HYMN 726 Light Dawns on a Weary World (stanzas 1 & 2)

DIALOGUE

(based on Ps. 18:28; 27:1; 97:11; 119:105; 36:9; and Isa. 2:5)

It is you who light my lamp; you, my God, who lights up the darkness.

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom then shall I fear?

The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

Light dawns for the righteous, and joy for the honest of heart. Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light.

O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the Lord!

OPENING PRAYER

Everlasting God, the radiance of all faithful people, you brought the nations to the brightness of your rising. Fill the world with your glory, and show yourself to all the world through him who is the true light and the bright morning star, your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. | Amen.

LESSON Exodus 13: 17-22

When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them by way of the land of the Philistines, although that was nearer; for God thought, ‘If the people face war, they may change their minds and return to Egypt.’ So God led the people by the roundabout way of the wilderness towards the Red Sea. The Israelites went up out of the land of Egypt prepared for battle. And Moses took with him the bones of Joseph, who had required a solemn oath of the Israelites, saying, ‘God will surely take notice of you, and then you must carry my bones with you from here.’ They set out from Succoth, and camped at Etham, on the edge of the wilderness. The Lord went in front of them in a pillar of cloud by day, to lead them along the way, and in a pillar of fire by night, to give them light, so that they might travel by day and by night. Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left its place in front of the people.

LESSON Isaiah 60: 1-6

Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. For darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the Lord will arise upon you, and his glory will appear over you. Nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn. Lift up your eyes and look around; they all gather together, they come to you; your sons shall come from far away, and your daughters shall be carried on their nurses’ arms. Then you shall see and be radiant; your heart shall thrill and rejoice, because the abundance of the sea shall be brought to you, the wealth of the nations shall come to you. A multitude of camels shall cover you, the young camels of Midian and Ephah;

all those from Sheba shall come. They shall bring gold and frankincense, and shall proclaim the praise of the Lord.

HYMN 314 Arise, Your Light Has Come!

LESSON Matthew 5:14-16

You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hidden. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.

LESSON

1 John 1:5-9

This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light and in him there is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with him while we are walking in darkness, we lie and do not do what is true; but if we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

HYMN 715 Christ, Be Our Light

RESPONSIVE PRAYER

Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon us.

Blessed are you, Pillar of Fire. You lead us out of bondage. Guide all leaders and nations through the wilderness ahead. Blessed are you, Radiant Dawn. You pierce the long night. Have mercy on the sick, the dying, and all who suffer this day. Blessed are you, Light of the World. You reveal our divine God in our ordinary world. Shine in our lives and illuminate our hearts that we may bear your light to all the world.

LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

BLESSING AND DISMISSAL

Let us bless the Lord. | Thanks be to God.

May you be filled with the radiance of Christ letting your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. Almighty God, Father, ☩ Son, and Holy Spirit bless you now and forever. | Amen
