MESSAGE FROM OUR SENIOR PASTOR I think John can be forgiven for having his doubts. After all, he sits in prison, and his perspective is limited. He is not able to observe all that Jesus is accomplishing firsthand. Can you imagine how he felt when his disciples did return with the

amazing news of everything Jesus was accomplishing to enact the kingdom of God?

In a sense, this annual book of reports is our attempt to share

the full account of everything happening at Lutheran Church of the Redeemer as we continue to live into God's kingdom. After all, very few of us are able to experience the full range of

activities and programs that happen each day as we continue When John heard in prison what the Messiah was doing, he sent word by his disciples and said to him, 'Are you the one who is to come, or are we to wait for another?' Our Annual Report is organized around three main topics for

each ministry team and organization: the highlights of ministry in 2022, hopes for the future, and a listing of the staff and

volunteers in each area. If you are moved by a particular report and want to get involved, please don't hesitate to contact the staff or leader of that ministry.

Most of us experience life at Lutheran Church of the Redeemer primarily on Sunday mornings. And this year, that has been a visible affirmation that Christ's spirit flows through our community.

The most significant change this past year was to our Sunday worship schedule. Moving to a two-service schedule with a

dedicated faith formation hour in between has really brought a

new feeling of liveliness to our weekly gathering. Each month we

have seen an increase in in-person attendance; meanwhile, the number of those joining us worldwide via Livestream continues to remain steady.

With a dedicated faith formation hour, we have been able to

expand our offerings for all ages. When you stand in the Sims Atrium and look around, you see groups of all sizes gathering

for study and support. From Sunday School to Confirmation to

High School to Adult Education, this expansion of our mission to Grow Faithfully has brought challenges as we struggle to find space for everyone each week. It's a good thing we have a WWW.REDEEMER.ORG

MESSAGE FROM OUR COUNCIL PRESIDENT Dear Redeemer Members, Friends, and Family, As I think back on all the acts of prayer, fellowship, kindness, and service I witnessed in 2022 from the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer congregation I am overwhelmed by a sense of the Holy Spirit.

Throughout the pages of this Annual Report are reminders of how God uses Redeemer for His work.

It is wonderful to witness the impact of Redeemer’s ministry teams. The Worship ministries center us in worship and the Gospel’s message of grace. Our Faith Formation teams help all of God’s children —from preschool to adults—learn, grow in, and apply the Christian Faith in their lives. Our Congregational Care teams help us deepen our relationships with one another and welcome others into our community. Our Community Engagement teams support and strengthen the work of numerous spiritual partners and service organizations to support those in need, social action and advocacy, community collaboration, learning, and spiritual growth. Our Support teams ensure the sustainability and long-term vitality of Redeemer’s witness and mission.

Our fall theme, “A Place for You,” underscored our invitation to open wide Redeemer’s doors to all who may come. As we settled into the “new normal,” we enjoyed the renewed energy of our sanctuary, the Sims atrium, and small groups as many returned to in-person activities. At the same time, our media ministry and hybrid capabilities continued to attract many to our church family from afar and to offer new ways for our members to engage with each other. These relationships, along with God’s grace, sustained us through the pandemic, as they will sustain our congregation into the future.

As we look to the future, it is humbling to consider the collective talent, spirit, service, and resources —people, financial, and property—that Redeemer is blessed with. These blessings and assets, along with Redeemer’s 100+ year legacy of building impactful ministries such as the Lutheran Community Food Ministry, Lutheran Towers, and Goshen Valley create an incredible springboard to support Redeemer’s future mission and work. The opportunities are boundless.

As we therefore have opportunity, let us do good to all people.” Galatians 6:10 This year we initiated important steps to seize our opportunities and to sustain and expand Redeemer’s impact for decades. One of those steps—the launch of our Campus Master Planning process—brought together hundreds from our congregation and community to envision how our property and assets can be used to enhance our ministries over the next 50 years. While we still have much work to do, this process will ultimately allow us to use our church, our unique location in Midtown Atlanta, and the value of these assets that have been stewarded over many years to best deliver our vision that “Through Redeemer, the world will see Jesus.”

“I am incredibly grateful for our pastors, staff, church council, ministry team leaders, and all of our members who join together to help each other grow faithfully and serve boldly in our community and beyond. I am excited that we welcomed 44 new members to Redeemer this year. Personally, I am so thankful for the new and deepened relationships I have made this year— you have lifted my spirits and supported my own personal journey of faith and service.

Finally, I give thanks for my experience this year as Council President. I hope as you read this Annual Report that you are inspired by the works and relationships that Redeemer built in 2022, and that you will find new ways to engage in our congregation and ministries in 2023.

Highlights of 2022

Worship Team

The worship and music highlights of 2022 were, most assuredly, our special festival

Sundays: Easter, Reformation, and Christmas Eve. The Redeemer Choir was back in the chancel. We didn't have to require attendance limits or reservations. The bells, brass,

organists, and jazz trio played, the children sang, and we had special fellowship times in the Sims atrium and during breakfasts in Zittrouer Hall. The pastors, Altar Guild, ushers,

lectors, communion assistants, and youth all led our worship with excellence. Chrismon, lily, and poinsettia decorators made our highest holy seasons special. It was such a joy to be

together again, and we welcomed a great number of visitors. Each joyful step through the seasons also came with our live stream/hybrid program so everyone could participate

safely. We are grateful to ALL who made these moments and this progress, both in-person and remotely, possible!

Other special milestones of 2022

Our youth returned to leading some of our services as acolytes, crucifers, banner bearers, Bible bearers, and ushers.

The Sunday Service task force helped us work out a plan for both organ and jazz

services and a dedicated faith formation hour in between, so that everyone now has an opportunity to both worship and attend Sunday School, confirmation, or other classes.

We celebrated Rejoicing Spirits' second anniversary, which began in February 2020.

Family memorials and baptisms continued in-person. It was quite meaningful that families could gather again for these events.

Hopes for 2023

Worship's most significant need for the new calendar year is to get more of our

volunteers re-involved and engage new volunteers. We have a great, dedicated core group of volunteers, but they need and will gladly welcome more to the fold!

Digital Media Ministry In 2022, we continued to worship, learn, connect, give, and pray together through

Redeemer's "other front door," leveraging the online experiences provided by the Digital Ministry Team as we emerged from the pandemic. Our members became more

comfortable with streaming worship, faith formation, events, and meetings as an

option for in-person attendance, so we continued to improve the production quality

and capability of our digital events and strived to reach a broader audience outside the walls of 731 Peachtree.

As a result, our mission expanded from just providing remote access. As a Ministry

Team, we realized we could now make and maintain a connection to the church for those who cannot attend - regardless of their situation, challenge, or need. Digital Ministry was now a digital extension of member care and outreach for us.

At my age, this has become the greatest thing I could've ever imagined. Even at the

pandemic's beginning, I felt that Redeemer handled remote worship and meetings well.

It's like I'm there. I feel very connected, especially with Zoom communion after service.

But it's more than that. I take classes, and I have meetings with Pastors. I know what's

happening because I can still "be there." You see, I live by it because I can't be there. So thank you!

Whether from their computers, smart TVs, tablets, or phones - members wanted to attend, learn, participate, and vote with the ability to do so remotely. This required us to expand

the AV production team to a combination of paid and volunteers, as well as upgrade the tools and technology to do so. As the saying goes, Digital Ministry takes a village. We

would like to thank and recognize the folks that kept members and visitors alike connected to Redeemer in 2022 and continue to do so.

Friends of Music Highlights of 2022 This year's Friends of Music (FOM) concert series demonstrated the ever-meaningful

importance of music in our lives. From the rich legacy of composers Lutherans claim as their own, to the scary excitement of Pipe Screams, to the beloved Harvest Home, each concert brought our Friends of Music community together. "Together" in January 2022

meant face-to-face with friends we had not seen in person for a while. In seeing these

faces again, we felt the love of Jesus and were grateful for the hugs, handshakes, and the sharing of our love of music in Redeemer's beautiful space.

We heard from one of our Friends in the larger community, speaking about the Harvest

Home concert; "We hire a babysitter every November so we can attend the Harvest Home concert. We always have a great time at the concert, seeing many friends, enjoying the music, and eating tasty pie afterward!"

The Redeemer Concert Series sponsored five concerts in 2022

All of the concerts were hybrid, and like in 2021, the series attracted many online and an increasing number of in-person music lovers.

Létourneau Anniversary Organ Concert, January 28th

GRAMMY-nominated artist Jan Kraybill, a musical leader, concert organist, pianist,

harpsichordist, and church musician, played a varied and beautiful program. Ms. Kraybill is an enthusiastic advocate for the power of music to change lives for the better. The inperson and online audience was 463.

Ensemble Chaconne, March 6th

Ensemble Chaconne returned to the Redeemer Concert Series with a unique offering. The program was a rare and compelling view of the music Shakespeare's audiences would have heard. The in-person and online audience was 154.

Bach Birthday Bash, March 18th

One of Redeemer's favorite traditions for over 25 years, the concert featured Redeemer's

talented musicians, including cellist Jonathan Fuller; Sarah Hawbecker, and Sam Long on both organ and piano; a vocal ensemble from the Redeemer Choir; and the Carillon Ringers handbell choir. The in-person and online audience was 136.

Pipe Screams, October 28th

Sarah Hawbecker and Redeemer's organ scholar, Kira Garvie, entertained children and

adults alike with great costumes and spooky music on the organ. The in-person and online attendance was 172.

Harvest Home Concert, November 19th

The Harvest Home Concert is Redeemer's musical celebration of Thanksgiving, a

quintessentially American holiday. The concert is designed to appeal to a broad audience, including community members who might not attend a church service. The in-person and online attendance was 593.

Hopes for 2023:

The Board will begin discussing contracting with a major artist or group for the 2024-2025

concert season. FOM has planned to do this approximately every three years (for example, The National Lutheran Choir performance at Redeemer three years ago).

Faith Formation Team 2022 was a very exciting year for the Faith Formation team as we saw the implementation of a dedicated formation hour between the 9:00 am Jazz service and the 11:00 am organ

and choir service. One of the most exciting days came during our fall kickoff when we saw

every available classroom in the building being used to contribute to Adult Faith Formation activities. It truly felt like a return to ‘the before times,’ and it helped kick off an exciting second half of the year that saw multiple new class offerings, new teachers, and new participants eager to learn and grow in their faith.

Midtown Lutheran Preschool

Building Community

Weekday ministry is more than educating children Monday through Friday; it supports the entire family through the early years of a child’s life and offers a place of belonging through the community. One of the most rewarding aspects of Midtown Lutheran

Preschool has been watching the community grow. We’ve always known the impact, but it has been extremely evident this past year as most pandemic stressors have lifted.

Early in Midtown Lutheran Preschool’s start, we had families stay on the playground after

school so children could get afternoon outdoor playtime. As more would stay each day, it

was obvious this time after school was as good for the children as it was for the adults to connect and get to know one another. Many friendships formed and grew out of this time together.

Another way we’ve noticed community is through our intentional in-person drop-off and

pickup. This allows our teachers to connect with adult caregivers of the students, forcing those caregivers to pass one another. As caregivers see each other daily, conversations

start, and soon you see folks going for coffee after drop-off and helping one another pick up a classmate if a parent is running late. This year we’ve seen not just parent

relationships grow, but friendships between nannies and au pairs, most of which are young adults from other countries coming here without friends or immediate family.

Lastly, pre-pandemic, we created times throughout the year when families could gather for the purpose of being together. Events like our Halloween Parade, Advent Family

Potluck, Open House, and End-of-Year party were all times to visit and connect. These were put on hold for the past couple of years and are now coming back!

During the pandemic, the lack of community was hard to watch. There was short drop-off and pickup, no playground time, and no events. As we had to keep our distance and be careful of outside congregating, many parents didn’t know one another – sometimes

even students in the same class. It was sad to see and was a hardship through COVID. So, last year when we re-opened the playground on a limited basis, we could have an end-of-year event. It was wonderful to see caregiver networks revive and begin flourishing again.

Highlights of 2022 Community rebuilding – from afterschool playground time to the return of our Endof-Year Party and Advent Family Potluck, we saw a return to normal gatherings that connect our preschool people!

Promoted seven Pre-K students to kindergarten.

Steady enrollment increase with a higher daily average of children attending in 202223 than school last year.

Our family body has seen some diversity re-growth. With the pandemic passing, we saw the return of international families from Georgia Tech.

Revival of many preschool families participating in Redeemer events like VBS, Monster Mash, St. Martin’s Day with the German Church, and Redeemer’s “Stars! Angels!

Shepherds! Kings!” Christmas program.

Children & Family Team

The Children & Family Ministry (CFM) team continued to help our families grow faithfully by offering flexible options to meet their needs. We were excited to gradually execute more and more events in a full, in-person format while keeping hybrid choices open for those families who needed it. The in-person format gained momentum as the year went on and we welcomed back families who had participated less during the pandemic and are now returning to a regular church routine, plus new families! For the past two years, our annual Monster Mash event has been executed in a heavily modified form to allow safety during the pandemic. We had a great time with over 100 people attending for our first time returning to the full event, which included outdoor games, dinner, our annual collaboration with Pipe Screams, and a dance party.

Highlights from 2022 We continue to gain positive energy as our families return to Sunday School in many forms: In-person, hybrid, and the monthly Sing & Play with combined classes and the popular Dad Band. Deacon Mary leads our Faith Stepping Stones classes for each grade and works with families to fulfill the promises made at Baptism.

Our CFM successfully hosted an abridged family retreat at Lutheranch in February 2022 with several families participating; even grandparents came! With the COVID-19 pandemic still a consideration, we shortened the weekend from two nights to one and packed in lots of outdoor time to create meaningful relationships with our families.

The Easter Vigil and Egg Hunt included a worship service, games, crafts, and the egg hunt, with eggs hidden by members of our youth. We were happy to include several of our Preschool families this year!

We resumed our collaboration with Redeemer Children's Music for the Christmas Program and hosted our annual Family Advent Celebration in the Sims atrium with brunch, crafts, cookie decorating, and breakfast.

Summer activities included a busy June with in-person Vacation Bible School and Redeemer Week at Lutheridge, where we welcomed Redeemer children grades 1- 5 and youth, plus Redeemer staff.

Hopes for 2023 Increase Vacation Bible School participation this year and offer After Care.

Continue safely hosting in-person opportunities to connect our families with meaningful ways to grow faithfully.

church (and the world) returned to more normal ways of doing things in the spring of 2022, it became clear that Sunday afternoon was not a viable time for the service

anymore since it required people to participate twice on the same day and was especially hard for our confirmands and high school youth. So, once again, this resilient and

compassionate team pivoted and worked with staff and other teams to find a new time for our monthly worship- during Faith Formation Hour. Flexibility and resilience are vital skills

for people with disabilities and their families, and one of the ways we can learn from them as we continue to worship joyfully! ·

Youth & Family

Many stories were true God moments for us at our Middle School Mission Trip in

Birmingham, Alabama. One that sticks out to our group is our homeless simulation service activity. We were tasked with surviving with a set amount of money for the whole day. Our group of seven (two adults and five kids) had $4 total to cover meals for the day.

We headed to downtown Birmingham in hopes of finding a grocery store. We discussed the possibility of making a profit by selling water bottles. Then, one of our Youth had the idea that we should get a loaf of bread, so we searched for a grocery store. Walking up

and down the streets, we realized that grocery stores are rare in an urban downtown. We

asked a local restaurant worker where the nearest grocery store was, and he suggested a Publix too far away.

We wanted to get two hot dogs to share between the seven of us but realized we didn’t have enough money. We decided to try a hot dog place that we had seen earlier. We

walked inside and explained our activity to the owner. Rather than turn us away, the owner told us: “I’ll make a deal. Don’t worry about the cost-we will make sure that it is $4.” We

were amazed and so happy that someone understood what we were doing and wanted to help us. Mr. Andrew (a patron) overheard our situation, wanted to ensure we could get more to feed all of us, and offered us $10. Another patron offered to help as well. We declined the extra money but were so appreciative.

As we went outside to eat our hot dogs, we stopped to talk to Mr. Andrew and learned he

was homeless. Mr. Andrew didn’t know us, yet he wanted to help by offering us the money

he had left. Our Youth saw a parable come to life! For our devotions that morning, our text had been from Mark 12: 41-44 (The Widow’s Offering).

This story was a God moment and a remarkable experience. So many people wanted to help us. It’s been months since this happened, and we still reflect on Mr. Andrew’s

generosity, the owner’s kindness, and the other patrons who offered help. Our Youth went on this trip with a mission to serve boldly. Their faith was strengthened as strangers offered to serve them; what an incredible gift to bring home and share!

Young Adults "What's your type?" This question became part of the regular vocabulary of young adults at Redeemer as they gathered weekly for small group study this summer using the

Enneagram. The Enneagram is a personality tool identifying nine distinct ways people

move through the world. After identifying their personality type, each person read a daily devotional based on their number. In the weekly small group led by two young adults,

they shared their insights from the devotions that week and how their personalities (both the unhealthy and the healthy sides) showed up at work and informed their faith.

Throughout the summer, they came to understand themselves and one another better.

The Enneagram was just a tool that opened the group up to a deeper relationship with one another.

Keystone Ministry What do stained glass windows, Toni Morrison, historical Christian Mass, and chocolate banana cake all have in common? The Redeemer Keystone members shared their

expertise and passions with our community this year. Bob Gibeling, lifelong member of Redeemer, led a guided tour of the history of Redeemer through the architecture and

stained glass windows. Dr. Jay Lutz and Dr. Mike Bell both had rich careers in education and shared their passion for research and teaching with Redeemer during Faith

Formation this fall. Dr. Bell created a three-part study on the Evangelical Lutheran

Worship book and Dr. Lutz explored the influence of Baby Suggs, a matriarch in Toni

Morrison’s book “Beloved” across generations. Ms. Shirley Johnson was also an educator with special needs students, though she chose to share her love of baking. Ms. Johnson

started bringing sheet cakes to Keystone’s Time Together worship and lunch group, and

she expanded her generous baking to include Redeemer's spiritual ministry partners; first to college students during Grace House Campus Ministry free-coffee days, then to

families when their child completes cancer treatment with Christopher’s Haven. This coming year, Keystone Ministry hopes to discover more Keystone Members who are eager to share their experience, passion, and presence with Redeemer and our

community as we continue to build relationships that bridge generational divides.

Library Highlights from 2022 During this year we were able to purchase, catalog, and display 15 new social justice

books recommended by Pastor Bonnor to make our collection current and much more relevant. These were featured at the Fall kick-off, and they are now on display on our main book display shelves for check-out.

We continued to stock the Little Free Library we had previously installed at Lutheran Towers in 2020. It continues to be used and enjoyed by residents.

Once again, we were able to give a few new books to the residents at Wellspring Living.

Amy Carpenter again supplied us with names of some of their favorite authors and a title or two they asked for specifically.

We reorganized our entire Children's section. We placed them in colorful fabric bins

based on subject matter. This is a much more attractive venue now and is easier to use.

We owe a huge thank you to Valrie Sanders. While serving as interim receptionist she

labeled and helped organize the sections of the Children's books. She also "spruced up" the reading area by rearranging the furniture and even decorating the area, making a pleasant spot for members to meet in small groups or to just come in and read and relax. Thank you, Valrie! We appreciate you.

We currently have 50 books donated to the International Christian Prison Ministry.

You Are Not Alone: A Story of Collaborative Care

No one walks alone. This was a theme of the Out of Darkness Suicide Prevention Walk last November and the posture of Redeemer’s Congregational Care Ministry in 2022. With All Saints Episcopal Church, St. John’s Lutheran Church, and The Temple (Jewish Reform), Redeemer began the Midtown Interfaith Contemplative Collective to create

contemplative spaces in Midtown. Our first event was a Remembrance Labyrinth Walk honoring those who have died by suicide. Redeemer’s labyrinth, prayer, and wellness

ministries worked alongside our contemplative partners as we hosted the labyrinth walk

and discussion during suicide prevention and awareness month. As people slowly walked the labyrinth and others watched, waited, and prayed in a circle around them, it became a holy vision: no one walks alone.

Faithful Connections Faithful Connections Team's mission is to connect Redeemer members' interests,

experience, and passions with servant opportunities within our ministries, and even to begin new ministries! Through one-to-one conversations, members' life stories and

interests are shared, resulting in strengthened ministry teams and member fulfillment.

More than fifty such conversations with members in 2022 revealed a wide variety of

ministry experiences, passions, and new leadership potential. These conversations were expanded to include the 16 new members that joined us last Fall, revealing a broad

array of talents and prior experience just waiting to be utilized in Redeemer's kingdombuilding ministries.

The skills these members bring to service through Redeemer include App Development – Commercial Real Estate – Communications – Diversity & Inclusion Training – Health Policy – Marketing – Medicine – Nursing – Teaching – and many more. Our members are truly blessed to be a blessing to others! Thank you!

Lutheran Community Food Ministry

This year the Lutheran Community Food Ministry celebrated its 40th Anniversary of serving meals to our unsheltered guests in Zittrouer Hall. During that time, Redeemer volunteers and staff served over two million meals with the help of 60 Metro Atlanta churches, businesses, organizations, and schools. Almost every Lutheran Church in metro Atlanta has been involved with the LCFM. On a daily basis, we serve about 80-100 guests at the church and make 40 take-out meals for the Lutheran Towers residences. Over the past year, we have processed 150,000 lbs. of donated food worth an estimated $260,000.

Traditionally, the LCFM focused on providing a hot lunch each weekday to our unsheltered neighbors. In the last several years, we have expanded our ministry to include sharing donated groceries and prepackaged meals from our donating partners to the seniors who live in Lutheran Towers and STARstudents (Students Temporary Assistance and Resources) at Georgia Tech.

Our mission has been expanded, and we are adding more wrap-around services such as Second Helpings Atlanta, Hope thru Soap, and the Defenders Office of the City of Atlanta.

We also provide on regular basis socks, shirts, coats, hygiene kits, and counseling help. Our tagline is now "Beyond Soup."

This year we had to transition from take-out lunches, which were served during the peak of the pandemic, to in-house dining in Zittrouer Hall. When we moved back inside, new serving procedures were put in place to better serve our guests.

Twice a year, we host Grand Celebrations for our guests; at Thanksgiving and Christmas a special meal is prepared and social services are made available on the church grounds for our guests, a variety of such as showers, vaccines, clothing, counseling, etc. This year we had a special guest, Mayor Dickens, and his staff who also helped serve our guests.

Lutheran Towers

The Supportive Services department strives daily to provide exemplary services to the seniors of Lutheran Towers. Each day we strive to uphold the mission and vision of Lutheran Towers by

serving our residents. Supportive Services serve the core of the building. Whether it’s providing food during Monday Market, working the LT Store, following up with a sick resident, assisting in locating

resources, or helping families work through the aging process, Supportive Services strive to uphold the mission of Redeemer “To Grow Faithfully and Serve Boldly.”

Highlights from 2022 2022 was a year to remember! In the midst of the Pandemic, Lutheran Towers still found ways to be a trendsetter in the aging services arena. We would like to share several memorable highlights.

LT Store- The Lutheran Towers grocery store opened in January 2022, in what was once

used as storage space for residents and staff. Lutheran Towers partnered with Goodr to create a great shopping experience. The store was transformed to mirror a modern mini grocery store, complete with fresh produce, meats, dairy, dry food goods, and

nonperishable items. This is the first FREE on-site grocery store for seniors in the area.

The LT store serves an average of 250 residents per month. The store operates

Tuesday-Thursday from 11 am -1 pm. The LT Store has had a tremendous impact on the residents as it serves to fill the gap to help eradicate food insecurities at Lutheran Towers.

Covid Impact-The Supportive Services department worked diligently to keep the

residents and staff of Lutheran Towers safe during the pandemic by partnering with local pharmacies and healthcare professionals to offer on-site Covid vaccine and

booster clinics. Lutheran Towers was awarded a Covid Impact grant to further aid in

keeping the residents of Lutheran Towers safe by giving them access to a multitude of Covid resources.

Community Partnerships- In 2022, Lutheran Towers partnered with the High Museum of Art to provide on-site art classes to the residents. The residents participated in a 12week art class that was composed of Art History, techniques, instructor-led painting projects, and trips to the museum. The partnership was a success and remains a favorite among residents.

50th Anniversary- Lutheran Towers celebrated 50 years of providing safe, affordable housing to the seniors of Atlanta, GA. Residents were given the opportunity to

participate in numerous events and activities that led up to the 50th Anniversary

Celebration. Lutheran Towers was awarded a Proclamation from the City of Atlanta, setting November 4, 2022, as “Lutheran Towers Day” in the City of Atlanta, GA. The anniversary celebration was attended by residents, community partners, and the Lutheran Towers Board of Directors.

Looking Ahead

There were several great accomplishments for Lutheran Towers in 2022. We are looking forward to taking service coordination to new heights.

In the coming year, the supportive services department will collaborate with business

services to enhance the resident orientation experience to include in-person orientation designed to educate the residents on all rules and policies thoroughly.

Community Partnerships-Looking forward, Lutheran Towers strives to increase

partnerships within the community to assist in leveraging services and funds to benefit the seniors of Lutheran towers.

Programming and activities- The supportive services department has many great programs and activities planned for the upcoming year. Some of those programs

include onsite mental health services, access to medical personnel, trips, health fairs, arts and crafts, and more. Programs and events are designed to increase resident participation so that our residents are aging in place, independent, and thriving.

Physical Plant Department

REAC Inspections-The HUD REAC inspections took place in October of 2022. Lutheran

Towers had not been inspected since 2019-Pre-Pandemic. Lutheran Towers contracted

with US Housing Consultants to perform a pre-inspection. The Physical Plant staff worked

tirelessly to ensure that we received the best possible score. Through these efforts, many

important systems have been upgraded in order to continue the safe and quality housing that Lutheran Towers strives to provide.

Elevator Upgrades & Repairs- In 2022, the elevators received major upgrades and repairs.

All elevators were renovated by replacing the interior of the elevator cabs and replacing the flooring with durable carpet. Many internal components were replaced to ensure the proper operation of the elevators as well.

50th Anniversary- The Physical Plant department played a major role in setting up the

Lutheran Towers’ 50th Anniversary Celebration. From hanging banners to setting up the

room for the celebration, the physical plant department displaced tremendous teamwork in working with each department to ensure the success of the event. The physical plant

orchestrated an intense cleaning campaign to ensure that our building was sanitized, safe, and ready for visitors.

ADA Compliant Automatic door opening mechanisms were installed at each exit door to ensure the safety and accessibility of entrance/exit for seniors that have mobility

challenges. Installing these mechanisms allows the seniors additional time to enter and exit the building.

Laundry Room Upgrades-Major pumps were replaced to ensure that residents were able to continue to have onsite operational laundry accessibility.

Lutheran Towers had a great year. The Business Services Department oversees the

company's administrative, financial, and operational aspects administrative, financial and operational aspects of the company.

During the year 2022, Lutheran Towers completed a MOR (Management Occupancy Review)

seniors continuously, and amid the pandemic, Lutheran Towers applied for food grants and was awarded:

In 2022, Diversity and Justice Ministry (D&JM) finished a year-long training program with the award-winning Out of Hand Theater (OOHT). The OOHT training offered a monthly

gathering that was either a workshop, an evening play for discussion, or a group discussion and debrief of how one interacted with racism in our culture. This training helped to open the eyes of many members of our congregation to how racism was impacting them or allowed them to see its manifestations in our society.

D&JM also ventured to Atlanta’s National Center for Civil and Human Museum. This trip was followed by a two-hour discussion at Redeemer on our views and how they affected us— and confirmed the need for more travel and discussion to address racial injustice.

2023 is our year to have more discussion and travel. We plan to view and discuss D.W.

Griffith’s "Birth of a Nation" on two Saturday mornings in March. And a return of the Saturday morning Synod-wide book study. We also plan to visit the Peace and Justice Museum in

Montgomery, Alabama, walk across the Edmund Pettus bridge in Selma, Alabama, and visit the Birmingham Civil Rights Museum. If time permits, we will also try to venture to either

Washington D.C. or Memphis to visit those museums. If not, we will make that part of our learning travel for 2024.

Redeeming Grace For the past 11 years, Redeeming Grace has not only served to educate the congregation about the crime of child sex trafficking but has also worked within the Girls’ Residential

Program (ages 12 to 17) of Wellspring Living to play a part in the transformational care of these child survivors. At the request of the staff, we have led many classes on “life skills”

from nutrition to hygiene to project management. The class most requested over the years is Manners and Etiquette. Naysayers have been quick to make such comments as, “Those girls will never need to know manners – much less etiquette!” How wrong they are! This

class has proven to be the most popular among the girls as well as the staff. Do you know

the 6 S’s on how to introduce yourself to make a lasting and good first impression? Do you know how to deal with the rudeness of others and keep a conversation going in a good

direction? Have you forgotten the lost art of the thank you note? And table manners? The girls love unlocking the secret code of the table setting! Our girls have embraced these

skills, which they will take with them into a bright new future with confidence and boldness.

In addition to teaching life skill classes for the Wellspring Living girls, Redeeming Grace has in 2022:

Hosted a congregational legislative training workshop presented by Street Grace and attended 2022 Advocacy Day at the Georgia Capitol

Sponsored the annual Angel Tree in Sims Atrium and collected $2,100 in gifts and gift cards for the girls of Wellspring Living

Sponsored a workshop at PlantHouse Decatur for the Wellspring Living girls In 2023, Redeeming Grace would like to expand the role of advocacy and work more in

Georgia Tech Grace House Impact Story I have often heard that campus ministry is usually the first step a student takes towards defining their faith outside of their parent's house or a student giving organized religion one last chance before walking away entirely. From my fiveish years at Grace House, a

majority of our students fall largely into one of those two categories. We had a new to us

student begin joining us at the beginning of this past semester. From what I have gathered, they grew up in Georgia in an evangelical household, and over the course of their time at

Tech, they have been searching for an expression of faith that they can connect with. They began as many do; slowly, they came to coffee, then progressed to worship and small

group, and now they have become a regular fixture at our gatherings, and their voice is an important one in our community. They are preparing to graduate, and it will be bittersweet to see them go from here in a few short weeks.

Unfortunately, at Georgia Tech, mental health is a large problem; in my time at Tech, there

has been a suicide of a current student each year and most years each semester. The fall of '22 has sadly been no exception. Earlier this semester, the campus received news of a student who died by suicide. Over the course of my time at Grace House, we have

committed to hold a vigil for students who die by suicide as a way to mourn together,

provide support, raise awareness, and be reminded of the work at hand to improve as a

campus community. Since this is an ongoing crisis at Tech, we have had the opportunity to hold many vigils and found a worship order that includes speaking, prayer, silence, and

readings. At the end of each vigil, we have a time for silence and opportunities for anyone present to say a few words if they like.

As our vigil came to a close after our time of silence, I thanked everyone, and small talk was being made. After a minute of people talking, a voice rose above the rest, our new

student, asking if they could say a prayer. I said of course and then, for the next 2 minutes,

just lifted the most heartfelt, passionate, and compassionate prayer I have heard in a long time. You could tell they were channeling their evangelical upbringing in their prayer and

opening up to the Spirit at that moment. Their prayer was for all those suffering, for those that mental health is a challenge and a struggle; they prayed for vulnerable populations and that all might experience Christ's love, grace, mercy, and compassion! It was one of those moments where you could feel the Spirit moving and knew the moment was holy.

A long overdue re-working of the sanctuary electrical system, including new lighting, is planned for spring 2023. Early cost estimates are $90,000 but may be higher.

Under the leadership of Chair Fred Dressel and Church Treasurer Michael Bell, the Finance

Team had a busy year due to the challenges of members/visitors returning to Redeemer (in-person) following the Pandemic.

Highlights from 2022

The 2022 Budget Development process began in April

Provided oversight to the publication of the 2021 Audit

The Finance Team hosted a Ministry-wide Zoom meeting to review the Budget Development process in June

The draft 2022 Budget was developed in late summer/early fall, and in November, the Council approved the 2022 Budget

After two Listening Posts, the Congregation accepted the 2022 Budget

Directed Staff to pursue the Employee Retention Tax Credit (Nonprofits, including Churches, are eligible to receive the PPP and the ERTC)

Throughout the year, the Team monitored the Finances of Redeemer We look forward to a review of the 2021 Annual Audit (Spring 2022)

* COVID - Cares Act ERC Credit Explanation (line 6 of Unrestricted Revenues) In October 2022 we were notified by our Auditors that Lutheran Church of the Redeemer may be eligible to receive a financial credit from the Employee Retention Tax Credit. We were referred to Alpharesults, a company specializing in the ERTC. Alpharesults has specialized in Georgia State Tax Credits for over 20 years and focuses on the Employee Retention Credit (ERC).

What is the ERC? The federal government established the Employee Retention Credit (ERC) to provide a

refundable employment tax credit to help businesses with the cost of keeping staff employed. Eligible businesses that experienced a decline in gross receipts or were closed due to government orders and didn't claim the credit when they filed their original return can take advantage by filing adjusted employment tax returns. Both the IRS and the ELCA have determined that churches and other non-profits are eligible to apply for this credit.

Redeemer's Eligibility After submitting the appropriate documents, Alpharesults concluded that: "we determined you qualified for the ERC from Q1-Q3 2021 based on the gross receipts test. At this time, a very conservative estimate of the credit could have been in the $250k-$275k range. Due to the fact you did not take the PPP 2 loan in 2021, your actual credit ended up being higher as we could use all eligible wages in our calculations. The total of the 2021 credit is $347,199.35. We are working now on your 2020 credit as well."

Why is this recorded as income in 2022?

As the processing of the credit is still in process, it was decided to record a conservative estimate of $200,000 as additional revenue in 2023. In consulting our auditors, we were advised that the ERC proceeds should be recorded as revenue in 2022 and noted as a receivable in 2023. This recommendation was approved by the church council in the February 2023 meeting and to include this explanation in our annual financial report for 2022.

Memorial Funds

The Memorial Funds Treasurer and the Trustee Committee for Memorial Funds and

Designated Funds oversee the investment of designated funds and memorial funds.

Crawford Investment Counsel, Inc. in Atlanta actively invests our assets.

Crawford Investment Counsel uses a dividend growth strategy. They invest in high-

quality value stocks with above-average dividend growth and dividend yield over time.

The Committee adheres to the following investment guidelines:

Moderate risk (currently 65/35 ratio of stocks to bonds/cash in traded accounts) Conservative growth with income Preservation of capital

Examples of the use of designated and memorial funds in 2022 Master Planning – Funds from the sale of the CVI property across 4th Street had

been earmarked for future master planning efforts years ago. The time came this

year to engage firms to help the congregation share its ideas about what a future campus might look like.

Property Expenditures – Funds designated for property repair and maintenance were used around our aging church building.

Redeemer’s actively managed funds decreased by $808,561.40 in 2022, which reflects

about $771,500 in withdrawals approved by Congregation Council and just one percent in losses in the remaining portfolio. An additional $150,000 was accessed from the Operating Reserve in the 3rd Quarter to address revenue shortfalls. Congregation Council intends to repay the $150,000 in 2023.

Keeping losses down to one percent is notable given the difficult climate for stocks in 2022 and is a credit to the investment philosophy of Crawford Investment Counsel.

Indeed, Wall Street had its worst year since 2008. Inflation and aggressive interest rate hikes from the Federal Reserve drove down investor sentiment all year. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down about 8.8%, the S&P 500 dropped 19.4%, and the Nasdaq sank 33.1% in 2022.
