José Dominguez CEO, American Red Cross on Long Island

James P. Flannery Chair, Board of Directors, American Red Cross on Long Island

Welcome Dear Friends, It is our great privilege to welcome you to the 2026 Long Island Heroes Celebration. This event is one of the most meaningful moments of our year, as we come together as a community to recognize the everyday heroes who make Long Island stronger, safer and more compassionate. We are deeply moved by the stories we share today, stories of courage and quiet determination that reflect the very heart of the communities we know and love. The individuals we honor show us that heroism lives in everyday actions. Whether a first responder who acts decisively in a moment of crisis, a neighbor who steps up to give the gift of life to a stranger, or simply a human being who refuses to let their compassion be outcompeted by adversity — it is clear that Long Island is home to extraordinary people. This is the essence of the American Red Cross: a steadfast presence in times of uncertainty, driven by a deep commitment to serve with empathy and excellence. When disaster strikes, the Red Cross is here to offer shelter, food, emergency supplies and hope to help families start on their road to recovery after unimaginable disruption. When people want to be ready, the Red Cross is here to teach CPR, First Aid and other lifesaving skills and prepare communities for hurricanes, home fires and other disasters. When military members and their families need support before, during and after their service, the Red Cross is here to relay emergency communications which bring people home for births and funerals, help families cope with the tumult of military life and connect veterans with support reintegrating into civilian life. Thank you for being a part of this vital mission. Together, we are honoring our heroes. Together, we are building a stronger and more resilient Long Island. For more than 100 years, the Red Cross has served Long Island — and with your support, we will continue this work for decades to come. With gratitude,

José Dominguez CEO, American Red Cross on Long Island

James Quent Co-Chair, Long Island Heroes Celebration

Welcome A Message from the Long Island Heroes Celebration Co-Chairs Dear Friends, Welcome to the 2026 Long Island Heroes Celebration! We are honored that you have joined us today to recognize the incredible heroes who embody the very best of Long Island and to support the work of the American Red Cross. In this room with you today are dedicated community members who don’t hesitate to help their neighbors, who show remarkable courage and compassion with an unwavering commitment to service. This year, we are proud to honor: • Hon. Harvey Weisenberg, who has dedicated his life to advocating for people with disabilities; • Brandi M. Carney, LCSW, who has spent decades supporting veterans access health and mental health resources; • Officer Freddy Cerpa, who used lifesaving skills to help save a choking child on two separate occasions both on- and off-duty; • Susanne Deegan, who donated a kidney after overhearing a conversation in a restaurant; • Finn Schiavone, who overcame paralysis and has shared his story to encourage others; and • Tom Von Essen, who led the FDNY through the attacks of September 11th and continued his legacy by advocating for first responder health, safety and long-term support. Their stories remind us that heroism is not abstract. It is helping without hesitation. This reflects the very spirit of the Red Cross, and we are proud to celebrate these heroes today. Thank you for joining us today. The Red Cross relies on the engagement and generosity of our entire community to continue our lifesaving work, and we hope you leave this event feeling as inspired as we do. Gratefully,

Dear Honorees, It is my privilege to extend my heartfelt congratulations to each of you on being recognized at the American Red Cross Long Island Heroes Celebration. While each of your stories is unique, you share something truly remarkable: a willingness to step forward when others need help. Whether through a lifetime of public service, an act of extraordinary courage, a commitment to our veterans and first responders, or an inspiring journey of perseverance, each of you has made a meaningful difference in the lives of others. I am especially proud to see Harvey Weisenberg recognized with the Humanitarian Award. As a lifelong Long Beach resident, longtime public servant, and tireless advocate for individuals with disabilities, Harvey has devoted his life to asking a simple but powerful question: How can I help? Tom Von Essen, honored as a Community Impact Legacy Hero, represents decades of leadership and service, including his extraordinary work guiding the FDNY through one of the darkest chapters in our nation's history and his continued advocacy for the health and safety of first responders. Officer Freddy Cerpa, our First Responder Hero, demonstrated remarkable courage and quick thinking in saving two young children during life-threatening emergencies. His actions are a powerful reminder of the difference one person can make in a critical moment. Brandi Marie Carney, our Military Hero, has spent more than 25 years supporting veterans, military families, first responders, and those affected by trauma, offering countless individuals the hope, healing, and support they deserve. Susanne Deegan, our Help Can't Wait Hero, reminds us that sometimes the greatest acts of heroism begin with simply caring enough to help someone in need. Her decision to become a kidney donor gave another person a second chance at life. And Finn Schiavone, our Youth Hero, has shown extraordinary determination in overcoming adversity. His journey of recovery, perseverance, and purpose is an inspiration to people of every generation. It is an honor to celebrate all six of you. Thank you for reminding us that heroism is not defined by age, profession, or circumstance, but by the willingness to care, to serve, and to make a difference when it matters most. Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition, and thank you for all that you have done and continue to do for our community and beyond. With warmest congratulations,

Throughout his remarkable career as a lifeguard, police officer, teacher, and New York State Assemblyman, Mr. Weisenberg has consistently demonstrated an unwavering commitment to helping others. His advocacy and championship for individuals with disabilities have made a meaningful and lasting difference in countless lives. Congratulations to Tom Von Essen, recipient of the Community Impact Hero Award. As New York City’s Fire Commissioner during the tragic events of September 11, 2001, Commissioner Von Essen helped lead the FDNY through one of the most challenging moments in our nation’s history. His leadership, courage, and dedication to New York City and its first responders will forever be remembered. I also commend Officer Freddy Cerpa, recipient of the First Responder Hero Award, whose quick thinking and commitment to service have made an extraordinary impact. Officer Cerpa was credited with saving the lives of two young children experiencing lifethreatening choking emergencies. His actions demonstrate the courage and readiness that we depend upon from those who protect and serve our communities. Congratulations to Brandi Marie Carney, recipient of the Military Award, for her years of dedicated service supporting veterans, military families, first responders, and individuals impacted by trauma. Her commitment to those who have sacrificed and served our nation reflects a profound sense of compassion, responsibility, and gratitude. I extend my sincere congratulations to Susanne Deegan, recipient of the Help Can’t Wait Hero Award. Long Island Heroes Celebration remarkable testament to the power of compassion and the willingness to help another person in their greatest time of need. Her generosity serves as an inspiring reminder that one person’s kindness can change another person’s life forever. Finally, I congratulate Finn Schiavone, recipient of the Youth Hero Award, whose extraordinary journey of resilience and determination is truly inspirational. Following a devastating wrestling injury that left him paralyzed and unable to walk, talk, read, or write, Finn embarked on an incredible road to recovery. Through years of determination, rehabilitation, and perseverance, he regained his independence and returned to an active life. His story is a powerful example of the strength of the human spirit and an inspiration to people of all ages. Each of you represents what it means to be a hero not simply through extraordinary acts, but through a sustained commitment to serving, protecting, encouraging, and uplifting others. Your stories remind us that heroism can take many forms, from public service and emergency response to advocacy, generosity, leadership, and perseverance. On behalf of the residents of the 18th Assembly District, I congratulate the 2026 honorees and commend the American Red Cross for recognizing these exceptional individuals. May your accomplishments continue to inspire others to lead with courage, compassion, and a spirit of service. Wishing you all a wonderful celebration and continued success in the years ahead.
