Animal Style Records Animal Style spawned from a Southern California apartment in 2008 in an effort to release some of our favorite music on vinyl. The label has been fortunate enough to work with an array of amazing bands and has never been tied down to one genre of music. As huge music nerds ourselves, we want to share the bands we love and think you should be discovering. Nearly 7 years later the mission remains the same – promoting the bands we love and sharing them to new ears.

VINYL RELEASE DATE: NOVEMBER 28, 2015 RECORD STORE DAY BLACK FRIDAY EXCLUSIVE
After a 2014 tour that included sold-out shows and special performances everywhere from NPRs Fresh Air to A Prairie Home Companion, Nick Lowe’s Quality Holiday Revue will return to the US in December for a dozen shows in all-new markets. Mute, Mexican-wrestling-mask-clad superheroes Los Straitjackets will serve as Lowe’s backing band. Just before the launch of Nick Lowe’s Quality Holiday Revue Tour 2015, Yep Roc Records is releasing Nick Lowe & Los Straitjackets’ The Quality Holiday Revue Live LP for Record Store Day Black Friday, November 27. Recorded live in Boston last year, the LP captures a performance the Boston Herald called “spectacular…what an amazing concept…what an amazing show.” The album contains a few holiday classics, alongside some of Nick Lowe’s most beloved songs.

PUBLIC IMAGE LTD LATEST ALBUM : WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS NOW "...a return to the snot-crusted power chords of Lydon’s youth"- SPIN "What The World Needs Now builds on This Is PiL in just about every way, taking the band in new directions while remaining rooted in the sound that PiL invented so long ago. For those who thought the band's 2012 return album was a one-shot burst, you're dead wrong, and you're lucky you are." - Punk News "Public Image Ltd's tenth studio album finds Lydon as restlessly aggressive and sardonically astute as ever. FLOATING POINTS - ELAENIA “Elaenia certainly isn’t built for the pop charts, but its soulful precision can’t help but act as a magnet for open ears. It’s about as welcoming as an uncategorizable experiment in modern sonic architecture could possibly be.” - Pitchfork (Sept. 2015) “Very, very creative. This sounds good—a really clean sound. I’d like to meet him some day.” - Pharoah Sanders on Elaenia

Elaenia is a dazzling score which puts Floating Points—a.k.a. Sam Shepherd—in the spotlight as a composer who bridges the gap between his rapturous dance music and formative classical roots. Growing up in Manchester—he started out as a chorister at an early age—Shepherd eventually arrived in London for university, where he spent the next five years recording Elaenia, all the while DJing in cities across the globe and working towards his PhD in neuroscience. An album that draws inspiration from classical, jazz, electronic music, soul and even Brazilian popular music, Elaenia— named after the bird of the same name— is the epitome of the forward-thinking Floating Points vision in 2015. Like his contemporaries Caribou and Four Tet, Shepherd has nurtured the Floating Points name into one renowned for ambitious and forwardthinking DJ sets, having performed all over the world at events and clubs such as Output NYC, Trouw, Sonar, Unit in Tokyo, Panorama Bar and, of course, Nuits Sonores (which lent its name to his seminal

Elaenia also features a huge variety of contributors, including drums from Tom Skinner and Leo Taylor plus vocals from Rahel Debebe-Dessalegne, Layla Rutherford and Shepherd himself. Elsewhere there’s Susumu Mukai taking up bass, Qian Wu and Edward Benton sporting violins, Matthew Kettle on the viola, Alex Reeve on guitar and Joe Zeitlin on the cello.

RECENT PRESS “A f t e r F i v e Ye a r s , F l o a t i n g Points’ Debut Album Elaenia Is Finally About to Drop!” - VICE “… an astral landscape alongside a symphony of sweeping emotive strings and fusion jazz-funk melodies that suggest Stravinsky more than house and bass. Even if he’s widely known for his sharpness on the decks, Shepherd’s M.O. is to be as maximal in every genre he expresses himself in— which Silhouettes does luxuriously. “ - Dummy Mag

By building a harmonograph from scratch! He then connected 2 fibre optic cables to light sources, which responded to the bass drum and white noise percussive sounds of the album track ‘For Marmish’… how about that?!

Between their critically acclaimed self-titled debut album and incendiary live shows, Cheatahs proved themselves to be one of the most exciting leftfield guitar bands to come out of the UK in recent years. The London-based band demonstrates their devotion to experimentation even further across their new album Mythologies, leaving behind their debut’s hazy, nostalgic world for an ambitious Technicolor universe in which motorik rhythms, garage and ambient punk flow seamlessly into one another.
“They’ve gone from straight-up Swervedriver-style shoegaze into the related, but prettier, dreampop realm.” -BROOKLYN VEGAN

“I just don’t want to cry so much anymore,” says the band of the writing process and theme behind the new album. “Lots of horrible things happen to us all—friends and lovers move on or drop dead, everything changes right under our feet, and just when you start to understand something, you realize that you have no clue and it slips away. But all this pain and conflict allows us to come back with a bigger heart, with the ability to laugh in the face of any demon, to expose yourself, literally and metaphorically, to anything and feel good about it and yourself. Life is shit and if we all wink and laugh, then we can enjoy the ephemeral moments that bring us pleasure. Music brings me that pleasure so I try and do it as much as possible.” Babes honed their skills recording with producers and songwriters such as Steve Lindsey (Leonard Cohen, Elton John), Jeff Barry (The Dixie Cups, The Ronettes, Phil Spector), Benji Hughes (Jeff Bridges), Charlie Midnight (James Brown) and Matthew Wilder (Christina Aguilera, Kelly Clarkson, Miley Cyrus). Untitled (Five Tears) follows their self-titled and self-produced EP releases on Harvest Records in 2014, which Buzzbands LA says “oozes with the beauty and innocence of pop’s past” and Stereogum raves, “…retro strains of girl-group pop and twee in a way that will resonate with Camera Obscura fans.” “Babes is Velvet Underground meets The Ronettes in a Lynch film.” - Gorilla vs Bear “Under this ruckus lies the band’s oozingly slow synth and Leigh’s timeless voice.” Stereogum “Oozes with the beauty and innocence of pop’s past.” - Buzzbands LA “Now the City of Angels is launching Babes, who are a self-described ‘locomotive sex drive down a trail of tears.’”- A.V. Ólafur Arnalds and Nils Frahm announce Double-CD release ‘Collaborative Works’ – comprising all three vinyl EPs ‘Loon’, ‘Stare’ and ‘Life Story Love And Glory’ as well as 7 new songs from their ‘Trance Frendz’ studio film ‘Stare’ (2012) was the very first collaborative recording made by Ólafur Arnalds and Nils Frahm – a true family effort featuring long-time collaborator and cellist Anne Müller, which took place in 2011 between Reykjavík and Berlin. Originally released as a strictly limited 10-inch vinyl record exclusive on Record Store Day 2012, this long sold-out must-have was re-issued on July 17, 2015 – this time in 12-inch format. Óli and Nils recorded and mixed their first collaborative record between Reykjavík and Berlin as a surprise release for label founder Robert Raths. ‘Loon’ (2015) is a synthesiser-led 5-track EP that was recorded in autumn 2014 across five days at Nils’s Durton Studio in Berlin, and continues with the ambient sounds of ‘Stare’ but with the addition of more percussive elements and dub influences. For ‘Loon’ they wired the Oberheim 4 Voice and a Korg PS3100 to the patch bay/mixing desk and performed live takes. With all four hands on its pots, all mixes were recorded straight onto 2-track ½-inch tape. 'Life Story Love And Glory' (2015) is a 2-track live improv affair on two pianos, recorded at Nils’s Durton Studio in October 2012, the day before the two went on the road for the Erased Tapes 5th Anniversary Tour. It was released on August 21, 2015 as a surprise available through record stores only, two weeks ahead of its digital release. ‘Trance Frendz’ (2015) is the audio recording of their intimate 45-minute studio film. Originally planned as a short video session of previously released tracks, instead the two ended up recording seven brand new improvisations – showcasing the nature of their musical friendship. It was revealed on September 1, 2015 as part of their joint website www.arnaldsfrahm.com "The music on this CD is a collection of our studio collaborations from recent years. We would meet in Reykjavik or Berlin with the intention to share some days off work, hiking, swimming or eating pizza. That is great for a couple days, but after a while we would always end up back in the studio, fiddling with synths or pianos. This collection of recordings cannot be an album. It will remain a collage of our studio experiments of the past. It simply is convenient to have them all together here, so you don’t need to look out for some limited 10” somewhere or deal with a nerdy record dealer in Japan to track down this one 7 ̋ which will turn out to sound pretty rough anyways... consider them as moments in space and time where we shared the same room for some days to come down and enjoy making music. After deciding to release the studio collaborations, we planned to do a video session of us performing an improvised duet to promote the release. On the 28th of July 2015 we met up at Durton Studio in Berlin and invited Alexander Schneider and his camera to document it. But instead of ending the session after the first take we continued improvising throughout the night, ending up with several new pieces written and recorded in 8 hours with no overdubs and no edits. We felt there was something special in these songs as they arrived so quickly and unexpectedly, remembering that our friendship and collaboration originally started with live improvisation on stage. At the end of the night we had all this music that sounded unfamiliar even to us, loudly asking to be included in this collection.” (Ólafur Arnalds & Nils Frahm)
CARAVAN PALACE <I°_°I>
Caravan Palace will release <I°_°I>, their third studio album, on October 30th 2015. Created in their Parisian studios, where the electro-pioneers fuse hedonistic house and old school jazz to glorious effect, <I°_°I> evokes the spirit of a modernistic Quintette du Hot Club de France. The musical sound bed for the vocally explosive, burlesqueblazoning Zoe Colotis is created by the band’s three founder members Hughes Paven (violin), Charles Delaporte (upright bass) and Arnaud Vial (guitar), plus Camille Chapelière (clarinet) & Antoine Toustou (trombone and electronics) over the beats provided by Paul-Marie Barbier (vibraphone, washboard, piano). The result is a decadent, potent cocktail of jazz manouche, hip-hop, jive, house and beats that defies simple categorisation. The band’s appeal has grown off-radar, appreciated for both their musical virtuosity and their sheer ability to deliver a ballistic good time. Having originally formed in 2005 the band’s eponymous debut album in 2008 set the tone - a rip-roaring party, bursting with fun and good humour. This album went on to define a new sound called Electro Swing, while charting in their native France where it quickly attained a platinum sales award. The second album, 2012’s ‘Panic’, featuring the massive tunes ‘Clash’ and ‘Rock It For Me’ remains a treat to listen to, whether in a burlesque bar or at home. Since its release the band’s live profile has risen unrelentingly, their concert tickets flying out with minimum promotion and zero-hype across the USA, a true word-of-mouth sensation that earned them a spot at Coachella last year. With this new album, and the recent use of their music in a Diet Coke commercial, America is about to truly discover Caravan Palace.

ODESZA
“LIGHT EP” Street Date: LP-10/30/2015 COUNT052X
The indomitable ODESZA have owned summer 2015 drawing some of the largest crowds around at every major music festival including Coachella, Outside Lands, Bonnaroo, Governors Ball and Lollapalooza, where they recently performed with members of the Chicago Bulls’ drum line. With an enduring live performance and a break neck production schedule that has resulted in recent remixes for Hayden James and Emancipator, Harrison Mills and Clayton Knight continue to refine their craft and outshine their peers. The genesis for “Light” begins in 2014. Little Dragon asked ODESZA to do a remix of a song off their last album, Nabuma Rubberband, but their label accidentally sent ODESZA the stems for a new song that was not on that album. In the midst of a sold out 2014 North American headline tour in support of In Return, ODESZA was too busy to complete a remix. Months after the remix idea was shelved, ODESZA and Little Dragon played a co-headline show in Boston, inspiring an idea to write a new ODESZA track and build it around the Little Dragon vocal stem. Little Dragon’s distinct vocal and ODESZA’s expert production combine to create a late contender for song of the summer, “Light.”
HIGHLIGHTS 10” Includes Live version of hit single “Say My Name” Featuring Little Dragon Black ink, printed onto a metallic gold board, with HD matte laminate applied and black print inside.

YPPAH
‘TINY PAUSE’
Street Date: CD 10/16 LP 10/30/2015 COUNT069 / COUNTCD069 Having amassed a legion of loyal fans with his signature blend of electronic, psychedelic and rock influences, the artist known as Yppah (pronounced “yip-ah”) is back with perhaps his most intimate work to date. Tiny Pause, due for release on Counter Records October 16, finds Yppah adopting an enormous technical shift in his writing process, moving away from largely software-based production and live instrumentation to modular synthesizers and samplers. Inspired in large part by 8mm footage and self-described “creepy/beautiful” archived film found on the internet, Yppah draws on the same palette of the living landscape, human memory and emotive warmth found in his prior work and magnifies it. Tiny Pause is informed in large part by shifts in Yppah’s life since his last work. Having toured the album, moved from Texas to Southern California and transitioned into more ambitious commercial work (for trailers, sound design and music libraries), Yppah soon found himself embracing hardware in a big way, buying and selling gear constantly while writing to find the best-suited combination for his workflow. The addition of two dogs to his home and a newfound hobby of surfing round out Yppah’s biggest influencers for the direction of the new record. And it all shows - the celestial dips and rises in “Occasional Magic,” the cascade of drums in “Little Dreamer,” the fractured ascent of “Spider Hands,” and the human-tinged glitches of “Neighborhoods” all point to an artist matured not only in sound but in perspective. HIGHLIGHTS e.g. LP includes download code

Travis Egedy is the Technomancer. You'll know him as Pictureplane, the Brooklyn-based multimedia artist whose forays against the status quo have disrupted fashion, galleries, and music in kind. While his 2011 album, Thee Physical, explored sensation and human touch, his newest dives into more ethereal territory: the anxiety of daily life in an era defined by constant technological interaction and observation. But the 11 songs heard here — fleshed out using sonic scraps of industrial, darkwave, '80s EBM, '90s house — aren't purely paranoiac. As the title implies, Technomancer is as much about rediscovering the magic in our relationship with our machines. "Sick Machine" opens the album with squelching retrofuturist synth and thick fuzzy bass, quickly taking a hard left into bounding bleak-pop as Egedy coos about finding euphoria in the ruins of shopping malls. A song later, over the sampled rap snippets and diva moans of "Esoterrorist," he declares, "I'm feeling paranormal again," and it sounds less like lament than a return to Pictureplane's comfort zone. "Harsh Realm" similarly celebrates "anarchy and ecstasy" while wild drum and bass rhythms weave through a surging sequence. He aims lines at an unseen colluder — "Fuck me like you mean it" — hurtling through thick aural atmosphere toward the song's titular place.

Sick Machine Esoterrorist Joyrider Death Condition Street Pressure Harsh Realm Self Control Chaos Radical Technomancer Riot Porn Live Forever
Technomancer was recorded across three years in Egedy's garage, then finished in proper studios in New York and Los Angeles. He was also touring the world with the likes of Major Lazer and Crystal Castles, exhibiting his visual art in galleries abroad, and reading the works of Robert Bauval and Graham Hancock, men whose research in alt archaeology and ancient tech may help unlock truths about where humankind has been and, more importantly, where we're headed. The two tracks featuring Skin Town's Grace Hall ("Self Control," "Live Forever") deal with a controversial future that may already be upon us: where reality, even mortality, is able to be engineered. But for all the eerie Vangelis-style ambiance ("Chaos Radical"), warped rave oddity ("Joyrider"), and distressing mechanized clang ("Death Condition"), Pictureplane's latest is best defined by its title track. "Technomancer" finds our host grabbing the reigns of the beast, and suggesting that we do the same: "Manipulate your machine," he sings over an electronic score that feels positively alive, "You're a technomancer."

STEVEN LAMBKE – DAYS OF HEAVEN Release Date: October 30, 2015 Label: You’ve Changed Records Catalog: YC-023 Format: LP (with download), CD Memory is the daughter of heaven and earth, and the muse is a daughter of memory and everything. It is traditional for an artist to call on the muse at the beginning of an endeavour. This suggests that the great works of art begin, not in the presence of the muse, but in her absence. – Amanda Jernigan What one can't speak, that one must pass over in silence - Wittgenstein. If Steven Lambke were a bird he'd be a Zeppelin – Daniel Romano

Days of Heaven is the stunning, intimate album by acclaimed songwriter Steven Lambke. The lyrics, pared to the poetic essentials and dealing with love, loss, and memory, are wise in their unknowing and sung in a quiet, true voice over rich layers of Lambke’s own guitars. Tamara Lindeman of The Weather Station sings harmony and duet vocals throughout and created beautiful string arrangements with violinist Mika Posen (Timber Timbre, Agnes Obel). Darcy Hancock (Ladyhawk) and Ian Kehoe (of Marine Dreams) also appear. It’s a rich, warm, and natural record, evoking the spirit of early Leonard Cohen, the raw curiousity of Tim Hardin, or the recent spare work of Bill Callahan. Renowned visual artist Shary Boyle’s ceramic sculpture La Lune graces the cover; grace and muse, a thing of beauty. In 2009 Steven Lambke co-founded You’ve Changed Records and has overseen celebrated releases from Daniel Romano, The Weather Station, Nap Eyes, Shotgun Jimmie, and Marine Dreams. He is a member of The Constantines (SubPop Records) and has collaborated with John K Samson (The Weakerthans). Under the pseudonym Baby Eagle, he released four sophisticated and increasingly raucous solo albums. Days of Heaven, the first album released under his own name, is a different kind of masterpiece: intimate, tender, and brave. RIYL: Bill Callahan, Tim Hardin, Lhasa de Sela, Howe Gelb, Leonard Cohen

BORN RUFFIANS RUFF
CD RELEASE DATE: OCTOBER 2, 2015 LP RELEASE DATE: OCTOBER 30, 2015 RUFF, the newest album from Born Ruffians, is an exploration into self and aesthetics that you will want to tag along for. It’s a collection of scrubbed raw anthems that are defiantly optimistic, imaginatively arranged and performed with a sense of bloodlust. In contrast to previous records from this Canada-based quartet, RUFF is simultaneously a return to form and a departure from convention. It is at once a culmination and a disassembly of the band’s history and dynamics. RUFF took shape from a singular focus on the work itself, and exploration into the relation of candor, immediacy and art. “We had one overarching goal this time out: to make the album we wanted to make. We took nothing else into consideration,” says bassist Mitch Derosier. Over four albums, Born Ruffians have developed a signature aesthetic that encompasses tightly wound, trapezoidal songs frothing over with hooks and wryly cathartic lyrics. The group has garnered favorable comparisons to such quirky pop infiltrators as the Talking Heads, The Pixies and The Strokes. Onstage, the band is arousing and assaulting, coming off somewhere between a riot and a soul revue. Born Ruffians are Luke Lalonde (guitar/vocals), Mitch Derosier (bass), Andy Lloyd (guitar/keyboard) and Adam Hindle (drums). RUFF was written in ebbs and flows: the origin of some tracks stretch back to 2013 and others came together in a matter of days, or in a single band practice. Jeff McMurrich (Jennifer Castle, The Constantines, Fucked Up) recorded RUFF in just three weeks in Toronto. The band’s trusted friend Rusty Santos (Animal Collective, Eric Copeland, Owen Pallett) – who produced their acclaimed album, Red, Yellow & Blue, and its follow up, Say It – mixed RUFF in New York. RUFF stands as a poignant marriage of form, content and process that is without a doubt Born Ruffians’ most focused and mature work to date.

The Necks Vertigo “One of the greatest bands in the world” — New York Times “[O]ne of the most mesmerizing records of the year: an hourlong, labyrinthine, uninterrupted dream.” — Grayson Currin, SPIN “[A] deeply immersive record that highlights The Necks’ oftenunbelievable instrumental interplay and melodic sensitivity.” — Tyler Wilcox, Aquarium Drunkard “[T]hey’ve moved toward their own kind of collectively intuitive, process-oriented minimalism. It’s a music that toys with and questions typical narrative development, at a speed slower than what’s comfortable for most listeners. It frustrates our pattern-recognizing abilities, our need for emotional engagement, our desire for payoff. The music does grow intense, but that’s not the point. It does proceed through changes that sound logical, but that’s not the point, either.” — Ben Ratliff, New York Times ”Absolutely riveting...how three musicians can sound like eighteen is a mystery... extraordinary magical sounds emerged from the ensemble...the way The Necks do this with acoustic instruments is nothing short of miraculous” — Financial Times (UK)
The Necks’ 18th album Vertigo is an eventful, kaleidoscopic tone poem set against a darkly shimmering background. Slowly but inexorably moving forward, it crosses many frontiers yet remains true to the mission and mood established in the opening stanzas of this cinematic 44 minute journey. A work able to be viewed either as a whole, or two symmetrical halves, Vertigo sees The Necks once again offer an excursion in sound that reflects both the light and darkness of some preternatural world. Vertigo will be released on 30th October in North America by Northern Spy Records. It follows their acclaimed 2013 album Open, described by SPIN as ‘the most beautiful album of the year’. In contrast to the sustained improvisations that are their live performances, The Necks’ studio albums take shape by way of intricate crafting brought to bear throughout the entire recording and mixing process. “The discussion this time really began in earnest in the session itself, where we started to pursue the idea of having a drone running from start to finish, off which we could hang ideas,” said bassist Lloyd Swanton “But like all Necks albums we ended up in a very different place from whatever our initial notion of it had been.” Maintaining a teetering tension between suspension and collapse, Vertigo draws on a diverse palette of sounds created in the studio by Tony Buck (drums/percussion/guitar), Lloyd Swanton (bass) and Chris Abrahams (piano/keyboards), featuring everything from homemade instruments, extended instrumental techniques and marathon explorations of sonic textures. One piece, at the same time two. Monochrome, yet multicoloured. Dark, yet incandescent. Expansive and still. Melancholic and exhilarating. The Necks. Vertigo.
”...Entirely new and entirely now...They produce a post-jazz, post-rock, post-everything sonic experience that has few parallels or rivals. They may teach us to listen in a new way, but they communicate a fierce energy and warmth at the same time. Their music is a thrilling, emotional journey into the unknown. Like seeing a world in a grain of sand, The Necks permit us to hear a whole new world of music in a sliver of sound” — The Guardian (UK)
ROOTS MANUVA ‘BLEEDS’
Street Date: 10/30/2015 BD269 / BD269C / BDCD269 Not only one of Britain’s greatest musical artists, but one of the greatest lyricists full stop, Roots Manuva is back with a dazzling new album, ‘Bleeds’. Past collaborations with everyone from Gorillaz to the Maccabees to Leftfield to Coldcut to the Cinematic Orchestra, Rodney Smith’s influence can be heard right across the musical landscape. Now, with his sixth studio album, he has made his most concise and focussed record to date, his most emotionally affecting and powerful release since his breakthrough, ‘Run Come Save Me.’ Drawing upon production assistance from young British producer, Fred, together with musical heavyweights Four Tet, Adrian Sherwood and Switch’s new production team, With You, the title of the record is, in the man’s own words, an “egocentric jest of daring to do things in the tradition of Jesus: I’m ready to bleed for the artform.” It is, of course, also a reference to the way in which genres, in the sonic world of Roots Manuva, have a tendency to bleed into one another, so that hip hop, reggae, techno, funk, neo-classical, all blend together to create “liquid soul, the blood, the bleeds that paint infinite sacred wonders in our dreams and unfold in our day-to-day.” HIGHLIGHTS LP includes download code Limited Edition Colored vinyl available for independent retailers Artwork by Leif Podhajsky

FAT FREDDY’S DROP BAYS
DRP025 CD / LP / LP LTD EDITION
Fat Freddy’s Drop are set to release their fourth studio album, ‘BAYS’, on October 30th 2015.
The album exudes a confidence of a band truly comfortable in their skin.
Following the worldwide success of ‘Blackbird’ in 2013, the New Zealand based seven-piece are back with ‘BAYS’, a 9-track LP recorded at the band’s BAYS Studio in Kilbirnie, Wellington a former 1950s HMV vinyl pressing plant.
“It’s been a more creative process writing this album in the studio rather than recording songs which have been well roadtested”, Freddy’s vocalist Joe Dukie said.
The predominantly studio written album draws on the lexicon of genres that have come to epitomize the bands’ sound. Opening with the slow burn funk of ‘Wairunga Blues’ the album journeys through a hybrid of reggae, jazz with techno rhythms underpinning Freddy’s signature horns and Joe Dukie’s soulful and introspective vocal, arriving finally on the crooked blues jam of ‘Novak’. Internationally, Fat Freddy’s Drop reputation continues to soar. Blackbird has sold over 200,000 album copies worldwide with the UK, US and Germany becoming the bands strongest markets. This success is reflected by recent live highlights including sold out gigs at London’s 10,000 capacity Alexandra Palace and 3x Sydney Opera House shows. The BAYS album tour will start in October in Australia and roll out worldwide into 2016.

V O Y E U R VOYEUR IS THE SIXTH ALBUM FROM URSULA 1000, THE BROOKLYN BASED MULTI-INSTRUMENTALIST ALSO KNOWN AS ALEX GIMENO
AFTER RELEASING HIS 5 PREVIOUS ALBUMS ON THIEVERY CORPORATION'S EIGHTEENTH STREET LOUNGE IMPRINT, VOYEUR IS THE DEBUT ALBUM ON URSULA'S OWN INSECT QUEEN MUSIC LABEL!
For this new adventure, Ursula is bringing in a real tropical summer feel. ""SUPERSONIC SUPERSONIC SOUNDS" SOUNDS is a Latin funk bomb that name checks Ursula and is the perfect theme song to lead things off. ""CLAP CLAP YOUR HANDS"" harks back to some classic big beat break action with its infectious call and response party vibe. "BLAST OFF!"" features legendary New York City drag queen Lady Bunny in this electro disco monster that sounds like Sylvester and Patrick Cowley hanging with New Order in outer space! "TROPICAL TROPICAL INTENTION" INTENTION" is just that...a serious salsa house killer. "BALEARIX" "BALEARIX"" features the talents of Federico Aubele on Spanish guitar reminiscing to that classic Balearic/Cafe Del Mar period but tweaked for today. ""II GOT WHAT YOU NEED" NEED" brings the tempo down a pinch and features the sounds of neo-mod-soul group The Lovers Key in this dusty cinematic hip hop lovers lament. Next up, we take a plunge into ""FADED FADED DENIM WASH", WASH", a slow motion cosmic nu-disco number drenched in summer sunshine. Chillwave? Vaporwave? Nah, just faded denim wave! ""DANCING DANCING UNDERGROUND" flirts with classic french touch filtered disco house and features some slinky live bass from Mocean Worker channeling his inner most Bernard Edwards of Chic and topping it off with some Zapp-esque vocoder brilliance from QDUP. We wrap things up with a lush version of the 60's classic ""THE THE SHADOW OF YOUR SMILE" SMILE" featuring the velvet baritone voice of Puddles Pity Party, a 6ft 8in towering inferno of sad clown crooner who absolutely owns this take on the epic torch song. Ursula's brought in Tom Coveney from the UK duo Psychemagik to master it all, giving it that unique sheen. The first single ““FADED DENIM WASH”” comes with some action packed remixes from the likes of Seahawks, Abelard, Payfone and Robot 84. Upcoming remixes from Fonkynson, Skeewiff, Renegades Of Jazz, Sons Of Satin, Eli Escobar, Manotti Da Vinci and Minimatic are already in the can for some of the other album tracks.

PRESENTS
Rim and Kasa “Too Tough” Rim and The Believers “I'm Not Going To Let You Go” About Following hot on the heels of our well-received reissue of his first album, Rim Arrives, we now present the two other key records that have made this a cult figure for lovers of both African music and ‘disco’ in its widest sense. Too Tough, a superb three track EP from 1982, on Sum-Sum Records, was credited to Rim and Kasa, whilst he issued the cracking 12” I’m Not Going To Let You Go as Rim And The Believers for Harmony Records the following year. Too Tough kicks off with Shine The Ladies, an epic Afro-disco jam in call and response format, with the female lead vocals (Ms. Anita Berry) prompting a series of replies from the backing vocalists, setting the scene for a series of exciting solos set against a backdrop of punchy horns and swirling synths; tenor sax, guitar, drums (introduced with chants of ‘Play me some drums!’) and vibes all take a turn before the track fades out, clocking in just short of nine minutes. Next up is Love Me For Real, reminiscent of August Darnell with its girlie vocals and Latin flavour, ending with a mad swirl of synths and Rim’s own vocals. And lastly, I’m A Songwriter is cosmic Afro-reggae, bringing to mind Roy Ayers in his Fela phase, given a mad punk-funk twist … this one has to be heard to be believed! The mood changes with I’m Not Going To Let You Go, which eschews the female chorus for an altogether mellower, instrumental ride, veering from out-there cosmic synth vibes to loungey jazz piano. It’s original flip, Peace of Mind, raw Afro-boogie track with a male vocal, is also included. Those of you who had been searching in vain for Rim’s oeuvre for some years now having had it handed to you on a platter (well, two platters, actually), will be pleased to know that there is yet more material from the man Rim Kwaku Obeng to come from us at BBE …watch out for the digital-only release of four previously unreleased cuts from this legend of Afro-disco, taken from a long-lost acetate!

About Obsessive collector, record store owner and mine of musical knowledge, Zaf is vinyl junkie of the highest order. His first ‘Private Wax’ compilation came in 2012 and immediately became a highly sought after gem, due to the rare and wonderful disco and boogie contained within. Owning the world’s premiere website for rare records (www.zafsmusic.com) and counting Gilles Peterson & Norman Jay among his customers allows Zaf a near superhuman selection of music to choose from, so anyone worried that he might have used up all his best tunes on Volume 1 can relax. From the shimmering Disco of Starvue’s ‘Love Affair’, which opens up the album, right through to the uplifting last track, Wes Black’s ‘I Feel Good’, it’s clear we are in the hands of a master curator. Containing only original versions, literally thousands of pounds’ worth of rare records have been lovingly re-mastered to build this very special package. With the current disco and funk revival making headway into the charts, this compilation of authentic, original material could not be timelier. From dance-floor oriented disco monsters to more subtle boogie jams, the album takes the listener on a journey from the nightclub to the streets of 70’s and 80’s Black America, where the early experimental blueprint for hip hop and house can clearly be heard in so much of the music.

Hear how dark winter nights and bright Christmas lights spiral in a languid, intimate dance of joy, heartbreak and redemption, as any given year winds down. Three complete albums, 34 tracks, a soulful wintry mix unlike any other. “Over the Rhine’s Christmas songs might be the best soundtrack since A Charlie Brown Christmas for feeling melancholy and lovesick in December. The music practically begs to be mused upon over one hot drink or another.” — SEATTLE WEEKLY “Knowing the season sparks a multitude of emotions, they explore loneliness, romance, hope, spirituality, wonder and forgiveness, subjects wrapped in music that’s evocatively atmospheric and irresistibly melodic.” — LOS ANGELES TIMES “Most Christmas music lands with the sickening thud of a fruitcake. It’s treacly, larded and fake. The veteran band known as Over the Rhine understand this completely, so they’ve sought to make their holiday albums dry-eyed assessments of this fraught season. They’ve had some practice at it. The Ohio-based band covers every emotional hue brought on by the day. They’ve nailed the particular ache of another year ending, when regret and gratitude do their sad and wondrous annual dance. Hope and longing, sex and death all have their say in these songs. By wrapping up such an honest package about the season, Over the Rhine has given us a gift we can use.” — NY DAILY NEWS

About
Somerset Catalog is a bubblegum doom-pop outfit from Denver, Colorado. What is bubblegum doom-pop? Glad you asked, and Somerset Catalog has the answer. For those who follow Colorado music closely, Somerset Catalog is a dream team. The roster includes former members of Alan Alda, Bela Karoli, Everything Absent or Distorted (a love story), Instant Empire, and Rabbit is a Sphere, plus members currently in Poet’s Row and The Big Get Even. While this list of bands brings a certain pedigree to Somerset Catalog, at the end of the day it’s all just name dropping. Oftentimes, supergroups are great on paper, as if the members of the brilliant bands that preceded will add up to some sort of mega-brilliance in the "super" group, but in reality don’t gel, are much worse than the individual parts. That’s not the case with Somerset Catalog. Somerset Catalog is not a supergroup formed in a lab, rather the group seemed to gather spontaneously just days before they performed at the Underground Music Showcase in 2012. And as much as the astute listener may try to find traces of the bands that came before, this is not Frankenstein music, but a new thing entirely. The band makes music that moves between desperate longing and loud resignation, pop music with an unspoken, lurid past doing naughty things that scratch the sheen. Although the band takes their lyrics and melodies very seriously, an undercurrent of self-reflexive joy reassures the audience of Somerset’s playful intent.

Testimonial
"Lonely Fang" is a monument to bittersweetness, carved out of jagged and fractured rock, proud in the face of blinding rain and wind. Its direct attack is disarming but never blunt, filtered as it is through poetic rumination. There's wistful, excruciatingly pretty songcraft in the vein of The National and Arcade Fire, and tunes that layer on the keyboard, chiming guitars and harmonized vocals a la the band's biggest influence (and sorta-previous incarnation) Everything Absent or Distorted. But there's also the upbeat "My Brother, The War," which features no small amount of simmering instrumental tension alongside unspooled lyrical mightiness. There are New Order-quality tones dangling from "Golden Balcony" and "Landing Gear" that demand unselfconscious booty shaking. Anything this textured and bronzed should naturally feel heavy. Instead, "Lonely Fang" hangs like a silky whole, a navy-blue tableaux of that moment when dusk turns to night, and despair to excitement. Steely. Teary-eyed. Determined. John Wenzel, Denver Post

LOW LUMENS : DAWN / DUSK CD/CS
btv107
Low Lumens is the moniker for the Pittsburgh based artist and musician Danny Bracken. His creative practice explores interactions between video, sound, and physical space, ranging from immersive, multi-sensory installations to small-scale sculptures. Born into a family of musicians, sound occupies a central role in his work; taking the form of film scores, installations, and stand-alone recordings. At the heart of these investigations lies an interest in the relationship between humans, the natural world, and technology. Throughout the work he explores the ways in which technology has shifted how we perceive and experience the people and places that surround us. Bracken’s music further extends this dialogue, examining the tenuous balance between digital possibility and human impression, created in a context that is constantly shifting between analog and digital realms.

The release of Dawn/Dusk is a combination of two four-song EPs that Bracken wrote and recorded between 2013-14. The all-instrumental Dawn/Dusk has moving, electronic melodies interspersed with synthetic percussive sounds, rhythms, and patterns. Dawn/Dusk sees Bracken pushing boundaries, playing between the borders of what we consider beautiful or abrasive, and testing how far a listener is willing to be pushed before losing interest. Composed almost exclusively with digital tools, Dawn/Dusk reflects the artist’s curiosity about how technology can be used for expression, while still retaining a human quality. The music of Dawn/Dusk is woven with influence from early Morr Music label releases, múm, The Books, Efterklang, Björk, Jon Hopkins, and Four Tet, with a slight melodic nod to Bracken’s musically formative experiences in the band Anathallo. While working on these songs, Bracken considered the idea of music that might not make it on a “best of” list at year’s end, perhaps records not considered as being a favorite or even “important” but ironically are the albums that we all end up playing the most. “I found these types of records the most meaningful in my everyday life,” says Bracken. “For me, some of these records have been Parables by Ryan Francesconi, Karl Burke’s Electronic Lament, Hauschka’s The Prepared Piano, and Laghdú by Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh and Dan Trueman. These are the songs that become the subtle score to our days, music played in the morning when we wake up and in the evening when we relax.” Dawn/Dusk is a reference to those daily repetitions; Bracken wanted to make music that would fit into these patterns, existing as a score for doing the dishes, while making love, or on the bus to work. As a member of the Chicago based music collective Anathallo, Bracken recorded and toured extensively throughout North America, Europe, and Japan. Following the group’s hiatus in 2009, he recorded and performed alongside former bandmate Erica Walker as the duo Doubles. In 2010, he was invited to be musician-in-residence at the acclaimed Pittsburgh installation art museum the Mattress Factory. This innovative project brought together a group of musicians from several different countries and a broad range of musical genres and interests to collaborate over a period of 16 days. The residency culminated in a live performance and, in July 2012, the full-length album A Generous Act was released. Danny has composed music for film and television, most notably contributing to the documentary Blood Brother, a 2013 Sundance Festival award winner. In conjunction with a 2014 exhibition at the Mattress Factory for the Pittsburgh Biennial, Bracken made an edition of 50 seven-inch lathe cut clear vinyl records. Featuring music composed in and for a gallery space, the records extend the exhibition’s investigation on the limits of technological mediums, our relentless affection for the physical world, and our idealization of the past and future. The records were hand-cut in real time and packaged with digitally printed inserts inside of silkscreened sleeves. The limited edition packaging for Dawn/Dusk is conceptually an extension of those lathe cut records. Using a letterpress in combination with silkscreening, Bracken’s sketches and design were printed by hand through a collaboration with printmaker Will Stichter of HYMY Industries in Philadelphia. Purposefully utilizing what might be considered antiquated printing methods in combination with outdated media formats, Bracken continues his exploration of the physical in an increasingly digital world. Danny Bracken is currently an artist-in-residence as part of the Tough Art Residency at the Children’s Museum in Pittsburgh, and keeps an active exhibition schedule as a visual artist while continuing to write material as Low Lumens.

Gatefold CD / Heavy Black & White Col Gatefold LP. Since forming in 2012 they’ve become increasingly involved with the DIY queer punk scene. Citing influences including Buzzcocks, T-Rex and C86, the new album is louder, bolder, fuller-sounding and captures more of their live sound—aided and abetted by producer MJ of Hookworms. They have toured the US, where they became the subject of a Rolling Stone documentary. Lyrically, it’s more direct than their debut, exploring issues around gender and identity. Songwriting is split between all 4 members, giving a different perspective and energy to each song.. Perhaps the standout track is “Binary”, a song about questioning gender norms, something that Nye’s experience of coming out as being trans has forced him to think about 1. Burn Masculinity 2. Heavy Weight LP (180g) + Download Code. Following ‘Lost In Sound’, Fay Hallam’s acclaimed collaboration with The Bongolian, Fay returns with new solo album ‘Corona’. Fay wrote the majority of the songs in a two day whirlwind writing session after returning from a tour of Italy, which ultimately inspired this atmospheric eclectic album. ‘Corona’ has absorbed Fay’s love for the Bossa Nova of Antonio Carlos Jobim and Astrud Gilberto, the experimental productions of the Carpenters and the eclecticism of Beck. There’s even a nod to the 50’s pop of Frankie Laine with ‘Giving Myself Away’ and a sole cover: Paul McCartney’s classic ‘Maybe I’m Amazed’ joins the new set of songs. With thoughts still fresh of driving through the Alps and soaking up the ambience, the songs took on a reflective mood displaying a softer, more atmospheric side to Fay’s music. Camel coloured vinyl with download. ‘My Ass’ is an album born out of Brinks’ life on the road, life as an outsider. It is a celebration of new drinking companions, in new bars, in new towns, every night. .‘Wakefield’, the first single has a jazzy flowing bass driving a day in the life of Brinks on tour: a sense of togetherness, a touch of sax and the knowledge that love will act as a shield against all evil. ‘Berlin’ is yet another anthemic Brinks sing-along. Its airy ambivalence celebrates both the freedom and the ensuing pressures of his beloved adoptive hometown. Stanley Brinks was born in Paris 1973. He studied a bit of biology and worked as a nurse for a while. Half Swedish, half Moroccan, strongly inclined to travel the world, he soon began spending most of his life on the road and developed a strong relationship with New York. By the late 90s he’d become a full time singer/songwriter – André Herman Düne – as part of three piece indie-rock band, Herman Düne. One can’t help but to be caught up in the tight musicality, not only in the interaction between the performers but in the performers achievements themselves – the tasteful and serene synthesizers, the riveting saxophone, the ethereal trumpet and the rock steady funk drive of the drums and bass. The album comprises nine tracks within a myriad of genres, the most obvious being a form of extended rock – rock with a dash of prog-disco and new age.
