VOLUME 53, NUMBER 4
APRIL 2017
HERD STAYABILITY Beckton is the #1 Herd in the breed for Stayability, and has been for many years. 42 of the top 50 sires in the breed for Stayability EPD are Beckton sires or descended from Beckton sires including 15 of the top 20. High reproduction rate and cattle that work for their owners, rather than the other way around. These are the cattle that stay in your herd. LOW MAINTENANCE ENERGY This has also been the #1 Herd for Low Maintenance Energy requirements for many years. 6 of the top 20 sires in the entire breed for lowest Maintenance Energy EPD are Beckton sires. No other cattle will do a better job cutting you cowherd feed requirements and saving you money. EASY CALVING The #1 Herd for easy calving, with the best average Calving Ease EPD of any major herd. 10 of the top 20 sires in the breed for low Birth Weight EPD are Beckton sires. No other genetics come close. GROWTH from Birth to Market Beckton bulls are leaders in total rate of growth, from birth to market weight. The average birth weight EPD of our sale bulls last year was minus -4.0, and the average yearling weight EPD is plus +80. Beckton cattle start with low birth weight and reach a high market (yearling) weight quickly – for quicker marketability and less cost to market.
The new HERD-BUILDER Index recently developed and implemented by the Red Angus Association combines economically relevant EPD’s (maternal, growth and carcass traits as well as fertility), and weights each EPD for its contribution to overall herd profitability. Designed for commercial producers retaining replacement heifers, this single index measure compares and ranks all Red Angus sires in the breed, to provide a single measure of expected profitability for every sire compared to all other Red Angus sires. 41 of the 50 highest ranking sires on the Red Angus Herd Builder Index are Beckton sires or descended from Beckton sires, including 16 of the top 20. In our annual bull sale on Tuesday, April 11, most of the 250 bulls and 50 heifers selling will rank in the top 10% of Red Angus breed. Many of the bulls in the sale will be in the top 1 or 2% of the breed, with an expected profitability gain over $15,000. Even the average bull in our sale will have an expected profitability gain of more than $10,000 compared to the average non-Beckton Red Angus bull. For more information about the Herd Builder Index, please contact either us or the Red Angus Association.

Don’t Mess Up My Cowherd! One thing my dad always said was, “It takes a great cow to produce great bulls!” And he couldn’t have been more right!
Luckily, whether you are a commercial producer or a registered breeder, you have chosen Red Angus to take your cowherd forward and Red Angus is very well known for great females. Several years ago at the Montana Stockgrowers Association convention, the Montana Red Angus Association sponsored a commercial cattleman’s symposium. At this symposium we had a panel discussion with various panelists from around the cattle business. One of our panelists was J.D. Radakovich from the Hoodoo Ranch in Wyoming that uses Red Angus bulls in their crossbreeding program. When asked what advice he would give his bull suppliers, J.D. simply said, “Don’t screw up my cowherd!” That seems like a fairly simple answer. I have thought long and hard about that simple five-word response ever since. As a seedstock producer, I hold much of my customers’ future in my hands. How so? If I sell them a bad bull, the repercussions could go on for many years. Let’s look at this in more detail. Our breeding decisions this spring will result in a calf crop in 2018. The resulting bull calves will grow up and, hopefully, be sold as breeding bulls in 2019. Those bulls will go out into commercial herds across the country servicing cows and producing calf crops for three to five years. This means those calves will be born between 2020 and 2024.
6 American Red Angus Magazine ■ April 2017
The heifer calf portion of those calf crops will be what the individual cattle producers will use to choose their replacements. That first set of replacement heifers out of the bulls purchased in 2019 will have their first calf in 2022 and, hopefully, will continue having calves for eight or more years until 2030. The last set of offspring from those bulls will potentially still be having calves in 2034. Now to compound the situation, replacement heifers from the second generation (and third, fourth, fifth, etc.) will also affect the producer’s herd. Kind of makes this year’s breeding decisions weigh pretty heavy on your mind! There are several EPDs to help us in making sure we are doing the right thing when it comes to producing quality bull and heifer calves, but there are also several other things to watch. How about foot and leg structure, and udder quality? If a cow has poor feet, it will affect how long she is able to stay in the herd and produce. It is also highly heritable which means her offspring may also have poor feet. This is detrimental for all segments of the cattle industry, from seedstock to commercial to feed yards. Udder quality and docility are other highly heritable traits that could either positively or negatively affect the producer’s herd. Producing a great cowherd takes a lot of time and effort and a delicate balancing act involving trying to keep all of these traits in check. Red Angus producers all over the nation have done an excellent job of making Red Angus THE preferred female in the industry! ■

Red Angus Has a Growing Presence in the Beef AI Business
The spring breeding season will soon be in full swing. Ranchers will synchronize heifers and put their wellplanned mating decisions into action.
Older herd bulls will be checked and readied for another year, while newly purchased bulls are designated with a spot in the line-up for their first season of service.
Angus calves will be AI-sired or the result of ET. More Red Angus breeders are finding it advantageous to employ these reproductive tools, presumably because it gives them more opportunity and more control over the genetic outcomes in their calf crops.
AI lets the breeder choose from hundreds of available sires, many of which are highly-proven for the important It is exciting to think about what those traits of interest (like calving ease on genetic and management decisions heifers). Association Commentary Here is another interesting trend that speaks to the growing influence of Red Angus genetics within the U.S. beef industry in general, and in AI circles specifically. Way back in 1978, the largest beef AI company cataloged only four Red Angus bulls in their annual sire directory. Those four sires represented just 3.2 pecent of all sires listed that year. Other breeds made up the remaining 96.8 percent. Twenty years later in 1998, Red Angus accounted for 10.8 percent of all sires cataloged by that same company. In their 2017 sire directory, 21 Red Angus sires are pictured and promoted, which is 17.4 percent of total beef sires of all breeds. Such steady growth is encouraging, and approaching an influential level of critical mass is important too. Where will Red Angus be in another five years? That’s difficult to project, but there should be nothing to stop this growth trend. More large-scale, commercial heifer AI projects now involve Red Angus sires. Add to that growth in registered Red Angus herds and positive trends in both AI and ET usage, and the Red Angus breed’s presence in the beef AI business should continue to rise.
We can also factually say that more Red Angus-sired calves will be born this year on U.S. soil than ever before in history. That is true for both registered and commercial herds. Red Angus and Red Angus-influenced calves have been hitting the ground in record numbers during the past several months, and will continue to do so throughout the remainder of 2017. Now that’s a positive trend we’d like to see continue! ■

Marketing Update by Katie Ochsner, Commercial Marketing Specialist
Marketing – A Year ’Round Effort
Spring is the busiest time of the year for many ranching operations. Between wrapping up spring calving season, attending bull sales, prepping for branding and planning for breeding season, there doesn’t seem to be much time for anything else! But those involved in the cattle business know that if there’s something to be done you get it done, regardless if there seems to be the time or not! Even while those calves are just hitting the ground and we’re focused on keeping them healthy through the first days of their lives, the progressive cattleman also has in the back of his or her mind the end-point for that calf and their influence on the bottom line of the operation. This in mind, many ranchers chose to tag their new babies with a Feeder Calf Certification Program ‘yellow tag.’ If the calves are sired by registered Red Angus bulls, the yellow tag verifies that the calves are at least 50 percent Red Angus bloodlines and, also provides age and source verification. Alternatively, if you’ve used HybRED bulls, you may purchase Allied Access tags, which have the same age and source verification benefits of the FCCP tags without the 50 percent Red Angus bloodlines requirement. Both tags are affordable, user friendly and customizable. Order customized, pre-printed tags to save time and make your life easier during calving season. We all know time is a hot commodity during this busy season! If you haven’t yet ordered your FCCP or AA tags for this year’s calf crop, it’s not too late! To increase the profitability of those calves this fall, order your tags and apply them any time between now and when those cattle ship.
Once we’ve survived calving season, next on the docket is breeding season. The preparation for breeding season begins long before the first day of AIing, or putting the bulls out to pasture. I believe the popular adage, “Failing to plan is planning to fail,” is very applicable to our breeding decisions. Producers put much time and thought into their bull selection, as evidenced by the bull buyers I’ve seen flipping tirelessly through bull sale catalogs and showing up weeks ahead of a sale to have a look and narrow down their short list. Bull selection is very important, but the bull is only half of the story. We can’t neglect the female!
14 American Red Angus Magazine ■ April 2017
In my experience, bull buyers put a lot of stock into the figures associated with the bulls they chose. However, it’s often forgotten that the commercial females to be mated to those bulls have an entire genetic profile behind them that can also be used in mating decisions. In the past, the numbers hidden in the DNA of commercial females have gone undiscovered, but there are now tools available to help the commercial producers plan on both sides of the mating equation. RAAA’s commercial DNA test, Red Navigator, provides invaluable genetic information on commercial females. Producers who order the Red Navigator test will receive data in the form of a percentile rank for all 13 EPDs, as well as the HerdBuilder and GridMaster indices, on each female tested. Using the data provided by Red Navigator, the commercial producer can match those carefully selected bulls to the commercial females that they will best complement, and make next year’s calf crop the best yet! Even during this busy time when most of us are just trying to keep our heads above water, those who wish to stay ahead of the curve must not neglect going the extra mile to produce high-quality cattle that command the best market value. Utilizing value-added programs such as FCCP and genetic tools like Red Navigator can help us reach this goal! Visit www.redangus.org or call 940-387-3502 to enroll in FCCP or order Red Navigator test kits.

FCCP and Allied Access program participants will begin receiving Allflex USA, Inc. tags upon program enrollment as the current inventory of tags is depleted. “We are excited about our new partnership with Allflex and believe that cattlemen around the country will find that the Allflex “FCCP” tag will meet their demands for ease of use and the ever-important tag retention,” said Chessie Mitchell, RAAA tag program coordinator. “Allflex has a long unwavering commitment to provide products and expertise for specialty identification programs in North America and we look forward to working with the Red Angus Association of America,” remarked Donna James-Tejes, commercial services manager for Allflex USA, Inc. “We are pleased to provide the products, logistics and official protocols to meet the needs of their members.” The FCCP program — while well established and recognized in the industry — is currently enjoying record growth. Research has shown that calves positively identified in the marketplace as Red Angus genetics consistently sell for a premium over other breeds. January and February 2017 were record-setting months for calf enrollments into the program. More commercial beef producers are utilizing Red Angus bulls to efficiently produce high-quality beef and using the FCCP tag to identify their genetics. “February calf enrollments topped 36,700 head, the largest, single-month enrollment in the history of the program with year-to-date enrollments of 113,800 head,” said Mitchell. “This is exciting news and year-todate calf enrollments are 15 percent above a year ago.” “The Allflex partnership will allow us to continue to provide responsive customer service to cattlemen participating in FCCP as we continue to experience growth in the program,” she said. The FCCP program is free to enroll and the only cost is the 99-cent dangle tag or $3 EID-dangle tag combination. ■ 16 American Red Angus Magazine ■ April 2017

Member Services Update by Halla Pfeiff, RAAA DNA/Breed Improvement Projects Coordinator International identification Letter The international animal identification letter for 2017 is ‘E.’ Many find this beneficial for tag and identification numbers, i.e. animal ID. How, and even if the letter is used, depends upon the ranch’s preferred style. One suggestion would be to place in front of the ID number to identify bull calf, ex: E101, or if it’s a heifer calf to place the letter behind the number ex: 101E. To view a list of other year letters go to redangus.org/registration. The first step of complying with Total Herd Reporting (THR) Each cow on active inventory (16 month of age and older) should report one of the three for each calving season. 1) calf record 2) reason code for the dam or 3) disposal code for the dam. Calving Season for Spring: January 1 – June 30. Calving Season for Fall: July 1 – December 31. Fall 2016 Weaning Worksheets Postcards were sent out in March as a reminder that it is time to report data on Fall 2016-born calves. The weaning worksheets may be requested hard copy to report data or a hard copy can be printed from REDSPro by the member. Data may also be reported via REDsPro. To ensure data is included in the next National Cattle Evaluation, report by May 8 via paper or May 15 electronically. Spring 2015 and 2016 THR Data Request – No Progeny Report Reminder postcards were sent out midMarch. To fulfill THR requirements and avoid possible female reactivation fees, please report a calf record with weaning data or reason code for the cow on Spring 2015 and 2016 cows on inventory. Members can report data via REDSPro, a print printed report can be generated out of REDSPro by the member, or a
hard copy report upon request by contacting the National Office. To avoid inactivation, report data to RAAA by April 14. If non-compliance of the No Progeny Report occurs then females will be subject to inactivation. The inactivation process will occur May 29. Proper emails to send data processing requests When submitting information to the office, please utilize the following email addresses for efficient handling of your request. Registrations & Corrections: web.rrts@redangus.org Transfers: web.transfer@redangus.org Herd Inventory Reports: web.herdinv@redangus.org Heifer Exposure Reports: web.hfrexp@redangus.org Summer NCE Deadline Performance data must be received in the national office by May 9 for paper submissions and May 16 electronic submissions to be included in the Summer National Cattle Evaluation.

The reservation number is critical. 5) Once you have completed your animals’ updated information, return it to the correct email, (listed above) and in the subject line include “Reservation job #000000.” The submitted data will then be placed into the initial reservation file to be pulled in date-received order for processing. Patsy Krause joins Red Angus Foundation, Inc. by Beth Gaines, RAAA Communications Coordinator Working to grow the base of financial, research and educational support for the Red Angus breed has long been the charge of the Red Angus Foundation, Inc. RAFI, a 501(c)(3) organization, was started in 2010. In pursuing that mission, the RAFI Board of Directors recently secured the halftime services of Patsy Krause who will work to grow the Foundation's financial resources and further expand its reach and impact. Raymond Prescott of Gray Court, South Carolina, was elected President of the RAFI Board at the annual meeting held in Denver during the National Western Stock Show this past January. “We are very excited to have someone with Patsy's qualifications and experience working with us to make the Red Angus breed stronger in the beef cattle industry in the future.”
Krause will work from her home office near Glasgow, Montana. Raised on her family’s ranch that now currently raises commercial Red Angus, she brings firsthand knowledge of the tradition and heritage of the beef industry. Prior to joining RAFI, she worked in the healthcare industry for two decades focusing on marketing and fundraising. “I recognize the beauty of people and the passions they have for their legacy. I look forward to getting out and meeting the farmers and ranchers that raise Red Angus cattle,” said Krause. “RAFI has great opportunities to support the growth and future of the Red Angus breed through targeted research projects, educational efforts and junior leadership programs.” In addition to Prescott, RAFI board members include Ryan Ludvigson of Billings, Montana; Frank Wedel of Leoti, Kansas; Steve Newberry of Livingston, Montana;

Blake Angell of Ellis, Kansas; Bob Hough of Lone Tree, Colorado; and Scott Ford of Bertrand, Nebraska. Krause may be reached by phone at 406599-2852 or email at patsy@redangus.org.
Red Angus Foundation, Inc. exists to enhance the Red Angus breed’s position within the beef industry and help secure long-term sustainable breed growth. Achievement of this purpose requires the development of tomorrow’s industry leaders, harnessing the best peer-reviewed science and technology, and seeking opportunities to improve education and communication among Red Angus stakeholders.

JRA Update
Be InspiRED to Lead at Round-Up! Round-Up will be held in South Dakota and Iowa June 28 to July 2, 2017. Juniors can be excited for some very interesting stops and competitions this year! South Dakota and Iowa have some great stops in store for Round-Up participants! From South Dakota State University’s Animal Science Department, to Trans Ova, to the Opportunities Farm, JRA members will be exposed to multiple areas of the beef industry, as well as other sectors of agriculture that are doing their part in being efficient, sustainable agriculturists. JRA members will also be hearing from Holly Hoffman, Survivor Nicaragua’s Season 21 fourth-place finisher, as well as finishing out Round-Up with a fun afternoon at the Wild West Water Park! Juniors will have the opportunity to compete in various contests and win some great awards! The four main contests juniors will compete in are the promotions
contest, advocacy contest, stockman’s knowledge, and live animal and meat evaluation. Juniors are split into age divisions and earn points for their completion and success in each respective contest. At the end of Round-Up each division will have a high-point individual who will receive a buckle! Not all contests however require stockman’s skills and promotional knowledge. Throughout the week, each JRA director leads their team in team challenges. These challenges can vary from water games to scavenger hunts! The winning team also receives a prize! Our newest and most exciting award is the Top Hand Award. This honor is given to the individual whom the Board feels exhibits leadership, teamwork and the JRA spirit, and encompasses a great attitude throughout the entire trip. The worthy recipient will also walk away with a customized belt buckle! n

Heller’s Service Marked with Creative Leadership
“Kim and I were traveling together and our flight was delayed,” said VanWye. “Kim didn’t want to risk missing our planned activities so she rented a car and we drove all night from Iowa to Oklahoma to get there on time. Despite a less-than-ideal travel itinerary, we had a fun trip and Kim shared a lot of life advice with me.”
by Tracey Koester, ARA Editorial Coordinator
One of Albert Einstein’s famous quotes comes in the form of sage advice. “Out of clutter, find simplicity. From discord, find harmony. In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.” While opportunity for one might be perceived as difficulty for another, Junior Programs Coordinator Kim Heller has a knack for leading youth through figurative barricades and helping them find unimaginable personal growth. It’s now time for the Junior Red Angus Association of America members and JRA Board to step up to the challenge and put those skills into play for the organization’s next chapter. Heller recently announced that she would be leaving her post at the Red Angus Association of America to pursue a career opportunity with less travel, affording her more time at home with her young family. In Heller’s new position at a two-hospital business, she will serve as a consultant and provide organizational and leadership development training, thus applying her doctorate in adult education and her years of experience. In the two years that Heller served Red Angus youth, she has brought energy and enthusiasm not only for the breed, but for agriculture advocacy, leadership and personal achievement. Heller’s fresh ideas and broad perspective challenged the JRA Board to look beyond tradition and focus on the promises of the future. In one of her first leadership training sessions with the newly elected JRA Board, Heller dumped a bucket of Lego® blocks in the middle of the table and instructed the youth directors to build what they thought a good board and organization looked like. Then she challenged them to adjust and implement their new ideas to create a JRA organiza-
tion similar to the one they constructed out of Legos. Current JRA President Kacey Koester of Steele, North Dakota, had just been elected to the Board. The leadership session laid a strong foundation for creative problem-solving techniques over the next two years. “Kim has been fantastic working with the Board,” Koester said. “Her efficiency and execution for Board business has helped us grow and go places we did not think were attainable in such a short time. She has helped every Board member become more prepared for the business world, and taught us how to function both as a team and as individuals in various situations.” The JRA Board also knows Heller is resourceful at turning diverse situations into valuable life lessons – and make it a fun experience. Koester said, “She is fantastic at turning adverse circumstances into something great. No matter where we were or what we had to work with, she guided us to do our best and create a positive experience. Kim knows exactly how to direct each of us to find our unique skills and talents to better the entire team.” JRA Director and First Vice President Genna VanWye of Atlanta, Illinois, recalled botched travel plans to the 2016 National Red Angus Convention in Oklahoma City.
32 American Red Angus Magazine n April 2017
Those lessons that VanWye and the JRA Board learned from Heller covered leadership, personal development and having fun along life’s journey. For example, in every circumstance is an opportunity to network; and it’s not what you know necessarily, but who you know. The JRA Board also learned to enjoy traveling outside their comfort zone to industry venues across the nation – and taste new and different foods along the way. Heller elicited a strong work ethic and high standard of professionalism in her junior leaders but also coupled teambuilding and problem-solving development with memorable activities such as escape room adventure games. She also had tons of icebreaker games that had everyone laughing and visiting within minutes. The JRA Board – and Red Angus stakeholders as well – will continue to benefit from Heller’s influence. Along with her positive attitude and zest for life, she has instilled a foundation for critical-thinking and a license for imaginative problem solving. These life-long skills will help us find simplicity and harmony in our busy lifestyles and, most importantly, opportunity within even the most diverse situations. Kim, we sincerely thank you for your dedication, leadership and positive impact on Red Angus youth, and we wish you the most flourishing future in your new career and time spent with your family. n

Turkey Track Livestock Tightens Breeding Season, Increases Profitability by Trinity Lewis for American Red Angus Magazine
“More consistent calf crops translate into more consistent yearlings, which in turn puts more value in our cattle on sale day,” said Tiffany Hampson with Turkey Track Livestock. “Along with having a great set of yearling steers to sell every year, we have a very even group of bred replacement heifers to keep and sell which adds even more value to our operation.”
42 American Red Angus Magazine ■ April 2017
Joe and Tiffany Hampson run a progressive commercial cow-calf operation near Wright, Wyoming. The couple is enthusiastic about the excellent maternal traits the Red Angus breed offers and use the fertility of their herd to their advantage. With excellent maternal traits as their priority, the Hampsons have shortened their breeding season to only 30 days in order to prove up their females faster. Since making the change, conception rates at pregcheck time have gone up from the mid-80 percent range to the mid-90s, and overall heard health has increased.
“To help with the fertility in our cows, the shorter breeding season eliminates cattle that have a hard time breeding back and selects for easier keeping cattle that breed back year after year, Tiffany explained. They calve in the early spring and, in Wyoming, there is no guarantee for pleasant weather during early March and April. By shortening their calving window, there is less of an opportunity for bad weather to affect their calf crop. Joe and Tiffany all but live with their replacement heifers 24 hours a day during calving season, so keeping that window of time tight relieves them of too many days in the calving shed.
The Hampsons have shortened their breeding season to 30 days, tightening up their calving period, producing a more-consistent calf crop and proving up females faster.
American Red Angus Magazine â– April 2017 43
Turkey Track Livestock Tightens Breeding Season, Increases Profitability At weaning in the fall, Joe and Tiffany keep back their calves, backgrounding them before selling the steers as yearlings and retaining their heifers. Joe said that the shortened breeding season has been a big help in keeping uniformity in their herd. “We sell our yearlings steers through a sale barn and, with the consistency in our cattle’s size and weight, they are able to sell in larger, more consistent weight groups. This last year they sold in two groups and the difference in average weight was only 9 pounds,” said Joe. “When we used to have a longer breeding season, our steers would be broken down into four – sometimes five – weight groups which never sell as well as larger groups,” he said. The Hampsons appreciate the influence the shorter breeding season has had on their replacement heifers as well, claiming that a more uniform herd size and weight in bred replacement heifers makes it easier to compare and pick the best replacement females to keep.
This spring will be Turkey Track’s fifth breeding season AIing heifers and a select group of cows. The rest of their nearly 250-head herd are naturally serviced for only 30 days. After AIing, they turn bulls out for 21 days to catch the females that didn’t take. Due to their AI program, the Hampsons are very satisfied with the fancy look of their replacement heifers and said that this year was the hardest year to pick which heifers to keep and which ones to send down the road because of their uniformity. To nutritionally prepare their herd for breeding season, Joe and Tiffany start by ensuring their cows are very healthy and well fed prior to and during calving. The Hampsons continue to feed hay until spring when the grass has begun growing. They supplement grass with salt, mineral blocks and Breed-Up lick tubs in order to maintain their condition from branding time through breeding. The Hampsons stated that good bull selection is imperative to ensure success in a short breeding season.
The tightened calving window makes for a more uniform herd of replacement heifers.

Turkey Track Livestock Tightens Breeding Season, Increases Profitability Joe explained their selection process. “We select for consistency in frame size and yearling weight to maintain an even more consistent group of calves. We look for bulls that produce easy-fleshing cattle, low birth weight and high growth.” For a bull to make it to Turkey Track Livestock they must also have good maternal traits and be great female producers. Although they’ve achieved great success with a shortened breeding season, the Hampsons have learned some hard lessons along the way. The hardest – the strict culling measures that have to be taken in order to achieve fertility on such an extreme level. Although they had to sell good cows that usually breed back late in a longer breeding program, Joe and Tiffany knew that those genetics must be eliminated. Before irrationally jumping on to the shorter-breeding-season bandwagon, the Hampsons encourage fellow producers to consider their bottom line. “Everyone's breeding and calving program is differ-
ent and it needs to work depending on where you value your profitability. For some operations this may not be a model that is profitable, and for others the advantages may show up after a couple years just as it has for our operation.” They emphasize the need for producers to be prepared for large numbers of cull cattle and to have a plan in place for replacing females to supplement the losses during the first couple of years of using a shorter season. Joe and Tiffany went on to say that a disadvantage to a shorter breeding season is the need for more bulls. While building up a replacement herd, it is also important to be bolstering bull numbers as well. “After you get your bull numbers up you just buy replacements as needed to maintain your selected number of bulls,” Tiffany said. Joe and Tiffany took over Tiffany’s father’s operation in 2011. Tiffany worked closely with her dad since moving ‘home’ in 2003.
Joe and Tiffany Hampson operate on Tiffany's father's ranch that was originally purchased by her grandfather in the 1950s.

Turkey Track Livestock Tightens Breeding Season, Increases Profitability Her grandfather originally purchased the ranch in the early 50s and, like most everyone at the time, had a good herd of Hereford cattle. “My dad took over the operation in 1979 and, in 1980, he started crossing red cattle on the Hereford cattle. He decided in 1986 to raise just red cattle and started selling the crossed cattle when he could.” In closing, Joe enthusiastically stated, “We strive to produce excellent quality replacement females and consistent yearling steers, and this breeding model has not disappointed. It only seems to get better with time.” Joe and Tiffany’s logic for using Red Angus cattle is much like that of the entire nation as Red Angus females continue to soar in popularity. However, the Hampsons have gone above and beyond taking pride in their commercial herd and have turned it into a group of cattle that do a great job of representing the breed. ■

Muscle Characterization in Yearling Red Angus Heifers by Tom Brink, RAAA Chief Executive Officer
Muscle matters in beef business. Red meat is what producers and feeders sell to consumers. Red meat yields are an important price determinant on all industry grids. Light-muscled cattle often meet with substantial discounts for Yield Grade 4 and Yield Grade 5 carcasses. Heavier-muscled steers and heifers earn premiums for their higher percentage of Yield Grade 1s and Yield Grade 2s. Visual muscle is also something buyers appreciate when they evaluate bulls and females for purchase. Muscling Ahead Toward the goal of continued Red Angus breed improvement, the focus should be on eliminating light-muscled cattle, rather than on creating large numbers of extremely heavy-muscled animals. It is probably more important to raise the bottom 25 percent of the muscle bell curve up to acceptable levels than to continually push the top side higher and higher. If Red Angus could remove the bottom portion of the muscle bell curve and replace those animals with cattle possessing average or modestly above-average muscling, the breed would take a sizable step forward.
To facilitate this process, a broad characterization of Red Angus muscle is helpful. We can benefit from a big-picture view of what qualifies as a lightmuscled animal versus one that is average or above average. RAAA has large volumes of ultrasound ribeye measurements, which allows us to observe muscling variation across the breed in a comprehensive manner. Breed-Wide Perspective Analysis of over 13,000 Red Angus yearling heifers reveals significant variability in ultrasound ribeye measurements. Some cattle have quite a bit more muscle than others, which is typi-
cal of all beef breeds. Heifers are evaluated here, but Red Angus bulls would show similar variation in muscling. There is always a bell curve in every trait, every herd and every breed. First in this evaluation, we note that heifers weighing more as yearlings tend to have larger ribeye sizes, as shown in the accompanying chart. No surprise with that. Because of their higher growth genetics, higher plane of nutrition, or both, heavier heifers are more developed (further along the growth curve) and have more expressed musculature compared to lighter-weight heifers at the same age. This phenomenon is the reason for the upward sloping relationship between yearling weight and ribeye size. It’s also why ribeye size should be evaluated in an apples-to-apples context, within a weight-adjusted contemporary group. For the breed as a whole, a 600-pound average-muscled yearling heifer measures around 8.0 square inches of ribeye area when scanned via ultrasound. At the other end of the weight spectrum, a 1,000-pound yearling heifer with 11.0 square inches is near the Red Angus average. Follow the chart’s red line from left to right to see what phenotypic breed average looks like at various yearling weights.

Muscle Characterization in Yearling Red Angus Heifers Another example: a 750-pound heifer with 9.0 square inches of ribeye is about mid-breed for muscling. These are, of course, raw data measurements, but they do offer a general perspective on what type of muscling is present in the Red Angus heifer population. The second important observation to make from the chart is that ribeye sizes vary a lot between heifers of the same weight. From breed average to the top 3 percent, ultrasound ribeye measurements change by approximately 2.5 square inches (green line versus the red line on the chart). That’s a lot of muscle! The same can be said when looking at the difference between average and the bottom 3 percent (another 2.5 square inches). Overall, the vast majority of the Red Angus heifer population
falls within the range depicted by the green and yellow lines on the chart. With this type of range from high to low, and knowing that muscling is a moderate-to-highly heritable trait, rapid progress can be made toward eliminating small ribeye genetics. EPDs, contemporary groups ratios (registered heifers), and DNA results (commercial heifers) are all useful tools toward that end. Few commercial heifers are scanned with ultrasound, but those who are serious about keeping only the best replacements might consider adding this tool to their screening portfolio. Sire selection is also very important, and those needing a muscle boost in their herds will want to use Red Angus bulls with Ribeye EPDs in the top half of the breed. â–

How to Achieve Top Dollar by Kenny Stauffer, Top Dollar Angus General Manager
The cattle feeding industry is evolving and our customers are requiring more. Are you ready?
For over 100 years, our nation’s beef production system has been commodity-based. You take your “commodity” (your cattle) to the local auction barn, sell private treaty to the local feed yard or, more recently, take a video of them and broadcast to the entire nation.
No matter which form of marketing service you prefer, they are all basically the same – you get paid by the total pounds you deliver. This form of marketing has served our industry well for a long time, but recently the rules have begun to change. Over the past decade, an increasing number of our nation’s producers became tired of receiving average market price for their cattle when it was obvious to them that they were worth more. That’s when “Value Added Marketing” got its start. It’s been getting stronger ever since. Are their cattle really worth more and what value-added methods are they using? Cow-calf producers deserve premium prices if they go the

extra mile to purchase high-end genetics, use AI in their breeding programs, have a superior health and vaccine protocols in place, or use progressive management practices that set their programs apart. That’s where a third-party verification and marketing-assistance company – such as Top Dollar Angus – can help you take your operation to the next level and improve your bottom line. Once your herd is genetically qualified under the Top Dollar Angus brand, our goal is to drive demand, get premium prices, and help you differentiate your product from the rest of the competition. We help give your buyers the re-assurance that your cattle are exactly what you say they are. Just about every day we receive a phone call from a producer either wanting to qualify for Top Dollar Angus or asking for assistance in marketing their cattle. The first thing we ask for is a little genetic history, vaccine records and a description of their cattle so we can better understand their operation and the quality of their cattle.

How to Achieve Top Dollar It’s no surprise, but we’ve never had a producer tell us that his or her cattle are no good or that they are just average. Instead, we hear things such as: • “These are some of the best cattle that walk.” • “You would have to drive a long way to find a better set of calves.” • “They have had all their shots.” • “Oh, their genetics are superior, I’ve purchased 100 percent of my bulls from the John Doe Ranch for the past 10 years.” Now, stop and put yourself in your buyer’s shoes. Would you pay a premium for information and a description like this? Your answer is probably, “No!” – and it should be. You have no valid data or verification of the facts, and more than likely, you have two different opinions of what quantifies as good cattle. Everyone thinks their cattle are the best and which is no surprise. However, your idea and your buyer’s idea of “all their shots” might be different. The seller might think that a 7-Way Clostridial shot is all they need, but the buyer might assume they’ve also been vaccinated for IBR, BRSV and BVD, and have also been dewormed.
tion in order for your buyer to pay extra for your feeder calves. That’s where we can help. Top Dollar Angus is a geneticcertification and marketing-assistance company that ensures the quality of your cattle and helps market Red Angus and Angus feeder cattle that rank in the top 25 percent of their breed in carcass and growth genetic traits. If you have the genetics in your herd to qualify for this elite program, I would be happy to visit with you about how Top Dollar Angus can increase demand and create premiums for your operation. A herd can qualify for Top Dollar Angus brand two different ways. The first is to provide a minimum of four years (more is better) worth of documented sire usage data. The second method is a DNA evaluation on a specified breed rank percentage (set by Top Dollar Angus) for your operation’s replacement heifer calves. We require our producers’ average sire data EPDs or DNA test results to prove that their herd ranks in the top 25 percent of the breed, evaluating YW, CW, Marb and REA. Once qualified, Top Dollar Angus goes to work helping you marketing your cattle.
When it comes to Top Dollar Angus, genetics are of utmost importance. You can see the dilemma that a response such as that stated above can cause when trying to sell superior genetics. Just because 100 percent of this producer’s genetics came from the same name-brand operation doesn’t prove quality in any form. Who’s to say that this individual didn’t purchase the last 10 bulls in the sale every year or he waited to bid on the bulls that no one else did. In most instances, he has now accumulated a group of bulls that probably are of less quality even though they all came from the same breeder.
It is our customers’ choice on how they wish to market their cattle, and they will be aggressively promoted to several hundred buyers that have requested to be notified when we have high-genetic cattle in our offering. Our Top Dollar Angus cattle feeders know and have seen the proof; the concept works. They no longer must worry about the genetic differences that are typical in a pen of cattle. Top Dollar Angus has helped reduce the risk associated with feeding unknown cattle. No longer does a red or black hide mean a guaranteed premium. Feeders want to know what’s underneath the hide – they want top-quality genetics.
I believe and hope that with these examples you will see why this type of “generic marketing” will no longer generate premium prices. You must have proof and verifica-
Let Top Dollar Angus help you capture premiums by giving your calves the name recognition they deserve.
