Raise the Good Ones by Tracey Koester, Publisher

You may have heard, “It costs as much to raise a good one as a bad one,” but have you stopped to really think about that statement? Sure, feed efficiency factors in, but on an overall basis, each cow is going to have the same cow-care costs in pasture rent, feed, mineral and vaccinations. Now, let’s figure in your labor, something most ranchers take for granted. You spend the same amount of time calving a poor-quality herd than one with good genetics. Every time you work cattle through the chute, each cow takes approximately the same amount of time, crew, labor and equipment. It’s hard to put a pencil to a lot of this but you get the picture. If you are going to go to the work and expense, make sure she’s a cow that is producing a high-value calf that will top the market. Unfortunately, that fat, slick cow doesn’t always bring in a top-weighing calf at weaning.

REGION A DIRECTOR Keith Hickle | Auburn, Washington keith.a.hickle@gmail.com

My dad calls a good-doing cow with a scrub calf “counterfeit” because she isn’t doing her job.

REGION B DIRECTOR Craig Bieber | Leola, South Dakota craig@bieberredangus.com

Case in point, you can’t always tell which cows are going to do a good job so it’s important to use other tools like AI, synchronization, genetic testing and EPDs to raise the bar on your cow herd. Likewise, if you breed for carcass merit and can validate your genetics, you have another marketing tool to leverage higher prices.

AREA 1 DIRECTOR - WEST George Murdock | Pendleton, Oregon murdockcattle@gmail.com AREA 3 DIRECTOR - ROCKY MOUNTAIN Aaron Kravig | Karval, Colorado akravig@kravigredangus.com AREA 5 DIRECTOR - NORTHERN PLAINS Stephanie Jung | Mina, South Dakota lazyjbarranch@yahoo.com

Incorporating timed AI and synchronization may require slightly more planning, labor and inputs, but being able to speed up genetic progress will get those bigger calf checks into your bank account sooner, too. Enjoy this Genetic Advancement Special Edition with articles geared toward helping you make strides in your genetics. And keep this issue handy when it comes time to select the sires that will elevate your cow herd so you can continue to raise the good ones. //

Genomics Testing Emerging as a Game-Changer for Commercial Producers by Macey Mueller for the Red Angus Genetic Advancement Edition

As domestic cow herd rebuilding efforts ramp up over the next couple of years, genomic testing can be a powerful selection tool to help impact both the generational productivity and sustainability of the herd. With rising input costs, the value of making more precise management decisions has also increased, and while traditional phenotypic and visual appraisals are still important aspects of replacement heifer selection, the use of genomic evaluation allows for more informed decisions, increased confidence and the optimization of genetic merit that can have lasting effects in a herd. Lindsay Upperman, Ph.D., RAAA director of breed improvement, said genomic testing is simply a DNA test that helps to verify the genetic merit and performance of cattle. Hair, blood, tissue or even semen samples can be collected and evaluated. RAAA has partnered with Neogen to use DNA results to provide genomic information for EPDs that allows cattle producers to make strategic decisions and effectively select cattle that fit their operational and environmental goals. “The genomic information we get from testing goes into the International Genetic Solutions genetic evaluation, which helps to better estimate an animal’s EPDs – or their true genetic merit,” she said. Although DNA testing has been used extensively in the seedstock industry for years, it has more recently become a valuable tool for commercial producers as well. In fact, 16

RAAA has developed the Red Navigator genetic panel specifically for Red Angus-influenced commercial females. Tested females receive genetic information in the form of an individual percentile rank as compared to the herd and an individual percentile rank compared to all other Red Angus genotyped animals.

Lindsay Upperman, Ph.D.

“One of RAAA’s centralized goals is to focus on the commercial industry,” Upperman said. “The culmination of information delivered through Red Navigator allows commercial producers to make genetic advances in their herds and also market commercial heifers based on their potential.” Upperman said that while females have often been overlooked when it comes to genotype testing, it can be a cost-effective practice to identify quality replacement candidates. “It’s hard to know what a female really has to offer without that DNA data,” she said. “Just because she’s one of your better looking heifers doesn’t technically mean that genetically, she’s the best one in your herd. “If you test them, you can effectively select for the females with those ideal maternal traits and high Stayability scores, which is ultimately going to help your bottom line because you’re out less in replacement costs when those females stay in the herd longer and raise up a calf each year.”

Genomics Testing Emerging as a Game-Changer for Commercial Producers As producers begin to rebuild a cow herd that recently reached a 52-year low, Upperman said now is the best time to use genomics testing, as it can help set the stage for success over the next 10 to 20 years. “If you have a replacement female you’re incorporating in your herd today, she’s potentially going to have calves for the next six to 10 years, and then some of those calves may even be retained in the herd,” she said. “When the decisions you make today can influence the next 20 years of your mating and selection decisions, it’s extremely important to start off with that better genetic base.” As a former seedstock producer turned commercial cattleman, Kevin Miller understands the value of genomics data and continues to implement the technology on his ranch near Briggsdale, Colorado. He and his wife, Sallie, run Croissant Red Angus and recently moved away from selling bulls to develop a commercial operation that includes a Red Angus-based cow herd, a feedyard and a direct-to-consumer beef business. As they have phased into a commercial herd, Miller said all of their purchased bulls are DNA tested, which provides greater accuracy in progeny predictions. “It’s purely from a reliability standpoint versus a value input,” he said. “Bulls are costing more and more for commercial and seedstock producers alike, so you need to have the reliability of the EPDs that you selected them on.” The Millers also use the Red Navigator genetic panel on all their females. Their registered cows had all been DNA tested prior to making the transition to a commercial operation, and Miller wanted to continue to build on the parental link data.

In addition to identifying replacement candidates, Miller uses genomics testing to make individual EPD corrections and mating decisions in larger groups of cows.

18

RED ANGUS Genetic Advancement | Spring Spring2024 2024

After years of selling Red Angus bulls, Kevin Miller and his family recently transitioned their Croissant Red Angus operation to a commercial herd but continue to find value in genomics testing. Pictured are Jean and Larry Croissant, Alisa, Sallie and Kevin Miller. “Red Navigator is a valuable tool because it gives you a full set of EPDs, even if those commercial females are not registered in the Red Angus breed, and it’s about $22 per head,” he said. “We use the results to create a large subset of females that we can drill into and really find those maternal traits that are going to help us meet our goals.” Croissant Red Angus is located in shortgrass prairie, and like so many of their fellow producers, the Millers have endured extremely dry conditions over the past couple of years. As a result, they have culled their herd to fit their available resources and are only running at a 70% stocking rate. Under better conditions, Miller said one of the biggest advantages of DNA testing is that his cows have stayed in the herd longer.

Genomics Testing Emerging as a Game-Changer for Commercial Producers “One thing I saw in the seedstock business and as we’ve transitioned to a commercial operation is our Stayability numbers have become more true,” he said. “Those binary traits are very hard to predict because they’re lowly heritable, so it has been refreshing to see our results correlate with the DNA data we used in the selection process.” Moving forward, Miller said genomics testing will continue to impact both the cost side of his operation – the heifers he retains in his herd – and the revenue side – the steers and culled heifers he feeds and eventually sells. “I think in the marketing sector, we’re going to see more and more about ‘the paperwork pays,’ which just means if I want to garner more dollars in my pocket, I’m going to have to prove how my cattle can perform,” he said. “We’ve seen this happen with vaccination protocols and other program cattle, and now as grids become more competitive, we have DNA tests to show how cattle rank for growth, carcass or other specific traits.”

“Just because she’s one of your better looking heifers doesn’t technically mean that genetically, she’s the best one in your herd.” to see more commodity type heifers take the hit first versus those that have that backing.” As chair of the RAAA technical committee, Miller encourages producers to utilize genomics testing in their herds to benefit their operations and help further advance the breed. However, he warns perception is not always reality.

Miller said he sees a similar scenario unfolding as herd rebuilding takes shape.

“When you’re first starting out using a tool like genomics testing, be prepared,” he said. “If you’ve never tracked where you’re at, you may have a grandiose idea of what you think you have, but that may prove to be wrong when the results arrive.

“As we start marketing heifer candidates, the more things you can do to upgrade value, the longer those females are going to hold that value,” he said. “We all know there’s going to be an early price point that gets pretty high, and then it’s going to start coming down. As it does, we’re going

“Don’t get discouraged on that first go around. If you get frustrated right away, you’re just going to throw the product away and never do it again, and then you’ll force yourself into that commodity role real fast. Use those results to make progress and take little bites out of it as you get there.” //

All of the cows at Croissant Red Angus have been DNA tested and selected for their strong maternal traits.

RAAA to Replace Red Navigator with Neogen’s Igenity Beef Test By Rachael Oliver, Assistant Director, Commercial Marketing As technology evolves, the Red Angus Association of America is continually on the lookout for programs and products that will benefit our commercial and seedstock customers. During its January 2024 meeting, the RAAA board of directors saw the need for an update concerning the Red Navigator DNA test. After much discussion, the board voted to discontinue Red Navigator. In its place, RAAA will begin offering the Neogen Igenity Beef test to commercial Red Angus producers, effective July 1, 2024.

accuracy information for producers to utilize in genetically benchmarking their own cattle. RAAA will still be processing the Igenity Beef samples the same way our Red Navigator tests were handled, and producers will still be able to receive one on one consultations from RAAA staff about their replacement heifer results. Pricing is yet to be determined and will be published prior to product launch.

For more information, or if there are any questions, feel free to reach out to CEO Tom Brink at the RAAA office at tombrink@redangus.org, or any member of the commercial marketing team. We are working together to provide a superior commercial DNA product that will help you stock your herd with top-notch Red Angus replacement females, while also marketing valuable feeder steers. //

The primary use of Igenity Beef is to assist producers with their replacement heifer selection decisions, as well as in quantifying their genetics for other economically important traits. Switching to Igenity Beef allows producers to obtain 17 maternal, performance and carcass traits that have been developed using a large multi-breed cattle population, creating higher

By Design ... Our fall-calving program is by design. Our cattle are bred, born and raised to excel in conditions opposite of most production seasons. They are tough, resilient and prolific. Sure, calving in August might be easier than March, however maternal and actual performance in the winter are antagonistic to nature and we identify and eliminate those unworthy of staying in our herd. Conformation, muscle, foot structure, disposition, performance and maternal strengths are backed by breed-leading EPDs for growth and carcass. At the end of the day, our customers need cows that do their job, payweight at weaning and carcass traits that build a reputation with their feeders.

We are raising beef ... by design.

Management is Key to Increasing Pregnancy Successes by Teres Lambert for the Red Angus Genetic Advancement Edition

“Although fertilization rates are reportedly high in beef cattle, significant developmental failure occurs within the first seven days of gestation. Approximately 28.4% of embryos will not develop past day 7 of gestation with most embryonic losses occurring before day 4. By the conclusion of the first month of gestation, 47.9% of cows submitted to a single insemination at day 0 will not be pregnant.” This information gleaned from “Pregnancy Loss in Beef Cattle: A Meta-Analysis,” in the January 2020 issue of Animal Reproductive Science begs the question, “What steps can be taken to boost embryo viability?” After all, calves born earlier in the season and fewer open females at pregnancy checking equate to increased profitability. Jordan Thomas, Ph.D., assistant professor of animal sciences at the University of Missouri, said the key to increasing embryonic success is good management. “Minimizing pregnancy loss within a herd can be accomplished with good management,” Thomas explained. “This can include limiting the stress placed on pregnant animals and taking preventative measures against diseases and other causes of pregnancy loss.” Time Transportation for Embryonic Success To give embryos opportunity to survive, research shows that females that have been AIed and need to be moved to another location should be transported before day 5 following insemination. Hauling pregnant females from day 5 of prenatal development through the first four weeks of the embryonic stage puts recently impregnated females in a precarious position. A Colorado State University study extended the number of days to 42, noting that hauling cattle five to 42 days following insemination resulted in a 10% reduction in AI conception rates when compared to animals not transported.

Thomas agreed with the findings of the CSU study. “If transportation is not carried out within that first four-day period post insemination, then you should wait to haul cattle until they reach at least day 42 of pregnancy,” Thomas stated. “This Jordan Thomas, Ph.D. avoids the period of early development and attachment of the embryo, as well as the establishment of the placenta. “The attachment of the embryo and establishment of the placenta occurs between days 22 and 42 of pregnancy. Once that pregnancy is well established, the developing embryo is less susceptible to environmental changes.” (See Table 1 regarding what’s happening during the pre-embryonic stage and early embryonic stage). Pregnancy losses related to transportation and handling, however, can still occur after day 42. To lessen embryonic losses, producers are advised to use low-stress stockmanship and recognize that weather, distance to be traveled and overcrowding can negatively impact the embryos females are carrying. Thomas added that, if possible, producers should avoid transportation of bred females entirely or at least delay transportation until mid-gestation. Management is Key to Increasing Pregnancy Successes Meeting Nutritional Needs of Dam Abrupt changes in diet can also affect embryonic development and the uterine environment. “Any substantial shift in diet can cause changes in microbial composition of the rumen,” Thomas stated. “Too quick of an adjustment can cause issues that affect pregnancy rates.” For example, heifers developed in a dry lot, estrus synchronized, AIed and then turned out to pasture may encounter challenges due to diet changes and activity levels following AI. A South Dakota State University study found that heifers went into a negative energy balance when transitioned from a dry lot to a pasture. Thomas explained that this was associated with a dramatic increase in activity as the heifers walked the fences of the pasture and re-initiated grazing behavior. Despite grazing high-quality forage, the heifers were losing body weight and, as a result, had reduced pregnancy rates to AI when compared to heifers managed on pasture throughout the process. From conception to calving, a dam’s nutrition is a critical control point. Within 30 days of conception, a calf has a detectable heartbeat, and its main organs and extremities are developing. By nine weeks, the developing calf is three inches long and is referred to as a “fetus.” Mineral specialists point out that dams need high nutritional standards at this time, so the fetus develops strong organs and does not become mineral deficient. Ninety days after conception, the digestive system of the fetus starts to develop, and fetal growth occurs quite quickly. As such, the fetus needs nutrition to continue growing as it should. Research conducted in Brazil that focused on skeletal muscle formation called the embryonic and fetal stages “crucial for the formation of muscle fibers, adipose and connective tissues,” adding that formation “depends on maternal supplies for an adequate growth and development.”

32

RED ANGUS Genetic Advancement | Spring 2024

Heifers managed on pasture throughout the breeding process tend to breed up better than heifers that were developed in a dry lot, AIed and then turned out on pasture, regardless of the quality of forage. In their research article “Fetal Programming in Ruminant Animals: Understanding the Skeletal Muscle Development to Improve Meat Quality,” researchers stated, “Maternal nutrition during gestation may alter muscle fiber composition and the lean:fat ratio, leading to the production of a desirable body composition … The combination of maternal nutrition and postnatal supplementation in a so-called “marbling window” can result in the elevated number of intramuscular fat cells, leading to more marbled carcasses … Disturbs involving maternal feed restriction or overfeeding directly affect the offspring’s skeletal muscle composition, influencing the final meat quality.” Nutritionists advise that the minimum nutrient density of the total diet on a dry-matter basis – forage plus supplement if any – be around 7% crude protein and 50% total digestible nutrients, or TDN, for the middle third of gestation and 8% crude protein and 54% TDN during the last trimester. When these protein and energy targets are met, the dam should be in a body condition score of 5 or 6.

Management is Key to Increasing Pregnancy Successes The calf will benefit from its dam having this body condition score. In addition to calves born to cows in good body condition having the ability to better regulate their body heat, calves can also stand and nurse more quickly, getting needed colostrum into their bodies more quickly. Research studies have demonstrated that colostrum intake has a positive long-term impact on the health of the calf. Avoid Heat Stress Ensuring an embryo thrives requires favorable uterine conditions. One way to keep the embryo’s environment favorable is to avoid dam heat stress, particularly within the first couple of weeks after breeding. Cattle can easily become heat stressed – when the temperature humidity index, or THI, exceeds 72 – because they cannot sweat effectively and because the rumen acts as an added heat source through fermentation. Heat stress is hard on an embryo for two reasons: 1) Heat stress decreases blood flow to the embryo’s home – the uterus; and 2) When a dam’s body temperature increases due to heat stress, the increase could result in an increase in the temperature within the uterus. Both conditions put an embryo at risk.

34

RED ANGUS Genetic Advancement |

Spring 2024

Sound management practices such as ensuring adequate access to shade and water and using low-stress handling techniques can lessen heat stress. “Handling of cattle elevates their body temperature,” Thomas stated. “Cattle should not be processed in extreme heat and should be processed only in the cool early morning hours. If avoidable, don’t work cattle in the evening during hot weather, as cows have not yet recovered and dissipated the day’s heat load even though atmospheric temperatures may have decreased.” To ensure embryos survive, Thomas also suggested producers consider avoiding typically hot months when determining their designated breeding season. “Although the potential for pregnancy losses can be worrisome, proactive management systems can help to minimize the occurrence of these costly losses,” Thomas summarized. “Most losses occur early in pregnancy and are unlikely to be observed as anything other than reductions in pregnancy rate or a calving distribution that is not as front-loaded as desired. “Work toward continual improvement of the overall management system by reducing the opportunities for stress, suboptimal nutrition or other challenges that can result in pregnancy loss.” //

Estrus Syncing Methods: Which One is Right for You? by Jessica Wesson for the Red Angus Genetic Advancement Edition Artificial insemination is common within the beef industry in modern-day America, but it has come a long way.

Two of the most popular methods for estrus syncing are CIDRs and the melengestrol acetate feed additive, more commonly known as MGA.

Nearly 250 years ago, an Italian physiologist successfully demonstrated AI in dogs. In 1900, AI research began with livestock in Russia, and a Russian scientist named Ivanov developed the technique for horses. By 1930, the practice spread to cattle and sheep and came to the United States in 1938.

Basics of the CIDR Method The CIDR acronym stands for controlled internal drug release, and it’s a progesterone vaginal implant.

Almost 90 years later, AI is widely practiced in beef cattle. However, there are many methods and protocols to choose from. Clem Neely, DVM, is a veterinarian with SEK Genetics in Galesburg, Kansas, and specializes in reproductive work. He said there is much to consider when planning for AI, including the method producers pick for estrus synchronization in heifers and cows.

40

RED ANGUS Genetic Advancement |

“It’s been in the market since 2010, and it allows you to have a higher percentage of heifers and cows synchronized,” Neely said. “It has 18 to 20 days’ worth of therapeutic progesterone levels.” The first step with CIDR is deciding on a protocol. The two most common methods are the 7-day CO-Sync+CIDR and the 7&7 Sync. 7-day CO-Sync+CIDR This method requires producers to put cows or heifers through the chute to insert the CIDR and give the initial

Spring 2024

GnRH shot. Seven days later, producers will remove the CIDR and give the animal a shot of prostaglandin, or PG. Around 60-66 Clem Neely, DVM hours after the PG shot, producers will AI and give cows another shot of GnRH. Alternatively, heifers will get their GnRH shot and be artificially inseminated approximately 54 hours after the PG shot. 7&7 Sync In this method, producers will give an initial shot of PG on the day they insert the CIDR. On day 7, they will give a shot of GnRH and leave the CIDR in for seven more days. On day 14, the CIDR will come out, and the animal will get a second PG shot. Approximately 66 hours after the second PG shot, the producer will AI and give

Estrus Syncing Methods: Which One is Right for You? a second GnRH shot to the cows. They will give the second GnRH shot and AI heifers around 54 hours after the second PG shot. Benefits of CIDRs Neely said giving the cows enough time after calving before syncing them again is important. “Sometimes cows aren’t allowed enough time after calving to start cycling,” Neely said. “We like to give them at least 60, preferably 70 days, postpartum. If you have a three-month window and you’re trying to get those cows to start calving at the same time next year, you can run into this problem with your later calving cows.” CIDRs can help shorten the breeding and calving windows to help make this possible. “The CIDR protocols really allow you to get those females into a tighter synchrony, no matter what protocol you’re using,” Neely explained. “Some protocols can work better than others to get heats in a tighter timeframe.” He says it also assists with cows that have issues with estrus. “It can help an anestrus cow that’s not started cycling again after her calf was born,” Neely said. “The chances of getting an anestrus cow to conceive with AI are really low, but CIDRs can help her return to cycling sooner.” It can also benefit heifers that have not started cycling yet. “If you’re dealing with a heifer that is on the verge of puberty and hasn’t started cycling yet, it can help to begin her cycling,” Neely said. Disadvantages of CIDRs While CIDRs have many upsides, it is important to take all aspects of this method into consideration when choosing how to sync females. Neely explained that this method can be labor intensive. 42

RED ANGUS Genetic Advancement |

Synchronization protocols help tighten calving windows for a more consistent calf crop. “At a minimum, you’re going to run that cow or heifer through the chute three times,” Neely said. “Some protocols may have you running them through four times. It also makes it difficult if you’re working with cows that have calves on their side. Even if you have a great working facility, you must get everyone caught and sorted to work them.” Another disadvantage is cost. “There’s more expense with the CIDR method,” Neely said. “CIDRs are only approved for one-time use, and it can get expensive to continuously buy CIDRs depending on how many cows you have.” MGA Feed Additive Method The other popular method for estrus syncing is the MGA feed additive, which is only approved for use in heifers. This method calls for feeding MGA to heifers for 14 days. On day 14, producers should remove the MGA additive. Nineteen days after the removal, producers will give a PG shot. For 72-84 hours, producers should use an estrus detection aid to detect heat and AI, along with a shot of GnRH. “It’s a synthetic progestin that works like progesterone, and this method is only approved for heifers,” Neely said. Spring 2024

“This is the same feed additive they will use in feed yards to keep feeder heifers from cycling.” Benefits of MGA Depending on the size, MGA is more cost friendly than CIDRs for some operations. “It’s much cheaper than using CIDR implants,” Neely said. “It’s only 5 cents per day on average to feed each heifer.” It also requires less labor since heifers do not have to be run through the chute as much. “It saves you two trips through the chute versus a similar protocol that uses CIDRs,” Neely said. “You’re feeding it to them, so you don’t have to put in a CIDR. You can save a lot of time and labor by using this method.” Disadvantages of the MGA Additive Method While the feed additive is effective, there are specific requirements to ensure it works. “All heifers have to get the feed consistently for 14 days, and if anybody goes off feed, it can cancel out the feed additive,” Neely said. “If some of the

Estrus Syncing Methods: Which One is Right for You? heifers don’t come up to feed, they won’t get their daily amount. It puts them at risk for cycling too early, and they won’t be synced with the other heifers.” Having the right feed delivery method is key to successfully implementing the MGA method. “The only way this method works is forcing the heifers to eat the MGA feed additive,” Neely said. “If these heifers are out on grass, they may not necessarily eat the feed you deliver to them.” He says the best way to make heifers eat the MGA feed is by taking away all other options. Using a wagon can also be more convenient. “They need to be in a dry lot or in a feeding pen situation,” Neely said. “This works especially well if you’re using a feed wagon, and mixing your MGA additive into the feed is easier.”

“They need to be in a body condition that allows them to cycle correctly. You don’t want them to be too thin or too fat. If they aren’t in the right body condition, AI won’t go how you want it to.” Ultimately, it all depends on the rancher and the management of the feeding method.

“They need to be in a body condition that allows them to cycle correctly,” Neely said.

“It all comes down to your feeding management, which means ensuring everyone gets the allotted amount,” Neely said.

“You don’t want them to be too thin or too fat. If they aren’t in the right body condition, AI won’t go how you want it to.”

Other Factors to Consider When Choosing an Estrus Syncing Method While labor and cost are obvious factors to consider when choosing between these methods and others, producers should also consider the animal’s condition.

Keeping animals healthy is also important when producers AI. “Herd health is important as well,” Neely said. “Work with your veterinarian to develop vaccination, treatment and deworming protocols.” //

PARAMOUNT Now is a paramount time to verify your genetics in the Feeder Calf Certification Program. The Red Angus Live Animal Specification, recognized by the USDA, acknowledges Red Angus are genetically Angus and meet requirements to be included in many Angus branded-beef programs.

Genetics, not hide color, qualify an animal as Angus. Visit RedAngus.org
