OOIOO - Gamel

CD on 20% DEAL UNTIL DEC 1st Gamel was released in July of this year right as OOIOO made the trek from Japan to tour North America for the first time in over seven years. The album has been praised by NPR, Pitchfork, The New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, Magnet, SPIN, Tiny Mix Tapes, CMJ, PopMatters, AllMusic, and more.

OOIOO is a Japanese group led by Yoshimi of the Bordeoms. Gamel is inspired by the Javanese style of gamelan music and shows OOIOO expanded to a six piece with the addition of two gamelan players.

What is it about Christmas music and the undeniable gravitational pull it exerts on some songwriters?

I for one have never been able to resist the urge to scribble a song that might outlive me with hopes of slipping it in among those overplayed and oh-so-tired holiday classics— syrupy and jingly as they may be, sleigh bells ringing into oblivion.

The music that surrounds the end of every year is deeply associated with my earliest, most primal musical memories. A time of year with its own music. And every songwriter must admit it: overplayed or not, some of those tunes are magnificent and timeless as falling midnight snow.

Blood Oranges In The Snow is the third Christmas record Karin and I have made, and I confess, I think I’m mostly just trying to get back to that early time in my life when the music was all brand new, something to be discovered.

But then again, so many Christmas songs have already been written: I think we are genuinely curious about the ones that haven’t.

Once upon a time we sent our first Christmas record to Byron House, an upright bass player who would join us for several of our December tours. Byron put it on the stereo during his family’s evening meal, and after several tracks his wife asked, “Do they like Christmas?”

The music practically begs to be mused upon over one hot drink or another.”

When Karin and I make the annual holiday pilgrimage home to visit family, and pull into the drive, and turn off the car, one of us inevitably looks over at the other and says, “Tie a rope around my waist, I’m goin’ in.” We all have our foibles and somewhat compromised histories. And in spite of all the lights and festivities, our private struggles are often brought into more stark relief during the “holiday season.”

Maybe if we just tell the truth, it will give others freedom to do so.

Coming full circle, ‘Hyperdub 10.4’, the final episode in the series of four compilations celebrating the 10th anniversary of Hyperdub, returns to the club, this time focused on house, garage and techno. As with ‘10.1’, ‘10.4’ is a double CD, featuring one disc of new and recent material, and a second of bangers from the Hyperdub canon in recent years.

Disc 1 kicks off with a long awaited, previously unreleased track by Burial, with an unusually triumphant and - compared to recent extended montages - relatively direct 2step feel. This is followed by another classic from the vaults, Cooly G’s skeletal house cut ‘Him Da Biz’. We turn the energy levels up with Ossie + PHRH’s bouncy ‘Ugly Observation’, and Funkystepz’s ‘Vice Versa’, a track in demand since Kode9’s ‘Rinse 22’ mix compilation from 2013. From here, we move into three distinct takes on techno: Walton’s face melting ‘Laser War’, the low slung tech-garage of Kode9’s ‘Oh’, and a VIP mix of Ikonika’s recent dance floor bulldozer ‘Position’.

Another exclusive VIP mix is included, this time of Funkystepz’s banger ‘Fuller’, and Dorian Concept turns in a quirky remix of Martyn’s classic ‘Mega Drive Generation’ which originally appeared on Hyperdub’s fifth anniversary compilation in 2009.

Next we are graced with the epic dubbed-out acid house of ‘The Phoenix’, the title track from the recent album by King Britt under the guise of Fhloston Paradigm, then into the fathoms-deep bubbling bass and synth washes of DVA’s extremely psychedelic ‘Monophonic Nightmare’. The machines hold their own against nature: ‘Banjo’ is a straight up MPC/synth funk jam played over three notes, the hypnotic arpeggios of ‘Unfurla’ are underpinned by a solid 4/4 kick drum, peak-rave euphoria is captured in ‘There’s a Distance In You’. At its essence 'Grit In The Pearl' is more Berghain than Guggenheim - a club banger, albeit in a parallel dimension filtered through the 'Clark' lens, lending new context to its spiralling rave chords.

The theme of reduction, a sculpture of sound, wins out in the end. Closing beatless piece 'Everlane' is a cathartic conclusion to ‘Clark’, the elements ultimately refined into timeless, ethereal melodies echoing into the ages: "It straddles this fine line of being ultimate bliss and sadness at the same time. In the 1960s and into the 1970s jazz music in the USA was in an almost constant state of revolution, with the music and lives of African-­‐ American artists radicalised by the advent of the civil rights movement, Black Power, and a new spiritual awakening.

For over 20 years now Soul Jazz Records have been exploring this rich area of deep and spiritual jazz music with an array of albums such as Freedom, Rhythm and Sound, Universal Sounds of America, New Thing, Soul Jazz Love Strata East and more. The ‘Killing Season’ EP is the first collaborative release from Kode9 & The Spaceape since their 2011 album ‘Black Sun’.

The lyrical themes explored on The Spaceape's 2012 Haitian-inspired EP ‘Xorcism’ are expanded. The emotional, spiritual and psychological effects of living with illness and the "unknown" are dissected wryly, but often with unforgiving brutality, in this new batch of songs.

'Chasing A Beast', depicts a nightmarish scenario where the cards are clearly stacked, culminating with our character's nemesis, "..a white magic woman" offering "..a gun or a knife". 'Devil Is A Liar', spits in the eye of those who live in fear of "burning in hell".

'Heart' unhooks the life support and strips back the beats onto which The Spaceape grieves for this "vital organ", languidly delivering a litany of deceit and betrayal perpetrated by our "souls sacred ghetto". 'Pictures On The Wall' wryly paints its own picture of the stasis one finds oneself in, as images stare back, depicting a world far from their own. After spending her teens touring Australia in punk and soul groups she lurked the Brooklyn noise scene for half a decade. In late 2012 at the end of a European tour in support of her debut solo album (originally released under the moniker Happy New Year) she became stranded in France when her return flight to Brooklyn was cancelled due to Hurricane Sandy. Waiting for her replacement flight, she passed the time in Lyon penning songs in a friend's living room. Within a week she had decided to relocate to France for good.

The first new long player from GODFLESH since 2001's Hymns which saw the band implode and then eventually split up following its release. The band reformed in early 2010, and has gone on to play many renowned festivals worldwide coupled with minimal but solid touring. Since the reformation new material has slowly but very surely been both discussed and worked on, although Justin K Broadrick stated that the eagerness to release new music should not be overcome by the band’s new found popularity. This album, like the Decline & Fall EP that came before it, have been works in progress for almost 2 years. "The music speaks entirely for itself, this is pure GODFLESH, as the concept was originally intended; minimal, brutal, dissonant, driven by machines yet paradoxically dominated by organic and harsh down tuned guitars and bass, clean dub inflected vocals offset against harsh raging minimal shouts, and this is not to forget the worship of the omnipresent groove. Although the band could now be considered mature, and often with this maturity comes peace, this album has been perceived as the most aggressive and consistently fierce release in the band's career, something that the band are very proud of."

& the

Erin Harpe & the Delta Swingers’ unique brand of dance music is rooted in vintage 1930’s Mississippi delta blues, then shaken and stirred with their take on other genres like soul, funk, and reggae. 2012’s Boston Music Award-winners for “Blues Artist of the Year,” this band evokes a southern juke joint where the whiskey and gin are flowing and everybody’s dancing.

Growing up in the Washington DC area, Erin learned to play Delta Blues guitar at an early age from her dad, Maryland area bluesman Neil Harpe. She soon began performing at folk festivals, coffee houses, bars, and parties in the DC area, developing a strong guitar and vocal style of her own. Landing in Boston, she released two acoustic blues albums – Blues Roots (2002), and Delta Blues Duets (2008), featuring duets TRACKS: 01. The Delta Swing with her dad. Erin’s travels brought her an appreciation of other music styles like Afro02. Love Whip Blues Beat and reggae, and she simultaneously 03. Future Blues started a world-funk electro-dance band called 04. Good Luck Baby Lovewhip, which has released five albums on 05. M&O Blues Erin’s own Juicy Juju Records.

In 2010 Erin Harpe & the Delta Swingers was born, a deep blues-based 06. One Way Man 07. Pick Poor Robin Clean dance band with a wealth of influences.
