FCCP Helps Customers Achieve Goals This issue of ARA focuses on the common theme of commercial marketing and the Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program. I want to share a little background on the program to establish the significance of FCCP and its recent growth.

FCCP was started over 20 years ago and, in the last couple of years, it has really taken off! Throughout fiscal year 201516, the Association enrolled 157,350 animals between the Allied Access Program and FCCP. In fiscal year 2016-17, enrollment in both programs grew by over 18 percent, selling 185,685 tags to Red Angus stakeholders! In fact, we enrolled 163,250 animals in FCCP alone in 201617. This fiscal year is also starting out with a bang. In the month of July, over 5,000 animals were enrolled – that is the most enrollments ever in the month of July! Total enrollments in FCCP since its inception in 1994 are over 2 million animals. Why has the number of enrollments increased so dramatically over the last couple of years? Feeders and packers have learned that Red Angus-sired calves work and therefore they are more aggressive when purchasing these calves. Research shows that calves wearing the distinctive yellow FCCP ear tag are bringing a premium of $3.38 per cwt over non-tagged Red Angus calves. This equates to a value of $17 to $23 per head for an investment of less than $1 for the price of the tag! Simple math dictates that our commercial customers profit from FCCP. If our customers benefit, there is no reason not to urge them to enroll in the program. As I traveled around Montana last spring

6 American Red Angus Magazine n September 2017

attending Red Angus bull sales, I started to see more and more seedstock breeders partnering in the success of their customers. Some do this by offering to reimburse the customer a portion of their FCCP tag costs for every bull they purchase. Others help their customers to find the best avenue to market their tagged calves to buyers and feeders that utilize these value-added programs. Additionally, some breeders are on-site shipping day to help weigh their customers’ calves. Partnering in our customers’ accomplishments makes all of us more successful. We can all do our part to achieve the goal of adding more Red Angus cattle to the supply pipeline. This is something we, as seedstock breeders, need to be cognizant of all year long, not just when we are trying to market our own bulls. I am reminded of this as I watch the news of so much of Montana literally burning up in fires. We all remember the devastating fires in Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas in March. For the ranchers affected by these types of disasters, it is not just success, but literally their livelihoods that are at stake. We need to remember these people next year and the year after as they continue to rebuild their lives one building or fence at a time. Similarly, we need to encourage the success of our customers throughout the seasons, not just during bull sale season. Our success – and all of agriculture – relies on partnerships and friendships that are often forged out of hard times, but maintained through good times and into the future. As seedstock cattlemen and women, let’s put our efforts into the success of not only our operations, but those of our associates, as well. n

Creating High-Value Feeder Cattle The formula for creating highvalue feeder cattle is not overly complicated. Feeder cattle and calves that create exceptional value for the feedlots who purchase them are known to do four things very well.

Real-World Example We can see these principles at work in a set of Red Angus steers harvested earlier this year at National Beef in Dodge First, and most important, they stay healthy throughout the feeding period, City, Kansas. There were 82 head from a single central Kansas producer in the with minimal sickness and zero or overall group. Shown below is a table very little death loss. Next, they grow comparing the most valuable 15 head to fast and efficiently in the feedlot and the bottom, least valuable 15 steers. The produce a large number of saleable pounds at harvest. Third, superior cat- differences are striking. The top 15 steers outran and out-valued the bottle produce high-quality carcasses, tom-end steers by $485.30 per head, with a high percentage of Choice and which is a huge number of dollars by Prime grades. Fourth, and last, they any measuring stick. have enough muscle such that Yield Grade 4s and 5s are not a problem, How did those top steers create such even when fed to a fairly heavy endtremendous value? To start with, their point. carcass weights averaged 202 pounds above the low-value steers. They were These attributes constitute the “Big undoubtedly healthier during the feedFour” toward the creation of highing period, while the bottom-value, value feeder cattle that move through lighter weight steers probably experithe beef supply chain with great sucenced some morbidity. It is also a good cess. They dollar up exceedingly well bet that the heavier and more valuable for the feedlots who purchases them, steers had stronger growth genetics. and are therefore the kind of feeder

Association Commentary They had pound-making excellence programmed into their DNA. Good health and better growth performance paid off here in the form of more pounds to sell and more bankable dollars.

However, both groups had a very acceptable yield grades overall (averaging better than a YG3), and it is also evident that the top-value steers could have been shipped and harvested a week or two earlier and still maintained adequate external finish.

Marbling score and quality grade were also important in helping the high-value steers perform so well financially. Four Prime-grading carcasses and zero Selects were noted among the top steers, which rang the bell with 100 percent Choice and Prime carcasses. A much poorer showing was evident in the lowvalue group, with seven of 15 grading Select (47 percent), zero Primes and a net discount for quality grade on the whole.

In Order of Priority Health is always at the top of the list because even cattle with great genetics fall flat and fail to perform if they get sick. Second in importance when seeking to produce high-value feeder calves is growth rate and the ability to create ample weight. Pounds certainly do pay, and we can’t forget that. Third – and still very important – is marbling and quality grade. Even though U.S. quality grading percentages have risen during recent years, the market is still “paying for quality” every single day. Last on the list – and

The yield-grade advantage actually goes to the low-valued animals in our Kansas-based comparison.

fourth in importance – is yield grade. Both muscle and fat affect yield grade, and probably the main consideration here is to make sure your breeding and selection program eliminates all light-muscled cattle (rather than pursuing larger and larger ribeye at the expense of other traits). The Red Angus breed is blessed with great genetics, capable of making both superior replacement females and highly valuable feeder steers. Red Angus EPDs are readily available to help you make wise selection and breeding decisions whether your operation is seedstock or commercial. The traits that matter at the cow-calf level and beyond are well represented. Be sure to check out the Fall 2017 Red Angus EPDs on the RAAA website at www.redangus.org. n

Marketing Update

by Harold Bertz, Commercial Marketing Programs Coordinator

We’re Having a Record Year

Loosely borrowing a quote from the Eric Church song, “Record Year,” I penned the title of this month’s Marketing Update. Though Mr. Church is addressing a lost love in his song, I am using the title to thank all of you who have chosen to add value to your calf crop through the Feeder Calf Certification Program and Allied Access programs. Thanks to ranchers utilizing Red Angus Marketing Programs, we are having our own “Record Year.” For the fiscal year 2016-17, the FCCP enrollment grew an outstanding 14 percent while Allied Access swelled a whopping 62 percent – definitely a record year! Over the period of 2015-17, enrollments in FCCP have increased 39 percent with Allied Access enrollments up 27 percent during the same period (see Graph 2 on page 92). With no age and source premium during this time period, most Process Verified Programs have seen a decline. This sustained growth speaks volumes to the value of differentiating your calves as Red Angus in the marketplace. We on the RAAA Marketing team truly appreciate your involvement in this valuable program. We understand the extra effort it takes to enroll and identify these cattle and want to thank you for your commitment to genetic, age, and source verification through the RAAA. As enrollments have grown, so have rancher profits. In recent Kansas State University data from a study of Supe-

14 American Red Angus Magazine n September 2017

rior Livestock Auction sales from 2013-16, Red Angus-sired calves wearing the FCCP tag brought $3.38 per cwt more than their Red Angus-sired counterparts not wearing the tag. The mean weight of these 1,412 lots – 132,000 head – was 580 pounds. That means that the 99-cent investment in FCCP yellow tags yielded $19.60 per head! In future Marketing Updates in the ARA Magazine, we will be listing Auction Barns and their contacts that will be holding Special Feeder Calf Sales for FCCP- and Allied Access-tagged calves. These sales provide an opportunity for ranchers to assemble large groups of genetic-, age- and source-identified calves to attract buyers looking for these premium groups. As you market your calves this fall, don’t forget to remind buyers of the extra premiums finished FCCP calves receive through the Tyson Fresh Meats Choice+ grid and the Greater Omaha G.O. Red grid. These grids add premiums for top-grading and yielding carcasses. On behalf of all of us on the Marketing Team and the RAAA, thank you for helping us make the 2016-17 fiscal year, a “Record Year.” The continued growth of Red Angus is a direct result of the coordination between high-quality seedstock being used by the best ranchers in the business. We are focused on adding value to your calf crop to help you make 2017-18 your “Record Year.” n

Fall Ozark Bull and Female Sale

Established in 1954

Our Program

Ludvigson Stock Farms is a family operation established in 1954. Our roots are based in the commercial cow calf and cattle feeding sectors. We understand what is needed to be successful in these areas and it has shaped our breeding philosophies in the genetics that we produce.

Our Genetics We have established a breeding philosophy over the years that incorporates optimizing multiple traits without over emphasizing any single trait. We are now utilizing the patented Leachman $Profit Index that essentially takes our philosophy and ranks cattle on their ability to return a profit to our customer’s operations. Additionally, we also use the indexes developed by the RAAA in a multiple index system. Herd sires such as Platinum, X-Citement, 18 Karat and Mythos are perfect examples of our genetics that balance all traits and produce least cost cattle with exceptional phenotypes.

Our Bull Development We develop the bulls at the Green Springs Development Center located near Nevada, Missouri. The bulls are fed a high roughage ration designed to produce a 3.0 ADG with 0.2 of an inch of backfat. Each and every bull has been individually feed efficiency tested through a patented Growsafe System. The bulls run in 10-40 acre fescue pastures which allows for plenty of exercise and muscle development. All of the cattle are developed for low input conversions.

Our Team The LSF team includes not only our family but our managers, cooperators and customers. It takes a team to remain competitive in the industry today and we value the input from all of our team members.

Our Key Members Ryan Ludvi gson – is our main marketing representative and oversees the Ozark Performance Group. Park Ludvigson – is our main breeding specialist and the architect for the direction of our various breeding lines. He is also in charge of our data collection and information systems. In addition to this he runs our semen sales division.

Ricky Booth – is our Gulf Coast / Southeast Marketing specialist and represents us in those regions. Long family history in the region and understands what works well in this unique environment. Bri an Br igham – is a recent addition to our staff. Brian has been coordinating all of the Growsafe Systems at Colorado State University for the last three years. In addition to this Brian is also our “in house” geneticist and is helping us develop individual herd indexes for our customers. Brian will be a real “asset” to all of our customers through our "enhanced" customer service program.

Our Customers Our customers play an integral and ongoing part in our breeding program. It would be impossible for us to remain competitive without constant input by our customers. We have had many customers from the Ozarks, Southeast and Gulf Coast over the years and we felt that we could better serve their needs by developing bulls closer to their area. We have always bred our cattle to adapt to any environment but we feel that by developing bulls closer to our customers operations, we can be even more successful at providing a better product for our customers.

Registration and DNA Frequently Asked Questions

What is the MultiBreed NCE? The National Cattle Evaluation is the biannual process through which RAAA calculates EPDs for animals in the RAAA database. To ensure inclusion in the NCE, please provide all data possible. For Spring calves, if weaning weights and data are not available yet, it will be included in the next NCE run. The EPDs that result from this process are released January (Spring EPDs) and July/August (Fall EPDs) each year. NCE Deadline October 24 for Paper Submissions October 31 for Electronic What are the requirements of Total Herd Reporting? Each cow on active inventory (16 months of age and older) should report one of the three for each calving season. 1) calf record, 2) reason code for the cow, or 3) disposal code for the cow. Calving season for spring inventories is Jan. 1 to June 30. Calving season for fall inventories is July 1 to Dec. 31. Do I have to report calves born dead or that die shortly after birth? Yes, to comply with THR requirements, the cow must have record for giving birth to a calf. Sire, dam and birth date and/or year are required with applicable disposal code for the calf. What does the registration type indicate? R – Registered, met all requirements for registration I – Incomplete, Pre-Registered before reporting weaning weight and date. Once weaning data points are reported, the calf will move to registered status. C – Compute, record on file giving the cow documentation for having a calf, but the calf is not considered registered and cannot be transferred or used as a parent, and will not display EPDs.

U – not meeting all genetic defect requirements Z – not meeting DNA parentage requirements B - on hold for DNA exclusion in pedigree What information do I report when submitting calving records? The following is a list of fields of information for data reporting of calving records under THR guidelines. Please note, RAAA does have an open Herdbook, therefore fields of information may vary for the reporting process. • Dam Registration Number • Sire Registration Number • Calf ID and Prefix • Date of Birth or Birth Year • Sex • Birth Weight Group • Twin Code • Mating Code • Color • Horned, Polled or Scurred • Registration Code • Print Registration Paper • Name • Wean Date • Wean Weight • Wean Group • Feed Code What data points can I report that will enhance my animals’ EPDs and Accuracies? For more information on EPDs, please visit the RAAA website at redangus.org/genetics/ ranchers-guide-to-epds. • Calf Record with Pedigree Information • Birth Weight, Weaning Weight and Yearling Weight • Calving-Ease Scores • Body Condition Scores • Dam Mature Weight • Udder Scores – Suspension and Teat Size • Heifer Exposure Data • Ultrasound Data • Actual Carcass Data • Genomic Test

Increased Data = Increased Accuracy = Increased Reliability

What are No Progeny Reports? Females listed on the No Progeny Report are active on inventory but do not have a progeny record reported for compliance with THR requirements. The report should be used to submit a progeny record, reason or a disposal code for the previous calving year. If information is not reported for each cow, the females will be subject to inactivation. If all dams were reported on the weaning data worksheet, then you will not be requested to complete a No Progeny Report. The report can be accessed online in REDSPro. A printed report can be mailed upon request. Avoid Reactivation Fees Dams previously listed on the Fall Herd Inventory will be inactivated if a calf record or reason code for no calf record is not submitted for the previous year. The National Office will send out a list of females that have been inactivated. To avoid inactivation fees, submit a calf record or reason code. Spring 2017 Weaning Worksheets As a reminder that it is time to report data on Spring 2017-born calves. The weaning worksheets may be requested hard copy to report data. Data may also be reported online in REDSPro. To ensure data points are included in the next NCE, please submit by the end of October. Time to Update All Cooperator Agreement(s) If you have participated in an agreement between Agent and Cooperator, those original agreements have become null and void. The terms have also changed and will need to be reviewed by each participant. New agreements will require both the Agent and the Cooperator's signatures, a start date and specific end date.

Member Services Update The agreements should be renewed at the end of those terms. Once the agreement has ended, the Agent’s access is complete. The new agreement allows the Agent to gather data for marketing purposes (sale catalogs and promotion), complete registration status if needed, and transfer animals after the sale. The Agent only has access to animal data and not personal information such as billing, and the agreement only lasts for the time specified by the Cooperator. The new updated agreement is available for review and print at redangus.org/registration/forms. All agreements should be forwarded to the RAAA National Office via mail, fax or email to attention of either Angelia or Amanda. If you have questions after you read the agreement, please email angelia@redangus.org or amanda@redangus.org.

DNA

Why should I submit DNA early? • Reduce getting caught in a time crunch to complete a registration. • Samples may fail due to quantity or quality of sample and need to be resubmit. • Exclusions may result and need to try other animals. Weaning time always presents a great time to collect DNA samples. It allows for plenty of time before sale season to accomplish your goals. To be prepared here are a few ideas to help organize: • Order Test Kits from the National Office early. You can always order more than exactly needed. • If animals are being requested for Genomic Merit (GGP-HD, GGP-LD, GGPULD, Zoetis 50K and I50K) testing they are required to have a registration number to be able to be apply results. • Think about submitting an electronic order form to DNA@redangus.org to help speed up the submission process. What is the turnaround time? The turnaround time from the lab is 15

to 20 business days. This can vary if the sample needs to be reran because it failed the first time. Samples that fail are always ran twice to ensure the sample did truly fail the first time. This can take up to 30 days to receive results. Is a hair, blood or tissue sample better? Blood or tissue is better because hair has a higher statistic of failure. Hair also is more time consuming for the lab to extract the DNA. Due to these reasons, the lab is now charging a $2 processing fee per hair sample. The only time having a hair sample is beneficial is if samples are being submitted on animals that are twins. This is because the blood between twins is cross contaminated in utero. How can I prevent any delay in results? Submit good quality samples, complete paperwork and avoid cross contamination. Also, if sires or dams are not on file with RAAA, please have them sent to us from the respective lab. This ensures results are as accurate as possible. Should animals be registered before submitting DNA? If at all possible, yes. This ensures that DNA results will automatically be updated in the database. This is required for samples that are being submitted for Genomic Merit (GGP-HD, GGP-LD, GGP-ULD, Zoetis 50K and I50K). If samples submitted for all other tests do not have registration numbers at time of submission, the member must provide the registration number once it’s available or it will not be entered in database. Why do samples fail? • Cross Contamination (fresh, wet samples stacked on top of each other, new needle not used for each animal, twins) • Dirt/Feces • Chemicals (insecticide, tattoo ink, lotion, GermX, etc.) • Exposure to extreme heat and/or sunlight • Not enough sample • Blood samples submitted on twins (cross-contaminated in utero)

32 American Red Angus Magazine n September 2017

What does Qualified, Excluded and Not on File mean? Qualified - The sire/dam of the tested animal was on file and the test confirmed parentage. Excluded - The sire/dam of the tested animal was on file, and the test did NOT confirm parentage. Not on File - The sire/dam does not have a DNA profile on file at the lab with SNP markers and parentage cannot be confirmed. What if samples have completed parentage with the old technology (ISAG or Microsatellite)? If sires or dams have been completed for parentage using ISAG technology, they do meet the RAAA requirements for AI sires and ET dams. However, if calves must be parent verified to these animals, the original samples will either need to be converted to SNP technology, or a new sample will need to be submitted and tested.

Red Navigator Fall Promotion

A special reduced-rate promotion is being offered for the Red Navigator DNA test! Normally $25, this test designed for high-percentage (75 percent or greater) Red Angus commercial females will be available for just $19 per test from Aug. 15 through Nov. 30, 2017. By submitting blood or tissue samples, you will receive results in the form of a percentile rank for every Red Angus EPD and index on females tested. This percentile rank will be benchmarked against the commercial females tested through Red Navigator in the database. Additionally, Red Navigator includes sire verification. Katie Ochsner, commercial marketing specialist, will call to aid you in interpreting your results. Order your test kits by contacting Fallon Flick, fallon@redangus.org, 940-3873502, ext. 7.

Member Services Update

Full Access to REDSPro Now Available to Members Video tutorials offer step-by-step instruction for successful training

Member Services staff created tutorial videos to assist members through each function of REDSPro. Members can access the tutorials at redangus.org/search-tools.

The day members have anxiously awaited arrived Aug. 9, 2017, when RAAA staff released full access to the REDSPro database. Members can now log in to REDSPro with their member number and password to register, transfer, update weights and herd inventories, and pay their bill. They can perform all registration tasks online and in real time under the ‘Data Entry’ tab, eliminating processing turnaround and delays. “We appreciate members’ patience and understanding during this multiyear database construction process,” said RAAA CEO Tom Brink. “We believe it was worth the wait so we could provide our members with the most comprehensive, state-of-theart program, granting them full control of their data with immediate processing the very moment they hit the ‘Submit’ button. Members are able to review their registrations and updates online instantly.”

“Please take time to watch the tutorials,” said Registry and Office Manager Angelia Brooks. “These tutorials have been utilized by our 130-plus REDSPro beta testers with great success. You can start them, stop them or rewind them, and view them as many times a necessary. Best of all, you can have them open when maneuvering through the system for a step-by-step learning experience.” Members can view their account, pay their balance, enter new animal data, add weaning or yearling information, make corrections to existing data, look up members and buyers, create new buyers, transfer animals and more – all by logging in to their own account. “We know some members are apprehensive about working ‘live,’ but please understand we have designed the system so that everyone will be able to use it,” Brooks assured. “If you make a mistake, you can most often fix it yourself. If you

are unable to do so, we are just an email away.” If a member forgets their password, they can request an updated password from the login page. If they currently have data pending in the office and would prefer to enter it themselves – whether it was submitted electronic or on paper – they can email a staff member in the registration department who will return the data to the member. If the member used an electronic template, they will be able to upload the file and not have to start over. Registration certificates will still be printed and mailed from the National RAAA Office, and, of course, the new owner’s name will display correctly online. “We hope that you will be pleased with the capabilities and efficiency of REDSPro,” said Brooks. If you have additional questions or comments, please email Brooks at angelia@redangus.org or Assistant Registration Department Manager Amanda Travis at amanda@redangus.org. n

Passion with Purpose Delivers Pay Weight by Tracey Koester, American Red Angus Editorial Coordinator

The husband-wife team of Jon and Patty Tebelius exemplifies the passion of Red Angus cow-calf producers nationwide. Their ranch, located in central North Dakota near the town of Bowdon, faces environmental challenges from cold, harsh winters to hot summer droughts. Their Red Angus cowherd not only survives these extremes, but excels.

36 American Red Angus Magazine ■ July/August 2017

The Tebeliuses work with purpose to reach their specific production goals. They implement value-added programs by enrolling in the Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program, profiling their replacement heifers with the Red Navigator DNA test, following specific nutritional and health protocols, and building a reputation for delivering quality feeder calves that weigh up on shipping day. “If we could wave a magic wand over our cowherd,” said Jon, “our cows would be 100 percent red hided and weighing 1,300 to 1,350 pounds. We are getting close to reaching those goals.”

Over the past two decades, Jon and Patty built their cowherd by purchasing sets of cows and heifers when the opportunity arose. Unfortunately, most of those cows were from other breed compositions. Patty grew up in the western part of the state, and her parents had been using Red Angus bulls on their cowherd since the mid-1980s. Jon had been watching the breed and liked what he saw. “By 2011, we were using all Red Angus sires on our cowherd,” said Jon. “We were finally making our herd our own.” They began culling for traits that didn’t meet their criteria, and disposition was at the top of the list. “The temperament of Red Angus cattle is wonderful,” said Patty. “It’s a very important trait and we realized just how significant it was after we both suffered broken bones on different occasions. We just can’t afford that.” Jon added that the maternal instinct of their cows has also improved. “In our environment, it is essential that cows mother their calves right after birth and newborns get up and nurse. That vigor means life to a new calf and it’s amazing to watch.”

The majority of Jon and Patty’s cowherd is now Red Angus after years of culling and retaining their own replacement heifers.

Now, their cowherd is predominantly Red Angus through the purchase of heifers over the years and by retaining their own replacements. Several years ago, the ratio of steer calves to heifers was lopsided, leaving a smaller-than-normal number to choose from. They learned about the Red Navigator commercial female DNA profile and decided to try it. “The test identified which heifers carried the HerdBuilder traits we desired – stayability, fleshing ability, fertility, calving ease, growth and carcass,” explained Jon. “We were able to add the top-ranking heifers to our herd and sell the others.” Through their stringent selection criteria, the Tebeliuses have also tightened their calving window with 80 percent calving in the first 30 days, improved the maternal instincts and mothering ability of their cows, and increased the average weaning weight of their calves. “I appreciate cows that work for us,” said Jon, “instead of us working for our cows.” Passionate Production With the harsh winters Mother Nature dishes out in central North Dakota, the Tebeliuses feel a 1,300-weight cow with a body condition score of 6 can handle the brutally cold temperatures, driving wind and excessive snowfall. Jon continued, “I cannot emphasize enough the importance of a strong, custom-formulated mineral program. If the cows have a good nutritional foundation, we can bed and feed our way out of any weather-related situation.” American Red Angus Magazine ■ September 2017 37

Passion with Purpose Delivers Pay Weight “Our vaccination protocol works hand in hand with our mineral program to get the most out of each,” added Patty. They enlist the expertise of their feed company’s nutritionist and their veterinarian’s recommendations for optimal herd health. The Tebeliuses weigh and band each newborn calf, and tag it with the yellow FCCP tag. Additionally, they administer an intranasal vaccine to each calf to prime its immune system, aiding in the prevention of respiratory disease. “Because we calve in February, all cows go through the barn and are in tight quarters. Even though we are diligent about cleaning pens and rebedding, the nasal vaccine is an essential precaution to keep our calves healthy,” said Jon. In April, Jon and Patty vaccinate to aid in the prevention of clostridial diseases, viral and bacterial respiratory ailments, and bovine viral diarrhea. They then sort pairs into seven different breeding groups on their ranch. Because of the northern climate, grass is just starting to grow in North Dakota in April, so Jon continues to feed in the pasture until forage quantity and quality is adequate. “It’s a distinct reproductive advantage to continue to manage their nutritional intake during the first 35 days of breeding,” he said. At the end of May, they haul pairs to three different summer pastures for the remaining breeding season. They inject and pour for parasite and insect control at that time. “It’s such a relief to get the cows out on clean, fresh pasture in the spring,” said Patty. “They are good mothers and happy to be out on green grass to raise a healthy calf.”

Tebeliuses identify their calves with the yellow FCCP tag, ensuring age, source and verified Red Angus genetics. Yearling heifers stay at home until the end of June when the Tebeliuses pull the bulls and then haul the replacements to their summer pasture. They pregnancy ultrasound the cows and heifers the first week of August. Jon and Patty wean in mid-September, weighing each calf individually and vaccinating to boost their disease-resistance titer. They believe their investment in a cattle scale was one of their most important management decisions. “We weigh the calves at weaning and again in three weeks when we give another round of shots,” said Jon. “That weight information tells us exactly how the cattle are gaining and converting, and if we need to make nutritional adjustments.” They shared those weights with their nutritionist who studied their feed conversion and rate of gain, confirming they were right on track. The Tebeliuses plan for a 50-day weaning period before shipping to ensure the calves are healthy, eating well and ready for the next phase of production. Purposeful Marketing In 2014 at the encouragement of a friend, they listed their calves in Superior Livestock Auction’s late-August Big Horn Classic Sale in Sheridan, Wyoming. They guaranteed a potload of 740-weight steers for early-November delivery which drew active bidding and top dollar in their weight division.

Disposition is of utmost importance and, while most aren’t pets like this ranch-favorite cow, they do respect their human handlers. 38 American Red Angus Magazine ■ September 2017

“The FCCP tag validates our Red Angus genetics along with age and source,” said Jon. “The Superior buyers recognize and trust calves identified as Red Angus and, along with our nutrition, vaccination and pre-weaning management practices, we are building a solid reputation for our cattle.”

Passion with Purpose Delivers Pay Weight To deliver what they promised, Jon and Patty weigh and sort their steers to fulfill the weight requirements. “We want to keep our buyers happy,” said Patty, “so we sort for a very consistent pot load of steers right out of the heart our pen.” Jon and Patty also recognize the value of their local sale barns and market their heavyweights, lighter calves and extra heifers through the ring. “We sell about half our calves through Superior and the other half locally,” said Jon. “We share the same management information at the sale barn as we do in the video auction. We want to build our reputation with the buyers on the seats, too.” “The heifers usually sell over feeder price and will be bred. The Red Angus female is much more valuable as a mother cow than in a feedlot,” he said. Advancing Their Future Jon and Patty feel they are just starting to hit their stride with their genetics and look forward to the future. They rely on resources, information and experts to escalate their success. They both study the bull sale catalogs that arrive in the mailbox and analyze pedigrees, EPDs and performance data before marking which bulls they will look at on sale day. “We have extra confidence in EPDs because of the Red

Angus Association of America’s Total Herd Reporting,” said Jon. “Seedstock breeders have to report all their calves, not just the ones from their top cows,” added Patty, “and that gives us commercial producers assurance we can trust the selection tools in a bull sale catalog.” The Tebeliuses appreciate the advancements in DNA profiling, selection indices and EPDs to help them identify which bulls will meet their expectations for their herd. They are open to exploring new management practices and valueadded marketing techniques to identify and deliver top quality to their buyers. Because of their sire selection criteria, Jon and Patty’s calves meet the high-growth and high-carcass-value criteria for Top Dollar Angus®. Adding this label at market time assures buyers the calves will perform well in the yard and on the rail. “We are always striving to improve,” concluded Jon. “We enjoy learning new practices and visiting with industry experts for insight on how we can deliver a better product to feed the world. I’ll admit it – I’m happy to be a secondhand vegetarian and I enjoy a juicy steak. We want to share that experience with our consumers.” ■

The Red Navigator DNA test helped Jon and Patty identify which heifers possessed the best HerdBuilder traits and therefore re-entered the herd as replacements.

Red Angus EPDs – Ranch Tested, Feedlot Trusted by Larry Keenan, Director of Breed Improvement

RAAA believes in the science behind its genetic selection tools and can validate their reliability with multiple examples demonstrating EPDs’ effectiveness. While data points for birth, weaning and yearling weights are abundant and easily gathered, researchers must prepare a more in-depth plan to collect carcass information. Ultrasound scan records offer a valuable snapshot under the hide and help increase carcass EPD accuracies of young seedstock. Combined with parental EPDs and genomic profiling, producers can confidently rely on the expected carcass merit differences between animals. However, actual carcass data from a sire’s offspring will help further prove the dependability of his EPDs. One of the valuable breed-improvement programs offered by RAAA is the Carcass Progeny Test. This program is designed to validate the carcass genetics of young, unproven bulls. Bulls being tested, along with a high-accuracy reference sire, are randomly mated via artificial insemination to a single cowherd and performance data are collected on the resulting calves through harvest.

Table 1.

Table 2.

The 2012 CPT stands out as a great example to learn from, as 100 percent of the steer calves were harvested on the same day. Given that EPDs are advocated as being able to predict differences in average progeny performance, the 2012 CPT dataset provides for a ‘real-world’ evaluation of the reliability of carcass EPDs on young, unproven bulls. To conduct this study, each of the sires’ Marbling and Ribeye Area EPDs at the time of breeding (Spring 2012) were compared to the average Marbling and Ribeye Area data of their resulting steer progeny, which is presented in Tables 1 and 2. 48 American Red Angus Magazine ■ September 2017

Red Angus EPDs – Ranch Tested, Feedlot Trusted Sires participating in the 2012 CPT • Bieber Rollin Deep Y118 (#1436844), • Brown 3K Stakeholder X7870 (#1379607), • LSF Saga 1040Y (#1445368) and • Messmer Packer S008 (#1109534) - Served as the reference sire

Marbling Observations: • In reviewing the Spring 2012 EPDs of these bulls, the bulls break into two groups: Higher Marbling EPDs – Packer and Stakeholder; and Lower Marbling EPDs – Saga and Rollin Deep. • While there’s a modest re-ranking within the two Marbling EPD groups, the average progeny of the two higher Marbling EPD bulls absolutely post higher average marbling scores as compared to the two lower Marbling EPD bulls. Ribeye Area Observations: • In evaluating the four sires’ genetic merit for Ribeye Area based on their Spring 2012 EPDs, the sires sort into

three groups: High – Packer; Average – Stakeholder and Rollin Deep; and Low – Saga. • The EPD groups of the bulls at breeding (High, Average and Low) accurately predict the Ribeye Area performance of their resulting CPT offspring. • Due to minor differences, there’s modest re-ranking within the Average group. However, the progeny group with the highest average progeny Ribeye Area were sired by the High Ribeye EPD sire, Packer, and the progeny group with the lowest average progeny Ribeye Area were sired by the Low Ribeye EPD sire, Saga. Keep in mind that the Spring 2012 EPDs on the test sires used in this evaluation (Stakeholder, Rollin Deep and Saga) were non-parent EPDs. The data included in their EPD calculations were limited to their pedigree and own ultrasound information. The carcass EPDs of these bulls were low accuracy, yet the progeny data supports the validity and use of carcass EPDs when making selection decisions for important carcass traits such as marbling and muscling. ■

Bottom line: EPDs work well to predict actual carcass results.

Orion Beef Group

November 20, 2017 150 Coming Two Year Old Bulls 250 Registered Bred Females

Established in 1954

Weschenfelder Development Center • Shepherd, MT • 12:00 noon MST Our Program

Ludvigson Stock Farms is a family operation established in 1954. Our roots are based in the commercial cow calf and cattle feeding sectors. We understand what is needed to be successful in these areas and it has shaped our breeding philosophies in the genetics that we produce.

Our Ranches

The Elite Nucleus herd runs on our "home" ranch located 10 miles south of Lewistown, Montana in the Snowy Mountains. We also have an advanced genetics center located in Iowa where our parents began farming over 50 years ago.

Our Genetics

We have established a breeding philosophy that incorporates optimizing multiple traits withoutoveremphasizinganysingletrait. Our herdsires Takeover, Night Calver, and Tyson are perfect examples that balance all traits and produce least cost cattle with exceptional phenotypes. Our next generation of herd sires such as Titonka, Platinum and Excitement continue this tradition and headline the bulls that will shape our program in the next few years.

Our Bull and Heifer Development

We develop our bulls and females at the Weschenfelder Development Center just outside of Shepherd, MT. The bulls are fed a high roughage ration designed to produce a 3.0 lb ADG with 0.2 of an inch back fat. The replacement females are fed a carrying ration and we have maintained over an 80% first service AI conception rate on our females. The cattle are developed for large rugged environments.

Our Team

The LSF team includes not only our family but our managers, cooperators and customers. It takes a team to remain competitive in the industry today and we value the input from all of our team members.

Our Key Members:

• Ryan Ludvigson – is our main marketing representative and oversees the cowherd and development operations in Montana. • Park Ludvigson – is our main breeding specialist, managing our embryo collection and transfer program as well as our embryo export program. • Steve Newberry - our chief business strategist that oversees LN Cattle Company operations. • Rodger Reitman – Our main reproductive specialist and development manager – numerous years experience with seed stock and commercial herds. • Kraig Sweeney - Our ranch manager that oversees the Elite Nucleus Herd in Lewistown. Well qualified with years of experience in seedstock and commercial cow calf production.

Our Customers

Our customers play an integral and ongoing part in our breeding program. It would be impossible for us to remain competitive without constant input by our customers. Our customer's environments range from the High Desert to the High Plains and from the Midwest to the Rio Grande. Adaptability of our genetics has been the key to why our customers come back year after year.

$Profitability

Again this year, every bull will have a $Profit Index. This index ranks cattle on their ability to return “profit” to the beef industry. We believe that this index will simplify the selection process for our customers and move their operations in the right direction faster in this competitive market. Please contact us to visit about this ground breaking index as well as to receive materials that explain the process in more detail.

Do All the Different Programs Pay? by Kenny Stauffer, Top Dollar Angus® General Manager

$ ®

Are you a producer who questions all the “certification stickers?” Do they pay? Do they confuse you? Or maybe you ask, “How big of a hassle is it to get certified?” With most of the summer video sales wrapping up over the next couple of weeks, it is safe to say, “Program cattle work!” From the producer to the auction company, industry professionals agree that program cattle paid dividends throughout the summer and, in many cases, substantial premiums. No matter which program your operation is geared up for, there is a reputable company ready to walk you through the qualification process. One thing that all programs have in common is added value. Today more than ever, you must focus on differentiation and how to make your cattle stand out. Here is a brief overview of some top value-added programs and the premiums we are witnessing.

Genetic Certification: Top Dollar Angus® If you have the carcass merit and growth genetics that allow your herd to rank in the top 25 percent of the industry, and desire to receive premiums above market average, look to Top Dollar Angus for your herd’s genetic certification. It is simple to qualify; submit the past six years of all registered sires used or DNA, and Top Dollar Angus will evaluate your herd. If your herd ranks in the top 25 percent for growth and carcass traits, you will be certified and Top Dollar Angus is now your marketing agent. Currently, genetic certified cattle are seeing a $5- to $6-per-cwt premium over non-certified cattle. Export Programs: Age and Source Verification and NHTC IMI Global-NHTC Red Angus Association – Age and Source Verification Age and source verification is mandatory for your cattle to be eligible for export. This program is a USDA Process Verified Program that authenticates your cattle to be of a certain age and source. To get qualified, it may require an on-site audit and you will need detailed calving records showing the dates of the first and last calves born. To comply with export regulations, cattle must be individually identified with an 840-EID tag, and have a copy of recent sale receipts. If interested in getting your cattle age and source verified, look to RAAA’s yellow tag Feeder Calf Certification Program. Independent research confirms 580-pound, FCCP-enrolled calves earned $3.38 per cwt more than non-FCCP-tagged Red Angus calves. Another export driven program, Non-Hormonal Treated Cattle, is focused on the European Union. Cattle that are eligible for NHTC are hormone free with no implants or prostaglandins such as Lutalyse or MGA. This certification also requires an on-site PVP audit. Currently, there is a high demand for NHTC-approved cattle with premiums of $6 to $7 per cwt over non-verified cattle.

Do All the Different Programs Pay?

Specialty Program Markets: All-Natural and GAP IMI Global Verified All-Natural and Global Animal Partnership programs are intended for the local specialty markets with an emphasis on the Natural and Whole Food retailers, both of which require third-party verification and a PVP audit. To be eligible for All-Natural certification, cattle must never have received hormones, antibiotics, ionophores or animal by-products. GAP eligibility differs depending on the level at which a producer is qualified. In the beef industry, there are two predominate levels – 1 and 4. This audit is very extensive. Please contact IMI Global for full details, but here are a few of the areas that they look at on your operation. • Mortality records • Dystocia and calving problems • Lameness and treatment protocols • Transportation and Hauling – 24, 16, 12 hours or less • Overall health and body condition of livestock • Castration & dehorning methods

If you have the outlets and the market for these two programs, you have the potential for generous premiums ranging from $5 to $10 per cwt over non-certified cattle. I hope this explains some of the different value-added programs and will initiate your thought process on which programs fit your operation. If you have questions or are interested in capturing added value premiums, please contact any of these companies. n

Key Management Strategies Add Return on Investment By Tracey Koester, American Red Angus Magazine Editorial Coordinator

Fundamental practices – such as ear tagging, vaccinating and castrating – can add a substantial return on investment to feeder calves on sale day. Buyers recognize the trickle-down effect that these practices have in identifying quality genetics and bringing healthy cattle to the feed yard. Recent research validates these facts – and the increased profit margin for cow-calf producers. Cattlemen who invest even a modest amount of time and money can realize a genuine increase in profit. To Tag or Not to Tag? The simple practice of applying an ear tag could add up to $20 per head on sale day, but not just any tag will do. In an independent study, Kansas State University evaluated the price of Red Angus calves sold on Superior Livestock Auction’s video sales from 2013 to 2016. The study assessed 1,412 lots of beef calves representing 131,975 head through 94 video auctions. The researchers specifically compared the price of Red Angus calves enrolled in the Feeder Calf Certification Program to calves described as Red Angus sired,

but not wearing the Red Angus yellow tag. What they learned was that the FCCP designation significantly increased the sale price of 580-pound calves by an impressive $3.38 per hundredweight – or nearly $20 per calf. For a 99-cent investment for the tag and no herd enrollment fees, that’s an impressive return on investment just by snapping a tag into a calf’s ear before it leaves its ranch of origin. The FCCP tag guarantees USDA age and source verification and that the calf

72 American Red Angus Magazine ■ September 2017

is at least 50 percent Red Angus in its genetic makeup. Enrollment is easy for producers who use registered Red Angus bulls through either AI or natural service. A simple call to the Red Angus Association of America to answer a few basic management questions will get the ball rolling and ultimately yield more profit on sale day. Marcus Harward of Richfield, North Carolina, owns and manages three auction markets in the Carolinas as well as Mid-Atlantic Cattle Sales, a video auction company.

Key Management Strategies Add Return on Investment His businesses market nearly 140,000 head annually. He and his family also run 700 mother cows. “Program enrollment adds value,” said Harward. “We see quality cattle enrolled in a program bring a 10- to 20cent premium – whether it’s RAAA’s Feeder Calf Certification Program or an all-natural or hormone-free program.” He agrees that verified genetics play a key role in a buyer’s decision to purchase a set of calves, as does the producer’s reputation. “Establish quality and genetics first, then find a program that fits your operation,” he advised. “Take time to learn what the buyers like and what premiums they are willing to pay. Enroll in an established program and leverage it to build a good reputation for you and your cattle.” He said ranchers will prosper more by staying in a program over 20 years than by jumping around trying to outguess the market. “Identify what works for you, your ranch and your grass. See what brings the most money and determine when you want to sell your cattle. That is your starting point. Now, take your calendar and back up to when you want to begin calving, and turn out your bulls accordingly.” An Ounce of Prevention The adage, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” holds true for healthy feedlot cattle. K-State and RAAA recently teamed up to survey beef cow-calf veterinarians on the common health care practices they recommend to their clients. These experienced bovine health experts prescribed disease prevention measures through strategic vaccination and parasite control, as well as management practices including castration and weaning for 45 days or more before shipping. They also expressed the im-

portance of nutrition and mineral programs during the preconditioning and weaning phases of a calf’s life. Randy Hodge, a cattle buyer and owner of Hodge Livestock Network, Inc., of Newport, Tennessee, said health issues are the No. 1 factor in determining the profitability of a set of calves. When purchasing stockyard cattle, his wish list includes two rounds of modified-live-viral vaccinations including pasteurella. “I think the modified-live vaccines offer the best immunity,” said Hodge. “And for the vaccinations to work properly, the cattle need to be on a good nutrition and mineral program.” He likes to see calves weaned a minimum of 45 days but prefers 60, and wants the calves trained to eat from a bunk and drink from waterers.

will perform like they expect. “When we analyze the market reports, we find properly weaned and vaccinated cattle receive a $5 to $7 premium per hundredweight.” Hodge backgrounds his purchased calves until they reach 800 to 900 pounds, then sends them 1,200 miles to a finishing yard in the Midwest. “Everything we do is designed to prepare these calves for shipping day. We give them their final booster 21 days before shipping to be the most effective.” Veterinarians surveyed in Red Angus/K-State research agreed that vaccines need time to work. Thirty percent recommended the last preventative vaccine should be administered seven to 14 days before shipping, while 67 percent prefer varying times within a 15- to 45-day window.

“The hardest person to sell on these management practices is the producer,” said Hodge. “They want to see immediate premium results, but sometimes they gain value in added weight and efficiency off their farm. That adds profitability as well.”

“Shipping is a stressful time. For cattle that aren’t properly weaned and vaccinated, death loss and illness are much higher than for calves that are well prepared.”

When buyers build a relationship with producers, they can trust that the cattle

Key Management Strategies Add Return on Investment “These cattle need to be ready for next stage of their life. Feedlots don’t need to have problems when the calves come off the truck,” he said. “They need to be healthy and ready to eat so they grow and grade.” When Harward loads cattle on trucks in the Carolinas, they have a long trip ahead of them. Harward’s team works hard to prepare cattle for the often 1,400-mile trip to feedlots in the Midwest or Great Plains. “We make sure they have hay, water and rest before they get on the truck,” he said. “We found it’s best to load calves early in the morning after their body temperatures have cooled down in the night. We don’t want to put that heat on the truck.” If cattle are showing stress from heat and humidity, his truckers will break up the 22- to 24-hour trip with a rest stop along the way.

Manage for Profit Management plays a crucial role in delivering healthy calves to the feedlot. A full vaccination protocol, at least a 45day weaning period, and backgrounding combine to add value that the buyers recognize and are willing to reward.

76 American Red Angus Magazine ■ September 2017

Harward said, “We have to do everything right at home – castration, timely and proper injections, low-stress handling – to provide the tastiest, most tender product for our consumers. If they are satisfied eating beef they won’t turn to other protein sources.”

Key Management Strategies Add Return on Investment The Red Angus/K-State health study reported 87 percent of the surveyed veterinarians recommend castration before three months of age. The younger the calf, the less stressful the procedure will be. Steering bull calves prevents secondary sex characteristics, minimizes aggressive behavior, facilitates easy handling and improves beef quality. “Cattlemen should also consider fly and parasite control for improved rates of gain,” said Hodge. ”Parasites harm so many things – conception, weight gain, eye health – that is why controlling them should be a standard practice.” In addition to health and management, genetics affect cattle behavior. Harward said, “Docility is an extremely important trait. Calm cattle simply gain better than wild ones.”

Producers who aren’t following these recommended practices should consider adding them to their management plan. Over the years, they will improve the health and well-being of their cattle, build relationships with buyers and feeders, and ultimately add value to their calves. “Whether your goal is to reach the export markets with age- and sourceverified all-natural calves, or feed the American population, cattle producers need to consider who is purchasing the meat we raise,” concluded Hodge. “Our consumers – especially the younger generation – want to know where their food comes from. They are well educated and more demanding. We need to do the best job we can on our operations and at every step along the production chain. Then, we can be proud of the product we raise.” ■

InspiRED to Lead: 2017 JRA Round-Up by Genna VanWye, JRA President

At the 2017 JRA Round-Up, June 28 - July 1, 30 Red Angus juniors and two Canadian Junior Angus Association guests toured the states of Iowa and South Dakota, gaining knowledge relative to the Red Angus breed, beef industry and agriculture.

InspiRED by Agriculture The regions visited in South Dakota and Iowa are ones that put a heavy focus on agriculture. During the week of Round-Up, juniors had the opportunity to learn and explore fields of agriculture that they may not deal with on a daily basis. One such visit was the Hy-Vee Distribution Center in Cherokee, Iowa. Juniors toured this center that distributes to 223 Hy-Vee grocery stores in seven states. Another stop was Plymouth Dairy, which sells their milk exclusively to Wells Blue Bunny and dedicates time to educating people about dairy production. InspiRED by Beef Several opportunities to further beef knowledge and skills were offered during Round-Up. Beef stops included the South Dakota State University Cow-Calf Research and Teaching Unit, Sioux Falls Regional Livestock, the Opportunities Farm, Trans Ova Genetics, Grand Meadow Feeders and Solution Genetics. These stops included topics such as marketing, feedlot housing systems, nutrition, reproduction and raising registered cattle. InspiRED to Learn Throughout the week, three guest speakers shared their ideas and experiences with juniors. On the opening night of Round-Up, Holly Hoffman, a Survivor Nicaragua finalist, shared her experiences with juniors. She encouraged juniors to take opportunities and to never give up. While at Dordt College, Zeb Gray presented to juniors on the three ways of marketing cattle (live, carcass 80 American Red Angus Magazine â– September 2017

and on a grid). He explained and provided examples of determining quality and yield grades of live cattle based on conditioning and muscling. At the end of the night, teams challenged each other as they bought fat cattle through a mock live auction process, complete with an award winning auctioneer. Zeb then calculated how those cattle would sell on a grid and a winner was determined. Amanda Radke of the Beef Daily blog, shared her story with juniors at the Round-Up banquet. She discussed her experiences advocating for agriculture and writing about timely beef industry news. InspiRED to Achieve Juniors competed in four national contests throughout the week of Round-Up, demonstrating livestock knowledge and leadership skills. Red Angus Promotions The Red Angus Promotions contest is designed to develop marketing and written communication skills. This year’s contest asked juniors to develop a print advertisement promoting the JRA LiveWiRED campaign, accompanied by a cover letter explaining the piece. Agriculture Advocacy The Agriculture Advocacy contest targets the development of written and oral communication skills. Juniors engaged in a radio interview, presented an oral message, and prepared a written response in a mock blog entry. Each piece focused on the utilization of science and technology in the beef industry.

InspiRED to Lead: 2017 JRA Round-Up Meat Animal Evaluation The Meat Animal Evaluation contest focuses on developing skills in cattle evaluation and product knowledge. SDSU put together several classes for both live and meat evaluation. The classes included heifer placing, heifer keep/cull, ribeye placing, yield grade calculation and retail cut identification.

Stockman’s Knowledge The Stockman’s Knowledge contest targets beef knowledge and cattlemen skills. The contest consisted of an exam, 10 pieces of equipment to identify, and three pieces of equipment to explain or demonstrate the use of to a panel of judges. InspiRED to do Business The JRA Annual Meeting was conducted at Round-Up. During the meeting, the JRA Board provided an overview of the Association’s activities and an update on the Board’s

strategies to fulfill the organization’s purpose. Four constitutional amendments were brought forth and passed by the membership. This included: 1. Change the Association address from Denton, Texas, to Commerce City, Colorado. 2. Change the length of JRA board terms from two years to one year. 3. Remove the regional assignments of board seats. 4. Allowance to fill a vacant board seat. Three members were elected to serve on the board: Genna VanWye of Missouri; Kaitlyn Templeton of North Carolina, and Madison Adams of North Carolina. These three join Savannah Howard of North Carolina, and Royce McPhee-Bayha of California, as they begin their second year of service on the Board.

InspiRED to Build Friendships Round-Up is an excellent opportunity to meet JRA juniors from all across the country, and even Canada. With 11 states represented and several team-building activities planned, juniors connected and built many friendships. Throughout the week, juniors competed alongside team members of various age ranges and home states in challenges. These challenges were meant to develop team skills and allow juniors from various age ranges to create friendships. A winning team was awarded at the end of the week. Juniors were inspired to do many great things during the week of Round-Up. Iowa and South Dakota provided great places to learn about Red Angus, beef and agricultural production. Friendships were built, memories were made, skills were developed and knowledge was gained.

• Further research into the Superior Livestock Auction data shows that FCCP-enrolled feeder calves brought $3.38 more per cwt than non-enrolled or non-FCCP-tagged Red Angus-influenced calves. That’s nearly a $20-per-head increase in sale value when calculated on the average weight of the calves in the study (580 pounds). Red Angus Seedstock Growing in Popularity Registration numbers swelled to an all-time high of 80,041 head for 2016-17, up 29 percent compared to last year’s 62,094 head. The prior year’s increase in registrations was also 29 percent, so in just two years, the Red Angus breed has grown by an amazing 66 percent! The active Red Angus cow inventory has also expanded at a phenomenal rate. 88 American Red Angus Magazine ■ September 2017

Commercial Focus Continues The commercial emphasis long demonstrated by Red Angus is significantly contributing to its success. This commitment by Red Angus breeders to provide profitable genetics to U.S. cattle raisers has served the breed well. To that end, several important milestones were reached during the past fiscal year:

80,000

2015

The Red Angus breed has gathered a strong head of steam and the rapid growth that has been occurring for some time was nothing less than stellar during the recently completed 2016-17 fiscal year. Large increases in registration numbers vaulted Red Angus into a virtual tie as the third largest beef breed in the U.S. That sends a clear message: Red Angus cattle are in high demand and can often be found topping the market across the nation.

RAAA Year in Review During the past fiscal year, 106,371 cows were counted on the breed’s roster, representing a 21 percent increase over the previous year. Clearly, the Red Angus breed is as large and influential in the American beef business as it has ever been. Members and commercial customers commonly report a dilemma that goes with strong demand for Red Angus heifers and older females. These females are generally easy to sell at favorable prices, yet some must be kept in their own herd to maintain or increase numbers at home.

The industry is changing; it’s time to take cattle feeding down a new road. Recent advancements in cattle nutrition have opened new routes to help limit pulls, treatment and positively benefit the health of an animal. Adopting a new measure of prevention through the feed is an important first step to help minimize delays on the road ahead. Take a new road with ProTernative® - a proven probiotic that positively activates the immune system of cattle during times of stress. ProTernative works in the lower gut to influence the animal’s natural immunity through an internal active process that only a specific, robust and active live yeast can deliver.

The road you’ve always taken doesn’t cut it anymore. Feed ProTernative and take a new measure of prevention.

90 American Red Angus Magazine ■ September 2017

Another key point is that commercial cattlemen rely heavily on EPDs and other data when making their purchasing and ultimately their breeding decisions. Red Angus has been in alignment with this thinking for decades, placing major emphasis on scientifically sound, accurate data that is packaged and presented with a “keep it simple” philosophy which resonates with cow-calf producers in all regions of the country. This approach will continue to pay dividends down the road, both for Red Angus customers and those producing Red Angus seedstock. Membership Growth Another important measure of success is growth in memberships and customers. During fiscal year 2016-17, regular RAAA memberships grew to 2,642 and Junior members increased to 896, a boost of 6 percent and 4 percent, respectively. Red Angus has also added a tremendous number of new bull customers, which will be reported on in future issues of the ARA Magazine. The cattle market experienced all-time high prices in 2014 and early 2015. Unfortunately, the market has suffered somewhat since then, and it could be a while before such high prices are seen again. However, it is certain that the right genetics, when combined with good management, will keep the industry profitable. We strongly believe that Red Angus cattle are a part of that equation. Given the breed’s rapid growth rate, it is safe to say that the beef industry agrees. ■

Koester Named Country Woman of the Year Tracey Koester of Steele, North Dakota, was selected as Farm & Ranch Guide's 2017 Country Woman of the Year. Koester, who was selected from a field of six finalists, was presented the award during the annual program held in July. “I was shocked,” Koester said upon hearing her name called as the 24th recipient of the award. “I expected it to be one of the other finalists. It’s very humbling.” Tracey and her husband Steve ranch in south central North Dakota. Their two daughters – Kacey and Shaye – are also involved in their operation. In addition to working on their ranch, Koester is the owner/manager of Cow Camp Promotions that specializes in seedstock sales promotion, catalogs and ad design. She is also the editorial coordinator for the American Red Angus Magazine. Koester had high praise for past County Woman winners, as well as the other five finalists. “So many amazing women have been nominated and recognized for this award,” she said. “I just do what I do – care of our cattle and whatever else needs to be done on a day-to-day basis. I don’t expect recognition for that, but I am very honored.” Earlier in her career, Koester worked at Farm & Ranch Guide and then for the North Dakota Stockmen’s Association. Her typical day begins before sunrise, working on projects for her clients or communications for the Red Angus Association of America. Depending on the time of year, she is either helping calve their Red Angus herd in the fall or their commercial

cows in the spring, helping with chores, and other cattle and ranch work. Although only one winner can be selected, the County Woman of the Year program is designed to bring recognition to all women in agriculture, according to Pat Sitter, general manager of Farm & Ranch Guide. “Each of the finalists is a winner in our minds," said Sitter. “They share a common thread of their love and passion for agriculture and their families.” As Country Woman of the Year, Koester received a blue New Holland Rustler Utility Vehicle, which was provided by the Northern Region New Holland Dealers. She also received a Medora (North Dakota) vacation package for two, sponsored by the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation. n
