Dear Friends,
It is my great honor to welcome you to the 2025 Long Island Heroes Celebration breakfast. This event is one of the most meaningful moments of our year a chance to come together as a community to recognize the everyday heroes who make Long Island stronger, safer, and more compassionate.
The individuals we honor today show us that heroism lives in everyday actions quiet moments of courage, generosity and resolve. Their impact is felt not in grand gestures, but in the lives they touch and the hope they restore. This is the essence of the American Red Cross: a steadfast presence in times of uncertainty, driven by a deep commitment to serve with empathy and excellence.
Every day, the Red Cross is here opening shelters, providing meals and supplies, and helping families recover after dis asters big and small. As our teams respond to home fires, support military families, teach lifesaving skills and help prepare communities, it is your commitment that ensures the Red Cross is ready when Long Island needs us most.
Thank you for joining us in honoring our heroes and for standing with us in service to this incredible community. For more than 100 years, the Red Cross has served Long Island. Thanks to your support, our daily impact is countless and immeasurable.

With gratitude,
José Dominguez CEO, American Red Cross on Long Island

James P. Flannery, Chair, Board of Directors, American Red Cross on Long Island
Dear Friends,
It is a privilege to welcome you to the 2025 Long Island Heroes Celebration this morning. As Chairman of the Board of Directors for the American Red Cross on Long Island, I am deeply moved by the stories we share today — stories of courage, compassion and quiet determination that reflect the very heart of our community. Long Island is home to extraordinary individuals. Some are first responders who act decisively in moments of crisis. Others are healthcare professionals, educators, veterans, and advocates who dedicate their lives to service. Still others are young people and families who, through resilience and empathy, are building a more inclusive and supportive future for all.
This year’s honorees from Officers Timothy Deegan and Matthew Walling, to Jennifer Keane, Dr. Tochi IrokuMalize, Mel Cohen, the HERO Project founders Charlie Dubofsky and Sydney Hassenbein, and the team at Luv Michael remind us that heroism is not reserved for the headlines. It lives in everyday acts of kindness, in the choice to step forward, and in the commitment to help others without hesitation.
Their stories also reflect the mission of the American Red Cross. Whether responding to disasters, supporting military families, teaching lifesaving skills or preparing communities, the Red Cross is there thanks to the tireless efforts of our volunteers and the generosity of our partners and donors.
The Red Cross brings hope and help when and where it is needed most. But we cannot do it alone. This breakfast is not only a celebration of our heroes; it is a call to action. We invite you to stand with us, to volunteer, to give and to help ensure that the Red Cross remains a beacon of hope for Long Island families in their greatest moments of need.
Thank you for being part of this vital mission. Together, we honor our heroes and together, we build a stronger, more resilient Long Island.
Warm regards,

Chair,
Board of Directors

Dear Friends:
It is my pleasure to join you in congratulating our esteemed honorees at the American Red Cross Long Island Heroes Celebration. The American Red Cross provides Long Island and beyond with vital services and community support in the highest times of need. I am grateful for their dedicated service and I look forward to supporting them for many years to come.
I would like to congratulate this year’s First Responder Heroes- Officers Timothy Deegan and Matthew Walling. Officers Deegan and Walling heroically responded and administered life saving care to a fellow officer in a terrible off-duty vehicle crash. Their bravery and quick actions saved the injured officer, demonstrating the finest of our law enforcement heroes.
In another example of heroic life-saving action, this year’s Disaster Hero is Jennifer Keane. A trained nurse and athletic director- Jennifer jumped into action when a referee collapsed mid-game. She administered CPR and successfully stabilized him until first responders arrived.
The Global Citizenship Hero award is presented to Dr. Tochi Iroku-Malize, President of the American Academy of Family Physicians and founding chair at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine. She has dedicated her successful career to expanding access for family medicine and advancing care in underserved communities across the globe.
This year’s Military Hero is given with great honor to Mel Cohen, a U.S. Air Force Veteran and retired Suffolk County Police Officer. Mel has committed his life to supporting veterans in honor of his brother Gerald, who sacrificed his life in Vietnam. Mel actively works with Vietnam Veterans of America, Wreaths Across America, Gold Star Families, and veterans in prison, and continues to dedicate his life to helping those who have courageously served our country.
The 2025 Youth Heroes are Charlie Dubofsky and Sydney Hassenbein, founders of the HERO Project. The HERO Project is a peer support group for middle and high students dealing with grief, loss, and personal struggles.
The 2025 Community Impact Hero is Luv Michael- a nonprofit supporting young individuals with autism. Luv Michael has over 50,000 student volunteers and assists over one million people- assisting young adults on the spectrum to live independently and find meaningful work, and to live a life of fulfillment.
