Market Reinforces Value of Red Angus Heifers As I sit here writing this commentary in late August for the October ARA Magazine, I have to remind myself that even though it’s well over 90 degrees outside, weaning time is fast approaching, and soon pot loads of steers will be heading for the feedlots. Ranchers will sort their heifer calves and choose their replacements. Will the remaining cut of heifers follow their steer mates to the feedlot? Or will the better end of those heifers be developed and bred next spring? In late August I attended Superior’s Bighorn Classic Sale in Sheridan, Wyoming, to support several of my customers as they marketed their 2016 calf crop. Prices were a few dollars back of where they were earlier this summer for nearly all classes of livestock – with one exception: Red Angus replacement-quality heifers. Many of these replacement-quality heifers brought over $1,000 per head. Compared to the last two years, this doesn’t sound that impressive. But compared to the rest of history, that is a pretty high number! One producer sold his 550-pound steers for $150 per cwt and the 535-pound heifer mates for $187.50 per cwt! So much for selling the heifers for $10 to 15 back from the steers! The same thing happened over and over with many reputation producers seeing similar results. Why is this happening? I think that most of the commercial and seedstock producers alike reading this magazine already know the answer. They are selling high because Red Angus females are THE most-favored female in the industry!

6 American Red Angus Magazine n October 2016

This brings me to my next question: How does the producer (either commercial or registered) decide which heifers to keep and which ones to market? How do we decide if the heifers we are going to market are of replacement quality? The old triedand-true method that has worked for generations – picking the ones that look or perform the best – has served us fairly well. However, I think all of us have had a beautiful heifer that never quite lived up to her expectations. Similarly, I think we have all had a heifer that barely made the cut at weaning that went on to be one of our best cows and stayed in the herd for 10 to 12 years. Current technology provides us with a great way to identify these differences at weaning time, and that is genomic testing. Sure there is a cost associated with testing, but it is nowhere near the cost of keeping a heifer for another two years until she weans her first calf and, let’s face it, most of us will keep her another year just to make sure! Commercial producers can make use of Red Navigator for $25 per head, and registered producers can get a full genomic profile for $48 per head in the GGP-LD panel which includes parentage along with OS and MA testing. Red Angus females are in great demand! We have some fantastic tools available to help us to keep the right replacements or to help us to market our heifers at a premium. As always, it’s a great time to be a Red Angus breeder! n

The Curse of Being Average Whether fulltime or part-time, running cows for a living has never been easy. The work load is large and too often profit margins are small. There are good years, like 2014 and 2015, which were record-setting for cow-calf profitability. Most of the time, however, positive margins are not so easily banked.

tion is stiff, average is okay. Many of us own pickups that are average for horsepower and towing capacity. That is acceptable because most full-size trucks built in that past five to 10 years can help get a lot of work done, be it hauling a load of posts, pulling a gooseneck down the road and performing other tasks.

During the past two decades, approximately 200,000 U.S. beef cow operations have exited the business – a decline of 22 percent or slightly more than 1 percent per year. There are many reasons why this trend occurred, but the largest factor was financial. Average and below-average producers broke even or lost money. Many chose to permanently leave the business.

But we can’t say that for the commercial cow-calf business. Being average is not going to work well here. There is no long-term profitability in it. Being an average cow-calf operator is something to be avoided in every way possible. Being average, in fact, can position the farm or ranch only a couple bad years (or bad breaks) away from insolvency.

This brings us to what might be called the “Curse of Being Average.” Ranking in the middle or finding oneself at the ‘mean’ is acceptable in numerous situations, just not with beef cattle. When my daughter Erin entered medical school some years back, a professor wisely counseled her class not to be concerned if they found themselves in the middle of the bell curve for the first time in their lives. When the competi-

Profiling Average and Better Than Average Consider the table below, which presents a simplified economic model for a commercial cow-calf enterprise. There are four main production and cost variables that determine the financial outcome for every operation. These are cash expenditures per cow, weaned calf crop percentage, average weaning weight and average calf sales price.

Association Commentary The first three of these variables (lines 1 through 3) are combined to estimate the breakeven cost of production (line 4). Then we bring in the average sales price (line 5) to calculate gross profit margin (lines 6 and 7). The column labeled Average presents the 2016 situation for an average cowcalf business. Despite calf prices remaining relatively high, being Average this year yields little or no profit. Breaking even is about all there is for an average producer. His unit production costs are right up there equal to the sale price of his calves. Being average is anything but exciting this year. Contrast that result to the Better column in the table, which represents a better-than-average cow-calf herd. Costs per cow are lower than average, reproductive rates are a couple percentage points better, and wean-

ing weights are moderately heavier. Plus, this operation captures a dimehigher calf sale price (despite heavier weights) due to producing premium, value-added calves coupled with a superior marketing program. Being better than average in key categories results in a $208 gross profit per cow. This is obviously a more desirable outcome. While the Average producer breaks even, the Better producer has another positive year. Being better than average requires attentiveness and commitment to many areas of the cow-calf enterprise. Cost control is critically important, but so is making sure cows have adequate nutrition all year long. The best producers are often those who find less expensive ways to accomplish the same tasks as their higher-spending counterparts. Marketing must also be a year-around effort. Good marketing starts with an understanding of the

10 American Red Angus Magazine n October 2016

practices and programs for which buyers pay a premium, such as VAC45, FCCP-tagged and Top Dollar Angus-enrolled calves. The next step is aligning your calf crop to fit those premium-oriented markets. Both genetics and management play a role. Another key point is that strong financial results are impossible without the right cow. She must be a versatile female that contributes favorably both on the input and output sides of the enterprise. She must also provide beneficial genetics that will help the calf crop sell at the top of the market. With strong maternal and valueadded calf traits, Red Angus females are very capable of meeting these needs. Red Angus can help avoid the “Curse of Being Average and contribute to profitable cow-calf production, even when the market is less accommodating. n

Marketing Update

Marketing Programs Bolster Stability

October finds most of us in the middle of weaning, vaccinating, pregnancy checking and marketing our 2016 calf crop. As we watch the volatility of today’s cattle market, it becomes paramount to MARKET our calves, not just sell them. Red Angus marketing programs are designed to help you do just that. As you process your calves, please consider enrolling them in one of RAAA’s marketing programs. Red Angus-sired calves qualify for the Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program, and calves sired by HybRED bulls are eligible for the Allied Access program. The USDA-approved genetic, age and source guarantee of the FCCP “yellow tag” and the age and source guarantee of the AA “green tag” have been proven to add value in the marketplace. Enrollment into the FCCP and AA programs is easy and FREE. Simply call RAAA and Chessie Mitchell, tag program coordinator, will assist you in enrollment and answer any questions you have. Tag cost is only 99¢ per tag for dangle tags. These tags are a real return on investment when marketing your calves.

Below you will find a listing of auction markets, dates and contact information for those barns holding sales specifically for FCCP- and AA-tagged and Red Angus-influenced cattle. As you plan your marketing strategy, we encourage you to contact these auctions and visit with their staffs to achieve the best plan and top value for your high-quality, Red Angus-influenced feeder cattle. For those choosing to retain ownership of your Red Angus and Red Angus-influenced cattle, the FCCP tag is your ticket to premium grids through the Tyson Choice+ and G.O. Red Grids. These grids are specifically designed to capture extra value on loads of finished cattle. Contact anyone on the Marketing Team for more information. Speaking of top loads of finished cattle, we are excited to recognize this year’s Grid Master winners (page 16). Eighteen loads of cattle from 12 producers qualified for this prestigious award. Congratulations to this year’s winners! These 1,365 head of Red Angus-influenced cattle reaffirm that Red Angus genetics will excel in feeding programs across the country. Fed in five states and 10 feedlots, the ability of Red Angus to grade in an efficient manner is truly impressive. The Marketing Team looks forward to assisting you in successfully marketing your calves.

Marketing Update

RAAA Recognizes Carcass Excellence Through Grid Master Award

The Grid Master Awards recognize excellence in commercial cattle and the cattle feeding industry. The award is earned by those firms who have successfully combined superior Red Angus genetics, feeding management skills and precise marketing to achieve success with the harvest of a superior beef carcass.

Both conventionally and naturally fed cattle are eligible.

To be named a Grid Master, the entry must be Red Angus or Red Angus-influenced cattle enrolled in the RAAA’s Feeder Calf Certification Program or Allied Access tag program,

and must achieve a specified level of carcass excellence.

Conventionally fed Red Angus cattle must be marketed in lots of at least 30 head, reach a minimum of 85 percent Choice and Prime, have a maximum of 5 percent Yield Grade 4s and a minimum grid score of 100.

Naturally fed Red Angus cattle must also be marketed in lots of at least 30 head, achieve 90 percent Choice and Prime, with a maximum of 10 percent Yield Grade 4s and a minimum grid score of 100. Following are this year’s Grid Master Award winners and data regarding their cattle. n

Member Services Update Submit Data Early It is never too early to submit data, especially if a deadline needs to be met in the near future. The process can be started with the minimum data points and additional information can be added later. If weaning weights haven’t been taken, pre-registrations can be accomplished to start the process. These are called “incomplete registrations.”

The next National Cattle Evaluation will occur at the end of October. Fall Herd Inventory Evaluation If you have cows that are classified as Fall Herd Inventory, make sure that these females are still on your active inventory. If you no longer have this animal or she has moved to the Spring calving season, please either give her a disposal code or reason code for no calf being reported. It is important to update this information yearly as this determines the billing for Total Herd Reporting. Fall Herd Inventory will be billed in December. Report Spring or Fall Heifer Exposure Heifer Exposure is important and easily accessible data to submit. This data in not mandatory but it is a key component in the Heifer Pregnancy EPD (HPG). We ask that you please take the time to report this information. What are the data reporting components? 1) Breeding In and Out Date or AI Date 2) Was the animal exposed? Yes or No 3) Management Group Designation – indicates the management group 4) Disposal Information – Disposal codes are available for heifers that are not being kept in the herd. To report Heifer Exposure Data, go to REDSPro Herd Mangement/My Reports. Select “Group” on left-hand side of page. A default group can be selected or a custom group created before report is created. Figure 1.

Then select “Heifer Exposure Data Report” on the righthand side of page.

Then click “Generate Report” at the bottom of the page. The report will be viewable on the screen and then can be downloaded. Updates can be made via an Excel spreadsheet or printed and hand written, then sent to the Association (Figure 1). Tutorials are still available as learning tools. Take advantage of these helpful videos and/or hard copy tutorials to teach the ins and outs of REDSPro. The tutorials address the following: • How to submit data (birth, weaning, yearling, etc.) • How to create groups • How to generate and create reports • How to access billing history

DNA Updates As deadlines start to form for upcoming events, make sure that DNA samples are submitted to RAAA early. Standard turnaround time for processing samples takes 15 to 20 business days. 24 American Red Angus Magazine ■ October 2016

Ramm Hits Home Run with Red Angus

by Brenda Black for American Red Angus Magazine

Along the Elkhorn River near Atkinson, Nebraska, just 10 miles from where he grew up ranching with his father and brothers, Jim Ramm builds winning teams year in and out. He formed a minor league of his own in 1973, developing heifers from young females purchased from his dad who had been marketing bred heifers since the 1960s, a tradition Ramm has carried on for over 40 years. Ramm uses only yearling and 2-year-old bulls for natural service, selecting for calving ease, pedigree and disposition.

32 American Red Angus Magazine â– October 2016

Ramm kept some of those original heifers back and grew the team to 500 cows. On his own ranch since 1992, those 500 spring and fall commercial Angus cows got whittled down to zero. He started hitting for the fence filling their vacant positions with Red Angus and he was back at home plate developing heifers fulltime.

Recruiting for Training Camp

The Ramm Family (L to R): Austyn, Kendell, Diane, Jim, Helen, Kristen and Rick (Front) Reese and Adric

The exclusive heifer development operation annually manages around 300 head of spring- and fall-calving females. They arrive at training camp as 600-pound weanlings and leave as bred females by the end of baseball season. The process for locating and procuring high-quality players for Ramm's beef team each year relies on his good eye and expertise. Ramm may travel three states to recruit and prefers to deal without a middle man. “I'll go out in November and December making calls to ranchers in Nebraska, Montana or South Dakota,” Ramm said. “I want a good look at the cows and heifers. Then I deal and get the heifers I want.” Two years ago, for the first time his picks were 100 percent red. This year, a few black baldies are back in the mix. “Sometimes you don't get to buy the cattle you want, so you just got to reprogram a little bit,” the Sandhills rancher said. “If I buy at auction, I have usually seen the calves at the ranch, and the only way to get them is by going and sitting on a seat and bidding. I'm not going to just sit in the sale barn and try to fill a pasture. If I can't get the quality I want, I don't play the game.”

Heifers are synchronized, AI bred, then exposed to natural-service Red Angus bulls. Ramm is able to sort and market heifers according to their ultrasound expected calving dates. American Red Angus Magazine ■ October 2016 33

Ramm Hits Home Run with Red Angus The Play

After recruiting the best prospects, real play begins in January when he takes delivery. New arrivals are backgrounded on a ration fixed for gain of 1 to 1.5 pounds per day. “The goal is to have the heifers weighing between 775 to 800 pounds when they go to grass at the end of May,” Ramm said. Breeding typically begins the end of May and calving starts the first week of March. Ramm follows a protocol for a 14day CIDR, then waits four days after AI to turn in naturalservice bulls that run for 50 to 55 days. At the 45- to 50-day window after bulls are pulled, he ultrasounds and sorts heifers into three categories – AI, early bull bred and late bull bred. “We've had great success with only about 5 percent in that late category,” he said.

Customer satisfaction is an important part of Ramm’s business, and repeat buyers make their selections early with most of the heifers sold by the end of October.

AI-bred heifers are batting in the 60s; one year they settled at 72 percent. “We're pretty happy with that,” said Ramm.

Ramm uses bulls as yearlings and 2-year-olds. While still young, he merchandises them so they can “go on down the road and help someone else,” he said.

“Red Angus are generally short-gestation cattle,” Ramm said. “A lot of times all the AI calves are done calving by their due date.” He also gives calving-ease Red Angus bulls credit for contributing to the light weight, hearty calves that hit the ground.

“I like to keep younger bulls on heifers as they're just easier on them,” Ramm said. “Older bulls can get too heavy for heifers.” He'll do a lot of background research on pedigrees and relies heavily on his suppliers' recommendations.

Ramm Hits Home Run with Red Angus “We also do pelvic checks and ultrasound to do everything possible to make it a good experience for our customers,” Ramm said. “Calving-ease genetics seem to be in the Red Angus breed and good maternal traits are common in the mammas. Their strong udder quality and classic fleshing ability are the foundations for an excellent cowherd. Being a Black Angus guy all my life, this was a new change for me. Though I don't have any plans for getting back into a cow-calf operation, if I ever did, I would do it with Red Angus.”

Six years later, he is sourcing Red Angus heifers from several different repeat suppliers. They know when Ramm, a former University of Nebraska varsity livestock judging team member, comes calling, he's likely to select from the heart of their herd to secure replacement prospects.

A friend convinced Ramm of the merits of the breed a few years back.

On the other end of the spectrum are repeat customers who are “on to” Ramm as well. Every year, his complete heifer line-up is parceled out to new teams by the end of October. “Most all of them are gone and sold by Halloween – it's my treat to myself,” Ramm joked.

Red Angus All Stars

“I liked what she had,” Ramm said. “The disposition of the cows, their udder quality and the uniformity of the heifers were impressive. I ended up buying several of her calves even though they were younger than I really wanted. I found the market to be very receptive of the Red Angus females. The more time I'm with these heifers, the more I like their fleshing ability and maternal qualities. And my customers love their disposition!”

“My flavor has stayed the same since the beginning,” Ramm said. “A lot of times I cut their herds deep enough that they cut me off for a year or two so they'll have some for their own replacements. So I have to rotate to be able to get the good heifers. They are on to me.”

“My customers like to get the heifers home early,” he said. “They can get them on their feed program and acclimated to their environment before they calve. It's helpful for building up immunities and having that defense in the colostrum when a calf gets his first meal.”

Ramm hand selects high-quality heifers he procures from reputation ranches in a three-state area.

Ramm Hits Home Run with Red Angus Beef Industry League

Ramm's no-nonsense approach to buying and selling heifers made him a heavy hitter on the Red Angus Association of America’s BrainTrust panel in 2015. Ideally that year, the focus for helping producers map Red Angus' competitive position within the industry dealt with replacement heifers. While Ramm enlightened others on his strategies, he said he learned much as well.

vocational agriculture and advised the FFA chapter before ranching fulltime. He later served as president of the Nebraska Cattlemen as well as president of the Nebraska Cattlemen Research and Education Foundation. He measures his time in leadership with NC as priceless when it comes to making connections. “I use lessons from my NC and teaching experiences every day,” he said.

“The BrainTrust event really broadened my horizons,” Ramm said. “It was a huge honor to sit alongside such notables as Patsy Houghton who pioneered the 'Professional Heifer Development' concept at Heartland Cattle Co. near McCook, Nebraska.”

“I can't put into words what the networking did for me in sourcing cattle and building relationships,” he said. “In 2012, we had that big drought in Nebraska. We had more heifers bred that year than ever before. I'm sitting here in July with all these bred heifers and nobody has any feed. It gave me some gray hairs. But because of people I'd met through NC, I was able to find all those heifers a new home.”

That same year, other panelists included Mike Kasten, founding president of the highly successful Missouri Show-Me-Select Heifer Corporation and a BIF Commercial Cattlemen of the Year winner; Lance Zimmerman, an analyst at CattleFax; and Matt Spangler, an associate professor and Extension beef genetics specialist at the University of Nebraska. Ramm’s experience goes beyond his heifer development enterprise. The first few years out of college, he taught

Fan Club

Ramm makes it a habit to be a resource to his customers in similar fashion, and refers them frequently to the RAAA's marketing programs found at http://redangus.org/marketing. He also recommends that they retain Red Angus females to build their own teams.

Ramm backgrounds heifers for a gain of 1 to 1.5 pounds per day with a goal weight between 775 to 800 pounds when they go to grass at the end of May.

38 American Red Angus Magazine ■ October 2016

Ramm Hits Home Run with Red Angus “Right now, my customers are mostly commercial cattlemen who are happy with feeder steers or heifers,” Ramm said, “but because of the AI program that I am using, I've encouraged them to think about keeping back some females as replacements or to give me a chance to buy them. There is a market for top calves out of these programs.” Ramm, as well as anyone, can bear witness to customer satisfaction. He sees it on their faces when potential buyers come to take a look.

Then the wife spoke up and said, 'The truck will hold 40, so why don't we take all of them?' We got them in the corral and sorted off the AI-breds and down the road they went.” Sometimes, Ramm said, deals are made sight-unseen, and he told of one such occasion he'll not soon forget. The call came from Gillette, Wyoming, the day before preg checks, followed by a second call the day after with a request to “buy all of them,” a hundred-plus head. “I said, 'Really? Are you serious?' And I told him my price,” Ramm said.

“In the pasture the heifers will usually gather around, giving us an opportunity to walk through and evaluate them,” he said. “The buyer gets a feel for the heifers and sees the bulls they're bred to which gives them a good foundation on which to make their decision.”

“By noon on Friday morning that same week, we had agreed to a price and this was the middle of September,” he said. With the promise to pick them up the following week, Ramm had been wired a down payment before sunset.

A couple of years ago, a gentleman and his wife came and looked through the herd. “They wanted 20 AI heifers,” Ramm said, “but while they were here, their son called and told them they were going to have more pasture. On the spot, they decided to take 30 home.

“A week later on a Saturday, this young man and his hired hand came to look at their purchase for the first time,” Ramm said. “They pulled into my yard in a flatbed pickup with a camper tied on back. Both long and lean, one of them had a little derby hat and sport coat.

Red Angus females are in demand for their good maternal traits, strong udder quality and classic fleshing.

Ramm Hits Home Run with Red Angus The other wore a sport coat and western hat. They stayed a couple of hours, then went home and said they'd send trucks. They were happy as clams with the heifers. And those heifers were headed to a 50,000-acre ranch where they run one cow to 40 acres.” Now that's a home run in the world series of heifer development! Perhaps Ramm will hear one day how his hand-picked heifers performed in their wide-open Wyoming spaces. He may even get a picture in the mail from that lanky cattleman, like the one he received from a Kentucky customer with a note about his pleasure with Ramm's Red Angus heifers. Who knows, some day, maybe there will be Red Angus trading cards that immortalize their performance. Until then, Jim Ramm will keep recruiting only the best for his heifer team. ■

Research Validates Red Angus as Most-Favored Female by Trinity Lewis for American Red Angus Magazine

Ranchers across the country have long recognized the value of Red Angus females as the foundation of a profitable cowherd. Now, independent research validates those years of cattle production experience with tangible data proving the Red Angus heifer’s worth.

Research Actualities Esther McCabe, et al., of Kansas State University, lead a study that confirmed Red Angus are the most-favored female in the industry. McCabe and her team compiled five years’ worth of pricing data from Superior Livestock Auction, comparing 13,804 lots of heifer calves totaling over 1.2 million head that sold in 116 video auctions.

The research team evaluated the effects of independent vari-

ables on the sale price of heifer calves that fell into six different breed composition groups: English, English crosses, English-Continental crosses, Black Angus-sired out of dams with no Brahman influence, Red Angus-sired out of dams with no Brahman influence, and Brahman-influenced. They deduced that Red Angus-sired heifer calves bring $5 to $9 more per hundredweight than all other breed types.

Research Validates Red Angus as Most-Favored Female Over the years, stockmen have voted with their checkbooks, purchasing heifers they know will bring profitability to their ranching businesses – and Red Angus females are their most-favored choice. Seller Satisfaction A devout believer in the Red Angus breed, Jack Bickel of Firesteel, South Dakota, has been in the ranching industry his entire life. He was raised on his family’s ranch with an all-Hereford herd but after finally convincing his dad, Bickel introduced the first Red Angus bulls to their operation in the late 1970s. “We had the chance to bring the reds home as long as we promised that we would only use the bulls on our heifers. In the fall when we weaned, the heifers' calves were as heavy or heavier than the mature cows’ straight-bred Hereford calves because of the hybrid vigor." Bickel sells his calves at the Red Angus Feeder Calf Sale in Mobridge, South Dakota, each October, and his heifer calves have been known to lead the sale. Bickel expressed a deep appreciation to Red Angus breeders and leadership for their dedication to raise superior genetics with performance-minded production. He noted that Total Herd Reporting has also played a pivotal role in maintaining the breed’s integrity. “We have so much data at our disposal that it makes the reliability of numbers so much more accurate. My hat is off to the people at Red Angus who give the

48 American Red Angus Magazine ■ October 2016

breed good solid direction and foundation.” Confident that K-State’s research serves as an indicator for future growth of the breed, Bickel said he’s not surprised. “The Red Angus breeders I’ve been around since the 1970s have a high degree of integrity. The breed will always prosper if we continue to do things with others who have integrity.” Admittedly, markets across the board are down compared to the past couple of years but Bickel has faith that the Red Angus breed has arrived at a place of market trend and popularity through proven genetics that producers will fare well even without the historical highs seen in recent years. “There will always be people out there who are willing to pay a premium for good genetics, especially for good females. Where the RAAA is continuing to add to their database about genetics, they are always going to bring some kind of premium no matter how high the market is or how low the market is.” He relayed that this is a pattern that has been proven over time on numerous occasions. Worth the Premium About 25 miles west of Kansas City, Kansas, Kirk Sours calls the fescue country of Tonganoxie, Kansas, home. Sours manages the Tailgate Ranch, and is complimentary of the breed for a variety of reasons. Like Bickel, he finds that they adapt especially well to his local environment.

Research Validates Red Angus as Most-Favored Female Since about 2000, Sours has continually purchased Red Angus heifers from LaCrosse Livestock Market in LaCrosse, Kansas, to develop and sell to his clients.

cattle to the herd, they were focused on frame moderation. “When we started using Red Angus we started seeing the benefits of drawing those sizes down,” Sours said.

Keeping a close eye on the market, Sours says that the Red Angus reputation has captured the attention of buyers across the board. “There’s a popularity contest and then there’s a trend. The trend line is going to be long term and right now the trend is toward Red Angus. People who have experienced the benefits of Red Angus are already sold on them. Others observing their success are going to be coming into it.”

Red Angus cattle aren’t the first to take center-stage in the cattle industry. Other breeds have rose in popularity but then lost steam after a major marketing campaign played out. Bickel said that the solid foundation established by RAAA’s founding members, combined with adhering to a strict culling protocol, will secure Red Angus’ position of leadership in the marketplace.

Sours relayed that it’s not unusual for their operation to sell out of heifers before the demand dies down, and he’s confident that the benefits of Red Angus far outweigh other breeds. “There’s nothing prettier than Red Angus cows on a green pasture,” he said light heartedly.

Sours is excited at the continuing interest in the breed. “The competition for these red females has really stiffened. That’s a tell-tale sign that there are more people trying to get those good Red Angus females. We are beginning to see enough red cattle around that it causes other people to want to raise Red Angus, too. That long-term trend is what we want, and I see that trend moving even more towards Red Angus cattle.”

“For us, the disposition of the females is the real hook, especially when you mix them in with a Continental breed. They really shine in the feed yard and on the rail.” Before changing their operation over to its current status, Sours’ ranch was a stocker calf operation, changing over to cow-calf in about 1990. When they first introduced Red Angus

50 American Red Angus Magazine ■ October 2016

Both Sours and Bickel are confident that the momentum of the Red Angus breed is here for the long-haul, and that the acceptance of the females – proven by market demand and production experience – is the gateway into a bright future for the Red Angus breed. ■

RAAA Releases Fall EPDs

Essential information for informed genetic selection

Making critical decisions about the future of your breeding program demands the very best tools and up-to-date information available. The Red Angus Association of America has released the 2016 Fall EPDs that evaluate traits from calving ease to performance to carcass merit. The suite of numbers includes tools to select cattle with optimum economic relevance such as stayability, heifer pregnancy and maintenance energy requirements. GridMaster and HerdBuilder indices offer a comprehensive tool to help cattlemen achieve their breeding goals. The Red Angus breed has been dedicated to Total Herd Reporting for two decades, creating an accurate database of Red Angus genetics and subsequently, EPDs trusted by ranchers. EPDs are displayed with their inbreed ranking percentile to assist cattle producers with their trait selection decisions. “With THR data, we are provided with comparisons between all animals in each contemporary group,” said Larry Keenan, RAAA director of breed improvement. “Since EPDs rely on measured variation within a contemporary group, THR provides for reliable EPDs and faster gains in EPD accuracy by ensuring that the variation in the performance of each calf is counted.” Red Angus’ strong foundation of THR data combined with genomic data from high-density DNA tests provides EPDs with unsurpassed reliability. The information from the genomic data can be as informative as a bull’s first calf crop or a cow’s lifetime production record. And, since the genomic data is incorporated directly into the EPDs, cattle producers don’t have to learn how to interpret new data. The information will be delivered in the form of higher accuracy EPDs. For more information on EPDs, visit the “Genetics” page at RedAngus.org. Producers can also access individual animals’ EPDs and breed percentiles, or calculate the projected EPDs of specific matings on the website. n

Ingredients for Improvement

Data collection increases confidence, accuracy and reliability of EPDs by Halla Pfeiff, DNA/Breed Improvement Projects Coordinator

“Without continual growth and progress, such words as improvement, achievement and success have no meaning.” – Benjamin Franklin Benjamin Franklin hit the nail on the head; growth and progress have to be on the mind continuously for an impact to be made. I assume that every person is alike and is constantly pondering the thought, “How do I increase?” Or even more specific questions such as: “How I do increase my weaning weights? Does my bull provide what I want to achieve with my cowherd? Do I have enough resources to increase the size of my cowherd?” These are just a sliver of the questions cattle producers ask during the daily routine to improve their short- and long-term goals. The only way to track the progress of improvement is to collect data and then compare to previously collected data points. EPDs would be the best-collaborated data sets to compare. To better understand how EPDs work and change, think of them as something you understand well. I like to envision all data being collected and reported as a recipe for my favorite dessert, Mountain Dew Apple Fritters. Mountain Dew Apple Fritters (EPDs)

and cinnamon, and pour over apples. Pour can of Mountain Dew over all. Bake 45 minutes at 350 degrees (can use a Dutch oven). Serve with vanilla ice cream. (National Cattle Evaluation) A recipe only tastes and looks desirable if all ingredients are there. Now, apply your “recipe” to your operation. Are you missing an ingredient? Does your “recipe” meet the standard set forth? I apply my “recipe” to the entire Red Angus breed and pose the question, “Which ingredients (data sets) are lacking that can help the Red Angus breed grow?” This question could be considered a Catch-22 because all of the data has room for growth. Also, all data sets are equally important factors in the calculations of EPDs. However, with that being said, three sets of data have significant room for improvement. These include Heifer Exposure, Carcass and Feed Intake Data. Heifer Exposure Data Heifer Exposure Data is the easiest set of information to collect and report as breeders write down this information when they turn out bulls for breeding. This is only for yearling heifers 9 to 17 months of age. What data does the breeder report to the Association? • Breeding Season Dates (beginning and ending dates or AI date) • Was the animal exposed AI or to a bull? Yes or No • Contemporary Group Designation • Disposal Information (if applicable)

2 cans Crescent Rolls (Calving Ease) 3-4 Tart Apples (Weaning Weight) 1-1/2 Cups Sugar (Heifer Pregnancy) 1/2 Cup Butter (Yearling Weight) 1 Teaspoon Cinnamon (Carcass Data) 1 (12 oz.) can of Mountain Dew (Feed Intake Data)

Why is heifer exposure important? This information is used to calculate the Red Angus Heifer Pregnancy (HPG) EPD. This EPD predicts the probability of heifers conceiving to calve at 2 years of age. Heifer Pregnancy (HPG) EPD serves as the foundation cowherd trait.

Peel and slice apples into 16 pieces. Roll each apple slice in on section of Crescent roll. Place rolled slices in pan in two rows, put extras along side. Melt butter, add sugar

Carcass Data Carcass data – also known as kill data – can be more complicated because a third or even fourth party is involved.

60 American Red Angus Magazine ■ October 2016

Ingredients for Improvement This carcass data is different from the more statistics referenced to as ultrasound data. Kill data helps us further strengthen the reliability of carcass traits such as carcass weight, yield grade, ribeye, marbling and fat. What data must be report to the Association for implementation into the database? • Registration Number (if applicable) • Feeder Calf Certification Program Tag Number (if known) • Sire or Dam Registration Number (must have at least one known) • Date of Birth • Sex (steer or heifer) • Kill Date • Hot Carcass Weight • Backfat • Marbling Score • Ribeye Area • Kidney, Pelvic and Heart Fat The best way to receive such information is to retain ownership of these animals. Also, it is very important to

62 American Red Angus Magazine ■ October 2016

let your cattle buyer know that you wish to receive this data, so that the proper communication can be made at time of processing. A template is available to report this data to us on the website or you can request it from the National Office. Feed Intake Data Feed Intake Data is the data set that the Red Angus Association of America lacks the most, but yet it has a large impact in the future of the breed. I would mention that feed intake data, which measures individual animal feed consumption, is the critical piece in determining feed conversion, which is a major driver of profitability in the feedyard. What does RAAA need? • Test duration: On-test date and off-test date • Contemporary Group • Standard Feed Intake Data: - Registration Number - Average Daily Gain - Average Dry Matter Intake

Ingredients for Improvement Due to the increased need for this data, the RAAA has developed a program to help with the cost. This program is called the Feed Intake GGP-LD Trade. RAAA will trade a GGP-LD DNA test for the Feed Intake Data on a per-animal basis. However, there are a few standards that have to be met to be eligible for this trade. These standards include: • At least two sires represented in the contemporary group; and • At least three progeny per sire, but five is preferred. If you would like to collect Feed Intake Data but need contact information for a collection facility or would like more information, please contact Larry Keenan at larry@redangus.org or 940-387-3502, Ext 12 . Overall, for a meal (breed) to be complete, each dish (“recipe” or operation) must be successful. We encourage each operation to collect as much data as possible on every animal. We also understand this increases the amount of time spent collecting data, but most importantly, by accumulating this information it increases the confidence, accuracy and reliability of each EPD generated. n

Oregon Calves Bring ‘Top Dollar’ at Superior’s Video Royale Sale

Skinner Ranches

by Trinity Lewis for American Red Angus Magazine

The desert country of southeast Oregon is home to the Skinner Ranches where Bob Skinner and sons, Si and Mike, run commercial Red Angus cows. The Skinners sold their calves in early August at the Video Royale Superior Livestock Auction Sale in Winnemucca, Nevada, and employed Top Dollar Angus certification as part of their marketing plan. Bob Skinner relayed that in today’s cattle industry, remaining flexible and willing to try new strategies is imperative. Skinner first heard of Top Dollar Angus when the Oregon Cattleman’s Association invited them to an informative meeting on the topic. “My two boys are good cattlemen. They stay very in tune with EPDs and select good genetics, and that’s why we qualify for TDA. It’s been a natural fit. We haven’t had to do anything beyond what we were doing to get into the program.” Skinner explained good genetics and management practices allow their operation to easily qualify for marketing their cattle naturally as well. Public lands play a large role in the Skinners’ operation. During years with good moisture, they run their cattle on BLM rangeland for five months, and then on their land the other. They usually pull their calves 30 to 90 days prior to shipping, depending on the market.

“Our cattle sold very well,” Skinner stated, adding that, although it is easy to do, decisions shouldn’t be made based on one sale. “I’m not going to change the way I buy bulls.” With the elite genetic requirements to qualify for Top Dollar Angus, buyers are sure to continue to watch for the cream of the crop of the more-popularthan-ever Red Angus breed. Otley Brothers Harry and Dan Otley of Otley Brothers Ranch in southeast Oregon topped the market at the Video Royale Superior Livestock Auction. Otley Brothers’ cowcalf operation has been almost completely Red Angus since 1992. The brothers first decided to introduce Red Angus genetics for hybrid vigor and to eradicate cancer eye which had become prevalent in their herd. “We were headed more toward crossbreeding so we bought Red Angus bulls and have been with Red Angus ever since,” stated Harry Otley. Otley said their marketing goals are the same as any other producer – to get the highest amount they can for what they’ve raised. He described their marketing strategy as virtually all encompassing. “There’s a lot of marketing we do. We want our calves to be available to the widest market possible. We want to be available to the top-end, wholefoods market and we want our beef to be able to be exported easily.”

The Otleys pride themselves on using good bulls, so much so that they usually compete against seedstock producers at sales. Otley said that they easily qualified for the Top Dollar Angus program with 33 of their 35 sires meeting program requirements. Beyond buying top-quality bulls, the brothers go through a variety of vaccination protocols, keep their cattle on the natural market and wean for 45 days. Otleys primarily market through Superior Livestock Auction. With the combination of their genetics and the Red Angus market trend, Otleys have never had an issue with getting their calves sold for a good price. “I’ve been told by others that our calves are some of the easiest to sell,” he said. Otleys have a great reputation for good cattle. Still, they know it is important to be strategic in their marketing. “With the market getting tighter, I can’t pin our success on Top Dollar Angus but it certainly didn’t hurt our marketing efforts this year,” he said. The brothers sold their calves for $43.06 over the average for their perspective group, with a high premium of $75.19 for their 530-pound heifer calves. They plan to continue using Top Dollar Angus in the future. n

Better Contemporary Groups Make Better Technology Work Even Better by Marty Ropp, CEO, Business Development Specialist & Field Representative, Allied Genetic Resources

I know the title contains a lot of “betters,” but the statement is true. The old adage about “garbage in, garbage out” is absolutely correct and pertains to genetic improvement in a big way. It is the reason reporting data correctly and equitably is so important. If you are like me, you are absolutely ecstatic about the new BOLT system for calculating the next generation of improved and more accurate genetically advanced information. So much scientific advancement and hard work has gone into the new quantum leap program, and we all stand to benefit from that effort. Importance of Data Collection With the future in mind, I want to revisit the past a bit because this – and other newer technologies – still depend so much on breeder commitment to high-quality data collection and reporting. In fact, one could argue that reporting data may be more important now than ever before. Don’t be lulled by the promise of new technologies making life easier. DNA diagnostics demand huge amounts of new data for re-calibration and updating so they can be effective both today and in the future. Well-defined and reported contemporary-group information is still the backbone for the data systems we rely on to make better cattle and better beef. Discussions regarding contemporary group data are often overshadowed by dreams of do-it-all technology, and the sad tendency to revert to the simplistic use of raw, individual data to characterize performance and progress. The truth is, without quality contemporary group comparisons and evaluation, all the technology and marketing we use gives little hope of significant improvement or improved competitiveness. Equal Playing Field Think of contemporary groups simply as races – races that take place on thousands of farms and ranches each year. We report the results of those races to the Associa-

tion. They in turn evaluate the winners and losers, and report back to us which genetics won more races for more traits than others over a huge array of environments and situations. No sire will win every race, every time. No matter how sure we are that the results at our house are the only ones that count, different progeny rank and perform differently compared to their contemporaries in different situations. Sires that win far more often than they lose build value for specific traits. Those that come in below average repeatedly lose EPD value for those traits. This combined effort of technology and data reporting is like being able to ask every breeder in the world how their calves did. Remember that a sire can win and lose in different categories. It could win for growth and lose for carcass traits, or win for maternal value and lose for calving ease. The more race results reported from multiple herds, the more confident we become about the results of future races; and the higher the accuracy of the predictions of the trait we are trying to measure and or improve. Our system even accounts for mating bias and our own logical tendencies for preferential matings. Improved EPD Fair and honest races are the key to great and accurate genetic evaluation. That is why well-designed (fair) contemporary grouping is still the start and finish of great EPDs, and in turn maximizes genetic improvement. Having a lot of race results really helps, but the more reliable and well conducted those comparisons are, the better the data that is returned to breeders and the more powerful the genetic evaluation.

“In general, fair races are between calves of similar age, the same sex and always based on a similar chance to compete in the race.” 78 American Red Angus Magazine n October 2016

How then might we design and help guarantee “fair races?” If you look up the rules for contemporary grouping, they are quite specific as to time ranges, environment, sex and details that should be followed to get the most accurate and useful “race” results. If it is an “uphill race,” everyone has to run uphill. If weights are taken with the cattle full, they all need to be taken with the cattle full. If one group of cattle gets special treatment of any kind, they should not be compared against cattle that were not given special treatment or advantage. Environmental Influences The goal is to remove as much environment from the equation as possible and only measure the differences due to genetics. As breeders, we routinely add environmental noise to our programs for a lot of reasons, and it’s not a big issue for contemporary groups as long as we separate the groups into honest, fair races. Thirty animals broken into five well-planned contemporary groups can in fact be more informative than leaving 30 in one group even though some were creep fed, some had different pasture situations, one group got sick, etc. All of those are reasons to redefine groupings when your data is reported.

Most of the time we don’t think about it, but animals at a significant disadvantage due to environment should be dropped from the groups as well. Calves raised as twins are not compared to the average of the group for evaluation purposes because of the significant environmental disadvantage they have to single calves. A calf with a broken leg, chronically ill, or orphaned should be dropped from the group because their race was not “fair” or equitable genetically due to overriding environmental influences. Those calves should be ratioed separately and thus their 100-ratio value will not contribute to the genetic evaluation or EPDs for their sire, dam or other ancestors. One of the most overlooked contemporary group issues is pasture groups or units. From a “purist” point of view, different pasture or cow groups equal a different racecourse, and thus a different contemporary group. One of the more common circumstances where similar pasture situations can result in a different race is when evaluating fertility or Stayability. For example, a bull in one pasture failed to settle any cows and the one in an adjacent pasture did. If both pasture groups were erroneously reported as one contemporary group, the cows in the pasture with the bad bull would be the ones blamed for failure to conceive rather than the environment, even though in this case, the bull in that pasture was the culprit.

Better Contemporary Groups Make Better Technology Work Even Better

If reported correctly, as two contemporary groups, the genetics of those cows with the non-breeder bull would not be discounted for their longevity because their race was a poor one and everyone lost. Adjustment Factors Adjustment factors are there to help make races fairer. Just like you might give your child a head start in a race across the yard when they are young to make for a more “fair” race, an adjustment factor tries to make hard-to-compare data comparable. We add birth weights to heifers to make the weight more comparable to cows because it makes for a fairer genetic comparison race. We add weaning weight to the progeny of heifers because, in general, their first calf is the smallest they will wean, and for that reason it’s hard to compare or ratio against the progeny of the mature cows in their pasture. These adjustment factors may not be perfect for every situation and boy, do folks like to point that out. If you can prove through years of data that the first-calf heifer adjustments for weights in your herd are always way too high or way too low, then simply report your heifer progeny data as a single contemporary group of its own. It won’t hurt the genetic evaluation regardless of which choice you make. For instance, when the heifers are treated substantially differently than the cows, the calves should be reported as a separate contemporary group for more accurate data. The decision is based on what makes for the most-fair and equitable race. It is important to remember a few simple things when it comes to contemporary groupings. Once a contemporary group is broken up, it will not be put back together except in a few strange and isolated situations. There are rules for contemporary grouping, such as seasonal overlap protection, that may make your contemporary groups smaller than you remember reporting. In general, fair races are between calves of similar age, the same sex and always based on a similar chance to compete in the race. That way, the winners and losers will provide the best of information to the database and ultimately to the breeders who count on the value of the genetic information and EPDs. A lot of data from a lot of breeders always wins the day, but a lot of good data gets us where we all want to go a lot faster. Rethink your contemporary groupings and fair races for 2016 – make your data count! n 82 American Red Angus Magazine n October 2016

JRA Update

by Kacey Koester, JRA President, and Genna VanWye, JRA Second Vice President

Canadian Exchange Program

The Canadian Exchange Program is one of the many opportunities available for JRA members to explore agriculture throughout the nation as well as internationally. Every year, the JRA sponsors two members to attend their choice of the Canadian National Junior Showdown or the GOAL Conference. In exchange, two Canadian Junior Angus Association members attend the JRA Round-Up in June. This year, Rachel Davis of Montpelier, Virginia, and Kaitlyn Templeton of Clemmons, North Carolina, attended the Canadian National Junior Showdown July 28 to 30. If this experience interests you, visit the JRA website for more information at http://redangus.org/jra/programs.

JRA Members Travel Internationally

Receiving the American Canadian Exchange award was quite an experience for Junior Red Angus members Kaitlyn Templeton and Rachel Davis. They had a week backed with industry events, shows and much more. Upon arriving in Nova Scotia, Canada, Davis and Templeton were welcomed by the entire Canadian Junior Angus Association Board along with Belinda Wagner, CJAA Coordinator, and her husband, Rob Wagner. This exceptional group, along with the rest of the CJAA, was an extraordinary host. “They made us feel right at home,” stated Davis. “Brooke Bablitz, a two-time Round-Up attendee, helped them understand Canadian livestock judging terms and points of view, as well as describe other aspects of agriculture that they were not familiar with. One night, the entire group, which consisted of CJAA members from across Canada, enjoyed a boat ride in Halifax, Nova Scotia. “This was a great ice breaker for us,” said Templeton. “We

had the chance to meet juniors participating in Showdown and get to know individuals who would soon be our teammates.” Davis and Templeton did a great job representing JRA. They participated in many of the contests held during Showdown, including showmanship, team fitting, sales talk, photography, graphic design, livestock judging, literature, team cook-off and many more. “We want to extend a huge thank you to all of the juniors at Showdown who helped us find supplies and cattle to participate in these contests,” said Davis and Templeton. A crucial role of receiving the Canadian Exchange Award is to exchange ideas from our association with CJAA. “I learned a lot from the CJAA board,” said Templeton. “They do an outstanding job of working together to put on a great event. The team really has a lot of great ideas on how they can advance their junior nationals and I hope to help implement some of their ideas and suggestions into our association.” The two were not only surrounded by

young agriculture enthusiasts, but industry professionals as well. “I had the opportunity to visit with Rob Smith, CEO for the Canadian Angus Association, and David Sibbald, President,” said Davis. “Talking with Rob and David gave me an interesting insight on the CAA. Because the RAAA focuses only on Red Angus, I was intrigued on how CAA combines Red and Black Angus cattle within their association. I really enjoyed having the chance to meet members of the senior board and I think the other juniors gained insight from having the same opportunity as well.” The week was concluded with the traditional awards banquet and dance. “We had a great time and are extremely thankful for this opportunity,” concluded Templeton. “This is a great program and I think it really benefits both associations.” Davis added, “Any junior interested in traveling and learning about the livestock industry in other parts of the world should really jump at the chance to apply for this trip. It truly is a unique experience.” n

NDSU Research Shedding Light on Cow Pregnancy Exploration into early pregnancy will increase efficiency in beef production by North Dakota State University staff

North Dakota State University scientists are a step closer to solving the mystery of why 90-plus percent of beef cows become pregnant after artificial insemination, but only 50 to 60 percent still have a viable embryo 30 days later. The North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station scientists have developed a technique that allows them to obtain fetal tissue and evaluate factors affecting embryo development in the early part of pregnancy – from days 16 to 50.

Dr. Joel Caton

Dr. Carl Dahlen

Dr. Bryan Neville

“Up until about day 7 after fertilization, it’s easy to look at what’s going on,” said Carl Dahlen, a scientist in NDSU’s Animal Sciences Department. “But for the rest of the loss period, it’s like a big black box.” The scientists are focusing on nutrient transfer to the embryo and development of the placenta (an organ that connects the developing calf to its mother), and how and when those occur. They’re also studying how disruptions in nutrient supply and placental development may cause embryo loss. They found that the transfer changes dramatically during the first 50 days of pregnancy.

While fetuses receive many nutrients through a shared blood supply with their mothers, that’s not the case for embryos. Instead, transporters, or nutrient-transferring tissues, carry specific nutrients to the embryo before a shared blood supply is established. As part of their research, the NDSU scientists have identified two transporters that had not been identified before in cattle. “We’ve opened the door on that black box to take a look,” Caton said. Learning why so many embryos are lost is important because beef production needs to be as efficient as possible if the U.S. is going to help meet the challenge of feeding 9.2 billion people by 2050 with the available resources, he noted.

“We’re seeing impacts on some of the key indices as early as 16 days after breeding,” Dahlen said.

“There’s no one else in the world who is doing this research,” Dahlen said. “This puts NDSU squarely in the forefront of this research.”

Days 16 to 50 of pregnancy in cattle are a key time because that’s when the embryo is transitioning into a fetus, according to Joel Caton, another scientist in NDSU’s Animal Sciences Department who is involved in this project. This transition period is critical in development because a great majority of organ systems are in place and differentiated by 50 days after breeding.

Caton and Dahlen are among nine scientists from campus and the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station's Central Grasslands Research Extension Center near Streeter, North Dakota, who are working on this issue with assistance from about a dozen graduate students and a few undergraduates.

NDSU Research Shedding Light on Cow Pregnancy NDSU research is focusing on maintaining embryo viability between days 16 and 50. Shown is an in utero image of a viable embryo at 34 days into the cow's pregnancy.

“This project serves as an excellent example of how RECs and on-campus faculty can work together to accomplish collaborative research projects,” said CGREC Director Bryan Neville, who is one of the scientists involved in the project. The scientists are using heifers from the CGREC and stateof-the-art technology in NDSU’s Advanced Imaging and Microscopy Core Laboratory, Animal Nutrition and Physiology Center and Animal Science Nutrition Laboratory to aid their research. They also are collaborating with New Mexico State University scientists who are conducting related research. Scientists from other universities are interested in getting involved as well. “By understanding the critical stages of early pregnancy, we may be able to help influence management decisions that benefit livestock producers,” Neville said. One of those management decisions is making sure pregnant livestock have adequate feed so they can meet their metabolic demands and supply embryos with the nutrients they need from the start. The scientists also hope this research ultimately will lead to a new reference book on the subject of embryo development. Current publications are decades old. “This is a state-of-the-art reference that probably would stand for an extended period of time, and I’d like North Dakota to be part of that,” said Caton. In the meantime, several of the students involved in the project have been recognized for their papers, posters and presentations at events such as American Society of Animal Science meetings, the Duncan Scholars poster competition and the International Symposium on Energy and Protein Metabolism and Nutrition in Krakow, Poland. NDSU scientists initiated this study in 2014 and have obtained a $150,000 U.S. Department of Agriculture seed grant. They also have received financial support from North Dakota’s State Board of Agricultural Research and Education for additional lab work. n 90 American Red Angus Magazine n October 2016

Miller Earns State and National FFA Beef Award

Anna Miller, a third-generation Red Angus producer from Linden, California, was recently selected as the California State Proficiency Winner in Beef Production-Entrepreneurship. She then moved on to compete in the National FFA competition where she was selected as a Gold Award winner. Miller will also receive her American Farmer Degree at the National FFA convention in October. The American Farmer Degree is the highest honor awarded to an FFA member. Miller is a California Young Cattleman and a past Junior Red Angus national director. She is currently attending Oklahoma State University, double majoring in Animal Science and Ag Communications. Schneider Presented with Alva Rankin Award David Lee Schneider of Oconto, Wisconsin, received the Alva Rankin Award at the 2016 Legacy of Leadership Celebration in Wausau, Wisconsin. Alva Rankin graduated from Leadership Wisconsin Group V. The memorial award is given to a graduating Leadership Wisconsin Fellow who exemplifies Rankin’s strong leadership and personal skills. The graduating group selects the winning classmate who receives a $100 honorarium to go toward a community project, leadership project or entity of their choice that contributes to the community good. The winner of the award exemplifies Al Rankin’s qualities as a world-class individual – traits of being a visionary, solutions-oriented, learning machine, as well as someone who is focused on being and having great people skills, making others feel valued and listening to and engaging others. Schneider was selected by his classmates who agreed that he embodies these traits.

Since 1996, Schneider has operated Schneider Family Farm – a 40-head registered Red Angus cow-calf operation that utilizes artificial insemination and embryo transfer. He began working for CRI/Genex in August of 2011, and is currently the Production Training and Education Specialist, representing CRI/Genex at local schools with career offerings and interviews. He also provides education on beef and dairy farming. Schneider is a member of the Red Angus Association of America and the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, and serves on the Board of Directors for the Wisconsin Cattlemen’s Association and the Wisconsin Beef Council. Schneider will donate his $100 honorarium to the Invest An Acre program. “As my employer, CRI has supported me throughout my Leadership Wisconsin journey,” he said. CRI values stewardship – to treat our land, our communities and business resources as our own. This year at the CRI/Genex National Marketing & Sales Conference, CRI is providing an opportunity to live up to this value through a program called Invest an Acre.” Invest An Acre started with Howard G. Buffet who was inspired by a young boy in Decatur, Illinois, that shared how happy he was to have school lunch. The boy was living in fear that he and his family would have to go back to living in their car. Buffet envisioned a program where farmers could donate a portion of their crops to help their neighbors in need. In its short four years, Invest An Acre has raised more than $2.4 million to fight rural hunger – more than 7 million meals! Monsanto doubles the impact of Invest an Acre by matching all contributions dollar for dollar. Then, Feeding America engages its network of over 200 food banks and 60,000plus agencies across America to ensure that all funds and food donations go towards local food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters. Schneider said, “Our donations will go to the Northeast Wisconsin Food Pantry. This is my way of fulfilling God's message: ‘Feed my people and teach them how to feed themselves.’ It also allows me to take part in feeding the world and to give back to CRI’s core value of stewardship.” n
