BROOKE FRASER

FLAGS

BLURB

Flags is a dreamy, alternative-pop collection that showcases her agile soprano, lilting melodies, and knack for telling her stories through the lives of vibrant characters on songs like “Betty,” (co-written with Switchfoot’s Jon Foreman and Ben West of Detroit indie duo The Real Efforts of Real People), “Crows and Locusts,” “Jack Kerouac,” and “Ice on Her Lashes.” “I’ve never used as many characters or as much narrative in my songwriting as I have on this record,” Fraser says. “On my previous albums [2003’s What To Do With Daylight and 2008’s Albertine], I was singing completely as myself, which is why I think I got so burnt out from touring. Albertine was inspired by incredibly significant events and people and every time I’d sing I’d go back to that moment where my heart was ripped open. So singing such heavy songs nearly every night for three years took a toll. On Flags, it’s still me speaking, but it’s me speaking through the voices of different characters and their stories. It’s more survivable.” The album also features a co-written duet with Aqualung’s Matt Hales, titled “Who Are We Fooling”.

SELLING POINTS • Brooke’s 2008 album Albertine became a US best seller including top 5 on iTunes and the Billboard top 100. To date it has sold over 60,000 copies in the US alone. • On her last US tour in 2008 she sold out theaters in many major markets including in LA and NYC – for other key markets see tour dates below. • Awareness of Brooke continues to grow at a rapid pace with over 10 million views of her videos on youtube and over 80,000 ardent facebook friends (mostly based in US). • Brooke, who now lives in Los Angeles, will undertake extensive touring in support of Flags starting in Houston at the House of Blues on November the 9th (see dates below). A second tour will commence in March 2011 and include a stop at Austin’s SXSW. • On August 2nd we announced the new album and tour including this video http://vimeo.com/13770823. On August 21st we will release the first of a weekly series of webisodes filmed while Brooke was making the album. • Also around that time the video for Something in the Water will be serviced across the net and terrestrial outlets. • A full array of marketing tools is available including banners, posters, tour flyers, bio, press release and photos. 10.19.10

WARPCD196 / WARPLP196

What is Shobaleader One? Shobaleader One is my band. Last summer a bunch of kids got in contact with me. They were talking about forming an ensemble, which I thought was a ridiculous idea but I was impressed by their perseverance so we met up. Their idea was that they wanted the 'fantasy group' I had written about in connection with 'Just A Souvenir' to become a real entity that would record and tour. So we had a go at doing some recording and the story so far is documented on this record. What are the aims of Shobaleader One? The overall aim is to articulate my music through the medium of a band. I always thought that a band would be a limiting thing... Actually it has made it quicker because I'm not trying to be four people simultaneously anymore. I'm not over-explaining anything to them as they've got strong ideas of their own and I want to hear that in the final results. How would you describe the sound of Shobaleader One? We are playing my compositions, so in that respect it relates quite clearly to what I've done before, but as I'm not doing much playing or programming it is sonically quite different. It sounds more focused. Lots of musos end up just making their music a platform to display their skill. The great thing about this lot is that although they are some of the best players I've seen, they keep 99% of that hidden and just use it to give a very acute delivery of the songs.

Format: 2xLP + MP3

The basic premise at the outset was 'space pop' -a utopian pop music hallucination. It's a crypto-protest against the affectation of knowing indifference in urban life and its corollary in music. I've always wanted to sabotage coolness as for me music is about laughing and crying, not about standing around smoking cigarettes. NO EXPLICIT LANGUAGE

Swarming hymns of 2nd generation psychedelic pop mastery, The Soft Boys' two most influential and groundbreaking albums are finally back in print via Yep Roc Records. Main man Robyn Hitchcock, along with demon guitarist Kimberley Rew, bassist Matthew Seligman and drummer Morris Windsor manage to bottle '60s guitar pop, shake it up with caged teenage fury and cut it all with a healthy dose of lyrical levity. A Can of Bees and Underwater Moonlight -- seen as fatally un-hip when originally released – would go on to be seen as seminal albums and become catalysts for ‘80s jangle pop and college rock, directly inspiring band’s like R.E.M. and The Flaming Lips.

Key Facts • Long out of print seminal releases from The Soft Boys complete with bonus material and original artwork • Each album comes with download codes for a total of nearly 40 bonus tracks. All rare, many unreleased!

ighties punk music valley doll Josie Cotton returns to her roots on Pussycat Babylon. The album's first single, "Johnny, Are You Queer," is a dance floor remake of her 80's new wave hit. New remixes of the track by Donni Hotwheel and Barry Harris are already taking American and European clubs by storm. "Pussycat Babylon is the dance-y electro-pop record my fans have been begging me for," says Cotton. "It stirs and shakes together bubbly top-40, techno, Euro-trash disco and Japanese new-wave into an exploding post-punk cocktail." Josie spent two years in the studio making Pussycat Babylon, with the help of legendary keyboardist Paul Roessler, who co-produced the album. Other notable contributing artists are Dead Kennedy's producer Geza X who plays guitar, Princess Frank on drums, and original Black Flag member Kira Roessler on bass. Most recently, Josie Cotton has been busy reconnecting with her fans, making appearances at pride events across the country, including recent performances at New York City, Los Angeles and Toronto Gay Pride Events. Beginning in October, Josie Cotton will embark on an international tour to promote the new album.

The Thermals latest LP, Personal Life, explores (as the title implies) personal relationships, and the endless contradictions found therein. The second and latest single from Personal Life, "Never Listen To Me", embodies this theme wholly, the title a warning to a potential new lover. The verses are darkly cautionary - "Follow my light/Follow my lead/Never listen to me". I will show you the way, and you will want to follow, but no matter how long the journey, eventually I will betray you. The chorus, although melodically uplifting, is lyrically downright heartbreaking - "I'll give you all that I have/I'll tell you everything/Love me all of my life/Never listen to me". Accept me, but don't trust me. Love me at your own risk. Please listen to this song. But you know, don't listen to it. So yeah, contradictions. Musically, "Never Listen To Me" and its B-side "There Is Always A Reason" find The Thermals treading new ground. Unlike the power-chordpowered raucous sing-alongs The Thermals are famous for, these songs are driven primarily by the rhythm section, with the guitar and vocals taking on a more subtle, subdued role. Like most Thermals songs, on the surface they appear quite simple. But these songs expand and collapse in new exciting ways, and are a good indication of where The Thermals are heading.

Welcome, Ninja Tune’s latest signing: the one and only Eskmo, AKA Brendan Angelides, a native of Connecticut now based in San Francisco. Widely heralded within the community as one of the most original of a new wave of electronica artists, his eponymous debut album for Ninja Tune finally offers Eskmo a canvas broad enough to create his first masterpiece. Embracing and exploring glitch, dubstep and R’n’B, and layering his own ethereal vocals into the dreamy mix, it’s a fine showcase for everything that has made Eskmo such a whispered-about talent. Angelides has been making tracks as Eskmo since 1999, recording a series of tracks and remixes for labels like Planet Mu and Warp in recent years, and releasing two acclaimed singles, ‘Hypercolor’ and ‘Angus Dei’, on his own Ancestor imprint in 2009. Eskmo’s won the patronage of fellow Ninja-artist, the legendary Amon Tobin, with whom he’s collaborated as Eskamon, while Flying Lotus hand-picked this kindred spirit to play his Brainfeeder Sessions.Via these channels, he was discovered by Ninja Tune, who swiftly invited Eskmo to join their hallowed ranks, and release a debut album. The first release on the label following Ninja Tune’s 20th Anniversary box set signals a brave new chapter for this artist, and for electronica itself. Dreamy, haunting, full of ghostly funk and inventive sonics, Eskmo serves up electronica with a most human heart. "Really some of the best production I've heard in recent times." Amon

NEW RELEASES FOR 19h OCTOBER 2010

THE PIPETTES - Earth Vs The Pipettes

FORMAT - CD /LP LABEL - Fortuna POP! UPC - CD: 5060044170775 / LP: 5060044170874 CATALOG # - FPOP92CD / FPOP92LP LIST PRICE - CD $15.99 /LP $21.99 For Fans Of: Abba, Chic, Studio 54, Philly Soul, The Human League, Motown. // "(Stop The Music)…has the sort of chorus that makes you go a little bit wobbly and misty-eyed and we like it very much indeed” Popjustice (Song Of The Day) // The Pipettes were never your typical pop band and now they‟re back to prove it. They‟ve put the polka dot dresses on ice, brought the boys out of the shadows and had a change in the girl department too. Their musical roots of sculpted, self-confessed, unabashed pop remain intact, but with a fresh new take. The release of The Pipettes eagerly anticipated second album „Earth Vs The Pipettes‟. Written with the idea of imagining what a disco in space would sound like, the record is an exploration of what might happen if all the genres and styles that have set the dance floor going for the last fifty years were loaded onto a rocket and fired into the stars. What would Motown‟s transition as Marvin Gaye and Diana Ross started to veer into Philly Soul and the emerging compositions of Larry Levan sound like if that development had happened on Mars?

MARC BOLAN — Twopenny Prince

FORMAT - CD LABEL - Easy Action UPC - 5060174950650 CATALOG # - EARS027 LIST PRICE - 2CD: $23.99 Unreleased versions of some classic Marc Bolan songs. Hit singles Ride a White Swan , Hot Love ,Jeepster and Telegram Sam appear in rare studio jamming sessions or live broadcasts. • Bonus disc features previously unheard recordings of Marc and Mickey running through tracks that would appear on their eponymous T.Rex album.

VARIOUS —BUBBLING UNDER VOLUME 1

(32 Tracks That Bubbled Under The Billboard Charts 1961 – 1964) FORMAT - CD LABEL - Rare Rockin Records UPC - 0793573647801 CATALOG # - RRR1029CD LIST PRICE - CD: $19.99 Welcome to Bubbling Under volume one, Our first volume of a new series focusing on oldies that reached the bottom of the Billboard charts from the early 1960s. Each Track on this fantastic compilation reached between 101 and 140 on the US Billboard charts from 1961 through to 1964. Of course, All of these songs should have been and could have been big hits, proving just how Important the “Bubbling under” charts were in the day to help promote new songs and this also shows that a Top 100 was not merely enough to showcase the amount of great songs that were recorded during the early 1960‟s. It must be noted, many big name artists are featured on this package showing that even the more popular artists of the period could not always crack the Top 40 all the time and yet any of these so called rarer songs could have easily charted higher then the Bubbling Under charts and Rare Rockin‟ Records has now showcased a fantastic array of these “should – a- Been” hits.

FOPS —YETH YETH YETH

FORMAT - CD /LP LABEL - Monotreme UPC - CD: 5055300317766 / LP: 5055300317773 CATALOG # - MONO47CD/MONO47VNL LIST PRICE - CD: $15.99 / LP:$23.99 Fops is a collaboration between lyricist Chadwick Donald Bidwell of Ral Partha Vogelbacher and singer Dee Kesler of Thee More Shallows. Taking their musical cues from the syncopated electronic figures of Krautrockers such as Cluster and Faust, and the propulsive, brooding pop of the bands they grew up listening to in the „80s, the duo recorded two albums: Album 1, „Yeth Yeth Yeth‟, will be released in October 2010, and Album 2, „Priests in them Caves‟, will follow in early 2011. Both LPs are novels at heart, investigating the possible and impossible, gaudy and fantastical, mundane and downright depressing pasts and futures of a single protagonist. In the world of Fops, Kesler is the narrator, telling stories in Bidwell‟s singular lyrical style. Prepare to dance whilst scratching your head. The vinyl format comes on 180 gm audiophile vinyl and includes a free promo CD of the album.

STREET DATE 10.19.10

TRACK LISTING: The role of instrumental albums in rock has changed quite a deal over time. While it would be unusual now to see one on the top 40 as they were in the 50’s and 60s they have not disappeared from the scene. Rather they have gone underground. Instead of being dance music as they were in the beginning of the rock era they now set moods more like pre-rock jazz combos. Bands like Mogwai and other math rock bands have also managed to make instrumental albums that captured critical attention leading to a re-examination of instrumental rock and it’s possibilities. The two forces behind Desertshore begin their version of this re-examination from quite different directions. Chris Connolly is a classically trained pianist who studied with Julian White and Sharon Mann in California. He is also a biochemist graduating from UC Berkeley. Phil Carney’s history is much more from the rock world. He played guitar in San Francisco legends, Red House Painters and later, Sun Kil Moon. Chris's early influences were atmospheric UK bands, especially from the label 4AD such as Dead Can Dance, The Cocteau Twins and The Cure. Phil’s are once again more from the rock arena but also more structured and song based; as in Bowie, David Sylvian, Alice Cooper and Neil Young. This melding of rock and classical, atmosphere and craft defines Desertshore. Their shared interest in ethereal sounds and the fact that neither was afraid of allowing the music to lead them in whatever harmonic direction seemed right, unites them. Phil and Chris had been collaborating for a few years before deciding to move to the studio and record the compilation of material that became Drifting Your Majesty. Other Bay Area musicians such as drummer Dave Muench came in to play on the record, which was recorded at Hyde Street Studios in San Francisco with overdubs completed in Alameda, CA. Phil’s band-mate from Red House Painters, Mark Kozelek, co-produced with Desertshore and it was mastered by John Golden. The result is a superb album of shimmering guitar notes and resonant piano that wanders dreamlike though a series of soundscapes. By the time the listener reaches the title track they are immersed in a tour de force of subtle distortion and noise. Coming off this crest the album slips through a series of changes that include folk, country, Middle Eastern and lounge influences. In fact, the lack of stylistic definition is Drifting Your Majesty’s single most defining feature. In the end these are fine musicians extending themselves without regard to the confines of genre and the results are entrancing.

The Volebeats’ new album is an epic double-LP affair, recorded in the heart of Detroit, Michigan. Throughout these 19 new songs, the group that Ryan Adams once called “the best American band” are in top form, proving themselves to be more prolific than ever. The Volebeats is a definitive work from a favorite band of many musicians and critics, and it’s their first new album since 2005’s Like Her LP. This new self-titled LP is the product of a new phase of intense songwriting and recording activity for the band. Singer Jeff Oakes and guitarist Matthew Smith wrote most of the songs. The new album was recorded on analog 8-track tape. Instead of booking time in a conventional studio, the sessions were arranged in a house not far from the old Motown studio. The Volebeats were determined to make the definitive Volebeats album, and they knew from the start that the record would be at least as long as Exile on Main St. or the Beatles’ white album. The Volebeats unfolds like a movie. It’s an AM radio-influenced American urban dreamscape, where non-stop hooks propel introspective lyrics across a warm analog atmosphere. There’s a cover of a great pop song written by Gene Simmons of Kiss, “See You Tonight”, as well as the Kinks’ “This is Where I Belong”. The other 17 tracks are all originals, with no filler throughout 67+ minutes.

London’s Michael Gagliano – with a rotating cast of musicians – gives us more lysergic psychedelic Brit pop from The Sails. Previously, Michael’s work as songwriter and producer was met with much critical acclaim by the music press in the UK and Europe, with credits including a 4-star review in Mojo magazine. The Sails deliver sophisticated pop and rock. “I’m Only Bleeding” and “Travel” drip with sitars, yet are grounded with rocking rhythm and guitars. In “Dogs”, the Byrds and Hollies meet The La’s in Revolver-esque fashion. The album features both jangly and aggressive guitar attacks throughout, evoking Oasis and Humble Pie, or even Spacemen 3 channeling the Beatles.

As music from the Los Angeles area thrives and swells across the globe, one of it’s most beloved and deeply rooted members steps out with an LP full of infectious melodies, subtle hip-hop and a kaleidoscope of sound. Music for the imagination. Ardour is the debut album by long time running My Hollow Drum, Dublab, and recent Brainfeeder artist, Teebs. Born in New York to Malawi and Barbados origins, Mtendere (pronounced “ten- de-ra”) (Chichewa for “Peace”) Mandowa, is a 23 year-old producer who bounced around the East Coast before finally planting his feet in the Southern California suburb of Chino Hills. A chance meeting with Flying Lotus led to his involvement and joining of the newly founded Brainfeeder collective. Having previously heard from local producers and DJs about this new up and comer, Lotus didn’t hesitate to take Teebs under his wing after hearing some of his earliest beats. Ardour began to bloom. Ardour, two years in the making, is the result of Teebs’ journey thus far. More than the music, it’s the feeling he wants to convey. The idea of hearing something you really love, the moment you know something is really special. Flying Lotus said, “Teebs music sounds like an island vacation...The way Avatar looks.” What’s often said about Teebs’ sound is the warmth it has on the listener. It’s only fitting that a title like Ardour, which is defined as “great intensity and warmth” is used to represent this essential chapter to the ever-growing puzzle of Los Angeles. "Teebs has such a unique and tender magic, as an artist, as a producer and as a human being...He's a gifted and rare kind...” - Mary Anne Hobbs

DAVID MAXWELL & OTIS SPANN CONVERSATIONS IN BLUE

STREET DATE: 10/19/10

NEW BLUES PIANO RECORDING REUNITES DAVID MAXWELL WITH THE LATE GREAT OTIS SPANN David Maxwell and Otis Spann have had a musical connection for nearly half a century. Maxwell first saw Spann perform with Muddy Waters in Paris in 1963 and in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1964. By the late 60s, Maxwell and Spann had become friends and their musical relationship was established. Since Spann’s death in 1970, Maxwell has been identified with Spann’s post-WW II blues piano playing. In CONVERSATIONS IN BLUE, Maxwell collaborates with Spann in a remarkable recording that uses original tracks from the 1960 Candid Records recording OTIS SPANN IS THE BLUES. The original Otis Spann sessions were produced by Nat Hentoff, the writer and civil rights activist, who worked as Candid’s A&R director. According to Maxwell, “Discovering and connecting to Otis Spann in my early twenties changed the course of my musical direction. When Richard Connolly asked me what I thought about doing a new recording based on OTIS SPANN IS THE BLUES—the 1960 Candid record Alan Wilson and I first listened to nearly fifty years ago— I wondered how I could possibly improve upon Spann’s masterful performances. I have my own slant on things. Some of that is informed by my own jazz and world music tastes and predilections. But there’s something about playing blues and feeling deeply rooted in that music that seems to be natural to me--natural in the sense that I was truly able to express myself after hearing Spann and my musical direction was transformed. When we recorded CONVERSATIONS IN BLUE, I wanted to have musical conversations with the person whose music has transformed me. I wanted to create a new way of looking at his music and at my music.” TWO BLUES PIANO GIANTS — TOGETHER • David Maxwell collaborates with classic 1960 Otis Spann recordings • 4 dual-piano tracks (1 feat. Robert Junior Lockwood) • 1 Otis Spann solo track • 7 new David Maxwell solo tracks “David Maxwell plays with fire and soul. He keeps the spirit of Otis Spann alive.” — James Cotton “David Maxwell and Otis Spann are the baddest two piano players I know.” — Junior Wells

SYSTEM AND STATION

A Series of Screws

‘A Series of Screws” is System and Station’s 8th recording and fifth LP. The title speaks volumes about a band that has been crafting and perfecting their epic brand of rock over the past decade. Led by Ryan Heise, whose song-writing acumen is both colossal and melodic, System and Station write songs that are accessible, complex and endearing. With Larry Crane (Tape Op, Jackpot!) at the wheel once again as longtime producer/engineer, “A Series of Screws” can be viewed as both an evolution and a pinnacle in the story of System and Station. With a dedication to honing the songs focusing on what the band does best, ‘A Series of Screws’ delivers plenty of hooks in a tighter package, building on a trajectory that began with 2008’s ‘A Nation of Actors’ and continued with last fall’s ‘I’m Here To Kill’ EP. At the root of it System and Station are a hard-working/touring indie-rock band with plenty of arena-sized moments. Both sides of that equation are fully realized on this album which begins with a nod to Zeppelin in “Pain Pills”, ends with a resonant Pacific Northwest-type groove in the title track, and in between offers the sort of loud/quiet/loud dynamics and guitar heroics (”In The Valley”, “Pardon Me”) that have earned them comparisons to bands like Shiner, Sunny Day Real Estate and Built To Spill. System and Station have been writing and recording their smart, angular Indie-pop/Rock for just over a decade now, and while many bands, music cycles or trends have come and gone in that time, System and Station forge ahead sounding as fresh today as they did with their earnest first recordings from Smart Studios in Madison, WI back in 1998 and 2000.

Bio System and Station formed as a 3-piece in Boise, ID in 1998. From their inception, and through moves to Madison, WI and back to the Pacific Northwest (Portland, OR has been home for the last 8 years) singersongwriter and mainstay RFK Heise has guided them through 5 full-length records and 4 EP’s. Along the way they’ve gone on 20 national tours, owned two very loyal Ford E350 Club Wagons, and have had approximately 12 breakdowns (some in -20 degree weather, some strictly mental). They torched approximately 4 computer monitors in San Antonio, have seen 1 man dressed as a nun physically defile another person in New York, and have been jumped by 1 crackhead and 2 hookers in Knoxville, TN. They crashed at the house of the producer of the Oprah Winfrey show (along w/Caustic Resin) without him knowing it at the time. They’ve had 1 fight with a gang of dj’s in Las Vegas, have been in 1 Texas jail cell, and have been pickpocket by a gypsy in New Orleans. System and Station have played with everyone from Marky Ramone to Shiner, from Alex Chilton to Built to Spill, from Jeremy Enigk to Canyon, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club to The Meat Puppets...oh yea, and also Sloppy Seconds. They’ve met some of the most inspiring and amazing people on planet earth who have taken them in without a second thought, and that is their favorite part of all of this. Discography: System and Station I’m Here To Kill (EP, Oct 2009, Latest Flame, 180-gram vinyl, cd) In The Twilight ( May 2009 re-issue, Latest Flame, cd) A Nation of Actors (August 2008, Latest Flame, cd) Here Is Now (Sept 2006, Latest Flame, cd) In The Twilight (2005, Crustacean, cd) If You Find Me, Let Me Know (EP, 2003 Crustacean/Latest Flame, cd) Compiling the 7” (EP, 2001 Crustacean. cd) Pictures Found In Paragraphs (2000, Crustacean, cd) Prospects of Living Daily (EP, 1999, Mafia Money, cd) Protest Hill The City Echoes Our Hearts (2007, Latest Flame, cd)

Select Reviews: “It’s entirely possible that you missed System and Station’s last album, A Nation of Actors, upon its release earlier in the year. It’s also possible that you’re still unfamiliar with the band even though they’ve been part of the Northwest scene (originally Boise, now Portland) for close to a decade. What’s not possible, however, is you being able to resist the hook-laden guitar rock that System and Station lays down; they’re not afraid to be catchy while they rock, and their expertly honed songs frequently achieve an unpretentious but inspiring grandeur” - Portland Mercury “System And Station formed 12 years ago in Idaho, then moved to Madison, then later settled in Portland, but the band's music changes locations at an even faster rate. Consistently maintaining a rewarding friction between friendly vocal melodies and anxious drums and guitars, albums like 2008’s A Nation Of Actors and 2006's Here Is Now tend to plunge into turbulent post-punk on one track, then into something a bit more catchy or reflective the next. System And Station's restlessness comes out both in this mix of sounds and in the playing—direct, but always taut, and sometimes a little tricky.” The Onion A.V. Club “System and Station has mastered the delicate balance between innovation and listenability, crafting compositions that skimp neither on poppy riffs nor intricate layering. The Portland quartet, returning to the city after a tour supporting its 2009 release I’m Here to Kill, packs a ridiculously large, almost stadium-ready sound into its songs, which range in style from hook-heavy pop nuggets to swelling anthems. It’s all linked together by System’s ability to fill every musical nook without being overly artsy. In fact, you’d be hard-pressed to find another local group that so ably combines mass appeal and artistic expression as satisfyingly.” - Willamette Week

Curl up with someone you love, or enjoy some quiet time alone; The Darkest Night of the Year is the perfect soundtrack.” — Ed Rock, Music Central

In 2004, Leroy Bach (then of the band Wilco) was introduced to Sonny Smith's first album and quickly joined Sonny's band. After a series of underground releases, Sonny was commissioned by Watchword Literary magazine to create his album One Act Plays, which features Neko Case, Edith Frost, Jolie Holland and more. Smith toured the country with Neko Case in the summer of 2006, with Case and Kelly Hogan singing backup in Smith's band. As the SF Weekly puts it, "There's a moment in every Sonny Smith performance when a strange hush falls over the crowd - when everyone's faces are lax from laughing. He swings at them with a depth of meaning ... that hits so hard it can only be a truth."

The debut album from ANDREYA TRIANA 'LOST WHERE I BELONG' showcases Andreya's beautifully soulful voice and fantastic songwriting. All this effortlessly combined with the supurb production of fellow Ninja and master beatmaker SIMON GREEN AKA BONOBO, makes an album of soul music both timelessly classic and utterly contemporary. ROOTS MANUVA MEETS WRONGTOM At last a a new Roots Manuva album is here! 'DUPPY WRITER' comes in the form of a series of re-works of classic Roots Manuva tracks by the talented producer Wrongtom. The project is approached with such conviction and skill that many of the tunes become hard to place in their orignal context, so it really does feel as if these funky, skanking, shuffling little numbers are in fact the ground zero of the Manuva experience, and with artwork from the legendary Tony McDermott it's a thing of beauty. Ninja Tune: 20 Years of Beats & Pieces is the latest in Black Dog Publishing’s popular Labels Unlimited series. To mark the 20th anniversary of this truly unique and groundbreaking record label, established by Coldcut’s Matt Black and Jonathan More, 20 Years of Beats & Pieces includes exclusive interviews with many of the key artists and label staff from Ninja Tune and its successful subsidaries including Big Dada and Counter. Ninja Tune’s impressive roster of artists includes Coldcut, DJ Food, Roots Manuva Amon Tobin, Mr Scruff, Cinematic Orchestra, Bonobo, The Bug, The Heavy, Speech Debelle, The Herbaliser, Spank Rock, Diplo, Daedelus, DJ Vadim, Funki Porcini, Kid Koala, Ty and Wiley. 20 Years of Beats & Pieces is lavishly illustrated with original photographs and illustrations plundered from the deepest depths of Ninja Tune and their artist archives. 20 Years of Beats & Pieces is a stylish and exhaustive survey telling the story of the record label, the artists themselves, their art and the ways in which their influence was and still is felt in larger culture. A truly inspirational tale, beginning with Black and More crossing paths in the mid-80s and going on to form the chart topping Coldcut. When touring Japan 20 years ago, they grew tired of how their staid, uncomprehending major label was manipulating the group and they had the vision and drive to break free and set up Ninja Tune—a label that remains as innovative today as it was then.

Record Store Spotlight

Permanent Records opened their doors in October of 2006. Owners Lance Barresi and Liz Tooley, along with their CEO (Cat Executive Officer), Zaireeka run an eclectic shop filled with vinyl, CDs, cassettes, magazines and more. They chose to open their location in the beautiful Ukrainian Village neighborhood of Chicago where they’d be welcomed by likeminded business and residents alike. Genres available at the store lean heavy on the punk , psychedelic and indie rock with small but wonderful selections of experimental, international, metal, reggae, electronic, soul, funk, hiphop, blues and jazz. The stock is hand picked, the staff is courteous and helpful and they can get you anything you need, usually within a week, as long as it’s in print. Permanent also hosts (almost) weekly in-stores every Saturday at 5pm Spring - Fall. They’ve hosted in-stores from the likes of Francis Harold and the Holograms, Thee Oh Sees, Puffy Areolas, Vivian Girls, the legendary Meat Puppets and most recently Ty Segall with The Royal Baths. They have a great website with an easy to navigate web store www.permanentrecordschiicago.com which offers affordable shipping for both U.S. and international customers. Lastly, their in-house label, aptly named Permanent Records, is running strong and has been since day one. Releases include titles from artists such as Cave, Steel Pole Bath Tub, Nothing People and Cacaw and many many more. They’re quickly becoming one of Chicago’s favorite retail destinations!

When did your store open its doors? We opened October 1, 2006. Most folks thought we were crazy and doomed to fail. It's been nearly 4 years and we're doing alright. What made you decide to venture into music retail? We had worked for other stores for years, stores that were reluctant to embrace vinyl earlier in the decade. It was frustrating. We knew vinyl was the way to go, so we decided to go our own way. We couldn't have possibly predicted the increase in vinyl demand we've seen over the past four years, but the real answer to the question is that it's what we know and love. Everybody should be so lucky to be able to do what they love for a living. How does your store stand out from the rest? We go to great lengths to acquire quality stock, both new and used. There are other things we do well, but we can't give away all our secrets. Come on by and see for yourself sometime. What do you do differently than other to help publicize/promote/market a release? We rely heavily on word of mouth. The bottom line is that good records sell well and bad ones don't, no matter how much promotion one invests in. Well, that's not entirely true. Some terrible records sell really well while some great ones sell miserably. We send our records to a few radio stations, a few zines, and a few blogs. It's worked well for us so far. What types of selections do you tend to cater towards? Good selections. If it's good, we stock it. End of story. Describe your average customer… We don't have any average customers. All of our customers are above average avid music lovers. We're very lucky in that respect. What are your favorite Redeye releases (Top 5)? That's a tough one, but here some of our recent favorites: Raincoats "Raincoats" LP Harvey Milk "A Small Turn Of Human Kindness" LP Melvins / Isis "Split" 12" Boris / Torch "Split" 10" Unwound "A Single History" LP Any tidbits, stories or funny side notes? Come on by and chat us up or check out the monthly Permanent Records Podcast for all the juicy tidbits and hilarious stories.
