TECH TIP.

For truck drivers, a power tarp system is one of the safest and most reliable ways to cover a semi-trailer or rigid truck. Designed to take the work out of manually winding the tarp of the vehicle, they drastically reduce the risk of injury.

USING THE BCDC1212T TO SET UP A POWER TARP BATTERY CHARGING SYSTEM THAT WON’T LET YOU DOWN. We spoke to REDARC Product Manager, Charles Nesbitt, to learn more about the ideal solution for keeping power tarp auxiliary batteries charged throughout the day.

WHAT PROBLEM ARE TRUCK DRIVERS FACING WHEN USING POWER TARP SYSTEMS? To keep the batteries charged and power tarp working, a battery charger is critical.

Previously, the REDARC BCDC1206 was the only charging option.

But with only a 6 amp output it is a bit small and can barely keep up enough charge to ensure the tarp can be opened and closed multiple times a day.

Many truck drivers do short trips between deliveries, with more stops, so tarps need to be opened and closed more frequently.

There is not given enough time to recharge the battery between uses.

WHAT SOLUTION HAS REDARC CREATED TO FIX THIS ISSUE? REDARC’s BCDC1212T DC battery charger is the perfect solution, providing plenty of charge to ensure the power tarp can be used all day.

trailer auxiliary batteries up to a 100% state of charge on the move.

With enough charge to keep a power tarp functioning all day, the BCDC1212T works by taking power from the vehicle’s alternator to charge the auxiliary battery, whilst driving, so the battery is getting charged between sites.

HOW DOES THE BCDC1212T LIGHTDUTY DC BATTERY CHARGER WORK? Capable of charging lead acid, calcium content, Gel, AGM and Lithium (LiFePO4) batteries, it is perfect for any power tarp system.

At 24 volts operating voltage, the BCDC 1212T will boost current up to 20 amp maximum.

With a unique charging profile for each battery type, it allows power tarp users to save time by powering the battery throughout the day and removing dependence on AC mains charging.

By installing the BCDC1212T, drivers can be confident their trailer battery is being charged correctly, preserving battery health and avoiding running out of power during the day... even when power tarps are used frequently.

WORLDSKILLS AUSTRALIA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS AND SKILLS SHOW. REDARC was excited to be sponsoring the Automotive Electrical competition in association with the Motor Trades Association WA, NAPA, Snapon, MyCar, and Durst at the WorldSkills Competition in August.

International Training & Development Manager, Mark Bruce, represented REDARC at the event.

The Automotive Electrical task saw competitors installing an array of REDARC components on a prepared test board.

Motor Trades Association Trainer and Assessor, Brad Gamel, commented that the competition was fierce, with a young auto electrician form Tasmania completing the 2.5 hour task in just over an hour.

Held at the Convention Exhibition Centre in Perth, Western Australia, more than 50 different trades and skills were represented in a mini-Olympics-like competition.

Successful competitors from 34 regions around Australia will compete in the national and subsequent international finals in front of over 200,000 people.

450 people competed for gold in Perth and the opportunity to represent Australia at the International Competition in Shanghai, China in 2022.

HUMMINGBIRD UPDATE.

Well-established global mining company, GEMCO reached out to Hummingbird Electronics to solve a noise issue they were facing.

HUMMINGBIRD ELECTRONICS DELIVERS A SILENT HORN SOLUTION TO GLOBAL MINING COMPANY, GEMCO. With many excavators, front end loaders and rear dump trucks on a mine site in close proximity to a residential area, they were creating noise pollution with audible horns and reversing signals.

Because of this, GEMCO decided to explore and invest in technologies to reduce the impact of mine induced noise in properties surrounding the mining lease. Hummingbird offered a solution to the diggers’ horns – the Hummingbird Silent Horn.

This system is available for diggers and trucks. Vehicles pair with each other, within a set distance, and allow the digger to contact the truck with the press of a button.

The truck driver receives a visual and audio alert without external noise.

However, the company still faced the problem of the trucks’ reversing signal and wanted to be able to turn these off whenever a truck was paired with a digger.

This would allow the reversing signal to function as normal in other situations.

The Hummingbird silent horn for trucks consists of a display unit and antenna, while the version for differs also includes an Input/Output (IO) module that allows for expandable functionality.

By adding IO modules to the truck units and providing the option for users to configure the units to suit each application, Hummingbird Electronics was able to deliver a complete solution for the company.

Configuration is a simple procedure, accessed via menu options on the

built‑in display.

When installed in a truck, the Silent Horn system can shut off the audible reversing signal when the vehicle is paired with a digger.

The reversing signal functions as normal when not paired, maintaining its safety function. This innovation has now become a standard feature in the Silent Horn.

Hummingbird has now delivered 43 Silent Horn systems to GEMOCO and positive results have been recorded and acknowledge by neighbouring residents.

DEFENCE UPDATE.

REDARC is pleased to be shortlisted for the Defence Teaming Centre’s (DTC) Growing and Emerging Award.

REDARC DEFENCE SYSTEMS SHORTLISTED FOR DTC GROWING AND EMERGING AWARD. The Growing and Emerging Award recognises a small-medium enterprise who is bringing a new product or service to the defence market or increasing its market share in the defence sector.

Since its formation in 2019, REDARC Defence Systems has moved to further grow in both the Australian and international defence markets. In this time, REDARC has signed contracts with several major defence businesses including the Australian Army, Kongsberg Australia, Thales Australia and MARL International.

These contracts have allowed REDARC Defence Systems to expand to employ twelve dedicated staff plus a further eight from across the REDARC group, and have a projected $15 million worth of contracted work for the next three years.

Speaking on being shortlisted, General Manager of Defence Sales Mike Hartas said, “We’re really pleased and proud of the nomination. REDARC has been working closely with our key customers to grow as Australian Medium Level Defence enterprise in order to support Australian Defence Programs. As an Australian enterprise, we work closely with our local Australian supply chain to grow not only REDARC, but our selected partners.”

The DTC Growing and Emerging Award winner will be announced on October 20th at the Annual Defence Industry Dinner & Awards Ceremony.

IN THE COMMUNITY.

REDARC has taken a big step towards achieving zero waste to landfill by recently signing a contract with VEOLIA. This contract meant that in the last three months, more than 90% of all waste at REDARC avoided going to landfill.

REDARC MOVES TOWARD ZERO WASTE TO LANDFILL. Part of this initiative includes becoming a member of the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO).

This partnership is helping to reduce environmental impact by improving packaging sustainability throughout the REDARC supply chain. Key focus points in our supply chain include removing plastic bags, clamshell packaging and single carton per product packaging.

Initiated by the REDARC Environmental Committee, we have also embraced a hierarchy methodology to how we handle waste. This hierarchy focuses on reduction and reusing materials before moving into recycling options and energy recovery, with landfill being an absolute last resort.

To further this landfill reduction methodology, REDARC is encouraging all staff on site to be thoughtful about how they dispose of waste, and to consider whether it can be recycled, reused, or reduced.
