Crystal Balls and Silver Bullets Last fall, I signed up to write this article on stewardship – so, you may ask, “What do crystal balls and silver bullets have to do with stewardship?”

Please allow me to share with you some of the honors that are bestowed us as members of the Red Angus Association of America. I encourage you to go on the RAAA website, RedAngus.org, and look up “About Red Angus.” You will find the following Mission Statement and the RAAA Vision, followed by the RAAA Core Policies and Historical Perspective: The RAAA Mission is to provide our members and their customers with innovative programs and services, to continue advancing the quality, reliability and value of Red Angus and Red Angusinfluenced seedstock used in the commercial beef industry.

The Red Angus Association of America provides visionary leadership and innovation to enhance the beef industry’s profitability through the competitive advantages of Red Angus and Red Angusinfluenced cattle.

If we only had a crystal ball, consider the possibilities – the obstacles we could overcome, the mistakes we would avoid, the advancements we could make for our breed, our customers, our industry, our ag economy, etc. I believe the RAAA has conquered many of these mountains utilizing good stewardship. Stewardship takes on many forms; financial, ethical, motivational, records and data, breed improvement, education, well-being of others, promotion, re-

sources, just to mention a few. We are all responsible for maintaining balanced stewardship for our association – our members, our staff and the industry – our community and our world (sound a little bit like the 4-H pledge?).

“Doing right” (stewardship) often means taking the road less traveled.

It means added effort, added costs of some kind, seeking insight and guidance (whether that be spiritual or earthly professional). Within this added effort, we must be cognitive of exhausting resources (another form of stewardship) in order to achieve desired goals. Realizing that some of our very best resources are found in great people; their knowledge, their energy, their desire to serve in many forms. During these challenging times, hold fast to faith, family and ethical obligations! Remember to support one another! Be humble enough to be utilized for virtue! Be noble stewards!

So, yes, stewardship joined with faith becomes both the crystal ball (insight for the future) and also the silver bullet (the answer to the challenges) we face here on earth as ag producers and supporters, as consumers and as human beings.

May the Lord provide you a clear crystal ball, a shiny silver bullet – and a big pot of gold at the end of your rainbow! ■

2020 National Red Angus Convention Canceled The RAAA board of directors recently made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 National Red Angus Convention that was scheduled for Sept. 23-25 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

The wide-ranging difficulties of the COVID-19 crisis and its effects on our nation, including Red Angus, are well understood.

Please be aware that this decision was made with thoughtful consideration. After identifying and reviewing more than a dozen risk factors that could negatively affect the convention, the board chose to forgo this year’s meeting of the membership, believing the negatives and risks outweigh the potential benefits of trying to move ahead as planned. A major point of consideration was protecting the health and wellbeing of attendees, particularly our older members who may be more susceptible to serious illness from the virus.

This decision was made in early May, as opposed to waiting 30 or 60 days, due to the extended time window needed for preparation and organization to execute a successful convention of the size and scope that Red Angus conducts each year.

Canceling the 2020 National Red Angus Convention was a difficult choice to make, because it is always a highlight of the Red Angus year. However, given the combined challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and the many secondary impacts it has created throughout our nation, the RAAA board’s decision is in the best interest of the membership, Association staff and the Red Angus breed.

The Red Angus office in Commerce City, Colorado, remains open and fully staffed. Being a cattle association, RAAA is an essential business that is deemed part of the food supply chain. This has allowed our office to continue to operate under mostly normal conditions during the past few months, keeping up with the work of serving Red Angus breeders and commercial bull users. Our June 2020 Board meeting will be held online during the first week of June. Probably everyone has experienced an ample number of virtual meetings and is looking forward to putting these challenging times behind us. A little face time is something we’re all looking forward to!

As a final note, the Red Angus Strategic Planning Committee is in the final stages of crafting its fiveyear plan that will help guide the breed in important areas for the future. This group was able to meet in Denver during the 2020 National Western Stock Show, but all of their work since then has been completed via electronic discussions. More information on the new 2021-2025 Strategic Plan will be forthcoming later this summer and into the fall. ■

Association Commentary Travis Returns to Texas The Red Angus Association of America offers its thanks to Amanda Travis, who recently resigned from her position as assistant manager of the Registration Department. Amanda and her husband Brian, along with their four children, made the decision to move back closer to family in Sanger, Texas.

She came to Red Angus as a temporary employee in August 2016 and quickly proved herself to be a quick study and a hard worker. Within two months, Amanda was offered fulltime work with RAAA, and she remained employed with the organization for 3-1/2 years.

"We greatly appreciate everything Amanda did for us during her time at Red Angus," said Tom Brink, RAAA CEO. "She was a big part of our success in getting the Registration Department caught up and functioning better in 2016, as well as in supporting our relocation to Colorado."

On behalf of the Red Angus staff and board of directors, we wish Amanda and her family all the best as they return to their home state.

Scanga Promoted to Registry Specialist Toni Scanga was promoted to the RAAA Registration Department as a

REDSPro and registry specialist.

Toni began working for Red Angus last July as the receptionist in the national office. In the months since, she has covered the phones – over 600 calls per week – and taken on multiple other responsibilities, including performing regular work in the Registration Department.

“We know Toni hit the ground running and will do an excellent job in her new capacity,” said Tom Brink, RAAA CEO. “Please join me in congratulating Toni.”

Marketing Update

Red Angus Cattle Producers Exemplify Stewardship As I write this article, our country is clawing its way out of the COVID-19 panic.

Crowds of people protest to leave their homes while others protest to continue sheltering in place.

The stock market struggles, boxed beef reaches record highs while feedlots cannot get bids on live cattle.

Grocery stores limit the amount of fresh meat that each person can purchase … and toilet paper became a premium product.

Despite all of this craziness, Red Angus breeders continued to have bull sales, commercial cattlemen made important breeding and grazing decisions, cows calved, calves were marketed, cattle were branded, cattle went to grass, and the work went on. How appropriate that this issue of the ARA focuses on stewardship. If America could move forward with the singularity of purpose towards stewardship as Red Angus cattlemen and women do every day, the struggles we have recently witnessed would be just that – struggles not pandemonium.

One of the highlights of my travels is to visit ranches and observe their commitment to stewardship and sustainability. The ranchers’ efforts are astounding as they manage plant species and diversity, stream management, soil conservation and countless other efforts to keep their ranches efficient and environmentally sound while maintaining profitability. Many of these efforts are not even recognized by the rancher as these

practices have always been done because it is the right thing to do – stewardship – passed down for generations.

An example of ranchers’ commitment to stewardship during an unprecedented time in society is the Feeder Calf Certification Program and Allied Access programs’ continued growth. April was the peak month for the COVID-19 pandemic, during which the FCCP and AA programs enrolled 5% more cattle than in April 2019. This indicates to me that producers recognized market challenges ahead and took a proactive step to separate their cattle from the average market by utilizing the industry’s most mature age, source and genetic verifier. Congratulations to producers taking the step to differentiate their cattle in what is likely to become a very “noisy” marketplace.

In February, I had the honor to attend a reception at the Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Trade Show in San Antonio recognizing ranches that excelled in Environmental Stewardship. The Blew Partnership of Castleton, Kansas, was recognized as the Region VII winner of this prestigious award. The Blew families use Red Angus bulls in their multi-generational commercial cowherd and are a premier example of our industry’s commitment to stewardship.

If you’d like to read more about the Blew Partnership, their story is on page 76 of the September ARA. Congratulations to them for this great honor and their continued conservation and stewardship efforts.

Stewardship is often a word overused and underdone, but not so by Red Angus breeders and the commercial cattlemen and women utilizing Red Angus genetics. Despite the challenges delivered by unpredictable markets, weather and social conditions, cattlemen are resilient and steadfast in their commitment to delivering a sustainable working ranch to the next generation. Now that is stewardship. ■

Red Angus Fiscal Year Ends June 30 Our fiscal year for 2019-2020 ends on June 30. We ask that you review your account and tie up any loose ends before then.

Spring Cow Inactivations Occurred on May 29 Cows listed in the spring calving season that did not have a calf or have a reason code submitted to RAAA for the calving year of spring 2019 have been inactivated from active inventory. To review the cows that have been inactivated, log in to your REDSPro account, select Reports/Downloads, then My Reports. Select the group Inactivated Cow Inventory and pull this group into the report Herd Inventory (as shown below). If any animal on this list needs to be reported on for 2019

and placed back on active inventory for the 2020 calving season, simply report a calf for 2019 or a reason code as to why she did not have a calf. By doing so, this will automatically place her back on active status.

COVID-19 and the National Office Operations in the RAAA office have been unchanging, however, no different than any other business, we take it day by day.

RAAA staff remain healthy and committed to the service of our members! Our biggest struggle has been with mail service delays.

A Fresh Perspective on Precision Beef Production

As I travel the northwestern portion of this great country, I continually hear producers say, “My calves are better than my neighbor Joe Blow’s down the road, and I definitely can’t sell them for less than he got.” riences working with the program through my family’s involvement as a Top Dollar Seedstock Partner for the past four years. It is easy to see why the program has grown rapidly. The Top Dollar Angus team works tirelessly to help all producers – ranch and feeder – “win” with great cattle.

My common response has become, “What makes them better?” At this point in the conversation, producers tend to give the typical responses that we have all heard, thought or uttered.

RAAA to Update Selection Indexes

Economic selection indexes are valuable tools for making bull selection decisions. Currently the RAAA publishes 16 different genetic predictions on each animal.

Looking at this list and trying to identify which combination of EPDs will result in the most profitable outcome for any commercial cattle operation is extremely challenging. This is the reason that indexes are valuable tools. They combine multiple EPDs in a balanced manner, considering their contribution to overall profitability for commercial operations. This allows for a single number to summarize which animals have genetic predictions that will be the most profitable. EPDs will always be available for a more detailed description of the genetics of the animal, but the index provides a simple and quick way to identify animals with highly profitable combinations of traits.

Index Refresher RAAA publishes two selection indexes.

The first index is HerdBuilder which would be classified as an all-purpose index. The reason this index is all-purpose is that it is designed to economi-

cally weigh traits that influence all segments of the beef supply chain. Currently, data points used to calculate the HerdBuilder index include cow performance, calf performance pre-weaning and through the feedlot, as well as traits that influence carcass grading.

EPDs for these traits have varying levels of influence over the resulting index based on their contribution to overall profitability.

The second index the RAAA provides is the terminal index GridMaster. The traits included in the GridMaster index are growth and efficiency in the feedlot and traits that influence carcass grading. The goal of this index is to identify post-weaning differences in financial performance.

Updates These indexes have been used by RAAA since 2014 to help with summarizing the genetic merit of Red Angus seedstock animals. However, there has

been a need to update these indexes to better reflect current market dynamics and improve their value in making more profitable genetic selection decisions.

One aspect that is important to all selection indexes is identifying the prices and costs of different factors to be used in the economic models. For RAAA’s soon-to-be-updated indexes, sources of these prices include CattleFax and USDA. The advantage to using these sources of information is that they allow for the use of national average prices which are known to be reliable.

For the updated indexes, five-year rolling averages will be used. These prices will be updated every year to help respond to more current market demands of seedstock animals. With the updated modeling approach, we will be able to better reflect the current market situations than in the previous selection indexes to make them more accurate.

RAAA to Update Selection Indexes Law of Diminishing Returns For some traits there is a law of diminishing returns. This means that across the spectrum of EPDs there are different economic values associated with different parts of the EPD distribution. As an example, improving calving ease is very important up to a point, but experience and evidence shows that once calving difficulties reach a low level there is less benefit to further increasing calving ease.

Within the selection index construct, we can model these types of diminishing returns using non-linear approaches. The goal behind using this type of modeling approach is that it allows the index to better reflect the results in the real world, where value does not always increase in a straight line. Within the updated indexes there are several EPDs that will have non-linear coefficients associated with the trait.

Discounted Genetic Expressions Another advantage to the modeling strategy used in the updated selection indexes is the use of Discounted Genetic Expressions. A DGE is a way to weight information based on the number of times that trait will be exhibited in a bull’s progeny and descendants. Additionally, this helps to identify the differences in value for a trait that is expressed multiple times later in life or once earlier in life. This approach allows for a more appropriate weighting of traits based on when and how often they are expressed. It also accounts for the role that the Red Angus breed often has in developing maternal crosses as well as straightbred maternal cows, resulting in more expression of maternal traits.

changes coming in modeling of the indexes, it should be expected that some re-ranking of the animals will occur. This re-ranking may be caused by improved modeling approaches or changes in economic values for the traits that have occurred over time.

The goal of this project is to provide a tool that allows commercial cattlemen to make economically balanced decisions for genetic improvement, plus have tools that better describe the results of those decisions in the real world.

Currently, the new RAAA indexes are still in the development stages, but the goal is to have the updated indexes available this calendar year. As we approach the implementation of these indexes, additional educational opportunities will be available through eNews and other media formats. n

Essential Business – But Not ‘Business as Usual’

Early in 2020, when the world was turned upside down and commerce for many industries came to a screeching halt due to COVID-19, agriculture was deemed essential business. Continuing normal day-to-day transactions, however, didn’t necessarily mean business as usual.

The pandemic hit smack dab in the middle of bull sale season – an important time for cattle producers to procure bulls for the upcoming breeding season. Most bull buyers prefer to attend sales in person to visually appraise the animals they spend thousands of dollars to purchase. This year, however, crowd-size restrictions, social distancing and travel bans altered how cattlemen and women selected their next seedstock genetics.

Both buyers and sellers relied heavily on communication technology and remote bidding options.

Experience Paid Off Heather Soukup, DVAuction general manager, based in Norfolk, Nebraska, was working seedHeather Soukup stock sales in Oregon and Washington when COVID-19 hit the West Coast. “The pandemic turned out to be bigger than we originally thought,” she said, “but over the years our role in marketing seedstock has grown and we’ve learned to make adjustments on a weekly, daily and hourly basis to adapt to situations such as blizzards and floods.”

With more than 20 years of experience, DVAuction’s platform was already well established and set up to handle most situations. Its online, live-bidding format enables bull buyers to attend the sale via the internet, place proxy bids or bid in real time on the lots they’ve researched prior to sale day. DVAuction’s mobile app is an additional buying avenue for bidders.

“We know how important our producers’ sales are, so we already had measures in place to make their day as successful as possible,” explained Soukup. “We made sure we had the capacity and capability to handle more online activity, we added servers, and implemented other measures to accommodate on-ranch sales where internet service wasn’t as stable.”

Their website activity nearly doubled with 2.9 million page views between Feb. 15 and March 15 as compared to the same time frame in 2019. “Some sales had over 1,400 buyers online and we’ve hosted up to 40 sales in one day.

We just kept our feet firmly planted on the ground and our head on straight to get through it,” she said.

Soukup praised the DVAuction team.

“We are really proud of our staff. All the field reps continued to attend sales and our customer service staff covered more office hours and Saturdays than normal. Their loyalty and passion for our industry really shined during this time. We encouraged them to be careful when traveling, to social distance and sanitize. They were very resourceful and showed up to get the job done.”

Do Your Homework MacKenzie Oswald and James Howell of JH & MO Farms, a commercial Red Angus cow-calf operation near Urich, Missouri, researched seedstock operations and specific cattle before bidding on DVAuction for the first time this year. “There aren’t a lot of Red Angus operations in our area and attending the sale wasn’t feasible because of the distance and our fulltime jobs,” said

Oswald. “Bidding online is a convenient tool and a nice option. We even bid from our phone and used the ‘Swipe to Bid’ feature.”

Oswald emphasized the importance of doing homework before the sale. “We spent a lot of time looking at online catalogs and videos. We knew what we were looking for and then when we found cattle that met our criteria, we contacted the owners and visited with them. It also gave us a feel for the people, and we were comfortable moving forward to purchase from them.”

Viewing videos of individual stock is important to Oswald. “If we can’t see the video, we aren’t as likely to pursue that animal,” she said. “We learn a fair amount about the animals except maybe what their feet look like. It takes a lot of time to review all the videos, but it was worth it to get the animals we wanted. We have found that questionable purchases in the past were usually last-minute decisions.”

Critical Role Feeder cattle marketing in local auction barns and over online sales was also disrupted due to COVID-19.

“When we started reading and hearing words like ‘pandemic, quarantine and lockdown,’ we knew how we conducted business was going to Joe Lichtie change and that our role in agriculture – and the markets – would be critical,” said Joe Lichtie, vice president of Superior Livestock Auction, headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas.

“Our buyers rely on our reps to help them purchase cattle during Superior sales, but with social distancing and health safety guidelines, we couldn’t bring reps in to sit shoulder-to-shoulder at our phone banks,” he said. “We had to figure out how to sell load lots of cattle without our reps coming in.

Many of our reps are 60-plus years old and we didn’t want them subjected to

travel conditions that could further expose them to the virus.”

With the office building closed down, Superior editing and customer service staff worked at home as much as possible. The phones rang constantly but were transferred to staff members’ personal cell phones. When a call came in, whoever could answer the call, took it.

Superior sales used to be shoulder-toshoulder with reps seated at the phone banks but social distancing guidelines now require 6 feet of space between people.

On sale day, staff came in through the back door, cleaned and wiped down all the phones, and rearranged the phone bank from 24 phones to one per table distanced 6 feet apart. Superior Livestock manned the phones with their office crew, spouses, seedstock sale reps and some local talent that normally work car auctions. “We aren’t really a one-man band because we have the phone business,” said Lichtie, “and we have a really good crew in our office that stepped up to the challenges.”

Superior also offers Click-to-Bid and phone bidding for seedstock production sales. Lichtie estimates they doubled the number of registered buyers per sale. “Some buyers request we call them when a certain lot comes up and other guys just sit on the phone and wait for their bulls.

Essential Business – But Not ‘Business as Usual’ “Our reps are still traveling to production sales to service our customers,” he said. “Most of our reps were raised on a ranch and if there’s a job to be done, they are going to do it. They don’t know any other way.”

Setting up for Success Lichtie believes the reputation of breeders was extremely important this year. “I had seedstock producers call me before their sale and ask, ‘What are we going to do?’ We encouraged buyers to look at the bulls beforehand and watch the videos.

Other sales became online only. In either case, the relationship seedstock producers had established over the years instilled trust and confidence with their buyers and they had successful sales at the end of the day.”

Darrin Eck of Kingman, Kansas, has established a strong relationship with his seedstock suppliers and has purchased Red Angus bulls and heifers online in previous years. “I was planning to fly to the sale this year but when COVID-19 hit, it was a no-brainer to stay home and buy online,” said Eck who has used both DVAuction and Superior’s Click-to-Bid. “I feel very comfortable buying cattle over the internet because these breeders know me, and they have a good guarantee. They wouldn’t be in the business if they didn’t stand behind their cattle.”

Eck, like Oswald, reviews the catalog and videos, then calls the owner to learn more about his favorites. Because of their relationship, his seedstock providers

understand his goals. “If I’ve selected a bull that won’t fit my operation, they will let me know, and then point me towards a bull they think is a better choice. I appreciate their honesty.”

“If someone I know is attending the sale, I will have them take a look at the bulls I’m interested in and report back to me, but the owners have always been very honest with me and have always sent me quality. I’ve never been disappointed in the six or seven years I’ve been buying from them.”

Lichtie echoed that advice. “Have faith in your reputation seedstock supplier because this is their business and they want you to be successful with the animals you purchase.”

Soukup recommended online buyers register and log in early for a sale. “We played our bidding tutorial before the sale to familiarize new online bidders with our process. We also encouraged them to reach out to the rep if they had questions.”

Soukup said, “We know how important bull sale season is and we are all trying to be the best we can be in these unknown and unexpected times. We are here for the industry and we are a good insurance plan in case of a weather-related or unforeseen crisis.”

The onset of the IGS-BOLT evaluation, paired with the submission of phenotypic records, has led to a new era in genetic evaluation for the cattle industry. In an effort to collect necessary female genotype and phenotype information to improve genetic predictions, the Red Angus Association of America Board of Directors has approved the Red Cow Rally.

The Rally research collaboration between RAAA and Neogen is designed to increase phenotypic data collection and submission for mature weights, body condition scores and genotypes on Red Angus females. A limited number of research genotypes (GGP-LD) and rebate funds will be available for the project, so discounts and rebates will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis.

Brock Montgomery of Coats, Kansas, is the son of Kenny & Lori Montgomery. He graduated from Skyline High School and was active in Boy Scouts, holding the highest rank of Eagle Scout. He is a 12-year member of 4-H and was active in football, track, NHS and FFA. He plans to attend Oklahoma State University double majoring in animal science and ag education. Brock and his brother, Ty, built their small herd with ideal conformation traits and balanced EPD profiles in mind. He sells bulls and heifers locally and exhibits in national shows all over the country, and plans to remain tied to Red Angus cattle throughout his life.

Kristen Massingill of Hamilton, Texas, is the daughter of Scott and Faith Massingill. She is an 8-year member of JRA and has competed on state and national levels. Kristen recently completed her second year as Texas Junior Red Angus president. She competed on the Connors College Freshman Livestock Judging Team in Warner, Oklahoma, that was successful as the high-point team at all their competitions. Kristen exhibited at the State Fair of Texas winning Reserve Champion Overall Bred and Owned Bull. She is a dual major of animal science and ag business with a focus on reproduction, and hopes to be an embryologist or veterinarian in the future.

Holly Thomas of Gatesville, Texas, is the daughter of Jody and Robin Thomas. The family runs a commercial cow-calf operation and operates two livestock auctions. Holly has a small Red Angus and Charolais purebred herd and has been showing for 10 years. She graduated from White Horse Christian Academy in Stephenville, Texas, through an online distance program which allows her the flexibility to care for her cattle and travel to shows. She is the Texas Junior Red Angus president and queen and serves as the NAJRAE director-at-large. She will be attending Oklahoma State University majoring in animal science and pursuing a career in veterinary pharmaceutical and feed sales.

Paige Van Dyke is the daughter of Jon and Katrina Van Dyke of Louisville, Illinois. Paige graduated from North Clay High School and was active in FFA, 4-H, Recycling Club, Student Council and National Honor Society, and volunteered in the special needs classroom. She has participated at local, state and national shows since 2013. Raising and showing Red Angus has fueled her passion for agriculture which she plans to incorporate with her experience to become a farm broadcaster and produce her own TV show, The Clay County Ag Report. She plans to attend Lake Land College in Illinois and transfer to Oklahoma State University or Kansas State.

The committee is also pleased to announce the recipient of the $500 Dee Sonstegard Memorial Scholarship.

Marcie Harward from Richfield, North Carolina, is the daughter of Marcus and Patty Harward. She attended Stanly Community College and plans to attend Kansas State University. She has been involved in the cattle industry exhibiting across the country at various shows, and has attended leadership conferences throughout the country. Marcie plans to major in animal science with a concentration in reproductive physiology. With this, she plans to return to her family's business and run the family farm. She will continue to raise Red Angus, selling cattle in the family’s production sale each year. She hopes to utilize her degree to enhance the genetics in her herd as well as in others. ■
