How did you personally get started in the music industry?

I’m primarily a blues harmonica player, though I play other instruments rather badly, and I have been playing in bands since I was YOUNG, which is about 50 years ago. That led to me dabbling with multi-track recording, and then…

When and where did the label begin?

Well, the label followed on the heels of my previous label, ToneCool, which I ran from 1985-2005. That started with my own band, then some great Boston-based blues artists, one of which happened to be Susan Tedeschi. Susan changed everything by being an amazing artist, getting nominated for a Best New Artist Grammy, and having a certified Gold Record. We did two records with her, signed the North Mississippi Allstars, and did about 50 very cool records until things took a dive and we wound up selling out in 2005. Round about then I got a call from an old friend, blues legend and former Muddy Waters guitarist Bob Margolin, who said he was thinking of starting a label with Blues magazine publisher Chip Eagle, and asked if I wanted to get involved. I told him if he wanted to start a label, sign artists, produce their records and lose a lot of money, I knew exactly how to do that! But maybe we should try something different, work with artists who would produce and own their own records, and do some profit-sharing. That seems to have worked. Chip Eagle passed away, and we brought Amy Brat into the company, and here we are, so I guess that’s the beginning.

Is the label tied to a specific geographical area?

NO - I”m in Boston, my partner Bob Margolin is in North Carolina, Amy is in Chicago, and we have artists from around the world. The only place we all usually get together is Memphis, for Blues Foundation events the Blues Music Awards and International Blues Challenge weeks, so that’s always been a hub for us. We have won dozens of Blues Music Awards, and of course have probably had more than a hundred nominations, and we always have great showcase events on Beale Street.

If you had to start a new sub-label, what would it be called and what kind of music would it be geared towards?

HA. Given the state of today’s music business… I think it would be geared towards another line of work!

What was the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic, and is it still a challenge?

Well, one thing, my band (who started it all in 1985) started doing remote recording and videos. We changed the name from 11th Hour Band to the 11 Guys Quartet with our 2020 album, and have been recording remotely ever since. Our latest single stayed on the Sirius/ XM Bluesville top 15 chart for FOURTEEN WEEKS!

How has the label changed since it started?

Well, after original partner Chip Eagle passed away, and almost immediately after we met her, we added Amy Brat as a partner. She works with me on ALL aspects of the label, and is a publicity/marketing genius. That helps. And of course now we are much more geared towards the digital marketplace, and do many more single releases.

Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix?

We began as a BLUES label, but have many artists who are in the grey areas between Blues and America, Rock, Folk, etc.

How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label?

Just trying to do our best and achieve success for our artists.

How would you describe the average fan of the label?

Anyone with extremely good taste! But yeah, primarily blues fans.

Where do you go to search for new music? Who or what has been a new find (on the label or otherwise) you’d like to rave about?

We signed the past two winners of the Blues Foundation’s INTERNATIONAL BLUES CHALLENGE, Dylan Triplett and Mathias Lattin, and they are both AMAZING!

We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why?

You are correct, I can’t choose.

How do you feel about the rising costs of vinyl records? And what about the continued popularity of the CD format?

Vinyl has never been a big part of our label, not as strong in the blues marketplace as other genres. I think many blues fans (and blues DJs) will continue to want CDs, because a lot of us like our collections and can’t figure that digital stuff out.

What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now?

Well, we used to sell more CDs. And yes, most of our income comes from the digital world. Go figure.

In the late 1960s, the coastal city of Paramonga in Peru gave rise to a vibrant music scene shaped by surf, rockabilly, and tropical sounds. Among its protagonists were the band Los Orientales de Paramonga, who with their psychedelic guitars, Fender ampliﬁers, and wah-wah pedals, would deﬁne not only their own sound but also shape the musical identity of the region.

With a few remarkable percussionists on the lineup, they reached the very top of the Peruvian charts, catapulting the band to national fame and spreading their electrifying cumbia throughout the country. After a split due to internal tensions, Víctor Ramírez took the lead under the direction of Argentine producer Enrique Lynch and blended cumbia with guaracha, salsa, and guaguancó, aiming to rival top tropical acts of the era.

Expanding their audience through relentless touring, the band got known for their electrifying live performances — often playing multiple venues in a single night.

The selection of 25 songs featured on this compilation, all recorded between 1972 and 1976, offer a complete journey through the sound and spirit of Los Orientales de Paramonga at their peak, who helped shape modern cumbia while never forgetting their roots.

Strut Records presents a brand new reissue of the 1975 Brian Auger’s Oblivion Express original album Reinforcements

A gem from the later years of the Oblivion Express band, Reinforcements sees Auger evolve from his early ‘70s jazz-rock fusions towards smoother jazz funk sophistication, continuing his journey from the previous year’s Straight Ahead. With two former Oblivion Express drummers joining Average White Band, there are obvious comparisons to draw as several tracks lean into groove-driven arrangements and polished mid-’70s production

Never one to follow a predictable path, Auger crafts a steadfast, stylish album that captures the evolving sound of the era, offering a rich snapshot of mid-’70s British soul and jazz-funk A fan favourite, the album also marks the return of vocalist Alex Ligertwood (later of Santana), whose soulful delivery is a highlight of many Oblivion Express recordings He is joined by Jack Mills (guitar), Lennox Langton (percussion), Dave Dowle (drums), and new addition Clive Chaman (bass, flute) –a family affair with their various kids joining for the cover shoot, the full cast adorned in an array of fine mid-‘70s tank tops.

Album highlights include the heavy funk instrumental jam ‘Brain Damage, ’ a dynamic, keyboard-driven showcase of Auger’s virtuosity alongside the burning latin jazz workout ‘Something Out of Nothing’ and soaring closer ‘Future Pilot’ taking us from our present day troubles to “thread the skies to a new location ” ‘Big Yin’ is a heartfelt tribute to former drummer Robbie McIntosh following his untimely death As with all Auger albums, the energy is nothing but positive and soulful – his back cover quote states “May the love you bring to this world be reflected upon you ”

Strut presents the second studio album from Brian Auger’s Oblivion Express and a firm favourite with Auger aficionados, the “little known masterpiece” A Better Land from 1971

Marking a clear evolution from their more jazz-rock leaning debut, the band shifts into a mellower direction on these tracks, echoing the feel of Befour released in the Trinity's later years A Better Land embraces warmer, more melodic and understated compositions, primarily written by guitarist Jim Mullen. With its languid and spacious approach, the album brings an grounded message to make the most of the simple pleasures in life with a hopeful, but wary, eye to the future. Musically, Auger brings acoustic guitars, country rock melodies and three-part vocal harmonies into his musical palette. Key tracks include the groove-driven title track ‘A Better Land’ , the sparse ‘Dawn of Another Day, ’ (sampled by Air and Black Milk among others) while ‘Fill Your Head With Laughter’ returns to Auger's trademark driving Hammond-led sound, akin to early Traffic

The record features the Brian Auger’s unique sound on organ and electric piano, joined by Jim Mullen on guitar, Barry Dean on bass and Robbie McIntosh on drums and percussion, with Auger, Mullen and Dean all contributing vocals. Mullen co-wrote seven of the album’s nine tracks, with additional contributions from Alan Gorrie (later of Average White Band). These songwriters should take immense pride in their work as Auger’s favourite singer of all time, Sarah Vaughan, recognised the quality of these compositions by covering three of them; ‘Trouble’, ‘On “Thinking It Over’, and ‘Tomorrow City’ for her 1972 album A Time in My Life

GÖRL's first album, “Dark Silver Moon Light,” will be released on May 29, 2026. Behind GÖRL are two pioneers of electronic music: DAF legend Robert Görl and influential DJ and producer Sylvie Marks. Robert Görl founded the legendary post-punk group Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft (DAF) in 1978. With radically reduced, iconic sequences, brutalistic drums, and provocative aesthetics, DAF achieved timeless hits such as “Der Mussolini.” Sylvie Marks, on the other hand, was the first and only female resident DJ at the legendary Frankfurt club Dorian Gray. She later released international club hits as a producer and performed at festivals such as Roskilde. For six years, Robert Görl and Sylvie Marks have been engaged in a sparkling creative partnership that culminated in the release of their first joint album as GÖRL, “Dark Silver Moon Light.” The album reflects on the aesthetic tradition of DAF while transcending it into the present and future.

Soft Palms have never been interested in making music that sits quietly in the background. As they prepare to release their forthcoming album “IN ECHO”, the Long Beach duo sound restless, alert, and wired into the moment. This is not a victory lap or a nostalgia exercise. It feels more like a pressure valve about to burst.

“IN ECHO” is taking shape as a response to the last five years of collective overload. Rather than framing the record as a rigid concept album, Soft Palms approach it as something more instinctual. A collection of songs written in reaction to media saturation, emotional burnout, fractured relationships, and the constant hum of fight-or-flight living. The result feels immediate and unfiltered, like catching a transmission mid-broadcast.

There is a noticeable shift in their sound. Still rooted in dream-pop atmospheres and analog warmth, Soft Palms lean harder into grit and abrasion this time around. They describe it as ‘low-key punk’. Not loud for the sake of volume, but defiant in restraint. Grunge textures creep into the edges, guitars feel worn and lived-in, and the production leaves space for tension to breathe rather than smoothing it away.

Soft Palms continue to operate from their home studio, Centre of Mental Arts, recording, producing, and mixing everything themselves. That independence remains central to their identity. It also extends beyond the band. Kugel and Montoya are the founders of Happy Sundays Fest, a Long Beach-based, free music festival rooted in DIY ethics and community connection, a philosophy that quietly informs their music as much as their output.

As “IN ECHO” edges closer to release, Soft Palms stand on the brink of their most fully realized statement yet. It promises a record that does not offer easy answers, but instead sits with discomfort, repetition, and emotional noise until truth breaks through. This is music for those paying attention, for listeners willing to sit in the static and hear themselves reflected back.

Micah Thomas Lucid

Pianist and composer Micah Thomas has been a member of the New York jazz and improvising scenes since moving to the city in 2015. He has been touring locally and internationally in Immanuel Wilkins’ quartet and in his own trio since 2017, and has worked with many other artists such as Ambrose Akinmusire, Joshua Redman, Walter Smith III, Tyshawn Sorey, and Sidra Bell. He has released four albums as a leader and has appeared as a sideman on many others. Aaron Parks says that Micah’s playing “has a restlessly inventive and futuristic tilt while simultaneously remaining deeply rooted in the history of the music - all delivered with curiosity, patience, humor and care,” while Fred Hersch tagged him as “one who has a unique style as well as all the tools needed to make a major contribution to the world of jazz piano.”

Micah’s ﬁfth album Lucid is, in large part, a pursuit of the feeling of balance. The phrases in his playing and writing here are dynamic in motion yet concise — not too long in any direction, just hanging in space perfectly. This album is also an exploration of the feeling of ecosystem and habitat - the idea that things are happening that seem independent and maybe even random, but that also give life to the things that are happening around them and form a uniﬁed picture despite the complete autonomy of all the parts.

Each phrase from alto saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins seems to have a different personality, following its own totally coherent yet hidden logic. Trombonist Kalia Vandever’s lines seem to go around corners just in time and knot and unknot themselves, singing through different parts of the range of their instrument across the album. Bassist Thomas Morgan’s unflagging bravery and compositionally masterful use of silence shine through in this music. Drummer Lesley Mok becomes an anchor for the music, bending and flowing and coming in and out to create an added dimension to offset the starkness of the other musicians. In a way, whereas in much music the percussive instruments are associated with the feeling of “solidity” while the harmonic instruments create the feeling of “liquidity” as they flow and float around the static percussion, here it feels like Lesley often provides the liquidity that balances and embraces the solidity and jaggedness of the rest of the band. Micah reflects, “Everyone in this band has an acute awareness of where they are and where everyone else is, and the agility to go wherever they need to go when they need to. The seeming surface independence of the band belies a tight interconnectivity.”

Alex Zhang Hungtai’s new double album Orion/Mother, a brave, gigantic burst of life, creativity, and abstract balladry, alchemizes the past and the present, sampling home recordings he made with some of New York’s finest improvisers while spontaneously composing on top of them with trumpet and other instruments. Zhang’s trumpet is the “grounding force” and conceptual narrator of Orion/Mother, allowing Zhang to decontextualize, process, and reconcile with the past through abstract lyricism in the present. It’s the sound of an artist addressing unresolved fragments from his past, integrating them into the present, and building a new path.

Rokk i Reykjavik is a documentary directed by Fridrik Por Fridrikkson during the Icelandic winter of 1981-1982 and released for local television in 1982 shown in local theaters. The film is considered one of the most important documentaries ever made about Icelandic music culture. It includes several bands who would go on to influence the music scene, such as Tappi Tíkarrass, a punk/pop band led by vocalist Björk Guðmundsdóttir (a teenager at the time!) performing two of their works: “Hrollur” and “Dúkkulísur”. The new wave band Þeyr, today considered one of the legendary Iceland bands of the early 1980s, is also featured with their songs “Rúdolf” and “Killer Boogie”, as is Einar Örn Benediktsson’s punk group Purrkur Pillnikk, also with two tracks: “Ovænt” and “Gluggagægir”.

Coinciding with the band’s 40th anniversary, Complete B Sides: 1988-97 by Pixies has been remastered and is being reissued 25 years after it’s initial release on cd. The album will be pressed on double black vinyl, double clear vinyl and double cd. This will also mark the first time the release is pressed on vinyl.

Collecting all the b-sides from the band’s classic 4AD-era, Complete B Sides contains some of the Pixies best “other” tracks including “Wave of Mutilation (UK Surf)”, “Into The White” and “The Thing”.

Originally released on CD in 2001, when the band were nearly a decade into a hiatus, Complete B Sides: 1988-97 featured all 19 non-single tracks from the band’s unbelievable run of 1988-1991 singles. To complete it, it concluded with the instrumental version of “Letter to Memphis”, which previously only appeared on the US version of the release of the Alec Eiffel maxi-single.

And as there is space for more music across four sides of vinyl, this updated version sees six live tracks added, culled from latter Pixies releases including 1997’s Debaser re-release.

For this updated edition, all the tracks have been remastered from their original analogue tapes by Kevin Vanbergen, sounding amazingly fresh, it also completes his extensive work across the band’s catalogue.

This new vinyl edition works as a companion piece to the band’s recent Live at the BBC compilation where designer Chris Bigg (v23) has created striking new art, taking photos from Simon Larbalestier’s archive that were originally slated for use by the Pixies but later shelved. Both long-term collaborators with the band, they worked on both releases in tandem to remember and honour the band’s late-visual director, Vaughan Oliver.

“I guess you could call it a lost album,” says Rodney Crowell. “I stumbled upon it in my vault at home. I’d forgotten about it completely.” He’s referring to Then Again, which he recorded and shelved two decades ago before moving off into new directions. Since then, the album has been biding its time, waiting for the moment when its songs would hit hardest. And they hit incredibly hard now, largely because age and experience have granted Crowell a richer perspective. “I’m glad I put it on the shelf, because now is the time for it. It may not be the time for it for the rest of the world, but it’s time for it for me. That’s why I wanted to call it Then Again. I thought that was a clever way of saying that what was happening then is happening now.

Back in 2006, Crowell was in high cotton. He was coming off a trilogy of albums—The Houston Kid in 2001, Fate’s Right Hand in 2003, The Outsider in 2005—that re-established him as a fearless voice in Americana and attracted new generations of fans drawn to his compassionate storytelling, his detail-laden songwriting, and his eloquent outrage over political injustices. In 2005 he went into Treasure Isle Studios in Nashville to record what would become Then Again. But when he heard the masters, something didn’t feel quite right. The band was smokin’ hot and the songs sounded good, but the album just didn’t move him and he struggled to figure out exactly what was wrong or what was missing. Twenty years later, when he found the album in his vaults, he couldn’t remember exactly what tripped him up. He decided it was finally time, if only because “I heard a record I wasn’t sick of. I was no longer sick of myself. That’s what 20 years will do for you.”

Once lost and now found, Then Again is something the Rodney Crowell of the 2000s could never have predicted but something the Rodney Crowell of the 2020s recognizes instinctively: a work of nuance, insight, and sensitivity that considers death but celebrates life. “I’m trying to understand that this spirit of mine is going to leave this body and go off somewhere else. I’ve got a pretty good idea that it’s going to be someplace good, but I still need to perfect some part of my spiritual journey here before I check out. I can see that in these songs now.”

Sixteen killer 70s reggae funk and soul cuts from the likes of John Holt, Lee Perry, Cornel Campbell, The Cimarons, The Chosen Few and more featuring superb reggae takes on songs by artists including The Jackson 5, William DeVaughn, Diana Ross and The Supremes, War, The Temptations, Roberta Flack, The Stylistics and others!

Well-documented is the influence of American black music on Jamaican styles of the 1960s – from the birth of ska music, when The Skatalites ska-ified the jump-up southern USA rhythm and blues music of Rosco Gordon, Louis Jordan and Fats Domino, through to the creation of rocksteady when Jamaican artists like The Techniques, The Paragons, Alton Ellis and The Melodians turned to the slower rhythms and soulful harmonies of groups such as The Impressions and The Drifters for inspiration.

Less-well established is that in the 1970s Jamaicans didn’t (shock!) stop listening to American black music styles, with many 70s reggae artists as invested in soul, funk and the proto-disco sounds of Philadelphia, as was the case with rhythm and blues in the previous decade. In the 1970s, while Jamaica promoted its own roots reggae styles around the world, powerhouse USA soul labels such as Motown, Philadelphia International and Stax Records were at the same time all popular on the island.

This interaction between American and Jamaican music was not limited to Jamaica. In Britain, first-generation Caribbean-émigré children in the 1960s and early 70s grew up with an equal love of both soul and reggae, which manifested itself in the home-grown arrival of lovers rock in the mid-1970s.

Soul Jazz Records’ new ‘Reggae Island Soul’ tells this story of how soul and funk-infused reggae in the 1970s united the sounds of Jamaica, USA and the UK into a highly addictive cultural hybrid of styles.

Studio One Funk is made up of rare and unreleased Reggae Funk from the vaults of Studio One.Ever since the birth of Funk in America, the sound has been an ever-present ingredient in the melting pot of Studio One’s musical output.

The music here is a combination of originals and USA soul and funk covers. Jackie Mittoo shows his appreciation for Booker T and The MGs, the studio group at Memphis’ famous Stax Records with a previously unreleased version of ‘Hang Em High’. Booker T’s super-funky ‘Melting Pot’ is also covered by the little-known Underground Vegetables.

Other covers include Isaac Hayes’ classic ‘Shaft’ by Cedric Brooks - another unreleased gem, straight from the master tapes. Motown gets a look in with Alton’s stripped-down version of the Spinners classic ‘It’s A Shame’, written by Stevie Wonder and Syreeta. James Brown is checked with the JBsinspired rare groove of Lee Arab’s ‘Now’. Lloyd Williams similarly does a fine Kingston-style version of the hardest working man in showbusiness on ‘Reggae Feet’.

Version-wise, we have ‘Idleberg’, Cedric Brooks tough instrumental cut to Horace Andy’s seminal ‘Skylarking’. Pablove Black’s cut of Sidewalk Doctor (A/K/A Poco Tempo) is one of a handful of Studio One releases featuring Augustus Pablo’s trademark instrument, the melodica, played by Black himself.

Add to these original cuts from Studio One’s heavyweight session players including Leroy Sibbles, Jackie Mittoo, Leroy Sibbles, Eric Frater, Richard Ace, Vin Gordon and more and you have one of the finest selections of reggae and funk you will ever hear.

Promises is an extraordinary, collaborative album by the electronic giant Floating Points and saxophone titan Pharoah Sanders. The album features the London Symphony Orchestra and cover art by the acclaimed American artist, Julie Mehretu.

The album is composed and engineered by Sam Shepherd aka Floating Points, who’s second album Crush earned Best New Music from Pitchfork and a major feature in the New York Times, and placed him on several 2019 critics lists. His debut album Elaenia, released by Luaka Bop, was another Best New Music pick and hailed as one of the best debuts of the decade. It is also the release that made Pharoah Sanders want to work with him in the first place. SML is a Los Angeles based quintet featuring Anna Butterss, Jeremiah Chiu, Josh Johnson, Booker Stardrum, and Gregory Uhlmann

Spontaneous Music Live contains two side-length pieces of unedited improvisation, recorded live at Los Angeles venue Zebulon during SML's December 2025 three-night residency, just weeks after the release of the band's second album HOW YOU BEEN. It was recorded and mixed live to stereo tape by Bryce Gonzales (the same engineer/wizard known for his gorgeous live captures/mixes of Jeﬀ Parker's ETA IVtet).

Between HOW YOU BEEN and their 2024 debut SMALL MEDIUM LARGE (both of which were heavily edited, shaped and post-produced) the band has developed a reputation for records that are heavily fused, polished, and punchy. The medium is on full post-modern display on those LPs, and the band’s postproduction knife can be responsible for much of the perspective—the tastiest morsels collected, arranged, and rearranged just so.

But the source material from both those albums were live recordings. Longform, unwieldy, ebbing and ﬂowing. On top of that, every performance the band has ever done has been fully improvised in that spirit. So in the sphere of live performance the band’s esteem has grown down a diﬀerent path—one of linear, hypnotic, expansion. It’s a perceived split persona shared by some of SML’s most inspiring conceptual bedfellows: compare the extended madness of Can’s Live in Paris 1973 to the relative tight form of Future Days from the same year; the speed-funk chaos of Miles Davis’ Dark Magus to the heavily deconstructed On The Corner or Big Fun.

Spontaneous Music Live removes the curatorial perspective and pulls the curtain back on that search-pluck-reconstruct editing process. What we’re left with is the psychedelic realism of the band in situ, in their home town, collectively improvising, fully in-the-moment, mining for that moment of discovery.We hear, in macro, each nugget of sound which could be the basis for a future SML album track, spattered amongst the collective chaos-and-control like stars in the night sky.

Strut Records proudly presents a new reissue of the original Afrobeat classic Low Profile (Not For The Blacks), recorded and composed by Afrika 70 saxophonist and bandleader Lekan Animashaun and produced by Fela Kuti

After years touring the world as Fela’s baritone saxophonist, Animashaun stepped forward to lead the legendary Egypt 80 band following Tony Allen’s departure, remaining the group’s musical director until Fela’s death in 1997 He continued on subsequent tours with Seun Kuti until 2016 Lekan began recording his only solo project, Low Profile, in 1977 The album was composed and recorded across sessions at home in Nigeria and on tour with Fela, who both produced the recordings and added keyboards to the album’s title track

‘Low Profile (Not For The Blacks)’ referenced a government campaign during the country’s 1970s oil boom: “It was inspired by a speech by Olusegun Obasanjo, Nigeria’s military Head of State, when he urged black people to keep a low profile about their wealth and not to behave in a vulgar, arrogant way,” explains Lekan “I argued that low profile is not just for the blacks, as everyone is human, regardless of race ” On the flip side, the simmering Afrobeat anthem ‘Se Rere’ (which translates as ‘Do Right’) delivers Animashaun’s message of living with integrity: do right, and you will reap what you sow. The song later became the band’s opening number during Fela’s live performances both in Nigeria and internationally throughout the 1980s and ’90s.

Despite recording beginning almost two decades earlier, Low Profile did not receive an official release until 1995, when it finally surfaced on Fela’s Kalakuta label. One of only a handful of albums led by core members of Kuti’s band, Low Profile captures a pivotal moment in Afrobeat history. Over time, the original has become a rare and highly sought-after record, and this new reissue places the spotlight back on a modest but influential Nigerian legend

The long-awaited reissue of Rifferama, the acclaimed debut album by Glasgow indie trailblazers Thrum. Out on Fire Records, the remaster revisits one of the most revered cult records of the 1990s UK guitar scene. The release includes an exclusive download of the band’s reunion show recorded live at Airdrie Town Hall in 2025, along with a new studio version of ‘Hey Joe’.

Originally released to critical acclaim, Rifferama captured a moment when melody, distortion and emotional urgency collided to create something timeless. Now newly remastered from the original recordings, the album returns with enhanced depth and clarity, reaffirming its reputation as a lost classic of the era.

Fronted by the unmistakable voice of Monica Queen (known for her work with Belle and Sebastian and Snow Patrol), Thrum’s sound blended shimmering pop hooks with driving, fuzz-laden riffs. Alongside Johnny Smillie’s distinctive guitar work, the band forged a sonic identity that stood proudly alongside the era’s most influential alternative acts.

This reissue is dedicated to the late great Phil Vinall, who mixed the album.

A few years ago, Jenn Wasner seemed to be forever asking her partner, Alan Good Parker, who was singing that song on their Los Angeles stereo The answer was almost always the same: another demo from Jacob Ungerleider, an unassuming pianist from Virginia that Parker had met when they both toured with Natalie Prass and who had recently moved west Wasner wanted in She ﬁrst told Ungerleider she wanted to hear his demos, too, that she needed these sad, sweet, stark pop songs in her life And then she took the next step Though Ungerleider was making a career as a sideman, seemingly touring and recording in multiple bands at every given moment, the Flock of Dimes and Wye Oak singer thought he should step out as a songwriter, to offer these tunes to people beyond their text chain She vowed to help

The result is Congratulations, a beautiful and bittersweet set of 12 songs that will crack your heart and your humor, that will blur the boundary between a smile and a frown, that will introduce you to a new bedroom pop auteur who wears a heart on his sleeve that might look a lot like yours Though Ungerleider has released songs of his own before, both under his own name and to acclaim as Grebes, Wasner rightfully believed that he’d simply sit on these tunes as he went about his sideman business She sorted through old demos and new numbers, arranging and compiling and producing, and even started her own label, 2 Heads, to release Congratulations That’s because to hear these songs is to be smitten with them, even as they hold up a mirror to our most engrained insecurities.

Ungerleider grew up in rural Vermont, in a house where instruments dotted the house but in a place where there was no scene to speak of He played at home all the time, often feigning sickness so he could stay home and record by himself Elliott Smith’s early albums were an instructive gift, showing him that powerful music could be made with simple tools and settings He has been a songwriter, then, since childhood, but seeking any sort of spotlight through performance was never a priority After college, becoming an itinerant sideman felt comfortable, because he could separate himself from the crowd with his keyboards, content with a

background microphone rather than the one standing at center stage Still, he continued to write, his songs serving not simply as vessels for his feelings but as private crucibles for processing them, too

That is the territory that Congratulations so expertly explores self-doubt and personal judgement, underscored with modest grace and wry wit “Congratulations” imagines love as a zero-sum game that he will never have the wherewithal to win; it ends with him waving the white flag of defeat, a punchline that is also a knockout On “Spirit,” he evokes that budget airline to explore all the ways he feels insufficient, to wish for a relationship he knows will forever remain out of reach “I Wanna Be Fine” is a luminous wishlist of all the things he aspires to be charming, charismatic, fashionable, convincing, useful, fine He sings the song, though, from some other plane, where all those things remain as far away as clouds are to the earthbound It is sweet, devastating, and relatable to anyone who has ever felt like not enough, which is, of course, almost all of us

‘We Are Not The Headliner’ is the debut album from Omar Sosa’s Bay Area-based Latin-World-Jazz ensemble, Quarteto Americanos, featuring multi-reed and ﬂute master Sheldon Brown, deeply versatile drummer Josh Jones, and heavy-weight Cuban baby bass player Ernesto Mazar Kindelán . Since their formation in 2013, Swedish progressive rock band Agusa has carved out a distinct name for themselves in the world of retro prog, Scandinavian folk rock and Krautrock. There have been quite a few changes for the Norwegian jazz rock band Red Kite. As the band explains: What can we say? It's been a weird time. A lot has happened, and none of it good!

First of all, we had to postpone things for a while, as Bernt André Moen was going through some health issues that eventually led him to stepping down permanently. So that sucked. But there were deaths along the way too. We lost friends, a cat, a swan - even Ozzy and Ace!

It all began after Even's dad had been hospitalized and had several brushes with death. Around the same time, his friend's cat, Bolla, disappeared. They would later only find it's leg. That was the backdrop as he went off to write some new music for the album. The sounds that were coming out though, were somber and slow.

It’s a bleak backstory, but there have been some positives. Old friend and saxophonist Gisle Johansen, who was originally only going to guest on the album, is now in the band. And luckily for us, another friend, Ståle Storløkken, was able to help out on short notice with the keyboards. So terrible times were had by all, but also a few laughs. Today’s line-up of Red Kite consists of Even Hermansen – guitars, Trond Frønes – bass, Torstein Lofthus – drums and Gisle Johansen – saxophone.

Melanie Radford is an American bassist, vocalist, and songwriter. Her music is propelled by melodic bass lines, musical minimalism, poetic lyricism, and a powerful, haunting voice, which is the twin and complement to her bass. In her songs you can hear the genre influences of her Northwestern home (early years in Boise, ID; current home in Seattle, WA)— desert rock, art folk, drone— her classical training, and her years of touring with Boise bands Built to Spill and Blood Lemon. But what defines her music is the emotional presence she brings to each song.

For the Sake of Stillness, her debut solo album, is an offering of music that asks you to pay attention. Most of the songs are at a walking pace, mimicking the long walks through foreign cities and the observant headspace they come from. Stillness was recorded during and in-between touring, coming together over years as a centering practice and statement of self. An ambient score of natural sounds from these wanderings flows under many of the songs, records of place: the rhythm of footsteps on crisp ground, birdsong, rain falling outside, an impatient car shouldering into distant traffic, the pulse of the ocean, the warm texture of unintelligible and overlapping conversations. These pocket recordings interweaving with the music give an added impression of closeness. We hear the place in the music, and the music is a window into what was felt there. Like an invitation into a daydream, a view into someone's private world.

The music is quiet, dreamy, steady and self-assured. There's a rhythmic heartbeat and little flares of exuberance: touches of magic and awe everywhere. On Stash, the absolutely energy-drenched 2nd album from BCMC, the guitar and keys duo soars through waves of pleasant rhythmic turbulence on the way to show us just what they got.

Needle down: increased activity dubs and baubles the sonic surface of BCMC’s Stash planet. Waves from Arabian, Indian, Flamenco and Soul groove in alliance under the expanse of an all-world flag, representing a borderless pursuit of cosmic music moments in the hand, of/by/for all the people of folk, rock and jazz, psych, west coast psych, prog, DIY, experimental, traditional, programmatic, impressionistic, liturgic, electric...!

Maybe it’s in the DNA between Cooper Crain on organ & synth and Bill MacKay on guitar? BCMC’s groove-based understanding/space-based alignment of purpose is two-headed (four-handed) intuition in music, aurally forming whenever playing, composing, improvising, or all the above. Stash is part guitar and keyboard recital, part unbridled electroacoustic assembly of spontaneous international deep and wide sounds. Happening between them, somehow. Like the time: guitar and keyboard pushing, then pulling back in space. The sound of two people agreeing on this. Patterns emerge, units form, and then, we feel BCMC alive in the wide-open air of the room.

Also in Stash: written things, shorter strands, riffs, prog/funk/church organ breaks, psychedelic blues-rock soloing on synth. Echoes of Floyd/Doors/Deep Purple/ Iron Butterfly/ Velvets/Can wove into a jangly nest, then trembled with an occasional British folk peregrination. Insistent chord/rhythm discovery: jam it out. Having taped, take a second pass in places. Improvisation, layers, inner-player dialogues revolve the flow, open it up.

Drop the needle down into Stash anywhere. You find one sonic widescreen or another in time. Vivid, judiciously-tripped minimalist songs; tropical soundtrack capacity and time, horizons and water flown in from the border, fine frontier and mellow high.

Stash was recorded on half-inch 8-track tape by Greg Norman at Electrical Audio, then recorded more and mixed to half-track 2-inch at Sweat Loge by Cooper and Bill Stash’s different textural feel is down to wondering about, then dialing details in the sound, getting good signal in a few good spaces with a few new (old) machines in the chain. And in the mix, not a digital module was stirring: Stash is straight AAA, student!

Songs Album II is LA musician Aaron MF Olson’s Country Thyme Records debut, his second ‘songs for singing’ album in just over a decade of releasing music. Aaron’s a sweet fellow. He can be salty on occasion, but it’s put to good use here. His songs mix satiric, confessional and experimental lyric modes and his music’s cut from a fine cloth of head-informed, classically sweet and soft pop/rock modes. Most of all, Songs Album II is music for listening.

To listen to and to play music; that's been his highest aim, for most of his life. His high school band was a post-rock group that morphed into a surf music outfit; he’s been similarly guided by such polarities ‘n congruities in the time since. He’s released four albums of “Baywatch Krautrock” with LA Takedown, and played and recorded in many other projects, including but not limited to his experimental Music Tracing Ensemble, exotica collective Other Delights, Bedouine, Coffin Prick, Papa M, Tommy Peltier, Vetiver and “L.A.’s Most grateful Dead cover band,” Richard Pictures. Aaron’s solo credits include 2020’s switched-on essay, Ranchera '22 {Synthesizer Interpretations of the Songs of José Alfredo Jiménez} and the 2022 New Age release, For Dorothy. He does film/ television composition too; most recently, the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack for Matt Hewitt’s indie horror film, Hoagie. Life’s not cheap, and so far as hard work goes, making music is fun.

If all this implies a wide palette of input/output, Songs Album II has it in reserve, framed scrupulously in a sequence of nice, light folk/rock ditties, their spacey-yet-precise arrangements colorfully blowing up the songs’ personal values: by definition, perfect listening! It’s Aaron, on most acoustic and electric guitars and basses, keyboards, harmonica, synth & vocals, Robin MacMillian on drums, Tara Milch, flute; Michael Sachs, clarinets; Luke Csehak, bassoon & trumpet; additional guitars & vocals from Blue Broderick, Bart Davenport and Wayne Faler; keyboards & vocals from Andrew Dorsett and vocals by Matt Popieluch, making Songs Album II a collection of widescreen, hi-def songs and sounds.

Aaron’s voice is light-toned, gentle and tunefully raspy, falling somewhere between Jack Nitzsche, Van Dyke Parks, Robert Wyatt, and personal inspirations John Simon, Stephen Pastel, Jim O’Rourke and Kermit ’s nephew, Robin. And Emmett Otter! Not a bad bunch to be sharing the water with. He came late to singing; 2021’s Songs Album was literally provoked into being. He’d was down with COVID, a lifeless, cold week, sweating it out… and immediately afterwards, he finished several already-conceived songs, wrote the rest, got it all done in weeks a post-fever fervor! Without trying to, Aaron came around to Songs Album II in the EXACT same way, after another bout of demon COVID. He’s a singer/songwriter who’s been known to dream musical passages, with a couple on this record in delightful proof welcoming the hand of the mystic upon him.

The “no particular theme” implied by the title is only part so. It’s no concept album, unless the concept is “album, of songs,” but there ARE themes to be found here, feels and emotions crystalized around this lifetime of listening. With moments of sound laced into song, functioning both as toe-tapping sweet melodies and near-Joycean full-function index of personal reference, Aaron MF Olson’s Songs Album II is music meant for listening to in the spirit of listening, and higher calling. And singing along!

dgoHn (pronounced “John") is the moniker of John Cunnane, who hails from somewhere between London and Essex.

‘Tessares,’ his fourth album but his ﬁrst for Planet Mu, is playful, unconventional drum & bass that contrasts sparse effects and melodic elements with complex drumfunk and breakcore. He often uses unusual time signatures and head-spinning polyrhythms inspired by jazz and math rock, sometimes within the same track. Somehow he makes it sound effortless, and occasionally pretty as well, keeping a ﬁne balance that never feels punishing; exploratory without getting lost.

He's built a name for himself over the last two decades performing live at festivals and events around the world, while collaborating with fellow artists such as Macc, Nic TVG, Jodey Kendrick and Badun as well as solo releases.

The album opens with ‘Waiting For’ which combines complex breaks with melodic ﬁlls, spacey effects and dubbed out vocals that feel like snatches of lost conversations - a combination he uses throughout the album giving it an eerie touch of humanity. Lead single ‘I Couldn't Remember So I Made Something Up’ is in 15/8 time. It feels like a conventional melodic drum & bass track, but the time signature disrupts the listeners’ expectations, while the detuned melody eases its sense of dislocation. ’Whistling On A Tuesday’ opens with a light echoey piano countdown into bass stabs which introduce heavy whirling amen breakbeats that switch between 180 and 120 bpm. ’Holly Can Swim But She Doesn’t Really Like It’ is the most rhythmically challenging track here. It feels hard to hang on to as its knotty breaks play out over bell chimes, like something Autechre might make if jungle was in their DNA. The album ends on the dubbed-out drumfunk of ‘7 Years Or More,’ with an arrangement that builds a ﬁlmic, dusty atmosphere of chimes and electric guitar, layering in vocals, vinyl crackle and echoing synth giving way to tough drums, before all that is taken away so that just a voice remains.
