The year 2017 will definitely be one to remember for many reasons, but certainly one reason is because of the many natural disasters that we’ve experienced in America. Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria have left paths of destruction all over the world, especially in Texas, Louisiana, Florida, Alabama and Puerto Rico. Let’s not forget the damage from wildfires in Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Montana, Colorado and California either. Although they haven’t received as much TV coverage or been given storm names, these sweeping paths of devastation have changed the landscapes in these states and the lives of many cattlemen and women forever. Ironically, each of the powerful hurricanes began as what is known in the weather community as an “Invest.” This is a curious term for a tropical storm, but during this early phase of their “lives,” the storms are investigated and monitored to see if disturbing weather will develop into a tropical cyclone. We typically think of the term “invest” when we allocate money or other resources in expectation of a future profit or growth in value.

While we would have certainly preferred to have avoided all of the natural disasters of 2017, a possible silver lining to all of the death and destruction is the opportunity for us to “invest” in our fellow man. I’ve read many stories of Red Angus members who have given tirelessly in efforts to help people rebuild their lives and get back on their feet. The recovery process is slow, and these selfless efforts are not being done in expectation of any future profit or payback, but investing in our fellow man insures the survival of our species and our culture. If you ask the folks who have taken part in relief efforts, they will tell you that they are receiving a phenomenal return on their investment from the learning experience, the satisfaction of helping others, and the peace of mind that comes from doing the right thing.

Board Commentary In the Red Angus breed, we recently honored a couple who made lifelong investments in our breed. Darrell and Mary Lou Schuler truly understood that they got back more than they gave, and the award that bears their names will be given to recognize others who have the same vision. Congratulations to Steve and Shelley Newberry for receiving the inaugural Darrell and Mary Lou Schuler Memorial Award this year. Countless members of the Red Angus family have invested their time and talents in this great breed of cattle to propel Red Angus to the position that we currently occupy. I recently enjoyed the 85th birthday celebration for the first person that I ever met in the Red Angus community. Mr. Bob Angel made an investment in me by sharing wisdom about cattle and sound advice about life. He continues to provide

As we remember the past and this breed’s humble beginnings, we must realize that in order to continue to grow and improve, additional investments of time and talents will be necessary. Everyone can take part in making our breed grow stronger in the future through giving any sized contribution to the RAFI General Fund, Research and Development Fund or the Junior Fund. However, you can also serve on a committee or take on leadership responsibilities in a local Red Angus affiliate or the RAAA.

Red Angus Does the Genetic Heavy Lifting for its Customers

Red Angus breeders have done a lot of hard work on behalf of their customers during the past 10 years. These efforts are paying dividends in the form of highly useful genetics, which offer an amazing combination of calving ease, maternal, growth and carcass traits. Red Angus breeders are creating seedstock that are better equipped than ever to meet the needs of the entire beef supply chain – from ranch to consumer. No industry segment has been left behind.

We can observe what Red Angus breeders are accomplishing by comparing the average EPDs of the top 100 most-used sires for calves born in 2006 with the same for 2016 (most recent year with complete data available). As illustrated in the accompanying table, virtually every EPD trait has moved in a favorable direction. Better cow traits – check. Improved calving ease – check. More growth and carcass value –check. It’s all there. Making simultaneous progress across a host of economically important traits is never easy or fast. A substantial number of mating decisions must be made, followed by consequential keep-cull choices within each year’s heifer crop and also among cows already in the herd. Sire selection is always center stage, as breeders tirelessly search for herd bulls and AI sires that will move their cattle in the desired direction. In the short run, progress is often difficult to observe or measure. However, over longer periods of time (such as a decade), the cumulative result of these genetic improvement efforts are clearly visible. Maternal Traits Lead the Way It all starts with the cow, and as we evaluate the table for trends in key maternal traits, we observe that the breed’s already good female-making traits have

been made even better. Heifer Pregnancy and Stayability have increased (both being important fertility-driven traits), as has Maternal Calving Ease. Milk has increased modestly which, when coupled with improved Weaning Weight EPDs, yields calves with more pay weight as they come off the cow. Interestingly, breeders have also reduced maintenance costs via lower average Maintenance Energy EPDs.

Association Commentary And not to be overlooked, a small increase in average Backfat EPD suggests improvement in fleshing ability. Sum up all of those changes and the result is a profit-making female, genetically engineered for greater output with lower input requirements. Impressive to say the least! Better Calving Ease with More Growth Give Red Angus breeders good tools in the form of reliable EPDs, and they can do amazing things. In fact, they have already done so by shattering old paradigms about birth weights, calving ease and growth. Direct Calving Ease has been significantly improved and birth weights are down, while both pre- and postweaning growth genetics have increased. That’s a very desirable combination of reduced calving problems and more pay weight later

in the animal’s life, including weaning, yearling and all the way through harvest. The 10-year progress in these traits should make any commercial cattle producer smile. Added Carcass Value Rounds out the Package With the “serve all industry segments” mindset that Red Angus breeders have adopted, it is no surprise that carcass traits have also moved in a value-adding direction. Today’s Red Angus genetics are better than a decade ago for pounds, marbling and muscling which is in sync with important industry trends. Over 70 percent of today’s fed cattle sell on some type of carcass-merit pricing system (primarily grids and formulas), and the direction Red Angus is headed translates into added premiums and greater success at harvest.

Multi-Trait Progress to Continue There is good news in all of this, of course, and it is great to see Red Angus breeders do the genetic heavy lifting with their customers’ prosperity in mind. From cow to carcass, Red Angus seedstock providers have a thorough understanding of what matters to each segment in the supply chain. You can also be sure that more multi-trait progress lies ahead for Red Angus, especially given the stronger-than-ever genetic platform the breed stands on today. We can also justifiably say that Red Angus has gained ground phenotypically in addition to the genotypic advancements discussed here. Just flip through a few ARA Magazines from 10 to 15 years ago if you need a little convincing. Genotypically and phenotypically, the Red Angus genetic package has never been better than it is today. n

Why Do We Do the Things We Do?

For the past several nights, I have been listening to the slow drip, drip, dripping of the shower head in our master bedroom. I finally get used to it, shut it out of my mind, and go to sleep, only to wake at 3 a.m. and find out the plumbing gods are not working with me; they’ve failed to send in the night fairies to repair the leak. So, we crank the handle a little harder, close the bathroom door, or just plain ignore it. Why do I avoid fixing it? Well, for one thing, I absolutely hate plumbing. Water leaks are my personal Hades. When the cattle waterers freeze up in the middle of January – as they are prone to do even with the BEST design EVER on the market – I dread fixing them. If I knew the task at hand was going to be an easy fix, I would do it immediately. But I tell myself, “The job is more than that. Shut off the water supply. Get the wrenches. Find out you don’t have the right tools. Watch water run all over the place.” Negativity creeps in. Finally, I put on my big-boy pants and fix the problem. Why do we avoid doing some things? We avoid them due to a lack of knowledge. Larry Mahan, one of my heroes, once said, “Lack of knowledge creates fear.” We don’t always work to learn and become smarter because we just get lazy. We try to use shortcuts, or we become complacent. We’ve always done things a certain way and we’re comfortable with that and therefore ignore the problem. We will listen to the shower drip because it’s easier to ignore it and hope it will go away. It never does. So, we are forced into fixing the problem at hand. Now, if this were an economic problem that caused my income to go down, I would probably jump on it a little bit quicker and get smarter in the process!

Challenges facing cattle operations are often economic. We have to figure out another way to add a son and daughter-in-law, or daughter and son-in-law to the operation. We have to become creative and find new income streams. We need to add value. Sometimes we are bound by tradition and find it difficult to add income or cut expenses the way we’ve always done it. Maybe we don’t have the right tools. How do we add value? How do we do things more efficiently? It’s difficult. Not many people like to do that. It is easier with the status quo. I was surprised recently to learn from a cattle feeder that he had never sold cattle on a grid. In 25 years of feeding cattle, he sold on the cash market. Always. Why? He thought he’d get “taken to the cleaners by the packer.” He’d never done it that way and lack of knowledge, again, creates fear. I heard a rancher at a large cattlemen’s meeting several years ago regarding the advantages of weaning and preconditioning calves for sale. His statement was, “I’ll do it when they pay me for it.” In the most recent Superior analysis, cattle that went through the VAC 45 or VAC 45+ programs brought $9.12 more per hundredweight than calves that were non-weaned and received one viral vaccination at some point in time. Is that enough proof? We’ve just never weaned and preconditioned calves because we weren’t getting paid for it. We’ve always done it that way. The market has changed. Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple, made the statement, “Throughout my years in business, I discovered something. I would always ask why you do things. The answers that I would invariably get are, 'Oh, that's just the way things are done around here.' Nobody knows why they do what they do. Nobody thinks very deeply about things in business.” The definition of insanity is to keep doing the same thing over and over while expecting different results. Thus, I am probably insane, and have been for quite a while if I use that yardstick. The cowherd in the U.S. is expanding and numbers are growing. If domestic and export demand continues to grow, there may not be much to be worried about. But one may want to be prepared to challenge yourself if that is not the case. Now, where’s my wrench? ■

Spring Herd Inventory Evaluation If you have cows that are classified as Spring Herd Inventory, make sure that these females are still on your active inventory. If you no longer have this animal or she has moved to the fall calving season, please either give her a disposal code or reason code for no calf being report. It is important to update this information yearly as this determines the billing for Total Herd Reporting. Spring Herd Inventory will be billed in July. Step 1: Order arrives at RAAA and is assessed for correct information (areas in red MUST be completed). Samples are evaluated for quality and matched to an Animal ID on the order form. Complete orders will proceed to Step 2. Orders missing ANY of the required information are held until correct and complete information is provided by the member. NOTE: Animals that are not yet registered may be submitted for parentage and defect testing only. A valid RAAA registration number is required for the results of any DNA test to be reflected on REDSPro or the animals’ pedigree. Step 2: Order is created through the lab. RAAA Hires New Receptionist Bibiana “BB” Valdes of Thornton, Colorado, has joined the Red Angus team as receptionist. Originally from Florida, BB moved to Colorado in early 2017 and enjoys experiencing new things. She previously worked at Archibald Dentistry as a receptionist and a customer service specialist. "We welcome BB to the RAAA team and are glad to have her on board,” said CEO Tom Brink. “She's a positive personality, learns quickly and will do a great job interacting with members as our receptionist." BB has already taken to the beef industry and said, “I joined this company not knowing anything about cattle but within a few days I have learned so much about how things work. I’m glad to be part of this team and I hope to grow further in the company and see where it takes me.” Outside of the workplace, BB enjoys outdoor activities such as fishing, walking trails and being by the water. In the heart of the South Dakota prairie is a collection of sections long ago homesteaded by forwardthinking pioneers. Today the patchwork prairie is held together by a family whose roots run deep in the native grass-covered pastures and in Red Angus cattle. The Rickenbach family call Fall River County home and have for five generations. It was in 1910 that Joel Rickenbach’s grandfather, L.O. Rickenbach, moved from Pennsylvania to pursue his dream of being a farmer. L.O. wanted to farm out East where he was from but, by the turn of the century, without fertilizer and modern farming practices, the soil wasn’t fertile enough to support crops.

“The land was all farmed out,” his grandson, Joel Rickenbach, explained. The young L.O. had just accomplished a degree from Valparaiso University in Indiana and didn’t let the logistics of where he was to farm squelch his ambitions. L.O. began working with the lumberyards from Hemingford, Nebraska, to Hermosa, South Dakota, and was quickly noted as being excellent with numbers and bookkeeping. He was transferred to Oelrichs, South Dakota, where he discovered that he could homestead. Not long after L.O. got his start in South Dakota agriculture, the Great Depression hit and many of the homesteaders went back to their native states leaving an opportunity for a young man like Rickenbach to grow his spread. He began piecing together adjoining properties for 50 cents to a dollar per acre – a price that his neighbors told him would cause him to go broke quickly. L.O. held tight to the American dream and his family still lives on that land today. “My grandpa L.O. was able to hold things together because he had worked hard to understand numbers and become smart with business decisions,” Joel Rickenbach recollected. Century of Ranching The wheel of time has turned and now Joel Rickenbach is “Grandpa” at the ranch known as Juniper Cattle Co. – home to Joel and his wife Ann, as well as their sons Joel “J.T.” and Joshua, and their wives and children.

Five generations of the Rickenbach family have made the South Dakota prairie their home, embracing the ranching lifestyle with passion.

Although they are a ranch family, the Rickenbachs are a collection of well-accomplished individuals. Each of Joel and Ann’s five children were raised on the ranch but the family has an unspoken rule that each person must go away and “accomplish something big” before returning to the ranching lifestyle. American Dream Inspired Five Generations of South Dakota Ranchers “All of our children are welcome to live on the ranch but they first must go out and do something really noteworthy,” Rickenbach explained. “After that, as long as they are willing to work on the ranch – not off of it – they are welcome to live here.” As a result, the Rickenbachs tout being the parents of engineers, a medical doctor and even officers in the military. In recent years, two of the Rickenbachs’ sons decided to come back to the family ranch, purchasing adjoining land from one of Joel’s cousins. “We really have a neat deal here,” he said. “Now the boys do most of the work but they still let me piddle around quite a bit.” Rickenbach is regularly on the road hauling supplies or running equipment at the ranch.

Rickenbachs select bulls that ensure low maintenance energy requirements in their cowherd for optimal efficiency on the range.

Red Angus Debut Rickenbach was no stranger to the “leaving home and accomplishing something big” rule. He left home while his dad and grandpa still ran the place, and went to seminary. After practicing as a Methodist pastor for several years, he went back to the ranch to begin a full-time career. His granddad had since died, and it was about that time that he and his father decided to experiment with the Red Angus breed. “Until then we had raised Herefords,” Rickenbach said. He chuckled as he explained that switching breeds really wasn’t as scientific of a process for them as it may look to others. “We had traded a set of heifers. We got a set of black heifers from my uncle in exchange for a set of Hereford heifers. Dad looked that over and said, ‘It would be better to go with Red Angus because we can go to that color with less effort than if we go black.’ We didn’t know anything about the Red Angus breed but we thought the color would go better with Herefords.” From that time forward, the Rickenbachs continued to purchase Red Angus bulls and retire their Hereford sires.

Joel said that it’s the calving ease and maternal traits that he loves the most in the Red Angus breed. “The cows just go out and have their calves!”

Investing in the Red Angus “yellow tag” to add return on investment is an easy management decision for Rickenbachs.

March 10. Then anything that doesn’t have a calf by May 1 goes to town.” He said being strict with their calving rule over the years has given them a 70 to 80 percent breed up on the first cycle. They use yearling bulls on heifers and then graduate them to the cows. In addition to calving ease, the Rickenbach family also focuses on the maintenance energy and weaning weight EPDs when selecting their herd bulls. “Although these are antagonistic traits, by selecting for both in our bulls we can assure that the cows are efficient while still capitalizing on pre-weaning growth in the calves,” he explained.

American Dream Inspired Five Generations of South Dakota Ranchers Enrollment Earns Rewards The Rickenbachs were some of the first breeders to enroll in Red Angus’ Feeder Calf Certification Program yellow tags. “Over the years, using the yellow tags has become worth more and more. I have no doubt that they have always been worth the dollar investment to purchase them. We put them in at branding time and, as the years go by, I think they are increasing in value.”

As one of the longest users of the Red Angus FCCP tag, Rickenbachs have witnessed exponential growth in the acceptance of the program over the years.

Rickenbach has seen the popularity of the FCCP tags rise in local markets and on video auction where they sell their calves. He said that the acceptance has grown exponentially since they began using the tags and he expects them to continue to develop as a staple for competitive producers. Joel and Ann hold their church and their family as their top priorities but remain involved also in the Western Junior Livestock Show and the South Dakota Stockgrowers where Joel is a member of the committee for higher education.

Their occupational title of farmer-rancher doesn’t come with a furnished office or an engraved nameplate, but their choice to return to production agriculture at a young age is providing challenges and opportunities to reach their true definition of victory.

As newlyweds, Jessica and Levi jumped at the chance to buy a piece of land close to her family’s farm and ranch in Tescott, Kansas. It was their dream to return home and be a part of the industry that provides food to the world. The Eberts raise 275 head of commercial Red Angus and Angus crossbred cattle with Jessica’s parents and brother. Although their passion is cattle, they diversify their business by planting soybeans, milo and wheat, protecting their profits. “If it were up to me, I’d sell all of the crops and equipment to run cattle,” Jessica said. “My goal is to run 1,000 head, but I know my brother has big dreams of running multiple sections of crops too.” The Eberts’ story is like many other young producers who are interested in returning to the family farm. Some are blessed with resources that pass through generations, but others must find creative ways to begin. Unfortunately, starting a farm and ranch does not come with a small price tag. These producers work with large price tags, especially when investing in capital assets such as land, equipment and livestock. Although debt is not an uncommon term to most, the financial burden can be heavier when carried on the shoulders of younger generations.

Young Agriculturists Pioneer a New Path in Production Agriculture Financial Challenges and Opportunities For the Eberts, the dream of running cattle in the Smoky Hills of Kansas wouldn’t be a reality without the support of family.

“If it weren’t for my parents and brother doing it together with us, none of us could do it,” Jessica said. “We continue to grow, but we need to be able to survive.” Along with the help of their family, the Eberts took advantage of the USDA Farm Service Agency’s Beginning Farmer direct and guaranteed loan programs to make their first purchase of farmland. The government program incentivizes lower interest rates and provides initial down payment assistance on land purchases. “There was no way we could’ve made the initial down payment,” Levi said. “To be where we are today, it truly wouldn’t have been possible on our own.” Serving as a loan specialist in west central Missouri, Brian Bagnell has been helping producers access government funds for over 35 years. Not new to the paperwork, Bagnell assists young farmers and ranchers like the Eberts in making their first investment in production agriculture. “For the 2017 fiscal year, 61.5 percent of loan money went to beginning farmers in the state of Missouri,” Bagnell said. “The national average is currently at 52.6 percent.” With a major emphasis of loan funds going to new and beginning farmers, Bagnell sees the continued need for FSA loan programs into the future. “There are always opportunities for individuals to return to the farm if they have realistic expectations,” Bagnell said. “I saw

people do it in the ’80s when the market was really bad and I think that opportunity is going to remain.” Succession Planning Just as land and resources may be difficult for new and beginning farmers to afford, they can also be challenging to come by. After coming home one summer to help her parents on the ranch, Jaclyn Wilson decided to stay in Lakeside, Nebraska, to take over her father’s commercial Red Angus and red composite operation. In 2013, she started Flying Diamond Genetics, an embryo-recipient-dam business with one of her goals being succession planning. Being the only child returning to take over the family operation, Wilson knew the financial outlook was not in her favor. So, she created a unique source of income that will give her the financial stability to purchase her family’s farm when her parents are no longer able to manage it. “When that succession planning day comes, I can be prepared and the ball is in my court,” she said. Thinking about the future of a business can never come too early. As a lifelong beef producer, member of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Board and agriculture education teacher in La Cygne, Kansas, Tammy Bartholomew, is starting conversations about succession in her high school classroom. “When I see a student who has come from a production background, the first thing I do is get to know them well enough to find out how interested they are in returning,” Bartholomew said.

Young Agriculturists Pioneer a New Path in Production Agriculture If students don’t have the opportunity to return to a family operation, Bartholomew seeks out employment for those students and works to find and create niche opportunities to be involved in production agriculture. In Bartholomew’s opinion, there is still work to be done in linking those interested with those looking for succesTammy Bartholomew sors. “There’s got to be a network created for farms who do not have children returning and connecting them with those individuals who want to come back to production agriculture,” Bartholomew said. “How do we get those young people connected with those who want to retire?” Lifelong Learning Bartholomew makes sure to advise and guide students to take classes that will prepare them to run a successful business such as accounting and agricultural economics.

Beyond the classroom, Bartholomew knows the key to being a successful young producer also comes with challenging oneself to be a lifelong learner. She pushes her students to seek opportunities in the industry and learn from others. Wilson also credits her success to attending educational events, asking questions and building her network through involvement and service to the industry. “I started trying to build a network and out of that I was given great opportunities,” Wilson said.

Giving Back Just as all farmers have an obligation to be good stewards of the land, there is also the responsibility to serve the industry beyond one’s own fence row. Civic involvement and community leadership are vital to a young farmer and rancher’s success. The Eberts, Wilson and Bartholomew have all served in leadership roles through livestock and breed associations, commodity groups and, most importantly, as mentors to future agriculturists who will lead the next generation of young farmers and ranchers. The Eberts are raising their two boys, Ty and Mason, in a rural community and teaching them the value of hard work, which Levi believes will lead them successfully through life. “I love watching my two boys grow up here,” Levi said. “You can go through any pasture and they can tell you pedigrees on cows.”

For Bartholomew, mentorship is challenging younger generations to determine the impact they can have in their communities now and in the future. â€œIf nothing else, beyond our involvement in organizations or donating money, the most important thing we can do is mentor,â€? she said. â€œAnd, by doing so, young people can see the importance of what someone can do even in a small setting. When I have made a light bulb come on, Iâ€™ve done what Iâ€™m supposed to do.â€? Despite the obstacles, individuals are living, working and breathing rural lifestyles. National Western Stock Show

The 2018 National Junior Red Angus Show will be held in conjunction with the National Western Stock Show on Saturday, Jan. 6 in Denver, Colorado. On Friday afternoon prior to show day, the JRA Board of Directors will be putting on an educational workshop for junior exhibitors. Good luck to all exhibitors and the Junior Board looks forward to visiting with you in Denver.

Young Stockman’s Program

The 2018 Young Stockman’s Program will be held in Kansas City, Missouri, March 2 to 4. The program will offer hands-on experiences in cattle handling, nutrition and cattle health, with specialists in each area. Each of these topic areas will have a special emphasis on calf needs at weaning, and participants will have the opportunity to see the LiveWiRED project calves who are at this age (photo below). Miriam Martin, a Colorado State Uni-

versity student working and conducting research under the direction of Temple Grandin, will speak to juniors about animal handling, offering her tips and techniques to reduce stress and increase efficiency. The animal health focus will involve selecting proper equipment, learning tips on administering vaccines, and looking for the key signs of a decrease in health, specifically in calves at weaning. As cattle age, their nutritional needs change. In our nutrition-focused portion of the Young Stockman’s Program, Glen Waters of Purina will explore these changes, looking at various feedstuffs, additives, the purposes they serve and, finally, developing rations. This educational experience will be very hands on and will allow juniors to interact with others from across the country. Registration for this event is open and due by Jan. 1, 2018. New Bull Events Focus on Commercial Cattlemen in the NWSS Yards

Commercial cattlemen will have two new events of interest to attend or participate in at the 2018 National Western Stock Show.

To be held in the historic Stock Yards, the first event will feature exhibitors that will bring bulls in pens of five to 10 head presented and priced like ranchers would find them at a typical ranch sale. Bulls will be presented loose in pens and be priced for private treaty sale to commercial cattlemen attending. These bulls are not allowed to be washed or groomed once they arrive at the National Western Stock Show. Health and brand papers will allow these bulls to transport anywhere in the nation. Several beef breeds will be represented. The second event is sponsored in partnership with OriGEN Genetics. Exhibitors can enter single bulls of any beef breed into this competition. The winning bull owner will be offered a one-year contract with OriGen Genetics where they will collect semen, and offer a one-page ad in their annual bull semen catalog – all at OriGen’s expense. Additionally, the winning bull will earn a $1,000 cash prize. A panel of six judges that are established and reputable commercial cattlemen from cow country will evaluate this set of bulls. These bulls will be exhibited with no grooming and loose in pens as well. Bulls in both events will be on exhibit Tuesday and Wednesday, Jan. 16 and 17, 2018. This is in conjunction with the National Western Commercial Female Show and Sale that will be held in the Yards on Jan. 17. This is an opportunity for the commercial cattlemen and bull producers to come together and trade quality genetics in the historic National Western Stock Yards just the way the Yards show was established over 100 years ago.

In Memory Ellen Mary Fahey

Ellen Mary Fahey, 80, of Buffalo Valley, Tennessee, passed away on Sept. 24, 2017, at the Riverview Regional Medical Center in Carthage, Tennessee. Ellen was born on Dec. 17, 1936, in Chicago, Illinois, to the late Alan Luther and Eleanor (West) Craig. She worked in bookkeeping for her son’s motor works and machine shop. She also served in the Army from 1955 to 1957. Ellen and her husband Richard owned Heritage Farms and were Red Angus Association of America members. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her twin brother, Alan James Craig. She is survived by her husband Richard; two sons, William Fahey and Robert Alan Fahey; a sister, Patricia McKee; a granddaughter, Amanda Fahey Stewart; and great grandchildren Ellie Stewart and twin boys: Wilson and Ryder Stewart. Red Angus Steer Wins Carcass Contest at the 2017 Missouri State Fair Sari Rogers of Princeton, Missouri, won top honors with her Red Angus steer at the Missouri State Fair Carcass Show in Sedalia, Missouri, on August 17, 2017. Sari’s steer, sired by Fritz Justice 8013, was named Grand Champion Red Angus 4-H Steer at the Missouri State Fair, as well as Overall Grand Champion Carcass Steer. She received a check for $1,000 sponsored by the Missouri Red Angus Association for meeting the requirements of the sponsorship set forth by MORAA and the Missouri State Fair. The Reserve Red Angus Steer was exhibited by Sari’s sister, Gracie Rogers. She also won Reserve Champion honors in the Red Angus carcass competition, claiming a $250 reward from MORAA. Both are daughters of Nathan and Carrie Rogers of Rogers Ranch. The Missouri Junior Red Angus Association is making great strides in the state. Plans to exhibit Red Angus cattle are already in the works for upcoming shows in 2018, including county shows and fairs, NAJRAE, Ozark Empire Fair, Missouri State Fair and the American Royal.
