LUTHERAN CHURCH OF THE REDEEMER

The Worship Ministry Team held its spring worship retreat on the afternoon of May 18 with a visit to the exhibit titled Singing the Sacred at the Pitts Theology Library at Emory’s Candler School of Theology. The exhibit showcases Southern songbooks and hymnals published between 1850 and 1925, representing the diverse vocal music making of the era, including shape-note singing. A tour of the exhibit was led by a leading researcher and curator of this material at Emory, Dr. Jesse Karlsberg. We covered the ways in which these materials were published and used by various churches, singing schools, singing societies, and other groups. It was a fascinating afternoon, and our group was most appreciative that Emory was willing to open the exhibit just for us while the library was closed between semesters.
Coming attraction: Dr. Bo Manly Adams, the director of the Pitts Library, also offered additional information about the library’s collections, particularly the extensive Reformation and Martin Luther-related materials the library holds. This collection was begun by Richard and Martha Kessler, former members of Redeemer. Stay tuned for fall publicity on the Pitts Library’s Reformation Symposium, a daylong event held during the last week of October every year. Date and details to be announced!
