able to see each other face to face and bounce ideas off each other, or listen collectively to a new record someone has just found really started to take its toll the deeper we got into it, but we were lucky enough to be able to keep working and be it through zoom, emails, smoke signals, carrier pigeons, we were still able connect and chat to people about our music and get excited about what we had coming up.

How did you personally get started in the music industry?

Dave: I played in a band called The Last Peach and we started getting some interest from people in London. I got a job in System Records in Hebden Bridge around the same time. A local journalist called Mark Hodkinson used to come in and we shared a love of the Pixies and Kitchens Of Distiction and he joined The Last Peach. Mark had set up a music publicity firm called Pomona and I asked him if I could work for free a couple of days a week just for the experience.

This turned into a full-time paid music publicist job. After around 6 years I left to set up my own music publicity company, In House Press and around the same time heard this amazing demo by a student journalist I’d got to know (James Rutledge). His Pedro EP became Melodic’s first release. I sent the record to my publicity contacts and The Face gave it an excellent review and John Peel played it about 5 times on radio 1 (2 or 3 times at the wrong speed).

What is the meaning behind the name for the label?

Dave: I’ve always had a thing about melody in music, whether that be The Smiths or Boards of Canada. Someone once joked that reviewers would often use the term ‘melodic and tuneful’ so we called one of our compilations in the early days A Roomful Of Tuneful.

How has the label changed since it started?

Andy: When the label first started it was just David, and then I came in as an intern, so it was a pretty small operation back then. We’ve since grown to six members of staff and usually one or two interns a week, so the scale of the label has increased dramatically. These days we view ourselves more as a holistic music company rather than just a label. We manage artists, have a publishing arm, and even label-manage overseas labels. We also handle a lot of press and radio ourselves, both domestically and abroad. We like to see ourselves as a one-stop shop and aren’t afraid to get our hands dirty — I suppose in that sense we’re keeping the DIY spirit alive somewhat!

What was the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic?

Josh: One of the bigger challenges was navigating who could be in the office and when (within the government guidelines) to keep on top of the mailorder as that train kept rolling. Obviously, not being

What is your stance on color vinyl?

Josh: Personally, I’m not a huge fan of color vinyl (I couldn’t tell you exactly why, I just prefer keeping it trad), but I know that it can be a big thing for collectors and we do find that a lot of new fans of vinyl head straight to the color variants. We tend to always offer black as standard and then we’ll do one color version for an album. There are some incredibly impressive and innovative ways that people are using color and design in their vinyl products and it’s really interesting to watch that evolve, it’s already gone so much further than I could have imagined.

How do you feel about the rising costs of vinyl records? And what about the continued popularity of the CD format?

It’s a tough one isn’t it. Labels obviously need to up their prices to cover the increasing costs of making the records to even make a small bit of profit to send into the next release. Unfortunately, that means that it’s the customers that are taking the weight of that in increased prices in the stores. It’s not something we enjoy having to raise because we want as many people to have access to our records as possible, but for us to be sustainable as a label it’s unfortunately something we have to do. It is something we’re very mindful of though.

I’m sure we could all argue about the difference in audio qualities between vinyl and a CD but they are much cheaper and very convenient access point for a fan to own a physical copy of the record (hopefully forever) and I’m all for that. As long as moves keep being made to make them more environmentally friendly, and that’s really important, then I think it’s a win-win.

What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now?

Andy: The industry is always changing and evolving at pace, but I suppose the somewhat obvious (and maybe boring) answer would be streaming and how it has revolutionized access to music — and the knock-on effects of that, both good and bad. The ability to release music worldwide is now something literally anyone can access, so the sheer volume and speed of the industry has increased massively.

In some ways it’s very democratic; music can blow up organically without any label involvement at all. On the other hand, it can be very tough to cut through the noise.

Now’s your chance Andy: Of course we have to shout out Piccadilly Records here in Manchester, who are fantastic and always big supporters of the label. Same goes for Resident down in Brighton, who spearhead the Dinked editions. If you’re ever passing through Manchester, I’d recommend King Bee in Chorlton for £1 dancefloor 12”s, and Sifters in Burnage, who still price second-hand classic records at £3.50!

While Sun Ra never made an "Exotica record," such tracks are mixed in his LPs alongside idiosyncratic space jazz, post-bop, electronic freakouts, and his other sonic experiments. Never an easy categorical fit, anyone who says "File Under: Jazz" doesn't understand the stylistic breadth of Sun Ra's recorded legacy. It's a rhapsodic pandemonium of Afro-centric rhythms, Latin beats, ostinato grooves, and unissued tunes!

“Vast,” the fourth studio album from Vermont’s Wet Tuna to make its way to vinyl and first since 2022, presents a wide-screen slab of irreverent, playful psychedelia that could have only come from the hands / brain / interstellar groove telescope of Matt “MV” Valentine. Fresh from her critically acclaimed collaboration Clay recorded with cult electronic artist Matthew Herbert, Momoko steps forward in her own right for the first time with her remarkable debut solo album.

Momoko has long been one of the UK electronic and jazz scene’s best-kept secrets. A self-taught drummer, producer, songwriter, and vocalist, she has brought her unique touch to collaborations with Alabaster DePlume, Matthew Herbert, Coby Sey, Tirzah, and Nadeem Din-Gabisi (her musical foil in An Alien Called Harmony). Extensive touring behind the drum kit, at the keys and in front of the mic have honed her compositional and production instincts.

With Momoko, Gill emerges into the spotlight with an album that is entirely her own. Throughout, you can hear the stylistic flavours of jazz musicians as much as singer-songwriters, experimental artists and electronic producers.

It's a sound that crosses borderlines, pulling everything from Brazilian samba to southern soul to British rock & roll into its orbit. On Don't Call Me Baby, Sabine filters those influences through the lens of her Haitian heritage and her music community of New Orleans, creating a debut album that's every bit as multi-faceted as the woman who wrote its songs.

The daughter of first-generation Haitian immigrants, Sabine was raised in the suburbs of New York City, where she grew up alongside her sister Leyla McCalla (Sons of Our Native Daughters, Carolina Chocolate Drops). "We had open-minded parents who encouraged us to play an instrument from an early age," she remembers. Introduced to chamber music at an early age, Sabine began playing classical violin in orchestras, music camps, and conservatory classes as an 8 year old. Back at home, she filled her head with Motown classics, girl group hits, Bob Marley albums, Beatles standards, and Haitian folk music. It was a wide constellation of sound that spanned more than a half century, and Sabine made it all her own, drawn to the connections binding everything together.

Don't Call Me Baby shines a light on those connections. The follow-up to her critically-acclaimed Folk EP, whose pre-war sound earned her a slot at the Newport Folk Festival in 2019, the album transcends genre and generation, creating a raw, rich mix of country, R&B, folk, and soul that exists on its own timeline. Co-produced by Sam Doores of the Deslondes and featuring a cast of New Orleans’ most spirited and gifted (including guest vocals from Riley Downing, Leyla McCalla, and The Lostines), Sabine McCalla reaches beyond her beloved hometown Americana scene with Don't Call Me Baby, building a bridge between the world-spanning sounds that have captured her attention.

NEW BLACK VINYL - ORIGINALLY RELEASED MARCH 10, 2023 Originally from Lake Charles, Louisiana but “naturalized by the Natural State” as a teenager, Dylan Earl (or “Dearl” as he’s come to be known) has been active in the Arkansas underground country scene for over a decade, first as a founding member of the alt-country band Swampbird and then as a solo performer and songwriter. Alongside his friends and contemporaries Willi Carlisle and Nick Shoulders, Dylan has been heavily involved in carving out space for socially conscious Country Music in the Mid-south region and beyond.

On I Saw the Arkansas, Dearl guides us through the many wacky stories, close encounters with the law, dizzying romances, and endless highways from this chapter of his life. Juxtaposed, but perhaps not entirely in opposition, he describes the calm yet wild beauty of the Natural State and the inspiration and contemplation he draws from his home. Longtime fans of Dylan’s work will recognize the trademark blend of honkytonk, southern rock, and traditional country which has defined his sound for years: rowdy rambling tunes like “Buddy” and up-beat two-steps like “Fever,” full of energy and swagger. On this latest recorded effort, Dearl blazes new sonic trails, like the borderline psychedelic romp of “White Painted Trees” and the meditative and somber title track, a dreamy waltz which paints a picture of the spirits of the narrator, the Arkansas Traveller, and beloved Southern poet Frank Stanford, watching their bodies float by from atop a levee on the Arkansas river.

He uses it to tell his story earnestly, and not without laughing at himself a little bit along the way. Marc Riordan and Jon Leland make music together under the name Ragger. Each are multi-instrumentalists and avid collaborators in their wide artistic practices: Riordan performed and collaborated with the likes of The Cairo Gang, The Red Krayola, Xiu Xiu, Owls, and Joshua Abrams before moving from his longtime home of Chicago to LA, while Leland performed with Janka Nabay and the Bubu Gang, Glasser, Amen Dunes, Steve Gunn, and Skeletons before moving from New York to LA and then to the Bay Area to begin a career in video game development. The two began collaborating in 2017 after being invited by Cameron Stallones to form the current trio lineup of his long-running luminary experimental project Sun Araw, with Riordan handling bass and lead synth parts and Leland on electronic drum kit. They formed Ragger shortly after meeting, performing as a duo for a bi-weekly residency in the front café of the noted experimental venue Zebulon in LA, with a very specific scope of material in mind: the ragtime compositions of Scott Joplin and his contemporaries, presented in synthetic tones for synthesizers and electronic V drums. Hausu Mountain is proud to introduce Ragger to the world with their first album of recordings in this style, Euphonic Sounds.

Riordan’s love of ragtime piano dates back to his early days in Chicago, where he formed the acoustic quartet The Great Crush as a vehicle for close study of the particulars of the rag repertoire, a project that continued for the better part of a decade. Leland first dabbled in early American music as a teenage drummer in an extracurricular Dixieland jazz ensemble, and over the years developed an interest in electronic drum pads and machines. Through these lenses he creates percussion parts for Ragger’s takes on ragtime from a modern, purposefully ahistorical perspective (in the absence of drum parts in any original ragtime music). Drawing inspiration from the Switched-On series of releases by Wendy Carlos and video game music composers like Koji Kondo and Nobuo Uematsu as as the head-spinning prog instrumentals of bands like Horse Lords Cat #: HAUSMO 154 much and Cheer Accident, Riordan and Leland approach the Scott Joplin ragtime songbook without any interest in “reviving” the style or presenting authoritative survey of the music’s history, but rather as a fun opportunity Formats: CD, Tape an to inject their own varied musical interests into the framework of ragtime. In their own words, Ragger’s music embodies “that off-night bar gig where the Tape Edition video game music engine gets to play whatever it wants.”

The idea of a simulated “video game music engine” gets to the heart of the Ragger project, as Riordan and Leland play extremely precise and complicated music with tumbling melodies flecked with ornamented details that spiral over busy percussion patterns - but they present the keyboard and drums in bright electronic voices that wouldn’t be out of place in a Super Nintendo game soundtrack. Marc Riordan’s synths shimmer with glossy detail in the upper register tones and bump with heavy-hitting bass, as the low, mid, and high voices interact in a state of tight counterpoint that highlights the complexity of ragtime as it was originally composed. His attention to detail in synth voice selection and programming positions Ragger as a funhouse mirror reflection of tone-obsessed stalwarts of the experimental underground like Emeralds or Oneohtrix Point Never – not to mention the duo’s participation in Sun Araw as that project continues to dig deeper into synthesis with each new album. With his cascading electronic tom-tom fills and flurries of synthetic woodblocks clicking beneath FM synth cymbal crashes, Jon Leland’s drum performances bring to mind a giant steam-powered calliope instrument with its pistons pumping as innumerable mallets strike row after row of miniature drum heads. Leland describes his kinetic drum style with Ragger as a “play-by-play” reaction on a moment to moment basis to the rhythms presented by the keyboard melodies, with a focus on both maintaining a groove and decorating the space in the mix with all kinds of miniature percussive flourishes, from electronic squishes to 808 kicks to simulated hand drums. This style makes the drums feel like just as much of a lead instrument as Riordan’s synths, as both instrumentalists lock into a tight symbiosis as they work through the winding architectures of their ragtime tune selections.

While Hausu Mountain has always highlighted an interest in “carnivalesque” music, Ragger’s Euphonic Sounds sets the carnival trapeze higher than anything else in the label’s catalog, while also honoring HausMo’s abiding love for 16-bit video game sounds and imagery. For label heads Doug Kaplan and Max Allison, Ragger’s own elevator pitch for their music as “Scott Joplin in Super Mario World” seemed too good to be true on paper – somehow too dialed into the label’s aesthetics to ever land successfully in practice. But guess what? Riordan and Leland nailed it.

Euphonic Sounds overflows with whimsy and joy as much as a brand of casual virtuosity in service of the intricacies of music composed over a century ago. While ragtime might nominally be catalogued closer to “classical music” by today’s listeners, its deep roots weave into the origins of jazz, blues, pop, and dance music. We hear Ragger tease these threads out while transplanting the style into modern tones and ideas from the perspective of the avant-underground, attesting to the passion that the duo has for this music and the lengths they were willing to stretch themselves both mentally and physically to perform it at this level.

‘Every Little Word’ (‘The Old New Me’/’Times Like This’ - 2025 Remaster, Expanded Edition - CD Reissue) - is a comprehensive collection of the best original songs that Slim managed to capture on tape in his basement laboratory, in a recording studio, or on stage. . The set contains his two earliest released songs, his two solo albums in their entirety, demos, alternate versions, and live recordings.

Though both of Slim’s albums have been available digitally, the previously released cd versions of ‘The Old New Me’ and ‘Times Like This’ are long out of print. Now they will now be back with a 2025 Remaster upgrade, plus twenty-two bonus tracks.

Slim Dunlap was the "replacement Replacement" and part of the legendary alternative rock band The Replacements between 1987-1991, featured on their albums ‘Don’t Tell a Soul’ and ‘All Shock Down’.

OVERVIEW “Noregs Vaapen” is the fifth studio album from the legendary Norwegian black metal band Taake, considered by many to be their strongest album. The album saw the band refine their True Norwegian Black Metal sound, while also taking a step further, including some new elements. The album is filled with Hoest’s trademark riffs, melodies and vocals, but also includes more unpredictable parts, more black’n’roll grooves, ice cold mellotrons, and a now legendary banjo solo. The album features classics like the catchy “Nordbundet”, “Myr” and the controversial, anti-religious “Orkan”.

Hoest himself is behind all music, lyrics, instruments and vocals as usual – but the album also features contributions from Taake’s live line-up at the time; Thurzur, V’gandr, Aindiachai and Gjermund. Since the formation of Seven Impale, this young progressive rock band has built up their name playing show in their hometown and forming their own unique sound. Like nebulas coalescing into galaxies, the pieces of OTONOMA emanate hues dense with subtle layers of color folded into gradients, arresting and radiant.

In Japanese the word “Oto” means “sound” and “Ma” refers to the “space” or “interval” between things. So, “Otonoma” literally means “the space between sounds.” In classical usage, “Ma” can also mean “room” which allows a different reading, “a room of sounds”. “I titled the album with the hope that listeners would move through these different spaces of sound as they listen,” Hirano notes. “Like moving through rooms, the album showcases my various sound palettes.” “Illuminance,” a foundational track on the album, has rich textures and a searching modular synth.

“Ame, Hikari” was initially composed for a photo exhibition of Japanese artist Rinko Kawauchi’s work at Fotografiska Berlin and captures the rain (ame) and light (hikari) of Kawauchi’s photos. The stately lone piano of “Rainwalk” offers a minimalist, affecting snapshot of a moment in time while pieces like “Aurora” take a more wide-eyed, macrocosmic view with fluttering electronics and a surging drone.

Throughout OTONOMA, Hirano’s compositions seep over their sonic borders and through the complex intersection of rhythm & tone are an affecting listen. The intersection between sound and space embodies the architecture of this beautiful impressionistic album. Her recordings, from her early work with Date Palms, to the ongoing work with Chuck Johnson in Saariselka, and most definitively with The Patterns Lost to Air, show Jakobsons to be an exceptionally skillful sound sculptor, a musician who knows the value of patience and control.

An artist able to derive maximum impact from her chosen sound elements, the album’s layout is shaped by three primary voices of violin, Fender Rhodes, and Moog Matriarch and was recorded in 2024 in the studio Jakobsons built in Oakland, California, its huge windows overlooking a backyard with olive and palm trees, nesting towhees and hummingbirds.

The Patterns lost to Air was also born of personal change for Jakobsons brought on by the health effects of long covid, as well as an intentional musical shift from drones to working with scores and written music as she leaned in on her classical training, and harmonic writing. It was more than an evolution, it was a need to redefine who and what she was, down to the molecular level, because she could no longer create music in the same way, which became a galvanizing motif for The Patterns Lost to Air. What happens when we release our grip on familiar patterns - in sound, in self, in memory - and allow them to transform in the air around us? How do we move through that to reinvent and renew?

On The Patterns Lost to Air, each piece emerges from a place of necessary restriction, discovering how limitation itself can become a portal to new territories of sound and meaning. The pieces make use of loops and slowly shifting patterns that gracefully decay with time. Through sonic landscapes of Fender Rhodes piano, synthesizers, and strings, the album investigates the space between those patterns like threads of memory, each tone transfiguring and dissolving together. Imagining the forms and shapes that sound takes as its projected into a listening space, and how they are “lost to air” as they morph and decay. This physicality of sound is a theme in her work in general, and this album is directly a conversation on that aspect.

The Patterns Lost to Air’s delicate sounds and intricate harmonies together make for a sweeping shimmering expression. From the ostinato pattern of the synth and the lush strings of the optimistic “Everything Lost Remains” to the dappled Rhodes motifs and washing violins of “Insistence” and “Without You Inside Time,” Jakobsons’ music divines the relief in release and embraces new frameworks. Info: Attending college in Nashville, TN in 2015, Scott Hermo never really pictured himself as a full-time musician when writing and recording songs in various bedrooms. There was no plan, direction or goal. Yet meeting friends John Lewandowski, Tiger Adams, and Noah Miller changed all of that when the songs started to take more form with energy and live drums. Suddenly, there was a live band and like-minded folks with a similar outlook and collective goal to make the best music possible, for no one but themselves. Before ever even playing a show, they finished their debut album in yet another bedroom.

After word of mouth spread, a band was formed so they could play the shows they were offered. --- and with that came a love for playing shows, meeting musicians, digesting more bands, and perfecting their craft.

Formed in Jacksonville, Florida, in the mid-1980s, the Beggar Weeds were a trio who chased the offbeat—driving miles out of their way on tour to visit strange museums and roadside oddities. Their music reflected that same fascination with the eccentric: a jangly mix of R.E.M., the almost-falling-apart-ness of the Replacements, and the rumbling melodicism of Hüsker Dü, filtered through Southern folk and punk grit. Their lone 1988 EP, Sure Pants Alot, captured their raw, fast, and fiercely melodic sound—equal parts humor, heartbreak, and rural storytelling.

Michael Stipe of R.E.M. became an early fan, co-producing unreleased sessions that now appear on their career retrospective Tragedy in U.S. History, out February 20, 2026 via Strolling Bones Records. Their inclusion marks the first time these songs have been officially compiled, making the release a crucial document of Southern indie rock. Today, Tragedy in U.S. History stands as a unique fusion of sounds and personalities—the missing link between the 1980s underground and the alt-country movement of the 1990s. Though they split in 1992, the Beggar Weeds’ blend of punk energy, country heart, and oddball vision remains a hidden cornerstone of Southern indie rock.

nicole mccabe ‘color theory’ Nicole McCabe announces her solo album, ‘Color Theory’ as an extension of her ever-evolving curiosity for the blending of the art of jazz and improvisation with new sounds and technologies.

“Color Theory” unfolds as a vibrant, rhythmic canvas—an invitation into a syncopated journey of sound and self. Across eleven tracks, Nicole explores a spectrum of eclectic grooves, lush textures, and memorable melodies that linger long after the last note fades. Recorded live at Brooklyn’s renowned Bunker Studios, the album blends dynamic ensemble performances with Nicole’s signature solo looping and improvisational flair. The result is a vivid body of work that celebrates artistry, mastery, and, above all, the endless possibilities of color in sound.

The project is brought to life by Kanoa Mendenhall (bass), Eliza Salem (drums), Yvonne Rogers (piano) and some special guests as well as produced by the great Jason Moran. It is a showcase of true mastery on each instrument and a love for creating an experience behind each composition.
