By Rob Hess, Area 7 Director – Northeast The amount of information presented to each of us every day is astounding! In 20 years, we’ve gone from having to find a landline to call someone, to having the entire world in our pocket – just a text, tweet or post away. None of us would be the first person to get caught up reading social media comments and realize, an hour later, our time would have been better spent focusing on more important matters. Staying focused can be a difficult task, which makes time management and stewardship more important than ever!

Modern technology has the ability to greatly increase efficiency and needs to be embraced, but that technology is a double-edged sword. Being inundated with too much information creates an environment that, too often, can make us question ourselves, our decisions, plans and convictions, especially when we allow ourselves to be exposed to too many thoughts and opinions, regardless of the credibility or motives.

Blocking out noise to achieve goals can be difficult but it is crucial when charged with leading a family, ranch or organization. It is a personal choice to allow distractions to impede progress or not. Having clearly defined objectives that you believe in, that will allow you or your organization to reach its full potential, is an important first step in charting a course free of impediments and making the best use of your time. Having confidence and defined convictions make it easier to execute plans without questioning ourselves and becoming distracted. As most of us will acknowledge, there’s numerous ways to successfully achieve goals, but having confidence in yourself and your product is an essential and a common theme.

Red Angus breeders have never had a shortage of confidence. Since 1954, the people behind this breed have been willing to challenge conventional thinking and embrace being different because we unequivocally know the founding principles of the breed are true and just. Confidence in our product and principles has helped our breed maintain focus and experience tremendous growth despite swimming upstream against the norm. Independent thinking and confidence allow us to make the best use of our time because we rarely question whether our principles are right or wrong.

In 2019, a diverse and well qualified strategic planning committee began working on a new Red Angus Strategic Plan. After roughly two years of planning & review the 2021-2026 Strategic Plan was adopted. Personally, my trust and faith in this plan, in the cattle, the members and our staff make it easy for me to stay focused and want to follow and execute the plan objectives. The values & critical objectives of the Strategic Plan provide a road map that will continue the unprecedented growth of the Red Angus breed as long as we stay on course and ensure that every decision we make is toward fulfilling the critical objectives of the plan. If you haven’t read the current Strategic Plan, take time to do this.

Very few of us are fortunate enough to have a committee create a five-year strategic plan for our operations. However, that shouldn’t stop us from striving to establish goals and objectives. Have you defined goals and objectives for your operation? If not, be a good steward and make time to do this! Having a defined plan will help each of us be better stewards of our operations and help us better manage our time. Without a guide it can be way too easy to figuratively get drug into the weeds! //

Make It Less About Hide Color; More About Objective Value

By Tom Brink, RAAA Chief Executive Officer In an ideal world, the U.S. feeder cattle market would establish prices based exclusively on objective animal value attributes. Real genetic merit would matter more. Hide color would matter less. Percent black, or any other color, would not be a topic of conversation when trading feeder calves, because the focus would be on what’s under the hide. Ranchers would increase their efforts in creating truly valuable cattle without the distraction of being concerned about their color.

Whether the beef industry can reach this ideal situation remains to be seen. However, newly released survey results suggest the cattle feeding sector is desirous of change. Between October 2021 and February 2022, RAAA conducted a survey on the feeder cattle market, evaluating attitudes and opinions about how it has performed in the past, how it functions currently and what needs to change to create a better future.

There were 252 total respondents to the survey’s eight questions, 214 of which, by design, are cattle feeders (85%). Of the remaining 38 respondents, six are buyers, 11 are auction managers and 21 are considered industry experts, given the positions they hold in the beef business itself, in cattle-related agribusiness or in education/extension. Below is an abbreviated summary of the survey results.

The cattlemen and women that I work with day to day are some of the hardest working people on the planet. Ranching isn’t a “get rich quick” scheme, rather, the desire to run cattle comes from a passion for the lifestyle, the land and the cattle themselves. One of the things that makes ranching such a unique challenge is the fact that running a successful cattle operation requires expertise in not one area, but many: genetics, breeding protocols, animal health, animal nutrition, marketing, mechanics, land management, water management – the list goes on and on.

During a recent ranch visit I was reminded of the diverse skill set required of a rancher in just a single day. When I first arrived, we assisted a heifer with calving. We then drove through the replacement heifers and talked about the opportunity to DNA test those females using the Red Navigator test and enrolling those females in the Red Choice program. Next, we drove through the cow-calf pairs and ended up visiting about solar pumps the ranch had recently installed and the benefit they had provided. The calves we were looking through were healthy and all tagged with the FCCP dangle tag.

To conclude my visit, we went in the house and visited about recent bull sales.

I very much enjoy the opportunity to do ranch visits with commercial Red Angus producers and have observed through many of these visits that the most successful operators are not only experts in all things cattle, but also exceptional stewards of the land. As my late grandpa said, “You take care of the land, and it will take care of you.”

Our goal as the marketing team is to provide assistance and expertise in just one of the many arenas that a rancher has to focus on – marketing. When it comes to marketing cattle, convincing the buyer that their calves exceed their peers’ and are worth a premium requires verification. We continue to encourage producers to age, source and genetically verify each calf crop through RAAA’s Feeder Calf Certification Program.

Unfortunately, I’ve seen many Red Angus females sold in the last month that weren’t supposed to be going to town, but the rancher had no choice because of drought conditions. In a market flooded with drought cattle, it is more important than ever to differentiate those females as superior, so the already tough situation doesn’t get worse when cattle sell under the market. After the EID and Brand Rules and Regulations were approved by the board of directors in June 2021, the RAAA IT team has worked diligently to make the necessary changes in REDSPro. After many months of testing and adjusting, the EID and Brand options in REDSPro were released to the membership on March 2, 2022. You can download the updated Rules and Regulations from RedAngus.org, under Herd Management > Rules and Regulations (Section E, pp. 25-28).

Current acceptable forms of permanent identification include: 1. Tattoo (with herd prefix and individual animal ID) 2. Brand (with herd prefix and individual animal ID) a. Freeze and hot-iron both acceptable 3. EID – ONLY if used with a secondary identifier, which includes the following: a. Tattoo b. Brand c. DNA Sample d. Dangle Tag Important elements regarding EIDs and secondary identifiers: • Only 840 EIDs are acceptable (15 digit, non-repeatable number) • Tattoos and brands used as a secondary identifier must have the herd prefix and animal ID present • The dangle tag used as a secondary identifier must have the EID and/ or animal ID present • When selecting DNA as secondary identifier without DNA on file at the time of registration or submission of the EID number, the animal will be at pending status until DNA is uploaded to REDSPro. If DNA was submitted to RAAA without a registration number, one must make sure the registration number is provided to the DNA department for the DNA sample and registration number to be tied together for the animal to be removed from pending.

Data in a Genetic Evaluation Part 2: Phenotypes

By Ryan Boldt, Director of Breed Improvement This article is the second of a three-part series discussing different data types that are included in the genetic evaluation and the importance of each.

Within the genetic evaluation, phenotypes are king and are truly the driving force behind the EPD calculation process. Last issue, the importance of pedigree information was discussed.

While that is the main mechanism that is used to link data together, it is important to have different data points for the EPD calculation process.

Phenotype data collection starts in beef cattle on the day the animal is born. Originally data collection focused on weighing animals. The RAAA was the first breed association to require phenotypic data collection, so, subsequently, those measurements were available to make selection decisions.

While this approach is somewhat effective for generating genetic improvement, progress using just the phenotypic measurements is slow because each phenotype is influenced by both the genetics and the environment that an animal experiences.

So, while there is a genetic factor associated with it depending on the trait’s heritability, the phenotype has a varying level of predictability of the genetic value that the animal has for the trait of interest.

The next progression was to move to within-herd comparisons using ratios.

While this added more information, it still did not bypass the challenge of selection decisions based on a metric that had environmental influence.

This was the main reason for using EPDs because it allowed for the separation of the phenotypes into genetic effects and environmental effects.

In genetic evaluation, all phenotype information is compared within the contemporary group. A contemporary group is a group of animals from the same herd, age and sex that were managed similarly. Within the genetic evaluation, each contemporary group is defined differently depending on the trait. For example, there is a different definition of how measurements for birth are compared versus traits collected at weaning or yearling.

While these groups may be defined differently, their function in the genetic evaluation is the same. The contemporary group is used to help define environmental influences over resulting phenotypes in that group.

Take, for example, two groups of animals. One group has a very favorable environment with an average weaning weight of 600 pounds. The second group did not experience as favorable of an environment and has an average weaning weight of 500 pounds.These contemporary or environmental effects can then be accounted for in the EPD calculation process.

If we looked at the resulting EPD values in both groups, we may see that they end up being similar and the animals that were above each of the averages in the group receive more favorable EPDs compared to their parental average, and those below average for these phenotypes could see the EPD values move in a less favorable direction.

Therefore, it is important to collect as many phenotypes on as many animals in a specific contemporary group as possible. Doing so gives a more accurate picture of the environment influencing the observations in the group and a more accurate picture of each animal’s ranking within the group.

These phenotypes and comparisons really are the basis of the genetic evaluation process. Recording and reporting this information is key to improving the accuracy of EPD information within a herd. Therefore, it becomes important to plan and make data collection a priority in seedstock animals. Table 1 gives an outline of different phenotypes that can be collected on animals at different time points throughout the animal’s life.

Looking at the table, it becomes apparent that there are numerous phenotypes that can be recorded on an animal. While all of the phenotypes are not currently used in genetic evaluation, collecting this information can be used within a herd to help with management decisions or could be used for potential future genetic evaluations.

Figure 1 shows the number of records that are available in the IGS genetic evaluation. The largest number of records available in the IGS database is the pedigree information. In terms of phenotypic measurements, the most reported are weight measurements,

Data in a Genetic Evaluation followed by calving ease, docility, ultrasound measurements, genotypes and harvest records.

Each of these different phenotypes is important and used in one or, in a few cases, multiple genetic evaluations, that are performed. In all genetic evaluations, multiple phenotypic measurements are used to contribute to the EPD calculation process through what is known as multiple trait models. Take for example, the carcass weight EPD. In this EPD calculation, the following phenotypic data is used; weaning weight, yearling weight, ultrasound rib eye area, carcass rib eye area and the carcass weight phenotypes, which all contribute to this EPD calculation. This information is incorporated by using genetic correlations among traits. These genetic correlations signify the strength or the genetic differences that are common amongst the different traits. Therefore, all of these different data points

can be linked together Figure 1 and be used to calculate EPD values that contain more information than may be available on the individual phenotypes for traits.

However, it is still vitally important to collect as many of the different phenotypes as possible because these correlated traits do not share perfect genetic relationships with one another. Therefore, multiple data points that can be provided on all these phenotypes leads to the most accurate prediction of genetic merit for each trait.

Collection and submission of phenotypic data are one of the most vital portions of a genetic evaluation. This data is the basis of the EPD calculation process. Therefore, it is important to

collect and submit as much data as possible for each animal. By doing this, the process of the genetic evaluation will not only improve the overall accuracy of the evaluation within each herd, but across the population in general. In the next part of this threepart series, how genomic information is included in the genetic evaluation will be covered. //

Backing Beef in the Big City

The modern-day grocery store contains 10,000 more foods than it did in 1980, many touting confusing health claims and marketing ploys. Combine that with a growing market of plant-based products and others containing added protein, and the resulting “label mania” can leave consumers overwhelmed when it comes to making purchase decisions.

In her work as a New York City registered dietitian and beef industry advocate, Nicole Rodriguez helps clarify commonly conflated nutritional theories as she addresses beef’s role in a well-rounded diet.

“I have a lot of conversations about defining a ‘plant-based diet’ and how beef can actually be very complementary,” she said. “If we look at USDA’s MyPlate model, we know that three-quarters of it is foods are derived directly from plants and then that other quarter can be an animal protein like beef.”

Research indicates animal proteins can be a vehicle for driving conscious consumption of fruits and vegetables. Rodriguez said simply adding vegetables to foods like burgers and sandwiches, makes them the number one and number three drivers of produce consumption, respectively.

“Instead of eschewing things like burgers and sandwiches, we should really be applauding them as solutions to this commonly known issue of people not eating enough fruits and vegetables,” she said. “I actively try to steer the conversation about plant-based diets away from specific products and more towards foods in classic combinations like a burger, a steak salad or Bolognese pasta sauce.”

New York City-based registered dietitian Nicole Rodriguez regularly features healthy beef recipes and advocates for the beef industry on her blog at enjoyfoodenjoylife.com. beef production and to share information about lean cuts and healthy preparation methods, empowering consumers to shop assuredly at the meat counter and cook confidently in their kitchens.

In addition to working with clients directly, Rodriguez uses social media to help a wider audience of consumers make the connection between farm and fork. “There are numerous foods out there that contain protein or have added protein, but oftentimes you end up consuming much more carbohydrate to get the same 30 grams of protein you’d get from just 3 ounces of beef,” she said. “Not only is beef super delicious, nourishing and satiating, but is also comes in a relatively small caloric package, making it a nutrient-dense option.”

“I earned my nutrition degree in New York City where it was all about ‘big, bad agriculture,’ anti-GMO and we should all be eating vegan, and that never sat right with me,” she said.

“When I became a dietitian, I penned a blog post about shopping shame-free at the grocery store and encouraging consumers to shop for beef based off what they like not necessarily what the label promised because we know that all beef is nutritious, wholesome and tasty.

“I highlight beef as being both an indulgence and an everyday food. If someone is opting for a leaner choice, I usually suggest looking for words like ‘top,’ ‘round’ and ‘loin,’ but I also regularly feature ground beef in my recipes because it’s accessible and it can be rinsed to reduce fat content.”

Rodriguez’s approach to a well-balanced diet and appreciation for beef caught the eye of the New York Beef Council,

She has since partnered with NYBC and the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association on several advocacy initiatives, including a podcast called “Beef Banter” where she connects consumers with producers and other industry specialists.

Red Angus Key to Scholarship Winners’ Success

To advance its mission of equipping and preparing its young members to be leaders, innovators, stewards and advocates of the Red Angus breed and the beef business, the Red Angus Association of America Junior Activities committee annually awards scholarships to young men and women involved in agriculture. These scholarships are awarded to JRA members that are active in the association, as well as in their communities and the beef industry, and are planning to attend either two-year colleges or fouryear universities in the coming year.

Recipients completed an extensive application and interview process, and have proven their communications skills, professionalism and potential for leadership.

The RAAA junior activities committee is pleased to name each of the following five JRA members as a recipient of the Red Angus Association of America’s $1,000 college scholarship.

Mitchell VanderWal is the son of Jeff and Beth VanderWal of Brentford, South Dakota. Mitchell has loved agriculture his whole life. Ranging from raising cattle to learning about plants, he has always been eager to learn more. His education at Northwestern High School of Mellette, South Dakota, taught him to always look up to the next level of progress. This mindset has aided him in building his cattle herd. The marketing knowledge that he learned and acquired during his time at South Dakota State University has taught him how to manage his assets and explore his career aspirations.

The JRA has taught him life lessons that he will cherish for a lifetime. His communication and herdsmanship skills have benefited tremendously 30

With all these skills combined, he will grow his cattle herd and jumpstart his career.

Natalie Evans is the daughter of Sean and Amy Evans of Jacksonville, Illinois. She and her family run a commercial and registered cattle operation called Coal Creek Cattle Co. Currently, she is a senior at Routt Catholic High School where she is a part of sideline cheerleading, varsity track team, student council, NEHS, National Honor Society, service club and ambassador club. Outside of school, she is involved in 4-H where she has held the positions of president, vice president and secretary of her club. Being involved in the Red Angus breed and the beef industry has encouraged her to pursue a degree in pre-veterinary medicine with the intention of going on to veterinary school. She also has the strong ambition to continue her family’s operation alongside her two siblings.

Jamie Geyer, from Lisbon, North Dakota, is the daughter of Wylie and Sherry Geyer. Jamie will graduate from Lisbon High School in May 2022.

She has excelled in school by always being on the honor roll. She has been involved in many outstanding organizations during high school. She has also been the local 4-H club treasurer for the last four years and served one year as the treasurer and two years as chapter president in her FFA chapter.

She is the sixth generation in her family to be involved in the agriculture industry and after graduating from college plans to go home to the family farm and continue to raise Red Angus cattle.

Michael and Sarah Smith. A resident of Shiner, Texas, she will graduate this spring. Throughout school she has been involved in cross country and track. One of her career goals is to write for a nationally renowned agricultural organization. Having been involved with Red Angus for most of her life, writing for a Red Angus-based magazine or other form of media would be a dream come true.

Calley Stubbs is a fifth-generation rancher in Wallace, Kansas. She is the daughter of Becky and Darrell Vandike and Adam and Jill Stubbs. She is currently a senior at Wallace County High School where she is active in volleyball, basketball, scholar’s bowl, forensics, choir, student council and National Honor Society. Calley was first introduced to the Red Angus breed in 2011 when NAJRAE was held in her home state of Kansas. Calley plans on attending Butler Community College where she will study animal science and be a part of the livestock judging team. She plans to become a ruminant nutritionist where she will create and adjust rations for cattle.

The committee is also pleased to announce Dalia Weber as the recipient of the $500 Dee Sonstegard Memorial Scholarship.

Dalia Weber is the daughter of Todd and Valerie Weber. Born and raised in Rock City, Illinois, she attends Dakota Jr. Sr. High school and is involved in many activities including varsity basketball, football manager and is president of the Dakota FFA Chapter. Red Angus has played a huge role in her life and will continue to as she plans to run for a JRA board position and build her industry connections. //

Choosing to Prioritize Heifer Profitability

By Brandi Buzzard Frobose, Director of Communications and Editor Heifers represent the future of all cattle herds and as such, they are often subject to increased scrutiny and finely detailed management. For good reason too, as the potential for genetic improvement and increased profits lies squarely on their shoulders. There is no shortage of data that highlights the beneficial effects of nutrition and reproductive management on the success of replacement heifers and their longevity in the herd.

The pressure on heifers to carry the operation into a profitable future consequently led to the development and launch of the Red Angus Association of America’s Red Choice program. The program was developed to promote improved heifer development, increase marketing opportunities for Red Angus females and create reliable sources of high-quality replacement heifers for cattle producers.

Red Choice was based upon the Show-Me-Select Replacement Heifer Program after RAAA staff spent several years observing the positive impact the program had on the overall quality of the Missouri state cow herd. The program embraces proven reproductive and genetic management practices which, in turn, lead to high-quality, long-lasting females that are ready to hit the ground running in commercial herds.

Victor Miller, of Halfway, Missouri, was a long-time enrollee of the Show-MeSelect Replacement Heifer Program and knowing its success, he was encouraged to push forward with Red Choice as an early-adopter.

Dana Mathes, a producer from Unionville, Missouri, who has been involved in Red Choice since 2020 says the biggest benefit thus far has been the consistency in calves from his Red Choice heifers.

Miller, who has been involved with the Red Choice program as a pilot herd since 2020, is thus far happy with his involvement in the program. He signed on because he wanted to help the industry learn more about quality livestock.

“We don’t have to sell our calves in cuts – we can sell a potload at a time, which will bring $3 to $5 more per hundred more than a group of 10-15 and buyers like that. We aim to give them what they want.

“I’m all for helping the industry have better beef,” he said.

Miller is a proponent of Red Choice because it disseminates information about quality heifers and makes them more available to the industry. He is also a big supporter of the popular Feeder Calf Certification Program and has been enrolling his cattle for seven years. He attests that the benefits far outweigh the minimal cost of enrollment.

“I find a lot of value in the Red Choice program for myself and I want other people to know the value of these management principles and having a good relationship with their vet. I also am very happy with the FCCP as it’s a marketing program that has helped me quite a bit.”

“We’ve also been tagging our Red Angus calves with the FCCP yellow tag for three years now and that’s just another valuable step in profitability.

A consistent cut of calves that are verified is appealing to our buyers,” said Mathes.

An intangible side effect to the program is the strengthened relationship between producers and their veterinarians. Multiple visits are built into the program’s guidelines for prebreeding and pregnancy exams, which can lead to many producers recognizing the economic incentive for upgrading and improving their working facilities.

“Producers need to believe it will make the process better – there should be a demand for better facilities because it pays to do so. The Missouri program has done that and those producers are

routinely getting a couple hundred dollars more per head for heifers in the program than comparable heifers who aren’t enrolled,” said Dr. Jordan Thomas, assistant professor and state cow-calf specialist in the division of animal sciences at the University of Missouri.

Nolan Woodruff, RAAA commercial marketing specialist, attests that profitability is at the forefront of nearly all producers’ minds.

“We all know that money plays a huge factor in all cow herds and if we can make a female more productive, resulting in more calves on the ground, we can be more profitable as ranchers,” said RAAA commercial marketing specialist Nolan Woodruff.

Mathes agrees and encourages other producers to enroll in Red Choice, especially in an industry with such tight margins.

“You’re either in it for a living or a hobby,” Mathes said. “The difference between operations who are early adopters and those who are resistant to change is profitability. This business is too tight not to take advantage of marketing programs that are complementary to your breed of cattle,” he added.

Becoming BQA Certified Can Change Your Bottom Line

By Kelsey Pagel, for the Red Angus Magazine The Beef Quality Assurance program has been around since 1987 when it was developed for, and by, producers to set a standard for cattle care techniques. It’s a nationally managed, state-implemented program.

Dr. Julia Herman, beef cattle specialist veterinarian with the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association shared, “Initially, the Beef Checkoff-funded BQA program focused on teaching proper injection sites which improved how we treat cattle and also improved meat quality.”

“Over the past thirty years, the BQA program has evolved into a total quality management system that evaluates all aspects of the cattle operation, from nutrition and genetics to stockmanship and herd health, and provides principles based on the latest scientific research,” said Herman. “The BQA program demonstrates the commitment to animal care and welfare that our producers show every day, which improves confidence in the industry by consumers.”

The program has evolved into teaching science-based best management practices and is frequently touted as, “The best industry resource for how to improve management techniques to increase profitability and improve the quality of our product,” according to Kim Brackett, chair of the BQA Advisory Group and Idaho cattle rancher.

There are several different programs within BQA depending on the operation. There are cow/calf, stocker/backgrounder or feedyard modules. Most recently, a new Beef Quality Assurance Transportation module was rolled out to beef haulers, which is relevant to both professional transporters and ranchers hauling cattle with stock trailers. The program is also in the process of developing a new module targeted directly at the calf raiser, Calf Care & Quality Assurance. This is a coalition between the National Dairy Farmers Assuring Responsible Management program, the Dairy Calf & Heifer Association and Veal Quality Assurance.

There are also advanced education modules in the BQA program, such as biosecurity, that take a deeper look at the BQA national manual for those producers seeking further and more in-depth education.

The importance of recordkeeping cannot be underscored enough, according to Herman.

“BQA develops important assessment and recordkeeping tools that all cattle producers can benefit from. The daily biosecurity plan for disease prevention emphasizes preventative biosecurity practices that can be implemented,” she said.

“The new BQA Feedyard Assessment is

a comprehensive analysis of feedyard protocols and implementation that can prepare a feedyard for potential audits.

How can producers become certified?

There are two different methods, depending on the producer’s preference.

There are classroom-type settings, which are in person with hands-on components, and normally take a half day. These sessions review all the foundations of the programs.

The other available option is online certification. The modules are available 24/7 and can be completed at the producer’s own pace. The new BQAT program is also available in person or online. Both BQA and BQAT certificates are valid for three years.

The BQA team is constantly updating the information in the modules so when it’s time to renew certification, producers can be confident they’re getting the most relevant and up to date scientific data.

“Ultimately it [getting BQA certified] boils down to the fact that our society is several generations distanced from rural life and at the same time our society has become skeptical about our food supply. Those two facts lead to

consumers not understanding how cattle are raised and over-relying on mass media for information about the cattle industry,” said Brackett.

“Market research has shown that consumers’ biggest concern about beef and the beef industry is animal care.

They want to know that caring for our animals is our first priority each and every day. Introducing consumers to the BQA program has been shown to alleviate their concerns, answer their animal care questions and, ultimately, it will encourage them to choose beef when making purchasing decisions.

“Let’s remember that we need the consumer to buy our product, therefore we need to do our part to assure them that we know how to properly care for our animals. To address consumer concerns, many supply chain partners now require BQA certification, particularly the packing sector. In other words, the buyers of our calves and feeder cattle are under increasing pressure to purchase BQA certified cattle. As a result, having that BQA certification improves the marketability of our cattle at a cow/calf and stocker level,” she added.

Brackett continues to encourage hesitant producers to become certified by relating to their bottom line.

When consumers think about sustainability in the cattle industry, their first thought tends to focus on animal welfare. BQA covers guidelines for cattle producers and veterinarians to ensure cattle health and welfare from several angles, including topics from nutrition and herd health to biosecurity and managing forage and water resources.

Beef Quality Assurance is developed and updated by a national advisory team made up of ranchers, veterinarians, animal scientists, representatives from the marketing and dairy industries, nutritionists and more.

“Each state has their own program that tailors the BQA effort to their production environments. Things like grazing management and nutritional management will vary a great deal across the regions. However, the end goal is to produce cattle with the potential to produce the best beef possible given those restraints,” summarized Gill.

Profit and Stewardship Through Genetics

By Nate Smith, General Manager, Top Dollar Angus, Inc. As we wrap up the 2022 bull sale season, it’s appropriate to look back at some of the bull data provided by RAAA. We will also evaluate a set of Red Angus feeder cattle sold recently in South Dakota and the impacts of genetic stewardship on their results.

Let’s start with Red Angus bull sale results. There were 66 sales in the observation group. The number of bulls sold in individual sales ranged from 12 to 322 head, with the average head count being 68 head and a median of 50 head. There were 14 states represented in the data set from Washington to Tennessee. To say the least, the provided data was an accurate representation of all types of Red Angus seedstock programs. Thanks to Katie Martin and the entire Red Angus marketing team for their work in collecting this useful information.

As shown in the table, sale averages among Top Dollar Angus seedstock partners averaged $696 higher per head. That is a sizable difference to be sure! We next ask, what does this price spread encapsulate? Similar data sets we have analyzed show the same trend. Sales that highlight Top Dollar Angus-qualified bulls (those with objectively superior genetics) generally sell 14% to 18% higher than other bulls. While 14% may or may not seem like a large number, some quick

cowboy math says that on a 50 head bull sale, without verified superior genetics, that’s $34,800 of additional revenue left on the table (50 x $696 = $34,800). This itself is very relevant for the seedstock producer, but let’s also look at what those verified genetics can do for the commercial producer.

Suppose that a commercial rancher buys bulls that allow him to qualify for the Top Dollar Angus program and pays the additional $696 per head for his bulls. How does he recoup the extra cost? A prime example is found in a set of Top Dollar Angus-qualified Red Angus feeder calves that sold in Ft. Pierre, South Dakota, earlier this year which included 87 steers and 80 heifers, together averaging near 650 pounds. The market premium captured when compared to other feeders sold that day (other factors equal) was $46 head for the steers and $21 on the heifers. That’s $34 per head above the market average on both sexes, and an extra $5,682 in the rancher’s pocket for one year’s calf crop.

Assuming it took seven Top Dollar Angus bulls to sire the 167 head in this example, their extra cost, based on the sale price comparison above, would have been $4,872. Thus, in a single year the extra investment in premium genetics was fully recouped with $810 in additional profit realized ($5,682

That’s the power of superior genetics that bring a premium on sale day!

Genetic Stewardship How does this all tie into stewardship? The answer is twofold. First, the economic impact of these advantageous returns allows producers to make improvements to their facilities, health and feed management programs, ensuring the most efficient use of natural resources. Second, there are additional benefits from the genetic side of the equation. Higher-performing animals directly benefit the environment. Animals of this type convert feed energy into beef more efficiently.

Such benefits are seen in a reduction of feed to gain ratios, fewer days on feed and reduced ages at harvest.

These gains allow the industry as whole to lower carbon emissions and support a healthier environment for our children and grandchildren to enjoy. //

2022 Iowa Foundation Heifer Award Winner

By Norma Bolton, for the Iowa Beef Breeds Council Veronica Lents, daughter of Kevin and Mallory Lents, of Creston, Iowa, has recently been announced as the 2022 recipient of the Iowa Foundation Heifer Award.

As an award winner, she received three purebred Red Angus bred heifers which were purchased from Mike and Dianna Nolin’s Red Angus herd located at Monroe, Iowa. The foundation heifers of the breed of the winner’s choice are awarded each year

by Iowa Beef Breeds Council and Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation. At the end of five years, Veronica will be expected to repay $6,000 to help with funding to keep the program going into the future. The program is in year 12 and was developed to help youth establish purebred seedstock herds of their own.

Veronica is a seventh-grade student at Mayflower Heritage Christian School in Creston, and she is involved with

sports in the Creston Public Middle School. She is an active member of her church and the Highland Highlights 4-H Club where she has been involved in a number of community service projects.

In addition, she is a member of the Iowa Red Angus Association and the Red Angus Association of America.

She shares her family’s love of the Red Angus breed and has shown not only at her local county fair, but also at the Iowa State Fair, Iowa Beef Expo, Iowa Red Angus field days and numerous IJBBA jackpot shows. She has participated in contests such as: speech, livestock judging, cattlemen’s quiz and salesmanship and has encouraged others to do the same.

She is planning to learn more about genetics, breeding, feeding, grazing practices, budgets and promotion of the beef industry. She is not only a good showman but is also well versed in current beef industry issues.

Veronica’s recommendations credit her with goals of striving for excellence, being a peer role model and having an outstanding work ethic.
