Second Sunday after Pentecost – June 6, 2021 The Order of Worship at 9:00 am As the spread of COVID-19 in our community has slowed, we have gradually offered in-person, small group meetings like our Vineyard communion services with safety measures to protect all participants. At the same time, we have offered communion over Zoom for those who cannot gather in-person. As we open worship to in-person attendance, we will continue to exercise the same care that has protected us through the past year: limiting the number of people, the duration of the service, and providing safe seating. At the same time, we will continue to stream our services live for those who cannot be present. We will use the same bulletin for in-person and remote participants. Please use the links available on the viewing page to let us know that you are worshiping from home, to offer any prayer requests, to let us know if you need help or are available to help a neighbor, and to continue to give to support the ministries that continue, socially distant for the common good. As always, we pray that worship at Redeemer is a blessing for you, even as your participation blesses us, even though we are not together in person. As you are comfortable, we encourage you to sing the hymns and to sing or speak the congregational portions of the liturgy in bold type. CHILDREN’S SERMON THE READING Genesis 3:8-15 Immediately after Adam and Eve eat the forbidden fruit, they hide from God. Neither takes responsibility for their sin, instead blaming each other, the snake, and even God. The curse on the snake was understood as a messianic prophecy by the early church, who associated Eve’s “offspring” with Christ. [Adam and Eve] heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden at the time of the evening breeze, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. But the LORD God called to the man, and said to him, “Where are you?” He said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.” He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate.” Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent tricked me, and I ate.” The LORD God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you among all animals and among all wild creatures; upon your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Let us come before our triune God in prayer. A brief silence. God of wholeness, inspire the church around the world and give your holy vision to all believers as we witness your saving grace. We especially pray for our bishop, Kevin Strickland, our churches and all leaders of the South Eastern Synod following our synod assembly yesterday. Lord, in your mercy, | hear our prayer. God of the cosmos, nourish all of creation; the gardens, waterways, creatures and diverse forms of life that remain unseen. Lord, in your mercy, | hear our prayer. God of justice, on this anniversary of D-Day, we ask you to bring an end to warfare throughout the world. Halt the violence between nations, on our streets, and inside our homes. Lord, in your mercy, | hear our prayer. God of abundance, we pray for those who are oppressed or in any need. Encourage those who have begun to lose heart, rejoice with those who are rejoicing, and mercifully tend to those we name before you... Strengthen and renew us with your Spirit.
