Holden Evening Prayer – May 25, 2022 The Order of Worship at 7:00 pm

We continue to monitor the latest information regarding the spread of COVID-19 in our community. At this time, the wearing of face coverings onsite is optional and left to personal preference. Knowing that individuals and families have varying needs at this time, the balcony is reserved as a mask-required area. Please use the links available on the viewing page to let us know that you are worshiping with us, to submit any prayer requests, to let us know if you need help or are available to help a neighbor, and to continue giving financially to support the ongoing ministries of Redeemer. As always, we pray that worship at Redeemer is a blessing for you, even as your participation blesses us, whether we gathering in the name of Christ in-person or online. As you are comfortable, we encourage you to sing the hymns and to sing or speak the congregational portions of the liturgy in bold type. Evening Thanksgiving

Lamenting Gun Violence Given the tragic events of yesterday in Uvalde, Texas, we raise our voices in lament: God, giver of life, you intend for humans to live together in peace. In this time of grief over gun violence, we pray for your presence among us. That, trusting in your mighty and gentle healing, we may live in hope, we pray: make us instruments of your peace. God of resurrection, we remember before you those who have died in Uvalde, Texas, and all who have died by violence in every place. We commend them to your eternal love. Grant healing and wholeness to the survivors who are wounded or traumatized, and restore all whose spirits are maimed by such violence. That we may serve as your arms of care to those in distress, we pray: make us instruments of your peace. God of righteousness, you have laid on our elected leaders the responsibility to protect our land. Strengthen their devotion to our common life, and guide legislators to enact policies that address our plague of gun violence. That our government may support our search for domestic harmony, we pray: make us instruments of your peace.

God of compassion, we give you thanks for first responders, for police officers, firefighters, EMTs, and all who offer compassionate aid in situations of tragedy. Keep them safe from harm, and give them courage and sound judgment as they act. That we may join in support of those who risk their lives for others, we pray: make us instruments of your peace. God of forgiveness, we ask your mercy on Salvador Ramos. With your grace, transform those who from malice or illness inflict violence on others. Console their families. Believing in your power to make all things new, we pray: make us instruments of your peace. God of the promise in word and sacrament, we pray for the church. Give us a voice, your voice, to plead for a society marked by justice and sustained by cooperation among diverse peoples. Train us to resist the lure of brute force. That by your Spirit we may become words and signs of your mercy, we pray: make us instruments of your peace. God of true might and redemptive mercy, receive our prayers, and grant us to become your instruments of peace, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. From sundaysandseasons.com. Prayer O Gracious God in Heaven, you sent your apostles to be gentle among us, like a nurse tenderly caring for her children: Be with us now as we seek to care for the sick, the oppressed, and the broken hearted, that they might be healed by the touch of your saving embrace; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. | Amen.

The Readings: During this season of Eastertide, we will proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ with attention toward women. The first witnesses of the resurrection were women, and yet they were nearly forgotten after Easter morning. Were they not too part to the community of early believers? What about other women? We will read original, gender-expansive translations of scripture by Wilda C. Gafney from A Women’s Lectionary for the Whole Church and offer prayers from Women’s Uncommon Prayers: Our Lives Revealed Nurtured Celebrated. Psalm 145:8-19 8 Full of grace and a mother’s love is the MOTHER OF ALL, slow to anger and abounding in faithful love. 9 The WOMB OF LIFE is good to all, and her mother-love is upon all she has made. 10 They shall praise you, WELLSPRING OF LIFE, all your works, and all your faithful shall bless you. 11 Of the glory of your majestic rule shall they speak, and your might shall they declare, 12 to make known to the woman-born her mighty works, and the glorious splendor of her majestic rule. 13 Your majesty is an everlasting majesty, and your sovereignty endure throughout all generations. [Blessed be the LIVING GOD and blessed be her name forever and ever.] Faithful is the EVER-LIVING GOD in all her words, and gracious in all her deeds. [Blessed be the LIVING GOD and blessed be her name forever and ever.] 14 The MERCIFUL ONE upholds all who fall, and raises up all who are bent over. 15 The eyes of all look to you, and you give them their food at the right moment. 16 You open your hand, and satisfy the desire of every living thing. 17 The FAITHFUL ONE is righteous in all her ways, and loving in all her works. 18 The EVER-PRESENT GOD is near to all who call on her, to all who call on her in truth. 19 The desire of all who revere her she fulfills; and their cry she hears and delivers them. John 11:17-27 17 When Jesus arrived [in Bethany], he found that for four days Lazarus had already been in the tomb. 18 Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles away. 19 So, many of the Judeans had come to Martha and Mary to console them about their brother. 20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she met him; however Mary remained at the house. 21 Martha said to Jesus, “Rabbi, if you had been here, my brother would never have died. 22 Yet even know I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you.” 23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise.” 24 Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise in the resurrection on the last day.” 25 Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life. The ones who believes in me, even though they die, they will live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” 27 She said to him, “Yes, Rabbi, I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who comes into the world.” Homily

The Annunciation: Luke 1:26-28, 30-32, 38 Sung as solo An angel went from God to a town called Nazareth to a woman whose name was Mary. The angel said to her, "Rejoice, O highly favored, for God is with you. You shall bear a child, and his name shall be Jesus, the Chosen One of God Most High." And Mary said, "I am the servant of my God, I live to do your will. The Magnificat

Prayers of Intercession: Let us pray for the church, the world, and all of creation, Holy and faithful God, you have called women to serve, lead, preach and prophesy throughout generations. Embolden the church to shatter the stained-glass ceilings so women may continue to faithfully witness your good news. We pray especially for presiding bishop, Elizabeth Eaton. Silence Merciful God, | Hear our prayer. Holy and gracious God, you created us in your image. Help us to recognize and honor your image in ourselves, in one another, and in the bountiful creation you established. Mold us in your will to defend and nurture the earth and her many delicate ecosystems. Silence Merciful God, | Hear our prayer. Holy and merciful God, hear our prayers for our sisters who are silent because of oppression, those who feel that their voices are not heard, and those who bear the brunt of war, that they may live in justice and peace. Silence Merciful God, | Hear our prayer. Holy and life-giving God, look with compassion on all those in this world and in our communities who are suffering from violence, abuse, disease, and hardship of any kind. We especially pray for… Silence Merciful God, | Hear our prayer Holy and ever-living God, we give you thanks for the love and wisdom of our foremothers, for those who we have loved and died, and we rejoice in the communion of our sister saints (especially). We give you thanks especially for the women pioneers—for the deaconesses, missionaries, pastors, bishops, and church workers who ministered in your name. Silence Merciful God, | Hear our prayer. Almighty God, mighty mother and tender father, receive these prayers of your children. Amen.
