MURDERED & MISSING INDIGENOUS WOMEN (MMIW) REDDING RANCHERIA

May 5th is significant in recognition of the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) Day that is dedicated to creating awareness for this epidemic.

The MMIW is significant in Indian Country because it is a crisis that has left thousands upon thousands of indigenous women/men missing or murdered. We have changed the colors of the Redding Rancheria Tribal Office and the Win-River Resort & Casino’s “Basket” to red to honor those missing, murdered and the families affected.

REDDING RANCHERIA RETURNS REMAINS OF OUR ANCESTORS BACK TO THEIR ORIGINAL RESTING AREA REDDING RANCHERIA

The Redding Rancheria Cultural Department is working with Dr. Thomas Torma from the University of California Berkley, Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act Liaison, to assist in returning the remains of our ancestors back to their original site. Last week they picked up 11 sets of remains. Most significant, an unidentified Wintu Woman (50-year old) with 5 children from newborn to age 5 who the Redding Rancheria and other local tribes will rebury this Wednesday, May 5, 2021 at 4:30 p.m. at the Arboretum side of Turtle Bay. This 50-year Wintu woman was murdered based on the damage done to her skull. We felt it was important to put her back to rest with the children that were with her when this brutal act happened upon her. We alongside other local Tribes, the Winnemem Wintu Tribe and the Wintu Tribe of California, will ensure she will be returned to her original resting area.

This is significant for the burial to take place on May 5th because this day is in recognition of the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) Day that is dedicated to creating awareness for this epidemic.

The Turtle Bay Exploration Park is featuring the Jingle Dress Exhibition (Glass Case with video component in the Museum) from May 1, 2021-September 6, 2021. This exhibition features the history, meaning and use, curated and presented by April Carmelo and the Life Center. The Jingle Dress tradition draws from the past to heal in the present, and more recently has been used to draw attention to the plight of missing and murdered indigenous women. Turtle Bay will have the Sundial Bridge lights turned red in honor of this day.

We appreciate the partnership with the Turtle Bay Exploration Park for allowing us to return her to the original site where she was first disturbed and sent to Berkeley.

The Community is invited to help with this healing process. It will be held on Wednesday, May 5th at 4:30 p.m. at the Arboretum side of Turtle Bay.

REDDING RANCHERIA HEAD START & CHILD CARE ENROLLMENT

It is time to start thinking about the 2021-2022 school year! Call us today at 225-8925 if you would like more information on the Redding Rancheria Head Start & Child Care. Or fill out a pre-application on the Redding Rancheria website at www.reddingrancheria-nsn.gov. Spots are filling up quickly! The Redding Rancheria offers a part day Native American Head Start program to eligible children at 1950 Redding Rancheria Rd. Children must be three years old by September 1st. The 21/22 school year will start on Wednesday, August 11th and follows the public school calendar. We have both a morning class and an afternoon class and look forward to returning to school Monday through Friday. Head Start is a federally funded program with strict eligibility requirements. Native American, special needs, 4 year olds and low income children have priority. There is no fee for the Head Start program.

We also offer a full day Child Care program at the same location for preschool age children whose parents or guardians are working at least 25 hours per week. The Child Care uses the same preschool curriculum and offers all of the same benefits and services as our Head Start program. The Child Care also follows a public school calendar. This is a subsidized program with fees based on a sliding scale. For families who are over the income ceiling we have a limited number of private pay spots available. Both programs offer the USDA “School Lunch” Program for meals and snacks to all participants at no extra charge. Limited transportation is also available by school bus. The Redding Rancheria Head Start and Child Care provides a safe, developmentally appropriate, nurturing environment for children that promotes kindergarten readiness, as well as a positive self-image, a love of learning, and a pride for their native culture.

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS REDDING RANCHERIA

The month of May is Mental Health Awareness Month. The purpose of Mental Health Awareness Month is to raise awareness and educate the public about Mental Illness, as well as convey the profound impact on Mental Health that has affected people of all ages during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Now, more than ever, it is critical to reduce the stigma around mental health struggles, because that stigma often prevents individuals from seeking help.

The Redding Rancheria Behavioral Health Department would like to provide you with the attached flier listing multiple resources. The Behavioral Health Department held a Mental Health Awareness Booth on Tuesday, May 18th in the lobby of the Redding Rancheria Tribal Health Center on Liberty Street to pass out information, positive notes, and goodies.

HISTORY OF WORLD ELDER ABUSE AWARENESS DAY REDDING RANCHERIA

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, or WEAAD, is an annual initiative launched on June 15, 2006, by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization. In its 66/127 resolution, the United Nations General Assembly designated that date as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, a day in which the entire world voices its opposition to any form of abuse of the older generation.

WEAAD aims to provide an opportunity for communities around the world to promote a better understanding of the abuse older people suffer by raising awareness of the cultural, social, economic, and demographic processes affecting them. Elder abuse is one of the least investigated types of violence and does not get addressed in national action plans as frequently as other key social issues.

The UN International Plan of Action described elder abuse as a public health and human rights issue. Globally we have an aging population, with the number of older people in the world expected to be 1.4 billion by 2030. Research suggests that 4 to 6 percent of the elderly suffer from some kind of abuse, most of which go unreported. This day is to make sure we remain focused on our elders, ensuring they lead a life of high quality and dignity.

Help spread the word for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15. It can be hard to imagine that anyone would deliberately want to harm an elderly person, but unfortunately, elder abuse is a widespread problem. Some instances of elder abuse are intended to exploit the person financially; you’ve probably heard of scams targeting seniors. In other cases, it’s simple negligence: Caregivers don’t provide the basic necessities, like nutritious food, appropriate medication, safety, or assistance with hygiene.

STICK HORSE RODEO

REDDING RANCHERIA HEAD START & CHILD CARE It’s rodeo month in Shasta County and our little cowpokes at the Redding Rancheria Head Start & Child Care had a chance to compete just like the pros in our annual Stick Horse Rodeo. Students created their own stick horse made from a sock and craft materials. Each horse was creatively decorated and had a name picked out to match. We kicked off rodeo day with a parade down Main Street (Redding Rancheria Rd). Parents, employees, residents and council members came watch our little cowboys and cowgirls as they showed off their ponies for the crowd. Back at the rodeo grounds (aka- the playground) students raced on their stick horses, galloping around the barrels as fast as they could ride. Parents cheered from the sidelines and to celebrate a great race our riders enjoyed a special treat and hay for their horses.

She was up through the night, building the entire website from the scratch in a single day. The site successfully scheduled 1000 vaccination appointments within 24 hours of launching the website.

we have come to enjoy from our websites, and she has positively impacted every single department (across all campuses) with her efficiency. Every change request that comes in she figures out how to implement in the quickest time possible, usually within a day.

She does work that usually takes an entire team to complete. She does everything with a smile on her face and an incredible can-do attitude.
