2. Set Healthy Boundaries

Supporting doesn’t mean sacrificing yourself.

Clarify what you can and cannot do

Use “Yes, and ” language: “Yes, I can help with that and I need time to rest tonight ”

Boundaries preserve connection and prevent burnout

3. Encourage Autonomy

Avoid doing everything for them. Instead, support them in taking small steps:

Break tasks into parts

Use tools like pill organizers or shared calendars

Let them make choices

Celebrate small wins

4. Build Your Own Support System

You cannot do this alone.

Join support groups (NAMI, Al-Anon, ACA)

Seek therapy or coaching for yourself

Share responsibilities with family or friends

5. Plan Ahead for Crisis

Don’t wait for an emergency to get prepared.

Create a written safety plan (www mysafetyplan org)

Know local hospitals, mobile crisis units, and how to call 988

Have legal documents (e g , power of attorney) ready if needed

6. Prioritize Self-Care

7. Communicate with Care

Use empathy and curiosity, not correction or shame

“Help me understand what that’s like for you ” “I feel worried when you isolate can we talk about it?”

Use motivational interviewing: “What would it look like if things got better?”

8. Navigate Systems with Confidence

You may need to advocate in hospitals, schools, or courts

Document everything

Understand confidentiality laws (HIPAA).

Use scripts with providers: “I know you can’t share details, but can I tell you what I’m seeing at home?”

Low-Cost & Crisis Resources

Final Thoughts

Whether you're seeking therapy yourself or caring for someone else, mental health is a journey, not a destination. Be patient. Ask for help. Educate yourself. And above all, know that you are not alone.

This May, let’s break stigma, build knowledge, and support each other in healing.

Spring Worship Retreat 2025 May 18

The Worship Ministry Team invites you to our Spring Worship Retreat!

We will be touring the exhibit titled “Singing the Sacred” at the Pitts Theology Library at Emory’s Candler School of Theology.

The exhibit showcases Southern songbooks published between 1850 and 1925, representing the diverse vocal music making of the era, including shape-note singing The tour will be led by a leading researcher and curator of this material at Emory, Dr Jesse Karlsberg.

We will meet at Emory at 2:30 p.m. on May 18; additional details are forthcoming. Admission is free, but it is important that we plan the number of attendees with Emory in advance as they will be opening the exhibit just for our group, so please RSVP to Carol Bell at 56bellca@gmail.com.
