Artist: Brian Eno Title: Drums Between The Bells 7.5.2011

WARPCD214 / WARPLP214

“Pairing prickly electronics with live drum patterns – Eno dumps great globs of blotchy machine-malfunction into the mix. Holland's poetry is interlaced courtesy of [a] monotone voice... the combined effect makes the whole undertaking sound like a wild William Gibson fantasy come to life” – Pitchfork Brian Eno first came across the work of Rick Holland in the late 90’s during the Map-Making project; a series of collaborative works between students of the Royal College, the Guildhall School of Music, the Royal Academy of Music, the Royal College of Music, the National Youth Orchestra and the English National Ballet, among others. In 2003, Brian and Rick made their first music together. The resulting work does not appear on this album. In the time since that initial session they have met infrequently to work on new compositions. In early 2011, following the release of Small Craft on a Milk Sea (Brian's debut album for Warp Records), the pair resolved to finish the project. Drums Between the Bells is the result.

Coming out with one of the most anticipated and long-awaited albums so far on Brainfeeder is Samiyam aka Sam Baker. “Sam Baker’s Debut Album” is 40 minutes of pure listening pleasure, a series of woozy, off-centre hip hop instrumentals drawing heavily on Baker’s love of electronic funk but never in hock to it. Intensely detailed and carrying considerable emotional weight, this is not “Rap Beats Volume 2” but an album of fully-realised pieces of music which stand on their own without the need for an MC’s intervention. Ann Arbor native, Samiyam (born Sam Baker) moved to Los Angeles in 2006. In his short time out West, he has become one of the city’s most progressive and recognized producers, a man who has spearheaded the revival of interest in instrumental hip-hop music over the last few years. Baker’s “Rap Beats Vol.1” collection was the very first release on Brainfeeder. He has also collaborated with old friend Flying Lotus as Flyamsam as well as having releases on Hyperdub and Poo-Bah records. Samiyam describes the work contained in his “Debut album” simply as, “my favourite stuff” – and what could be better than that?

NINJA TUNE NEW RELEASES FOR 5TH JULY 2011 SLUGABED Moonbeam Rider EP Cat #: ZEN12289 Format: 12” Barcode: 5021392669168 Box Lot: 20 Label: Ninja Tune SRP: $9.99

Tracklist A Moonbeam Rider Heck Flex B My Sense of Smell Comes and Goes Tomorrow Morning Nu Krak Swing

Greg Feldwick aka Slugabed is on a roll right now. Newly signed to Ninja Tune, for whom he remixed Roots Manuva’s “Witness” as part of their 20th anniversary celebrations, he has recently played at the legendary Berghain club in Berlin, launched Brighton club night Donkey Pitch’s record label with the track “Donkey Stomp,” toured Canada and remixed both Eskmo and Stateless for his new home label. Now he presents his first EP for Ninja, five tracks deep and, in the words of The Quietus, crafting “all the best bits of current American pop culture and distilling it along with UK bass music into a typically sceptical Brit attitude.” Epic, spacey, channelling funk and soul through stumbling, glitched-out electronics and slathers of unfeasible bass, Slugabed is a man of many styles. “Moonbeam Riders” filters some of the crunching hip hop attack of the LA Beat scene, “Tomorrow Morning” is 2-step with extra wobble, “Nu Krak Swing,” well, the title should give you some idea about that one. Funny, clever, referential, sometimes moving and never anything but completely himself, Slugabed is a substantial new presence in UK bass music. Originally from Bath but now based in London, Feldwick has had releases with Stuff, Ramp and Planet Mu, plus remixes for the likes of Starkey, Eprom and Kelpe as well as his legendary unofficial remix of Pharoah Monche’s “Simon Says.” Key supporters have included Benji B and Mary Anne Hobbs. With his debut album nearing completion many more will be coming on board soon. Take a ride…

AMON TOBIN Surge Cat #: ZEN12292 Format: 12” Barcode: 5021392680125 Box Lot: 20 Label: Ninja Tune SRP: $10.99

Tracklist

A Surge (Album Version) Surge (Two Fingers Mix) B Surge (Emika Version) Surge (16 Bit Mix)

Although it feels almost sacregilious to take a track out of “ISAM” and release it as a single, we’re going to have a go. “Surge” is one of the short, sweet, standout moments of a remarkable record. Beautiful and mournful, it sounds a little like two lovers being strafed with dark matter. As Tobin explains, “Surge isn't a story or anything, but in the interests of painting a picture it could be about trying to hold the reins on blasts of electrical energy or some such thing - trying to guide it while avoiding getting turned to powder. I think of Tesla with his mad machines doing his best to channel overpowering natural forces into something he can control and utilise.” First up on the remix tip is none other than… Amon Tobin himself, who in his more Two Fingers guise, ups the beats and the sub-bass for a satisfyingly heavy experience. Labelmate Emika, a long-time admirer of Amon’s work, reinvents the tune as a fragile, almost churchlike experience, her Czech singing delicate but strangely powerful. 16bit take up the last place on the EP turning in a raw, bassheavy dubstepper which takes us a long way from where we started but in a very satisying way! Packaging: Clear plastic outer sleeve with white printed text. Artwork printed on card inner sleeve.

Jackie-O Motherfucker’s new album ‘Earth Sound System’ is released on Fire Records. The physical releases feature artwork by artist Chris Johanson. You never quite know what you're going to get from the cult Portland, Oregon psychedelicists, Jackie-O Motherfucker. Are you going to be in for some deep brain thrombosis space rock? Are they going to prescribe you a dose of some heavily medicated camp fire drone? Will they be hitting you with some improvisational and angular free jazz? Will they be traversing the entire planet to bring you some previously unexplored global frequencies? Well, on Earth Sound System, JOMF's 15th album since Alchemy... Shit To Gold in 1995, it's a case of all of this and a lot, lot more. 'In The Willows' starts proceedings off with banks of hazy guitars that threaten to show the chillwave youngsters where it's at with some sun dappled riffs which lie somewhere between MV & EE's Bummer Road and Mercury Rev's Yerself Is Steam. But then things get much weirder and introverted with 'Raga Joining', which comes on like Dub Narcotic playing Indian devotional music. 'Dedication' is an act of freak folk shamanism, with its repetitively ritual chant of progress: "This is dedicated to the person who is trying to find the next right thing to do." 'Raga Separating' soothes like the brief lucid interval in the middle of a wall crawling acid trip, with analogue synthesizer drones, languid percussion and space creating noise. But it's all leading up to 'Where We Go', the ragged glory of The Butthole Surfers trampling all over J Mascis. With as many line-ups as The Fall, Jackie-O Motherfucker has always centred round the singular if fuzzy vision of Tom Greenwood an arty psych rocker from the high Dakota Plains. But perhaps he has found some certainty in his life as the most steady line up of JO MF is back featuring brothers Nick and Jed Bindeman (Eternal Tapestry) on guitar and drums and Brian Mumford (Dragging an Ox Through Water) on guitars and home-made electronics. Brian also recorded and co-produced Earth Sound System, which also features the voice of Dana Dart-McLean, and a collaboration with visual artist Chris Johanson, who made paintings based on the music for the cover and inserts. Going through their most stable period to date, and still with Fire Records, they are taking very local and rural elements of folk and psychedelia - the very stuff that's been cast aside by other less inquisitive souls - and then transporting them into various new pastures, all of them designed to expand your mind. As Tom Greenwood said recently: "Who knows if anyone has ever actually turned lead into gold, but at the core of all alchemical ideas is the concept of transformation: garbage in, lotus out. You'll find that meditating on transformation can be a spiritual source, and as you spend time thinking about the possibilities, you will carry these concepts into other parts of your life. It's the foundation of hope where you are toiling now, and this is the best way to pursue change." Tracklisting: 1. In The Willows 2. Raga Joining 3. Bring It To Me 4. Dedication 5. Raga Separating 6. Where We Go

Big Spider’s Back CIS1039: BIG SPIDER’S BACK – MEMORY MAN With his breathtaking debut album Memory Man, Big Spider’s Back (aka Yair Rubinstein) expands on the dreamy, psychedelic sample-based pop from his Warped EP, and pushes his unique sound into a mind-blowing array of new territory. Incorporating everything from British library music to Indian film soundtracks and field recordings, the album flows gracefully between ambient avalanches of sound and hauntingly ethereal vocals, sitting on top of a lush bed of hip-hop and dubstep-inspired beats. The album borrows themes based around memory from a wide array of classic sci-fi books and comics, ranging from J. G. Ballard to William Gibson.

Recorded in the past year both in his garage studio in Seattle and new adopted hometown of Brooklyn, the record is Rubinstein’s first effort completely recorded and mixed on his own, save guest contributions and production work from Seattle friends USF. His cross-country relocation coincides with big refinements in his sound, focusing on drum programming more than previous efforts. The more drum-centric approach presents a new style for Big Spider’s Back, providing a solid foundation for his lush array of ecstatic, joyfully sung melodies that are staple for the young producer.
