Designed for commercial producers retaining replacement heifers, this single index measure compares and ranks all Red Angus sires in the breed, to provide a single measure of expected profitability for every sire compared to all other Red Angus sires. 41 of the 50 highest ranking sires on the Red Angus Herd Builder Index are Beckton sires or descended from Beckton sires, including 16 of the top 20. In our annual bull sale on Tuesday, April 11, most of the 250 bulls and 50 heifers selling will rank in the top 10% of Red Angus breed. Many of the bulls in the sale will be in the top 1 or 2% of the breed, with an expected profitability gain over $15,000. Even the average bull in our sale will have an expected profitability gain of more than $10,000 compared to the average non-Beckton Red Angus bull. Adding Value More Important Than Ever As cattle producers, it is time to start thinking about buying new bulls for the upcoming breeding season. With record high prices being seen at bull sales in the last couple of years, many producers opted to keep that older bull “for just one more season. He surely can get ‘er done one more year!” Well, now that “extra year” has come and gone and he really needs to be replaced this year. The problem is … the calf market took a significant swan dive this past year and now everyone is faced with replacing more bulls than they usually do on an annual basis, with less cash flow to fund those purchases. This is where we need to be extra cautious in our judgement concerning how much to lower our bull budget. On one hand, we want to make sure we have enough in the bank to pay all of those pesky bills like taxes, fuel, vaccine, etc. that just seem to keep marching on whether we want them to or not. On the other hand, we need to remember that just because the market is down, we still want to keep the quality of our bull battery strong. Don’t forget, bulls are half of the genetics of each and every calf that hits the ground. If you are used to going to your favorite bull producer and choosing from his top pen, you should continue to choose from that top pen this year. Another thing to think about – especially closely in a down market – is how you are going to market YOUR calves for maximum profit. The last few years, we could sell our calves at a good price

no matter how aggressive we were in marketing. Now we need to step up and look for any options that might add value to our calf crop. If you are a commercial producer, you certainly need to look at enrolling your calves in the Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program. This not only identifies to the buyers that your calves are out of registered Red Angus bulls, it also qualifies them to sell on either the Tyson Choice+ grid or Greater Omaha’s G.O. RED grid. Maybe seeing if your herd qualifies to sell with the Top Dollar Angus label would benefit you and add value to your feeder calves. Perhaps becoming GAP certified or selling as verified natural would add value. Whatever value-added program(s) you choose, realize that a little extra marketing on your part may pay big dividends in the end. For those of us that are seedstock producers, the same logic concerning ramping up our marketing plans holds true. Now is when we need to take the extra time to visit with our customers and receive feedback concerning their bull needs and how we can improve our operations to help make all of us more successful. We need to be extra careful when making our breeding selections or our culling decisions to ensure that we are selling our customers the best bulls with the best phenotype combined with the best genetics that we can. If we keep improving our own herds, we will in turn improve our customers’ herds, therefore helping to improve their bottom lines. If their bottom lines improve, Red Angus will continue to become more popular and we will all benefit! n

Stepping Forward in 2017 The Red Angus Association of America is heading into 2017 in a significantly better position compared to when 2016 began. We battled a sizable registration backlog most of last year, but that is behind us now. RAAA is officially caught up. Turnaround times on registrations, transfers, weight updates and other office processes are back to where they should be – 7 to 10 business days or less. Thanks to a lot of hard work by our Member Services Department, and other office staff who chipped in as schedules allowed, the infamous backlog is history.

REDSPro has also progressed a great deal. Breed association software is exceedingly complex, expensive and time consuming to build, and constantly in need of new features. That said, the REDSPro list of needed modifications is getting shorter with each passing month. Overall system functionality is 95-plus percent in all departmental areas. Expenditures on programming continue to trend lower. Another challenge RAAA faced last year was with the National Cattle Evaluation that generates Red Angus Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs). Pulling each new round of data for the evaluation came with a measure of difficulty, mainly because the data was being harvested from REDSPro for the first time. We bumped along the learning curve during the first few tries, but now have automated the process. Numerous data filters and checks have also been implemented to make this data retrieval more seamless and accurate.

Stepping into 2017 Being in a stronger position with our basic services allows RAAA to move ahead aggressively in the coming year. Working toward an even brighter future for the Red Angus breed is what drives this Association. Here is a partial list of the steps we will be taking in that direction. (1) Release of REDSPro Software to Members No specific date is set at this time, however, we are close enough to a finished product that the second quarter (April through June) is a reasonable target for the release. Providing members with the ability to do their own work online – using REDSPro – has been the vision since the first line of computer code was written in 2012. We are almost there. (2) Uniquely Promoting the Breed Have you noticed that Red Angus is becoming a mainstay in the cattle industry press? Mentions, articles and pictures are on the rise, and much more is in store for 2017. Look for Red Angus to be “out front” in the industry more than ever this year, providing leadership and education on topics relevant to commercial cattle producers. We will maintain an aggressive advertising campaign, led by the “RED. RIGHT. NOW.” theme. Just as important is the positive PR coming from our efforts to contribute valuable information designed to help cow-calf operations maintain their profitability in a softer market environment. Pay attention to what happens at our BrainTrust meeting in Denver this month, and look for more of same throughout the rest of the year.

Association Commentary

The industry is changing; it’s time to take cattle feeding down a new road. Recent advancements in cattle nutrition have opened new routes to help limit pulls, treatment and positively benefit the health of an animal. Adopting a new measure of prevention through the feed is an important first step to help minimize delays on the road ahead. (3) Breed Improvement – One Herd at a Time Even with an already great breed of cattle, there is always room for improvement. The goal of each seedstock and commercial producer should be to make their individual herd better. Is your cowherd head and shoulders above where it was five years ago? Is your calf crop better and more consistent with each passing year? If so, none of that happened by accident. Just the opposite. Setting goals and working step by step toward improving your herd is the only path to progress. RAAA can help with that. In 2017, we are offering a confidential Herd Improvement Form to all Red Angus breeders (seedstock and commercial) who would like to write down their specific breeding goals and map out the steps they plan to take to reach those objectives. It’s a personal herd improvement plan, where you fill in the blanks. For more information, see pages 22-28 in this issue of ARA. We all understand the need to be intentional with our breeding programs. Committing your breeding goals to paper, and reviewing them periodically, is an excellent way to stay focused and on task. (4) Relocating the RAAA Office to Denver Though still several months away, completing the relocation to Denver, Colorado, will be another strategic accomplishment in 2017. The benefits of being more centrally located are real. We will reside in closer proximity to a higher percentage of our members and customers, making travel easier and less expensive. Denver is a major livestock hub, and a good place to recruit top talent for the Association staff. Be sure to stop by for a visit once the new office is open. More could be discussed about our plans for breed advancement in 2017, but this snapshot provides some perspective on where we’re headed. George Chiga, a founding member of RAAA, once said about those early years that “there was so much to learn.” He further explained how Red Angus got involved in broad-ranging educational programs and took numerous other non-traditional steps in launching the Red Angus breed and the Association. RAAA founders saw the same things others saw at the time, but they perceived them differently. It motivated them to step forward in unique ways. We hope to take a page out of their playbook in 2017. n

Managing the Most-Limiting Factor

The area in west central Missouri where I live is predominantly a row crop area. My brother and my nephew farm together and I consider them progressive producers that constantly strive to increase yields, marketing efforts and profits. Many of the seminars and meetings I see advertised by agronomy companies focus on managing the most-limiting factor. My family spends a lot of time quantifying the limiting factor and then developing an economical plan to correct it. This topic intrigues me, as I donâ€™t see it mentioned in most beef production conversations.

Bull sale season is upon us and we are charged with selecting genetics that will likely influence our herd for years. EPDs are a quantifiable tool that can assist us in propelling our herd forward. Selecting for economically relevant traits can move our genetic needle past average and into the upper quartile of cattle that are produced. This progress can be made quicker with technologies that are becoming more widely available to beef producers. The Red Navigator commercial heifer test is technology that gives us information about our replacement heifers we have never had access to before. By knowing more about the genetic potential of our replacements, we can be very strategic in mating these heifers to maximize the traits we are selecting for. The test results give parentage and percentile ranks within the commercial Red Angus population tested for every EPD Red Angus measures, including our HerdBuilder and GridMaster indices. At its most basic use, sire identification of the heifers will allow us to reduce inbreeding and the resulting performance loss that would go with it. Knowing where these heifers rank within the population can give us real data to analyze where our most-limiting factor truly is.

While most crop producers take a full systems approach to management, they tend to analyze their production and finetune the areas that are the greatest limiter. The science of precision fertilizer application has become common. While fertilizer is likely a limiting factor, precise application in the correct amounts, is the best way to manage this segment. Simply applying more and more fertilizer will quickly turn into diminishing returns, draining production and profits.

For example, by knowing our heifers rank poorly in marbling, we can select sires that have the genetic capability to improve this trait, accelerating our genetic progress. Members of the Commercial Marketing Team would welcome the opportunity to answer questions about the test and discuss its applications in your herd. Once you have tested your heifers, we will assist you in interpreting your results to help you minimize limiting factors.

My brother and nephew are constantly searching for the technology that allows them to know which factor is most limited and then incorporate the appropriate solution into their management system. They are willing to spend extra money on a planter that will accurately place the correct number of seeds and ensure proper stands as a means to prevent plant population from being the limiting factor in their corn yields. They thoroughly embrace any technology that will prove financially beneficial.

As beef producers, are we managing our most-limiting factor? How can we fine-tune our operations to best do this? First, we have to quantify what we are trying to measure and then develop a plan that allows us to economically correct those sections that are subpar. There can be multiple layers to the full systems management approach. Health, nutrition, genetics and marketing quickly come to mind as things that could be limiting production and profits. Letâ€™s focus on a couple of these: genetics and marketing.

The longstanding tradition continues to provide a forum for cattlemen to consider innovative opportunities as the Red Angus Association of America’s annual BrainTrust event will be held on Saturday, Jan. 7, at the DoubleTree Hotel in Denver, Colorado. The workshop will begin at 1:30 p.m. MST. Members unable to attend in person are invited to view the program live on DVAuction.com. BrainTrust serves as a platform for innovation where seedstock breeders and commercial cattlemen join to discuss the use of science and technology to boost ranch-gate returns. This year’s program will include keynote addresses from beef industry leaders – Dr. Matt Spangler, University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension beef specialist; Dr. Kent Anderson, associate director of technical services for Zoetis Genetics; and Dr. Jim Gibb, technical services director with GeneSeek. Each speaker will highlight the emerging science behind DNA information and data, and the practical application these new scientific discoveries provide for cattlemen, specifically through commercial heifer applications. Gary Fike, RAAA director of commercial marketing, will also be making the case for health protocols along with Dan Thompson, DVM, Kansas State University’s School of Veterinary Medicine, and A.J. Tarpoff, DVM, Kansas State University Extension veterinarian. They will unveil the results of a recently completed survey of practicing large-animal veterinarians and their observations on the use of various health protocols in the field, and the economic implications of using some of the industry’s best-health and overall beef-cattlemanagement practices. The afternoon will conclude with a discussion panel featuring cattlemen who have implemented some of these innovative technologies into their beef businesses. They will share personal insight into the benefits of DNA in their commercial herds and how it has affected their selection process. Achieving Herd Success Through Red Angus’ Herd Improvement Initiative by Larry Keenan, Director of Breed Improvement

The attraction of western traditions, respect for a solid day of work, and a love for cattle and land has lured many great folks into the cattle business. These characteristics lead many ranch owners to be actively involved in the day-to-day operations of the ranch. While taking an active role in the labor force of the cattle operation can provide some advantages, owners and managers should caution from slipping into a regimen of only working IN the business, and not working ON the business. Working on the operation through developing a strategic plan or setting goals is typically one of those chores that gets pushed to the back burner. That is understandable because most producers don’t have experience in strategic planning. Thankfully, setting goals for your cattle operation is a simple process and the end result does not need to be complicated. In reality, most producers have at least started the process of setting breeding goals for their farm or ranch. It’s common for significant operational decisions to be contemplated while the owner or manager performs tasks that don’t demand too much thought, such as field work or winter feeding. While these are great opportunities to think through decisions, they rarely provide an environment in which to write down the final decision and goal, and the steps needed to achieve these goals. Oftentimes, this results in long-term strategic objectives being mentally set, but since they are not written down, they fade away as time lapses. Goal-Setting Plan Recognizing the positive impact that can be made through documenting breeding and other goals, Red Angus is excited to announce a new, no-cost initiative, the Red Angus Herd Improvement Plan, that is designed to assist commercial and seedstock producers in achieving the objectives for their operation. The concept of the Herd Improvement Plan is very simple – achieving goals starts with documenting them, and these goal are fasttracked when you have an accountability partner.

Achieving Herd Success Through Red Angus’ Herd Improvement Initiative RAAA staff will occasionally contact the participating producer to discuss their operation’s progress in achieving the defined goals. It’s important to know that through this process RAAA staff will simply serve as a resource to assist producers in achieving their goals. RAAA will not judge, rank, scrutinize or publicly release individually submitted Herd Improvement Plans. In reviewing the accompanying Herd Improvement Plan, you will see that the first section is simply gathering background information on your operation. The purpose of this information is to provide the RAAA staff member with a broad understanding of the business, what tools you employ in sire selections, and any annual benchmarks you use to assess the success of the evaluation. Set Goals The ‘meat’ of the Plan starts with the section that contains the two to five herd-improvement goals. As you develop your goals, ensure that they are measureable. If a goal isn’t quantifiable, you will never know when it is achieved. List the goals in order of significance and also note which goals are harder or easier to achieve.

Missing a deadline can significantly reduce the momentum you have built up within the plan.

Red Angus Assistance Completed Herd Improvement Plans should be submitted to RAAA, where they will be confidentially stored (see page 28 for an example). Following receipt of a plan, an RAAA staff member will contact the submitting producer to review the plan. While the core of the Herd Improvement program is assisting individual operations to achieve their goals, the collective impact resulting from numerous operations participating in the program has the potential to exponentially improve the Red Angus breed. This summer I was lucky enough to be selected to be part of the Texas Youth Cattle Conference in Corpus Christi through the Texas Beef Council. I was chosen from an application process that included teenagers from all across Texas involved in breed associations, 4-H and FFA programs. I was thrilled to be one of the few chosen to participate in this amazing opportunity. During the three days of the convention, my time was filled with non-stop learning experiences. We started the first day with a brief overview to the program and an introduction of everyone attending the conference. We participated in a leadership session from SpeakEasy Training, LLC, where we learned how to communicate to all types of people on the importance of beef. After lunch, we loaded the bus and headed to a Corpus Christi Hooks game at Whataburger Field.

were able to learn about the marketing and branding side, but we were also able to take a tour of the actual plant. This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that not many get to witness. I learned so much while touring the plant. Experiencing that side of the cattle industry was so intriguing to me, as I’ve only ever raised show cattle, and not production cattle. After the tour of Kane Beef we loaded the buses again and headed to the King Ranch in Kingsville. After the tour David Delaney, vice president and general manager of the King Ranch, spoke to our group on how to successfully adapt to the changes of ranch life. After leaving the King Ranch we headed to TAMU Kingsville, for my favorite part of the whole trip – pregnancy checking cattle. I had never been taught how to do that so the hands-on learning was awesome to me. Since the conference, I’ve actually used this skill a lot and have been working on perfecting it!

The last day of the tour we drove back to San Antonio and toured the Whataburger Headquarters and had a nutrition workshop at the HEB Partner Service Center.

The North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) hosted the 2016 National Junior and Open Red Angus Show in mid-November in Louisville, Kentucky. Jeff Bedwell of Isabella, Oklahoma, judged the Junior Show, and Kyle Colyer of Bruneau, Idaho, judged the Open Show. With 243 females and 39 bulls exhibited, the 2016 National Red Angus show proved to be the largest National Show the breed has ever seen! Member Services Update Objective and Purpose of Total Herd Reporting

The objective of THR is to collect reproductive and performance data on all animals within the herd without controlling which animals should be reported. The purpose is to report either a calving record or a reason code as to why the female did not produce a calf for each year the registered female is listed as active. Why would we require every animal be reported and not just a select few? Requiring every animal allows for the elimination of bias towards elite animals, which in return is in favor for the elite animals to express the superiority of the individual. This also allows for a closer evaluation of those that are expressed as being inferior. The information from Total Herd Reporting is used to monitor overall breed reproductive performance and identify genetic, environmental and management efforts. This in return allows for improvement efforts to assist in selection and culling decisions, and generate data for producing genetic predictions for reproductive traits. For further information about THR, either contact the Association or visit redangus.org. A new year is a great time to review the Total Herd Reporting Annual Schedule. To help our members accomplish each requirement, the Members Services team mailed a THR calendar to each member. It can also be found on the web site at redangus.org/registration. To meet Step 1 of THR after Jan. 1, it will be time to update your Spring Herd Inventory for 2017. The herd inventory is available online via REDSPro. Also, it would be a great time to review what still needs to be reported for the previous year’s calving data through weaning. The Fall THR’s first installments have been billed. Also, accounts have been inactivated if lack of payments has occurred. If this is of concern, please contact the Association as soon as possible.

The Importance of Transferring Animals to all Buyers

Not only is it important to report reproductive and performance data, but also equally important to transfer animals after they have been purchased. Animals should be transferred to all types of buyers – both commercial and seedstock producers. By completing the process, this allows for 46 American Red Angus Magazine ■ January 2017

Also, by transferring the bulls, this documents sires available for breeding and the current owner can take advantage and utilize the Red Angus FCCP and Allied Access tagging programs.

DNA Parentage Rule starting with 2017 Calf Crop

All sires (AI and natural service) are now required to have a DNA sample on file with the RAAA. If a sample is not submitted prior to calves being registered, the calves out of that sire will be placed on hold (Z status) until it has been received. When a sample is on hold, this means that a registration paper cannot be issued and transfers cannot occur until resolved.

DNA Options to Make Marketing, Mating and Culling Decisions

The DNA products offered through RAAA continue to expand and provide opportunities to make the best marketing, mating and culling decisions based off of DNA results, combined with phenotypic and performance observation. The current submission processes have changed slightly by requiring payment up front and where to send samples. Products offered directly through RAAA are associated with the GeneSeek and Zoetis labs. All orders being submitted to GeneSeek and Zoetis should be sent to RAAA for processing. Member Services Update The labs and RAAA recommend the following products for specific groups of animals. Based off of these recommendations, please note animals should only be sent to one lab. It is not required nor recommended to send to both labs. Figure 1. below is simply showing recommendations based off of options. Example: I would like to test my registered commercial herd sire for enhanced EPDs. I would select either uLD OR i50K. • All GGP, Zoetis i50K, 50K & Red Navigator products include parentage. • Genetic defect requirements vary depending on mating and number of generations a carrier is present in the pedigree. Please see the Breeder’s Guide for specifics.

DNA Submit Report

A DNA Submit Report is available in REDSPro and provides easy access to animal data to complete the DNA order forms (see Figure 2.). The available report includes animal ID, sex, date of birth, registration number of calf, and sire and dam registration numbers. These can easily be copied and pasted from the report into either the GeneSeek or Zoetis Excel order forms. To access this report, go to Herd Management/ My Reports. Select group or copy and paste a Quick Group (50 maximum at a time), then select DNA Report.

Sampling DNA Faster Enhances Cattle Processing

What was once a challenge of collecting blood drops from a reluctant heifer or bull calf at chute side can today be done in mere seconds with new tools for tissue sampling. Recent field tests by Allflex USA show collecting DNA with the Allflex® TSU™ averaged 10 seconds per head. “The science of beef genomics testing is making big advances and so are the companion technologies that enable it,” said Scott Holt, North American marketing manager at Allflex USA Inc. “Making DNA sampling fast and clean makes it easier for the producer to adopt genomic-assisted selection, management and marketing.” When profiling cattle, it’s important to record an animal’s ID and correctly match it with the critter’s DNA sample. While that’s obvious, in the real world of handling cattle many things are happening at once. There are any number of ways to mix up DNA collection: mislabeling animal IDs, cross-contaminating blood or hair samples or having wind blow DNA test cards into mud and muck.

With a quick squeeze, the Allflex TSU collects a small tissue sample out of the ear. The sample goes directly into a vial of preservative. This is faster than other methods, particularly compared to collecting blood drops. The vial of tissue is pre-labeled with a scannable, unique barcode to tie to an animal’s ID. That barcode can also be matched with RFID tags or visual tags. The built-in barcodes can be uploaded into ranch management software, Excel sheets or DNA dashboards, another step saver. Once DNA testing is reported, barcoded animal ID or RFID or scannable ear tags brings data organization full circle – back into the setting where producers make management decisions. “Taking 10 seconds to collect a DNA sample and send it into the lab can give you information that will shave years off your herd improvement program,” said Micah Wells, beef genomics sales director at Neogen GeneSeek Operations. “Whether you are using GeneSeek® Genomic Profiler™ to genomically enhance EPDs, using Igenity® profiling to select commercial replacement heifers, or testing DNA for parentage, defects or other traits, the main aim is to pick better herd sires and brood cows for your future.” Wells added, “Allflex TSUs make the process of collecting DNA faster, easier and cleaner, whether you are tagging baby calves in the calving pasture or processing heifers at chute side or getting DNA for bulls on test.” n

Sustainable beef is more than just a term or buzz words for Beatty Canyon Ranch, home of cattle producers Steve and Joy Wooten and their daughter Arin, son-in-law Brady Burnham and family of Kim, Colorado. Sustainable beef – beef that is produced efficiently, packs the most nutrient punch and creates the least environmental impact – is at the forefront when it comes to key decisions.

Sustainable beef is also a key reason why this family ranch raises straight-bred commercial Red Angus and focuses heavily on bull selection. “Steve and Joy are fourth generation ranchers, Arin and I are fifth generation ranchers, and our boys represent the sixth generation,” said Brady. “We have to focus on sustainability to stay in the ranching business.” Founded by Steve’s great grandfather in 1929 and located in the canyon country of the Purgatorie River in southeastern Colorado, Beatty Canyon Ranch runs about 600 head of Red Angus females. Steve and Brady pointed out that Red Angus are a good fit on their ranch where steep, rough canyons bisect mesa tops, where vegetation is mostly shortgrass prairie and where only 10 to 14 inches of moisture is the norm.

Genetic Selection Process Vital to Sustainability Goals Sustainable Production Heifers and cows start calving in mid-February, with a majority calving in a 42-day window. First- and second-calf heifers calve near the home place while the older cows calve on the range.

Females are managed in groups based on their age: yearlings, 2-year-olds, 3-year-olds and mature cows. These groupings, Steve stressed, is for nutritional purposes. The goal is to have every cow wean a calf every year while maintaining a body condition score of 5 or better without excessive feed supplementation. Calves are worked in late-April to early-May. Gathering, sorting pairs and branding is a community event, involving 20 or so ranchers – including kids as young as 3 years old on horseback. Groups gather cattle from different pastures and herd them to a central location. After pairs are sorted, teams of adults brand, vaccinate and put a yellow Feeder Calf Certification Program ear tag in the steer calves. The pairs will be rounded up again in the fall, when the steer and heifer calves are vaccinated and weaned.

Steer calves are castrated, vaccinated, branded and given a yellow FCCP ear tag in the spring. Steer calves will be marketed via satellite video in the fall. Beatty Canyon Ranch’s goal is to produce steer calves that will perform in the feedyard, grade high Choice and meet the demands of high-end retailers and restaurants.

“While we sell pounds, the pounds we raise depend on moisture and when it comes,” Brady elaborated. “In a normal year, our steer calves will weigh 560 pounds. Other years they may hit 650 pounds or average just 500 pounds. Weight reflects Mother Nature.”

Their next stop is a heifer grower where they are backgrounded and brought to about 750 to 800 pounds. Prior to breeding, the heifers will be given a breeding soundness exam and pelvic measured. Female Foundation Brady and Arin will sort through the heifers prior to breeding season and will keep about 50 percent. They will sell the other heifers private treaty. “We’re in a building-the-herd phase,” Steve said. “My relatives survived the Dust Bowl, but the 15 years before last year were way worse, causing area ranchers to reduce their herds. We had to cut our herd by half between 2012 and 2014. Rains finally came in 2015, and we’re now building numbers again. We’re cautious, however. We don’t want to get ahead too far and get into another drought situation.” Heifers are time bred AI. AI sires used include their choice of sires available on the open market plus bulls that have been used natural service at Beatty Canyon Ranch and have

proven themselves worthy of collection. Bulls go in with the cows and heifers on May 10. The rule of thumb is one bull to 20 to 25 cows: Young bulls go out with 20 females while mature bulls will be put with 25 head. Their pastures are large with multiple water sources, and bulls have to travel to cover the cows.

Bull Selection Process Beatty Canyon Ranch prefers to keep a bull as long as he is physically able to sire calves. Thus, it’s not unusual for the ranch to keep a bull until it is 10 to 11 years of age. “We typically have a 15 to 20 percent turnover in bulls due to age or lack of fertility,” Steve said. While Steve and Joy once handled selecting and buying all bulls, they have handed over the task to Arin and Brady. “Arin is extremely involved in the day-to-day operation of the ranch,” said Brady. “She’s as much a part of the operation as I am. Whether it’s helping with cattle in any role or selecting bulls, Arin is hands on and very knowledgeable. You can tell she was raised on a ranch and is Steve’s daughter.”

Genetic Selection Process Vital to Sustainability Goals “My uncle taught me that everyone on the ranch needs an enterprise,” Steve said. “So, with their lifetime experience, heifer development and bull selection were turned over to Arin and Brady when they came back to the ranch. “They’re good at it,” said Steve.

When a bull sale catalog arrives at the ranch, Arin and Brady go through the sale offering numerous times before heading to a sale. Their initial focus is on EPDs, birth weight, scrotal circumference and maternal traits that influence cow efficiency and longevity. They want average or above-average EPDs; a balance of maternal, growth and energy traits; and bulls that will produce replacement-quality heifers. If a bull’s scrotal circumference is less than 34 cm, he’s out. If a bull has a birth weight of more than 70 pounds, he most likely will be out. An exception to the rule might be a bull where the couple knows the sire or dam lineage Calving Ease Direct and are confident they can bend the rule. “For some people, that 70-pound birth weight might seem really low,” Brady said, “but we need calving-ease bulls, because every bull purchased is put with yearling heifers. Therefore, we can select any heifer calf as a potential replacement into our herd.”

Brady explained that a newly purchased virgin bull will breed virgin heifers his first year and will be put with the same group of females the second year. Once a bull has reached maturity, he will be randomly placed in the cow herd.

Genetic Selection Process Vital to Sustainability Goals Beatty Canyon Ranch is strict about not purchasing bulls that are out of 2-year-old heifers. Their reason is simple: They like to have performance information on the dam. Brady, often accompanied by Arin, attends bull sales with Steve’s cousin, Joe Doherty, another Red Angus bull customer. Their first step is to walk through the entire sale offering separately, checking out the bulls that met their criteria. If one of the three reports a pick having a less-than-docile temperament, it’s removed from the list. The same goes for bulls that don’t meet the ranch’s specs for phenotype. “When we select a bull, he has to phenotypically look the part as well,” Brady said. “We don’t purchase a bull strictly by his numbers. We like a moderate-framed bull that is deep bodied, balanced, has lots of muscle in the hind quarter and looks like a range bull. He has to have a strong, wide back, lots of capacity and be structurally correct, with big-boned legs.” Brady continued, “We will remove several bulls on our list when we inspect them visually, but we won’t add any bulls to the list. We don’t deviate from our objective criteria.” One thing that hasn’t changed through the years and han-

dling of bull selection is where Beatty Canyon Ranch purchases its bulls. “For 40-some years, we’ve purchased our Red Angus from the same four to five breeders,” Steve said. “We want bulls raised in tough environments by seedstock producers who are trying to hit the same production goals as we are.” Another done-the-same-for-years practice at Beatty Canyon Ranch is using Red Angus bulls on straight-bred Red Angus cows. “I have to be honest,” Steve said. “I’ve looked at crossbreeding for heterosis, but I couldn’t find enough breeders of other breeds who had their birth weights under control the way Red Angus seedstock producers do. We also favor the performance, gentleness and adaptability of Red Angus.” “The Red Angus Association of America was the first association to performance test,” Steve pointed out. “The Association continues to meet our needs when it comes to performance testing data, EPDs and DNA – which are substantiated to us. Plus, we find the support of the Association invaluable to us commercial producers with marketing options such as genetics, age and source verification.” ■

In a unique beef industry event, three major associations joined forces to host “Mapping The Maze,” a seminar focused on guiding commercial cattlemen through the tangle of genetic, feeding and marketing options. State and national leaders from the Gelbvieh, Simmental and Red Angus breeds invited cattle producers and industry personnel to Mandan, North Dakota, to share insight from three of the partners of International Genetic Solutions. IGS is an innovative partnership of unprecedented collaboration between progressive breed associations focused on enhancing beef industry profitability. The breed experts also showcased valueadded marketing programs geared at putting more dollars in commercial producers’ pockets. Association Responsibility By design, breed associations carry an obligation to assist members and their bull-buying customers. American Gelbvieh Association Executive Director Myron Edelman laid the foundation for the seminar by outlining those responsibilities and their alignment to the growing global population and beef consumption. “Each association’s primary duty is to maintain the registry for that breed,” explained Edelman. “But beyond that obvious function is a commitment to provide accurate data and leading-edge technology through research and marketing. Essentially, we provide information to our seedstock and commercial producers that helps them make educated decisions in order to avoid critical errors in the production performance of their cowherds.” Ranchers and feeders are continually charged with the task of optimizing beef production. In order to feed the world, they must produce more beef in less time with fewer resources – all at a lower cost. Experts predict the world population will hit 8.5 billion by the year 2030 – an increase of nearly 2 billion people. That population growth will bring a consumption need for over 28 billion pounds of beef a year – 3 billion more pounds than produced today. (Source: USDA FAS) To prepare for the future, breed associations are working diligently to equip producers with tools, like EPDs, to identify which animals possess the most productive genetic traits. “Today’s cattle are trending higher weaning and yearling weights which is one step in producing beef faster and more efficiently,” said Edelman. He also identified heavier carcass

weights and better quality meat with more cattle grading Choice. “We have a lot of work ahead of us to feed the world’s growing population and meet beef consumption needs. Breed associations are the leaders in assisting producers to meet global beef demands with an economic protein source.” International Genetic Solutions Dr. Wade Shafer, American Simmental Association executive vice president, shared the vision and history behind the IGS model of synergizing breed association resources creating greater reliability in genetic evaluation. “When we formed IGS in 2010, we knew if we worked together, we’d achieve more than if we worked independently,” said Shafer. Currently, 12 breed associations represent 17 million head of registered cattle to form the world’s largest genetic evaluation – and it’s growing every year with the annual addition of 340,000 new animal records. These breeds share a common database for true across-breed EPDs, simplifying the bull-buying process for commercial cattlemen who employ planned crossbreeding to add profitability to their cattle through heterosis.

IGS partners focus on improved profitability for commercial ranchers by pooling research to integrate technology and education, serving as responsible stewards of information resources. “BOLT software, developed by Theta Solutions, is the next generation of genetic evaluation,” said Shafer. “This software will deliver more accurate, genomically enhanced EPDs at lightning-fast speed, taking our predictions to heights never seen before – anywhere.” Commercial cattlemen and women will benefit directly from BOLT technology through more reliable genetic predictions

when selecting bulls, plus new tools that are still in the development stages. “The sky is the limit,” concluded Shafer. “We are working on an IGS Feeder Profit Calculator that will do a better job of describing calves in terms of their actual dollar value. The calculator will provide both buyer and seller with more objective and accurate information with which to determine the relative economic value of a pen of calves. Ultimately, this results in producers who raise more profitable cattle being better rewarded for their efforts.” Creating Valuable Feeders Red Angus Association of America CEO Tom Brink said creating more valuable feeder cattle has three key concepts.

“First, you must start with the right mind set, and a big part of that is recognizing that it is possible to breed maternally and terminally valuable cattle in a single herd. Secondly, it’s important to understand the key value attributes for cattle going through the supply chain, and then to breed and manage your cattle accordingly.” “Cattle that stay healthy, grow fast and efficiently, and then grade on the rail are the profitable winners in every scenario,” he said.

Breed Synergy Generates Profit Advantage for Cattle Raisers He also reinforced the marketability of a uniform set of feeder calves. “Determine goals for your breeding program – whether it is straight bred or an F1 or composite system – to capitalize on hybrid vigor. If it takes more than two sentences to describe the genetic make-up of your calf crop, plan on being discounted.” Brink explained that simple, efficient breeding programs can result in a set of cattle that are above average and can potentially generate premiums when sold. His third point was to employ value-added marketing programs that verify health, genetics, a possible natural/NHTC designation, nutrition and source. “Do something good by creating calves capable of excelling through the rest of the beef supply chain,” he said, “then let others know their worth through enrollment in a valueadded marketing program. More programs will be built around the traits that matter to cattle feeders, packers and consumers. Premium prices are paid for cattle with known genetics that are superior for growth and carcass traits.” To earn premium prices from feed yards, producers should seek third-party verification for their cattle’s genetic superiority for high growth and marbling genetics. “A solid health and vaccination protocol is a must,” said Brink, “and historical feed yard and carcass performance data can also help. Groups of calves sold in load-lot groups will generate more dollars, and it’s a good idea to match calves with a yard who likes to feed the kind of cattle you produce.” Boots on the Ground The best laid plans – and knowledge – lose efficacy if not implemented into real-world applications. Each of the three breeds have staff teams geared at assisting commercial producers in their respective marketing programs in order to add value to their calf crops. Katie Ochsner, RAAA commercial marketing specialist, cited USDA statistics that verify production expenses are increasing at 43 percent while net cash income is only increasing at a rate of 29 percent. “Average is the new broke,” she said. “We are not making money on average cattle.” Ochsner emphasized the importance of knowing production and break-even statistics because it costs as much or more to care for a poor animal as it does a high-quality animal. She outlined four steps that producers can implement to reduce inputs and capitalize on opportunities to rise above average status: 1) Cut cow costs through improved genetics, management, feed and health protocols 90 American Red Angus Magazine ■ January 2017

2) Increase weaned calf crop percentage by improving pregnancy rates, calving management and calf health 3) Increase weaning weights through genetics, nutrition, health and tight calving season 4) Actively seek top sale price through marketing venues, value-added programs and reputation Ochsner encouraged cattlemen to invest in their cowherd by DNA testing commercial replacement heifers to verify sires and identify those females that fall below average, consequently eliminating them from production before breeding season. Speakers concluded the seminar by hosting a question-andanswer panel discussion, answering breed-specific questions on marketing opportunities. Through AGA, ranchers with any breed of commercial cattle can utilize their Smart Select Service to maintain breeding and management records. RAAA offers genetic, source and age verification through their Feeder Calf Certification Program, opening doors for free marketing assistance and premium grids. High-growth and high-carcass-merit cattle are also candidates for the Top Dollar Angus feeder calf program. Shafer reiterated that, now more than ever, it is important for commercial and seedstock producers to collect data points – weights, performance records, carcass ultrasound and kill data – to use in conjunction with EPD and genomics for the most accurate prediction tools ever realized. “We need more differentiation in this business for superior genetics and excellent health programs,” concluded Brink. “Marketing programs will provide that distinction.” For more information, visit each breed’s respective website, gelbvieh.org, simmental.org or redangus.org; or IGS’ site, www.internationalgeneticsolutions.com. ■

Sire Selection – An Investment in Your Future by Kenny Stauffer, General Manager, Top Dollar Angus® General Manager

With the spring bull buying season just around the corner, it’s good to review the most important decisions commercial producers face every year when it comes to genetic management and herd sire procurement.

Time Spent Evaluating Your Operation’s Genetic Improvement Do you spend enough time evaluating and planning genetic selections for the coming breeding season? Each commercial producer should stop and think about this question. The choices about which bulls to purchase, which AI sire to use, and which bulls to cull should be recognized as some of the most important decisions you make every year. Whether favorable or not, the results of these decisions will live on in your herd for many years to come.

For example, let’s take the bulls you plan to buy this spring of 2017. The earliest you will see any return on this investment will be the fall of 2018 when you sell your steers as calves (about 18 months from purchase date). Now if you save his daughters as replacements, the wait is even longer to see if the decision was the right one. It will be 2020 before that heifer has her first calf and you get to see what type of maternal traits you bought back on that cold, late-winter day in 2017. If that heifer’s calf is below average at weaning, the heifer’s docility is unde-

sirable or she doesn’t have enough milk, disappointment will reign the day. You now realize that almost three years have been wasted and that little, if any, genetic improvement has been made. What do you do? You either deal with it for the next 10 years of that cow’s life or cull those young females and start over. Either decision will be costly to your operation. The worst part is that it could have been avoided back in the spring of 2017. Don’t get me wrong – we have all been there. We bought a bull we “had to have” and the following year were very disappointed with the results. We are dealing with both genetics and Mother Nature, and we can’t always predict the future. However, with today’s advancements in technology and more accurate EPDs, we now have a much higher probability in the accuracy of our decision making. Effective bull selection is both science and an art. Below, are a number of considerations to take into account for the 2017 bull-buying season. Build a Relationship One of the most important relationships each commercial producer must have is with his or her seedstock supplier. Do your research and don’t jump around too much from sale to sale. Talk to your neighbors and other commercial cattlemen you respect. Visit with your breed association representative. Approach seedstock providers of interest and ask to see their records. Go to their operation long before sale day.

You want to find a breeder that has integrity, one you trust, with the same breeding philosophy, and one that has nothing to hide. Once you find that breeder(s), sit down with them and discuss your goals. They will help facilitate the bull selections that fit your operation. If you are loyal to them, most will bend over backwards to make sure you succeed.

Sire Selection – An Investment in Your Future

Do Your Homework Once you find the seedstock breeder of your choice, do your homework. You really cannot make a fully informed buying decision the morning of the sale. There will be 100-plus people walking around moving the bulls, you will see your neighbor that stops to visit for 30 minutes, bulls are in 12 inches of straw so you can’t see their feet and, after awhile, they all look the same. Then the sale starts and you end up buying solely on a few EPDs you understand and price of the bull. Don’t allow this type of buying experience to cost your operation for many years to come. Recommendations: 1. Make sure you educate yourself and truly understand what all the EPDs mean. You shouldn’t only be looking at birth weight (BW) and weaning weight (WW). 2. Once you understand the EPD values for each trait, rank them in order of your ranch’s or farm’s needs. 3. Have the breeder put their entire sale list on an Excel spreadsheet that you can visualize with all the EPD data on one page. It will be eye opening once it’s all together and you don’t have to flip through the catalog to compare. The greatest thing about Excel is the ability to then sort them for your desired minimum requirements for each individual EPD trait. Before long you will have a very small list of bulls that meet all of the traits you require to move your operation to the next level. 4. Finally, take your list and go spend an afternoon at the seller’s operation a day or two before the sale. This allows you to have no distractions and to see the bulls prior to them being in their “sale clothes.” You should also have one-on-one time with the breeder so you can ask all the questions you want without feeling rushed. Use EPDs to Create More Valuable Cattle For a review on how EPDs affect the value of a calf crop, we will make a several-trait comparison between two Red Angus bulls shown in the table below.

Assume that Bull B costs $1,500 more to purchase than Bull A. Next, let’s determine whether investing $1,500 extra dollars in this higher growth and carcass bull is a smart business decision.

BW EPD (Birth Weight) Based on their BW EPDs, both bulls will have offspring close in size at birth. This trait tends to be a big focus in many operations – and rightly so to a point. Birth weight, however, can be over emphasized in some cases, especially on mature cows. A little larger calf is usually stronger, healthier and has more vigor at birth especially on those real cold mornings. Don’t sell yourself short on your mature cowherd and purposely start 15 to 20 pounds lighter than necessary. That said, there is not a big difference between Bull A and Bull B in this example, so BW EPD is not a factor in which bull to purchase in this example. WW EPD (Weaning Weight) WW EPD is used to help predict the weight of a group of calves at weaning. Notice Bull A has an EPD value of 45, while Bull B has an EPD value of 63. This means that Bull B, on average, will wean 18 pounds more per calf than Bull A. Assume each bull sires 30 calves per year for a total difference of 540 pounds weaned, or a dollar value of $756 (540 x $1.40 per pound) or over the average five-year life of your bull, that is an astonishing $3,780. YW (Yearling Weight) This value helps to predict the size of your calf at a year of age, which matters for those who either retain ownership or want the best for whomever purchases their calves at weaning. Bull A has a YW EPD of 85 and Bull B is at 111. Once again, this prediction says that Bull B will outdo Bull A with an added 26 pounds per calf at a year of age for a total difference of 780 pounds on 30 calves or a value difference of $975 (780 x $1.25 per pound). Over an assumed five-year life of the bull, that amounts to $4,875. Milk EPD (Daughter’s Milking Ability) This trait ranks the milking ability of a sire’s daughters. The difference in value of a given Milk EPD to the next is expressed in pounds of calf weaned by those daughters. Bull B’s daughters will wean 2 pounds more per calf each year than Bull A’s daughters. If a producer saves 25 percent of each bull’s heifers (seven head per year) over a five-year period, that will be 35 daughters in production with a difference in total weaning weight of 64 pounds or $90 (64 x $1.40 per pound). This is a fairly small financial advantage for Bull B, but an advantage nonetheless.

Sire Selection – An Investment in Your Future

ME EPD (Maintenance Energy) Very little difference is observed in maintenance energy between these two bulls’ daughters. Bull B’s daughters might cost an extra $10 to $20 per head per year to maintain. This is small compared to the extra value created by Bull B, and would not be an important consideration in which bull to purchase unless ranch feed resources are extremely limited. Carcass Value Traits Some producers do not care much about the importance of carcass traits, but they should. Those who don’t consider carcass traits important will likely be discounted in the near future. With the nation’s cowherd expanding, huge losses in our nation’s feedyards, and limited harvest space in packing plants, we will see increased value-added opportunity for high-end carcass cattle. And it all starts with genetics. Cattle feeders can already earn significant grid premiums on superior carcass cattle which is leading them to offer differentiated bids between high-value feeder cattle and those that are average or below average. Producers selling feeder calves or yearlings need to pay attention to carcass EPDs and RAAA’s GridMaster Index. When focusing on long term success, you must consider your herd’s reputation and the success of the cattle feeder who you hope comes back year after year to bid aggressively on your cattle. Cattle feeders have good memories. They try hard to never to make a bad decision twice. Your cattle must stay healthy and perform well or they will buy them once and never come back. That’s not the reputation you want, so health, growth potential and carcass value traits all matter a great deal. MARB (Marbling), REA (Ribeye Area) and CW (Carcass Weight) Carcass EPDs are a little more difficult to wrap your mind around and explain in financial terms. Top Dollar Angus utilizes a carcass value model that converts EPD differences into dollar terms for easy comparison. The Marbling EPD difference between Bull A and Bull B is 1.05 (105 points) of a USDA marbling score, favoring Bull B. Using typical assumptions for the Choice/Select spread and other market factors, this marbling difference results in an estimated $48-per-head advantage for Bull B’s progeny. Higher marbling scores lead to higher quality grades, more premium Choice carcasses, and larger grid premiums. REA EPD is ribeye area in square inches. Bull B’s progeny have an advantage that is estimated to be worth an extra $10 per head versus the progeny of Bull A, using the Top Dollar Angus carcass value model. Ribeye area effects yield grade, which is an important part of the valuing system in virtually all grids. The CW EPD is easier to understand as it represents carcass weight in pounds. Bull B’s CW EPD is 24 pounds higher than Bull A. At a carcass-based price of $172 per cwt (equivalent to $110 per cwt live), the genetically driven carcass weight advantage provided by Bull B is a little over $41 per head. In total, we would expect the carcass value of these two bulls’ progeny would differ by nearly $100 per head favoring Bull B ($48 from improved marbling + $10 from better muscling + $41 from heavier carcass weights = $99 per head). Do the math here on just 20 head per year over five years, and the total value difference adds up to $9,900. Summary Based on the figures we compared, we can easily say that Bull B is well worth his extra cost. Over the life of a bull – whether you sell feeders or retain ownership through the feedyard – it’s important to spend some time and look at the investment that a single bull contributes to your operation.

We showed a $3,780 added value to selling a bawling calf, a $4,875 added value to selling yearlings, and a potential for $9,900 in added value at harvest over the life of a single bull. Don’t misunderstand – success in the cow-calf business still requires females with outstanding maternal abilities. But with today’s advancement in genetics and technology, you can have it all by finding sires that excel in all areas. South Carolina State Fair Open Show – Oct. 21, 2016 Junior Show – Oct. 22, 2016 Columbia, South Carolina

Several young South Carolina cattle producers have been promoting Red Angus cattle all over the state of South Carolina during the summer and fall of 2016. Recently, these Red Angus enthusiasts met at the 2016 South Carolina State Fair in Columbia, South Carolina, for the final contest of the 2016 show season. Jared Carnes of Iva, South Carolina, exhibited Bent Creek MS Redman 47C as the Senior Champion and Grand Champion Female in the Open Show division while Cody Clary of Saluda, South Carolina, led Bull Hill Ellie Mae 5349 to Calf Champion and Reserve Champion honors. Cody’s three heifer calf entries also garnered enough points to earn the Premier Exhibitor title in the Open Show. Jessica Mullens of Iva, South Carolina, exhibited the Grand Champion Bull in the Open Show with LM Lightning 1502, and she also led her Late Junior Yearling entry, AWFM Stella 129C, to the Junior Champion

female honors. Allison Harman of Leesville, Soth Carolina, led Bull Hill Alexis 4017 to the Reserve Sr. Champion female award. Judge Mike McGuire of Waverly, Alabama, was very complimentary of all the participants and their cattle. The junior Red Angus show followed on Saturday, Oct. 22, and Dr. John Rayfield of Lubbock, Texas, evaluated the cattle and young people. At the end of the day, Judge Rayfield selected Bull Hill Bessie 5340 as his Grand Champion and Calf Champion Female. The January 2016 heifer calf was shown by Ashlyn Clary, who teamed up with her brother, Cody, who showed the Reserve Calf Champion, Bull Hill Ellie Mae 5349.
