Seventh Sunday after Pentecost – July 11, 2021 The Order of Worship at 9:00 am As the spread of COVID-19 in our community has slowed, we have gradually offered in person, small group gatherings following the guidelines provided by our COVID-19 Taskforce. We continue to offer communion over Zoom for those who cannot gather in-person. As we open worship to in-person attendance, we will continue to exercise the same care that has protected us through the past year: limiting the number of people, the duration of the service, and providing safe seating. At the same time, we will continue to stream our services live for those who cannot be present. We will use the same bulletin for in-person and remote participants. Please use the links available on the viewing page to let us know that you are worshiping with us, to submit any prayer requests, to let us know if you need help or are available to help a neighbor, and to continue giving financially to support the ongoing ministries of Redeemer. As always, we pray that worship at Redeemer is a blessing for you, even as your participation blesses us, whether we gathering in the name of Christ inperson or online. As you are comfortable, we encourage you to sing the hymns and to sing or speak the congregational portions of the liturgy in bold type. O Lord, you have brought me out of darkness, and gave me a second chance. Give thanks to the Lord! For his anger is temporary, while his love is eternal. As for me, I can walk my own path! THE GOSPEL Mark 6:14-29 As Jesus and his disciples begin to attract attention, Mark recalls the story of John the Baptist’s martyrdom. Like John, Jesus and his disciples will also suffer at the hands of those opposed to the gospel of salvation. The Holy Gospel according... | Glory to you, O Lord. King Herod heard of [the disciples’ preaching,] for Jesus’ name had become known. Some were saying, “John the baptizer has been raised from the dead; and for this reason these powers are at work in him.” But others said, “It is Elijah.” And others said, “It is a prophet, like one of the 4

prophets of old.” But when Herod heard of it, he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has been raised.” For Herod himself had sent men who arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, because Herod had married her. For John had been telling Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” And Herodias had a grudge against him, and wanted to kill him. But she could not, for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he protected him. When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed; and yet he liked to listen to him. But an opportunity came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his courtiers and officers and for the leaders of Galilee. When his daughter Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests; and the king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it.” And he solemnly swore to her, “Whatever you ask me, I will give you, even half of my kingdom.” She went out and said to her mother, “What should I ask for?” She replied, “The head of John the baptizer.” Immediately she rushed back to the king and requested, “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.” The king was deeply grieved; yet out of regard for his oaths and for the guests, he did not want to refuse her. Immediately the king sent a soldier of the guard with orders to bring John’s head. He went and beheaded him in the prison, brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Let us come before the triune God in prayer. O God, bless the church throughout the world. Protect everyone who attends church camps throughout the summer and provide meaningful worship for the campers. Lord, in your mercy, | hear our prayer. Bless the earth. Moderate the intense heat, give shade and breezes to all, and send necessary rain to nourish the crops. Preserve farm laborers as they work each day under the sun. Lord, in your mercy, | hear our prayer. Bless all who are sick or suffering. Comfort the survivors of disaster or gun violence. Protect us from the Delta variant of the coronavirus. Visit all who are imprisoned, and accompany all persons who struggle with addiction and mental illness. Receive our prayers for . . . . Lord, in your mercy, | hear our prayer. 6

Bless all who are celebrating reunions this summer and joyous occasions. We praise your name, O God, and give you thanks for… Lord, in your mercy, | hear our prayer. Bless this holy house and all those who worship here. We pray for your blessing upon those whose efforts behind the scenes often go unnoticed; for the custodians and maintenance workers, for our office staff, the Lutheran Community Food Ministry staff, and for all of our volunteers.
