MY RING: KARL WENDLINGER The best results come your way when you expect the unexpected – I learned that from racing in Styria

T

he first F1 race weekend of this season was turbulent, exciting and a fitting return to the racing that we love and have missed. Just a week after the Austrian Grand Prix, we’re holding the first Styrian Grand Prix. Who’d have thought we’d ever see that? My first race here in the Mur Valley was only the second race of my career (having debuted in Hockenheim).

It was 1987 and I was at the wheel of a privately run Formula Ford 1600. But racing in my own backyard was not the career highlight you might expect because I was too young and too stupid to fall in behind the others in practice and take advantage of the slipstream.

And without slipstream, you were lost on the Österreichring.

The old track was scary and quick, bumpy, too, and a lot narrower than it is today. The run-off areas on some turns were just rough fields. Looking back, I’m glad I never had a big crash: I once grazed a crash barrier and bent the track rod, but that was it.

I have particularly vivid memories of racing here in the 1989 German Formula 3 championship. There were more than 30 cars in the starting line-up and an array of talented drivers. I had learnt from my mistake from a couple of years before and this time I made use of the slipstream and qualified in second place.

I was fired up. But on the warm-up lap I noticed I couldn’t get the car into fifth. I had to start from the pitlane. Thankfully, the mechanics were able to fix it quickly. Then there was another problem: it was raining and I’d only ever driven there in dry conditions. We’d done the odd test at the Österreichring but never in wet conditions because – well, why would you? My expectations went from high to zero. It was going to be a weekend to forget.

I prepared to drag myself around the track at the back of the field.

But why was everyone so slow? On the first lap, I passed 14 or 15 of my rivals. And so it went. I gradually worked my way up towards the front. I was fourth when the chequered flag fell... which was too soon for my liking, as I think anything could have happened that day.

I’d even set the fastest lap – and I was a second quicker than Michael Schumacher, who was to become my team-mate at Mercedes in the World Sportscar Championship the following year.

And that became the pattern: I always performed best when my expectations were at their lowest.

Sadly, there was no Austrian Grand Prix in my F1 days so I had to wait until 2002 to win a race on home soil. It was in the FIA GT

Karl Wendlinger is 51 and comes from Kufstein in the Tyrol. From 1991 to 1995 he drove in Formula 1, DTM, FIA GT and other series. He contested his last race in 2016. Wendlinger is a brand ambassador for and instructor at the AMG Driving Academy, which means he spends his life travelling the world, looking for the perfect racing line.

championship and I was at the wheel of the legendary 10-cylinder-engine Dodge Viper.

By then, the Österreichring had morphed into the A1-Ring and my earlier experience was of no use anymore.

Even today, the track looks simple but looks can be deceiving: it’s actually quite difficult to drive. In the A1-Ring days, the asphalt was very soft and it was hard to warm up the tyres, especially in qualifying. And then there are outward turns. The Remus turn, at the top of the Schönberg straight, is the slowest spot on the track.

This is where it’s easiest to lose control of the rear. It’s happened time and again there, even to the best of them.

Or there’s Würth, the second of the two downhill, left-hand turns. You come through a compression and there’s also a slight downward slope. There are at least two ways to take it on and the quicker of the two depends on the type of car you’re in, the tyres and, of course, the weather, because things are totally different if it rains in Styria, as it did on that day in F3, 31 years ago.

elmut Marko pauses in a layby on the Koppen mountain pass that connects the spa town of Bad Aussee with Obertraun on Lake Hallstatt.

He’s standing in front of a fire-engine red Porsche 356 and looking intently up at the mountainside. “The road must have been up there somewhere,” he says in his distinctive Styrian accent. “These days the road doesn’t have much in common with the route it took back then.” Indeed, the route uphill from Obertraun on the Upper Austrian side of the pass is still as wild and unusual as it was 60 years ago, but on the Styrian side, barely a stone remains in place. “Yes. It’s all been levelled,” says Marko, half to himself.

Believe it or not, Marko – known around the paddock as ‘The Doctor’ – hasn’t been here since the early 1970s.

The reason for the return? The Red Bulletin has invited the éminence grise of Red Bull’s Formula 1 programme to take a road trip to his roots – to revisit an extremely wild era that he spent with his best friend of the time, Jochen Rindt.

Rindt was the original Big Bang of the Austrian motorsport universe: an iconic racing driver who died in an accident at 1970 in Monza. He is the only driver in F1 history to have been crowned world champion posthumously. Were it not for him, there would be no Austrian Grand Prix racers, no race circuit in Spielberg and no domestic enthusiasm for Formula 1.

These two pillars of Austrian motorsport had met as teenagers in Graz. Their common interests formed the basis of their friendship.

First and foremost, mopeds, and then girls.

“Whenever someone’s parents went away for a weekend,” Marko, now a spritely 78, recalls, “a party was organised at their house or flat. And Jochen – who was a year older than me – was brilliant for that because he always brought the best girls along.”

A daredevil who flouted the rules

But you could have fun with Jochen in lots of other ways, chiefly because he “was incredibly adventurous and always cheerful”. He was a trailblazer who cared little for the rules society laid down and didn’t pause to think for too long about whether something was permitted or not.

“Other parents,” recalls Marko with a smirk, “didn’t necessarily want to see their children with us.”

Marko thinks Rindt’s fearlessness is bound up with his life story. Born in Germany, he lost his parents in a bombing raid towards the end of the war and was sent to live with his grandparents in Graz. “They weren’t strict like parents,” says Helmut Marko. “Jochen had more freedom than most. And as the heir to a spice mill in Mainz, he was set up very nicely financially.”

The only thing to suffer was their education. Both boys were in the same class in seventh grade and were heading for disastrous reports so they tried to strike a deal with their teachers: give them a good report and they’d never bother them again.

The Last Chance High

This was the deal: A friend had told them about a boarding school in Salzkammergut that was a haven for young men who didn’t take school all that seriously. It was a private school with a reputation for being the Last Chance High. They would finish school without having to make too much of an effort and have a laugh while they were at it.

The school had a venerable list of alumni: the multi-talented artist André Heller, industrialist Thomas Prinzhorn and racing drivers Niki Lauda and Harald Ertl.

This is how Jochen Rindt and Helmut Marko ended up at Bad Aussee. And how did they come across the car that would inflame their passion for motorsport? Marko explains, “We were skiing in Krippenstein.

And, as we never did anything by halves back then, Jochen broke his thighbone. The problem was that the boarding house and school were a half-hour walk apart and that was impossible with his leg in plaster. So

‘JOCHEN’S GRANDFATHER ORGANISED A CHAUFFEURDRIVEN VW BEETLE’ Jochen’s grandfather arranged a chauffeurdriven VW Beetle. The idea was it would take Jochen to school every day. And it did, for two or three days, at least. At which point we said to his granddad, “We don’t need the chauffeur. One of our classmates has a driving licence. We’ll save money that way.” The man who would go on to win Le Mans adds, with a laugh, “And one of our classmates probably did have a driving licence. But the ones who drove the car certainly didn’t.”

While the Doctor’s Red Bull Junior Team charges have honed their skills as children in risk-free karting, teenagers like Rindt and Marko learnt how to tame a car on the wild, open roads around Bad Aussee, such as the

ten-kilometre stretch of the Koppen mountain pass to Obertraun. “We always pushed the car to the limit,” the Doctor recalls. And they always went about things in a playful way, too. Four of them would get into the car. One drove, while the other three formed the “jury”. If one driver made an error or took a turn in too timidly, he was replaced by the next driver.

The Beetle was a challenge by itself: 30bhp, zero road-holding and cable brakes.

“It meant every wheel braked differently,” says Marko. “At some point, one wheel would lock, then another.” In other words, it was the perfect vehicle to develop a feel for the back end of a car. And another little detail: there were no seatbelts and no speed limits on country roads.

For this 2020 trip down memory lane, Helmut Marko chose a Porsche 356. A fitting choice for three reasons. Firstly, the car dates from the early 1960s, the same period when this story transpired. Secondly, in Ferdinand Porsche, it had the same creator and same construction principles as the old Beetle, but is a lot easier on the eye. And thirdly, his art professor at school had one, which is why he always swept the prettiest girls off their feet.

But the whole idea of graduating school without having to work for it didn’t go to plan. The school lost its official recognition shortly before they were due to take their final exams, which now had to be sat elsewhere. The upshot was both Marko and Rindt failed. In Graz, that could only spell trouble. So they got into Rindt’s new car, a Simca, and set off in the opposite direction, to the German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring. “We slept in fields next to the car,” the Doctor recalls. “The hellish noise of the cars zooming past made woke us up.

And then all of a sudden Jochen said, ‘I want to do that too!’ I just looked at him in astonishment because that was such an unimaginably distant prospect for us.”

As we now know, Jochen stuck to that decision. While Helmut Marko did as his father insisted and went to study Law, his friend went to England to mix things up on the international racing scene. That still garners respect from Helmut Marko to this day. “The English we learnt at school was barely enough to order something to eat.

You have to have courage and a vision to do what he did and a lot of self-belief.”

Jochen Rindt soon became famous but it barely changed him, says Marko, although his lifestyle had suddenly become a great deal more glamorous. “He had the money for his own plane and our dream car, an E-type Jaguar. We’d only see film stars in those before. But when he came to Graz, we had the same parties we’d always had.” As quick as lightning, the fearless boy from Graz with the crooked nose had become “motorsport’s first pop star”, as Marko once put it. Because he made his idiosyncrasies into his trademark: a cigarette constantly hanging out of the side of his mouth; his gait

“Everything he did made him stand out from the crowd,” says Marko.

A proposition at a funeral

And then, the end came, right when he was at his biggest triumph. “Our approach to death had been that if it happens, it happens,” says Marko of the accident which killed Jochen Rindt in September 1970 and which he heard about on the radio at a friend’s house. “But we couldn’t take it in at all when it actually happened. Nor could we

accept it. We drank ourselves into a stupor.

I still remember that evening.”

And then an established manager from the world of motrosport spoke to him at the funeral. “He made me a madly good offer for the following season.”

Seriously? At the funeral?

Yes, Marko confirms. “It felt like I was in some bad film.” Then comes an attempt at an excuse. “He wasn’t Austrian. He didn’t have such a strong emotional bond to Jochen. And as we’ve said, deaths were common-place back then.”

A rare picture

There are hardly any photos of Helmut Marko and Jochen Rindt together. One of the few was taken at the Stainz mountain race, near Graz, in 1968. Rindt, already a famous Formula 1 driver, turned up in Styria in a private Brabham Formula 2 car and slashed the course record by half a minute – much to the delight of 20,000 spectators.

Helmut Marko, who had just earned his PhD, drove in Formula Vee and finished 10th, just behind a certain Viennese driver, Andreas Nikolaus Lauda, in a Porsche 911.

Marko has only a hazy memory of the event.

But he does remember the running of the same race in 1970 when Rindt finished second and apologised for not getting the most out of the car because he was thinking of the Formula 1 world championship.

“In actual fact,” says Helmut Marko with a laugh, “the night before was why we were not on top form that day.” Interestingly, the Doctor then smirks and adds, “Now I can even remember the ladies, too.”

‘I THOUGHT A METEOR HAD HIT ME!’ On lap 27 of the 2002 Austrian Grand Prix, Jordan driver Takuma Sato turned into the Remus Curve. Behind him, Sauber’s Nick Heidfeld hit the brakes – and all hell broke loose…

Back on track after pitting under a Safety Car, Takuma Sato was settling into the action and preparing to hustle his underperforming Jordan EJ12 as far up the order as possible. As he climbed the hill towards what was then Turn 2, the Japanese rookie was swamped by the frontrunners in the race.

Sato edged to the left of the racing line as Rubens Barrichello, Ralf and Michael Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya slipped past on the inside line.

Further back, fifth-placed Nick Heidfeld reacted as Minardi’s Alex Yoong suffered a lock-up. Heidfeld dabbed his brakes and his car suddenly snapped out of control and careered sideways towards the Turn 2 apex.

The moment when Nick Heidfeld suddenly loses control of his Sauber and careens backwards across the apex of Turn 2. He T-bones into the Jordan of unsuspecting backmarker Takuma Sato and both cars vanish in a hail of carbon fibre.

“I was going backwards for a very long time,” says Nick. “I knew there were a lot of cars in front of me and I just hoped I could get through them without hitting anyone. I thought it was going to be okay, but then…”

Everything exploded. Heidfeld’s Sauber smashed into the side of Sato’s Jordan. With both cars wreathed in dust and smoke, the Safety Car was re-deployed.

“I thought a meteor had hit me,” recalls Sato. “It was an unbelievably big impact and it was strange because I had no idea who’d crashed into me. It was like something had hit me out of nowhere. I felt a lot of pain and couldn’t move my legs because they were wedged between bits of carbon fibre from my car and bits of the Sauber.”

The impact was so violent that it punched a hole in the side of the Jordan’s cockpit and there were serious concerns for Sato’s wellbeing.

“The main thing I remember is sitting in my car and seeing Takuma’s Jordan in pieces,” says Heidfeld. “He stayed in his car a long, long time and I was very worried for him. It might sound a bit weird now, but waiting to find out if he was injured was one of the worst moments of my career.

“And the accident was my fault,” he admits. “We were using a new brake pad material, which I’d tested at Barcelona before the race.

“I’d chosen them knowing it was more difficult to get up to temperature and more peaky, but once you’d got it in the right working range, the bite and deceleration were both better.

“Everything had cooled down during the Safety Car and the pads didn’t get

back up to temperature at the same time. When I braked for Turn 2, one side decelerated much faster than the other and that’s what turned the car around.”

Given that it was possible to see Sato’s legs through the holes in the side of his car, it was remarkable that the Jordan driver suffered no serious injuries.

“Had the crash happened five years earlier, I think there might have been a different outcome,” admits the Japanese racer. “I’m sure my legs would have been more damaged because the safety of the cars was improving very rapidly.

“I also have to say thanks to Eghbal Hamidy, who designed the EJ12. The

car had the highest nose in F1 and it meant that the lump of magnesium and whatever else that made up Heidfeld’s gearbox went underneath my right knee, rather than into it.

“If the car had possessed an ordinary, low nose, can you imagine how disastrous it would have been?”

Sato was examined at the scene of the crash by Professor Sid Watkins and the FIA’s medical team before being taken to the Red Bull Ring’s Medical Centre and then to hospital in Graz for further observation. He was released the following day and even raced in Monaco two weeks later.

As for Heidfeld, he walked away with a sore left leg. And he never used those brake pads again.

What kind of house do you live in?

It’s not a big flat, it’s 80 square metres but it’s nicely done and quite modern and I have a great view from the terrace. I really like it.

What’s the most extravagant thing you’ve ever bought?

Red leather shoes.

What’s the coolest hotel you’ve ever stayed in?

Cala di Volpe in Sardinia and Byblos in St Tropez.

Your dream holiday destination?

I’ve nev0er been to an exotic island, like the Hawaiian Islands or the Maldives.

Can you play a musical instrument?

If not, is there one you’d like to learn?

I play classical guitar and electric guitar.

You’re ordering take-out, what do you go for?

Pizza or pasta, but normally I prefer to cook for myself.

Volkswagen UP. Childhood hero?

Michael Schumacher.

What are your hobbies away from the track?

Boxing, karting, skiing in winter.

If you could do any job in the world, apart from racing driver, what would it be?

Boxer.

If you had a time-travelling De Lorean, where would you want it to take you? ’70s, ’80s or ’90s… not too long ago.

When did you first realise you wanted to be a racing driver?

The first time I tried karting.

Best book you read during the shutdown?

Mike Tyson’s autobiography.

What did you have for dinner last night?

Yesterday I trained a lot, and was too tired to cook, so I ordered Greek Food.

Where do you keep your trophies?

I only have my trophy from Hockenheim 2019 here in Monaco because I send all my trophies to my father in Moscow. He has a lot more space and has got a special room where he keeps every trophy from my career since karting.

Name one thing that’s changed since you became a dad?

It’s a special feeling, I still have to get used to it, but it’s certainly amazing to be a dad!

Early bird or night owl?

I think I’m somewhere in the middle.

In 1984, there was no doubt who was in the championship driving seat: Niki Lauda and Alain Prost were dividing the wins up between them in the McLaren-Por sche.

The only one who could get close was Nelson Piquet in his muscular Brab hamBMW – especially on quick circuits where engine power was an advantage.

And it was the defending world champion Brazilian who secured pole at the Österreichring and led from the start.

Prost then spun off and the home fans went wild. Lauda was up to second.

And it got better when to the sound of chee ring, Lauda grabbed the lead with 11 laps to go.

Niki, though, was harbouring a secr et: he’d lost third gear and would be easy pickings if Piquet wanted to retake the lead.

However, the Brazilian was war y of the wily Austrian, reasoning that Laud a was managing the engine and would floo r it the second he made a move. So Nelson sat back and settled for second.

“Why didn’t you overtake me agai n?”

Lauda asked him on the podium, but his words were drowned out by the jubi lant cheers of 100,000 fans.
