Lent 2022: Journeying Together We’re going on a trip together this Lent. Journeys, whether physical or spiritual, often provide moments of discovery and illumination. Our Lenten book study will lead us on a spiritual journey through the wilderness. We’ll also be taking some physical journeys, including using our prayer labyrinth and taking a pilgrimage through our neighborhood. But no matter how or where we travel, we often find that it was God who was accompanying and leading us all the time.

Ash Wednesday, March 2 Worship at 12 Noon and 7 PM In-person and Livestream On Ash Wednesday we begin our forty-day journey toward Easter with a day of fasting and repentance. Marking our foreheads with dust, we acknowledge that we die and return to the earth. At the same time, the dust traces the life-giving cross indelibly marked on our foreheads at baptism. While we journey through Lent to return to God, we have already been reconciled to God through Christ. We humbly pray for God to make our hearts clean while we rejoice that “now is the day of salvation.”
Lenten Small Group Book Study Various times, both in-person and online Life Unsettled: A Scriptural Journey for Wilderness Times Usually "wilderness" conjures up images of desolate wastelands and wild frontiers. Taking his cue from the Hebrew Scriptures, Pastor Cory Driver suggests that wilderness can be anywhere "unsettled." From his deep biblical and rabbinic knowledge and his experiences of wilderness (both literal and metaphorical), he offers wisdom and guidance for those of us who find ourselves in wilderness spaces and affirms that, though the wilderness is not an easy place to be, it is “the space where God speaks and leads.”

Journeying our Neighborhood Sundays after the 11 AM Service As we consider our personal journey's this Lent and their impact on our lives, we will also be offering an actual journey through Midtown as we reflect on the impact of Redeemer in the community and pray for our partners in ministry and people we serve together. You can join a pastor shortly after the 11'oclock service and walk with a group or there will be handouts available so that you can walk by yourself. The total distance will be right around 1 mile.

Altar Decorations As you come to worship this Lent, you will notice that the altar flowers have been replaced by stacks of stone. Our ancient forebears piled stones to mark places where they had experienced a divine presence. Today, hikers in barren places follow similar markers, called cairns, so that they do not lose their way. In both senses, the rocks gathered at our altar this Lent mark the closeness of God in this holy place and the promise that even in wilderness places, we continue to receive divine guidance and provision.

A Labyrinth is a contemplative spiritual space for you to reflect following the rhythm of slow walking, whether you walk with your feet on the canvas or with your fingers tracing a labyrinth path on paper. Maundy Thursday, April 14 Worship at 12 Noon and 7 PM In-person and Livestream We begin the Great Service of the Three Days of Jesus' death and resurrection. On this day we remember Christ’s last meal with his disciples, but the central focus is his commandment that we live love one another as Christ has loved us. As Jesus washed his disciples’ feet, so we are called to give and receive love in humble service to the entire world. The service will include the opportunity for individual absolution and Holy Communion, and in the evening, conclude with the stripping of the altar.
Good Friday, April 15 Worship at 12 Noon and 7 PM In-person and Livestream Neighborhood Stations of the Cross 1:00 PM The Great Three Days continues as Jesus reveals the power and glory of God, even as he is put on trial and sentenced to death. Standing with the disciples at the foot of the cross, we pray for the whole world as Christ’s death offers life to all. Our evening service will feature a special Choral Tenebrae.
The choir will offer a musical response to the key points from the passion account according to St. John as the room gradually darkens, awaiting the sunrise of Easter morning. This year we sing songs of deep emotion from the American folk hymn and African American spiritual traditions--What wondrous love is this?...Were you there?...Surely he died on Calvary...He never said a Mumbalin' Word--as well as traditional pieces including O Sacred Head, When I Survey the Wondrous Cross, and Go to dark Gethsemane.
Family Vigil, April 16 10:00 AM -12 Noon Center your family in faith this Easter season. We will hold our Family Vigil Worship Service and an outdoor Easter Activity including an egg hunt, a petting zoo, and more.
Easter Vigil, April 16 7 PM | In-person and Livestream This is the night of salvation! The Great Three Days comes to a conclusion as we gather around fire, word, water, bread, and wine, proclaiming through story and song that ours is a God who continuously brings life out of death. We gather with all the saints of every time and place to celebrate the good news: Christ is risen indeed! Alleluia!
MUSIC "Measure for Measure" the Music of Shakespeare's Plays Sunday, March 6, 2022 The Redeemer Concert Series continues with a free 2:00 PM concert presented by Ensemble Chaconne: “Measure for Measure: The Music of Shakespeare’s Plays.” The program is a rare and compelling view of the music Shakespeare's audiences would have heard, including music by the leading composers of his day (Thomas Morley, Robert Johnson, John Dowland, others) and anonymous tunes of the period. Music from As You Like It, Twelfth Night, Henry V, The Winter's Tale, The Tempest, Hamlet, Othello, Macbeth, and other plays. It is performed on renaissance flutes, viola da gamba, and renaissance lute, with vocalist Burcu Gulec. Free parking is provided, and there will be a light reception following the concert. Donations to the Friends of Music will be accepted at the door.

Whether your child has been waiting for their first communion or already started receiving, we encourage them to grow their understanding of this ancient and holy practice. Not sure if this is the right year for your child to participate? We're happy to help you decide! The format will depend on Covid conditions. If possible, we will meet in person at Redeemer with a hybrid option for those at home. Participants can then take communion in one of our normal worship services, or we will schedule a special outdoor communion service for participating families like last year. Baptism at Redeemer Greetings! If you or someone you know is expecting a child or interested in baptism at Redeemer at any age, we would love to celebrate this special milestone with your family! We have several dates available this spring and summer. Here are some details and more resources: With guidance from the Redeemer Covid Task Force, we are offering the following format for baptisms: One family at a time (which means one per week). One baptism per month can be scheduled during worship. Any other baptisms that month will be after worship. Whether during or after worship, it will be live-streamed and recorded for anyone unable to attend in person. Most Sundays are available as long as there is no conflict with a major worship event or another baptism. June 19- 25 We had a BLAST with our friends from Lutheranch and singing silly camp songs with the Dad band on Sunday morning at Camp Sunday Sing and Play! Vacation Bible School June 6-10 Redeemer is planning on in-person VBS this summer (fingers crossed). We will meet each morning, MonFri June 6-10 with Covid precautions as appropriate at the time. Unfortunately, we will not be able to offer after-care, so campers will need to be picked up at lunchtime. Our VBS planning team will be working out all the details, and we could use your help! Los Angeles may have won the championship game on the field, but Cincinnati and the Lutheran Community Food Ministry were the BIG winners in the Youth Ministry’s annual Souper Bowl of CaringSM fundraiser. Your cash donations and in-kind food purchases from the LCFM’s Amazon Wish List put Cincinnati and fruit over the top by 2-to-1. Donations total $1789.70 to date. Remember that you can donate to the LCFM any time during the year. Some members make recurring donations. Large or small, any gift to the LCFM makes a difference to our Midtown community.

We had a great time at our Family Retreat! It was wonderful to gather with 11 of our families to worship, serve, learn, and recharge together. Our theme centered on how we can connect to God and each other to 'recharge' when we are feeling less than 100%. We left feeling energized by creation, worship, and much-needed time with our Redeemer friends!!

This year the annual synod youth event for Middle and High schoolers called 'All Georgia' was held in a modified format as a day event at Lutheranch. We did a service project for the camp, reflected on our service and talked about what we are passionate about in our faith and in our lives. We also enjoyed the camp's many activities and ended the day by worshipping together.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Redeeming Grace Supports Anti-Sex Trafficking Efforts
On February 16, 2022, our congregation’s Redeeming Grace joined others for Advocacy Day at the Capitol to speak out in favor of measures to strengthen our state’s anti-sex trafficking laws. As this article is being written, we are advocating for, among other potential bills, SB 381 which will make sex-buying a felony on the first offense. Please get to know your senator and representative and let them know your stance on this issue. As Street Grace says “no buyers mean no human trafficking, and the crime of pandering needs to match the enormity of the crime.”
Did you know that in 2019, our state created a Human Trafficking Prosecution Unit which, in 2021, initiated 25 cases, arrested 9 individuals, investigated and prosecuted 51 defendants, and rescued and assisted 107 victims? The Unit includes dedicated prosecutors, criminal investigators, analysts and a victim advocate. The Unit’s chief goal is to rescue victims and put buyers and sellers behind bars."
What is happening to victims? In 2021, over 300 children and young women participated in the restorative programs of Wellspring Living! Redeeming Grace continues to support the survivors in the Girls Residential Program with life skill classes and is preparing to co-host upcoming graduation.

FEATURED LCFM PARTNER Community Corner If you’ve attended a Sunday morning Worship Service at Redeemer lately, you may have noticed the occasional “to-go” meal offered to members and visitors. These individually-portioned meals are courtesy of Redeemer’s resident Chef & LCFM Kitchen Manager, Michael Clarke, and Carlyle’s Catering. Although one of Atlanta’s foremost catering and food management companies, Carlyle’s has more humble roots. This highly regarded company started as an ice cream and sandwich shop! Founded in 1976 as a family business for the lunchtime crowd, they have grown to a full-service company with more than a dozen locations throughout the city. Carlyle’s recognizes what Redeemer and the Lutheran Community Food Ministry do for Atlanta’s Midtown community and beyond.
Through hot meal donations and volunteer efforts, our partnership with Carlyle’s helps us feed Midtown’s unsheltered/homeless neighbors as well as food insecure seniors, college students, and more. Every once in a while, extra meals are offered to those of us fortunate enough to be at Redeemer on a particular Sunday morning! CONGREGATIONAL CARE VINEYARD RESTRUCTURING IN 2022
Redeemer’s Vineyard Ministry met one of our greatest needs during the beginning of the pandemic: connecting with Redeemer members. The Vineyard Leaders called and emailed members, notified the staff about births and pastoral needs, and arranged groceries, meals, and rides. Redeemer’s Vineyard Leaders extended the care of our church during an incredibly difficult time. Thank you, Vineyard Leaders, for your ongoing care and support! Through the Vineyard initiative, we saw the greatest responses of engagement when specific needs were requested from the Redeemer community (such as meals and rides). We also heard that many people had found their “vineyard” or supportive faith community in small groups that were not determined by geography but rather by shared interest. Through choir, Lutheran Community Food Ministry, bible study, small groups, WELCA Northside Circle, Stephen Ministry, and more, members of Redeemer have found their “vineyard” or places of belonging.
CONGREGATIONAL CARE Therefore, this year, we are restructuring the Vineyards from an ongoing ministry to a structured roster that ministries can call upon when specific needs arise. Here are some examples of ways the Vineyards can support Redeemer members and ministry: A Lenten small group leader chooses to host the study in their home in Acworth, so they use the Vineyard roster to invite nearby Redeemer members to participate. A member has surgery in Lawrenceville, so the Caring Hands Coordinator invites Redeemer members who live nearby to provide rides to rehab therapy. A new member is joining the church, and the New Member Coordinator may look through the vineyard where the new member lives to invite someone to become a Shepherd to help the new member become engaged at Redeemer. A member cannot drive to church anymore, so we may look at a vineyard roster and call a family who regularly comes to the same church service to offer this person a ride. Keystone ministry is looking to organize dining out opportunity in Stone Mountain. The invitation would go out to the whole church; then, we would send a personal email to Redeemer members who live near Stone Mountain. Redeemer Vineyards will continue to provide ways for members to connect, although Vineyard Leaders will no longer be called upon for ongoing communication with their vineyard members. There will also be a slight restructuring in Realm. The Vineyards will be renamed to reflect the neighborhoods or cities members live in instead of the leader’s name. Each vineyard will also be grouped into regions to assist with communication. For a complete list of the vineyards and regions, click here. Led by Kat Folk, a trained presenter in suicide awareness and prevention. Kat teaches suicide prevention classes throughout the southeast and is passionate about the health and safety of our young people.

The second leading cause of death amongst 18-30-year-olds is suicide. That is enough to concern any parent of a young adult. Our young adults have struggled mightily of late—anxiety, depression, emotional and social stressors, not to mention dealing with a pandemic. Our young people are experiencing more challenges than ever before. How can we help? Come to this workshop to learn some basic warning signs and tools to help you engage with the young people in your life who are experiencing anxiety, depression, or thoughts of suicide. No matter the age of your children or the children you work with, you are welcome to attend this workshop.

One of the greatest gifts with which we are blessed is the generosity of our church family. Each week families and individuals give faithfully to support the mission and ministry of Lutheran Church of the Redeemer. One of the ways we honor these precious gifts is to make sure they are carefully counted and recorded each week.
Our two teams of gardeners are asking for your help! For so many years we have benefited from a dedicated group of volunteers who meet on a monthly basis to weed, plant, and otherwise make sure that we present a welcoming and beautiful property to our neighbors and members alike. Now we need to replenish our teams and so we are seeking folks who like to work outside with a joyful, creative, and dedicated team. And if you have the gift of organizing and communication to help teamwork efficiently, all the better! Best of all, no experience is necessary! Now that we are emerging from COVID isolation, we are reactivating our inperson counting teams. We are looking for individuals who can come to Redeemer on Wednesday during the day and help count our offering and other gifts of support. The task will take no more than one hour each week. We hope to form up to four teams of 2 people each so that each person will serve once a month. You will receive all the instruction you will need.
