The Privilege of Stewardship
STEWARDSHIP – The conducting, supervising or managing of something; especially: the careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one's care. Merriam-Webster
Merriam-Webster’s definition of stewardship outlines what it means to be a steward. As farmers and ranchers, we have many resources entrusted to our care. Probably more than any other profession, we constantly work with natural resources, accepting the responsibility to provide food today while enhancing productivity for future generations. I work as an Extension Associate in the Department of Animal Science at North Carolina State University, coordinating the Amazing Grazing program for educational outreach to pasture-based agriculture. I help producers understand the complex relationship between soil, plants and animals in their pastures. Developing this understanding takes time and is an on-going study. I like beef cattle, and therefore it is easy to focus only on the cattle, ignoring everything else. However, attention to grazing management can improve our forage production with many positive environmental impacts. Observing our grass and rotating livestock to prevent over-grazing makes us better stewards of our forage resources. Over the last five years, I have taken a broader view of pasture ecology considering my care for the soil and how it responds to different management techniques. Previously, I considered only soil chemical properties. Fertilization and lime application according to a soil analysis was the extent of my involvement with the soil. In 2012, I met NRCS soil conservationist Ray Archuleta who introduced me to soil’s physical and biological properties which, along with chemical properties, are the principal characteristics of soil health. This new view point revealed a whole new way to care for my soil. Improved grazing management benefited soil health. The excess forage that cattle trampled onto the soil surface and the deeper

root structure of rotationally grazed plants feed the soil microbiology (bacteria, protozoa, fungi, etc.). Those microbes assist plants by making soil nutrients available and building soil structure that allows air movement and water infiltration into the soil profile. With minor management changes, we can improve soil health leading to better forages and enriched cattle nutrition. As we manage our pastures, let’s manage for the livestock above ground and the “micro herd” below the soil surface to improve the entire system. My role as RAAA Treasurer and Finance Committee Chair is also stewardship. We all manage financial resources and it is an important part of our businesses. However, when the funds belong to a collective group, the level of responsibility increases. This role has evolved over my tenure from periodic reviews of RAAA’s investments to quarterly meetings providing oversite to Association funds. The input of this group is valuable to the Board and staff as we make decisions that will position our breed for future growth. The committee has been heavily involved with the headquarter relocation plan and their experience has played a major role in this endeavor. They are dedicated to responsibly stewarding RAAA resources and moving towards a bright future. We are stewards of many things. As farmers and ranchers, we have a unique perspective on stewardship because of our daily interaction with nature. We are accountable for improving the soil and its ability to capture rainfall and grow plants that nourish livestock. Those plants and our livestock provide food for God’s children. We have a major responsibility but the rewards for our labor cannot be quantified in dollars. The continual improvement of the soil, forage and animals – big and small – is something we can enjoy and share with those who will come after us. ■

Red Angus Wraps Up Fiscal Year with Success
The RAAA fiscal year runs from July 1 through June 30, so the end of our 2016-2017 business year is near. It has been a good 12-month period by just about any metric or measurement we choose to evaluate.
Red Angus advanced as a breed to an even stronger position in the U.S. beef industry. Awareness and demand for Red Angus and Red Angus-influenced cattle are at an alltime high. RAAA made progress in a number of key areas as well. The collective work of the Red Angus membership, Board of Directors and staff is paying dividends. Breed momentum is strong. We will provide final, fiscal yearend numbers on various aspects of breed advancement and Association progress during the next several months. For now, let’s make some observations that provide meaningful perspective on how we are doing as a breed: 1) Prices for Red Angus feeder calves maintained a premium position in the commercial cattle market. Red Angus females, in particular, bring large premiums across most areas of the country. Marketability has never been better in relative terms. 2) Red Angus bull prices remained strong despite the drop in the overall cattle market which has effected all breeds. 3) More Red Angus pictures have been noted in industry publications of all types, providing great PR for the breed. Articles headlining Red Angus cattle and RAAA programs are also on the rise.

The value of the tag was also quantified to add $3.38 per cwt. to the sale price of Red Angus feeder cattle and calves versus non-FCCP-tagged Red Angus feeders. 8) DNA testing, beyond that just for parent verification, continues to grow rapidly among Red Angus breeders. RAAA members are demonstrating their commitment to continued breed improvement for a host of important traits, both through the use of cutting-edge technology and a healthy dose of stockmen’s savvy. 9) Major progress on REDSPro, the Association’s database and software system (plus a lot of hard work by our Member Services Department) allowed turn-around times on work submitted to the RAAA office to improve substantially during the year. 10) RAAA maintained a sound financial position, with a strong balance sheet and positive operating results for the year.

If you have been purchasing the FCCP tag for years and plan to continue, STOP READING now! You already know the value of the tag. The amazing foresight that RAAA had in the early 1990s to identify Red Angus-sired calves has come into its own, becoming the largest identification program of its kind in the beef industry. At the end of this fiscal year (June 30), the Association will have experienced yet another record year in calf enrollments! Why is this so? You’ve seen the data on the price advantage for Red Angus-sired calves through the Superior Livestock Auction sales. It’s been in color flyers, the magazine, at bull sales, and promoted by marketing staff everywhere we go and in every speech we make. Red Angus calves earn a price advantage over Angus calves, English x Continental calves, and other English x English calves. That fact has been established. We recently learned from the same independent study that FCCP-tagged calves earn big dividends over Red Angus calves that are not tagged. The study shows FCCP-enrolled calves brought $3.38 more per cwt than calves listed as sired by Red Angus that were not enrolled in FCCP. From 2013 to 2016, 1,412 lots of beef calves representing 131,975 head were used in this analysis to quantify the effect of Red Angus age and source verification programs on the sale price of calves selling through 94 Superior Livestock Auction video sales. What did it tell us? The mean (average) base weight for the calves was 580 pounds. Extrapolating the $3.38 per cwt advantage results in a $19.60 per head advantage when the calves are enrolled in the program over those that are not. Producers have told me that they do not see a price advantage for their tagged calves when they sell. Of course, there are no guarantees in life other than death and taxes. 10 American Red Angus Magazine ■ May/June 2017
The $3.38 figure is average – some ranchers received more, some less. Other factors do affect the price; primarily lot size, flesh, NHTC status, etc. However, the evidence is clear that, on average, Red Angus calves, especially those wearing the yellow tag, are worth more. With no enrollment fee and a cost of only 99 cents per tag, your return on investment for using Red Angus genetics and using the tag equates into roughly $30 extra income per head (steer and heifer price). The message we have been sending is clear and simple. Buyers want the calves. Not because of the age and source component as much as the genetic verification of at least 50 percent Red Angus guaranteed by the FCCP-tag. As I have stated before, hide color doesn’t guarantee genetic makeup. Do not forget that the tag will also qualify your calves for Tyson’s Choice+ grid and Greater Omaha’s G.O. Red grid. Buyers of your calves need to know that, if they already do not. We continue to get great stories from those who feed out calves on the premiums they garnered from the Choice+ grid. Seriously, I hope those of you who have been using the tag read this article to the end. For those of you who have not used the tag (and are still with me!), or have used them in the past but gave up for one reason or another, please consider using them or giving them another try. We’ve switched tag companies and the type of ear tagger. The cost of the tag has remained the same for over 20 years. The Association makes NOTHING on tag sales, but the total value it provides to you, your seedstock provider and to the buyer of the calves is incalculable. Everybody wants Red Angus cattle – even if they don’t know it yet! NOW is the time. Get your tags ordered this summer or fall before the calves leave your ranch. Please order at least seven to 10 days before you need them to allow for shipping time. It will be one of the best investments you will ever make! ■

Member Services Update by Halla Pfeiff, RAAA DNA/Breed Improvement Projects Coordinator Year-End Announcements June 30 marks the end of the RAAA Fiscal Year. Please check if your RAAA member account is in good standing. All payments should be submitted for 2016-2017 THR billing, DNA submissions, ARA Magazine ads, reactivations, late transfers, etc. If accounts are not in good standing by this time they will be inactivated for lack of payment. THR Billing Changes Coming in 2017-2018 Fiscal Year Total Herd Reporting is based on the active females at 16 months of age or older on your inventory at the time of billing. The time of billing depends on the calving season of the female. For example: Spring THR is billed in July, and Fall THR is billed in December. Starting with the new fiscal year, THR fees will be billing in four installments, not five as in previous years. Also, for those members with 10 animals or less, THR will be billed in full.

Spring Inactivation, Females Missing a 2015 and 2016 record Spring inactivation’s will take place at the end of May. If any member has cows on inventory that haven’t complied with THR, it is time to catch up and report information for females that are missing a 2015 and 2016 calf record or reason code. If a record is received in the National Office before July 1, the cow will not be subject to reactivation fees. All data received does have an impact on at least one EPD. Spring inactivation contributes to the Stayability EPD. Heifer Exposure Spring 2017 Building replacement females is a concrete goal for producers. How is this achieved? Ranchers count on a higher percentage of pregnant heifers, retaining some in their own herd as replacements and selling the remainder as a cash crop. The Red Angus heifer pregnancy (HPG) EPD predicts the probability of heifers conceiving to calve at two years of age. The heifer exposure inventory enables members to submit data, which is a key factor in the Heifer Pregnancy EPD.

REDSPro Update Continued progress is being made on the REDSPro database system. A full release to the membership is not far down the road. Recent live testing of the system’s functionality represents one of the final stages before it can be accessed to the membership for daily use. Beta testers have commented favorably as they submit work directly through the REDSPro portal, completing their own registrations, transfers, weight updates etc. RAAA anticipates most of the membership will be able to process their own work with ease once they become familiar with the new system. With anticipation of the release also poses other potential opportunities as in14 American Red Angus Magazine ■ May/June 2017
Yearling Heifers 9 to 17 months of age appear on the prelisted inventory and will be entering the herd inventory and be subject to assessments in 2015. The information to report is: • Breeding season dates • Exposure information • Contemporary group designation • Disposal information (if applies) Heifer Exposure Inventory is due the second week of August. Fall 2017 Herd Inventory Your Herd Inventory is the base of THR, and a very important step that needs to be reevaluated every year for each calving season, Spring or Fall. The Fall Inventory is assessed and billed in December based on the active females in your herd or that entered your herd during the calving season. Herd inventories can be accessed online in REDSPro. Updates or changes can be submitted online or printed and a hard copy sent to the National Office. Members can also request a hard copy from the National Office. The National Office must receive Fall Herd Inventories before July 1.

Transfers Bull sale season is wrapping up and transfers need to be completed within 60 days after the sale date to avoid a late transfer fee. Please double check the buyer information for accuracy before submitting. This includes correct spelling of name(s), address, contact number, etc. If information is not correct, this can cause duplicate and/or incorrect accounts for buyers. The buyer account number is very beneficial to ensure a buyer’s inventory is complete, so that the Red Angus Feed Calf Certification Program and Allied Access tagging programs can be used to the fullest. If buyers have purchased Red Angus previously, feel free to contact the National Office for the buyer account number to help with this process. Members can also view previously transferred animals and buyer information through REDSPro (Herd Management, My Reports, “Transferred Animals - No Group Required”). Red Navigator Have you considered using the commercial female DNA test for selection and culling decisions this breeding season? The Red Navigator test is a specialized test used to

develop a set of EPDs for percentile rank for each individual animal submitted for each EPD trait offered by the RAAA. The results include parent verification if the sire’s or dam’s DNA profile is on file with RAAA. The test is recommended for females that are of 75 percent Red Angus or higher. Contact Halla at the National Office (940-387-3502 ext. 10 or halla@redangus.org) for more information or to order your DNA testing kits. 2017 Breeding Season DNA Requirements Don’t forget that all sires (AI and Natural) are required to be parent verified through DNA so their progeny can be registered. Contact the National Office to request sample collection kits for blood or hair. When submitting samples back to RAAA for processing, make sure that the order form is completed (Parentage test marked, signature and registration number of the tested animal). The Red Angus Foundation, Inc. is a dynamic, tax-deductible organization supporting juniors, education and research for Red Angus stakeholders. It was first established in the mid-1990s, and its mission and scope was expanded in 2010 by the Red Angus Association of America. Ranchers and industry partners are working to ensure the Red Angus breed’s future and enhance its position within the beef industry while developing tomorrow’s industry leaders. To achieve this requires top-of-the-line, peer-reviewed science and technology, as well as continued education and communication. These efforts all require financial sustainability.

The General Fund is a non-restricted fund; disbursements from this fund may be used for any purpose which the RAFI Board of Directors deems important in advancing the Red Angus breed.

2017 Junior Red Angus Scholarship Winners
The RAAA Junior Activities Committee recently named the winners of this year’s $1,000 scholarships. Anna Behrens of Norwich, Kansas, is the daughter of Bryan and Vonda Behrens. She graduated from Norwich High School and will attend Kansas State University this fall, majoring in animal science. After college she plans to attend medical school and study pediatrics. She carried a 4.0 GPA in high school and was active in National Honor Society, FCA, volleyball and basketball. She served many leadership roles through 4-H and was active on judging teams. She owns a small herd of registered Red Angus cattle and currently is the president of the Kansas Junior Red Angus Association. She volunteers at a Wichita hospital and organizes and participates in community projects. Amanda Fox of Junction City, Oregon, is the daughter of Greg and Tammy Fox. She graduated from Junction City High School where she participated in basketball, cross country and track. She enjoys mentoring youth and was a youth facilitator for the Junction City Summer Bridge Program, teaching freshmen good decision-making skills, and she coached at girls’ basketball camps. Amanda plans to study animal science at Oregon State University and continue on to OSU’s College of Veterinary Medicine. Owning and breeding registered Red Angus cattle sparked her interest in theriogenology, a specialization of
veterinary medicine in reproduction. She wants to own a mobile practice for large and small animals, and continue to raise cattle.
Riley Haun of Homedale, Idaho, is the daughter of Kelly and Bill Haun. She is a member of JRA and regional Red Angus organizations, and actively cares for and manages a herd of about 25 registered Red Angus cattle on her family's farm. She shows both locally and regionally. This year she graduated from Homedale High School, where she served as the president of her local FFA chapter, reporter of the Boise Valley FFA District, and president of the local National Honor Society chapter. She plans to attend the University of Idaho and major in agricultural communications, with a minor in political science. Her goal is to become a lobbyist and a force of positive change in the representation of agriculture and the beef industry. Ty Montgomery of Coats, Kansas, is the son of Kenny and Lori Montgomery. He graduated from Skyline High School where he played football. He was also active in Boy Scouts, holding the highest rank of Eagle Scout, and is an 11-year member of Glendale Reapers 4-H Club. He plans to attend either Kansas State or Oklahoma State University majoring in biochemistry or biotechnology with a focused research emphasis in beef genetics. Red Angus became his breed of choice in 2008 with the purchase of his first show heifer. He built his small herd with ideal conformation traits and balanced EPD profiles, and sells bulls and heifers locally. Ty exhibits his animals in national shows and has

made numerous friends all over the country. Genna VanWye of Atlanta, Illinois, is the daughter of Jerry and Connie VanWye. She attends Iowa State University, studying animal science. At ISU she is involved in Block and Bridle and Collegiate Beef Team, and is an Ambassador for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. She was raised on a registered Red Angus and commercial operation. Upon receiving her bachelor’s degree in animal science, she plans on attending veterinary school at ISU or University of Missouri, with a career goal in embryology and other reproduction practices in the beef and dairy industries. The opportunities she has taken in the Red Angus breed have aided her in finding her passions within the beef industry. The committee also awarded the $500 Dee Sonstegard Memorial Scholarship. Megan Banwarth of Adin, California, is the daughter of Kevin and Katherine Banwarth. She attends California State University Chico with a major in animal science. She is involved in Young California Cattlemen's Association, Lassen, Butte and Modoc County Farm Bureaus and the Pre-Veterinary Interest Group. She is also working towards her FFA American Degree. Red Angus has had a profound role in her career goals. She started showing Red Angus at the age of 8 and has loved everything about it. She has not only learned about cattle, but has met some wonderful people along the way. She still continues to breed, market and show cattle at various shows and sales throughout the west.

How Much Does CED Influence the HerdBuilder Index? by Larry Keenan, Director of Breed Improvement
Occasionally, Directors and staff hear comments regarding EPDs that aren’t quite accurate. RAAA is committed to objectively describing cattle and utilizing economically sound, scientific principles in genetic evaluations. Therefore, it is important to debunk myths or misnomers so our membership and stakeholders are accurately informed. HerdBuilder Myth: “Bulls must have a high CED EPD in order to have a favorable HerdBuilder index value.”
Fact: The calculation of Red Angus’ HerdBuilder index does include the Calving Ease Direct (CED) EPD, as well as 10 other traits. Compared to all traits included in HerdBuilder, CED is the third-most-influential trait. Therefore, CED does effect HerdBuilder, but how much impact does it carry? One simple way to determine the level of influence is to completely remove CED from the HerdBuilder calculation and assess the correlation between the currently published HerdBuilder versus HerdBuilder without CED on a group of high-accuracy Red Angus sires. Recall, correlations measure the relationship between two values on a group of animals and range from -1 to +1 (-1 = complete disagreement and +1 = complete agreement).

Using the Red Angus Sire Summary sires (actively used sires with a WW accuracy of 0.50 or higher) this correlation was calculated as +0.97. This tells us that if we were to completely remove CED from the calculation of HerdBuilder, the overall impact would be very minimal. Therefore, while CED is included in the calculation, it certainly isn’t the main driver of HerdBuilder. A perfect example of a bull that’s very favorable for HerdBuilder (top 10 percent), yet very unfavorable for CED (bottom 5 percent) is HXC Big Iron 0024X (Reg. #1378526). How does that happen? The answer is, “Growth.” Big Iron’s WW EPD ranks in the top 2 percent of the breed and his YW EPD ranks in the top 1 percent of the breed. Using our prior-described strategy for assessing a trait’s impact on HerdBuilder, the impact of growth on HerdBuilder was evaluated. The findings show the correlation between the currently published HerdBuilder versus HerdBuilder without growth was calculated as +0.93. The combination of these two exercises reveals that growth, rather than calving ease, has a greater impact on the calculation of HerdBuilder. Myth busted. ■

With spring calving season fresh in our minds, marketing might not seem like a top priority. That crucial yearly task, however, is just around the corner, and early preparation will help ensure success.
The markets have rebounded nicely and we are enjoying an improved optimistic outlook. Unfortunately, we don’t know what the next three quarters of the year will bring, so it’s wise to anticipate change. The variety of value-added programs can be overwhelming for producers as they seek the program that best fits their operation and offers the highest return on investment. Before investing in a program, ranchers should also consider what their buyers require and which programs are driving the highest premiums. While that may be a moving target in a less-than-steady market, our customers and consumers are requiring more information on the products they purchase. Program Options Ranchers have many options to consider as they sift through the different value-added programs. As long as export markets are open and our consumers have free choice of the food they eat, the demand for programs such as Natural, NHTC and GAP will remain strong. However, our producers are challenged to outguess the fluctuation in paid premiums for these programs, since they are based on hard-to-predict supply and demand. Cattlemen must decide if it makes sense to verify their cattle under one of these consumer-driven programs such as certified All Natural, NHTC or GAP, where third-party-verification companies provide accreditations such as IMI Global. The alternative option is to strive for as many pounds as possible by using tools such as implants and ionophores which will add pay weight, but will disqualify them for programs such as All Natural and NHTC certifications. Ensure Performance and Quality Regardless of our export markets or customer-driven demand, feedyards deal with profit or loss factors. The two biggest hurdles that affect the bottom line for feedyards are performance and quality as determined by genetics and 26 American Red Angus Magazine ■ May/June 2017

health. Improved herd health can easily be achieved by vaccination protocols and herd management practices. Genetic advancements require more time and planning. Value-added programs reward producers for excellent health protocols and top genetics. Programs such as VAC Certification (i.e. VAC35 or VAC45) recognize producers’ efforts to maintain healthy cattle. Genetic-verification programs, such as Top Dollar Angus, reward high-growth, high-carcass-merit cattle. If a pen of cattle fails to grade and perform based on their genetics and they have a high percentage of morbidity and mortality, they lose money regardless of whatever value-added program they are certified under. Don’t let your cattle or reputation be one of these statistics. Reduce Risk by Verifying Genetics Top Dollar Angus is helping our nation’s feedyards obtain necessary genetic verification and assisting retailers to meet the high-quality red meat demand of our consumers. Genetic certification is becoming a must-have amongst our industry because cattle feeders can’t afford unknown and unpredictable feeder cattle. They are tired of the huge swings in value and performance from pen to pen in uncertified cattle. When Top Dollar Angus certifies a producer’s herd, feedyards know the risk has been reduced on that set of cattle since carcass quality and performance are confirmed through genetic verification. I challenge our nation’s producers to take advantage of every opportunity that arises to help your operation succeed. Sometimes what has been the norm may not be the best operating procedure moving forward. If you are interested in certifying the genetics of your cattle and upping your marketing strategy, let’s begin the process to capitalize on Top Dollar Angus’ value-added program. You will need to be ready to pull the trigger when the marketing opportunity arises, so let’s be ready by qualifying your herd today. Qualify for Top Dollar Angus
1) Contact Top Dollar Angus at 720-925-5906 or kenny@topdollarangus.com 2) Two ways to qualify: a) Send us your breeding sire history. Your initial herd qualification requires you to submit a minimum of four years (preferably five or six) of records that include all natural service and/or AI sires used. b) If you have used non-registered bulls or do not have the needed records, your herd can qualify on DNA. Submit DNA samples on a percentage of your calf crop (percentage set by TDA representative) to confirm your herd’s genetic makeup. 3) Top Dollar Angus will then evaluate your herd’s genetics by using either the submitted sire data or DNA to determine your qualification status. We are looking for those herds whose genetics rank in the top 25 percent of their breed, focusing on percent ranking in carcass and growth values. 4) Once your herd has qualified, Top Dollar Angus becomes your marketing agent. Our customers choose their sale venue and then Top Dollar Angus goes to work to promote and drive demand for your high-end-genetic feeder cattle. The ultimate goal is to acquire the highest premiums possible above the average market for the region on the week our customers’ cattle sell.

Stewardship – Settrini Style by Trinity Lewis for American Red Angus Magazine
An agriculturist in the beautiful foothills of California’s Salinas Valley is taking stewardship to a whole new level. Celeste Settrini says that she doesn’t believe there are enough people sharing the story of agriculture. She feels blessed with a passion for visiting with people and chooses to employ her abilities by telling the story of production agriculture, namely beef production. The Settrini family has a rich heritage in the Salinas Valley where great-grandfather Serafino Settrini homesteaded after immigrating from Switzerland over 100 years ago.

Settrini was raised on the ranch her great-grandfather homesteaded after migrating to America from Switzerland. It was just after the turn of the century when Serafino Settrini began a dairy, like many of the Swiss immigrants of that time. When the dairy industry was essentially overrun by regulations – only a few decades after the founding of the ranch – the Settrini family knew they couldn’t afford to make the upgrades to conform to the on-coming requirements. They adapted to the changes by selling their dairy herd and becoming beef cattle producers. Serafino’s three sons, Celeste’s grandfather and his two brothers, were very particular in their husbandry and genetic selec-
tions, and were known for having the highest quality beef in the valley. The ranch is now over 100 years old and is managed by Celeste, her brother John, and their mother Anita. The trio still value quality and manage their now Red Angus operation in a way that honors those who have gone before them while celebrating all involved in today’s ag industry. A Passion to Share In a state that could easily feed the entire nation, it may be assumed that California has an abundance of ag advocates. But, as with the nation, many in the state are very unfamiliar with the inner workings of the cattle industry. That’s an issue Celeste Settrini tirelessly addresses.

“I am passionate about sharing the story of agriculture – not only our ranch but of fellow ranchers – and celebrating the good things that we all do within this industry,” explained Settrini. “I feel that it is important to talk about what we do in a truthful and transparent manner.”

Stewardship – Settrini Style Settrini uses her deep-rooted passion for agriculture to reach out through social media, blog platforms and advocacy and leadership groups to communicate and build relationships with consumers. She is also a polished speaker having presented at a variety of venues advocating for American agriculture. Along with life on the ranch, Settrini is a co-owner in CS Connections, an agriculture marketing business. Settrini is a great connector of people and has contacts throughout the U.S., but that does not keep her away from the inner workings at the ranch. “I am involved in the day-to-day operation – from the not-so-glamorous jobs like fixing fence to the exciting jobs of marketing the calves and bull selection. Everything in between takes up my daily activities on the ranch.” Red Rewards The Settrini Ranch is home to a productive herd of Red Angus females. Settrini stated that her father made the switch to the breed after the marketability of Herefords was on the decline. “The Red Angus breed is a nice cross with other breeds and the mamas are just second to none,” she said. “We are enrolled in the Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program and we have had consistent buyers on the video that are interested in these Red Angus calves. We found a breed that will really work for our type of hill country. They are docile, raise great carcass calves and market well,” she said. For the past 20 years, the Settrinis have experienced success marketing their calves via video auction through Western Video Market. Legacy of Stewardship Settrini gives her parents credit for the person she is and the professions she has chosen. Her father passed away recently but she carries on his legacy. “My dad taught my brother and me

about a lot of things – cattle ranching being a small part. But above and beyond that, being responsible, good people. To be proud of the product we were raising and to never be afraid to share with our consumers how we raise our beef. Without consumers, we would not be in business. I consider myself to be very blessed by all my dad instilled in me.” She has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors including Woman of the Year by Ag Against Hunger. Most recently, she was named Beef Promoter of the Year by the American National Cattlewomen Association as well as the coveted Cattlewoman of the Year by her county. In her opinion, Settrini thinks being genuine is key when producers are sharing their story with the public. “I think it is really important to just be real, talk about what you do and share,” she said. “Don’t try to be anyone but who you are. The experiences that you have lived on your ranch make you an expert in those experiences, giving you the creditability to talk about your operation.” In an era in agriculture where nearly all practices have push-back from an ill-informed public, it is imperative that ranchers take a break from ranch work and make a point of visiting with their

communities to share the catalyst for good that is American agriculture. “Anymore, ranching is not all about working with the cows. Today it includes sharing our information with consumers so they can make meaningful choices regarding the type of beef they want to buy and support. Ranching is now a profession that is a part of the bigger picture and transparency from ranch to table and everything in between is important,” said Settrini. “This is another reason I love it. I love talking with consumers and sharing what I enjoy – what makes me tick – and why I continue ranching. I enjoy not only representing my ranch, but all the ranchers that might not feel as comfortable sharing their story of the good, beneficial things we do for our environment, for our businesses and for our communities,” she said. Ranchers were the first stewards of natural resources, understanding that if they take care of the environment, the land would take care of them. In modern American agriculture, stewardship is no longer only caring for the land and maintaining a healthy livestock herd. Stewardship is sharing with consumers the story of agriculturists’ daily responsibility to care for their animals and environment while feeding an ever-growing world population. ■

Red Angus Leader Darrell Schuler Remembered, Celebrated by Tracey Koester, ARA Editorial Coordinator In a time before internet and email, cell phones and instant communication, Darrell Schuler traveled the extra mile to maintain operations of the Red Angus Association of America during his term as president.
Darrell and his wife Mary Lou began raising Red Angus seedstock in 1976, and Darrell was elected to the RAAA Board of Directors in 1981. His presidency started with a business situation that challenged the survival of the young breed association. “When Dad became president in 1986, the Association – due to various issues and not unlike many of the ranchers in the 1980s – was essentially broke,” recalled Darrell’s son Butch. “So broke, in fact, that the soon-to-be ex-executive secretary was paying operating bills on the Association’s behalf with a credit card carrying an outstanding balance.” Darrell started his RAAA presidency without an executive secretary and with an outstanding debt nearing $190,000 according to The History of Red Angus. Because of the severe situation, the executive secretary’s chair remained vacant for four years and nonessential staff were let go. Betty Grimshaw, longtime RAAA employee, returned to the position of acting executive secretary, and she and Darrell split the responsibilities of the post.

RAAA 2010 Pioneer Breeder of the Year “Darrell would drive or fly from Nebraska to Texas each month to handle Association business,” remembered Betty. “He knew we had to turn the Association around financially and he decided the best thing to do was to come down to the office.” With the help of RAAA First Vice President Bill Callahan, Darrell secured a $70,000 line of credit to cover accounts payable. “Even though our ranch had its own operating loans and land payments to service, Dad was so committed to the breed, he volunteered to use the ranch as collateral for a personal bank note on the Association’s behalf,” said Butch. “With Mom’s blessing this was done so the Association could keep operating.” “Nobody even knew all the things he did because he didn’t want recognition,” said Betty. “He wouldn’t accept reimbursement for his traveling expenses and he was very unselfish. He didn’t do it for the glory but instead for the good of the breed.” By the end of his presidency, RAAA was financially sound. As a token of appreciation, RAAA presented Darrell with the Distinguished Service Award in 1988. Darrell and his family were honored with other prestigious RAAA awards: Breeder of the Year (1996), one of the Breed’s 50Most-Influential People (2004), and Pioneer Breeder of the Year (2010). The family ranch was also honored as BIF’s Seed Stock Producer of the Year in 2014. Ron Bieber of Leola, South Dakota, said,

Darrell Schuler, 77, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in Bridgeport, Nebraska, on April 27, 2017. Darrell was born Sept. 12, 1939, in Russell, Kansas, the son of Chester Bernard and Fern Loree (Razak) Schuler. He graduated high school in Kimball where he met his future wife Mary Louise Olsen. After attending college in Billings, Montana, and Fort Collins, Colorado, he married Mary Lou on Nov. 10, 1959, and moved to the ranch near Bridgeport where he lived until his death. Darrell was a member of the Panhandle Shrine Club and the Sesostris Shrine. He was a 50-plus-year member of Camp Clarke #285 Masonic Lodge where he held numerous offices including Worshipful Master. He also was an Associate Guardian of Job’s Bethel #22 Bridgeport. Darrell is survived by his daughter Lori and husband Frank Nerud of Bayard, their daughter Rachel of Alliance; son Darrell “Butch” Schuler and wife Susan of Bridgeport, their children Stephanie and David of Lincoln; and his nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mary Lou, brother Terry and grandson Dylan Nerud.
“Darrell was an industry leader and an encouragement to anyone interested in Red Angus. His Christian leadership was unselfish. Of course, he loved a good joke or pulling a prank and, if you saw that big grin on his face, you knew he was up to something.” Melvin Leland of Sidney, Montana, said, “Darrell was a people person who enjoyed socializing. He had a good sense of humor and, even on serious issues, he could find the lighter side.” “He had the natural ability to inspire people to do better,” concluded Bieber. “He was very generous.” n

The Nominating Committee encourages interested members to consider running for those seats that are up for re-election or will be vacated due to term limits. A term is three years with a two-term limit. Directors are elected to the volunteer leadership position in their respective Area or Regional Caucuses during the general session of the convention. Throughout her life, Miriam was involved in many activities and hobbies and was very passionate about everything she did. She was very involved in her sons' school activities and never missed any of their sporting events. She enjoyed bird hunting and raising bird dogs with her boys. Miriam and Winston raised Red Angus cattle for many years, and Miriam served as vice president of
the Red Angus Association of America and president of the Southeast Red Angus Association. She also served as the president of Covington County Quilt Guild Association, president of Montgomery Booster Club Association (Hooper Academy) and vice president of Montgomery Board of Trustees (Hooper Academy). Miriam loved quilting and won many awards for her quilts. She raised daylilies and was very proud to have one named after her. Miriam excelled in her career moving up from an administrative assistant to Human Resource Manager for American States Insurance and claims adjuster for several insurance companies in the Montgomery area, including American States Insurance and Cigna Insurance.
Miriam loved the Lord and was an active member of the Buck Creek Baptist Church serving as chairman of the Vision Team. She dearly loved her Women’s Sunday School class and cherished every moment with them. Even with all of these accomplishments, she was most proud of her family, especially her four grandchildren, Nathan, Haley, Morgan and Kendall. She is survived by her husband, Lewis Winston Foshee of Red Level; sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Kelly Foshee of Huntsville, Alabama; and Robin and Edna Foshee of Trussville, Alabama; four grandchildren, Nathan (Katie) Foshee, Haley (Justin) Griggs, Morgan Foshee and Kendall Foshee; one great grandchild, Austin Griggs; and sister and

brother-in-law, Norma and J.W. Williamson of Andalusia. She is preceded in death by her parents, Charles Oglesby and Jewel Bodie Burge, and brother Charles Oglesby Burge, III. James L. Gilroy James L. “Jim” Gilroy, age 88 of Dalton, Nebraska, passed away at Highland Park Care Center in Alliance, Nebraska, on March 22, 2017. He was buried with military honors. Jim, the son of Francis Herbert and
Ruth Hazel (Lane) Gilroy, was born December 6, 1928, in Denver, Colorado. He attended school in Denver and graduated from Denver High School. After graduation he worked as a messenger boy for the Union Pacific Railroad in Denver. He then came to Dalton to assist with his grandparents’ farming operation. He served in the Korean War with the U.S. Army. He met the love of his life, Rose Ann Bivens, and married in 1956. His lifelong passion was ranching and farming. Survivors include his wife, Rose Ann of Dalton; daughter, Donna (Calvin) Griess of Sutton; son, Daniel of Alliance, and two grandsons, Todd and

Paul Gilroy of Alliance; and numerous extended family members and friends.
