This Issue: Richard Rosenblatt at VizzTone

How did you personally get started in the music industry?

I’m primarily a blues harmonica player, though I play other instruments rather badly, and I have been playing in bands since I was YOUNG, which is about 50 years ago. That led to me dabbling with multi-track recording, and then…

When and where did the label begin?

Well, the label followed on the heels of my previous label, ToneCool, which I ran from 1985-2005. That started with my own band, then some great Boston-based blues artists, one of which happened to be Susan Tedeschi. Susan changed everything by being an amazing artist, getting nominated for a Best New Artist Grammy, and having a certified Gold Record. We did two records with her, signed the North Mississippi Allstars, and did about 50 very cool records until things took a dive and we wound up selling out in 2005. Round about then I got a call from an old friend, blues legend and former Muddy Waters guitarist Bob Margolin, who said he was thinking of starting a label with Blues magazine publisher Chip Eagle, and asked if I wanted to get involved. I told him if he wanted to start a label, sign artists, produce their records and lose a lot of money, I knew exactly how to do that! But maybe we should try something different, work with artists who would produce and own their own records, and do some profit-sharing. That seems to have worked. Chip Eagle passed away, and we brought Amy Brat into the company, and here we are, so I guess that’s the beginning.

Is the label tied to a specific geographical area?

NO - I”m in Boston, my partner Bob Margolin is in North Carolina, Amy is in Chicago, and we have artists from around the world. The only place we all usually get together is Memphis, for Blues Foundation events the Blues Music Awards and International Blues Challenge weeks, so that’s always been a hub for us. We have won dozens of Blues Music Awards, and of course have probably had more than a hundred nominations, and we always have great showcase events on Beale Street.

If you had to start a new sub-label, what would it be called and what kind of music would it be geared towards?

HA. Given the state of today’s music business… I think it would be geared towards another line of work!

What was the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic, and is it still a challenge?

Well, one thing, my band (who started it all in 1985) started doing remote recording and videos. We changed the name from 11th Hour Band to the 11 Guys Quartet with our 2020 album, and have been recording remotely ever since. Our latest single stayed on the Sirius/ XM Bluesville top 15 chart for FOURTEEN WEEKS!

How has the label changed since it started?

Well, after original partner Chip Eagle passed away, and almost immediately after we met her, we added Amy Brat as a partner. She works with me on ALL aspects of the label, and is a publicity/marketing genius. That helps. And of course now we are much more geared towards the digital marketplace, and do many more single releases.

Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix?

We began as a BLUES label, but have many artists who are in the grey areas between Blues and America, Rock, Folk, etc.

How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label?

Just trying to do our best and achieve success for our artists.

How would you describe the average fan of the label?

Anyone with extremely good taste! But yeah, primarily blues fans.

Where do you go to search for new music? Who or what has been a new find (on the label or otherwise) you’d like to rave about?

We signed the past two winners of the Blues Foundation’s INTERNATIONAL BLUES CHALLENGE, Dylan Triplett and Mathias Lattin, and they are both AMAZING!

We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why?

You are correct, I can’t choose.

How do you feel about the rising costs of vinyl records? And what about the continued popularity of the CD format?

Vinyl has never been a big part of our label, not as strong in the blues marketplace as other genres. I think many blues fans (and blues DJs) will continue to want CDs, because a lot of us like our collections and can’t figure that digital stuff out.

What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now?

Well, we used to sell more CDs. And yes, most of our income comes from the digital world. Go figure.

OVERVIEW

Aer thirteen years of silence from the compound, during which anticipation has grown day by day, Boards of Canada finally return. Inferno retains their signature melodies and atmospheres, drawing on the esoteric influences explored in Societas X Tape (their 2019 NTS mix for Warp Records’ 30th anniversary) and the darker ambience introduced on Tomorrow’s Harvest, further deepened by an expanded role for speech soundbites. Spanning seventy minutes, the new album is available on special edition limited red translucent 2LP vinyl in triple gatefold sleeve with a 16-page booklet, black 2LP vinyl and CD with 20-page booklet.

Since the release of his critically acclaimed debut full length, 2023ʼs Come Around and Love Me , Jalenʼs career has undergone a meteoric trajectory. The track “If You Donʼt Want My Love” went viral, garnering 253 million streams to date. Jalen has appeared on a bevy of first-rate television programs—notably, Graham Norton, Late Night with Steven Colbert and Later with Jools Holland. He opened for Thee Sacred Souls on their national US tour, as well as Olivia Dean on her 2023 UK tour, and has sold out countless club dates across the globe as a headliner. Now, in 2026, with the embers of his debut still burning brightly, Jalen prepares to drop his eagerly awaited sophomore album, Doctrine of Love

The hard work and relentless touring behind his debut has fortified his craft. His message: "The doctrine of love holds that every thought and action should be guided first by compassion for others, because love is the highest measure of human worth." The tracks on the forthcoming album are born from this creed. With his deep knowledge and love of classic soul, Jalen delivers authenticity in abundance. Doctrine of Love blends pop sensibility and soulful melodies with raw grit and groove, expanding on the orchestral arrangements of Come Around and Love Me with flourishes of horns and gospel-kissed background vocals, creating a highly stylish exercise in modern soul artistry.

OVERVIEW

After the passing of Lee “Scratch” Perry, a deluge of recordings appeared claiming to be the “last” or “final” project of the Jamaican icon. These came from musicians and producers from an incredible range of genres—trip hop, dub, ambient, rock, reggae. This range represented Perry’s hunger for new sounds and ideas. However, his last official album project took him to Berlin, Germany where he landed on the doorstop of electronic pioneers Mouse on Mars (aka Jan St. Werner and Andi Toma). If he was coming, which one of his personae would arrive? The Upsetter, Pipecock Jackxon, The Super Ape? Maybe Inspector Gadget, or The Firmament Computer, or just scratch from “chicken scratch,” the title of one of his singles from 1965.

Behind these masks was Rainford Hugh Perry, often described as one of the single most important figures in the history of Jamaican music. Producer, engineer, label owner, performer, his impact traced ska to rocksteady to roots reggae, to sound systems, to dub, to Bob Marley and Junior Murvin and Max Romeo and The Congos and so many other legends. Generations passed through him and his ears. And beyond them his influence included punk, funk, electronic music, hip and trip hop as well as his own uncategorizable career as explorer of words, sounds and esoteric concepts.

Mouse on Mars are recognised as one of Germany’s most defining and versatile electronic music projects. Across more than 3 decades, they’ve released over 10 albums including Niun Niggung (1999) and Idiology (2001) - the former was declared the Album of the Year by The Wire – several EPs, an imagined film score for Werner Herzog’s Fata Morgana and many more idiosyncratic projects. They’re also known for their work with Stereolab, Bon Iver, Tyondai Braxton, The National, Matthew Herbert, Modeselektor, Tortoise.

There are still mysteries about Perry’s decision to come to Berlin and work with Mouse on Mars, but one thing they all understood - what they created together would not be reggae. He wanted to explore something different from anything he’d done before. Where could a voice that had been everywhere go now?

Spatial, No Problem. is the story of what Lee “Scratch” Perry left behind in Berlin in his encounter with Mouse on Mars. It’s a story of spaces mixing, and cultures morphing towards a different kind of future.

SELLING POINTS

• The official final record from Lee “Scratch” Perry; A unique and timeless collaboration between legendary electronic duo Mouse on Mars and the dub visionary.

• Immersive album playbacks scheduled, including at New York’s Long Play Festival and The Barbican (UK).

ZOH AMBA

In music, Zoh Amba is always striving for greater proximity to the divine. On EyesFull, their debut singer-songwriter release and first with Matador, they’ve never come closer. Having already become one of the most exciting saxophonists to emerge from NYC’s avant-garde scene, Amba is now letting their heart guide them back to their first instrument, the guitar, and to their hometown of Kingsport, Tennessee. The music is distinctly, instinctively tied to that place: muddy, loose blues with sweet burnishes of Appalachian folk. It feels like a pure transmission of their soul.

Every song on EyesFull circles the idea of seeing and being seen. The record looks closely at the lives of working-class folk in small towns who bust their asses off while trying to find any salvation they can. “I hope these songs touch people’s hearts,” Amba says. “They’re about people who really need to be seen and heard.”

EyesFull is a lesson in how to look and to stay open to the universe, and to all the hearts that inhabit it. Through Amba’s gaze, the album restores spirit and dignity to those who are often overlooked or dispossessed. Across EyesFull, Amba sings for people who rarely see themselves reflected back with tenderness. The music carries an ache for communities pushed to the margins, for those growing numb or losing touch with their innermost sense of self. These songs insist on sustained attention: on looking closely, meeting another person’s gaze, and refusing to look away. LP OLE-2234-LP 191401223416

With two extraordinary mini-albums making a splash on London’s World of Echo label in wake of their self-titled 2020 debut, Somewhere Good is, in many ways, the Tara Clerkin Trio's most realised work. In running their usual gauntlet of idiosyncratic approaches, Clerkin & co. color in and outside of compositional lines over the course of 40+ celebratory minutes - never wallowing, despite inherently somber subject matters of self-defeat, disease, displacement, restlessness, gentrification - allowing their arrangements and improvisations ample space and time to situate, stretch out, breathe, cross-pollinate, and ultimately take deeper hold on the listener’s imagination – all while somehow sounding more like themselves than ever before.

Of course, there are traceable influences herein.. Being the big dumb American from the small boring town that I am, cornfed on ‘90s alternative radio with the enchantingly exotic sounds of Maxinquaye and Mezzanine emanating from my chunky tube television, I can’t help but to make a blatantly obvious reference to a “Bristol sound”, ie the whole trip-hop trip, the pastoral crooning over the suggestive urban grime of cracked electro/piano treatments, the digitally-yet-primitively reconstructed James Bond soundtrack string-beats, etc.. But the Tara Clerkin Trio is so infinitely much more than that. There are elements of avant-pop, modern classical, kraut-folk, audio verité, dare I say indie rock (and not of the beer guzzling, masturbatory fuzz-flex variety but perhaps more like a Trish Keenan-fronted Faust, Adrian Sherwood at the mixing desk of If You’re Feeling Sinister, or – in expanding on our alternate reality – a world in which High Llamas cut a full-length for Warp Records with Andrew Weatherall on coffee duty). – Ryan Davis (Chicago, February 2026)

Another Country is the fifth full-length album by Cindy, the San Francisco-based group built around the songwriting of Karina Gill. Recorded, like all of its predecessors, in their hometown and with a consistent line-up held over from their previous record (the Swan Lake EP from 2024), it is replete with the poetry of private vistas, eavesdropped dramas and confusing winds. These are classic Cindy concerns, and yet, as always, contain new mystery and charm to somehow feel like quiet revelations each time. Another Country is both opaque in its intentions and specific in its presentation, and as such presents the kind of truth that keeps the listener on the search for answers just out of reach.

"The title of this record, Another Country, refers to the James Baldwin novel of that name. The book has a kind of drama that makes sense to me. When I look around, the obvious explanations are not enough. The miasma of feelings and ideas that is supposed to account for it all, doesn't. Baldwin washes past that to longings that begin to explain. Cindy songs come out of the x-rays my particular brain makes out of what I see and experience. What you hear on this record is the result of collaboration with the members of Cindy that transforms that shadowy thing into full color, fully fleshed. Each of them, in music, is sure-footed and unblinking, and making this record together felt like, yes, yes, you see what I mean."

Haylie Davis – Wandering Star

• The debut album from Haylie Davis, an LA based singer-songwriter traversing alternative country, indie and American folk

• One of Rolling Stones’ ‘Future 25’ of 2026, highlighting rising stars (last year included Benson Boone, Lola Young, Wunderhorse and fcukers).

• Part of an intriguing LA scene that boasts several acts harking back to the halcyon days of Laurel Canyon songwriting – including Alex Amen, Drugdealer, Sylvie and Sam Burton

• For fans of Weyes Blood, Angel Olsen, Lana Del Rey, Clairo, Joni Mitchell, Emmylou Harris.

• Press support from Rolling Stone, Shindig, Americana UK, Raven Sings the Blues, Still Listening

•

Los Angeles–based singer-songwriter Haylie Davis presents Wandering Star, a coming-of-age debut that unfolds like a Townes Van Zandt tale set in a deserted diner off a re-routed interchange: intimate, cinematic and quietly fearless.

Haylie Davis channels the spirit of the early ’70s, when Carole King and Joni Mitchell redefined songwriting. That time-travelling sensibility is celebrated on Wandering Star, the album’s title track. A piano-led meditation steeped in longing, the song carries the eerie shadow of Karen Carpenter, buoyed by a luminous, aching submelody.

The blissful ballad ‘Horns of Time’ taps into a plaintive cosmic country palette reminiscent of Emmylou Harris. ‘Give Me a Rainbow’ follows, a lo-fi folk reverie recalling Clairo, as if filtered through a back-porch-reclining, wide-eyed Dolly Parton in awe of her own roots. Rolling Stone has hailed Davis’ earlier recordings as “gently hued Laurel Canyon folk-pop songs”, and on Wandering Star her compass swings wider still. Her maturing worldview and distinctive vocal at times evoke Lana Del Rey and Weyes Blood crafting an ode to Gram Parsons - a hybrid on full display in the self-examining passion of ‘I Was Wrong’.

A fresh take on modern pop, Wandering Star is infectious, brimming with hooks, soaring choruses and storylines that tug at the heartstrings.

Artist: Mekons

Title: Horrorble (Mekons vs Tony Maimone In Dub Conference)

Release date: 2026-06-05

Label: Fire Records

Track List

Mekons - Horrorble (Mekons vs Tony Maimone In Dub Conference)

Horrorble is a full-length dub reinterpretation of Mekons’ acclaimed 2025 album Horror, created in collaboration with Tony Maimone (Pere Ubu). Songs from Horror are pulled apart and reshaped into a drifting dub landscape. Basslines stretch and dissolve, rhythms echo into open space and tracks are dismantled and reassembled into versions that drift, jar and unravel. Working with Maimone, the album treats dub as subtraction, space and echo rather than simple revision, revealing hidden textures and new emotional weight within the original recordings.

The partnership has deep roots. Mekons first toured with Pere Ubu in 1988 and later worked closely with Maimone in the early 1990s. That shared history informs the exploratory spirit of Horrorble, reframing the urgency of Horror through atmosphere, rhythm and sonic deconstruction.

Featuring a guest appearance from Benji Webbe of Skindred on “Mudcrawlers”, the album transforms familiar material into immersive, echo-laden soundscapes that emphasise tension and depth.

The original Horror confronted climate catastrophe, economic violence and political decay through rock and roll, punk and melody. Horrorble reveals its shadow counterpart. Formed in Leeds in the late 1970s, Mekons have always operated as a collective, working outside trends and expectations. Guided by the belief that the political and personal remain inseparable, they continue to create on their own terms, combining experimentation with a call to organise and resist.

Speaking about the new collection Cowboy Junkies’ Michael Timmins said: “We are now 25 years into this century, the beginning of which saw us leave the world of major labels and return to making music as an independent band. We figured this was as good a time as any to look back, reassess, and reflect on the music that we have recorded over these past two and a half decades and, hence, Open to BeautyThe Best of the 21st Century.”

The enduring power of Cowboy Junkies’ music was in evidence recently when their signature performance of Lou Reed's “Sweet Jane” was featured in the final episode of NetflixTV series StrangerThings. A

THE BETHS FUTURE ME HATES ME

The Beths occupy a warm, energetic sonic space between joyful hooks, sun-soaked harmonies, and acerbic lyrics. Their debut album Future Me Hates Me delivers an astonishment of roadtrip-ready pleasures, each song hitting your ears with an exhilarating endorphin rush like the first time you heard Slanted and Enchanted or “Cannonball.”

Front and center on these ten infectious tracks is lead singer and primary songwriter Elizabeth Stokes. Stokes has previously worked in other genres within Auckland’s rich and varied music scene, recently playing in a folk outfit, but it was in exploring the angst-ridden sounds of her youth that she found her place. “Fronting this kind of band was a new experience for me,” says Stokes. “I never thought I had the right voice for it.”

From the irresistible title track to future singles “Happy Unhappy” and “You Wouldn’t Like Me,” Stokes commands a vocal range that spans from the brash confidence of Joan Jett to the disarming vulnerability of Jenny Lewis. Further honeying Future Me Hates Me’s dark lyrics that explore complex topics like being newly alone and the self-defeating anticipation of impending regret, ecstatic vocal harmonies bubble up like in the greatest pop and R+B of the ‘60s, while inverting the trope of the “sad dude singer accompanied by a homogenous girl-sound.”

All four members of The Beths studied jazz at university, resulting in a toolkit of deft instrumental chops and tricked-out arrangements that operate on a level rarely found in guitar-pop. Beths guitarist and studio guru Jonathan Pearce (whose other acts as producer include recent Captured Tracks signing Wax Chattels) brings it all home with an approach that’s equal parts seasoned perfectionist and D.I.Y.

“There’s a lot of sad sincerity in the lyrics,” she continues, “that relies on the music having a light heart and sense of humor to keep it from being too earnest.” Channeling their stew of personal-canon heroes while drawing inspiration from contemporaries like Alvvays and Courtney Barnett, The Beths serve up deeply emotional lyrics packaged within heavenly sounds that delight in probing the limits of the pop form. “That’s another New Zealand thing,” Stokes concludes with a laugh “We’re putting our hearts on our sleeves—and then apologizing for it.” The result is nothing less than one of the standout records of 2018.

Does the term “concept album” send visions of grand orchestral choruses and strange mythological creatures vaulting through your mind? Well, this album’s gonna change your mind…forever. 1993’s River Runs Red is a concept album, all right, but its themes include alcoholism, physical abuse, and, ultimately, suicide. The record interpolates dramatic, staged skits that tell the story of a troubled teenager edging closer to self-harm between intensely personal songs penned by bassist Alan Robert that range stylistically from New York hardcore to gloom metal to grunge. The intensity just keeps ratcheting up until River Runs Red ends with the sound of blood from a suicide attempt dripping into bathwater… which would ordinarily require a spoiler alert except for the fact that throughout the album the protagonist’s trajectory is clearly headed in only one direction. Cult classic status is almost a given with a plotline like that, but in this case it’s well earned; River Runs Red isn’t just one of the greatest concept or metal albums ever made. It is, quite simply, one of the most powerful records ever made in any genre. An earlier vinyl reissue sold a bunch, but it’s been out of print for over a decade; our remastered-for-vinyl release comes in a clear with red and blue swirl pressing manufactured at Gotta Groove Records and accompanied by an insert. A masterpiece.

DRY KILL LOGIC: THE DARKER SIDE OF NONSENSE

(25th Anniversary Remastered Milky Clear Vinyl Edition)

STREET DATE: JUNE 5, 2026

Dry Kill Logic got lumped in with the “numetal” movement of the early ‘Oughts but their 2001 debut The Darker Side of Nonsense wields a brutal sonic bludgeon of singular power. In fact, even Roadrunner, a label not known for pandering to popular taste, asked the band for a more commercial sound on its projected followup, which led to Dry Kill Logic’s leaving for pastures less dedicated to green. Indeed, vocalist Cliff Rigano’s lyrics give no quarter: “What goes around comes around/Once lost now I am found/All of this hatred I focus on you.”

On the 25th anniversary of its original release, we’ve remastered The Darker Side of Nonsense for its vinyl debut, and faithfully re-created the beautifully grotesque artwork with a jacket and color inner sleeve. Reissued with the full support of the band on milky clear vinyl!

MEAT PUPPETS: Forbidden Places

( 35th Anniversary Coke Clear with Yellow Swirl Vinyl Edition )

STREET DATE: JUNE 5, 2026

Indie-rock darlings the Meat Puppets didn’t miss a meat, er, beat with their move from SST to the major London label and their release of 1991’s Forbidden Places. In fact, the album arguably represented a step up from their late-period work at SST, displaying that offhandedly brilliant charm that won the band so many fans in the first place. The album opener “Sam” is a frenzied rocker that recalls the early days with maniacal, “auctioneer”-style vocals, and the album closing, pickin’ and spinnin’ instrumental “Six Gallon Pie” is equally breakneck in tempo and dazzling in execution. “No Longer Gone” offers a hit of that desert mysticism that leavened albums like Meat Puppets II and Up on the Sun, and “Whirlpool” showcases Curt Kirkwood’s underrated guitar chops. In short, an essential piece of the Puppets’ catalog, finally widely available at retail on vinyl for the first time since its release 35 years ago. Artist: Golems of the Red Planet Album: Surf Masada (tribute to John Zorn)

Hard to imagine – but here’s an Instrumental Surf Music tribute (à la The Ventures under the influence of Capt. Beefheart and Electric Light Orchestra) to John Zorn!

Golems of the Red Planet are a collision of lifers, iconoclasts, and joyful saboteurs drawn from the outer edges of art rock, jazz, surf, and the happily unclassifiable. Guitarist Harvey Gold, a founding force behind Akron’s legendary Tin Huey, brings decades of boundary-pushing work with Half Cleveland, Sally Spring, The HiFis, and his solo release It’s Messy Vol. 1. Bassist Mark Allender—true Zornophile—emerges from The Pointless Orchestra and a string of idiosyncratic solo albums. Drummer Bob Ethington has anchored everything from Unit 5 and Glenn Lazear to The Robert Ethington Quintet. Cellist Matt Reese adds a melodic wild card honed with Trial of Lucy and Flying Carpet People. Together, they form a band whose collective résumé reads less like a CV and more like a map of creative resistance.

Golems of the Red Planet were formed from the mud of radically diverse musicians drawn to John Zorn’s Masada—compact, fiercely elegant compositions built to be exploded by other artists. The Golems’ twist was to use surf music as a launching pad, not a destination, filtering these Ashkenazi Jewish folk modalities through reverb, propulsion, and a gleefully warped sense of possibility. “Starting point” is the operative phrase: while Surf Masada occasionally dives headlong into genre pleasures, the band’s true instinct is insidious expansion. Eclectic to the core, the Golems treat surf as a language they’re fluent in—but never obedient to—reshaping it with wit, muscle, and a lifetime of beautiful bad ideas.

THE BEAU BRUMMELS: The Beau Brummels

STREET DATE:

JUNE 5, 2026

Has there ever been a band more underrated than The Beau Brummels? Their body of work stands up to many of their more celebrated peers (country rock, for one, is almost unimaginable without albums like Bradley’s Barn and Triangle). Thus, the 1975 reappearance of The Beau Brummels in their original line-up for the first time since their 1965 debut Introducing the Beau Brummels was momentous indeed. The eponymous record that resulted, produced by Ted Templeman and Lenny Waronker, still stands as one of the greatest “reunion” albums in rock history, featuring fine songwriting from Ron Elliott and vocal work by Sal Valentino in a classy update of the Brummels’ trademark folk and country-tinged style. However, bassist Ron Meagher left before the album was finished, and the band’s subsequent touring failed to connect the record in the marketplace, and so The Beau Brummels has never been accorded the attention it deserved. However, time for a reassessment is nigh…because this new expanded edition features pristine remastered audio and no less than a baker’s dozen unreleased demos, alternates and outtakes from the album sessions recently located in the Warner Bros. label vaults. Reissue producer Alec Palao has worked closely with the surviving Brummels in shaping this release, and tells the full story of its evolution with an extensive essay inside the illustrated package. Available on CD and a two-LP orange vinyl pressing!

Having put out the soundtrack to the all-time great rom-com Sleepless in Seattle on vinyl, we HAD to release You’ve Got Mail, too! After all, the two films shared the same writer/director (Nora Ephron), co-stars (Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan), and even kinda the same plot with a little help from The Shop Around the Corner (except this time instead of a radio show it’s an online chat room that brings the two lovebirds together, complete with hysterically out-of-date, dial-up email graphics). But most importantly, both movies boasted boffo soundtracks; like he did in Sleepless in Seattle, Jimmy Durante has the last word (with “You Made Me Love You)” but You’ve Got Mail also features three tunes by Harry Nilsson and songs by Carole King, Stevie Wonder, Bobby Darin, Roy Orbison, and more, with a nod to the more contemporary set with Sinead O’Connor and the Cranberries. Our release comes complete with an inner sleeve containing a ruby platter…an iconic soundtrack from an iconic film!

• Pressed in Yellow and Magenta Tulip Splatter Vinyl

with Magenta Tulip Splatter Vinyl Edition)

If you think, based on “Tiptoe Thru’ the Tulips with Me” and his nationally televised marriage to Miss Vicki on The Tonight Show, that Tiny Tim was a mere novelty act, think again. Behind that ukulele, pasty white make-up, falsetto, and prominent proboscis was a serious scholar of American music, perhaps the only performer of the ‘60s (and certainly the only performer of his age group) keeping the torch alive for songs from vaudeville and Tin Pan Alley. Tim (born Herbert Buckingham Khaury) also was blessed with a stupendous vocal range, from baritone to his trademark falsetto, and was adept on not just ukulele but guitar, mandolin, and violin. Even with all that talent, though, had Tiny Tim just made a straight ‘20s trad jazz/pop/folk album for his debut record, God Bless Tiny Tim would not be the stone-cold cult classic it is today. But the album married Tim’s innate eccentricity with stupendously lush production from Richard Perry, who was fresh from working on Captain Beefheart’s debut, Safe as Milk, and would go on to produce everybody from Diana Ross to Rod Stewart. With Perry’s production, and Artie Butler’s arrangements, God Bless Tiny Tim featured an incredible assortment of instruments, from didgeridoo to koto to celeste to tympani, with nary a ukulele to be found on many of the tracks. Furthermore, the album was sprinkled with some of the psychedelic fairy dust that was in the air at the time (1968), full of non sequiturs both verbal and musical (like the cover of Sonny Bono’s “I Got You Babe”). The result: an

that stands outside of time, defying categorization or description. Now, Real Gone Music is releasing God Bless Tiny Tim on LP in an oh-so-appropriate yellow with magenta “Tulip Splatter” edition. This record belongs in any serious—or not-so-serious!—record collection.

JACKIE DeSHANNON:

GIRL OF YESTERDAY—ACOUSTIC FOLK DEMOS

(CD & BEIGE VINYL EDITION)

STREET DATE: JUNE 5, 2026

Love Forever, our 2025 set of demos from Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Jackie DeShannon, set collector hearts a-flutter all over the world with its collection of introspective, folk rock-flavored tunes drawn from her unreleased recordings for Metric Music publishing. Now, we’re one-upping ourselves with Girl of YesterdayAcoustic Folk Demos, a collection of COMPLETELY UNRELEASED acoustic folk demos from Jackie, taken from the same rich source of material. Folk music came naturally to Jackie. She got her start singing gospel at home and in church as a child in her native Kentucky, and then singing country songs in her teens on her own weekly radio show. And her first, self-titled album for Liberty in 1963 consisted entirely of folk repertoire. But that album only featured folk songs written by other artists. Girl of Yesterday-Acoustic Folk Demos, on the other hand, presents a dozen tunes, all penned by Jackie for an album distributed by Metric in 1964. Accompanied only by her own accomplished fingerpicked acoustic guitar, DeShannon delivered a stunning set of heart-rendingly sung, haunting music imbued with the doubt, confusion, and excitement of finding adult identity. Although grounded in acoustic folk, it looked forward to both folk-rock and the singer-songwriter era in its lyrical maturity and melodic complexity. Only 500 to 1000 copies were pressed in November 1964, its availability limited to various A&R personnel and other music industry staff who made decisions with recording artists looking for material. With Girl of Yesterday-Acoustic Folk Demos, this remarkable material finally gains the exposure it deserves.

Among the highlights are a couple of songs that were soon covered by famous artists. Certainly the most renowned is “Don’t Doubt Yourself, Babe,” given a Bo Diddley beat by The Byrds (Jackie was a huge Byrds booster and fan) on their Top Ten 1965 debut album Mr. Tambourine Man, though it was titled “It’s Gonna Be All Right” on her far folkier arrangement on the original Metric Music demo LP. And Marianne Faithfull covered the superbly bittersweet “With You in Mind” on her 1967 album Love in a Mist. We also hear the first appearance of “Splendor in the Grass,” later a 1966 DeShannon single given backing by The Byrds.

Richie Unterberger’s notes feature candid recollections from Jackie about the motivations behind the songs and the vibrant, mid-‘60s LA scene from which they emerged. Remastered by Mike Milchner at Sonic Vision and featuring photos from Jackie’s private collection, Girl of Yesterday— Acoustic Folk Demos is available in a beige vinyl edition or on compact disc. A missing and utterly charming chapter in both Jackie’s own evolution and the progression of American folk and pop to more sophisticated forms.

OS MUTANTES WORLD PSYCHEDELIC CLASSICS 1: EVERYTHING

IS POSSIBLE THE BEST OF OS MUTANTES

Back in 1999 when David Byrne originally compiled this retrospective—making it the first in our critically acclaimed WorldPsychedelicClassics series—the idea of doing a psychedelic album from outside the U.S. or Europe was a total surprise. More than twenty years since this anthology first hit the shelves, the mutants are back in stock— with their electric guitars, cans of bug spray, and deviant, freaky psychedelia.

“The late 60s in Brasil produced an explosion of creativity that is still reverberating throughout the world... and Os Mutantes (The Mutants) were the most outrageous band of that period. Their creative cannibalism produced psychedelic gems unlike anything aelse, and they sound as relevant today as anything happening anywhere. They were exactly what their name implies—a mutant genetic recombination of John Cage, The Beatles, and bossa nova. A creature that was too strange and beautiful to live for very long, but too strong to ever fade away. It lives again. Be prepared.”

Emerging Toronto-based indie-rock band madfolk's new selftitled album showcases a young band at the start of a promising career. With propulsive guitars, crashing drums, driving bass and killer choruses, madfolk deliver nine tracks of fizzing indie-rock. Emo-tinged lyrics and alt-country influences can be heard, with an early-2000s glow around the record reminiscent of bands like Gin Blossoms and Third Eye Blind, all packaged with a youthful zeal and a knack for writing a secret pop hook

madfolk is the kind of album that can only be made by friends who have stuck together through all the highs and lows of life and coming into your own. By the end, they don’t claim to have any answers, but instead present snapshots of all the chaos and messiness inherent in figuring it all out The band sought to take that uncertainty and angst and make it exciting. Along the way, they also made it profound creating a sophomore album that is the sound of a band becoming who they were always meant to be.

SWALLOW Blown

Their 4AD output - Blow + Blowback + bonus tracks available on Milky White 3XLP + 2XCD

One of the more enigmatic bands of the classic 4AD era, Swallow was formed by Louise Trehy and Mike Mason, who met in early 90’s Camberwell, London.

Their first songs quickly surfaced and were recorded onto a Tascam 4-track portastudio. Louise posted the four-song demo to Ivo Watts-Russell who signed them to 4AD, sight unseen.

With the task of finishing their first record, the pair borrowed guitars from Tom Greenhalgh of the Mekons and they decamped to record at Edinburgh’s Palladium Studios and later, Blackwing in London. John Fryer was enlisted to produce (right off handling Nine Inch Nails’ Pretty Hate Machine), utilizing Eventide Harmonizers (a Cocteau Twins staple) to provide the band’s lush, ethereal dazzle.

Blow would be released in July of 1992, and arrived in a sleeve designed by Vaughan Oliver (v23).

The band found the finished album different than they imagined it would sound. Feeling as though their initial ideas had been lost in the production, they petitioned Ivo to re-record parts of the album; he suggested they remix the tracks as they wished, instead. New mixes and overdubs resulted in dissonant and ambient versions closer to the band’s intentions, Released as Blowback in the autumn of 1992 as a limited CDEP that quickly fell out of print, it was known only to the most fervent 4AD fans.

At long last, Swallow’s 4AD recordings will be paid their due via a new double-LP+ 12” package entitled Blown. Comprising both Blow and Blowback, the previously unreleased title track “Blow”, and “Lovesleep (Vocal Version”). The songs were reconstructed from the original 24-track tape recordings and remixed. They were freshly remastered by Anne Taegart at Dubplates & Mastering Berlin and lovingly presented in a brand new package designed by longtime supporter Chris Bigg (v23). A cornerstone dream pop classic obscured by the mists of time and memory, until now.

Saxophonist and composer Steve Cole has become one of the most celebrated and popular artists in contemporary jazz since his debut album in 1998. With his new album, Sleight of Hand, Cole pulls no punches, combining the sounds of two cities, Chicago and Minneapolis, that have come to define his musical identity. Partnering with producer David Mann for a collection of 10 new original songs and featuring guitar phenom Cory Wong (Vulfpeck, Fearless Flyers), the album is both familiar and adventurous, exploring the world of jazz within the pulse of disco, energy of house music and influence of the Minneapolis sound.

Ital Tek's new album 'Mind Abandon' takes a different direction from his recent run of releases, embracing a more human touch in contrast to the dense, world-building drone of his previous albums and film work. This time, he set out to compose away from the computer as much as possible working more instinctively and allowing himself to get lost in the music.

Alan found the most natural starting point was his own voice, processing vocals into shifting pads and textures. His guitar sits at the centre of much of the record, joined by live, hand-played percussion and effects, often captured in quick, spontaneous performances. The result is an album of spacious, contrasting dynamics, with textures pressing against each other and rhythmic elements fighting to surface from glutinous, layered sound.

"It feels like a very introspective record for me," Alan says. "Losing my sense of identity/self as part of the process - the increasing effort to calm my mind and embrace humanity/imperfection in the music. This path made sense as a jumping off point for a lot of the music to be vocal or guitar experiments - singing in ideas and then processing to become less identifiable."

The album feels carved and three-dimensional, weaving industrial and shoegaze influences with the darker edges of post-rock. Subtly embedded in its architecture are traces of dubstep dynamics a sound that remains part of Alan's DNA.

Opening track The Ice Is Thin is driven almost entirely by live guitar and keyboard, awash in reverb. On A Hidden Path, everything apart from the drums stems from processed vocals and guitar, with a fleeting appearance from his daughter's toy ukulele. It unfolds like the beginning of a journey vast and cinematic nodding to the widescreen tension of Ennio Morricone before building into a towering wall of noise.

Killswitch disorients with pounding kick drums crafted from twanging acoustic guitar, pushing through layers of static-charged chords. Undertow spirals outward on looping guitar figures set against a pulsing Rhodes. Misted, built around a rare four-to-the-floor beat, uses guitar as a driving rhythmic device, opening with a bassline that wouldn’t feel out of place on a The Cure record. Imagined Landscape introduces icy keyboard textures that foreshadow the dark closer, The Pull, where an arpeggiated bassline reminiscent of DAF underpins unnerving, internalised sound design that feels as though it's scratching from within.

Mind Abandon closes on a heavy, stalking note fresh sounds drawn from the body and the heart.

Dedicated to Ace Frehley, who passed away on the very day this performance was recorded, Lifandi is Bjørn Riis’s deeply personal tribute to one of his lifelong musical heroes, and to the golden age of classic live rock.

Raised on the legendary live albums of the 1970s, Riis channels that spirit into Lifandi, a title meaning “alive” in Old Norse. The album captures the raw energy and emotional immediacy of the stage, bridging the timeless essence of progressive rock with the introspective depth of his acclaimed 2025 studio album Fimbulvinter.

Recorded during Riis’s 2025 European tour, this carefully curated mini-live album presents powerful performances of th e epic title track “Fimbulvinter” and the haunting lead single “Gone”, alongside fan favourites “Getaway” and “Where Are You Now”, both originally featured on the 2017 album Forever Comes to an End. These performances are not mere reproductions; they are elevated, expanded, and charged with the dynamic intensity that only a live setting can provide.

Lifandi features Bjørn Riis on vocals and guitar, Simen Valldal Johannessen on keyboards, Arild Brøter on drums, and Øystein Sootholtet on bass. The album is mixed and mastered by Vegard Kleftås Sleipnes, ensuring a rich, warm, and dynamic sound that honours the tradition of classic live recordings while delivering modern sonic clarity.

Lifandi is more than a live release it is a statement of vitality, legacy, and connection between generations of progressive rock.

THE SOUND OF DIFFERENCE AND CONNECTION

Maya Dunietz presents The Sound of Difference and Connection, a new composition emerging from her artistic research into the irrational midpoint of the octave. Developed with Berlin’s Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop, the work explores a narrow acoustic zone where two close frequencies generate slow beatings and a third, emergent tone, a sound created not by an instrument, but by the relation between at least two instruments At moments the sound appears to rise not from strings or breath, but from the air itself: a shared, fragile resonance

This piece positions the ensemble as a living organism in motion. The musicians do not tune to fixed pitches; instead, they listen for the pulse of proximity: moving closer to slow the beating, and farther apart to quicken it. Each gesture reshapes the temporal field, producing delicate shifts within a deeply focused continuum.

Recorded during a period of global unrest, the work unfolds as a quiet act of resistance.

Practicing attention, care, and collective listening.

Maya Dunietz is a composer, performer, and sound artist whose work moves between music, visual art, performance, and technological research. Her works have been presented at major institutions such as Centre Pompidou, Palais de Tokyo, Fondation Cartier, Arnolfini Gallery, Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, and the Reykjavik Arts Festival. Dunietz performs internationally as a pianist in both composed and improvised settings.

Formed in Jacksonville, Florida, in the mid-1980s, the Beggar Weeds were a trio who chased the offbeat driving miles out of their way on tour to visit strange museums and roadside oddities. Their music reflected that same fascination with the eccentric: a jangly mix of R E M , the almost-falling-apart-ness of the Replacements, and the rumbling melodicism of Hüsker Dü, filtered through Southern folk and punk grit. Their lone 1988 EP, Sure Pants Alot, captured their raw, fast, and fiercely melodic sound equal parts humor, heartbreak, and rural storytelling.

LENTAMENTE BIENVENIDA

Lentamente is a band from San José, Costa Rica, influenced by Dream Pop, Post-Punk, and Shoegaze. Since 2020, the project has released three fulllength albums, two EPs, and several singles through independent labels such as Z Tapes, Furia, and Stupid Decisions, among others. Their music has been issued in multiple formats, including cassette, 7-inch vinyl, and CD.

Lentamente is the moniker of musician and producer Arío Rojas. For live performances, the Ario is joined by Pablo Matamoros (Adiós Cometa), Esteban Fuentes, Diego Cubillo (Decora, Nuncamuere), and Sebastián Álvarez (Dylan Thomas., A Su Ladera)

The third full-length album, Bienvenida, was released in October 2023 and represents the most polished work in the band’s history. The record marked a turning point for Lentamente, solidifying the project’s longevity and expanding its recognition within the Latin American indie scene. The album has a shoegaze/dream pop sound with Cocteau Twins/Robin Guthrie guitars and the catchy energy of The Radio Department.

In 2024, Bienvenida was followed by the single “Sacré Coeur,” which further expanded the album’s artistic vision. The single is also included exclusively in this new Burnt Toast Vinyl edition.

is a band from San José, Costa Rica, that since 2015 has established itself as one of the most restless and compelling acts in the Central American alternative scene. Their music moves between intensity, sonic exploration, and melodic sensitivity, evolving toward increasingly complex, dense, and rhythmic compositions, marked by a taste for risk and constant transformation.

The band formed when Jan Pfeiffer (vocals, guitar) and Diego Cordero (drums, production) met at the farewell concert of the legendary alternative venue El Steinvorth in late 2015. Both barely eighteen, they bonded over shared musical ideas and experiences playing in local bands that only lasted a few rehearsals. After quickly composing their first few songs, inspired by the likes of Dear Nora, Le Mans, and Deerhunter, the band decided to settle on the name Esto Mató a Dylan Thomas., an abbreviated translation of the Charles Bukowski short story “This Is What Killed Dylan Thomas”, which in turn was shortened to after a few months. The dot remained.

Playing through different lineups, the band shortly became a mainstay of the new generation of bands in the San José alternative scene. A year later, Sebastián Álvarez (guitar, synthesizers) and Esteban Garita (bass, backing vocals) joined as permanent members, consolidating the lineup that would stay in place for almost a decade. In mid 2017 they self-released their debut EP, Suceso en la Plaza, which was then published by Burger Records LATAM. The release helped the band attain considerable status within the regional independent circuit.

In 2019, released the single “Luces Violeta” and embarked on their first tour of Mexico. Later that year, they self-released their second EP, Algunos Recuerdos Distantes, a work that delves deeper into nostalgia, memory, and introspection, recurrent themes that were already present in their previous release and would reemerge later on. After a brief hiatus in 2020, the group decided to resume the project with a renewed perspective, focusing on the search for a new sound and the reconfiguration of their creative dynamics. Their return to the stage also marked the beginning of a more daring compositional phase. In 2022, the band returned to Mexico for a second time and released the single “Lentitud” under the Colombian label Rompeolas Records.

In 2023, began recording their debut LP, Todo se desvanece, a title which can be translated as “everything fades away”. The project was tracked between Mexico City and San José, as Garita moved to Mexico at the start of the year to pursue a career as a film maker. The main tracking, however, was done at Cordero’s then home studio, which shortly after evolved into Buen Fantasma Estudio. Tracked mainly with an entry-level sound interface and a budget of $1,200, of which $800 were strictly allocated to as many low-quality beers as possible, the album’s sound more faithfully captures the intensity and aggressive character of their live performances, while its lyrics explore the passage of time, the deterioration of people and spaces, and the loss of memories. Influences at the time of recording included Sonic Youth, Niños del Cerro, Whirr, Television, Smog, Women, King Krule, Rocketship, and Sparklehorse; as well as Graham Greene’s The Power and the Glory and detective novels by Paco Ignacio Taibo II and Leonardo Padura.

Due to the band’s work and study commitments at the time, as well as the increasing distance at which the members lived from one another, recording sessions took place only once a week over several months. This often made the process slow and frustrating, an experience referenced in the instrumental song “Albatros.” Meanwhile, Garita recorded his bass parts at El Nido de Tokat, with José Manuel Germán (Los Blenders) serving as engineer. The record was mastered in the United States by Julian Picado, while the artwork was made by Daniel Ortuño (Los Waldners). Todo se desvanece was self-released by the band on 11 July 2024, followed by several shows in Costa Rica and a short tour of Mexico.

Street Date: June 5, 2026

NORMANS is a Southern California–based electronic music project formed in 2021 by visual artist Matthew Reid (Blonde Summer), Michael Perry Rudes (FEELS), and Kyle Souza (Prissy Whip). The group operates within a tense, controlled framework built on repetition, low-end pressure, and disciplined electronic structures, producing music that is physically immediate and deliberately uncompromising.

Early coverage framed the project as striking and visceral. Scene Point Blank described NORMANS as “synth-laced noise punk reminiscent of 1979, 1994, 2011 and 2024,” while Buzzbands.la noted the band “does not play nice… dark, menacing, ear-splitting and chaotic.” These early releases established a confrontational foundation rooted in urgency and restraint.

With the release of their sophomore album, ‘Faust Demonica’, NORMANS present their most refined work to date. The record emphasizes clarity, precision, and atmosphere, pairing polished electronic production with a darker melodic discipline while maintaining the project’s core intensity. Supported by stark visual presentation, NORMANS explore control, latent fear, and psychological pressure, favoring structure and tension over conventional release.

‘Faust Demonica’ will be available digitally as well as a limited edition first pressing on black vinyl from Solid Brass Records on 6/5/26.

“I guess you could call it a lost album,” says Rodney Crowell. “I stumbled upon it in my vault at home. I’d forgotten about it completely.” He’s referring to Then Again, which he recorded and shelved two decades ago before moving off into new directions. Since then, the album has been biding its time, waiting for the moment when its songs would hit hardest. And they hit incredibly hard now, largely because age and experience have granted Crowell a richer perspective. “I’m glad I put it on the shelf, because now is the time for it. It may not be the time for it for the rest of the world, but it’s time for it for me. That’s why I wanted to call it Then Again. I thought that was a clever way of saying that what was happening then is happening now.

Back in 2006, Crowell was in high cotton. He was coming off a trilogy of albums—The Houston Kid in 2001, Fate’s Right Hand in 2003, The Outsider in 2005—that re-established him as a fearless voice in Americana and attracted new generations of fans drawn to his compassionate storytelling, his detail-laden songwriting, and his eloquent outrage over political injustices. In 2005 he went into Treasure Isle Studios in Nashville to record what would become Then Again. But when he heard the masters, something didn’t feel quite right. The band was smokin’ hot and the songs sounded good, but the album just didn’t move him and he struggled to figure out exactly what was wrong or what was missing. Twenty years later, when he found the album in his vaults, he couldn’t remember exactly what tripped him up. He decided it was finally time, if only because “I heard a record I wasn’t sick of. I was no longer sick of myself. That’s what 20 years will do for you.”

Once lost and now found, Then Again is something the Rodney Crowell of the 2000s could never have predicted but something the Rodney Crowell of the 2020s recognizes instinctively: a work of nuance, insight, and sensitivity that considers death but celebrates life. “I’m trying to understand that this spirit of mine is going to leave this body and go off somewhere else. I’ve got a pretty good idea that it’s going to be someplace good, but I still need to perfect some part of my spiritual journey here before I check out. I can see that in these songs now.”

THRILL JOCKEY

The work of BIG|BRAVE is ever-expanding. The trio’s singular masterful sculpting of sonics into songcraft tucks layers of vulnerability into frenetic storms. in grief or in hope is an innovative vision of electro-acoustic sound and emotive storytelling, an endless bounty of overwhelming distortions and devastating beauty. in grief or in hope marks a shift for BIG|BRAVE towards denser guitar-oriented compositions. With longtime touring bassist Liam Andrews (MY DISCO, Aicher) joining guitarist/vocalist Robin Wattie and guitarist Mathieu Ball in the studio for the first time, the pieces are keenly layered with a rich tapestry of harmonics and tonal intricacies. The trio’s instinctual progressions made more vivid through live recording, harnessing the gargantuan and storied sound of their performances. Wattie writes: “All that I could reflect on was grief and hope; death and life; cause and effect; shared experiences of being a human person.”

The tenth album for the ensemble, in grief or in hope pays homage to their past while looking into their future. Standout “the ineptitude for mutual discernment” expands on lyrical themes first explored on 2015’s Au De La where “verdure” echoes melodies from the title track of 2014’s Feral Verdure. These references to their past serve as potent reflections on BIG|BRAVE’s evolution as artists. A sonic whirlpool of string instruments surround Wattie’s commanding vocals as she shifts from spectral undulations on pieces like “what may be the kindest way to leave” to the direct, spare declarations of the title track. The ambiguity of mountainous chords on “an uttering of antipathy” are coupled with autotuned phrases emphasizing the protagonists’ isolation inside the fray. Together the trio shift deliver emotional momentum that vividly describes the complex and deep feelings of struggle, pain, and transcendence. in grief or in hope transmits that sense of humanity with every gesture.

THRILL JOCKEY

Cloud Machines is the extraordinary debut collaboration between M.C. Schmidt of legendary electronic duo Matmos and John Berndt, the Baltimore avantgarde institution and band leader behind High Zero Festival, the Red Room collective, Geodesic Gnome, and radical sonic concepts like Spectral Relay (a bespoke signal processing architecture) and Relabi (a conceptual genre defined by a Rorschach-blot pulse. These two iconoclasts have delivered something genuinely unexpected: an oddly sweet electronic opus that’s as immediately engaging as it is a series of delicious puzzles. When two of experimental music’s most irascible characters spend twelve years crafting an album, you don’t just get another release—it is an anthology of pocket universes.

The record is a love letter to two of their strongest mutual influences of the 1980s—the delirious comic books of French auteur Jean Giraud (AKA Moebius) and the beautiful miniatures of the SKY Records Cluster/Eno/Conny Plank collaborations. Cloud Machines honors the spirit of those ineffably “hermetic” creations by reinventing their legacy through the lens of decades of accumulated experimental practice and the duo’s singular creative personalities. The result feels simultaneously like rediscovering a lost classic from 1978 and receiving a transmission from an alternate, somehow better timeline in 2026.. Yet unlike so much “difficult” experimental music, Cloud Machines maintains an uncanny and sneaky accessibility—each track a self-contained world, inviting and alien in equal measure.

It’s not always a two man show. On side one, “The Analysis of Joel” refracts the prepared guitar playing of Joel Knispel into eerie shards as M.C. Schmidt counters with processed fragments of the music of Polish electroacoustic composer Bogusław Schaeffer. John Berndt takes a solo on the mysteriously poised synthesizer etude “The Balcony.” Side two features the largest ensemble piece, “Gecko Lazzaro” a slow-burning sinuous bassline groove featuring the trombone playing of Baltimore improviser Patrick Crossland and a suitably fried guitar solo from Owen Gardner (lead guitarist of Berlin-by-way-of-Baltimore out rockers Horse Lords). Like a kaleidoscope turning slowly towards and away from different light sources, genres and traditions seem to emerge from the haze and pull into focus and then melt away again, but never constrain the constant sense of exploratory forward movement.

“John Berndt’s HighZero unabashedly caters to adventurous audiences and offers a major challenge for the improvisers, who are put in contexts where their stock personal musical languages may not work, pushing them into terra incognita. The results are often magical.” - WYPR

“For three decades now Daniel and Schmidt have found gaps where experimental approaches and sources can leak into music that could be played in a club or on the radio, showing that stretching the Overton window of musical sounds doesn’t have to be restricted to rarefied settings.” - The Quietus

“The two men of Matmos are living rebukes to the idea that conceptual art is somehow scary and inaccessible. When they decide to make a track out of the sounds of a breast implant or a cow uterus, they’re challenging themselves not just to use those noises, but to make them sound funky and fun.” - Pitchfork

BIG D AND THE KID’S TABLE

ANOTHER AMERICAN SATURDAY NIGHT

AVAILABLE JUNE 12, 2026 ON BLUE DREAM SPLASH VINYL

They don’t really make a guidebook for ska punk bands entering their fourth decade, but even if they did, David McWane and the rest of BIG D & THE KIDS TABLE probably wouldn’t be interested in reading it.

After all, one of the key foundational principles of BIG D has always been that they play by their own rules and abstain from tying themselves too closely to any one scene. It’s why the spirited Bostonians have not only survived, but thrived as entire generations of skabased bands came and went behind them.

And as their first new album in five years, Good Ole American Saturday Night, shows, McWane and the band are continuing to evolve and grow even a dozen records into their career — all without compromising on the things that brought them success in the first place. In fact, BIG D’s 12th full-length release explores new sonic ground while returning to the familiar faces at SideOneDummy Records along with the ska royalty duo of the Mighty Mighty Bosstones’ Joe Gittleman and Reel Big Fish’s Matt Appleton as producers.

But aside from working with Gittleman (who also produced BIG D’s Strictly Rude in 2007) and Appleton (who also engineered the new album and produced their last album, 2021’s Do Your Art), Good Ole American Saturday Night is everything fans of BIG D should come to expect after 30 years. It perfectly balances McWane’s relentlessly positive energy with the catchy melodies, tight musicianship and unforgettable tongue-in-cheek lyrics that have kept audiences engaged all along. Of course, while other bands may be more negative given the current social injustices, political turmoil and other unpleasantries in the world, McWane remains steadfast in his optimism. If there is one message BIG D AND THE KIDS TABLE wants their hungry listeners to digest on their new album, it’s to “love more.” Good Ole American Saturday Night absolutely contains their stapled punk rock messaging, but this time it’s being delivered in a positive way, with the mission to allow their listeners to feel empowered, inspired and loved.

Denver, CO’s Public Opinion are back with a new three-song EP, Perpetual Motion Machine, arriving this fall via their new label, Side One Dummy. The EP is a promising start to the band’s next chapter, drawing more melody out of Public Opinion’s primal punk while keeping the unhinged glint that makes their music so compelling. The EP’s monster opening track and lead single, “Laughing Academy” features guest vocals from none other than Drug Church frontman, Patrick Kindlon. The track bursts from the speakers, careening from swaggering garage rock riffs into a massive chorus, all while vocalist Kevin Hart and Kindlon perform the most pissed-off duet you’ve ever heard.

Public Opinion–Hart, drummer Austin Latare, guitarists Kevin Johnson and Brent Liseth, and bassist Sebastian Stanley–emerged from the Denver, Colorado, hardcore scene in 2020 and have evolved from spunky proto-punks into an anthemic rock & roll powerhouse. Perpetual Motion Machine follows the band’s debut album, Painted On Smile, which came out last year and drew praise from the likes of Stereogum, BrooklynVegan, Paste Magazine, and more. The new songs were recorded by Christian Gutierrez and mixed/mastered by Brett Romnes (Anxious, Oso Oso, I Am The Avalanche) and they pick up where Painted On Smile left off, dialing up the band’s catchy and confrontational blend.

The band will be on tour across the US this fall with Militarie Gun before heading into the studio to record with producer Brett Romnes.

How do you make a documentary film about a man who was also a myth? About a musician who was more than a musician? About someone who asked us to trust our intuition more than our rational minds? This double LP contains the entire soundtrack to the accompanying PBS documentary! Includes liner notes from executive producer Bradford Smith about the making of Sun Ra: Do The Impossible and interviews from members of the Arkestra!

Firelight assembled an incredibly talented team headed by Director/Producer Christine Turner, and six years later in June of 2025, our documentary, Sun Ra: Do The Impossible had its world premiere at the Tribeca International Film Festival. Our goal was to make a film that would be respected by Sun Ra “insiders” while leaving new audiences wanting to learn more. After screening at festivals across the U.S. and around the world, Sun Ra: Do The Impossible was broadcast by PBS/American Masters on February 20, 2026 where it is currently available for streaming. For an artist who spent his whole life in what he called the sub-underground, establishing Sun Ra among the canon of American Masters delivers a measure of cosmic justice.

With chart-defining records, sold-out tours and festival headline slots behind them, Embrace remain one of the defining bands of their generation. Avalanche, their ninth studio album, arrives in 2026 as the band celebrate their 30th anniversary

Written and recorded with a renewed sense of perspective, Avalanche sees the band stripping things back emotionally and sonically. Danny McNamara describes the record as the most honest and open work Embrace have made, choosing feel over polish and allowing songs to remain imperfect, unresolved, and human.Remarkably, the band’s line-up has remained unchanged since1996 a rare continuity that underpins their longevity

Rather than offering answers, the album sits with the reality that life is fragile, overwhelming, and fleeting and that meaning often exists in paying attention to what’s already here. Thirty years into their career, Embrace sound less concerned with legacy and more committed to capturing something real, right now

Avalanche is released June12, 2026 More information on Embrace’s live shows and 30th anniversary events can be found at embrace co uk

'We came into this album with a really simple idea: that real, deep, honest-to-God joy doesn’t live in the big, dramatic moments we’re all taught to chase. It doesn’t live in huge, unattainable goals or impressive, life-changing achievements It lives in the small, almost invisible flashes of magic that happen when you slow down and actually live in the moment Lyrically, I was trying to capture those little magic moments. Ironically, I’ve spent most of my life not noticing them, and when I finally did, they all came at once it’s been pretty overwhelming Which I guess is why the title AVALANCHE felt so right." -Danny McNamara

Mana

Mana is the International Anthem debut by trombonist and composer KaliaVandever.

The collection carries the spirit of their first solo album, We Fell In Turn, while entering a new landscape of spacious songwriting. Mana, which in Hawaiian means “foundational, supernatural, or divine power and strength,” reveals more of their voice and words, drawing from yearning, loss, and bewilderment.

Vandever’s music has quickly and widely gained traction in the last few years despite the fact that their style has been consistently difficult to pin down, boasting a compositional scope ranging from the palatial modern jazz of their quartet work to the synthetic, gauze-like droning ambience of their solo material.

Mana leans into the expansion of the latter: solo trombone filtered through a well-dialed pedalboard, manipulated live; spare piano à la the late-career work of Ryuichi Sakamoto; electroacoustic interplay simultaneously echoing and transforming the long-note melodicism of Vandever’s melancholic brass work; head-on, unambiguous, and deeply personal lyricism—a particularly fresh move for the composer…

Appropriate for the early riser’s first step into the day or the night owl’s weary and quiet walk home. IARC0111 Kalia Vandever Mana Format/Release Date:

Philippines

Jazz, Fusion, Latin Jazz, Disco-Funk

Following the success of the 'Ayo Ke Disco' compilation (on Soundway) in late 2024, Norsicaa returns to Asia with a brand new label.

Jazz-fusion, disco-funk, Latin jazz and batucada rhythms get the Filipino treatment on After Midnight, the sublime second album from keyboardist Boy Katindig. Originally released in 1980, After Midnight draws heavy influence from soul and funk contemporaries in the US as well as Latin America, in particular the famed Brazilian percussionist Paulinho da Costa.

It’s a testament to his musical prowess that Katindig weaves effortlessly between styles and tempos. His reverence for Paulinho da Costa extends far, with covers of several songs from the latter’s 1979 Happy People album. This includes slow-burner ‘Déjà Vu’ written by Isaac Hayes originally for Dionne Warwick; on the Filipino instrumental version, local legends Jun Regalado and Roger Herrera (from Regalado’s ‘Pinoy Funk’ single) are reunited on drums and bass respectively.

But Katindig’s original compositions hold just as much weight and unique personality: title track ‘After Midnight’ opens with a sultry funk serenade reminiscent of The Isley Brothers, and quickly transforms into a catchy, blistering, saxophone chorus that brims with swagger. Hidden B-side gem ‘Got The Need’ is an uptempo tribute to batucada that would not be out of place in a jazzy house set, and boasts increasingly elaborate and psychedelic solos from Katindig on keys and Ben Concepcion on soprano sax.

Meanwhile, ‘Love Till the End of Time’ is a masterclass in instrumental disco funk, penned by the prolific Greg Phillanganes who at that same time was writing for many of the greats including Chaka Khan, George Benson, Stevie Wonder, The Jacksons and Cheryl Lynn.

New from the land of misfit toys - Kansas - comes Jetenderpaul Presents the Modal Lines, JTP's latest album on Burnt Toast Vinyl. These four lads from Olathe, KS, take the Midwestern heart and run it through a blender of pop paranoia in the familiar festoons of their basement studio. Call it subversive oldies or a Beatles reckoning, but the fact remains that despite cerebral filigree (a motley collection of graduate degrees), there's no enough superstar ego here to kill a horsefly. The result is aggressive music with soulful humblings and rumblings.

Since 1996 Jetenderpaul has evolved in the science of its soul and the soul of its science. The Modal Lines is the band's crowning achievement, a variety show high-stepping down memory lane, all trussed up in the bubblegum pink of their liner notes. Like a stake through the heart over tea and crumpets, JTP tears down the temple in cheerful reverence, only to raise it up again in a faithful space-age reproduction.

The Modal Lines is the culmination of attention garnered by 1999's The Woolen Spires, also on Burnt Toast Vinyl. Its success sent the four lads grabbing for their satchels and scrambling over the towers of their respective graduate schools to play as many American music festivals as possible. When they found themselves splashed on the pages of Tokyo magazines, they had a good laugh but kept their heads on straight, kept writing and returned to the basement studio to churn out a work that is all at once simpler and more faceted.

Elegantly modern, yet more authentic than the current avante-psychedelia, Jetenderpaul Presents the Modal Lines achieves in 13 tracks something almost unheard of - irony without emptiness, homage without imitation. In between is spun sugar - infectious pop-a-daisy for those with a taste for milk and honey.

From the campy hooks of "A Readjustment" to the near perfect pop of "George Gabelson," JTP distinguishes each song inside a disjointed narrative. Sometimes compared to The Flaming Lips, Ween, or Guided By Voices, Jetenderpaul is faithful to its remote origins as a chameleon of modern music.

Jetenderpaul began in early 1996, when a particle of the Holy Grail landed in the Kansas basement of Randall Stephens and Jared Miller. After adding Jeff Teel on guitar, and Bobby Cave on drums, the band immediately was signed to Velvet Blue Music in California. Trying Signals: The Histrionics of Suggestion, released in March 1997, encoded an ambitious 27 songs in 39 minutes. Now on Philadelphia's Burnt Toast Vinyl, critics have acknowledged Jetenderpaul's "resurrectionconducting crash-and-burn experiments" (Village Voice writer Bryan Zimmerman) and their "perfect pop songs" (The Copper Press).

With The Modal Lines Jetenderpaul is constantly achieving the unlikely, writing music as dedocumentation, dusting for the fingerprints of the prophets, for the not-so-obvious traces of wound and whimsy, squinting at the light in the cracks between the studio floorboards and winking it into modern music.

All I remember from Kansas was long straight roads and nothing to see but the occasional truck stop diner for 400 miles, but this group must be hiding in the same sort of underground bunker, and taking the same sort of pharmaceuticals, that Flaming Lips did in their neighboring Oklahoma. This is similar twisted psych-pop that squeezes improbable songs out of lazy singing, Olivia Tremor Control kitchen sink-instrumentation, MBV or ‘60s Pink Floyd drone chords, playful sounds, and an overall strain of experimentation. Take the ‘60s pop form and subvert and divert it until it sounds wrong, somehow, and you often get the most fun results. Whether it's a flute, a harpsichord, or synths making those sounds we hear behind that grinding guitar, we can't be sure, but it sure is off-kilter messy frolic. The piano-pushing Beach Boys' Pet Sounds/Smile tribute of "The Piles of Paper Left By You" just adds to the sport. --Jack Rabid, The Big Takeover

Jetenderpaul sounds like a wonderful, clattering mess on its CD The Modal Lines (Burnt Toast), throwing conventional ideas of what a record ought to sound like (more echo on that already echoey keyboard!) out the window, but sacrificing nothing in songcraft, harmonies or woolly, psych-pop soundtreats. The Jetenders have out-wigged the Elephant 6 gang at its own game. . . –Time Out New York

The Modal Lines offers the best pop songs of Jetenderpaul's career. The songs rely heavily on melody, as always, and Randall Stephens and Jared Miller deliver vocal lines with the sort of intelligence that demonstrates clearly that the boys have done their pop music homework. It's a clever mix of the classic — such as the Beach Boys — with the current — Apples (in stereo). A rewarding listen all the way around, and easily more than good enough to cut through the sudden glut of indie/retro-pop bands and records, and distinguish Jetenderpaul as one of the best pop groups going.–Kindred Winecoff, Bandoppler

Jetenderpaul is not the sort of name that produces a whole lot of recognition from people, even those who try to search out the weird and wonderful. Yet they have already got to their third album whilst remaining in relative obscurity. Presents The Modal Lines is a rich, varied album that likes to stray off the beaten path, yet manages to stay listenable. They share a similar sound to Olivia Tremor Control, but they manage to keep the psychedelic weirdness under control. The most bizarre thing about the album is the strange song titles, most of which seem to have little to do with the actual song. The album is wonderfully under-produced, with some songs sounding incredibly messy but in the best possible way. Much of that comes from having so many things going on at one time, musically, with lots of vocal harmonies, percussion and fuzzy guitars dominating the songs. But that isn't even close to summing up the cornucopia of noise you'll hear on Presents The Modal Lines, because variety seems to be the key here. You can't help but think if Jetenderpaul had some kind of connection, no matter how vague, to the Elephant 6 group, then this would be getting a whole lot of press and even more praise heaped upon it. As it is, Presents The Modal Lines will end up being one of those hidden gems that never gets the exposure it deserves. –Michael Edwards, Exclaim Magazine

While the bedroom provinces and "edge cities" of Middle America usually vacuum up any semblance of avant-garde grit, the Olathe, Kansas-based band Jetenderpaul has been riddling the surface-film of their Heartland backwater with reckless creativity. The Woolen Spires is the band’s second full-length album, made entirely in their Honeycomb-hideout dormer studio on Meadow Lane, only an afternoon drive from the 100th Meridian. Like the semi-arid, Planet of the Apes landscape around them, JTP’s recordings have always been a place where atmospheres and eras collide. From the very start they’ve ventured through the gamut of pop sensibilities—from astronaut to swamp creature perspective, from lackluster apocalypse to resurrection—conducting crash-and-burn experiments with sincerity, and writing anthems in their own convoluted language. At 27 songs in 39 minutes, the first full-length album, Trying Signals: The Histrionics of Suggestion, is a mere spin through the dial, but it’s definitely one of those "been held back too long" kind of first-albums that bleeds with potential. Musing pop vocals ran through church-in-a-roller-rinkquality mics; "hook-laden" melodies flipped through modular contexts; lyrics sparkled with jump-cut academese slop; and infectious polyrhythm numbing the young Sheetrock. Five hundred copies are out there, somewhere.

So I’m pleased to announce that The Woolen Spires is even better. The band has emerged from the incubator in full flesh and spirit, and the new document is out on two labels. It seems like the alchemy is fluttering out of their hands and flooding under the laboratory door, which is exactly what they want. Co-songwriter Randy Stephens once described JTP’s wily appropriation as sounding "like if you ran pop music through somebody else’s brain," and Spires is a new stadium full of channels. If you don’t like one, just flip to the next. After listening to the tracks for a few months now, in my room and out on the streets, I’m blissfully slipping into a network of soundvisions: daytime t.v. tableaux (from nature-documentary riffs to local jewelry store ballad to gameshow theme), AM-radio insects, historical panel discussions at the video game parlor, GBV lost in the library... The other principle songwriter, Jared Miller, acknowledged that "there has to be something obscure to be revelatory." To me, it’s actually so "obscure" that it’s somehow straight from the heart—a 1999 "high and lonesome, " except their Appalachia is a sea of information-age debris.

The JTP sound might also be an attribute of what Stephens describes as "the audiontology of multi-tracking." It’s another cryptic Jetenderpaulism, but it aptly describes their home recording process, and their peculiar spaces-inside-spaces-inside-spaces determination to build and excavate until they reach the fresh and rustic core. Instead of selfishly waxing on the easy idiosyncrasies of bedroom pop, they use all the freedom and intimacy of a home studio as a means to make multi-faceted, time-shaped recordings. Stephens told me that some of the tracks within songs on The Woolen Spires differ in age by a year or more. The result is a time-released mystery: pop seasons lingering between melodies and bridges, disjointed narratives of equipment upgrades, fermented-like-wine orchestration—with all the wilderness that’s discovered when a song has time to run.

It would be easy for me to go on surmising until it all consumes itself—JTP-style, but I really don’t want to cheapen or pillage the novel experience of hearing this band. Not that anyone’s theories can threaten these virtuoso degenerates. True soul rebels don’t mind being relegated to the frontier of indie footnotes, where they can practice stunts and roam our collective unconscious. As the opening verse in track 4 humbly declares: "Don’t be afraid/We are prophets of little consequence/You’re not amazed/But we can’t let that shake our confidence." --Bryan Zimmerman, The Village Voice

Weird and wired without withholding the jams at the expense of some aloof artiness, The Woolen Spires is a mix-and-match, cut-and-paste affair of home recorded oddities and lo-fi rockers, the latter certain to get the toes tappin' and the former serving to get the head a-scratchin'. These are perfect pop songs forever gone astray once they leave the boys' heads and become ensconced on the recorder. Gems, all. -- Steve Brydges, The Copper Press

Like The Korgis and M. Newell were united, and K.G. Wonder + GBV were possessed by it or something...various pop flavors that were twisted, in a good way. Awesome band! From Kansas. This is their 2nd. This is my first time to listen to their music, but I suddenly thought they're so talented! Very dark horse. You should listen to this record! --Kawasaki, Beikoku-Ongaku, v. 14 (Tokyo)

This disc is, as far as I'm concerned, the reason that four tracks were made. When songs are as well crafted as this, little recordings like this, made in someone's dimly lit bedroom somewhere, a brilliant discovery. I must say also that I have to giggle when Elephant 6 noodlers like Olivia Tremor Control, Of Montreal and The Music Tapes get beaten at their own game this badly. I mean how much better is the experiment when the solution is actually worth listening to? One thing that's admirable about The Woolen Spires is that it's dense, but still very clear. Lots of stuff going on, but melodies are precise and memorable. – Jetbunny

Guests is the home recording project of Jessica Higgins and Matthew Walkerdine. Vaguely named as such to avoid any problems with the poster if they pull out of a gig but also to capture a sense of reverse hospitality. That is, arriving at your door with a bottle of good wine (can’t turn up empty handed) or a fist full of savoury or sweet snacks (time of day dependant); oversharing at the afters (and then passing out on your couch); reading to your toddler while you make their lunch or put everything back where it was meant to go (only to get torn apart again). So, something about what happens when private worlds meet each other, making or having been made a space for. But at times, it’s a different kind of intimacy, a temporal or material one, like the feeling of crisp fresh sheets, and abundant and soft, body-part appropriate towels in a hotel in a city you’ve been to before and love to go back to.

Their debut record, “I wish I was special”, was variously described as “a collage of concrète experiments and outerzone pop gestures, music that sounds as if it’s been written from the depths of a dream”; “music for people who love music but also hate it too”; “something like chasing ghosts or befriending a wild animal”; “pulling apart nervous sensations with haphazard ease and requisite humour”; and “a melody of refusal, of being all-in (…) finding the exact right WRONG sound to express the discontent”. Common Domestic Bird continues in this vein, layering synthesiser, keyboards and samples over rudimentary drum rhythms and field recordings, which are in turn sung or spoken with to create nine new songs.

London quartet The Leaf Library return with their bold new album After The Rain, Strange Seeds. A luminous collection of pastoral indiepop, drawing inspiration from suburban isolation, unreliable memories and the surreality of the weather. Their most immediate and melodic work to date, the richly evocative songs brim with chiming guitars, buzzing organs and warm, dulcet strings, evoking Yo La Tengo’s more contemplative moments, The Clientele’s autumnal jangle pop and early Stereolab’s motorik melodicism. The sound of the album is defined by mixer John McEntire, whose work with Stereolab and Yo La Tengo (as well as a member of Tortoise/The Sea And Cake) have been major inspirations to the band.

The album explores themes of memory and place, albeit through an abstract haze – returning again and again to specific moments frozen in time: midsummer bright hot days in the Chilterns (“Sun In My Room”), meteorology and the strange movement of the weather (“Colour Chant”), red kites circling over suburban motorways (“Some Circling”), and the uncanny feeling of dusk and nighttime creatures on “The Reader’s Lamp” (titled by celebrated film director Peter Strickland). The lyrics are vivid yet elliptical, strung with abstract ideas and imagery, conjuring a gently unsettling, though never unwelcoming atmosphere. Not quite trusting your own recollection of things, while marvelling at the oddness of the natural world, the album’s title a good summation of the mix of strangeness and hope contained within.
