Interaction and Collective Work Create a Dynamic Association It is hard to believe that we are already on the back side of convention in Colorado Springs. First off, I want to take time to thank all of those that attended. The Rocky Mountain Area members hope that you all had a good time.
Next, I would like to express my biggest thanks to the organizing committee for all your great help. Thank you to our dedicated staff that was instrumental in a convention well done. And finally, thank you to all the convention sponsors. THANK YOU TO ALL.
I came into this business in a different route than most and the one thing that I have found most intellectually fulfilling is industry conventions. At state cattlemen’s, NCBA or Red Angus, there are a few things that are shared between all of them. The first is the occasion to reconnect with friends from days past – and for some, this may be the only time you get to see them during the year.
Secondly, you have the opportunity to meet new friends. I find this to be one of the truly special interactions at these

events. As I have grown in age, I have come to know so many more people through these events and if I have not met you yet, I look forward to it.
Third, convention allows for face-toface communications. The discussions that I had in Colorado Springs ranged from changes in the beef industry, DNA tools that help Red Angus, happenings within the Association and, my favorite, how the family is doing. We get wrapped in business too often to take a moment to ask about the important people in everyone’s lives.
As new ideas are shared, the dynamic interaction usually holds the real fruits of the conversation and that is where the game-changing ideas come from. Probably the most important item is that collectively we work together to be part of something greater than the sum of the parts - the Red Angus Association of America.

Finally, committee work is reported and members can share their input. We as a board always welcome contributions from the members. The committee system is in place to look at new ideas, input or research that will better position the Red Angus breed in the beef industry. Commercial Cattlemen’s Symposium The Commercial Cattlemen’s Symposium has come full circle. In 2007, the Rocky Mountain Area group decided to add this event to convention in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Since then, this has become a valuable, informative seminar for both commercial and seedstock producers. This year, a group of commercial producers shared with the seedstock breeders in the room the attributes they value and need, and what it takes to sell them a bull. The Red Angus breed is different from other associations be-
cause we recognize our customers and value their steak – pun intended – at the table.
Annually we recognize the Grid Master Award winners at convention for raising and feeding outstanding carcass-merit cattle. The results of the genetics going into these programs become more outstanding each year, further solidifying Red Angus’ status in the industry. Additionally, I was honored to present the

Commercial Producer of the Year Award during the Symposium. The accomplishments that these award winners achieve with Red Angus genetics are amazing. The National Red Angus Convention affords us the opportunity to stop and reflect on the previous year’s accomplishments, interact with our Red Angus friends, and implement new ideas to achieve even greater goals in the year to come. ■

Colorado Springs Convention a Big Hit for Red Angus
The National Red Angus Convention is consistently packed with information and business activity, as well as fun and entertainment. Old friendships are renewed, hands are shaken and smiles exchanged. It’s about both the people and the cattle. It’s about getting Association business done and learning something new. It’s about bringing the Red Angus membership up to date on Association activity and the progress of the breed. It’s also about camaraderie and uniting around a common purpose. Everyone in attendance – no matter their geography or herd size – wants to see the Red Angus breed succeed in every way possible.
The Red Angus Association of America’s 64th Annual National Convention, held in Colorado Springs, was definitely a big hit. “Reds in the Rockies” boasted attendance of more than 400 when both commercial producers and members are counted. There were 63 first-time attendees in addition to many others that have been part of RAAA member conventions for several years; some have been attending for decades. Below is a brief recap of some of this year’s events:
Commercial Cattlemen’s Symposium and Keynote Address Commercial producers at this year’s symposium were treated to multiple speakers covering a wide variety of interesting topics. From cow size to brisket disease, beef exports and recent market events, the subject matter ranged widely and stimulated a great deal of thought and discussion. A producer panel with three Red Angus commercial cattlemen wrapped up the event, and those in the audience engaged by asking questions and offering a few opinions of their own. Lifelong learning opportunities were in high gear.

On the following day at the membership meeting, Dr. Gary Sides, Zoetis beef cattle nutritionist, took the group on what might be termed as a “myth-busting tour of food and health.” Sides has spent his career researching the meat and food industry, and he treated the audience to a scientifically based perspective that those involved in animal agriculture need to know and remember. One of his main points was that animal protein and fat has been unfairly characterized for years as a source of obesity and other health problems. Sides asserted it’s the carbohydrates – refined carbs and sugar in particular – that are the main source of weight gain in industrialized nations. He offered this partial listing of foods low in carbohydrates and sugar. Note what’s at the top of the list. Examples of foods low in refined carbs and added sugar • Meat, poultry and seafood • Eggs • Unsweetened fruits • Vegetables • Whole grains • Nuts and seeds
Sides recommended multiple books as essential reading on these topics. Two were The Big Fat Surprise by Nina Teicholz and The Case Against Sugar by Gary Taubes.
Committee Presentations and Board of Director Elections At every convention, considerable time is dedicated to presentations by RAAA standing committees and Board of Director elections. Committees get a chance to update the membership on what they’ve accomplished during the past year and what they are working on for the future. This enables members to see exactly where the Association is headed and what its priorities are for the future.

Association Commentary
The board election process includes brief speeches by the candidates, followed by Q & A with members, and concludes through a paper ballot vote. Congratulations to Steve Koester, Connie Mushrush and Newley Hutchison who were all re-elected to serve on the RAAA Board for another three years. Bob Morton was also re-elected as president for another year. Congrats Bob!
Reds in the Rockies Significant planning and cooperation between the Red Angus host affiliate and the National Office is required to make the convention a success. The Rocky Mountain Area 3 members did a great job hosting this year’s convention and represented the Red Angus breed and the state of Colorado very well. We much appreciate their efforts. Even the Colorado Aspen
leaves displayed more RED this year (they can tell us later how they made that happen).

National Office Completes Relocation to Commerce City
After 50 years of calling Denton, Texas, its home, the Red Angus Association of America has completed its relocation to Commerce City, Colorado. The new headquarters of the 63-yearold organization are well situated right outside of Denver, only 10 miles from Denver International Airport. The determination to relocate was carefully considered by the RAAA Board of Directors for some time, which ultimately concluded it was the right choice for the Association’s headquarters. “Our Denton facility was showing its age, and we wanted to be more centrally located relative to our members, customers and the U.S. livestock industry as a whole,” stated Bob Morton, RAAA president.

RAAA CEO Tom Brink said the move positions the Association in a major livestock hub and geographically in the middle of the country. “We have members all over the nation, and being more centrally located will make our overall travel easier and more cost efficient. Staff recruitment will improve, plus there are tangible benefits to being located in close proximity to numerous other cattle and livestock organizations.” All correspondence should be sent to RAAA’s Colorado mailing address: 18335 E. 103rd Ave., Suite 202, Commerce City, CO 80022. Are Your Bulls Yours?
That’s a strange question to begin this month’s Marketing Update – “Are your bulls yours?“ Since you spent hours researching bull sale catalogs, spreadsheets and formulas, went to several sales and spent a considerable amount of money, of course they are yours. But does the Red Angus Association of America know they are yours? Every person or ranch that has a Red Angus animal transferred to them is assigned an account number with the RAAA. Any animal you purchase after that will be placed in an inventory under that account number. This inventory and the animals it contains become important criteria to take advantage of the marketing opportunities offered by RAAA.
Having every bull you purchase transferred into your ranch name and account at RAAA is the first step for taking part in all of the Red Angus marketing programs. The Feeder Calf Certification Program is well documented to add value to your calf crop. This age, source and genetic-verification program all hinges on having Red Angus bulls transferred into your ranch account. Your seedstock provider does the transfer after the sale. If you have purchased bulls in the past six months and haven’t receive their registration papers or aren’t sure if they have been transferred, I would encourage you to contact your

Enrolling in the FCCP is a simple, over-the-phone enrollment, but you must have the proper number of Red Angus bulls in your ranch’s RAAA account to qualify. Red Angus-sired calves wearing the FCCP tag have been documented to bring $3.38 per hundredweight more than Red Angus-sired calves not wearing the FCCP tag. That’s significant value for free herd enrollment and 99-cent dangle tag investment! The FCCP tag qualifies your calves for the special Red Angus sales scheduled around the country and listed in this issue of the ARA. These special sales have become well-known as a great place to add value to your calves. Buyers interested in backgrounding or feeding high-quality Red Angus-sired calves use these sales to find calves wearing the distinctive “yellow tag.”
If you feed your own calves, the FCCP tag qualifies them for value-added grid marketing through the Tyson’s Choice+ grid and the Greater Omaha G.O. Red grid. What is THR? Total Herd Reporting requires a calving report on every female over 16 months of age. This report keeps the cow on active inventory whether she calved, lost her calf or was open. The breeder must report data on the calf – or a reason code if the cow didn’t calve – to comply with THR requirements. The THR annual fee is $20 per cow. Calves can only be registered from active cows and there is no fee to register the calf. When do I report my Herd Inventory? Breeders should report their Herd Inventory to RAAA at the beginning of the calving season – spring or fall – disposing of any cows that they no longer wish to keep active. RAAA will bill THR on the active herd inventory, so it’s important that it’s accurate. What are the requirements for an animal ID/tattoo? An animal ID or tattoo is chosen by the member. You can only use an ID once per animal in the same year on the same gender. How to register a twin? To register a twin in REDSPro, utilize the blank line at the bottom of your data. Click in the dam registration number box, enter the dam’s registration number, then enter the corresponding twin calf data. How to register a calf with a sire or cow from another association? Will the calf have EPDs? Enter the RAAA registration number that is associated with the foreign (other association) registration number when entering data for the calf. The calf will receive EPDs after the National Cattle Evaluation run. How to search if an animal from another association is in the database? Go to “Animal Search” on redangus.org and change the association to the respective association. Then enter the registration number of your animal and click “Search.” If no search results are found, please send a copy of the pedigree to our office and we will build the pedigree in our system. 22 American Red Angus Magazine ■ November 2017
Effective Nov. 1, 2017 – Import animal(s) – animal registered with another association other than the Red Angus Association of America – will be assessed a $40-per-head processing fee to add the pedigree and DNA to the RAAA database.
What is the difference of an animal from another association being on “F” (foreign) status or being dual registered? An animal on “F”’ status indicates RAAA staff input the pedigree into the database and the member can use the animal as a dam or sire to a calf. The “F” status animal will not be registered under your herd and you will not pay a THR fee for a cow on “F” status. A dualregistered animal is registered under your herd and you will pay THR fees for the cows. You can also transfer an animal that is dual registered. Can I dual register an animal online? Yes. If an animal is at “F” status in the database, you can create a blank job and enter the RAAA registration number under the registration number column for the animal you want to dual register. Then you can finish entering the data needed to register the animal. Can I print a black-and-white certificate? Yes. Log in to REDSPro, select Herd Management, Form Downloads and enter the registration number of the animal for which you need to print a certificate. Within a job, why am I getting an error that my work is already in another job? REDSPro will only let a registration number be used in one job at a time. This is to keep from duplicating or overwriting data. How do I delete my custom groups? Log in to REDSPro and click on Herd Management then My Reports. Under Custom Groups is a trash can icon directly to the left of the group name. Click on the trash can icon and confirm you wish to delete the group. Are transfers free of cost? A transfer is free if submitted through REDSPro within 60 days of the sale or received at RAAA as a paper transfer within 60 days of the sale. If it is over 61 days, a late fee starts accruing for each animal.

How can I work offline? Excel templates are available for download on the website under Herd Management, Download. Members can download these templates and fill them out offline, then upload them into the database at a later point. When working in the template, members can hide columns but should never delete columns as the template will not upload into the system if it has been altered. DNA Update Effective Oct. 1, 2017, the price for the Zoetis i50K test has been decreased to $39 per head. This test includes enhanced EPDs plus parentage. The Zoetis DNA order form is listed at redangus.org/genetics/dna-tools/genetic-merit. October through March is the prime season for submitting DNA samples. Remember to plan ahead of the DNA rush by collecting samples at weaning and submitting them to RAAA as soon as possible. â–

This percentile rank will be benchmarked against the commercial females tested through Red Navigator in the database. The event will focus on nutrition, health and cattle handling, particularly at weaning time while working with the LiveWiRED project calves. LiveWiRED
LiveWiRED is a project conducted by the JRA to demonstrate the accuracy of EPDs and genetic testing. This is a unique opportunity to visually see differences by tracking calves where the maternal genetics have been isolated. This project began in 2015 when Red Penny, a registered Gelbvieh cow, was flushed to two Red Angus low-end bell curve bulls and three Red Angus high-end bell curve bulls. Those embryos were implanted in November 2016 and 51 calves were born in early August 2017. These calves will be DNA tested through tissue sampling in October. Data collection will be done in Lathrop, Missouri, where the calves are located. A large amount of the data analyzation will be conducted at North Dakota State University. A comparison of sires and their calves’ performance is currently underway.

‘Reds in the Rockies’ a Weeklong Success Story by Brandi Buzzard Frobose, Communications Coordinator
Red Angus members and producers descended upon Colorado Springs, Colorado, to hear from industry leaders and shape policy for the coming year at the 64th annual National Red Angus Convention held Sept. 13 - 15 at the DoubleTree by Hilton. The pre-convention program kickedoff Wednesday with the Commercial Cattlemen’s Symposium, coordinated by the Red Angus Association of America’s commercial marketing team, and focused on “Sizing up Profit.” More than 200 producers heard from a distinguished lineup of speakers featuring Dr. David Lalman, Oklahoma State University, Steve Wooten, Beatty Canyon Ranch, Dr. Tim Holt, Colorado State University, Paul Clayton, U.S. Meat Export Federation and a producer panel featuring John Price, C.J. Blew and Eric Christensen. Symposium speakers explored every segment of the beef industry to provide a well-rounded educational experience for producers – from cow size and efficiency to testing bulls for pulmonary arterial pressure (PAP) risk factors to beef demand in China. The lineup of speakers truly delivered an extremely valuable program. The Red Angus Foundation Inc. hosted an auction Wednesday night

to raise funds for research, innovation and leadership development. Multiple unique items were auctioned off including several art prints, vintage posters and wild rags from Leachman Cattle Co., a set of custom spurs from Twisted Steel Spurs, vintage historical Red Angus items and, the gem of the auction, the “Pick of the Herd” from Mushrush Red Angus. The auction raised nearly $30,000 for development of the Red Angus breed through research and revolution. Patsy Krause, fund raiser for RAFI, was very pleased with the auction and looks forward to further building the Red Angus legacy. The convention officially commenced Thursday morning with an opening general session featuring the “State of the Association” from CEO Tom Brink, in which he explained the tremendous growth Red Angus has experienced over the last year and shared with members the exciting potential for the breed.

2017 RAAA National Convention Dr. Gary Sides, beef and feedlot nutritionist with Zoetis Animal Health, had the audience on the edge of their seats as he explored nutrition science over the past four decades, which, he attests, has contributed to the obesity epidemic in the United States. Sides challenged attendees to read the most up-todate resources and books, and to share positive animal protein messages with a consumer audience that is puzzled by modern agriculture. Throughout the two full days of meetings, attendees heard from each of the organizational committees and the RAAA staff members that support committee work and activities. Each committee reviewed the past year’s accomplishments and laid out the plan of work for the coming months. The overall theme during committee reports was both the breed and RAAA are growing exponentially and the Red Angus advantage is spreading through the beef industry like wildfire. Perhaps this was most strongly evidenced by the marketing committee’s report during which Chessie Mitchell, RAAA Tag Programs Coordinator, shared that Feeder Calf Certification Program tag enrollments are on track to surpass the 200,000 mark this fiscal year. Additionally, the research from data on Superior Livestock Auction sales showed a $3.38 per hundredweight premium for FCCPtagged calves. Statistics of that kind sent a strong, impactful message to all producers and stakeholders. The Rocky Mountain Area 3 members played host for the week and held nothing back in the entertainment department. Following Thursday’s full program, attendees were treated to a private dinner and tour 40 American Red Angus Magazine ■ November 2017
of the ProRodeo Hall of Fame where they could browse hundreds of rare rodeo memorabilia items and learn about the legends of the time-honored sport. Friday afternoon was all business as members participated in caucus meetings, re-elected Bob Morton of Three Forks, Montana, as president of the Association for the 2017-2018 year, and approved proposed changes to the RAAA Constitution and Bylaws. Board members for the coming election cycle were also chosen by the membership; Connie Mushrush was re-elected as Director of Region B, Steve Koester was re-elected as Director of Area 5, Northern Plains; and Newley Hutchison was re-elected as Director of Area 6, Great Plains. Following the business meeting, the Board of Directors selected Kevin Miller as first vice president, Kyley DeVoe as second vice president, Steve Koester as secretary and Johnny Rogers as treasurer, to fill the leadership roles of the organization. As is tradition, the week was rounded out with the annual awards banquet which recognizes and reveres the superior producers in the Red Angus breed. Following an exceptional steak meal sponsored by Meyer Natural Angus, several Red Angus stakeholders were honored for their leadership and service to the breed. In closing, Steve Koester of Steele, North Dakota, and Peggy Bieber of Leola, South Dakota, announced the 2018 National Red Angus Convention will be held in Watertown, South Dakota, Sept. 12 - 14, 2018, where the theme will be “Reds Rising Over the Northern Plains.”

Committee Reports Progress on Udder and Foot Structure Projects by Steve Koester, Breed Improvement Committee Chairman, and Larry Keenan, Director of Breed Improvement During its report at the National Red Angus Convention, the Breed Improvement Committee reported significant progress on two important Red Angus genetic selection tool projects – udder and teat evaluation and foot structure. RAAA members have collected and submitted a substantial volume of udder score data – both suspension and teat size – and RAAA recently sent these data points to Colorado State University for genetic analysis. Ryan Boldt, CSU graduate student, reported on the progress of Udder and Teat EPD development at convention. Preliminary results indicate a moderate heritability for both udder suspension and teat size, and a strong positive ge-
netic correlation between these two traits. The Breed Improvement Committee encouraged members to submit current and historical udder score data to increase accuracy of the resulting genetic predictions within their herds and for the breed as a whole. Another exciting Breed Improvement initiative is the development of a foot structure genetic selection tool. RAAA has worked with Kansas State University on a foot structure scoring system and resulting genetic predictions. and structure data on approximately 2,000 Red Angus animals. While the data included 14 data points per animal, one goal of this research is to determine the minimal number of data points to collect on each animal in order to provide a meaningful selection tool. Preliminary results indicate a moderate heritability across the various traits. The Breed Improvement Committee anticipates Red Angus stakeholders may soon have two additional selection tools to help advance the breed. The future looks very bright for Red Angus with the commercial cattle industry being the ultimate winner. The Breed Improvement Committee will share advancements as the projects develop. ■

Big Country Farm Toys of Springdale, Arkansas, has unveiled its latest toy – a Red Angus cow-calf pair. This toy symbolizes real-life Red Angus ranching for kids who play with it, making it easier for them to imagine following in their parents’ footsteps or simply to dream about owning their own ranch someday. “We sell all of our cow-calf pairs together because that is how you purchase them in real life,” said Austin Huett of Big Country Farm Toys. “It is a quality toy that will last for many years.”

The toy is made of heavy-weight, plastic polyvinyl-chloride pipe and is hand-painted, just as all toys are that are manufactured by Big Country Farm Toys. The cow and calf are each wearing a yellow ear tag, symbolizing the Red Angus Feeder Certification Program tag.
The new toy was inspired by the Huett family’s Red Angus herd on the family farm in northwest Arkansas, as are many of the toys produced by Big Country Farm Toys. Several of the company’s followers also requested it make cattle toys, and since it makes up to five new toys each year, the Red Angus cow-calf toy seemed like a natural fit this year.
“The yellow FCCP tags verifying Red Angus genetics are a key distinction in the cattle industry,” Huett said. In real life, the FCCP tag verifies the animal wearing it is at least 50 percent Red Angus genetics, is source verified to the ranch of origin and is group age verified. The Red Angus Association of America manages the program which is process verified by the USDA. Research documents feeder calves wearing the FCCP tag bring $3.38 more per hundred-

This organization supports the beliefs and standards of the Red Angus Association of America, which serves the beef industry by enhancing and promoting the competitive advantages of Red Angus and Red Angus-influenced cattle. The RAAA provides commercial producers with the most objectively described cattle in the industry by seeking and implementing new technologies based on sound, scientific principles that measure traits of economic importance.

RAFI was organized in 2010 under the IRS code 501(c)(3), which makes contributions to the foundation tax deductible. Formation of RAFI allowed RAAA the flexibility to concentrate on enhancing and advancing the breed thus leaving the fundraising responsibilities to the newly formed organization, RAFI. Individuals who contribute to RAFI can specify for their gift to benefit breed research and development, support our future leaders in sponsorship of training for the Junior Red Angus Association of America, or leave the gift to the foundation’s general fund to be used as determined by the Board of Directors. All donations to RAFI may be tax deductible depending on the business practices of the donor.
