DENIM DAY DONATION DRIVE 2023

Redding R anche Ria

April 26, 2023 was Denim Day! A huge thank you the Shasta County District Attorney’s office and Briona Haney, the Community Education Specialist for helping us donate jeans for the Denim Drive to give to survivors of sexual assault. In addition, a huge thank you to our employees for bringing in SO much denim to donate!

Denim Day is a campaign in April in honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The campaign began after a ruling by the Italian Supreme Court where a rape conviction was overturned because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans she must have helped the person who raped her remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim. Peace over Violence developed the Denim Day campaign in response to this case and the activism surrounding it. Thanks to everyone for helping raise awareness for this cause.

REPATRIATION OF NATIVE ARTIFACTS

REDDING RANCHERIA

The Redding Rancheria was gifted three Wintu baskets and a Karuk Doll Basket from a donor that respects the process of repatriation of Native artifacts to their rightful owners. The following day, Cultural Director and Chairman, Jack Potter Jr. was then able to present the Karuk Tribe with the doll basket to return it to its rightful owner. Repatriation for Tribes is so important to restoring culture and teaching culture to our future generations. We are appreciative to be given back our baskets and honored to be able to give a basket back to its rightful owner.

WEEK OF THE YOUNG CHILD CELEBRATION

Re dding R anche Ria head STaRT & chiLd caRe

In celebration of Week of the Young Child, Redding Rancheria Head Start & Child Care students were given the opportunity to learn about the plant life cycle through a First 5 Shasta sponsored gardening project. This activity provided hands-on learning experience while encouraging our little ones to connect with nature. Parent Café funding allowed our staff to gift gardening supplies to families so that connection and learning can continue at home! By teaching children to take care of the environment from an early age, our staff aims to instill values that will stay with them throughout their lives.
