This Issue: Conor Mackie and Dina Young at Royal Mountain Records

How did you personally get started in the music industry?

Conor (A&R): My first real music industry job was actually here at the label. I had just moved to Toronto from the UK, I knocked on the door and asked for an internship and was met with “uhhhhhh…. maybe?” and, 10 years later, here we are.

Dina (Label Manager): I moved to Toronto to pursue a career in the music industry from the west coast of Canada and have spent the last 15 years helping artists achieve their goals through various label, marketing and management roles, and keep Conor in line here.

Before working at the label did you have any experience playing in bands or making music of your own?

Conor: I’ve been playing in terrible bands since my early teens, through my 20s, and continue to play in terrible bands in my mid30s.

When and where did the label begin?

The label technically started in Montreal (we’re named after Mont-Royal) but it very quickly made its way to Toronto, which has absolutely become its real home and the only city we really associate with (no shade to Montreal, we love it there, we just ne parle pas français…)

Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix?

As a catch-all, we work with “alternative” music, but we don’t have a specific genre within that sphere that is our sole focus. We’ve released indie rock records, electronic records, punk records, folk records, emo records, hip hop records, indie pop records - basically, if it’s good and we like it, we’ll work it. Variety is the spice of life.

How has the label changed since it started? How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now?

Not too much has changed honestly (except now it’s just Conor and Dina running things) - the goals and ambitions for the label remain the same today as they did the first day we started. First and foremost, the aim has always just been to champion artists that we think are great, regardless of anything else. We try to avoid trends, or hype, or clout, and instead focus on working records that we just really love. We do that to this day, and will continue to do so - the industry may have changed and continues to, but we’ll still just be here releasing records that we care about, and hoping that other people care about them, too.

How would you describe the average fan of the label?

Obviously they’re soooo cool and soooo interesting and soooo smart and soooo funny!! But more seriously, I think our releases appeal to real fans of music who want to discover artists that maybe they haven’t heard of yet. Fans of the label are definitely openminded, and curious, and that’s something that we feel really proud of.

We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why?

Of course I have absolutely no favourites (how can you choose between your children?!), but a release that is particularly meaningful to me (Conor) personally is the debut EP from Shady Nasty, Bad Posture. From Sydney, Australia, they’re a super exciting, crazy innovative and experimental punk-adjacent trio and they were the first band that I personally signed to the label, so that one will always hold a special place in my heart, for sure. It’s basically completely out-of-print, though, but make sure you check it online. It really rips.

What is your stance on color vinyl?

I am so unbelievably down for anything that will get people interested in buying and owning physical media. As so many products and services move to subscription or streaming only models, it’s so important to connect with a physical piece of art that you actually own, that will never disappear off a cloud or be taken down once some other random billionaire media conglomerate gobbles it up. So, if you like colour vinyl, that’s sick and it makes sense - it’s pretty!!

How do you feel about the rising costs of vinyl records? And what about the continued popularity of the CD format?

Ack!!! The rising cost of vinyl is definitely less than ideal for literally everybody, but we’re always doing our best to keep our prices as low as possible in order to get physical media into the hands of as many people as want it. CDs continue to rock, as they always have and always will, and there’s just something special about being able to grab something at a merch table and stick it in your back pocket instead of having to carry around a 12” all night like a big dork (I have been this dork 10,000,000 times, and will be him 10,000,000 times more).

What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now?

Of course streaming has undeniably changed the industry, along with the rise of social media that continues to morph and change seemingly every week (or every day). There are a lot of things to complain about both of those things, for sure, but we’re also living in a world where people are really aching for a real connection to something, so I truly believe that both physical media and also genuine, real artists will prevail and continue to succeed and grow. They have to!!

How important are issues like mental health and social justice to you and the label?

Mental health is of course so important, and remains a key focus for the label in terms of providing a sustainable career for the artists we work with. So much so that we were the first label in the world to offer a Mental Health Fund for all our artists, and it’s something we continue to do to this day and are extremely proud of.

They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or sohow would you like the label to be remembered?

Just as a label that cared, that put out great records and that tried its best to make releasing music in a continuously hellish landscape as fun as it can be.

Erratics & Unconformities is the first album by Craven Faults. It follows three EPs: Netherfield Works, Springhead Works and Nunroyd Works. Long-form analogue electronic journeys across decades and continents, and swathes of post-industrial northern Britain.

The journey on Erratics & Unconformities picks up where Netherfield Works left off. We take the canal towpath out of the city. We fork north shortly afterwards. Is this where it started? The terrain gradually becomes more rugged. Familiar. Wild. Evidence of human activity is less immediate in this glacial landscape. It’s there if you seek it. But easy to ignore. If you listen carefully, you can still hear the weight of the ice-sheet carving its way through the rock.

Everything in its own time. The output from the old textile mill Craven Faults calls home is no longer as linear as it once was. There was no clear start point for the project, rather simply rediscovering the joy in experimentation with no material goals. Some of the recordings that make up Erratics & Unconformities go back almost seven years. Tracks have come and gone in that time. They don’t leave until they’ve undertaken a stringent quality control process. It started slowly, but has picked up momentum in the last eighteen months. Recorded and re-recorded to the correct level of imperfection, and then left to breathe. Mixed and remixed. Carefully compiled when the time was right.

The journey is just as important as the destination.

“I guess you could call it a lost album,” says Rodney Crowell. “I stumbled upon it in my vault at home. I’d forgotten about it completely.” He’s referring to Then Again, which he recorded and shelved two decades ago before moving off into new directions. Since then, the album has been biding its time, waiting for the moment when its songs would hit hardest. And they hit incredibly hard now, largely because age and experience have granted Crowell a richer perspective. “I’m glad I put it on the shelf, because now is the time for it. It may not be the time for it for the rest of the world, but it’s time for it for me. That’s why I wanted to call it Then Again. I thought that was a clever way of saying that what was happening then is happening now.

Back in 2006, Crowell was in high cotton. He was coming off a trilogy of albums—The Houston Kid in 2001, Fate’s Right Hand in 2003, The Outsider in 2005—that re-established him as a fearless voice in Americana and attracted new generations of fans drawn to his compassionate storytelling, his detail-laden songwriting, and his eloquent outrage over political injustices. In 2005 he went into Treasure Isle Studios in Nashville to record what would become Then Again. But when he heard the masters, something didn’t feel quite right. The band was smokin’ hot and the songs sounded good, but the album just didn’t move him and he struggled to figure out exactly what was wrong or what was missing. Twenty years later, when he found the album in his vaults, he couldn’t remember exactly what tripped him up. He decided it was finally time, if only because “I heard a record I wasn’t sick of. I was no longer sick of myself. That’s what 20 years will do for you.”

Once lost and now found, Then Again is something the Rodney Crowell of the 2000s could never have predicted but something the Rodney Crowell of the 2020s recognizes instinctively: a work of nuance, insight, and sensitivity that considers death but celebrates life. “I’m trying to understand that this spirit of mine is going to leave this body and go off somewhere else. I’ve got a pretty good idea that it’s going to be someplace good, but I still need to perfect some part of my spiritual journey here before I check out. I can see that in these songs now.”

Following the success of the 'Ayo Ke Disco' compilation (on Soundway) in late 2024, Norsicaa returns to Asia with a brand new label.

Jazz-fusion, disco-funk, Latin jazz and batucada rhythms get the Filipino treatment on After Midnight, the sublime second album from keyboardist Boy Katindig. Originally released in 1980, After Midnight draws heavy influence from soul and funk contemporaries in the US as well as Latin America, in particular the famed Brazilian percussionist Paulinho da Costa.

It’s a testament to his musical prowess that Katindig weaves effortlessly between styles and tempos. His reverence for Paulinho da Costa extends far, with covers of several songs from the latter’s 1979 Happy People album. This includes slow-burner ‘Déjà Vu’ written by Isaac Hayes originally for Dionne Warwick; on the Filipino instrumental version, local legends Jun Regalado and Roger Herrera (from Regalado’s ‘Pinoy Funk’ single) are reunited on drums and bass respectively.

But Katindig’s original compositions hold just as much weight and unique personality: title track ‘After Midnight’ opens with a sultry funk serenade reminiscent of The Isley Brothers, and quickly transforms into a catchy, blistering, saxophone chorus that brims with swagger. Hidden B-side gem ‘Got The Need’ is an uptempo tribute to batucada that would not be out of place in a jazzy house set, and boasts increasingly elaborate and psychedelic solos from Katindig on keys and Ben Concepcion on soprano sax.

Meanwhile, ‘Love Till the End of Time’ is a masterclass in instrumental disco funk, penned by the prolific Greg Phillanganes who at that same time was writing for many of the greats including Chaka Khan, George Benson, Stevie Wonder, The Jacksons and Cheryl Lynn.

Ignore the “2” in the title; this is Morton Feldman’s 1959 debut album, which by definition means it’s a key release in the history of modern classical music. Feldman’s association with the New York abstract art scene of the time is made explicit with the cover art by Philip Guston, but it’s the music, with its minimalism and emphasis on tonal color, that most clearly expresses the ethos of his visual artist peers. Perhaps the biggest influence, however—though it’s hard to say exactly who influenced whom—is John Cage, whose experiments with chance methods of composition and performance echo in Feldman’s graphic notation, which left choices of rhythm and pitch to the performers of his “Projections” and “Intersections” pieces. This release represents the first reissue of this landmark record (a later release, The Early Years, discarded the Guston album art and reshuffled the sequence), and to ensure the truest and clearest listening experience possible, we’re pressing New Directions in Music 2 on black vinyl at Gotta Groove Records. How did Dexter make a TV audience sympathize with a serial killer? No question, it took an ingenious premise, great writing, great direction…and a stellar ensemble cast headed by lead actor Michael C. Hall. But long-time viewers of the show know there was another “character” that played a huge role in the series: the soundtrack. From Rolfe Kent’s unforgettable title theme to the well-chosen Latin-tinged tunes that fit the Miami setting to composer Daniel Licht’s brilliant themes, the score of Dexter commented on the action even as it amplified its emotional power. Special mention must be made of the late Licht’s work, which employed Latin and electronic elements to portray Dexter’s warm and cold sides; among the favorites here are “Astor’s Birthday Party” and the haunting “Blood Theme” that played over the credits in every episode. Though it’s hard to pick a winner among the estimable Black Jazz catalog, this 1972 release from bassist Henry “The Skipper” Franklin would have to be near the top of the list. Franklin got his start woodshedding with Latin maverick Willie Bobo in the mid-‘60s and went on to play with The Three Sounds, but probably his most notable gig prior to this debut album was his stint in Hugh Masekela’s band (that’s Franklin playing bass with Masekela at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival). For The Skipper, Franklin assembled a crack outfit that included a horn section of trumpeter/ flugelhornist Oscar Brashear (Bobby Hutcherson, Ry Cooder, Donny Hathaway) and tenor & soprano sax man Charles Owens (Buddy Rich, Horace Tapscott, John Mayall) along with a Masekela bandmate in electric pianist Bill Henderson and ace drummer Michael Carvin (Pharoah Sanders, Lonnie Liston Smith, Freddie Hubbard). This is such a unique, organic recording that it’s hard to make comparisons; definitely a little fusion, a little ‘60s Blue Note feel, and the usual Black Jazz journey to the more lyrical, pop-inspired (“Little Miss Laurie”) and funk-infused (“Plastic Creek Stomp”) sides of jazz, but perhaps the best comparison is late-‘60s Miles before he went electric. Remastered for vinyl and featuring liner notes, this Real Gone release comes in a blue with black swirl pressing limited to just 500 copies!

Oscar Brashear, tenor/soprano saxophonist Charles Owens, and pianist Bill Henderson (here billed as Kemang Sunduza). But The Skipper at Home also boasts ace talents like keyboardist Kirk Lightsey (memorably featured on the Roland Haynes Black Jazz release 2nd Wave), trombonist Al Hall, Jr. (who appeared on Black Jazz releases from Doug Carn, Chester Thompson, and Calvin Keys), and drummer Leon “Ndugu” Chancler, who’s played with everyone from Miles Davis to Joe Henderson. The result is an album that, like The Skipper, is rooted in bop but one that nods to some of the currents that were swirling in jazz at the time; it’s a little freer, a little more electric. And, as is true of just about every Black Jazz release, the ensemble work is remarkably intuitive and swinging, driven by Franklin’s melodic, inventive bass playing. The Arkestra were at the peak of their powers in 1977, releasing revered albums like The Soul Vibration Of Man and My Favorite Things with Arkestra regulars Marshall Allen, Danny Ray Thompson, Michael Ray and Luqman Ali among the core musicians. Ra also continued his touring in Europe with historic gigs in Italy. During this period, Arkestra live performances were often loosely structured into thematic blocks that moved from reflections on jazz history to cosmic “space narrative” sections featuring collective chants, extended Africa/Egypt-inspired grooves and selections from the Great American Songbook This recording brings in all of these features with re-imagined versions of standards like ‘Take The “A” Train’ , ‘St Louis Blues’ and title track ‘Over The Rainbow’ alongside rarely recorded Ra compositions like ‘Make Another Mistake’ and ‘Amen Meni Many Amens’ Ra conducted improvisations to guide the listener seamlessly from one musical scene to the next As Sun Ra himself described it: “It’s like a party we enjoy ourselves and everybody’s invited to enjoy it with us.”

Kiasmos – Ólafur Arnalds and Janus Rasmussen – have invited five trusted artists to completely reimagine their second album, II. Released in July 2024 to critical and fan acclaim, the comeback album took the duo across four continents to sold-out audiences worldwide over the following 18 months.

II Reworked will be released on vinyl and CD on July 3rd, with a digital release date following on August 7th, giving fans the opportunity to hear it on their preferred physical format first. The clear vinyl variant is limited to 1000 copies worldwide.

The two friends entrusted the task to LA-based composers/producers/multiinstrumentalists Rachika Nayar and Nina Keith (AKA Disiniblud), fellow Icelandic composers Kjartan Holm and Sin Fang, and long-time friend and American composer Alex Somers. The result is a sprawling and shimmering trip back through the album’s melodies, with a dream-like haze more suited for after the dancefloor and when the lights have faded.

The entirety of II has been reworked in sequence by the artists, each bringing their own distinctive colouring to the original songs. Nayar and Keith use electronic experimentation to reshape the emotional core, unveiling and highlighting stems that lay in the background of their original forms. Holm and Fang emphasise the simple beauty of the compositions, while Somers, working with analogue studio equipment, detunes pianos and strings and slows the pieces down, allowing the songs to reach new emotional heights.

Available for the album’s 20th anniversary, Cat Power’s The Greatest on pink vinyl with a limited reprinting of the original pink foil cover.

For The Greatest, Chan Marshall returned to Memphis, pursuing the slinky Hi Records sound of the 70s, famed for its sensuous feel and beguiling rhythms. She got Al Green’s guitarist and songwriting partner Mabon “Teenie” Hodges to play guitar on the whole album (Teenie co-wrote “Love and Happiness” and “Take Me to the River,” among other soul classics). With Teenie came his Hi Rhythm bandmate (and brother) Leroy “Flick” Hodges, who plays on half of the album (Memphis Ateam bassist Dave Smith supplements). Anchoring the band is Steve Potts, whose reputation on drums was solidified when the surviving members of Booker T. and the MG’s asked him to replace their late drummer, Al Jackson. Other top Memphis musicians guest on keyboards, horns and strings. Cat Power went right to the sources, and created her own paean to the songs and styles she grew up on.

The Greatest adds to Cat Power’s singular sound all the elements that make an Al Green record great: Memphis horns, funky string arrangements, smooth background vocals. “Lived in Bars” is a hypnotic song that seems to start in the middle of the night and flow backward like water upstream to the source of a good time. Many songs hearken back to earlier in Cat Power’s career, like the surface simplicity of “Willie”—much more complicated upon deeper listen—and like “Where Is My Love,” which sounds like it could be the first song she ever wrote, and also the one to which she has always aspired. “Living Proof,” on the other hand, has an almost gospellike swing that stands in contrast to the quieter songs. The ethereal title track is the missing link between Big Star 3rd and the 21st century.

“My origin story as a songwriter and artist set the context for the catharsis I experienced while making new avatar. I wrote my very first songs in a punk house. The indie scene I was part of provided me with an outlet for genre-defying experiments that illuminated intersections I was hearing in my head. We didn’t spend tons of time on songs cuz the kids in that scene didn’t care about nailing it. Brown Spirits are a super-heavy psychedelic three-piece band who play raw energetic super-charged psych rock heavily influenced by krautrock, freejazz and deep funk music from the 1970s that gives them a truly unique and highly addictive sound. The group record and mix their own music to ¼inch analogue tape at home maintaining a strictly DIY-ethic.

Inventor of the “infinite guitar,” Canadian musician Michael Brook’s 1992 4AD record Cobalt Blue is a timeless and quietly stunning collection of instrumental pieces and shimmering dreamscapes, featuring contributions from ambient music pioneer Brian Eno, composer & multi-instrumentalist Roger Eno, and Grammy-winning producer Daniel Lanois.

Recorded later that year, Live at the Aquarium captures Brook’s rare solo performance in London, highlighting the hypnotic sustain and atmosphere that define his work. Beyond his albums, Brook has scored acclaimed films including Into the Wild, Brooklyn, and An Inconvenient Truth.

Newly remastered by Rashad Becker and presented as a 2XCD and crystal clear 2LP with artwork by Alison Fielding based on the original v23 designs, this set marks the first vinyl reissue of Cobalt Blue and the vinyl debut of Live at the Aquarium — a long-overdue celebration of an underrated gem in the 4AD catalogue.

Brook is known as a pioneer in the ambient music movement and a highly sought-after producer, especially in the arena of world music, for Peter Gabriel’s Real World Records. He has worked with a vast range of important artists, including Cheb Khaled, U. Srinivas, Mary Margaret O’Hara, and the Pogues, and toured with David Sylvian and Robert Fripp and with John Cale.

Brook was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1996 for his album with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Night Song, and for a Golden Globe in 2008 for the Into the Wild soundtrack. El Infierno won the 2011 Havana Film Festival award for best music. In 2024, Nusrat’s album Chain of Light, produced by Brook, was The Guardian’s World Music album of the year.

XMAL DEUTSCHLAND

German goth pioneers Xmal Deutschlandrevered among British audiences in the early Eighties for their ominous and transfixing presentation of danceable darkwave, sung mostly in the German language - performed live for beloved DJ John Peel’s BBC Radio 1 program four times over the span of 1982 to 1985. Emerging from Hamburg’s artpunk underground and often associated with the Neue Deutsche Welle scene, the band quickly found a devoted UK following when they signed to 4AD and extensively toured alongside label mates Cocteau Twins, Clan of Xymox, and Dead Can Dance. The 16-song anthology, newly remastered at Abbey Road Studios (2026), includes fan favourites “Incubus Succubus,” “Mondlicht,” “Geheimnis,” and “Qual”. This release features new artwork by Timothy O’Donnel and band photography by Jörg Bohm.

With her third album, composer and bandleader Jasmine Myra has stepped confidently into the next stage of her unique musical explorations. Where Light Settles is a cohesive artistic statement from a distinctive and confident voice in UK music, and a significant evolution from the critically acclaimed Horizons (2022) and Rising (2024).

Nine beautiful and powerfully grounded compositions express an accumulation of the artist’s ruminations on life, growth, and progression, powered by her vision of duality. “It’s those bittersweet moments which are heart-breaking but so important. Looking forward and trying to make sense of life,” she says. “Pain is unavoidable, and you’ll have hardship no matter what, but you don’t grow or learn about yourself or the world around you without it. The duality is the growth and coming out the other side. I had the concept from the start.”

Jasmine Myra’s verdant musical vision and talent for instrumental storytelling came to life over five days, with her long-standing ensemble gathering in one room at The Nave studios in Leeds.

Myra had crossed paths with Ancient Infinity Orchestra bandleader Ozzy Moysey before she moved from Leeds to London, often attending and playing at the same jam sessions. This made him the perfect choice to conduct the 13-piece band, freeing her up to bring maximum tenderness and elegiac tones to the alto sax lines she’d written. Her own playing sits deliberately within each track, never flying above. Instead, it wraps gently around precision melodies she wrote for strings, piano, flute, guitar, vibraphone, and harp which themselves furl and unfurl gorgeously around tenor sax, double bass, drums, and percussion. It’s a huge undertaking, executed with resolute confidence, and melodies that sparkle like sunlight on water.

As well as writing all the music, Where Light Settles is also her first selfproduced record, with Gondwana label boss Matthew Halsall undertaking Contributing Producer duties. It’s a colourful sound world, shaped in both atmosphere and structure by Myra’s affinity with music for film.

Behind the notes and staves there’s also Myra’s love of nature, specifically regular trips to North Wales, the Lake District, and the South Downs. “I just love those landscapes. It’s the duality: nature can be brutal but beautiful and I love that juxtaposition.” And of course, existing musical influences that range from Fabiano do Nascimento to Arooj Aftab and Alabaster Deplume.

“Where Light Settles is a metaphor for hope, and for me, it’s the perfect title for this album, which we recorded together, in person. It communicates the energy and the meaning behind it – and it ties in with the theme of duality.”

Last year brought success and promise, including an inspiring two-date trip to China. This summer and autumn, and the months that roll out in the distance, will be all about spreading the word. Those who know already love Jasmine Myra’s music. And soon, everyone else will too.

As Fiver, songwriter, vocalist, researcher, and guitarist Simone Schmidt continues to innovate in the Country and Folk music traditions with humour and gravity. Last heard as featured guest on the Destroyer single “Bologna”, here Fiver is joined by the Fiver Trois, balancing tight songs with sprawling improvisational passages, arranged with dynamic energy and palpable affection.

“In 2020 I consulted with a psychic who gave me a ritual for purging my apartment of stuck energy. I’d become backed up, moving from one place to the next, inheriting my dead friends' keepsakes, curb shopping, accumulating far too many cursed things from other people's pasts. I was told to put everything that previously belonged to someone else in one room, to trace a chalk circle around it all, and say the spell. I piled the contents of my life high to the ceiling, I drew the circle, and I spoke the spell. Then I put back what I wanted to keep. Whatever I didn’t want I was free to let go.

Writing this record was a similar process, albeit 5 years later, and this time the house was my head. Suddenly in 2025, I began the process of Cleaning House, and found the many moods of the past 14 years had littered my mind with some nagging melodies and unfinished phrases, some molten feelings that had hardened and deserved to be enshrined, and some wilting tunes that awaited reinvigoration by new players. Along with the return of metaphor and songwriting came my ongoing delusion that I am innovating on the progressive edge of Country Music….”

Schmidt’s been called “a Canadian PJ Harvey” by the Canadian Rolling Stone (Exclaim!). Their recordings are critically acclaimed for their warmth and rigour, and have garnered four Polaris Music Prize nominations. Their collaborators range a wide musical spectrum, from Old Time musicians Lonesome Ace String Band, to free music improvisers, to punks Fucked Up, and electronic music producer ADO (Splitter). SPEAKER MUSIC SYNOPTIC AUDIO

DeForrest Brown Jr.'s final piece as Speaker Music - is Synoptic Audio.

It's 'Theory first' music that invites the listener to think about the presentation of sound through musical systems. The album is made of live recordings of electronic improvisation, essentially a self-made palette of dense, transporting drone and hand played keyboards and drums. It’s a nexus of jazz and techno at the level of practice. It sounds like a jazz symphonic arrangement of shoegaze/post-rock via Detroit/dub techno, drawing inspiration from Black electronic music pioneer Don Lewis’ pre-MIDI ‘Live Electronic Orchestra’ controller system, and his other machines. DeForrest approximates post-MIDI electronic instrumentation with a portable, multichannel breakout box workstation composed of iPad, MacBook and mixer that tune and harmonize haptic clones of keyboards, synthesizer effects modules, and rhythm units that embodied the swing and bounce of trap and footwork hi-hats, toms, and kick-drum racks.

Before Synoptic Audio, Speaker Music releases were composed of compressed files exported directly from the DAW, which in turn, excluded much of the spatial acoustic qualities that occur in the live sonic environment. Studio residencies at EMPAC (Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY and Libby Leshgold Gallery at Emily Carr University of Art + Design, in Vancouver, BC during the early winter months of 2025 allowed space for DeForrest to experiment with ambisonic motion capture technology to consolidate and exfoliate the latency and compression between the live and studio moment.

DeForrest calls this "semiocoustic reason"—using rhythm, resonance, and vibration as a way of thinking and perceiving the world. The project is informed by Brown’s ongoing research into a diagnostic framework that draws on Henri Lefebvre’s theory of rhythmanalysis, where everyday life is analysed through rhythmic perception - e.g. the train to work or the patter of the desktop keyboard, alongside Norman Kelly’s analysis of Black political economy in music, which Kelly described as 'Structures of Stealing', such as Techno in Detroit, where music is used as "raw material" for corporate profit, while the actual Black creators are left without ownership or wealth. Sound as organising structure in our lives. Synoptic Audio is an experiment in the studio-asinstrument logic of Miles Davis’s electric period, where post production editing and spatial manipulation are a crucial part of the music.

The initial playback and re-editing took place in EMPAC’s Studio 1—Goodman, where the material was spatialized using IRCAM Panoramix and recorded binaurally through a Neumann KU 100 dummy head microphone, (literally a mannequin with mics as ears) to record sound exactly how human ears hear it in 3D space. Then these recordings were taken to Libby Leshgold Gallery, where they were edited and re-recorded through a four-speaker Genelec array into a 360-degree ambisonic microphone to capture how the room’s walls and ceiling change the sound, making the effects of the room part of the recording process. Throughout this iterative process, spatialization is treated as an analytic tool to expose how sound behaves when it’s not being optimized for efficiency, commerce and format. Rather than resolving into definitive compositions, Synoptic Audio remains open to reconfiguration. Capturing how sound moves through space and hits a human body. These processes are a way to keep changing the music, rather than just documenting it, keeping it open and alive.
