Forward Thinkers Propel Red Angus This column will be my last as the president of the Red Angus Association of America. Time flies when you’re having fun – it even flies when you’re not. And to be honest, there have been plenty of good and not-sogood times over the past two years. I’m sure we can agree that we all enjoy the fun times more, but the challenges enable us to grow in ways that we couldn’t imagine. It requires trust in a Greater Plan and willingness to follow when called.

Many people have asked me about the path I followed to the position that I have held for the past two years. After reflection on this question, I realize that three components have been central to my journey: 1) faith and prayer; 2) family and friends’ support; and 3) love for Red Angus cattle and those involved with the breed. I think we’re all made to constantly seek the purpose for which we have been created. As for most of you reading this, I have been consistently led to follow a life which is intimately tied to agriculture. Stewardship of cattle and land are central to my being. I used to think that I could live contentedly never leaving the ranch and my family. So I was perplexed when I began to hear the call some eight years ago to step up and run for the RAAA Board of Directors. The decision to run for the Board was folded and considered in prayer — as has been each and every decision along the way. And here enters the support of family and friends. For the past eight years, I have been blessed with the help of many who have loved and cared for family, land and cattle while I have

6 American Red Angus Magazine ■ September 2016

been away, on calls and distracted by RAAA matters. RAAA business has been tightly woven into our family and business tapestry. I feel blessed to be a part of a breed that has such relevance to the beef industry. If you are reading this, you have found Red Angus relevant in your life. The RAAA has made its mark with genetics of adaptability, thrift and high performance — and I’m not even talking about the cattle. It’s the people who have made this breed and this Association what it is. I see a path of forward thinkers who recognized the value of Red Angus cattle and have built on the strengths and promoted the cattle for the greater good of the beef industry. Some of the people on this path have names we recognize, but many don’t. There are many registered and commercial cattlemen and women who have followed their call to pursue the hard work of raising cattle and have quietly and successfully propelled the Red Angus breed to its position today. It is those people who have made the past two years worthwhile and I thank you for the honor of serving you as RAAA president. It brings a smile to my face to see Red Angus cattle performing highly and topping markets across the nation. Although my last term as president of RAAA has come to a close, you have my word that my dedication to this breed will continue. Ok, I may not leave my ranch or family for a while, but just know that I am happily and quietly raising Red Angus cattle to the betterment of the industry and to the glory of God. ■

Marketing: Do Something Good, Then Tell People About It Not long ago, the formula for success in commercial cow-calf production was fairly simple. High-profit ranchers and farmers ran their cowherds with 1) below-average cow-carrying costs, 2) above-average reproduction rates, and 3) average to above-average weaning weights.

They spent more than their peers on genetics and herd health, but less on just about everything else. They became experts at maintaining adequate cow nutrition while fewer dollars were flowing out of their pockets. None of this was easy (it still isn’t), but the prescription for success could be readily identified and understood. In a commodity industry, keeping throughput up and costs down is all that matters. Cow-calf production certainly qualified as a commodity business for many years.

One rancher sells his average-at-bestquality calves the same way and same time each year. He offers little or no supporting information about genetics and health and finds himself at the bottom of the price range. His neighbor works hard at making his calf crop genetically valuable. Then enrolls those calves in a valueadded marketing program, and meets with greater buyer demand and a much loftier price on sale day. Marketing beats selling every time, but it does require more planning and more work. Roger Bergland was a friend and mentor of mine back in the early and mid-1990s. He was a gem of a fellow. Roger worked in public relations for the then-named National Cattlemen’s Association. He told me more than once that the essence of good PR was to first do something good, and then go tell people about it.

But that was then, and this is now. Gradually in the past decade or two, pro-actively marketing each year’s calf crop has become more important. Selling is out. Marketing is in. Astute producers emphasize marketing right along with the other important parts of their business. Why? Today’s feeder calf market routinely pays $100 to $200 differences per head between calves of the same weight, sold at the same time in the same geographic area.

The same is true of good marketing. Create a valuable calf crop with top-end genetics and a great herd health program behind them. Next promote those calves aggressively to a large number of potential buyers, or find a marketing partner who will do that part for you. There is no benefit in promoting average-quality calves, because there is nothing special to promote. Conversely, the healthiest calves with the best genetics that walk won’t bring what they’re worth on sale day if buyers don’t know just how good they are.

Much of the reason for this difference is found in marketing, or the lack thereof.

Successful marketing starts with a truly superior product.

Association Commentary Successful marketing finishes when that superior product enters the marketplace – appropriately labeled and promoted – and meets with exceptional demand from prospective buyers and ultimately sells at a premium price. FCCP and Top Dollar Angus® Both value-added marketing programs in which Red Angus is involved follow these principles. Our Feeder Calf Certification Program, known by its yellow tag, is the largest value-added calf program of its kind in the industry. As Roger would describe it, the “do something good” part is to produce a calf crop sired by registered Red Angus bulls. Next, by applying the yellow tag, those calves become recognized in the marketplace, which is a proven way to “tell people” about what they genetically are in a way that goes beyond hide color or

general appearance. The success of FCCP, which keeps setting records for growth, is an interesting case study in doing something good and then telling people about it. Roger Bergland was right and his theorem works. Top Dollar Angus is a newer program that operates on the same thought process. Effective marketing starts with a superior product, followed up with the right label plus an ample dose of promotion. Red Angus and Red Angus-influenced cattle (along with Angus) that objectively rank in the top 25 percent of the breed for growth and carcass traits qualify for the program and can be “branded” with the Top Dollar Angus name and logo. Top Dollar Angus will then promote those cattle to a large group of potential buyers that, depending on region, can exceed 200 feedlots and calf growers.

10 American Red Angus Magazine ■ September 2016

Both FCCP and Top Dollar Angus are promoting superior feeder calves in the marketplace and are effective — way more often than not – in capturing premiums for commercial cattlemen. Those who produce a superior product deserve a premium price, but that won’t happen without good marketing. Many cow-calf farmers and ranchers know this, which is why they emphasize marketing right along with cost and production efficiency which never go out of style. If Roger Bergland was still around, he would enjoy seeing the commercial cowcalf sector become more focused on marketing. Doing good by producing superior calves, then telling people far and wide about what you’ve done makes a lot of sense. Thanks, Roger, for explaining good marketing in a common sense way we could all understand. ■

Marketing Update by Gary D. Fike, Director of Commercial Marketing

They’re All Alike – Only Different! All cattle are not alike. I learned this lesson the hard way. While with Iowa State University as a Beef Field Specialist, we purchased 72 head of seven-weight steers at a sale barn to feed at one of the demonstration farms. The cattle were all sired by a particular seedstock producer’s bulls. It was, in effect, a co-mingled sale of the progeny from his bulls. The cattle were very good, phenotypically speaking; they were healthy, and as uniform as they could possibly be. Or so it appeared. There was only a 50-pound weight difference from top to bottom. By the end of the feeding period, the cattle had a 250pound-plus spread in finished weight 170 days later. Why the difference? They sure didn’t look that way at the beginning! I thought we had a great sort on these cattle. Overall, they performed well as a pen. I don’t remember the exact average daily gain, but it was somewhere north of 3.25-pounds-per-day. On the rail, the cattle were 70 percent low Choice or better. Despite apparent uniformity, and similar feedlot entry weight, I found out that not all cattle are created equal, even with similar genetics. Of course, they were from three different producers with different cowherds – that was part of it. And the bulls were of different breeds, too. But they were all of the same color and looked the same. Actually, they were probably less diverse than a group of “put together” steers from a sale barn where the genetics would be even more different. Upon recent analysis of data from the Professional Cattle Consultants’ database from 2012 through 2015, it is still apparent that 20 years later, some things haven’t changed much. Have they changed at all? Over 5,000 lots of cattle were pared down to 3,000 lots in the database we examined. That sorted group had feedlot entry weights of steers weighing between 570 and 630 pounds. Then, those 3,000 lots were sorted by feedlot out weight (finished weight) and averages were calculated by quartiles. 14 American Red Angus Magazine ■ September 2016

The top quartile by finished weight averaged 1,369 pounds while the lightest quartile weighed 1,163 pounds. The average starting weights for those quartiles were 604 and 602 pounds, respectively. Despite similar starting weights, the top 25 percent of group weighed 206 pounds more. Sound familiar? Similarly, feedlot performance factors like average daily gain and feed-to-gain ratio varied widely. Without separating by season or year, the difference in average daily gain in the top-gaining quartile was 3.40 pounds compared to just 2.81 pounds in the bottom, or nearly 0.6 of a pound per head per day. Both quartiles were fed an average of 200 days. There’s a 118 pound difference in finished weight right there, extrapolating those figures. Dry matter conversion was 5.49 versus 6.92 pounds of feed per pound of gain from the most efficient to the least efficient converters. At an ADG of 3.0 pounds per day, that equates into 4.29 fewer pounds of feed over 200 days or 858 fewer pounds of feed at the end of the feeding period. With a ration cost of $185 per ton, that’s nearly an $80-per-head savings in feed. There are a number of different factors that weigh into the eventual outcome of a calf crop. I cannot explain them all here. A solution to at least part of this is the consistent use of straight and crossbreeding systems at the ranch that make sense to create some sort of uniformity in expected performance and outcome. The fact is, we have an industry that is in need of a more consistent, quality product that perform well in the feedlot and on the rail, in addition to adding replacement-quality females to the herd. The Red Angus breed is poised to be a large part of the solution if ranchers will grab the reins and ride that horse! Using Red Angus bulls in nearly any crossbred cowherd, and then utilizing the FCCP tag to identify those calves as at least 50 percent Red Angus bloodlines, will spearhead this campaign. It’s happening now. Using that tag to drive the industry that way could be a big piece of the puzzle! Call today to order your tags before the calves leave the ranch! ■

For FCCP tag orders and inquires, please contact Chessie Mitchell at (940) 387-3502, Ext. 2. And refer to the Calendar of Events on page 108 for a list of upcoming FCCP feeder calf sales.

Member Services Update REDSPro Update “The RAAA staff continues to add features and improve the overall functionality and efficiency of the RedsPro system. We are also making significant progress in shrinking the backlog of work and reduce turnaround times for registrations, transfers, weight updates and other routine tasks performed for members. At the end of July, our backlog is one-third as large as it was six months ago. That's a marked improvement, but we are still not where we want to be and will continue to work hard every day to get the backlog down to near zero.” – Tom Brink, RAAA CEO Continue to watch the American Red Angus Magazine and redangus.org website for any new features and updates. What is the Multi-Breed NCE? The National Cattle Evaluation is the biannual process through which RAAA calculates EPDs for animals in the RAAA database. To ensure inclusion in the NCE, please provide all data possible. For Spring calves, if weaning data is not yet available at this time, it will be included in the next NCE. The EPDs that result from this process are released January (Spring EPDs) and July/August (Fall EPDs) each year. The Next National Cattle Evaluation will be in October. What are the requirements of Total Herd Reporting? Each cow on active inventory (16 months of age and older) should report one of the three for each calving season. 1) calf record, 2) reason code for the cow, or 3) disposal code for the cow. Calving Season for Spring is Jan. 1 to June 30. Calving Season for Fall is July 1 to Dec. 31. Do I have to report calves born dead or that die shortly after birth? Yes, to give the cow a record for having had a calf (THR compliance). Sire, dam and birth date and/or year are required with applicable disposal code for calf. What does the ‘regtype’ indicate? R – Registered, met all requirements for registration I – Incomplete, Pre-Registered prior to reporting weaning weight and date. Once weaning data is reported, status will move to registered. C – Compute, record on file giving the cow a record for having had a calf, but the calf is not considered registered and cannot be transferred or used as a parent, and will not display EPDs.

22 American Red Angus Magazine ■ September 2016

H – Lease agreement not on file for natural mating of a non-owned sire U – Has not met all genetic defect requirements Z – Has not met DNA parentage requirements B - On hold for DNA exclusion in pedigree What information do I report when submitting calving records? The following is a list of fields of information for data reporting of calving records under THR guidelines. Please note, RAAA does have an Open Herdbook, therefore fields of information may vary for the reporting process. If you have questions, please refer to the Rules and Regulations or contact the Member Services Department. • Dam Registration Number • Sire Registration Number • Calf ID/Prefix • Date of Birth/Birth Year • Sex • Birth Weight Group • Twin Code • Mating Code • Color • Horn/Polled/Scurred • Registration Code • Print Registration Paper • Name • Wean Date • Wean Weight • Wean Group • Feed Code

Increased Data = Increased Accuracy = Increased Reliability

What data points can I report that will enhance my animals’ EPDs and Accuracies? For more information on EPDs, please visit the RAAA web site at redangus.org/genetics/ranchers-guide-toepds • Calf Record with Pedigree Information • Birth Weight, Weaning Weight and Yearling Weight • Calving Ease Scores • Body Condition Scores • Dam Mature Weight • Udder Scores – Suspension and Teat Size • Heifer Exposure Data • Ultrasound Data • Actual Carcass Data • Genomic Test

Member Services Update

What are No Progeny Reports? Females listed on the No Progeny Report are active on inventory, but have not yet reported a record for compliance of THR requirements. The report should be used to submit a progeny record, reason or a disposal code for the previous calving year. Avoid Reactivation Fees Dams previously listed on the Fall Herd Inventory will be inactivated if a calf record or reason code (reason why there is no calf record) is not submitted for the year 2015. To avoid reactivation fees, submit a 2015 calf record or reason code by Dec. 1. Spring 2016 Weaning Data Request It is recommended that calf data is submitted at weaning time. When this information becomes available for the 2016 calf crop, please report promptly so that processing can be completed for any upcoming events.

DNA Overview

Why should I submit DNA early? • Reduce getting caught in a time crunch to complete a registration. • Samples may fail due to quantity or quality of sample and may have to resubmit. • Exclusions may result and may have to try other animals. What is the turnaround time? The turnaround time from the lab is 15 to 20 business days. This can vary, though, depending on if the sample has to be reran because it failed the first time. Samples that fail are always ran twice to ensure the sample did truly fail the first time. This can take up to 30 days to receive results. Is a hair or blood sample better? Blood is better because hair has a higher statistic of failure. Hair also is more time consuming for the lab to extract the DNA. Due to these reasons, the lab is now charging a $1 processing fee per hair sample. The only time having a hair sample is beneficial is if samples are being submitted on animals that are twins. This is because the blood between twins is cross contaminated in utero. How can I prevent any delay in results? Submit good quality samples, complete paperwork and avoid cross contamination. Also, if sires or dams are not on file with RAAA, please have them sent to us from the respective lab. This ensures results are as accurate as possible. Should animals be registered prior to submitting DNA? If at all possible, yes. This ensures that DNA results will au24 American Red Angus Magazine ■ September 2016

tomatically be updated in the database. This is required for samples that are being submitted for Genomic Merit (GGPHD and GGP-LD). If samples submitted for all other tests do not have registration numbers at time of submission, the member will be asked to provide once available or it will not be entered into the database. Why do samples fail? • Cross Contamination (fresh, wet samples stacked on top of each other, new needle not used for each animal, twins) • Dirt/Feces • Chemicals (insecticide, tattoo ink, lotion, GermX, etc.) • Exposure to extreme heat and/or sunlight • Not enough sample • Blood samples submitted on twins (cross-contaminated in utero) What does Qualified, Excluded and Not on File mean? Qualified – The sire/dam of the tested animal were on file and the test confirmed parentage. Excluded – The sire/dam of the tested animal were on file, and the test did NOT confirm parentage. Not on File – The sire/dam does not have a DNA profile on file at the lab with SNP markers and parentage cannot be confirmed at this time. What if samples have completed parentage with the old technology (ISAG or Microsatellite)? If sires or dams have been completed for parentage using ISAG technology they do meet the RAAA requirements for AI sires and ET dams. However, if calves are needing to be parent verified to these animals, then the sample originally submitted will either need to be converted to the new technology (SNP), or a new sample will need to be submitted to be tested with the new technology (SNP). Do you have questions about the new Sire DNA requirements? The frequently asked questions have been addressed in the July/August 2016 Magazine or can be found on the website. ■

Payment Policy Change

The RAAA Board of Directors established a new payment policy at their June meeting in Denton, Texas. Customers are now asked to pre-pay for FCCP tags and any requested DNA tests. The policy change took effect July 1, 2016, the beginning of the RAAA Fiscal Year.

Rebuilding with Red Angus

by Sage LaBlanc for American Red Angus Magazine, Photography by Jim Morton

36 American Red Angus Magazine â– September 2016

In the fall of 2006, the Derby Fire burned hot over much of south central Montana. Over 178,400 acres burned taking homes, land and livestock in the blaze’s progression across the Big Timber Region. Over 840 people were evacuated from their homes as the fire tore through farms and ranches.

The Terland family of Bridger Creek Ranches was one of the many ranching families impacted by the wildfire. The Derby Fire burned 95 percent of their ranch, forcing them to rebuild their herd after the destruction. The fire finally burned out and, as new growth began to flourish, Bridger Creek Ranches began again as well. This time they rebuilt with Red Angus.

A Century of History

The Terland family has been on their ranch since it was homesteaded in 1911 by Oselius P. Terland, grandfather of Terry and Rusty Terland, who now operate the ranch together along with their wives Joan and Barb. The ranch originally raised sheep before transitioning to cattle. The Terland brothers relayed many well-loved stories about their father and family members raising sheep, and how agriculture has changed since the area was homesteaded. The shift to cattle brought hard decisions and big choices about the type of calf they wanted to produce. Over the years, Terlands have tried many breeds and types, describing their early herds as “colorful.” Terry Terland reminisced about the cattle market before the fire. “We had a pretty good mix back then. You could sell a group of calves that did not match. Now they like to have calves that are all uniform.” Bridger Creek eventually decided on black cattle with a Hereford influence.

Transition to Red

They got their start with Red Angus out of necessity. In 1985, Montana was struck with a devastating drought, forcing the state to thin out its herds. The next year, the drought conditions subsided and the Terland family bought their first Red Angus cattle. In 1986, they purchased 100 bred cows and 50 yearling heifers, all Red Angus.

Rusty, Barb (above) and Terry (right)Terland

American Red Angus Magazine ■ September 2016 37

Rebuilding with Red Angus The cattle did well in the challenging climate of the region with elevations as high as 7,500 feet, cold winters and hot summers. Rusty said they were fond of the new “tough cattle on their tough terrain.” “There is something about good red cattle in tall green grass that just looks good,” said Rusty. Bridger Creek Ranches kept their Red Angus females and bred to black bulls until the Derby Fire in 2006. When the fire forced them to start anew, they decided that the best course of action was to restart with what had worked best for them in the recent past. They were frustrated with the calving issues and disposition of breeds they had used prior to Red Angus, and with Rusty and Barb having a young daughter, there was no better time to start with a breed that was dependable. The self-sufficiency of their first 150 Red Angus, and the dependable, consistent calves they produced were impressive. The genetics from the original 150 Red Angus remained in their existing herd as an example of the type of cattle they wanted to raise. They needed cattle that would be docile enough to be worked by their family, and be hearty enough

to defend their calves against the wildlife predators that populate the area. Keeping this in mind, they set out to raise their best calves yet with Red Angus genetics. Rebuilding with Reds Reed Point, Montana, is as beautiful as it is rugged. The still blackened hills expose the skeletons of burnt trees, but plant re-growing on the scarred ground is a testament to the terrain’s tenacity. Rusty remembers a winter where the temperature reached a frigid 50 degrees below zero, and another year where the summer heat reached a high of 110 degrees. They raised cattle through it all. Hearty and attentive mother cows have always been key to the success of their ranch. Bear, coyote, mountain lion and the occasional wolf are some of the many predators found out on their range. When it was time to rebuild their herd, they invested their time and money where it had proven itself on the Montana range. Bridger Creek Ranches bought all the mature cows from Barb Terland’s father, who saw this as an opportunity to retire content with the knowledge that his cowherd would stay intact and in production.

The foundation of Bridger Creek Ranches is their cowherd that works hard in harsh environment and terrain.

Rebuilding with Red Angus He had built a herd of commercial Red Angus with timetested maternal traits and gentle dispositions. The cattle they purchased thrived in the harsh climate and terrain. Rusty said the new cattle only increased their love and admiration for the hearty breed. “They have to work hard in the winter, harder than most. Anything can make it in other places, but for us, the Red Angus really did well.” Red Angus was the logical choice for marketing demand. “It's easy to sell the calves, and the cows do all the work,” said Rusty. “That self-sufficiency makes them an attractive breed to anyone. It's easy to sell a Red Angus calf and easy to keep a Red Angus mom.” Rusty explained the key to their success is continuing the lineage of cows that display the traits he is looking for. “Longevity is key. If she can raise a good calf every year consistently, chances are we'll keep her heifer calves, too.” Bridger Creek Ranches focuses on the females when selecting bulls, often selecting for traits that are important for the advancement of their maternal cattle. They take into account both genotype and phenotype when making bull selections.

Barb is a firm believer in the importance of EPDs. “Growth is very important to us, however, we also take into account the welfare of the cows by looking at calving ease and birth weight. The Milk EPD is a balancing act for us because of our rugged terrain. We need sufficient milk without it being too excessive and detrimental to body condition, so we look for a moderate milk number to pass on to our calves.” Market Merit Bridger Creek Ranches plans to continue with the Red Angus breed, not only for their love of the easy-keeping cattle, but because of their respect and relationship with the Red Angus Association of America. “RAAA has done a lot to keep the breed commercially focused, and it shows in their programs. I don't believe we have ever had a more positive experience with a breed association then we have had with the RAAA.” Bridger Creek Ranches has enrolled their calves in the Feeder Calf Certification Program since 2010, and plans to continue using the yellow tags to verify genetics, age and source of their calf crop – a good return on the 99-cent-pertag investment.

The FCCP tag guarantees at least 50 percent Red Angus genetics as well as age and source.

Rebuilding with Red Angus The yellow FCCP tag is an easily recognized indicator, automatically designating calves with a genetic makeup of at least 50 percent Red Angus. This assures buyers of the quality brought to the table by the Red Angus breed, and its highly sought-after attributes. Bridger Creek sells their calves via video through Superior Livestock Auction in the Week In The Rockies Sale at Steamboat Springs, Colorado, and have been happy with their results, selling towards the top of the market the past two years. Prior to selling through Superior, they sold only through local orders. Rusty and Barb believe that video auctions are the way of the future. “Selling locally worked for us for a long time, but now many buyers in our area have retired and there aren’t as many venues,” explained Rusty. “Superior puts calves out to a broader audience.” The Terland family is very pleased with the Week In The Rockies Sale because it is early in the season, but

they are open to change. Barb believes it is important to keep an eye on the market when selecting the sale that best fits your calves, and next year they will explore attending the Superior Big Sky Roundup Sale in Billings, Montana. Rewards of Renewal The land has recovered from the devastation brought on by the Derby Fire. The fields and pastures are green with vegetation, and their inhabitants have returned. Although the scarred landscape will always be a reminder of the past, the new trees are growing and flourishing. The fire brought destruction and change, but also growth and renewal. The Terland family was faced with an ending, and instead began anew. Many would have been discouraged to the point of surrender. Instead, they chose to keep their family ranch alive through what would be any rancher’s nightmare. The hardship became an opportunity to rebuild, and Bridger Creek Ranches is proud to have rebuilt with Red Angus. ■

The Derby Fire of 2006 burned 95 percent of the Bridger Creek Ranch. This photo was taken from Rusty and Barb’s deck.

Optimize Sale-Day Premiums by Trinity Lewis for American Red Angus Magazine

With cattle prices remaining steady yet in a lull as compared to recent unchartered highs, producers across the country are taking a second look at their weaning and marketing protocols.

A vaccination plan, low-stress levels during transition periods and feed-and-water-intake monitoring ensure healthy cattle through the finishing stage.

Backgrounding Jason Schmidt and his family run a fourth-generation cow-calf operation near Medina, North Dakota. His family has focused on the value of gain for several generations and with that mindset have found extensive value in backgrounding cattle since his grandfather entered the ranching business in the 1930s. “We’ve seen value in feeding and getting some extra weight on them before we ship. We are now able to raise silage from the corn, oats and alfalfa that we grow, and are seeing a 3pound-per-day gain.” Schmidt explained that genetic advancements like the use of more accurate EPDs and performance data have played a large role in allowing their calf crop to achieve their weight-gain goals faster. He said that their calves are now reaching a good sale weight three months sooner than they previously had. “Backgrounding” is just that – developing weaned calves before sending them to finishers. “We want to leave enough gain for the finishers so that they are satisfied at the close out,” Schmidt stated. The Schmidts use a standard vaccination protocol that complements their

management practices. “When the calves leave our place they are healthy. When we’ve retained ownership before and sent them away, we’ve rarely had any health issues. Likewise, if we keep them and wean them in their own environment, they do very well after the fact.” When producers in North Dakota and other cold weather climates ship their calves right off the cows to feed yards in temperate regions, they have had issues with their livestock developing respiratory problems. Low-Input Shipping For Monte and Vickie McPeak in the Evergreen State, that hasn’t been an issue.

Optimize Sale-Day Premiums pared keeping up with the cattle market to chasing a moving target. “With feed being a little bit cheaper this year maybe weaning is something to consider,” he said. “But for the most part, if it takes 8 cents a pound to justify it and you’re only getting a 2- or 3-cent bump for doing it, it’s not worth it. I don’t want to do it for nothing.”

Sprague, Washington, is home to the McPeak family who run what Monte describes as a “Ma and Pa shop operation.” The McPeaks run around 800 cows that they summer and spring on a ranch in Washington, and then turn out on corn stalks, wheat re-growth and other crop residue from November through winter. “We try to do all we can to keep from feeding hay,” McPeak stated. Like most producers, they administer a round of vaccinations (8-way and a live vaccine) at branding time and then precondition a month prior to weaning. Optimize Sale-Day Premiums He said that with the current setback in the cattle market, weaning calves longer is more popular than ever. “By weaning the calves, the producers buy themselves a little more time and they can kick the can a little further down the road leading them into a different market. So we’ve seen more people backgrounding now than ever before.” In Currin’s opinion there isn’t much question in producers’ minds as to which vaccinations are important. He said that popular protocols have become a mainstay for modern management practices and insists that producers Bangs vaccinate feeder heifers prior to weaning to ensure that cattle can be transported easily across state lines. No matter the feeding program an operation wishes to employ, adhering to the basics of having a plan in place

for vaccinations, keeping stress levels low during transition periods and monitoring their feed and water intake is imperative. Value-Added Programs Red Angus producers have several advantages at weaning time. The Red Angus Association of America’s successful, no-enrollment-fee Feeder Calf Certification Program (FCCP) accommodates USDA age, source and genetic verification for cattle wearing the Red Angus “yellow tag.” Its second-tier component for crossbreeding programs, Allied Access, gives another option for age and source verification allowing for buyers to be ensured of the product from that operation. Cattlemen with superior Red Angus genetics now have the added opportunity to enroll in the Top Dollar Angus program if the cattle meet

BOLT Software Brings More Reliability to EPDs By Wes Ishmael, BEEF Magazine

Less risk in genetic selection via higher-accuracy EPDs. That’s the bottom-line promise of BOLT, new software adopted by International Genetic Solutions to conduct its National Cattle Evaluation.

IGS is the unique collaboration of 12 breed associations in the U.S. and Canada to conduct a common, multibreed NCE with a combined database representing almost 17 million animals. Many at the recent annual meeting of the Beef Improvement Federation heralded BOLT as a revolutionary step in NCE.

bility to incorporate genomic information directly into EPDs.” Even though systems before BOLT meant DNA data were blended postevaluation, its inclusion in recent years significantly increased the EPD accuracy for young animals. “This absolutely will allow us to maximize use of information in the database for pedigree, phenotypic and genotypic data,” said Keenan.

“It's a game-changer,” believes Wade Shafer, executive vice president of the American Simmental Association.

“Prior to BOLT, the calculation of accuracy in NCE has been limited to what has been dubbed ‘approximation methods,’” said Shafer. “These methods take an indirect approach to the calculation of accuracy and routinely result in estimates of accuracy that can be quite different than an animal's actual accuracy.” Because BOLT can calculate accuracy directly, it is capable of producing true accuracy. “Prior to BOLT, it was thought that the calculation of true accuracy was not feasible on large databases due to the computational requirements being untenable,” explained Shafer.

True Accuracy BOLT is an acronym for Biometric Open Language Tools. Bruce Golden and Dorian Garrick — noted animal breeders familiar to those in the seedstock business — developed the new software and license its use through their company, Theta Solutions LLC.

Keep in mind that EPDs are already the gold standard of genetic prediction. Given available technology, they’re as reliable as possible.

Increased prediction accuracy with BOLT comes through the software’s ability to directly incorporate genomic data into the EPD calculation. “Until now, we’ve had to incorporate DNA information through a postevaluation blending process that combines the independent genomic data and traditional EPD into one published EPD value,” said Larry Keenan, director of breed improvement for the Red Angus Association of America. “BOLT gives us the capa-

Another powerful feature is BOLT’s capacity to calculate actual (true) accuracy, said Shafer.

“There is so much information, but because of the limitation of the models and technology that have been available to us previously, we couldn’t squeeze out all of the value from that information. We’ll be able to get more out of it with BOLT,” he said.

68 American Red Angus Magazine ■ September 2016

Increased Precision The massive size of the IGS database also lends itself to increased prediction accuracy. “Accuracy is critical to making genetic progress,” Shafer emphasized. “There are almost 17 million animals in the IGS database. The accuracy of prediction generally increases with the volume of data.”

BOLT Software Brings More Reliability to EPDs Depending on your leanings, a multibreed NCE also offers sturdier predictions than a single-breed analysis. Think of it like this — a registered Red Angus bull has an EPD within that breed built upon the pedigree, phenotypic data and now, genotypic data submitted to that breed’s database. But the bull may also sire or be a relative to lots of other cattle accounted for in other breed databases. Being able to account for more progeny and relatives across more of the cattle population makes for a more accurate snapshot of the bull's genetic potential. ASA began working with Cornell University in 1995, funding research and development for multi-breed NCE. Unlike in the traditional model, where universities developed NCE models and performed NCE for breed association clients, ASA shared the development costs and ownership. At the time, Simmental breeders — like those of other Continental breeds — were primarily focused on breeding up cattle to purebred levels. “We had lots of halfblood, three-quarter-blood and seven-eighths-blood Simmental, but we were using a single-breed model for genetic evaluation,” Shafer explained. A single-breed model couldn’t fully account for breed differences or heterosis. These days, of course, another advantage of multi-breed analysis is that hybrid and composite seedstock are commonplace. What You Can Expect “From what we have seen thus far, it appears BOLT has the capacity to improve the accuracy of prediction well beyond any currently existing technology,” said Shafer. “As is typically

IGS is a Pioneering Effort

IGS — a collaboration of 12 breed associations in the U.S. and Canada conducting multi-breed genetic evaluation — flies in the face of traditional breed philosophy. Rather than competing against one another, these breeds came together on common ground for the benefit of all. The IGS seeds were sown officially in 2010 when the ASA and the RAAA formalized a contractual agreement to conduct joint multi-breed NCE, and to advance genetic evaluation technology. Really, the seeds were sown years before, when RAAA was trying to drum up interest from other breeds to conduct a multi-breed NCE. ASA was always at the table with them, though a couple of early attempts fizzled. “Our two organizations share some common foundational values, including a focus on serving commercial cattle producers,” explained Keenan. “We shared a common focus of making sure we have reliable tools for commercial producers to use, and making sure genetic evaluation is scientifically sound.” The IGS technical committee guides the organization’s efforts. It includes breeders and scientists selected by RAAA and ASA. BOLT grew from this group’s initial strategic plan. IGS collaborators include: • American Chianina Association • American Gelbvieh Association • American Maine-Anjou Association • American Shorthorn Association • American Simmental Association • Canadian Angus Association

the case with new genetic evaluation technology, the biggest gains will be on younger, lower-accuracy animals which, fortuitously, is the vast majority of animals being considered as breeding stock.” When IGS begins conducting its NCE with BOLT, seedstock producers will likely see some re-ranking of bulls which always causes discomfort. The EPD accuracies for some bulls will likely decline, too. Rather than an indication that the new method is less robust, declining accuracy with the initial BOLT NCE would mean that

the previous accuracy – calculated via the approximation method – was too high. Already EPDs can be compared directly among IGS breeds for growth and carcass traits. Ultimately, plans call for making that possible with heifer pregnancy and stayability, too. “BOLT is a software package that is very dynamic and flexible with the ability to accommodate most any type of statistical model,” Shafer said.

BOLT Software Brings More Reliability to EPDs “Its flexibility makes upgrading models or developing EPDs for new traits highly feasible.” BOLT is lightning-fast, too, compared to current NCE models and technology. Running the current IGS NCE without BOLT takes days. Running the NCE on the same computer with BOLT only takes a few minutes. “The remarkable increase in speed is due to the software being written in a manner that utilizes the hardware to its fullest capacity — an approach that takes a world-class understanding of the interaction between computer programming and hardware,” said Shafer. “BOLT’s dramatic speed allows for computational feats that were previously considered untenable, such as the calculation of true accuracy on a massive database.”

IGS is in the process of readying its massive database for BOLT. There is no launch date, but indications are that it should be this year or the first part of next year. “Eventually, I believe all genetic

evaluation providers, regardless of species, will go to it [BOLT] because of the power it brings to the table,” Keenan said. ■ (Story reprinted with the permission of BEEF Magazine)

BOLT - The iPhone of Genetic Evaluations by Larry Keenan, Director of Breed Improvement

Take a stroll down memory lane and recall the days prior to the cellphone. While peace and tranquility may be your first thoughts, you also remember your ability to communicate with customers, business partners, family, etc. was significantly less. As a society we quickly recognized the value of immediate communication and efficient access to data took precedence over the serenity of a cellphone-less world. Currently, incorporation of the genomic data is achieved through a post-National Cattle Evaluation ‘blending’ method that adjusts the traditional EPDs of the tested animal based on the genomic information. The most significant limitation of ‘blending’ is the fact that the genomic data only impacts the EPDs of the tested animal. BOLT resolves this shortcoming. Once BOLT is implemented, the genomic data will be directly incorporated into the EPD calculation of the tested animal as well as all animals in their pedigree (sire, dam, progeny, grand progeny, etc.). This advancement will provide producers with the necessary means to maximize the return on their DNA test investment.

Following the release of the handheld cellphone, only minor technological advancements were made until the release of the Apple iPhone. The iPhone was a game-changer, as it was the first communications device that combined the cellphone, portable media player (iPod) and internet access into a single handheld device that used a touchscreen interface. The release of the iPhone spawned a communications revolution, which has largely shaped the highly efficient communication world that we live in today. A similar revolution is brewing in the genetic evaluation world. Don’t panic. Just as my old Motorola Razr could consistently complete a highquality phone call, the EPDs that describe Red Angus cattle today are reliable, but improvements can be made to the software used to calculate them. Numerous genetic evaluation advancements have been made in the last decade, with the most prevalent being multi-breed EPDs and genomic technology. However, our ability to maximize the information gained from these advancements has been hamstrung by the 20-plusyear-old software currently used to calculate our EPDs. Enter the next generation of genetic evaluation software – Biometric Open Language Toolkit (BOLT). Developed by Theta Solutions’ Bruce Golden and Dorian Garrick (www.thetasolution-

sllc.com), BOLT holds promise to not only resolve the limitations known to exists in today’s genetic evaluation software, but will also provide the flexibility needed to deliver tomorrow’s advancements. Direct Incorporation of Genomic Data While the delivery of genomic technology has greatly increased the amount of data available for predicting an animal’s genetic merit, our ability to fully apply that data into the EPD calculations has been limited.

74 American Red Angus Magazine ■ September 2016

Precise Calculation of Accuracy A recognized imperfection of all current genetic evaluations is the inability to directly calculate accuracy values on a large database. Less computational-intensive approximation approaches have been used to indirectly estimate accuracy. A scientifically known drawback of the approximation method is its tendency to overestimate accuracy. BOLT’s powerful combination of streamlined statistical modeling and integration of modern computing power will allow for the direct estimation of accuracy values, therefore resolving the known issues of the approximation methods.

BOLT - The iPhone of Genetic Evaluations Expect a minimal decrease in an animal’s accuracy, but know that the decrease is a correction to previously inflated accuracy and not a decrease in genetic prediction power.

tion of the time. An NCE calculation that currently takes days is achieved in a few minutes using BOLT, making the possibility of weekly NCEs a reality.

Increased Frequency of National Cattle Evaluations In your walk down pre-cellphone memory lane, you probably recalled ‘back-in-the-day’ when major events would happen in the middle of the day, yet you didn’t know about it until you arrived at home in the evening.

Full Suite of Multi-Breed EPDs A milestone in Red Angus’ genetic evaluations was achieved in 2010 with the release of multi-breed growth and carcass EPDs. Two short years later those same growth and carcass EPDs were presented on a multi-breed base which allowed for the direct comparison of all breeds participating in the International Genetic Solutions genetic evaluation. Red Angus has continued to publish single-breed CED, CEM, ME, HPG and STAY EPDs due to certain limitations in the multi-breed EPD calculation for those traits.

Similarly, while data is submitted and processed on a daily basis at the RAAA National Office, only two NCEs are performed per year. The time interval from data pull to publishing of the resulting EPDs is a several-week process, with the EPD calculation segment alone consuming at least one week. BOLT takes a frac-

BOLT, however, overcomes those lim-

itations. As a result, producers will have access to a full suite of multibreed EPDs presented on a multibreed base. Identical to when Red Angus released growth and carcass traits on the multi-breed base, change should be expected when CED, CEM, ME, HPG and STAY EPDs are converted to a multi-breed base. While the exact release date of BOLTcalculated IGS EPDs has not been determined, we anticipate their availability in the forthcoming months. The BOLT revolution is close and will be a game changer in resolving genetic software limitations, advancing turnaround speed and increasing genetic prediction power – all factors that impact knowledge, decision making and profitability. Just as technology has advanced our communication capabilities with the smartphone, BOLT will advance genetic prediction to a new elevation. ■

Red Angus Growth Reflects Cow-Calf Focus by Harold Bertz, Director of Business Development

The results of the Red Angus Association of America 20152016 fiscal year continue the trend of overwhelming popularity and value for Red Angus and Red Angus-influenced cattle. In every phase of production and in every geographical region, the Red Angus breed is gaining market share and increasing growth, both in numbers and influence. Rancher Trusted Commercial cow-calf producers, feeders and packers have all shown their increasing preference for Red Angus by investing more in these high-quality cattle. This is documented by independent research done at Kansas State University showing Red Angus-sired steers and heifers commanded more dollars than any other breed types.

Total Herd Reporting The growth of the Red Angus breed is directly correlated with breeders’ commitment to Total Herd Reporting. Over 88,000 head were enrolled in THR, growing 5 percent. The data derived from these cows continues to provide commercial cattlemen and women with the most accurately described cattle in the industry. Association and Junior memberships continue a positive growth trend with regular memberships increasing 6.5 percent and junior membership growing 4 percent over last year. Registrations continued a solid growth pattern growing 3 percent. Red Angus continues to build, grow and expand in both cattle and people. The following information gives us a snapshot of the exciting growth experienced by Red Angus in 2015-2016. Let’s celebrate the great accomplishments, but keep our eye on the future. As we move into a less-stable cattle market and lower prices, our goals should remain focused on developing Red Angus seedstock that fit the commercial cattle industry. Let’s continue the task of strengthening our position as the industry’s preferred female and build on the success of THR, economically focused EPDs and top-shelf marketing programs. This focus will give ranchers the genetic inputs they need to remain competitive and profitable. n

Ranch Experience Prepared Stauffer to Manage Top Dollar Angus® When Kenny Stauffer enrolled calves in Top Dollar Angus – the first set of publicly traded cattle through the program – he didn’t know the next chapter of his career would call him to be the general manager of this relatively young business that focuses on verifying and marketing high-genetic-potential cattle from the Red Angus and Angus breeds. That first set of cattle were the top-selling group from over 100,000 head that sold that same week on a single video auction. He has been a huge supporter of Top Dollar Angus ever since. Top Dollar Angus recently hired Stauffer to represent customers, promote the program, implement the business plan and work with investors. He will be based out of Larkspur, Colorado, spending a good portion of his time on the road speaking to groups, meeting new and current customers, and building relationships with business partners. “In today’s market, our feeders and customers are looking for high-end genetics that will bring added premiums through the feeding phase, on the rail and all the way to the meat counter,” said Stauffer. “Top Dollar Angus will help differentiate those producers and bring their operations to the forefront to reward them the price premiums they deserve for their years of genetic focus.” Top Dollar Angus, a genetic certification and marketing-assistance company, focuses exclusively on high-growth, high-carcass-value commercial Red Angus and Angus feeder cattle. Qualifying cattle can be either crossbred or straight bred. The company has a large network of participating feedlots that understand the superior value of high-performing feeder calves and are willing to purchase these cattle at premium prices. "Top Dollar Angus is experiencing rapid growth," said Tom Brink, RAAA CEO and founder of Top Dollar Angus. "The number of cattle qualified into the program was more than four times greater from January to July this year versus the same period a year ago." For the past 16 years, Stauffer managed a ranch for an absentee landowner, building it into a multimillion-dollar operation consisting of 600 commercial and 150 registered cows, a 1,000-head feed yard and a direct-sales meat business. In addition to overseeing daily operations, he focused on customer relations, marketing and genetic improvement. Stauffer and his wife Misty have two daughters – Jacque, 17, and Delanee, 13. The family enjoys traveling, church, camping, hunting and entertaining friends. Producers interested in more information on Top Dollar Angus can reach Stauffer at 308-641-0429 or kenny@topdollarangus.com. n

How to enroll in Top Dollar Angus

A producer’s first step in enrolling in Top Dollar Angus is to contact General Manager Kenny Stauffer at kenny@topdollarangus.com or 308-641-0429 to discuss the herd’s genetics. A herd can qualify for the program in two ways – either with two generations of genetic records or a DNA feeder analysis.

Producer Qualification In order for a calf crop to qualify for Top Dollar Angus, the sires and maternal grandsires (dams’ sires) must objectively rank in the top 25 percent of their respective breed for growth and carcass traits guaranteeing two generations of stacked genetics. In the Red Angus breed, that ranking is through the GridMaster (GM) Index. Angus-sired calves qualify when both sires and maternal grandsires rank in the top 25 percent for $Beef. Either straight-bred and crossbred cattle can qualify. Producers can also qualify their cattle through DNA evaluation of either their cowherd or of the feeder calves themselves. Upon qualifying, the producer pays a 12-month herd enrollment of $225, plus $4 per head on feeder calves. On a 250head cowherd with 100 steers marketed through Top Dollar Angus, the participating producer would spend $6.25 per head ($225 herd enrollment + $400 steer cost = $625 ÷ 100 steers = $.6.25 per steer). Typical premiums for Top Dollar Angus-enrolled calves range from $40 to $70 per head over the average market price at that particular time as adjusted for sex, weight and location. Over 90 percent of the time, Top Dollar Angus has been successful in helping cattle earn market premiums. Seedstock Partnership Top Dollar Angus is also implementing its new Seedstock Partnership. Seedstock producers can participate if the bulls or females they sell meet genetic profile requirements for the program. For a small annual fee, seedstock suppliers can incorporate the Top Dollar Angus logo in their catalog beside every bull or female lot that meets genetic criteria. As a Seedstock Partner, they receive coupons for four of their customers to cover the initial herd enrollment fee. “This is a great way for breeders to promote their top carcass and growth animals while helping their customers enroll into a program that brings added value to their operation,” explained Stauffer.

Top Dollar Angus Played Pivotal Role in Profitability

by Trinity Lewis for American Red Angus Magazine

Stomeham, Colorado, is home to the Toedtli Ranch where Doug Hatch manages about 550 mature cows and runs around 60 to 100 head of replacement heifers each year. The commercial Red Angus operation is one of the first to use Top Dollar Angus as part of their marketing program. Hatch strives to keep a competitive edge on the ever-fluctuating cattle market by employing unique marketing strategies and maintaining integrity in the herd. “We are really particular about the heifers we save and the bulls we buy and to use naturally and AI to,” he explained. The Toedtli Ranch health protocol includes those required for Vac34 designation; 7-way Clostridial and viral 5-way vaccinations at branding and with boosters of those plus a dose of a pneumonia vaccine two to three weeks prior to shipping. “That way when they go to the feed yards they are ready for their vaccinations and are ready to rock right on,” said Hatch. The ranch also enrolls their calves in the Feeder Calf Certification Program so they can tag with the “yellow tag” and sell with the “Certified Red Angus” designation. With the market in a slight set-back compared to recent historical high prices, Hatch relayed that he was confident that the Top Dollar Angus program helped him to achieve this year’s sale goals. “Last year was a runaway for everybody. This year with the market being as it was, our cattle were represented well and sold well. They were sure on the top end of what most were that day and I think they were that kind of calves.” Hatch has used Superior Livestock Auction to sell his cattle for the last two years and credits his marketing success to a combination of efforts by many. This year, he added Top Dollar Angus’ services which he feels played a pivotal role in this calf crop’s profit. He plans to employ the program again in the future. n

2016 Round-Up – Virginia is for Red Angus Lovers! by Kacey Koester, JRA President

Thirty Junior Red Angus members from across the United States and two guests from Canada gathered on June 29 in Charlottesville, Virginia, to kick off the 2016 JRA Round-Up.

Coming from various backgrounds in Red Angus, these JRA members hit it off almost instantly, ready to learn and begin their adventure in Virginia.

compete in four contests designed to advance their leadership and stockman skills.

Virginia is for Inquiring Minds Throughout the week, juniors experienced various forms of Virginia agriculture through diverse tour stops. Stops ranged from a poultry plant that can harvest up to 400 chickens per minute, to a robotic dairy that increased their milk production by 15 pounds per day per cow by converting their operation to a robotic milking system. Juniors also had the opportunity to look at fellow Red Angus producers and their cattle in Virginia with stops at Double S Farm and Pelton Hills/Fingerboard Farms.

Red Angus Promotions – The Red Angus Promotions contest is a combination of several previous contests targeting marketing skills. Participants had the freedom to create anything that promoted Red Angus. The entries ranged from scrapbooks to business cards. Participants had to also include a cover letter describing the target audience and the methods they used to create their entry.

We also heard from various speakers along the way. To kick off our RoundUp, Matt Lohr, former Virginia Commissioner of Agriculture and current director of the Knowledge Center for Farm Credit of the Virginias, presented a keynote address on how to get the most out of our Round-Up experience. We also had the privilege of hearing from Tom Brink, RAAA CEO. Brink shared his knowledge on the opportunities available to juniors in the industry of agriculture and that, with new technology, the opportunities are bigger than ever if we work hard and self-educate. To close out our week, we had former Chopped Junior champion, Elisabeth Watkins, discuss her experiences on the show as well as share ideas of how to be great advocates for agriculture. Virginia is for Contestants Round-Up participants were able to

Meat Animal Evaluation – The livestock evaluation contest has been a regular at Round-Up for many years. This year we added meat evaluation components to the event. Virginia Tech was gracious enough to put together live animal and meat classes for juniors to evaluate. In the live classes, participants evaluated heifers for a keep/cull class and bulls for a placing class. At the Meat Lab, participants completed retail cut identification, ribeye yield grade and pricing, and a retail placings class. Agricultural Advocacy – The Agricultural Advocacy contest was updated from the previous team advocacy contest and participants competed individually throughout the entire contest. Participants were asked to prepare a written or oral social media message promoting beef nutrition before arriving at RoundUp. During Round-Up, members were then asked to compete in a mock media interview as well as create a written or oral reactive social media message to a statement about the nutritional value of beef. The contest was well received and partici-

2016 Round-Up – Virginia is for Red Angus Lovers! pants were given the opportunity to showcase their public speaking skills as well as beef knowledge with the theme of sharing their information to consumers who have little to no information about the beef industry. Stockman’s Knowledge – The final contest was the Stockman’s Knowledge contest. Individuals took an exam on Red Angus and beef industry knowledge and then had to correctly identify 10 livestock tools. Of those 10 tools, they needed to explain and demonstrate to a panel of three judges how to correctly use the tool. Tools ranged from an AI gun to OB straps. Based on placings in each contests, a high-point senior and junior member were recognized at the Round-Up banquet. Virginia is for JRA Business Juniors participated in the annual

JRA meeting at Round-Up. The annual meeting was divided into two parts. At the first meeting, the JRA board went over the constitutional amendments and then voted on them. The amendments were: 1. Change the name from ‘National Junior Red Angus Association’ to ‘Junior Red Angus Association of America’ to align with RAAA. 2. Addition of the Purpose Statement to the constitution. 3. Change JRA regions to Region A, B and C to align with RAAA. 4. Change JRA Board of Director terms from two years to one year with the opportunity to run up to four years. Resolutions 1, 2 and 3 were passed by the membership. Resolution 4 failed. Virginia is for Team Building For an added twist to Round-Up this year, each board member was responsible for leading a squad of Round-

Up participants called “Contemporary Groups” to develop team skills and provide mentoring for younger members. Throughout the course of the week, teams competed in a series of challenges that ranged from blindfolded partner tag to a team cook-off with hamburger as their main ingredient. Aside from the challenges, teams often met to discuss what they learned at tour stops, visit about their Red Angus experiences, and share many laughs and memories together. During the banquet, each Contemporary Group was also responsible for putting together a short skit combining their favorite parts of Round-Up. The great state of Virginia is for a lot of things, but after seeing many friendships form, minds explore, and memories made, it can be said with confidence that Virginia is definitely for Red Angus Lovers!

Stoney Creek Farm Selected as Regional ESAP Winner by National Cattlemen’s Beef Association

Stoney Creek Farm in Redwood Falls, Minnesota, has been selected as one of six regional honorees of the Environmental Stewardship Award Program. The award, announced during the 2016 Cattle Industry Summer Business Grant and Dawn Meeting in July, recognizes Breitkreutz outstanding stewardship and conservation efforts. This year’s regional winners will compete for the national award which will be announced during the Annual Cattle Industry Convention in February 2017. Stoney Creek Farm, owned by Grant and Dawn Breitkreutz, is a third generation commercial Red Angus farm and custom baling business located in south central Minnesota. The family grazes 138 cows on 465 acres of permanent pasture land and feeds 750 head of cattle annually. The Breitkreutz family also farms 250 acres of notill corn, soybeans and wheat, and 50 acres of alfalfa. “Grant and Dawn have been innovators of integrating cattle and prescribed grazing systems into conservation farming practices in the state of Minnesota,” said Ashley Kohls, Minnesota Cattlemen’s Association executive director. “The countless hours they spend learning more about sustainable farming practices are matched by the number of hours they spend promoting these practices and the culture of conservation to both fellow cattlemen as well as consumers.”

Stoney Creek Farm received the NCBA’s Region 3 Environmental Stewardship Award and will vie for national honors in February.

Stoney Creek Farm raises commercial Red Angus cattle on their southcentral Minnesota farm. The Breitkreutzes work closely with the Natural Resource Conservation Service and Minnesota Department of Natural Resources to implement numerous conservation practices to sustainably increase production and improve soil health. By implementing a strategically prescribed grazing plan, they have improved the health of their pastures and went from grazing 58 cow-calf pairs on 128 acres three months of the year, to grazing 120 or more pairs for six months of the year. “Through the use of prescribed grazing, Grant and Dawn have been able to improve every system on their farm, including the addition of extended riparian buffer areas, restoring remnant prairie, improving erosion control measures, pest management and nutrient management,” said Marilyn Bernhardson, administrator of the Redwood County Soil and Water Conservation District. The Breitkreutz family continues to seek education opportunities to improve their operation. In 2015, Grant and Dawn were recognized as the Minnesota State Cattlemen’s Association Cattlemen of the Year. That year they served the Minnesota cattle community by travelling more than 4,000 miles to participate in nearly 75 in-person meetings – 32 of which involved elected officials or government agencies – and 25 media engagements. “Grant and Dawn have worked diligently to implement rotational grazing, restore used-up pastures, protect riparian areas, incorporate cover crops, and manage nutrient cycling on their ranch,” said Eric Mousel, University of Minnesota Extension beef team. “They also have been willing to showcase their many conservation efforts on various public tours and workshops to disseminate what they have accomplished and learned to other producers, agency personnel and the public.” Established in 1991 by the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association to recognize outstanding land stewards in the cattle industry, ESAP is generously sponsored by Dow AgroSciences, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Cattlemen’s Foundation. n American Red Angus Magazine n September 2016 95

In Memory: Ralph Pederson

Ralph Pederson, 97, of Firesteel, South Dakota, passed away July 8, 2016. Ralph Gerald Pederson was born May 29, 1919, at the family homestead to Reinhart and Mary (Thorstenson) Pederson. When he was only a year-and-half-old, his father passed away and his mother moved back to Selby where his grandparents and two uncles helped raise him. In 1936, when Ralph was 16, he, his sister Stella and mother returned to the homestead north of Firesteel. He worked with the WPA building roads using horses, at the Firesteel coal mine as a grease monkey on the drag line, broke horses and helped with the farming. His uncle gave him 20 cows on shares and that was the start of Broken Heart Ranch. In 1941, he traded horses in to purchase his first tractor, a Farmall A, for $750. Ralph met Helen Brammer and they were married on Oct. 16, 1943. In 1947 they purchased their ranch northeast of Firesteel where they raised their sons Gary and Ron, gradually changing from sheep and cattle to registered and commercial Red Angus and registered Quarter Horses. He actively bred and raced Quarter Horses from the 1960s until his passing.

Broken Heart Ranch was named to the national Beef Improvement Federation’s Commercial Producer Honor Roll of Excellence in 1983 for Ralph’s dedication to production testing of commercial cattle. Ralph was very community driven and volunteered his time to the Timber Lake Saddle Club, Timber Lake and Area Historical Society, Timber Lake Rodeo Association and Dewey County 4-H. He was also acting President of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church when the new church in Timber Lake was built. Ralph is survived by his sons Gary (Suzet) and Ron “Stub”; his grandchildren and their families: Bart and Carol Pederson, Bret and Cindy Pederson, Kim and Cliff Olson, and Chad and Lisa Pederson; great grandchildren: Logan, Blake, Jessica and Kylie Pederson, G.P., J.B., C.L., J.W. and J.C. Pederson, Austin and Wyatt Olson, and Bricelyn Pederson. Ralph was preceded in death by his cherished wife Helen, his parents Reinhart and Mary Pederson, sister and brother-in-law Stella and Peter Remillong, and many relatives. n
