on flute and bass for much of the album has added an extra dimension to Andy Turner and Ed Handley's sound. When it comes to the album's name, 'The Digging Remedy' hints at search and reward, the serendipity of finding something you weren't previously looking for - and signals that there is much more to be revealed leading up to the album's release on 10th June. Turner and Handley will continue their tradition of collaboration that has seen them work with a diverse range of musicians - from Björk, to the London Sinfonietta, to the Southbank Gamelan Players - as well as artists, and innovators in music technology.

AUDION ALPHA "Techno that tumbles towards ecstasy, courtesy of Matthew Dear." Pitchfork on Audion's 'Suckfish' 2005 Matthew Dear’s Audion project stands proudly at the intersection between art and hedonism, realised over a decade long dedication to powerful and relevant dance music. Growing out of the vibrant DIY Detroit underground, Audion and his contemporaries were free to feed off the energy reverberating from UK and European dancefloors, but singular in their desire to create their own sound and spirit. An Audion release is techno in it’s purest sense - whether it’s pushing the bombastic limits, spinning the dancefloor out of control or elegantly CD / LP TRACKLISTING 01 / A1 Dem 02 / A2 The Was A Button 03 / A3 Gut Man Commeth 04 / B1 Traanc 05 / B2 Celestial Antibody 06 / B3 Destroyer

toying with just a few sonic elements. ‘Alpha’ is Audion’s first artist album in 10 years and comes at the end of a period of fevered activity. The collective body of work standing as a marker in time and a defining moment in the life of the artist. Drowning out the noise of the outside world, ‘Alpha’ was a puzzle pieced together sonically in the shadows and wildly brought to life in a matter of weeks. The artwork for ‘Alpha’ has again been realised by Will Calcutt, Dear’s long time collaborator, who has a visual plan for the music that matches the sonic vision, completing the final critical piece of the puzzle. 07 / B4 08 / C1 09 / C2 10 / C3 11 / D1 12 / D2 13 / D3

Jenks Miller & Rose Cross NC BLUES FROM WHAT LP-TLR-116 // CD-TLR-116 Street Date: June 10, 2016

North Carolina-native Jenks Miller is a bit too otherworldly to ever be pegged as a regional musician. Still, he seems to have the South in his bones. Not the false sheen associated with the so-called “new South,” mind you—with its tech startups and gallery spaces colonizing the re-purposed red brick warehouses or the hip speakeasies and fussy artisanal coffeehouses. Not that place, which Miller might tell you, is being built on less than solid ground. The Carolina beneath it and beyond it. The primordial South. Still, Miller is hard to avoid in the cultural hotbed of the NC Triangle music scene. In addition to playing guitar in the beloved local rust rock unit, Mount Moriah, Miller has released a run of spidery electric guitar soli records under his own name. And for the last decade, he has helmed the experimental Horseback, whose humid, heavy drones conjure like nothing else the suffocating, insect hum of the warm southern night. In recent years, he’s been playing out with his purgatorial jam outfit, Rose Cross NC—an exercise, as their vaguely alchemical name indicates, in the swamp psychedelia of the Southern occult. (A handful of Rose Cross’s performances—improbably mapping the space between the two Deads: Grateful Dead and Dead C—are available at Jenks’s Bandcamp page.) Blues from WHAT is the first recording under the Rose Cross NC moniker to capture the searing sound of the touring band’s labyrinthine live performances. This is somewhat ironic, as Blues is essentially a solo album. Aside from Rose Cross keyboardist Elysse Miller’s welcome shadings on the Grendel Drone Commander throughout the affair, Blues from WHAT still mostly finds Jenks Miller conjuring alone. One wouldn’t necessarily know it, though. The proceedings are as densely tangled as anything in their live set. Blues from WHAT’s tremulous opening track, “Reaching Never Reaching” intertwines feedback and keening recorder and church organ in an ever-rising salutation. This bright ascent is cut short by the seamless transition into the astonishing “Yellowtail (Blues from WHAT)”: the drums storm in, and Miller lets loose with a snarling guitar line. The heavenly organ falls in line behind the riff while pentecostal tambourines rattle with the rite. Miller intones plagues and portents from afar: "Black blood! Boiling mud! Crawling lava!/ Now you see.” The music fractures. “And I feel the spirit come . . .” over and over, in some consummation of revival. The track that follows, “From Nothing to WHAT” is a lumbering electric processional, snaking its way deeper and deeper into the metaphysical backcountry. “I know this place./ I feel it./Past not even past”—a scrap of Faulkner in the lyrics, in case one has forgotten just where we are. On the far side of this ordeal lies the radiant raga-like introspection ‘Scrying in Water,’ which comprises the entire second half of Blues from WHAT. Scrying, of course, is the art of divination by crystal. And here Miller gazes into the “rings on rings” of the rippling water, while guitar, organ, and the breathing tambura proceed outward in an endless Terry Riley-esque burble. “Half light, patient waiting/ Half light meditation” sings Miller, on the cusp of some imminent illumination. We are not vouchsafed the content of his vision. If this feels like an initiation into some great mystery, perhaps it is. Rose Cross, after all, derives its name from a lineage of semi-mythical secret societies dating back to the Middle Ages. And, indeed, when prompted, Jenks Miller will happily unravel the various threads of esoterica woven into his music. But what makes Miller’s musical oeuvre so extraordinary is the way he manages to keep his revelations rooted in the physical and sonic landscape of the American South. There is a lived-in, historic quality to Blues from WHAT that is absent from so much of the headspace abstraction of contemporary experimental music. This music feels like it is from somewhere. At times, it feels like it has always been there, waiting for us.

ACID PARK May 27, 2016 "Acid Park is about the encouraging whisper of a mechanistic demon you hear upon waking, taunting you that the right balancing act between too much and too little will lead you to the perfect equilibrium. There's a promise of a sky that will tear the clouds apart and open with a vision for you. A shuttle forward to the next level where nothing can touch Mario, and he's just hanging with a squeaking mushroom. But by evening you remember that the universe is shapeless and infinite, that your brain can't even imagine what Nothing is.You think that you too are an agent of chaos, and all you are left with is throwing sticks on the ground and putting together temporary self-contained equilibriums of meaning. Then, sometimes, you're stuck at war with bullets flying around.Your friends are dying, and you can’t just drive down to their homes. You settle to the night. You know you like the triangle more than the square, it's better when the 3rd oscillator is modulating, and throwing sticks on. the ground is fun." - Ohal Acid Park is an eight movement suite for synthesizers, samplers, and voice. Born from balancing a love/hate relationship with song structure, baroque music, and soundart, Acid Park projects the most embarrassing aspects of each form as radical, chaotic elements organized by traditional constructs of composition. Her writing process was simple, yet meticulous. All of the tracks were built as collages by toying with sounds first, before cutting, pasting, and manipulating them in various ways. Ohal worked with each synth instrument as a closed system: she extracted sounds and repurposed them into complex textures and melodies. The percussion sounds on Acid Park were derived from this same process, but slowed down or sped up on tape and recorded back to the computer before landing in the mix. Ohal wrote Acid Park with a cyclical listening experience in mind. These eight songs grow and fold into each other, feeding on themselves like an ouroboros of lysergic emanations. Ohal’s sound design demands focus, but rewards ambient listening in the same way a walk at dawn memorializes a party’s afterglow. Acid Park was mixed by Ohal, Tunde Adebimpe and Matty Green at the California Federal Prism studio. Inva Cota designed the album cover in New York City, where Ohal is currently based. Acid Park will be available on Styles Upon Styles in limited and unlimited forms on May 13, 2016.

Erased Tapes are set to release ‘Spells’, the new album by their latest signing: Berlin-based composer, producer and sound designer Ben Lukas Boysen, on 10th June 2016. ‘Spells’ merges programmed piano pieces with live instruments, combining the controllable technical world and the often unpredictable aspects of live improvisation. In some ways it continues where his underground debut ‘Gravity’ left off, though a lot of weight is lifted, making room for a lighter and more energetic listen. Friend and fellow Erased Tapes artist Nils Frahm mixed and mastered both albums. Ben is not a master pianist like his dear friend, but his sound collages are so meticulously designed that after hearing the result an impressed Nils declared: “from now on, if anyone asks – this is a real piano”. His intricate, humanised programming – enhanced by drummer Achim Färber, cellist Anton Peisakhov and harpist Lara Somogyi, and a considerate selection of echoes, delays and compressors – has been used to create a hybrid sound that intends to deceive, question and challenge existing listening habits. Utilising the contrast between reduction and decoration, ‘Spells’ can be seen as a quest to find out how much or how little composition is required to constitute a song. Why the ear can and should be deceived about the authenticity of instruments. What significance these instruments have within this process, and why the personal perception of balance and sound exclude ultimate truths. Linking the two albums are the four movements of ‘Nocturne’, an everdeveloping conversation that on occasion flirts with the grandeur of compressed rock drums. The first single, ‘Golden Times 1’, received a world premiere by BBC 6 Music’s Mary Anne Hobbs, proclaiming it as "incredible." An alternative version of ‘Sleepers Beat Theme’ – composed for the soundtrack to a short film about the Trans-Siberian Express – opened Jon Hopkins’ Late Night Tales album from 2015, who noted “I thought it was such a calming and sensitive piece that sounded to me like the beginning of something...the warmth and depth of the sound entrances me every time”. Though ‘Spells’ and ‘Gravity’ are his first albums recorded under his own name, as acclaimed electronic producer HECQ he’s released nine albums since 2003, exploring everything from ambient to breakcore. He has simultaneously established himself as a trusted composer and sound designer, working for a wide array of clients including Amnesty International and Marvel Comics; composing for feature films, games, art installations and convention opening titles. After embracing this demanding line of work, in 2010 Ben felt the need to explore his roots and early education, which inspired these albums under his own name. Born in 1981 as the third child of opera singer Deirdre Boysen and actor Claus Boysen, his classical music training on piano and guitar began when he was seven years old; the works of Bruckner, Wagner and Bach laid an important foundation. Rediscovering this music shared with his parents – united with the sounds of Autechre, Cristian Vogel and Jiri.Ceiver to Pink Floyd and Godspeed You! Black Emperor – brought back an understanding of why he wanted to write music in the first place.

"Golden Times 1 is an exercise in patience. Its pieces ebb and flow between the fore and the edge in a single, assiduous undulation that explores the flux of both time and texture." — Earmilk "A slowly unfurling gift reminiscent of enjoying the pretty simplicity of watching a flower bloom in slow motion." — Stereogum

Official Websites: www.benlukasboysen.com www.erasedtapes.com PR Agent: julian@erasedtapes.com Booking Agent: booking@erasedtapes.com

In celebration of their latest signing, Erased Tapes are set to re-issue Ben Lukas Boysen’s compelling debut album ‘Gravity’, alongside new album ‘Spells’ on 10th June 2016. ‘Gravity’ was the first album Ben recorded under his own name, merging programmed piano pieces with live instruments, combining the controllable technical world and the often unpredictable aspects of live improvisation. From ‘Only In The Dark’ to the two movements of ‘Nocturne’, it’s a serious, solemn listen. And yet, with pieces like ‘To The Hills’ and ‘Eos’, ‘Gravity’ is an exploration of heights, cliffs and vertigoes. With piano lines and choir-like drones, this record suits its title in all its meanings, as the magnetic force takes us deeper towards the core. Marking a new beginning, this debut reveals a touching, and more melodic side to Ben’s body of work, which he previously only hinted at as HECQ. Friend and fellow Erased Tapes artist Nils Frahm mixed and mastered the album. Ben is not a master pianist like his dear friend, but his sound collages are so meticulously designed that after hearing the result an impressed Nils declared: “from now on, if anyone asks – this is a real piano”. His intricate, humanised programming – enhanced by drummer Achim Färber, additional synthesisers played by Nils, and a considerate selection of echoes, delays and compressors – has been used to create a hybrid sound that intends to deceive, question and challenge existing listening habits. Utilising the contrast between reduction and decoration, ‘Gravity’ as well as its successor ‘Spells’ can be seen as a quest to find out how much or how little composition is required to constitute a song. Why the ear can and should be deceived about the authenticity of instruments. What significance these instruments have within this process, and why the personal perception of balance and sound exclude ultimate truths. Linking the two albums are the four movements of ‘Nocturne’, an ever-developing conversation that on occasion flirts with the grandeur of compressed rock drums. As HECQ Ben has released nine albums since 2003, exploring everything from ambient to breakcore. Rediscovering this music shared with his parents – united with the sounds of Autechre, Cristian Vogel and Jiri.Ceiver to Pink Floyd and Godspeed You! Black Emperor – brought back an understanding of why he wanted to write music in the first place. “Gravity strips away the cloaked mysteries of electronic music production to expose the tender side of this musician’s mind.” — Headphone Commute

Cool In The Pool Oh lord, give us more money Persian Love Hollywood symphony Cool In The Pool (Instrumental)

Holger Czukay's first post-Can solo album finds the bass player exploring prog rock jams with varied instrumentation, song-oriented lyrics, and media samples from film, television, and short-wave. It was the samples that put Czukay in the same category as David Byrne and Brian Eno: an art rocker exploring the early days concurrently with early hip-hop pioneers (or alternately, a white man exploiting the culture of the third world, depending on who you read). On "Persian Love," Czukay backs up clips of an Iranian singer recorded off the short-wave with lilting guitar and keyboard riffs that sparkle like light. The album is all pleasant, playful textures, with little of the darkness that Can dallied with. www.groenland.com

FAKEAR “ANIMAL”

Street Date: 6/10/2016 COUNT084 | COUNTCD084 Fakear is Théo Le Vigoreux - an uncannily suitable name for a young producer whose energy is seemingly limitless. At 24 years old, Fakear has already taken his globally-tuned dance music across the world, playing shows from London to Tokyo, supporting Bonobo and selling out Paris’ prestigious Olympia in 2015. The journey that’s led to 2016 and his debut album, Animal, has been three years and 4 EPs long. One of them reached the top 10 in France, and his music has drawn the attention of M.I.A., AlunaGeorge, DJ Snake, Annie Mac, The FADER and ODESZA - one of many peers who’ve asked Fakear for remixes. Animal ranges from the flamenco refrain of “SheerKhan”, through the original composition with Andreya Triana on “Light Bullet”, to a stunning collaboration with Rae Morris, a new pop star in-the-making with whom Fakear maintains an elegant complicity. Throughout the album, Fakear ensured that his electronic methodology enhanced, rather than limited his raw instinct. He built sounds from memories and from talismanic items; The result is an album as suited to the dance floor as it to listening under the stars, or in the moonlight of the “Lune Rousse”. In the studio as on the boards, Fakear’s music is lively, incarnated and instinctive. Definitively Animal.

THE INVISIBLE “PATIENCE”

Street Date: 6/10/2016 ZEN229 | ZENCD229 From the opening bars of the wonderful “So Well”, (featuring their friend and collaborator Jessie Ware), the feeling of joy pervades the record. Although the group have worked on this record with Anna Calvi, Rosie Lowe, Connan Mockasin and Sam Shepherd (Floating Points) as well as Ware, the sense of collective excitement and pleasure in music-making is what holds sway. They’ve played with just about everyone from Adele to St Vincent, Grace Jones, Britten Sinfonia, Jack DeJohnette, Roots Manuva, Jamie Woon, Hot Chip, Zongamin, Gramme, Yoko Ono, Beck and many others.

TRACKLISTING 1. So Well 2. Save You 3. Best of Me 4. Life’s Dancers

Joyous without losing any of its intelligence or compositional rigor, the record takes its title from an unfashionable but profound idea — that, if we want to solve problems we have to be prepared to work and to wait rather than expecting instant results. The Invisible’s first album was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize, their second was described as “incredibly uplifting and moving” (Vice), but it’s Patience (as you’d expect, if you understand that good things come to those who wait) that stands—so far!—as the uplifting pinnacle of their remarkable career.

SPACE DIMENSION CONTROLLER “ORANGE MELAMINE” Street Date: 6/10/2016 ZEN231 | ZENCD231

In early 2008, age 18, Space Dimension Controller (R&S, Clone Royal Oak) made his first album in his bedroom in Belfast, now set for a release this June. Crunchy, tattered and enjoyably odd - “Orange Melamine” is a lovingly produced and deeply personal album that laces supernatural sounds and translucent synths with a sense of overflowing harmony. Washed in reverb and draped in hiss, the album draws influence from the old VHS tapes handed down from his older brother and cousins, as well as artists like Boards of Canada, Brian Eno and William Basinski.

TRACKLISTING

The recording process involved Space Dimension Controller (real name Jack Hamill) using a batch of unopened pyral cassette tapes from the 70’s, some of which were so old they had degraded. On “Orange Melamine” Hamill skillfully displays his early ability to make electronic tracks there are intricate and futuristic but also imbued with personality. Original without being difficult, enjoyable while being distinctive; that ‘Orange Melamine’ triumphs without compromise is testament to a distinctively creative artist.

Past / Present / Up In Her Eyes / Respect / Night Space (1999) / Suncatcher / Islands / Tides / Falls / Whole Day Song / The Sea / Forever Chemicals / Dark Wind / Wintersong / Rivers / Dust / Rise / Star City Continuing on the Flying Saucer Attack reinstatement program that began with last year’s new release Instrumentals 2015 and the reissue earlier this year of FSA’s 1995 LPs Further and Chorus, we arrive at the 1997’s New Lands and 2000’s Mirror. Following the chilled-out acoustic draughts blowing through both Further and Chorus, to say nothing of the folk-undertones in the 1996 EP release “Sally Free and Easy,” it seemed that the direction for future FSA musics was clear: increased melodicism with more roots exposed in ever-cleaner productions, right? Uh, no. After what felt to be an extended wait, New Lands arrived in late ‘97, marking phase two of Flying Saucer Attack as an ostensible solo act for Dave Pearce. Further, New Lands presented a foreboding atmosphere, with coarse electric textures from the very top of the record, as well as an unanticipated rubbery bottom and the implied physicality of such on several songs. These developments hardly implied a newfound peace of mind, as had been suggested by Further; instead, an encroaching darkness spreads out over side two of New Lands. Both “The Sea” and “Forever” conclude the album with a feeling of anything but accord; glacial floats that might seem placid in other contexts are enervated with jagged rhythms and teeming guitar textures, all of which seem to affirm our uneasy desire to cleave the skin from our bodies as being a perfectly acceptable plan. The highly palpable psychedel-

ic shadows of the debut Flying Saucer Attack album flicker throughout New Lands, albeit in a much altered form. The distance between albums only increased between New Lands and Mirror — over two years this time, with only a cover version of Skip Spence’s “goodbye world” opus, “Grey/Afro” coming between. Mirror arrived wrapped in a vibrant, multicolored cover designed by Savage Pencil — but the opening sequence of songs offered some of the quietest, most refined Flying Saucer Attack songs committed to tape. The violent spells of New Lands had given way to a flattened drone on the electric pieces “Space 1999,” and “Islands” and “Dark Wind,” while the glittering acoustics of “Suncatcher” and “Tides” highlighted an incredible fragility within the songs. Dave Pearce seemed to be further away in space than ever, a wispy presence over streamlined hard beats and loops of “Chemicals,” and Mirror’s second side. Particularly when considering the silence that followed, this impression makes Mirror a distressing encounter at times, though certainly one of the most enervating listens of the FSA catalog — quite an achievement, when the blinding sheets of previous phases are recalled! Mirror and the eventual Instrumentals 2015 show that following their manic first years, Flying Saucer Attack never stopped evolving. And now the vinyl artifacts are back among us — to be dug again....

The mastermind of Luke Vibert, the Cornish acid pioneer and grand exponent of mischievous electronic sounds under a variety of guises (including Plug, Wagon Christ and Amen Andrews), the Kerrier District debut has long been of print and circulation. Following 2015’s successful re-entry on Hypercolour, with the critically acclaimed album ‘4’, the label will re-master and reissue this landmark release. Faithfully re-creating the original 3LP vinyl set, and re-issuing on CD & digital alongside a bonus disc/tracks that feature the second Kerrier District EP (‘2’, originally released in 2006). With a big Kerrier revival in full swing (check the latest remix single on Hypercolour where Ricardo Villalobos & Max Loderbauer, KiNK and Head High all pay homage to the man), then there’s been no better time for the re-issue treatment on one of dance music’s classic albums.

About DJ Format's Psych Out is a compilation of records from around the world that Format WISHES he could play at clubs every weekend. Some of the tracks are hard to categorise...kind of psychedelic, kind of funky, kind of crazy...but most have unmistakable blend of distorted electric guitars, driving basslines and pounding drums. Maybe you didn't think it was possible for “Foxy Lady” to be played any harder...but 49th Blue Streak did it. “Hava Nagila” never really seemed likely to lend itself to a psychedelic reworking...but The Quests from Singapore thought differently. In Germany, The CT Four Plus did away with boring tradition and instead praised God with their electric guitars. Advertising executives in France thought it best to spread the word of their new chocolate bar by commissioning the Bana Pop Band to make a cool 7" flexi disc record. These are just a few examples of how the boundaries of music were being pushed in the late '60s & early '70s when most of these exciting recordings were made. In DJ Format's own words: The idea for this compilation came about because of my search for a rare psych/funk 7" that isn't even included here! My friend DJ Oneofakind played me the said record and I totally lost my mind. Some months later after a lot of asking around and searching online, a copy turned up on Discogs.com for a painful amount of money. I contacted the seller to ask a couple of questions and it turned out I was talking to Jake Holloway, BBE's in-house designer. I'd loosely known Jake for a few years through mutual friends so we quickly arranged a time to meet and take care of business. Jake told me he'd offered the 7" to a few other DJ/collector friends but they'd passed on it as it was 'too heavy' for them. This got us talking about my love for psych records with a funky slant and I explained my frustration at buying so many records that fit that description, that were 'too heavy' to play at my typical DJ gigs. Jake had the perfect solution: "why don't you do a compilation of funky, fuzzed-out psych stuff for BBE?''.

INFORMATION:

Asher Levitas is perhaps best known as part of Old Apparatus, the acclaimed and enigmatic London experimental outfit. Over the last few years he has featured on releases for labels including Deep Medi, Houndstooth and Left Blank as ‘Saa’ with the singer Linn Carin Dirdal. ‘Lit Harness’, his first solo album, started forming as a project in 2015 alongside the artist and writer Michael Crowe who worked on the live A/V show while Asher created the music with vocalist Marina Elderton (from the Ethereal Psych band Kull) who features on the tracks.

TRACKLIST:

A: 1 Withdrawn 2 In The Eyes 3 Sheathe 4 Waiting By An Open Door B: 5 Strongest Bonds 6 Blessed Mother 7 Premature Exit 8 Anticipating Violence

The record follows personal themes in a time of extreme emotion: anxiety and madness but also serenity and acceptance, hence the term ‘Lit Harness’, which is a Harness that holds you in a calm place while chaos happens all around. Asher also wanted to describe the experience of the sleep paralysis, which he has had most of his life, into a musical sound world. That’s not to say the album is totally dark, but there’s intensity and transcendence here as well as an otherworldly beauty. The music on ‘Lit Harness’ plays out in a shadowy hallucinogenic dream-like state where it’s not clear what’s meant to reflect reality or pure fantasy. Part of this process was the way the audio and visuals developed in tandem with each other, Michael passing Asher images and video, which Asher used to inject drama into the tracks and finish them. ‘Lit Harness’ could be described as ambient, but every track is filled with detail and a strange clanking drama, the hammering noises of ‘Withdrawn’ and the cold fever of ‘In The Eyes’ playing out like a dream. ‘Sheathe’ turns the record around with clouds of swirling choirs and ‘Waiting By An Open Door’ plays a hazy piano, with wind rushing through the soundfield. ‘Strongest Bonds’ has held descending chords with watery drum hits; ethereal vocals building in the background into a haze of noise. ‘Blessed Mother’s’ repeating vocals and rising chords ripple with a transcendent, gentle hopefulness, which gives way to the flatline drone and otherworldly voices of ‘Premature Exit’. ‘Anticipating Violence’ finishes the album with a sad, angry surrender, punctuated with rushes of cold hammering and reversed breaking glass.

Smalltown Supersound is proud to announce the new album from Dan Lissvik (formerly of Studio), the album is a brand new collection of instrumentals made throughout 2015, the year Lissvik became a father for the first time. The title refers to the time he would start his recording sessions after his wife and newborn baby went to bed. Midnight is filled with the Dan Lissvik signature sounds; gentle guitars, laidback bass, dubby disco, lush balearics and sun-drenced psychedelics.

Midnight Tracklisting: A1 – M A2 – I A3 – D A4 – N B1 – I B2 – G B3 – H B4 – T

The album was recorded at home with a stripped back setup of an analog graphic equalizer he found at a flea market, a bass guitar and a mic. He worked at night with a thermos of coffee, while his young family slept in the room furthest away from his studio. His process was to press record and let the midnight jams unfurl, resulting in a sound and mood that has shifted since his previous release, Meditation, under the moniker Atelje in January 2015. Ten years ago, Dan Lissvik was instrumental in kicking off the midnoughties Balearic revival alongside his partner in the group Studio, Rasmus Hägg. Both came from the frozen coast of Sweden (rather than Ibiza) and their debut West Coast was hailed as one of 2006’s best releases, making Rough Trade’s top 10 albums of the year. Their sound was a blissful, effortless, laidback afrobeat-kraut-disco-pop and won a legion of fans. Though West Coast made Studio internationally acclaimed (they even remixed Kylie Minogue’s “2 Hearts”) that was the only record they ever made. Lissvik showed little interest in pursing an international DJ career or touring as a “band,” preferring to stay in Gothenburg and record. Then, in 2012, six years after West Coast was released, Studio officially broke up with a quick note. For Studio-addicts, Lissvik hinted at a tantalizing stockpile of new material – at one point posting 50 tracks on Soundcloud before taking them down. Then in 2014, he started to release new material, beginning with the limited-edition 300release run of the Atelje LP Meditations, with the Dan Lissvik “Airwalk/Shuvit” 12” to follow via Smalltown Supersound. Now, ten years following the release of West Coast, as the influence of Studio’s work reverberates up through a new generation of producers (Jamie xx sampled a beach-blissed loop from it for “Girl”), Lissvik’s Midnight is set for release.

SAMARA LUBELSKI The Gilded Raid LP-DR-00016

Street Date: June 10, 2016 Format: LP (with download) List Price: $19.99

Samara Lubelski… Songwriter, Singer, Multi-Instrumentalist, Improviser, and Engineer… With a voluminous musical pedigree, the list of artists (individually and collectively) that Lubelski has played, performed or recorded with, reads out like a best-of the who’s who of the art, noise, free, improv, experimental, or whatever we’re calling it these days scene(s). Hall of Fame, The Tower Recordings, MV and EE, and Thurston Moore are just the beginning of what can be mentioned here. Her first solo outing, 1997’s In the Valley, was a major installment in the recorded legacy of experimental string music, a dense exploration of drones and resonance. This was followed in 2004 with a full-band recording of lush psychedelic folk-rock for The Fleeting Skies. Since then, Lubelski has released a wonderfully colorful series of albums: Spectacular Of Passages (2005), Parallel Suns (2007), Future Slip (2009) and Wavelength (2012). Her most recent solo violin record, String Cycle, was released in 2014, and Augenmusik, a Metabolismus improvised collaboration, issued a cassette in 2015. Released in 2016 by Drawing Room Records, The Gilded Age represents Lubelski’s most current offering. The Gilded Raid…” Yes, Samara Lubelski knows how to make highly refined “pop” records, and her newest album, The Gilded Raid, is the best example yet of her baroque genius. Of course and completely understood, this statement may come as a surprise for those most familiar with Lubelski’s more “outer” sounds, but alas, it’s a wonderful thing indeed. With all of Lubelski’s lovely pastoral and ethereal understandings fully in place on The Gilded Raid, the album is a most splendid beauty that celebrates the forthcoming other-worldly new age. In other words, it’s nighttime music for the new time. For The Gilded Raid, Lubelski worked with her long-time collaborators, Metabolismus, and recorded it at their studio, Sumsilobatem, located in the village of Degenfeld near Stuttgart Germany. With her well-seasoned team in place, it was inevitable that only a tuneful garden of magical blessedness would be created. Closer to being psychic than psychedelic, The Gilded Age is more than just harmonious with the current world and the next. It’s the full-fledged portal we’ve been hoping for.

The Gilded Raid – Rolling Out, Rolling Right | Driver, In Your Car | Soon Moon | The Gilded Raid | Shifting At The Stations | Any Day Now | Get With The Time | Palace On The Hill | What’s Up, Rider | Further Zones | The Spectacle of Exile | They Say You’re In The Now | Turning Of The Season | Flicker, Flicker | To The Wall

SALES POINTS -First vinyl issue release of album recorded in 2015 in Germany with long-time collaborators, Metabolismus. -An essential piece of pop from Samara Lubelski’s all too important discography that heavily spotlights one of her finest of recorded hours. -Each LP is pressed on 180-gram vinyl housed in a full-color gloss jacket (with download) and includes a foldout poster insert. "Samara Lubelski is a cultural zelig… As adept as she is at the dark arts of drone music, crud rock, and alt folk, Lubelski also does a fine line in sleek pop music.” – Alex Neilson, The Wire Samara Lubelski’s “Folk-pop is so endearing that all but the hardest of cynics may find themselves won over.” – Simon Hampson, The Wire Samara’s magic “…is the musical equivalent of a hypnotist's swinging timepiece, blissfully entrancing in its steady beauty." - Marc Masters, Pitchfork on Samara Lubelski’s Parallel Suns LP.

Jackie Lynn is the new album from Haley Fohr, the compelling front woman of Circuit des Yeux. Recorded and featuring performances by Cooper Crain of Cave and Bitchin’ Bajas, the album also featured Crain’s Bitchin’ Bajas bandmates Rob Frye and Dan Quinlivan. For this album, Fohr created the persona of Jackie Lynn, developed her back story and then wrote the album as her. These songs of a country girl gone drug dealer have a fast and loose air. The combination of the Lynn persona and Crain’s affection for synthesized sounds of all sorts makes for an entirely singular pop album. Ever center stage is the utterly powerful voice of Fohr. Haley, solo and with Circuit Des Yeux, has toured and collaborated with an astounding variety of musicians in her nascent career: from Bill Orcutt to Liturgy and Julia Holter. 2015’s Circuit des Yeux release In Plain Speech was lauded by press and radio worldwide; including NPR’s First Listen, Pitchfork, Magnet, Stereogum, Tiny Mix Tapes, AllMusic, BOMB, Ad Hoc, Exclaim, Relix, Impose, Jezebel, Paper Magazine, and more. Upcoming collaborations include being a part of Glenn Branca’s ensemble for the RBMA Festival in May. 2016 sees the story continue within Jackie Lynn; Fohr’s impassioned baritone and striking melodies makes this collection of songs compulsive listening. Jackie Lynn:: The Chicago Chronicle Jackie Lynn was born in Franklin, TN on June 1st, 1990. “I’ve always been the source of action. My mom didn’t even make it to the hospital before I decided to come into this world. She had to lie right down on the sidewalk in front of Rolling Hills Hospital as doctors hovered around to help. It was storming that morning, and right as I was coming into the world a bolt of lighting fell from the sky, striking my mother right in the belly. They say I shot out of her like a bullet from a gun, right into oncoming traffic.” Jackie, now a 25-year-old Gemini residing somewhere unknown, has mysteriously disappeared after leaving a chronological musical artifact that the city of Chicago is now using to try to trace her whereabouts. This is what we know: Born and raised in Franklin, TN, in May of 2010, Jackie took a Greyhound bus from Franklin, TN to Chicago, IL. Upon her arrival in the city of Chicago, Jackie found a cheap sublet on the south side of Chicago. She soon became acquainted with Tom Strong (real name unknown) on a short CTA bus trip to the Chicago Loop. We believe that Tom & Jackie together ran a multi-million dollar business distributing the illegal substance of cocaine around Chicago & the Chicago tri-state area for over 4 years. Authorities believe that a local automobile shop was used as the main distributions headquarter. Over the years, Tom & Jackie have become well known for their large and lavish parties thrown at an apartment located on Sacramento & 26th street. Police have been hot on their trail, but have found no probable cause to make an arrest. A domestic dispute was reported on February 18th of 2015. When police arrived, the apartment was found deserted. Traces of cocaine were found on a red and gold LP jacket with the following recording enclosed.

GENRE : METAL/ROCK FILE UNDER: “S” SUMAC “I” Isis, “O” Old Man Gloom “B” Baptists, “R” Russian Circles RELEASE DATE : June 10, 2016 SUMAC is the trio of Aaron Turner (Isis, Old Man Gloom, Mamiffer) on guitar & vocals, Nick Yacyshyn (Baptists) on drums, and Brian Cook (Russian Circles, These Arms Are Snakes, Botch) on bass whose ability to deliver punishing music is matched only by the weight of their pedigree. Turner is the founder of the influential Hydra Head Records as well as the boundry pushing SIGE label and since his days in Isis has consistenetly challenged himself to push the boundries of heavy music. Cook’s ability to delivery complex bass lines are matched by his bone shaking heavy tones. Yachyshyn’s drumming abilities are much lauded, especially by Dave Grohl who often calls him out as his favorite drummer currently playing. Together on their new epic double album What One Becomes the trio walk the line between chaos and control. This sophomore album sees the band take a leap forward from their debut The Deal (2015) revealing a new side of Turner’s combustible songwriting and guitar playing. Fans of the legendary Isis and cult heros Old Man Gloom will not be disappointed. There is a profound anxiety that leaches through What One Becomes. SUMAC’s choreographed structures parallel the internal and personal struggles with anxiety. They seek to identify the source, devise a course of action, and confront that condition at hand. SUMAC channels psychic distress into their rigorously algebraic maneuvers and syllable-crack dissonance. The band will be touring throughout 2016 and into 2017 across Europe and North America including stops at Roskilde Festival and Southwest Terror Fest.

GENRE : POP/INDIE FILE UNDER: “T” Throws, Tunng RELEASE DATE : June 10, 2016 NO EXPORT

TRACK LISTING: Throws, a new pop duo, has crafted an incredibly catchy, brilliantly varied debut album. Throws is Mike Lindsay and Sam Genders, whose previous band Tunng was beloved in Britain. While Throws hints at the pair’s affection for the British 60s folk and experimental explosion, the playful attitude here is entirely their own. The album’s rendering in Reykjavik, where Lindsay lived for four years, was done with instruments and techniques more commonly associated with contemporary electronic music. Icelandic musicians, including múm’s Sigurlaug Gísladóttir, the country’s beautiful landscape, and perhaps even a few of its folk tales all played a part in the recording. Those influences, combined with the powerful vocal harmonies and melodic sense of Genders and Lindsay, resulted in a debut that is wildly playful and beautifully executed. It is a musical adventure that continues to reveal itself with each listen, and contains more than a few catchy songs you simply can’t get out of your head. The album was recorded in Reykjavik in Lindsay’s studio, a room full of synths and guitars, with big windows that overlooked the sea. Iceland was an escape for the band, and its influence is everywhere. Genders’ soulful falsetto and Lindsay’s vocals play off one another beautifully amid glitchy electronics, piano and strings provided by Amiina (frequent collaborators with Sigur Rós). Throws is the sound of old friends and collaborators, and there is an undeniable ease that can only come having played together for a substantial amount of time. This renewed partnership has all the energy of friends catching up and all the excitement of getting to know each other again. The freedom to experiment with textures and process expanded the band’s ideas, and that freedom is palpable in the fully-formed tracks. Throws’ debut is a delicious sonic adventure full of unexpected elements, of dirt and noise (with vocals run through a tape echo machine). The duo’s boundless explorative nature results in a lush recording that tickles the intellect and takes you out of your head all as it makes your toes tap. “Simply staring at Tristan Perich’s 1-Bit Symphony is satisfying enough. And the sound is as interesting as its sleeve: Perich... pushes the sound of the case’s one bit to its stylistic limit.” - PITCHFORK

Introducing Physical Editions Focusing on music that treads the fine line between electronic and classical, Physical Editions releases the works of Tristan Perich and Lesley Flanigan, two artists who explore the physical side of electronic sound. Tristan Perich’s album 1-Bit Symphony, released as an actual electronic circuit that plays its music when switched on, includes its source code printed in the liner notes (and its execution is the content of his 695-page art book 0.01s). His Compositions, a series of four recordings of his scored works for acoustic instruments paired with 1-bit electronics, also include posters of the complete, miniaturized scores. Lesley Flanigan’s releases capture her work with speaker feedback and voice, inspired by the tangible elements of electronic sound. Her background in sculpture is evident in the palpable sound palette of her handmade instruments.

The Philistines The Backbone of Night Street Date: 06/10/16 1LP ‐ TRM066 ‐ 19.99

Label: The Record Machine File Under: Indie Rock Export: No Export Box Lot: 10 LP

Track Listing 1. Steep 2. 1971 TRACK LISTING 3. Radiation Drive 4. A Twitch of the Death Nerve 5. The Accretion Disco 6. Arecibo 7. A Heart Like Candy 8. Stygia 9. Get Inside

With a barrage of spaced‐out, razor‐sharp guitars, a grooving rhythmic onslaught, and melodic keyboard tapestries, The Philistines take vintage ideas and form them into modern psychedelic sonic movements. There are many themes at play on The Backbone of Night, but they can all be tied up neatly under the notion of cosmic existentialism. The album explores the nature of existence. The fabric of reality. The absurdity of consciousness. The wonder of science. The nobility of exploration. It finds inspiration in the mysteries of the cosmos. Above all else, it aims to be transcendent. The six‐piece group has made a name for itself with forceful, engaging live shows that match its provocative, bombastic rock sound. Since The Philistines' inception in late 2013, they have become one of Kansas City’s most recognized bands, supporting prominent touring acts, playing prestigious music festivals (including Middle of the Map Fest, Crossroads Music Fest, and Alejandro Escovedo’s SXSW Day Party), and receiving a healthy amount of accolades in the local media, all before releasing their first album. In 2015, the band began touring throughout the Midwest and working on its debut LP with engineer/producer Paul Malinowski (of Shiner) at Massive Sound Studios. “The Philistines’ music is something you’d hear in a Tarantino movie when our hero comes on screen to whoop some ass.” – I Heart Local Music

 LP will be pressed on vibrant white vinyl with download code  Playing Middle of The Map Fest 2016, and national tour dates are being booked in support of the album  PR press campaign is currently running and the lead single “A Twitch of the Death Nerve” is featured on New Noise Magazine and Northern Transmissions  “The Philistines’ sound is both familiar and elusive, vintage but eclectic.” – The Kansas City Star The Record Machine 7103 Tracy Ave, Kansas City, MO 64131 USA Contact: alex@therecordmachine.net

PILLO W TALK LOVE ADDICTED

2014 saw the debut LP “Je Ne Sais Quoi” (Wolf + Lamb Records) from California home grown trio PillowTalk aka Michael Tello, Ryan Williams and singer Sammy D. Now in 2016 after a practically non stop touring schedule that has taken them around the world and back, the boys of summer return with their long awaited and dance floor tested Love Addicted EP. A double case of signature vocal house trouble this release wastes no time getting into the groove. First up, Love Addicted throws the party into full swing with a mix of powerful house drums, funky bass and an acid line that surely gets Crankenstein's approval (for those who know). On the B-side, but certainly not a sleeper, is Booty Rang. Think strong yet smooth drum programming, FM sounding melodies, Garage-y baseline and lyrics all about yo bootay! Here’s more words from lead singer Sammy D: "Releasing music to the world has always been a joy for us. It comes few and far between based on our touring schedule, so when we get to sit down in a studio together, it always brings out the best in us. Here are two straight up dance floor jams. We had a hard time picking the lead track here as both are designed for peak time dance floor shenanigans. We have been performing these in our live set this past year and have seen first hand the magic of these tunes.” The "Love Addicted" EP will be available in stores May 27th 2016 courtesy of Crew Love Records.

Young People Cassette / Digital Download “Young People's debut album wallows in backwoods ambience, a fetishization of rural life with a kernel of the blues somewhere at its heart. But the music they cut from this atmosphere is intriguing, and inventively realized.” - Pitchfork

Originally released in 2002 on KRS subsidiary 5 Rue Christine, Young People’s self-titled album is now available on cassette. Catalog: GER 021 Release Date: 06.10.2016 Cassette List Price: $6.99 Genre: Rock / Alternative Available Worldwide

“The greatest moments in mysteries are the seconds just before all the disparate plot strands are pulled taut. There exists in those seconds the vague taste of meaning, but it's still clouded. There is the nervous butterfly buildup to the revelation, and it's the implication that often trumps the solution itself. Young People exist in those seconds before epiphany.” - Philadelphia Weekly “Singer Katie Eastburn's hauntingly beautiful and country-tinged vocals lent an exciting uniqueness to offbeat, eccentric folk-rock tunes. It was one of the most exciting debut albums of 2002, as well as one of the best all around recordings” Dusted Young People's short, minimal, brutally beautiful songs draw their inspiration from ancient hymnals and confessionals and blues numbers, taken with a strong dose of Broadway. The L.A. trio played stark and aloof and downright frightening music: by equal measure inspiring, comforting, chilling.

Emily Rodgers - Two Years Street Date: June 10th, 2016

Track Listing 1. No Last Call 2. Anyone 3. Hurt 4. Two Years 5. Right Lie 6. Waiting for You 7. Burn Out 8. In the City 9. Walk Don’t Run 10. I Believe In You (Neil Young Cover)

About: On paper, Rodgers’ music might seem like it would add up to folk or alt-country: A band with guitars, a pedal steel, some fiddles here and there. But on listening, you’re as likely to pick up on an undercurrent of shoegaze, chamber pop, even post-rock on Two Years. The violins oscillate under Rodgers’ melodies, more Dirty Three than country. The pedal steel soars. Rodgers’ voice, beautiful and world-weary, echoes. On Two Years, her first album since 2009’s Bright Day, Rodgers worked with legendary producer Kramer, who was responsible for the sounds of first-generation shoegaze and slow-core innovators like Galaxie 500 and Low. (Kramer mixed and mastered Bright Day, and returned as producer this time around; he also produced two videos from the new album.) It’s fair to look at the album as a product of Rodgers’ unconventional writing -- she’s an English professor, and looks to literary sources for inspiration -- and Kramer’s sonic genius. Low comes to mind as a reference point; so does Tara Jane O’Neil. That Two Years is her first recording in nearly seven betrays the fact that Rodgers isn’t rushing things. Song by song, she avoids the temptation to try to cram too many words into a phrase; there’s a deliberate confidence in her delivery. Rodgers takes her words seriously, and wants you to, too. (And not just her own words -- the album closes with a haunting, otherworldly cover of Neil Young’s “I Believe In You” that turns the original on its head.)

BERLIN 30IES : BERLIN NOW

TRACKLISTING

A Golden Age of Jewish music almost forgotten - the songs captured in 1930s‘ Berlin by Hirsch Lewin on his Semer label. The Semer Ensemble brings this astonishing music back to life with critically acclaimed concerts and their first album, recorded live at the Maxim Gorki Theater, Berlin, in November 2015. 1920s Berlin, a Golden Age of Jewish music and musicians. In this milieu we find Hirsch Lewin, formerly a forced laborer conscripted to Germany from his native Vilnius during World War I. After the war, Lewin decides to remain in Berlin, finds work in a bookstore, and eventually starts his own business: the Hebräische Buchhandlung (Hebrew Bookstore), Grenadierstrasse 28. The year is 1930. In the midst of Berlin‘s immigrant center, the Scheunenviertel, Lewin sells books in Hebrew; history books, children‘s books and more; prayer shawls, candles and other religious items. His speciality: gramophone records! In 1932, Lewin creates his own label, „Semer“. One year later, the Nazis come to power, forbidding Jewish musicians to perform in non-Jewish settings. Semer becomes a Noah‘s Ark for Jewish musicians who have nowhere else to go. For five years, Lewin makes recordings at a feverish pace, creating a precious time capsule of a world facing annihilation. On November 9, 1938, SA hordes attack the Hebräische Buchhandlung, demolishing stock and store, including 4,500 recordings and 250 metal plates. The memory of the Semer label falls into oblivion for the next 60 years. Fast forward. From 1992-2001, musicologist Dr. Rainer E. Lotz travels the world to track down the Semer recordings. Miraculously, he is able to recover and restore almost the entire catalogue. In 2012, the Berlin Jewish Museum Berlin commissions New Jewish Music luminary Alan Bern to create new interpretations of the archival recordings. Bern puts together a world-class ensemble of musicians from all ends of his musical world America and Berlin, the old generation and the new. Bern: „It‘s amazing, but 80 years after the destruction of this culture there is once again a critical mass of musicians in Berlin able to take on a project like this.“ Drawing amply from this new wealth of Berlin talent and backed up by jazz master Martin Lillich on bass, the ensemble brings together two of

the most prolific pioneers of Jewish music - Lorin Sklamberg and Paul Brody - with four leaders of the new generation of powerful performers - Daniel Kahn, Sasha Lurje, Mark Kovnatskiy and Fabian Schnedler. For three years, Semer Ensemble expands and develops the Semer repertoire on successful tours throughout Europe. In November 2015, the ensemble records „Rescued Treasure“ over three nights live in concert at the Gorki Theater Studio in Berlin. The result captures the special energy of a live performance on a lovingly made, studio-quality recording. The Semer Ensemble‘s depth and virtuosity can and does match the entire breadth of Hirsch Lewin‘s original Semer label recordings. Its fresh interpretations and provocative, contemporary arrangements open a time tunnel between 1930s Berlin and today‘s New Jewish Music: Berlin cabaret, Russian folk songs, Yiddish theater hits, operatic arias and cantorial music are just a small sample of this remarkable repertoire. With all-out energy and all-in commitment, the Semer Ensemble brings an almost forgotten world back to life, not in only critically acclaimed concerts but on record as well: The Semer Ensemble‘s debut album, recorded at the Maxim Gorki Theater in a series of intimate exclusive concerts in November 2015, will be ready for release in spring 2016.

Weird Dreams is the nom-de-plume of Doran Edwards, a London -based artist returning nearly four years after the release of his band's debut album, Choreography. This new record is a collection of ten songs made over a 3 year period of uncertain times in various homes, and was written, produced, performed and mixed by Edwards. Luxury Alone documents a very difficult period of emotional turmoil and various health issues for Edwards, and the result is an extremely moving and beautiful personal journey. “All this music is how I felt in the world. I eventually choose to learn to mix the record myself, design my own fantasy image and then have that world disappear. “ Luxury Alone is hundreds of songs down to just ten. 1. Binary, 2. Vinyl LP / Gatefold CD London five-piece Evans the Death return with Vanilla, their most ambitious and experimental album to date, eschewing the more traditional pop structures and hooks of their first two albums. Vanilla sees the band veer in an ever more adventurous direction: more aggressive, extroverted and raw. The new album was recorded with producer Rory Attwell, who worked on both of their previous records. Highly variegated in style and mood, brimming with extreme contrasts, from noisy to funky to melodic, energetic to dejected, full of chaos and restlessness. There’s the psychedelic snarl of “Haunted Wheelchair” built around dissonant, ominous, jazz-like chords, which build a sense of dread and paranoia. There’s also the no-wave party vibe of “Suitcase Jimmy”. “Hey! Buddy” is an “unintentionally mean-spirited” askew pop tune. While the wartime dancehall of “Cable St. Blues” is an odd duet between two parts of the psyche, representing “an argument you have with yourself, about depression and extreme self-criticism and self-doubt “. “Hot Sauce” is led by a groovy, capacious bassline, while “Armchair Theatre”, the quietest, prettiest song on the record, starts out like a soft rock classic and turns in to a gorgeously mournful song. “Welcome to Usk” drews on Ennio Morricone’s spaghetti western soundtracks and parts of Vivian Kubrick’s score for Full Metal Jacket, with a banging disco section thrown in for good measure. 1.
