JOHN WESLEY HARDING THE SOUND OF HIS OWN VOICE NATIONAL RELEASE DATE: CD/LP: 10.11.2011

Critically acclaimed singer-songwriter John Wesley Harding returns with The Sound of His Own Voice out October 11 on Yep Roc Records. The 13 song set features the all-star King Charles Trio, whose lineup includes John Moen, Chris Funk, Jenny Conlee and Nate Query, all members of The Decemberists, Peter Buck of R.E.M. and Scott McCaughey (The Minus Five, The Baseball Project, R.E.M., Young Fresh Fellows). Rosanne Cash, Laura Veirs and John Roderick (The Long Winters) also lend their vocal talents to the record. In addition to his work as a recording artist, Harding has written three novels under his given name, Wesley Stace. His first book, Misfortune, was an international bestseller. His most recent, Charles Jessold, Considered as a Murderer, was published to rave reviews from The New Yorker, The New York Times and The Huffington Post, among many others. The Los Angeles Times hailed the book as “carefully plotted and brilliantly executed,” while The Wall Street Journal called it “dazzling.” Since his critically acclaimed 1990 debut Here Comes the Groom (lauded by the LA Times as “the first great rock record of the `90s”) John Wesley Harding has recorded 18 records for both major (Sire, Hollywood) and independent (Mammoth, Rhino, Appleseed) labels alike. His novels have been published by Little Brown and Picador in the U.S. "A RENAISSANCE MAN.”-THE NEW YORKER “A GIFTED SONGWRITER, SINGER AND NOVELIST.”-THE WALL STREET JOURNAL “HARDING’S STRENGTH LIES IN HIS POINTED LYRICS AND BITING HUMOR…HE SHARES HIS CYNICAL OBSERVATIONS THROUGH CATCHY, AMUSING MELODIES.” -WXPN WORLD CAFE KEY FACTS: • FEATURING MEMBERS OF THE DECEMBERISTS, PETER BUCK, ROSANNE CASH , JOHN RODERICK, LAURA VEIRS AND SCOTT MCCAUGHEY • SACKS AND CO HANDLING PRESS CAMPAIGN, EXPECTED FEATURES AND REVIEWS WITH NPR, THE WALL STREET JOURNAL, THE NEW YORK TIMES, UTNE READER AND ESQUIRE. • RECORDED IN PORTLAND OR, PRODUCED BY SCOTT MCCAUGHEY AND JOHN WESLEY HARDING • MIXED BY TUCKER MARTINE (THE DECEMBERISTS, MY MORNING JACKET, SPOON, DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE) • CD AND LP COVER ART BY NOTED PHOTO SURREALIST JAMIE BALDRIDGE TRACKLISTING: 01 Sing Your Own Song 02. The Great Escape Of Leslie Magnafuzz

Radio Moscow’s popularity is growing rapidly, as more and more fans tune in to their unique brand of American psychedelic blues rock. Radio Moscow’s music is rooted in the power trio sound of the late sixties and early seventies, and they have been compared to Blue Cheer, Hendrix, Cream, Ten Years After, and similar bands from the golden age of rock’n’roll. The band is the brain child of guitarist/drummer/singer/songwriter Parker Griggs, with Zach Anderson on bass, and Cory Berry handling the drums on stage. They released their first “self-titled” album on Alive Naturalsound records in 2007, produced by Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys. The record received rave reviews and praise worldwide, and in 2009 their second album, the hard-grooving stoner rock album “Brain Cycles” was released, also on Alive Naturalsound.

This, their 3rd album, is their most psychedelic and powerful work to date. It was recorded, mixed, and mastered analog at the legendary Prairie Sun recording in Northern California. In order to achieve the true natural sound they were looking for, the band used vintage Supro, Gibson, and Alamo amps, as well as other off-beat gems, while Parker Griggs sometimes ran his vocals through a tape echo, a Leslie cabinet or an old Gibson reverb tank. The Great Escape of Leslie Magnafuzz is an amazing album that updates an old-school style with craft, passion and plenty of psychedelics. “Does for Blue Cheer what the Black Keys do for 21st century blues: stomps it.” - Austin Chronicle “Refreshingly unpretentious.” - Metromix NYC. “Make no mistake, these boys are the real deal”. - Popmatters “If Cream and Blue Cheer had a baby, it would sound an awful lot like Radio Moscow.” - All Music Guide “Parker Griggs is one of the best young guitarists out there today, if not the best. He’s a prodigy.” - HearYa “Plants its flag firmly in the territory where psychedelic rock, cranked-up blues, and metal meet.” - The Onion ALIVE0126-1 • BOX : 30 GATEFOLD VINYL BAR CODE : 095081012615 SRLP : $19.99 • PSYCHEDELIC BLUES ALIVE0126-2 • DIGIPAK : 30 BAR CODE : 095081012622 SRLP : $15.99 • PSYCHEDELIC BLUES

GENRE : POP/ROCK FILE UNDER: “F” Future Islands Future Islands’ romantic synth sound scales new heights with On the Water, the Baltimore trio’s most ambitious and fully realized statement yet. Built around a song cycle exploring love, loss, and memory, their latest album finds the band continuing to deliver pounding rhythms, swelling melodies, and undeniable hooks - but finding new ways to probe inner space and tug at hearts. Convening in March 2011 in Elizabeth City, NC’s historic, waterfront Andrew S. Sanders House, vocalist Samuel T. Herring, bassist William Cashion, and keyboardist Gerrit Welmers lived together in a space that served as both studio and sleeping quarters. The band used this tranquil retreat to refine their most reflective and mature batch of songs to date, adding new material in the process. What emerged is a lush yet visceral album about two parallel journeys-one physical and one psychological. On the Water’s narrator offers enough detail that their story feels personal, yet open enough that any listener can inhabit each twist and emotional pang as their own. On the Water is an addictive ride that demands repeat listens, eagerly awaiting the test of time. To produce these results, Future Islands fleshed out its sound with the additions of cello, violin, marimba, and field recordings. As with their 2010 breakthrough album In Evening Air, On the Water was produced by frequent collaborator Chester Endersby Gwazda, perhaps best known as producer of Dan Deacon’s Bromst. Noted guests include Wye Oak’s Jenn Wasner, who provides vocals on “The Great Fire,” and Double Dagger’s Denny Bowen on live drums and additional percussion. For all its undeniable weight, On the Water is not a sullen concept album. Every track on the record works both as a contribution to the whole and as a stand-alone pleasure, evident in the insistent throbs, addictive melodies, and stirring vocals of tracks like “Close to None,” “Balance,” and first single “Before the Bridge.”

High Places Original Colors Thrill - 286

High Places is Rob Barber and Mary Pearson. The two create danceable pop music that is both artistic and refined. While very much involved in the music scene of New York and later migrating to Los Angeles, High Places has always been on its own unique musical path. The consistent dialog between the duo over the span of three albums is always through rhythmic and melodic ambient space. The two mix their particular internal rhythms with a long-standing love of UK and US dance sensibilities such as that of UK garage, drum and bass, Chicago/NYC house, Detroit techno, dub reggae, and electro dancehall. The early influence of visceral live experiences of NYC/Philly hip hop of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s is evidenced in the band’s massive sound system. With Original Colors, they are at once pushing forward with much heavier and more complex beats, but also returning to their more gritty, electro-acoustic roots. Recorded in the band’s home studios in Los Angeles, Original Colors dives headlong into driving bass pulses and dynamic rhythms. Rob and Mary’s singular visions are built upon a foundation of syncopated beats, while still adhering to their layered, collaborative style of writing. From the four-onthe-floor dance rhythms of album opener “Year Off” to the more extended and darker phrases of tracks like “Sophia”, the end result is more forceful than ever. Throughout their nearly five years of existence, the band has traveled extensively and performed in a multitude of environments. Whether it’s at the Guggenheim Museum in Manhattan or in an industrial warehouse in Santiago, Chile, their travels are reflected in Original Colors. The album is dotted with sun-drenched references to Australia’s inimitable foliage, the expansive desert of Northern Mexico, and the crystal, blue waters of the Indian Ocean. Such allusions are presented over a bed of swirling stereo rhythms and infectious melodies that are the band’s signature. Each track possesses a specific texture and emotion that serve to create a variegated yet unified album that is held together by the binding force of Mary’s mezzosoprano vocals. The air of naïveté has been peeled away since the first album, and her voice is pushed to the fore; liberated from the dense sonic waves of previous work, and blossoming into a truly melodic instrument. Visual art plays an important role in Mary and Rob’s collaboration. The two make video projections for their stage shows, keep a photo blog that documents their travels (http://hellohighplaces.blogspot.com), and create their own album artwork. In this way and others, Mary and Rob challenge the conventional parameters of a rock band and instead give us a multisensory aesthetic partnership that continually defies expectations.

DEAN & BRITTA 13 MOST BEAUTIFUL: SONGS FOR ANDY WARHOL'S SCREEN TESTS STREET DATE 10.11.11 Double Feature Records release a limited edition (1,000) single-disc version of 13 Most Beautiful: Songs for Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests. In response to fan requests, this new edition has been re-sequenced to match the running order of the live show that Dean & Britta have been performing for three years now, having played over 60 shows all around the world, from the Sydney Opera House to Lincoln Center in New York. Upcoming performances are scheduled for Portland, Oregon, Washington D.C., and Atlanta, GA. This project was initially commissioned by the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. Dean & Britta created 13 songs and instrumentals to perform live in a multimedia show, with Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests projected on a large screen above the band as they play. The screen tests were short silent films made by Warhol at the Factory between 1964 and 1966 – of actors, dancers, artists and Factory regulars. Each film is 4:15 in length. Dean & Britta selected 13 subjects (including Dennis Hopper, Lou Reed, Edie Sedgwick) and recorded 8 songs and 5 instrumentals for them, including covers of Bob Dylan’s “I’ll Keep it With Mine” and the V.U.’s “Not a Young Man Anymore.” Original Studio recordings produced by Dean & Britta.

Overview

Artist: Rustie Title: Glass Swords

10.11.2011

WARPCD217/WARPLP217

Following Rustie’s Warp debut – 2010’s Sunburst EP – as well as essential remixes for the likes of Jamie Lidell, Kelis, The Big Pink and Nicki Minaj, he emerged as a crown jewel within Glasgow’s already-deep talent pool of genrebusting electronic music producers. The now-classic early releases showcased Rustie’s love for obscure Japanese prog-rock, 16-bit video game sonics, icy grime and Detroit techno; creating a vision of the future of rave music. But for Glass Swords, his immensely anticipated, two-years-in-the-making full length debut, Rustie ushers in an otherworldly landscape. Both epic and alien (as the artwork suggests), the rushing neon strains of bright melody and earthquake drums hit you after a brief intro of beguiling synths and guitar meditations. Building colossal tension and release throughout, from first single (and club favourite) ‘Ultra Thizz’ to the soaring hooks and basement low end of ‘Death Mountain’ and ‘Cry Flames’, this record may well leave permanent marks on your stereo. As the album evolves, skittish hooks and warm textures sweep in and out of focus without ever losing the warped narrative that effectively joins Glass Swords into a startling cohesive whole. As an album, it’s one that doesn’t let up and demands repeat listens to fully appreciate the myriad hum-along melodies and wicked production u-turns, and don’t worry about the jittery over-caffeinated feeling you’ll have after listening…it’s to be expected.

Over 20 years ago Rob Miller turned his back on the world, settled in the remote location of the Isle of Skye, and against the rugged backdrop of the Cuillins, became a self-taught sword smith. History saw Amebix become a casualty of their cult success coupled with record company wrangling. Ricocheting from their Devon school, to a Dartmoor manor house to the squats of Bristol, the band became the first UK signing to Jello Biafra‟s label, Alternative Tentacles. Amebix delivered the album „Arise‟ for the label in 1985, followed by „Monolith‟ for Heavy Metal Records in 1987. Of the bands re re-emergence Rob says, "In these strange times the Amebix have found we have more to say". Upon returning Amebix to active status, brothers Rob & Stig were delighted to find the bands influence had extended across the Atlantic to long-time fan, Roy Mayorga (Soulfly, Stone Sour), who jumped at the chance to become part of the band. They admit that without the addition of Roy there would be no Amebix today, "Roy has bought more than just musicianship to the band, he has bought discipline and an understanding of what we truly wanted to convey, and the experience to allow that to manifest." In early 2009 Amebix made their first ever American appearances, selling out eight venues across the country. Buoyed by this initial success, they returned to the US and Canada for a second tour later in 2009, as well as numerous European appearances. This tight live unit lead to the desire and inspiration to record new music, to the obvious pleasure of their legions of fans. Amebix celebrated their return to the music scene in June 2011 with single,‟ Knights of the Black Sun‟ A taster of the album to come, the band described it as “a coming of age for our music, that will surprise a lot of people” Rob states that the new album „Sonic Mass‟ is the product of guerrilla warfare, "it took three years, looking for opportunities to meet and create music - different places, different times. It feels like this album grew organically around us. It‟s a mature reflection on the lives we‟ve lived and a vindication of the journey". „Sonic Mass‟ is a dark, sprawling soundscape of majestic proportions, metal and richly gothic toned, of tribal drumbeats and soaring melodies. "We are all a band of brothers, and the entire story of Amebix is yet to be completed" – Rob Miller. SLEEK WAVE OF HARMONIES, HORNS RECKLESS GARAGE-PSYCH FROM APPLES IN AND ELECTRONIC BLISS* STEREO LEADER AND FAMILY (*Playable board game included)

BIG FRESH—MONEYCHASERS

STREET DATE: 10.11.11

Take a yacht ride in space, with the new Big Fresh record blasting out of the portholes. More hooks than an android can compute. Post-modern pop formations. Sleek wave of swirling harmonies, horns and electronic bliss. Humming like a child with a crystal radio. This is the cosmic-scale pop of Moneychasers, the new album by Big Fresh, available October 11 on vinyl, CD and download on Garden Gate Records. Self-produced by the Kentucky avant-garde pop collective and engineered by Craig Morris in his hand-built Garden Gate Studio (Apples in stereo, Thee American Revolution, Jeff Mangum, Laminated Cat, etc.), the new album explodes with inventive catchiness and production details. Big Fresh, a ten-member collective, has expanded like the universe since 2009’s ambitious home-recorded B.F.F. (Big Fresh Forever); they’ve been joined by a new singer (Kate Drof), a horn section, and two additional multi-instrumentalists. With John Ferguson and Ben Phelan having joined world-touring indie band The Apples in stereo, Big Fresh shows have been sighted, but are farther between—yet in the studio, madly writing and producing, the band has evolved like a star cluster. The result is a stellar LP lying in a galactic sector between Tusk and R. Stevie Moore. Adding horns and the lush voice of Drof into their elaborate arrangements brings out the Fleetwood Mac influence on Big Fresh, and the R. Stevie Moore element is no accident: Vocalist/songwriter John Ferguson spent his childhood having the hyper-creative lo-fi pioneer as a sort of uncle, appearing on Moore’s recordings and immersed in his process. In addition to filling your mind with smooth, joyful music, Moneychasers aims to challenge your game-playing skills: The band created an absurdist board game that makes up the album artwork. Now it is your move. Seal the hatch. Engage forward thrusters. Beam in some friends, press play and blast off.

Donkey Jacket STREET

DATE 10/11/11

LTD. EDITION

CLEAR VINYL 700

COPIES Henry’s Funeral Shoe is formed by Welsh brothers Aled (guitars, vocals) and Brennig Clifford (drums, percussion). Their blues inspired rockn’roll reaches back to the sounds of yesterday, and artists such as Canned Heat, early Fleetwood Mac, Rory Gallagher, The Groundhogs (which who they recently shared the stage), and even early Captain Beefheart come to mind. “Donkey Jacket” (named for the coat worn by Welsh miners) cranks up the blues power, but also delivers some emotional acoustic numbers, making a for a richer album than their highlypraised 2009 self-titled debut. The album was recorded in Wales by Tim Hammill and mixed in Detroit by Jim Diamond, and features guest appearances by John ‘Ned’ Edwards, a long time collaborator of Van Morrison who also played with Dr John and Solomon Burk, on harmonica, slide guitar and mandolin, Pete Hurley, the bass player for the legendary seventies Welsh band Lone Star, and Justin Beynon of the Broken Vinyl Club on piano. “Some of the blackest guitar and drum work to come out of Wales, in fact the blackest thing from the Valleys since Anthracite was first mined.” - Chris Phillips / BRMF “There are shades of Peter Green in the guitar playing, and the sparse vocals have the rough-and-ready force of guttural blues shouters such as the proto-rock ‘n’ roller Big Joe Turner.” – Hyperbolium “When they crank up the riffing or let rip with some high-octane slide, it’s as transporting as anything by postMississippi Fred McDowell. – M. Edwards / PopMatters This is a band that proves the nu-blues movement in the U.K is very much awake and raising the bar. – Will Bray / Blues In London ALIVE0125-1 • BOX : 30 COLOR VINYL BAR CODE : 095081012516 SRLP : $16.99 • BLUES ROCK ALIVE0125-2 • DIGIPAK : 30 BAR CODE : 095081012523 SRLP : $15.99 • BLUES ROCK

CD

Street Date: Oct 11, 2011

Remixes and Dub versions from Jahbulon and Incunabula The circle is now complete (sort of). The third release is a revisit (remix and dub style) of the first two passages, in the Method of Defiance experience. The remixers where chosen for their forward thinking as well as their catalogue of previous remix experience. Scientist starts it off with a retouching of the single “One World” and later reenters with a ganja smoked up “Herb is burnin”(dub style, of course), & he tosses a disordered ordered mix at the end to make it all fair. Prefuse 73 pushes his space-age hip hop way in, via the future, with his take on a piece from Incunabula (and you thought the original was an out record). Mad professor stumbles in dubbin’ his ass off. SubCode, a Moroccan remixer we have been chasing for a while, remixes as if his life depended on it, the Hawk track “Do or Die”. Dr Israel remixes 2 tracks, one of his and one of Hawk’s and this is something I wish he would do more of, the man can remix damn it. MRC Riddims, the production/DJ team of Oktopus (dalek) & MRC (from Ifwhen & All Natural Lemon & Lime Flavors) join in with a reshaping of “Elijah’s Lament” done all Krooklyn style. Bill Laswell not to be upstaged, contributes 2 mixes from Incunabula, a dub out and an ambient version of “Quantum Echo”. Perdurabo 6, via the Basque speaking part of Spain, gives his almost 6 minute take on “One World” quite pleasant really. Today's modern day composer can work in many different areas of sound with one click of a mouse. This is the single most influential factor in Emika’s artistic development. Thrilled by the means and ways technology offers to shape song writing, she chose a software studio as her instrument throughout her musical education and beyond. While Emika’s approach to composition evolved, she worked with Berlin's legendary engineer Rashad Becker to craft the unique sound of her record. Already highly-rated by everyone from Mary-Anne Hobbs to Thom Yorke and covered by media outlets as varied Resident Advisor and The Guardian, the release of this, her eponymous debut album, is awaited with considerable anticipation. Emika is inspired by the roots techno culture because “it was a movement with sound and dancing at its very core. It was not about idols or stars, it was about sound and people coming together to dance and feel free.” She’s inspired by dubstep from Bristol and London since 2004 when she lived in these cities because of its meditational bass vibes: “originally it was deep spiritual music made by kids for kids.” These two influences twine together with her love of the great universal pop song, her abilities as a song writer, a classically-trained pianist and a singer, to make something completely unique. Asked to name an inspiration from the past, Emika turns to Delia Derbyshire, the legendary Radiophonic Workshop composer who came up with the original Dr Who theme, "not so much for the sounds she made as rather for her questing spirit, it inspires me as i go ahead mapping my own musical realm"

“My last album, ‘Great Lengths,’ was very personal. A lot of the music and the themes behind it were taken out of my daily life: my sorrows and my melancholy. For this album, I chose things that are further away from me: the ‘Ghost People’ theme. There are references to DJing in general. Not the jet-set DJ life, but the old Paradise Garage DJ life, where people want to share and play the music they really love, regardless of if it’s trendy. Nothing fancy or flashy. Just back to the roots.” It’s only natural that Martyn has risen above the clichés and pitfalls of the vacuous DJ world. Over his 15 years DJing, 6 years producing, and 4 years A&R’ing his 3024 imprint, the Holland-born/Washington DC-based artist has forged his own path every step of the way. His multi-leveled career has kept balance with a focus on art, and his every sacrifice is preserved in an endless dedication to music. As a continual record buyer and beat seeker, Martyn is a beacon of hope through leagues of passion-less DJs and producers, the ‘ghost people’: plastic, hollow shells that focus only on the in-the-now grooves or keeping in line with trends. Martyn’s inspiration stems from the old school mentality of connecting the dots, much like how Ron Hardy would tweak a soul track into a house groove, or Goldie sent processed breakbeats far into the future. Throughout his uncategorisable sound, Martyn gives nods to the electronic music that came before him: bringing back the energy of early rave, the deep builds of old jungle, the immersive and impulsive feel of an early François K DJ set. A veritable ambassador for scenes across the board, and across oceans, Martyn has a rare ability to bring sounds together, and unite the right people all the while. One artist he’s united with time and time again is Brainfeeder leader Flying Lotus. A close friend within whom he’s always found creative alliance, the two decided to join forces on Martyn’s sophomore album this September. With Ghost People, Martyn pulls Brainfeeder out of LA and straight into the fluorescent bounce of West London’s 2-step, massaging the darker edge of Croydon’s dub roots, and D&B’s otherworldly and sci-fi sonics, while simultaneously moving through the grit of Detroit’s mechanic grooves, and into the freewheeling vibe of Berghain.Yet, all the while, he maintains Brainfeeder’s spirit of wild experimentalism and - as the title of his ‘We Are You In The Future’ suggests - sense of futurism at the forefront, with each of the album’s unpredictable tracks. To bring the album to life, Martyn is teaming up with his 3024 partner, visual artist and muralist (“the artist formally known as street artist”), Erosie. The two will be planning a series of special launch parties in various parts of the world.

ROCKET FROM THE TOMBS— BarFly FORMAT - CD LABEL - Fire Records UPC - 809236119728 CATALOG # - FIRECD197 LIST PRICE - $16.99

Fire Records announce release of the first full studio recording from the legendary Rocket From The Tombs. The group that spawned Pere Ubu and the Dead Boys. This is their first ever release in 37 years. Fire will also reissue the 2002 collection of live recordings and b-sides, 'The Day The Earth Met the Rocket From the Tombs'. It‟s the ultimate understatement to say we‟re excited to be releasing Rocket From The Tombs first studio album. The five-piece from Cleveland, Ohio called it a day in 1975 and in the ashes of Rocket From the Tombs the lads released material in bands Pere Ubu, Dead Boys and Stiv Bators. However, it was their work in Rocket From The Tombs that would inform the sound in their later projects, “Ain‟t It Fun” would continue to be played in Cheetah Chrome‟s group Dead Boys amongst others while David Thomas utilized “Final Solution” in Pere Ubu.2002 saw the first official release of Rocket From the Tombs culling bootlegs, demos and live rarities on the universally loved „The Day The Earth Met Rocket From The Tombs‟, which went on to influence bands today affirming Rocket From The Tombs songs are as imperative now as they were 37 years ago. „Barfly‟ opens with head turner “I Sell Soul”, a feverish rock number offering up all of the meat and none of the gristle, Thomas continues, “It's a brazen and unapologetic re-affirmation of the power of guitar rock, direct but also possessing great depth of texture and subtlety with a heavy dose of bad attitude.” From feel-good track “Sister Love Train” to the heartfelt “Romeo and Juliet”. Rocket From the Tombs have delivered the holy grail of damaged garage rock. 37 years in the waiting !

SAVAGING SPIRES - Savaging Spires FORMAT - CD/LP LABEL - Critical Heights UPC - CD: 809236130396 LP: 809236130389 CATALOG # - CD: CRITTER03CD LP: CRITTER03LP LIST PRICE - CD: $16.99 LP: $19.99 "Mother, I can hear singing outside." "Don't be silly, dear, there's nobody outside..." This music belongs somewhere. Late summer afternoons, English pre-twilight and the old house that could do with some work. You walk along the edge of the lake and catch the scent of jasmine. The voices are still out there, all these years later, singing something you remember. Savaging Spires (and their true identity is still somewhat shadowy) have created a world of sound where old ghosts can walk freely through these sunny grounds and impart equal doses of dread and joy. Take opener 'Bending the Rules of Time' which immediately transports us with whistles, strings and those soon-to-be-familiar choral vocals. A kind of work song for the dead, it is a brief and wonderfully melodic songdream. In fact none of these pieces outstay their welcome, allowing us to feel as though we just happened to grasp them for a moment: music at once spontaneous and eternal. In a break from the acoustics, 'Trust' employs stuttering feedback worthy of Washing Machine-era Sonic Youth before collapsing into hazy music box melancholy. 'Crows' allows the mood to darken further with a repeated entreaty for the subject to "wake up". It sounds like a wake outside the caravan and beneath the stars. It is left to 'Seconds In Motion' to close the record with a gentle reverie of harmonica and slide guitar. Another, until now hidden, continent creeps into view for a moment and we sense possibilities beyond these gentle haunted lawns. But that's for another time, insofar as Savaging Spires pay attention to such constraints. For now we have one of the most evocative records you're likely to hear this year.

His fourth album under The Bongolian moniker continues the musical journey where 2007's Outer Bongolia left off, bringing us back down to Earth possibly via France circa 1967 via 2011, in a wildly eclectic rare groove fusion of Funk Soul Hammond Beat Jazz and a Sci-Fi Boogaloo. Dig it. The first single to be taken to radio from the album 'The Riviera Affair' (Feburary 2011) was featured on BBC 6 Music Nemone's Lunchtime Loves (who interviewed Nasser before his sell-out Blow Up / HMV Next Big Thing) alongside support plays by Gideon Coe and Craig Charles at 6 Music, and proving a strong favourite with club DJ's around the UK. The track was also featured as a Sky Sports Soccer AM track of the week. The second single „Give It To Me (On The Left Side)‟ is a furiously paced bongo-crazed Hammond happening that is already receiving radio play ahead of the album release, both singles along with many album tracks are already proving strong favorites on the Blow Up club dance floor.. A decade ago Nasser Bouzida disappeared into his studio and created a solo set of recordings which resulted in the birth of his alter ego The Bongolian. Drawing on his influences of Funk, Soul and Jazz Nasser produced an inspired selection of recordings blending elements of grinding percussion and heavy Bongo rhythms. The eponymous debut „The Bongolian‟ was released early in 2002 to much critical acclaim, and followed up by the 2006 „Blueprint‟ and in 2008 by „Outer Bongolia‟ (which scored a licensing deal in Japan). The albums have become record box essentials for DJs, finding a wide appeal from Dance and Hip-Hop to rare groove and funk 45s fans. Nasser has assembled a high calibre five piece live band with whom The Bongolian have toured USA, UK and Europe. The Bongolian live in London at the Blow Up Easter club special at Madame JoJo's on Thursday 21st April. “A bakers dozen of gems. Bongo powered grooves at their very best, Preston Epps eat your heart out” Scootering „Recommended Listening‟.

Slide to Freedom 20,000 Miles More Incredible Blues-Indian Fusion

howlin’ the blues

Reviews of Slide to Freedom: 20,000 Miles is the third record by Slide to Freedom. That fact helps make it understandable why the world of blues and classical Indian music can mesh. It makes it sound like that combination should always have been this easy. Daniel Levine, Celebrity Cafe

Fusing Blues music with Indian music has been tried before, but no one has done it quite as successfully as Doug Cox and Salil Bhatt (the son of V.M. Bhatt—who won a Grammy with Ry Cooder in 1992). “20,000 miles ” was recorded In the famous Royal Studio in Memphis, TN, where Al Greene used to record. Joining Doug, Salil and Cassius are some amazing guests—Calvin Cooke, the founding father of sacred steel, gospel legends The Campbell Brothers, and Betty Soo, the Americana-inspired darling of Austin’s singer songwriter scene.

“When roots guitarist Cox sat on the floor mats of a studio barn in British Columbia with three Indian classical musicians, he engaged in an act of liberation from the conventions of the blues.” Frank John Hadley, Downbeat “It shouldn’t sound good, and it doesn’t. It sounds great.” Lou Novacheck, Elmore “Many cross-cultural experiments end up sounding like awkward hybrids….Slide to Freedom is a wonderful exception to that rule.” Rob Johnson, Hittin’ the Note

Doug Cox—one of Canada’s best slide guitarists, teams up with Salil Bhatt — one of India’s best slide instrumentalists, along with Cassius Khan, an amazing table player for yet another CD of blues-Indian fusion. Recorded at the famous Royal Studio in Memphis, TN—founded by the legendary Willie Mitchell who recorded Al Greene. Special guests on this CD include Calvin Cooke, the founding father of sacred streel; the Campbell Brothers, one of the the top gospel/sacred steel bands in the United States; and Betty Soo, an amazing new Americana voice out of Austin, TX. Rock, Paper, Scissors, who specialize in World music will be handling PR for this release.

“I would be the first to admit that I know as much about Indian music as I do about flying the space shuttle. However, after listening to Slide to Freedom over the past few weeks, I can safely say that I want to hear more. Most blues fans should feel the same way. Slide to Freedom is an incredible journey into world music by a group of stellar musicians.” Graham Clarke, Blues Bytes

FALL 2011 TOUR To be announced soon!

Multi-instrumentalist, singer, and provocateur, Mikkel Hess has been hard at work on a new album since 2009’s Hess Is More - Hits was selected as one of Time Out Magazine’s Top 10 Albums of the Year . Having scored for theater, composed for films and collaborated with artists on performance pieces, Mikkel curates a process that resembles something akin to that of a collagist—taking inspiration and integrating references from art, film, music and magic. The resulting, all-encompassing approach has drawn comparisons to everyone from Erlend Oye and Jon Brion, to CAN and the music you might find on Smalltown Supersound. Hess has evolved this genre-defying project, collaborating with local musicians and fellow Dane, cowriter/producerRasmus Bille Bahncke for the past two years on the exhilarating new album, Creation Keeps the Devil Away. The album was recorded, mixed and produced in New York at This Is Care Of studio and it is a heady concoction of Hess’ blithe vocals, giddy electronics, funky, multi-ethnic horns and percussions, disco beats, and an assortment of bells and whistles that support catchy folk-pop melodies . The songs feature unpretentious lyrics laced with undercurrents of double meanings and soulful choruses that drive the listener into a sonic trance of everchanging hues. They flow between buoyant and bouncy selections like “What’s on the Second Floor,” the twisted homage to Talking Heads ’ “Burning Down the House “ entitled simply “Burn,” and the Bollywood-esque romp “Going Looking for the End of the World,” to the more pensive and melancholic “Go go go go,” the heartfelt elegy to a lover or friend “Wonder Who You’re Singing For,” and the moody, but infinitely uplifting “Call for Change” and “Circling High.” The eponymous final track takes an irony-free stance as Hess growls “hey, hey, hey, creation keeps he devil away” over a plucky bass-line and sticky staccato keyboards. It’s a 21st century anthem that wonderfully captures the ethos of the album — a perfect mix of urban angst and self-help pop. Along with label-mates like Forro In the Dark, Calibro 35, and Wax Poetic, Hess is More exists in the strange and intoxicating land of Nublu where borders are blurred, boundaries are breached and creativity is king. With humor and bliss Hess Is More’sCreation Keeps the Devil Away proves that nothing could be truer. CONTACT: MECHELLE LOIS • LOISM@REDEYEUSA.COM • 336-578-7300 X 219

new releases 2xLP

Few albums represent an individual and genre defining milestone as does the self titled debut from Justin Broadrick's Jesu. Combining the considerable sonic weight of Godflesh with brittle melancholy melodies in hypnotic longform structures, it provided ample evidence of Broadrick's myriad capabilities as a song writer and ceaselessly creative musical innovator. While the eight tracks that comprise the album truly sound like no one else, they also hinted at previously unexplored areas of tenderness and subtlety. Though Jesu went on to mine those more harmonious aspects of its sound on subsequent releases to great effect, none rivaled the debut in its perfectly crafted mixture of beauty, heaviness, hope and despair. Much has happened since the arrival of this album, both for Broadrick as well as the musical world(s) he inhabits, but nothing has diminished the gleaming radiance of this darkened gem. 10 long years ago Ninja Tune released the debut record by a then relatively unknown (outside their home town) afro-beat collective by the name of Antibalas. Since then the band has toured around the world multiple times. If there's a festival you've heard of... odds are they've played it (Coachella, Glastonbury, Montreux, Newport Jazz, Montreal Jazz Fest...). They've sound-clashed with The Roots and then joined them to recreate "It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back". Members of the band have appeared with The Roots on Jimmy Fallon, backed Amy Winehouse, appeared on albums by TV On The Radio, Medeski Martin & Wood, as part of the Tony aware winning Broadway musical FELA!, and won a grammy for their work with Angelique Kidjo. After a lengthy recording hiatus the band are back in it with the release of a new 12" on their own label, featuring an innovative arrangement of the Bob Marley classic "Rat Race" along with "Se Chiflo", a lively, swinging tune that revives the links between Afrocuban music and Afrobeat. To welcome them back we at Ninja Tune have also repressed limited quantities of both their Liberation Afrobeat album and their second release with us Talkatif. Get them while you still can!
