If you had to start a new sub-label, what would it be called and what kind of music would it be geared towards? We have in fact created a number of sub-labels over the years: Satellite Records (which released indie and experimental rock such as Add N to X, Scott 4), Universal Sound (which released specialist solo artists such as ESG, Jackie Mittoo, Doug Carn) and World Audio Foundation (which released the sacred and spiritual music such as Georgian and Haitian recordings). How has the label changed since it started? It now has a catalogue of 600 releases rather than one! What was the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic, and is it still a challenge? Hmm well we still sold records (I can’t really remember how we did this because all the shops were shut!). Then after the pandemic, about a squillion labels wanted to use the diminishing number of pressing plants around the world so manufacturing times went crazy. At the moment everything is great.
How did you personally get started in the music industry? I left college and was bored and didn’t know what to do. I had never been to the USA and wanted to go, and I wanted a way to hear lots of records that I could not afford. I found out you could be a courier for airline companies which meant cheap flights so off I went. We stayed in youth hostels and visited as many record shops in the USA as is humanly possible. I shipped 1,000 jazz and soul records back to the UK and opened a small shop to sell them. I repeated this process multiple times each year (to the present day). Aside from visiting record stores we would sometimes knock on the doors of long-defunct record labels in the USA in case they were still there. One was Tribe Records in Detroit – it was the home of Wendell Harrison, founder of Tribe Records, and his wife Pamela. Another was Bob Crawford who owned a label that had released an album Eddie Russ – “Fresh Out.” Aside from selling me some records, he asked me if I wanted to buy the rights. With little knowledge but much enthusiasm I said ‘yes ok’. A distributor found out we were releasing it and offered to buy 2,000 if I gave it to them exclusively. I said ‘ok, if you pay me upfront’. So that was how I got the money to release our first record! Before working at the label did you have any experience playing in bands or making music of your own? Yes, I was in a few bands in Newcastle in the north of England. One was the Arty-Farty Party Band, another was the Earth, Wind and Fire Extinguishers. (Truth be told they were pretty much the same group of people). We mainly played covers of funky stuff like James Brown, Kool and The Gang). And no we never made any records. When and where did the label begin? 1992, London – the first release was the aforementioned Eddie Russ – “Fresh Out” album (which originally came out in the US in 1974). Shortly afterwards we began releasing new music from a number of customers who came in our shop; Jessica Lauren, Moving In The Right Direction, Esperanto. This became the identity of Soul Jazz Records – a mixture of releasing music from different eras and places and occasionally releasing new music alongside.
Where do you go to search for new music? Who or what has been a new find (on the label or otherwise) you’d like to rave about? I live above Soul Jazz Records. Below Soul Jazz Records is a record store – Sounds of the Universe. I hear a lot of new music! My favourite new artists are the ones we currently work with – Trees Speak (from Tucsan, Arizona) and Brown Spirits (From Melbourne, Australia). We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why? Oooh, no! OK: Nu Yorica, New Orleans Funk, New York Noise, Punk 45, Deutsche Elektronische, 100% Dynamite series, Can You Dig It? Black Action Films, Bossa Nova, Studio One, Tropicalia, Cuba: Music and Revolution, Brazil 70, Universal Sounds of America, The World of Arthur Russell, Soul of A Nation. Whoops, that’s more than one. What is your stance on color vinyl? What’s the most unique color LP or overall packaging you’ve ever seen or released? Yes, I quite like coloured vinyl. My favourites are from my childhood - A record that came with a horse racing board game. Depending on how the needle lands, that record announces a different winner of the race. We used this idea for a ‘3 sided record’ once. Two concentric grooves mean that you get a different song played depending on how the needle drops. How do you view the issue of being environmentally sustainable within the music industry? I collect records – many of them are at least 50 years old and many of these still have the original shrinkwrap on them and will be on the earth a good deal longer than the packaging of a ready-meal from a supermarket. They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or sohow would you like the label to be remembered? Being flip I’d say I don’t care. But really . . hmm bit like Picasso’s artworks. (Is that pushing it a bit?)

Recorded between the iconic Abbey Road and Polish Radio studios, Hania Rani’s original music for Joachim Trier’s Cannes and Golden Globe winning, Oscar and Bafta nominated ‘Sentimental Value’ is a deeply intuitive collaboration, composed before a single frame was edited. For Hania Rani composing for the most recent film by Joachim Trier was nothing less than a true joy and a real artistic adventure. As she explains: “It doesn’t happen often that I’m asked to work on a film by a director whose work I know so well and which resonates with me so naturally. What I understood while working with such an intriguing mind and intelligent artist as Joachim is that the role of a film composer is to wander along with the director, hand in hand, rather than follow one another. The collaboration should be a partnership - evenly balanced and able to invigorate people on both ends - otherwise it will always feel superficial, imposed, and timid” Intriguingly Hania worked on the score for Sentimental Value without an edit in hand; instead, she was given a carefully written script and the freedom of her own substantial imagination. “This way of composing suits me perfectly, as I’m not the type of composer who works comfortably with particular scenes, slightly immune to functionality in music in general. I prefer to ponder sound in separation from the image. It enables me to fabricate more abstract sequences that are not yet expressed in the film and to bring a new context to the existing narrative. Music as an inherent counterpoint - this sounds more intriguing to me”. For Hania the biggest challenge of the score was its gravity - or rather its visibly elusive nature. The story told in the film oscillates around three characters and the motionless presence of the house, yet the relationships between all these personalities are not fixed, but in progress. Those subtle qualities were at the center of her attention and became the core topic of numerous discussions with Joachim about the music, the film, and the philosophy behind Sentimental Value. “I wondered how to express such translucent virtues in this score; that’s why a great deal of the process was embedded in exercises of mediation and translation. In order to avoid directness, I decided to impure the sound with a succession of small sonic gestures - whether re-arranging, re-orchestrating, revisiting, stretching the duration, or simply recording in a new acoustic environment. The mediated sound and expression allowed me to model a soundscape that inhabits both the old and the new, much like the house, which holds within itself the past, present, and future”. In September 2024, Hania went to Oslo and spent a couple of days in the main film (the family home in Oslo) with her sound engineer, Agata Dankowska. The film crew was away in France to shoot another scene for the project, so they were allowed to freely explore the space - both visually and sonically. They made field recordings in the building, capturing the sounds of objects and furniture found in the apartment, and they also managed to record a couple of piano pieces. The house plays a significant role in the story, silently witnessing the tangled trajectories of its residents. “To explore its interiors so closely inevitably reminded me of getting to know a real person, with all their vulnerable parts and secrets. And although most of the recordings were not supposed to become part of the final soundtrack, I felt that this visit gave me access to another, far more intimate layer of the film, which immensely informed my composing process afterwards and reshaped my relationship with the project. There was a real sense of immediacy that felt exciting, instinctive, and simply incredibly special. Pressed on high quality black BioVinyl at Optimal in Germany for maximum sound quality.

Origin stories reenact familiar myths; this one begins with a kid alone in a bedroom, trying to make something no one has heard before. Hailing from San Francisco, Filipino-American artist April Harper Grey started making music as underscores in middle school, sharing a steady stream of SoundCloud one-offs and building a community of like-minded fans. The 2017 skin purifying treatment EP pulled her project out of its solitary origins, and by 2021, her debut album fishmonger (recorded in that same childhood bedroom during the pandemic) launched underscores from recording vocals in a car to opening for 100 gecs on their US tour. Highly skilled players and writers, the trio are leaders within the burgeoning Avant-Folk world. Growing up in Appalachia studying the folk traditions of the region in tandem scientific and observational work in nature, their music appears to weave in and out of the fabric of the landscape. The ensemble continues to stretch the parameters of acoustic instrumental expression with masterful flourishes of dense, textural arrangements, subtle minimalist gestures and deft improvisation. Heavy Water addresses the impact of nuclear production on the environment and the communities within, a musical evocation of destruction and resilience, an embrace of dissonance and tension within moments of transcendence. The inspiration for Heavy Water is rooted in fiddler Courtney Werner’s work as an ecologist in rural South Carolina. Werner explains: “The town of Ellenton, South Carolina was the largest of the towns displaced in 1952 by the U.S. federal government to build the Savannah River Plant, which produced radioactive materials for U.S. nuclear weapons during the Cold War. The former site of Ellenton was dedicated to the extraction of ‘heavy water,’ whereas other areas of the plant focused on manufacturing weapons-grade plutonium and tritium within nuclear reactors. Heavy water is chemically altered to be denser than normal water and is incredibly expensive and timeconsuming to synthesize, requiring 52 gallons of river water to produce one fluid ounce. Its denser properties made it valuable for use within the nuclear reactors on the site.” The pieces of Heavy Water address the loss of community and untold ecological fallout of invasive, irreversible actions. A verdant countryside often mythologized in American vernacular as a respite or refuge in reality is forever tainted, a dynamic whose emotional impact is captured in the compositions. “Appalachia and the rural south are often caught up with a cliché, whimsical desire to ‘return’ to ‘better’ times – simpler, more wholesome, relaxing, quaint,” Werner continues. “We are interested in the degradation and exploitation that permeates these landscapes and is smoothed over or repackaged in a palatable way in the preservation of their folk traditions. I felt the loss of the people whose livelihoods had been connected to the land and who were forcibly removed. The land is contaminated… The possibility of a lasting, personal relationship with it–through growing food, collecting clean water, building a home–is completely severed.” Heavy Water marks Magic Tuber Stringband’s first recording as the trio of core duo fiddler Courtney Werner and guitarist/organist Evan Morgan and longtime touring bassist/ banjoist Mike DeVito. Aided by field recordings by Jasper Lee and tape manipulation from Oliver Child-Lanning, the trio employ an entire ecosystem of sounds, from tender, reverent melodies to bristling harmonics to embellished sounds taken directly from the environment. “Sound of a Million Stars” takes its name from Japanese filmmaker Tomonari Nishikawa’s short film about fallout from Fukushima and invokes chaos and damage. “Woodpeckers” features a chilling back-and-forth between military exercise machine gun fire and woodpeckers of the Savannah River Site (SRS) tapping out mimicking rhythms. The gorgeous “Where the Place Becomes Forgetting” layers a counterpoint of steady, roundlike guitar and banjo riffing with fraught fiddle swoops and the sounds of Craig’s Pond along the SRS, teeming with wildlife, yet forever impacted. Heavy Water is more than a collection of songs. It is a work whose compositions are entirely modern. Played on traditionally folk acoustic instruments, it defies expectations and emotionally addresses the pain of lives human, flora or fauna irrevocably changed by dominant forces and defiantly persevering. It is a powerful musical statement by some of the brightest young players composing at the intersection between traditional instrumentation and avant composition.

Anderson has spent decades mining the veins of the complicated, interconnected American folk traditions she was steeped in from a young age, stretching beyond those traditions and incorporating the vocabulary and techniques of vernacular folk music from around the world into her work. Eschewing replication or revival, Anderson’s music lives in conversation with tradition. “My approach to tradition is with the hands that I have and the history that I have,” notes Anderson. “In that way it’s a collaboration–you don’t go into collaboration trying to play like the other person, you go in trying to find out how to play together.” The Anthology of UnAmerican Folk Music is drawn from nearly one thousand songs culled from the private record collection of the late Harry Smith. For this record, Anderson works on music from places that the United States has been in conflict with since 1970: Southeast Asia, the USSR and the Arabic and Islamic regions of the world. In Volume 1 Anderson presents her own deeply personal iterations of nine songs from the Anthology. Composed, transcribed and arranged through a process of trial and error, deep listening and research, Anderson charts a musical course from Afghanistan to Vietnam via Yemen, Cambodia and Turkmenistan. Interpretations of compositions from Pakistani qawwali and Syrian taqsim are played with Anderson’s deft and practiced hands. Each piece on the album stands as a dialogue between Anderson and the original source recordings, refracted through the prism of her unique musical lens. Anderson’s contribution to this dialogue ultimately invites the listener to join her in asking: “Who are the people we’ve been told in our lifetimes are “unamerican?” What have we lost or been denied access to in the fallout from that label?” Anderson notes: “I’m curious about how music is made, organized and shared. I am interested in how people and music move across the world, how war, migration, nomadism, colonization and contemporary and historical economic dynamics affect music and musicians. What is the musical relationship of people to place? How is that relationship altered when shifting borders or global conflicts curtail movement or force migration... What do we carry with us when we leave home, and what do we bring home from faraway places?” The instrumentation Anderson implements is largely familiar to her: electric and acoustic guitars, electric keyboards, requinto jarocho, accordion, tres cubano, and key featured performances by violinist/violist Gisele Rodríguez Fernández. The Anthology of UnAmerican Folk Music is as much a celebration of music from beyond borders as it is an examination of the borders real and imagined that have restricted folk tonalities and traditions across the globe. Filtered through decades of experience as a singular artist and interpreter of feeling and sound, the anthology’s first volume demonstrates Anderson’s reverence for those practices unfamiliar and largely discluded from the American lexicon while capturing the core humanity behind a diversity of musical expressions.

This album brings together some of the finest music ever released on Black Jazz Records which in its short four-year history, between 1971 and 1975, released over 20 superlative albums which all successfully blending spiritual jazz, funk and soul jazz of the highest calibre. Similar to other independent jazz labels at the time, including Strata-East Records and Tribe Records, Black Jazz focussed on a number of key artists, most of whom first established their career during this period, and all of whom are featured here. Featuring The Awakening, Doug Carn, Walter Bishop, Chester Thompson, Kellee Patterson and more. Black Jazz Records was founded in Oakland, California, by pianist Gene Russell and percussionist Dick Schory. The label released twenty albums between 1971 and 1975. Artists who recorded for Black Jazz Records included Cleveland Eaton (bassist for Ramsey Lewis), keyboardists Doug Carn and Chester Thompson, vocalist Kellee Patterson, saxophonist Rudolph Johnson, bassist Henry Franklin, and spiritual fusion group The Awakening. The label was distributed and financed by Ovation Records, based in Chicago. Schory founded Ovation in 1969, shortly after leaving RCA. Schory was a Grammy-nominated percussionist who was also known for his development of the stereo recording techniques including Dynagroove and RCA Victor’s Stereo Action. Schory also pioneered quadrophonic sound, and a number of Black Jazz Records were in quadrophonic and other formats such as ¼” tape and 8-track.

Black Jazz launched in 1971 with Gene Russell’s ‘New Direction’. Russell was the creative force behind the label, acting as producer, engineer and A&R and focussed on developing new solo artists. The most successful of these was Doug Carn, who released four albums featuring his wife, Jean Carn, as vocalist. She later changed her name to Jean Carne and became a successful soul singer signed to Gamble and Huff’s Philadelphia International empire.

Singer Kellee Patterson gained notice as the first black Miss Indiana in 1971, before recording ‘Maiden Voyage’, her debut album for the label. Keyboardist Chester Thompson would go on to join Tower of Power and later Santana. The Awakening featured top veteran musicians from Chicago – the only Chicago group signed to the label. Drummer and percussionist Arlington Davis Jr, bassist Reggie Willis, flautist and tenor saxophonist Richard (Ari) Brown and trumpeter Frank Gordon were all members of the Association for The Advancement of Creative Musicians. Trombonist Steve Galloway and Ken Chaney were part of Philip Cohran and The Artistic Ensemble.

This album brings together key tracks from Doug Carn, recorded for Black Jazz Records in the 1970s. Doug Carn is one of the most important (and least recognised) forces in the creation of the canon of 'deep and spiritual jazz music' – full of powerfully emotive intensity, consciouslyuplifting lyricism and addictively beautiful melodies. All of his LPs during this period have since achieved cult classic status, including 'Infant Eyes', 'Adam's Apple', 'Spirit of the New Land' and 'Revelation'. Aside from his songwriting and keyboard skills, many of the tracks here feature the stunning and powerful 5-octave range vocals of Jean Carn (later Carne), his wife at the time. Musicians featured on this album include Alphonse Mouzon, Charles Tolliver, Henry Franklin, Michael Carvin, Walter Booker, Ronnie Laws and others. Aside from Carn’s compositions there are also striking interpretations of music by Lee Morgan, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, McCoy Tyner, Bobby Hutcherson and Wayne Shorter. Black Jazz became one of the defining labels of independent and conscious jazz music in the 1970s, alongside other important labels such as Strata-East and Tribe Records. As well as this Best of Doug Carn release, Soul Jazz Records are also releasing a Best of Black Jazz Records collection at the same time.

For the 25th Anniversary of Lightning Bolt, Thrill Jockey is reissuing Lightning Bolt’s pivotal album Wonderful Rainbow, originally released in 2003 on Load Records. Lightning Bolt will be releasing a collaborative album with OOIOO this spring. A guiding hand came through producing 2025's “Clandestine” EP with singer Anysia Kym, which gave her the experience of a more 'pop' setting and the tools and insight to work her instrumentals into more conventional shapes; a shift from club driven sounds and winding instrumentals into more precise song forms. Loraine’s production is stripped to the bone, soundscapes of clicks and glitches inspired by Aoki Takamasa, Ryoji Ikeda, and the early-00s Clicks & Cuts school. Here, often with not much more than sparse keyboard chords to fill in with subtle colouring, she uses the space around the sounds and vocals to draw the listener in to a succinct and direct album, her most confident yet. Guest contributors include vocalist Sydney Spann on “In a Rut”, Alan Sparkhawk (Low) on downcast anthem “Peak Again”, Miho Hatori (Cibo Matto) on “Flatline”, Anysia Kim on “Score”, and Tirzah on “Habits and Patterns”. Finally her old spar, the rapper Le3 bLACK returns to spit fire with the jazz-indebted track “Ending Us All” with Fyn Dobson backing on tumbling drums.

SLEEPY CAT RECORDS TRIPPERS & ASKERS TRIED TO DO’S Tried To Do’s is the second full length album from Trippers & Askers - the songwriting and recording project of Jay Hammond. Drafts of this record started as early as 2019. The initial idea was a Parable of the Talents concept album to follow 2021’s Parable of the Sower concept album Acorn and/or an album about Hammond’s hometown of Jackson, TN. Many moves, much traveling and many losses later - the loss of his future child, the loss of his grandmother, the near loss of his father in law, and the hit of hurricane Helene in his adopted hometown of Asheville, NC - this record became a record about loss. It’s a record about ways of mourning, ways of “re-membering”, both with the family in which Hammond was raised as a child and the family of which he has come to inhabit multiple roles as an adult. In many ways, this album is a litany of things Hammond has tried to do: I’ve tried to learn many ways of coming home through the teachings of Lama Rod Owens (Seven Homecomings). I’ve tried to find balance and intimate care in an unbalanced and uncaring world (Closeness). I’ve tried to accept my demons, my family’s demons, my ancestor’s demons (Prologue, Kin, Waterhole). I’ve tried to sit with grief (The Old Churchyard). Through the teachings of Thich Nhat Hanh, I’ve tried to welcome loss, to understand that nothing, and no one, is ever truly gone. (No Coming, No Going). I’ve tried to love myself (Trust) as I move through collective healing (Re-Membering).

Following up their well-received 2025 album Whispers In The Speech Machine, The Laughing Chimes' new collection Behind Your Blue Fields spotlights a fascinating transitional period for the band during the creation of "Whispers...," as the they expanded their pastoral, paisley jangle into darker, post-punk tinged territory. "“I am only interested in people engaged in a project of self-transformation," Susan Sontag once remarked. Non-sensical, un-user friendly, at times half finished. Camper Van Beethoven’s second album II & III saw the folk-punk of the band’s debut LP morphing into an even wider melting pot of stylistic influences and (un)ironic contradictions, all rolled up into a coherently incoherent collection of some of the band’s most defining songs. Originally released in 1986, the follow up to Telephone Free Landslide Victory did much to develop an already iconoclastic Camper Van Beethoven idiom. II & III ranges from alt-country ballads (“Sad Lovers’ Waltz”) to call-backs to the European folk instrumentals of the debut (“No Krugerrands For David”, “4 Year Plan”). Also featured is the band’s bluegrass-Americana take on Sonic Youth’s “I Love Her All the Time”, feeding their appetite for cover songs. All copies feature a newly revisited collage version of the artwork, designed by Victor Krummenacher using original photos, lithograph prints and leaflets. The CD bonus disc contains material from Camper Van Beethoven shows supporting R.E.M. on their Life’s Rich Pageant tour. This audio was mostly recorded at the Lincoln, Nebraska show from October 10th, 1986, but is supplemented with audio from other shows of the tour.

London Jazz Classics originally came out in 1993 - the first album ever to be released on Soul Jazz Records. The album brought together rare and obscure dance tracks in a unique mix of jazz dance and fusion, funk, Brazilian and Latin grooves. The album was ironically titled - none of the music was from London, none of the music was traditionally classified as jazz, and all of the tracks were at the time practically unknown to most people. Instead these were tracks that were filling dancefloors in a nascent jazz dance scene in London being created by a small group of DJs – Paul Murphy, Gilles Peterson, Sylvester, Patrick Forge and a few others. As demand for these rare groove jazz tracks grew, previously unknown records such as Alive’s ‘Skindo Le Le’, Doug Richardson’s ‘Salsa Mama’, Carlos Franzetti’s ‘Cocoa Funk’ and Emilio Santiago’s ‘Bananeira’ became sort after and even-harder-to-find items with original copies going for £100s of pounds. These tracks became part of the soundtrack to this jazz dance scene which has now spread across the world. This music paved the way for the arrival of many of the UK’s new wave of current artists such Shabaka Hutchings, Nubya Garcia and Ezra Collective who today offer a uniquely London sensibility of fusing jazz with wide-ranging cultural influences – everything from afrobeat to soul. London Jazz Classics was the first album to bring this jazz dance music featured here to a wider audience. More than 30 years since its initial release Soul Jazz Records are releasing this new 2026 edition, bringing the music once more to a new generation of listeners.

Kaiso Power is a collection of rare jazz, calypso and percussive gems from Trinidad and Tobago from the revolutionary generation of the 1970s, bringing radical new political vision and reclaiming ancient spiritual consciousness through music.
OVERVIEW: At the dawn of the 70s a shift was taking place all around the world. The streets of Port of Spain thronged with Black Power marches, trade union demonstrations and Carnival protest bands - one epicentre in a growing global exchange of ideologies and strategies among Pan Africanist circles in Jamaica, Guyana, London, New York, Montreal, Lagos, Accra and beyond. And when the meetings were over, the revolution moved to the cramped secret dance halls, the Carnival fetes, the steelband yards. The music always had a sharp edge. Searing commentary has always been part of the various types of music in Trinidad, and in the absence of lyrics, the defiant use of the drum maintains the resistance, as well as the re-framing of the playing of European instruments to the needs of the message. Lancelot Layne, Delano Abdul Malik De Coteau, Andre Tanker, Clive Zanda, Mansa Musa were more than artists, they were teachers, community workers and advocates for justice. These recordings are as raw as an all night Carnival jam, the horns loud, the percussion ringing out, the bass dripping with joy and rebellion. Under the modern influences is a solid rhythm, an unbroken connection to Africa, the songs and keys and cadences brought across the middle passage. These songs are a peep into the untapped treasures of a revolutionary generation, looking at the world with fresh eyes and believing that music was a central part of the mission to build consciousness and regain confidence.

DUCKS LTD. MODERN FICTION Toronto’s Ducks Ltd. (formerly Ducks Unlimited), the bright jangle-pop duo of Tom McGreevy (lead vocal, guitar, bass, keyboards) and Evan Lewis (guitar, bass, drum programming), accomplish the impossible. The pair craft songs that play to very specific inspirations without drowning underneath them—immediately evidenced on their critically acclaimed EP, Get Bleak, and sharpened on Modern Fiction, their debut LP. “The Servants, The Clean, The Chills, The Bats, Television Personalities, Felt,” Evan rattles off. “Look Blue Go Purple is one I reference a lot with our production.” Echoes of ‘80s indiepop abound, but they never overwhelm. This is not a nostalgic record, after all, nor is it a derivative one. Instead, across 10 cheery-sounding songs, Ducks Ltd. explore contemporary society in decline, examining large scale human disaster through personal turmoil (hence the title, taken from a university course called Gnosticism and Nihilism in Modern Fiction, influenced by Graham Greene novels. Bookish indie fans, look no further.) Writing the album was intimate. Tom drafted the nucleus of a song on an unplugged electric guitar and brought it over to Evan’s apartment, where the pair sat in his bedroom, placing percussive beats from a drum machine under nascent melodies, passing a bass back and forth, adding organs and bridges where necessary. “It’s computer music trying extremely hard not to sound like computer music,” Tom jokes. Fearful that limited and expensive studio time would kneecap the project creatively, eroding their charming naivete, the pair re-recorded the album in a storage space owned by Evan’s boss. Ornamentation through collaboration followed: there’s Aaron Goldstein on Pedal Steel in the Go-Betweens’ “Cattle and Cane”-channeling interlude “Patience Wearing Thin,” Eliza Niemi on cello (“18 Cigarettes,” a song loosely inspired by a 1997 Oasis performance of “Don’t Go Away”), and backing harmonies from Carpark labelmates The Beths (on an ode to friendship at a distance, “How Lonely Are You?,” “Always There,” and on the sped-up Syd Barrett stylings of “Under The Rolling Moon.”) While in his native Australia due to covid-19, Evan worked closely with producer James Cecil (The Goon Sax, Architecture in Helsinki) on Modern Fiction’s finishing touches—at one point, in the mountains of the Macedon Ranges in Victoria, recorded a string quartet (featured on “Fit to Burst,” “Always There,” “Sullen Leering Hope,” “Twere Ever Thus,” “Grand Final Day.”) It’s danceable, depressive fun, with some relief: in “Always There” and “Sullen Leering Hope,” Modern Fiction’s faithful heart. “There’s a tendency in my writing, because of my world view, to be very bleak.” Tom explains. “A quality I don’t always see in myself and really appreciate in others is the courage to go on.” And yet, the record manages resiliency—enough for pop fans to fall in love with.

Listen, having lived life as an atheist-spiritualist and progressive pop composer/performer, Cole desired to find his own kind of devotional music, devoting himself to the cause that became this album. But it took more than that in the end. The Black Door required playing in aspects of traditional genre formats like ‘country,’ ‘blues,’ ‘finger-style,’ ‘gospel,’ ‘soundtrack,’ ‘ambient,’ and Cole is adept at them all, mixing and matching modes and vibes. Adding to that a cosmic spray of full circle/circus leap consciousness, The Black Door flew open! Initially conceived as solo acoustic guitar tunes, in the studio the songs demanded the dynamics of an acoustic ensemble (a departure from his work with Kamikaze Palm Tree and Sharpie Smile). This was key. The arrangements form intricate passages for acoustic, electric and lap steel guitars, acoustic/ electric bass, piano, drums, percussion, violin, viola, horns, woodwinds and synthesizers. Playing with Cole are violinist Laena Myers, along with Garret Lang, Dylan Hadley, Sofia Arreguin, Robert Earl Thomas, Michael Sachs, Sarah Safaie, Kilan Thorns and Cesar Hernandez PLUS Cesar Maria, who mixed and co-produced with Cole. The music of The Black Door is honest modern folk—west coast folk!—with a rad amount of odd psyche laced within. A presence in the production ecosystem of ominous (but friendly) ghost theater, elegant framing for a perfectly civilized, surreal mystery and exquisite, acoustic folk-chamber puzzle. And lo! Cole Berliner’s solo debut is rich-grained instrumental parlor music, organically growing on in the speakers and ears beyond, an album after our own hearts in the challenger tradition of Bert Jansch’s Avocet, Marc Ribot’s Saints and Jim O’Rourke’s Bad Timing. As Cole brings a succession of new moods and qualities to the true spirit of the thing, The Black Door opens up an album-length sequence of musical transformation.
