Excellence in Stewardship – An Expectation, Not a Choice God gave man dominion over His creation. In the words of the disciple Luke, “Everyone who has been given much, much more will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.” (Luke 12:48 NIV) Growing up living and working alongside my father and my grandfather tending our farm, I watched this principle lived out – and these men set a standard of commitment to stewardship that continues to inspire me today. It is a legacy I hope to pass on to my children and grandchildren. With the ownership of land, crops and livestock comes responsibility to that property and to everyone connected to it. There will be generations after us and we must work to preserve them and not damage them for the next generation. Just as I was taught by the living examples of my father and grandfather, we must teach these lessons about protecting our land and our businesses to the next generation. We are accountable for how we manage these resources – it is indeed a measure of our character. Thomas Jefferson once wrote, “Agriculture is our nation’s wisest pursuit.” I believe we farmers and ranchers are called to do what we do. We are chosen. We are blessed by our Creator and we are honored to be a part of one another. As a national breed association, I see us (the Red Angus Association

of America) as a fine example of stewardship. Let’s stop and look at why I say that. Pause and digest the fact that our CEO, national staff, president, board of directors and our many member committees – Executive, Registration, Marketing, Constitution and Bylaws, Show and Sale, Promotions, Breed Improvement, Junior Activities, Finance, Technical, Alliance, Strategic Planning, Convention, Nominating and Awards – and of course our magazine, are all working for the Association and membership to strengthen our breed. They are like spokes in a wheel seeking vision and balance. The same applies to us as individuals. Stewardship is being mindful of protecting and improving everything we touch – at home, on social media, at church, in our schools and in our communities. Red Angus cattle embody excellence in stewardship thanks to our founding fathers and every subsequent generation of people and cattle. We have looked back a bit at our history. We have looked at where we are presently. Now, let’s look ahead to our future and continue to develop a vision for ongoing stewardship. I hope this commentary will inspire us to embrace the principles of stewardship to advance our breed, our association, and our farms and ranches. As Vince Lombardi said, “Perfection is not attainable but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence!” n

Stewardship Takes Many Forms: Here are Three to Think About Stewardship is a subject worth discussing. Good stewards are conscientious and intentional about everything they do. They see the big picture. They think long term. Unselfishness defines their approach to both business and life. Leaving something better than how they found it becomes more than just a cliché to those who practice the responsible behavior that defines good stewardship.
Association for proactively benefitting the environment while making their ranch as productive and economically sustainable as possible. Credit is given where credit is deserved, no doubt. However, there are many other ranchers and farmers throughout this great nation who also do award-worthy work taking care of the land, water, wildlife and the nature that surrounds them.
Remember camping with your family as a kid? Like mine, your dad (or uncle or granddad) probably instructed you to leave the campsite in better condition than when you arrived. That is the essence of stewardship. And here’s a little-known fact: A person that goes through life making their corner of the world a better place is sure to feel good about themselves and about what they have contributed. Call it a beneficial byproduct of being a good steward.
The public sometimes forgets that cattle people are outside every day. They too like to hunt and fish, and ultimately to enjoy God’s green earth in both their work and recreation. They do so a whole lot more than city folks, who spend time outdoors for maybe a couple weeks a year. The typical cattle rancher and farmer protects and nurtures the environment because it’s their livelihood and because, almost to a person, they are nature lovers too. That is why they work tirelessly to make a living and to leave their environmental resources better than they found them.

Association Commentary The breed is larger now than it was a decade or two ago. Great genetic choices abound. Whether it’s picking a new sire(s) for use in artificial insemination, looking for the next outcross herd bull, or finding that just-right show heifer, the opportunity to meet your objectives within the Red Angus breed has never been better. We are the beneficiaries of those who worked hard over the years to relentlessly improve Red Angus cattle. They were good genetic stewards – very good, in fact.
It’s a rhetorical question because few are choosing to do so. Phenotypically and genotypically, today’s Red Angus bulls and females have much more to offer in every way. Real improvement has been made, which gives Red Angus breeders an even stronger foundation to build on for the next generation. So, run with the torch – keep making the breed better and then pass it on to the next round of young cattlemen and women. That is genetic stewardship.
Proof of their progress is easy to see. Just pick up an ARA Magazine from 10 to 15 years ago and flip through the advertisements. How many of us would go back and use those same genetics today?

Youth Stewardship Helping our youth grow, develop and learn is stewardship in a very real way. And there is no greater resource than our youth. Here again, cattle people are exceptional. Teaching integrity, responsibility, hard work, the ability to rebound from setbacks and a host of other top-shelf values is alive and well in rural America. We see it every day where the pavement ends and gravel begins. Many of our urban neighbors could learn something from us in that regard. Let’s keep being good stewards of our youth. It takes time, money and sometimes a good dose of patience. But that’s what good stewards do over and over, without hesitation. ■

Are You a Grid Master? Submit Data.
At the writing of this article, the spring 2016 bull sale season is wrapping up. What an exciting time for Red Angus breeders, their families and customers to gather and share some great cattle, fellowship and food. I enjoyed meeting Red Angus breeders from all over the country and watch them sell high-quality seedstock and work with family and friends to put together their most-important cattle day of the year.
Red Angus cattle continue to add value to premium markets and build customer reputations through the FCCP. Red Angus’ ability to consistently grade Choice or higher and maintain low levels of Yield Grade 4s make them a target for packers to fill premium branded-beef program demands. Cattle wearing the “yellow tag” or “green tag” signifying enrollment in the Red Angus FCCP or Allied Access programs may submit carcass data to be considered for the distinguished Grid Master award.
I was humbled to meet progressive commercial cattlemen and women who purchased valuable genetic tools for their commercial herds, genetics that will influence the profitability of their operations for years to come. It was also impressive to view the support staff that assists both the seedstock and commercial sectors of the beef supply chain – bankers, feed representatives, veterinarians, AI technicians and publication reps – all come together to make the circle complete.
RAAA recognizes Grid Master winners as a way to demonstrate the grid capability and potential for increased market premiums of Red Angus cattle. Producers whose cattle are enrolled in the FCCP or AA are eligible to submit data to RAAA, and the very best of those cattle qualify for Grid Master status. By collecting carcass data, producers improve their reputation as progressive cattlemen and feeders. They are also able to apply the carcass information into breeding advancements and sire selection in their cowherd.
Here are a few of the takeaways I gathered in visiting 25 bull sales throughout the upper Midwest and High Plains, and viewing well over 2,000 Red Angus bulls this spring.
1. Red Angus bull quality is tremendous! This year’s bull offering was the best I have ever seen phenotypically – more muscle, rib shape and quality than ever. These bulls truly offered commercial cattlemen and women and the industry a wide variety of accurately genetically described, visually appealing cattle. In all of the bulls I viewed, I saw less than 10 head with undesirable testicles, very few with poor rib shape, and only a few with structure issues. Breeders continue to inject more muscle and performance into their bulls, while maintaining excellent convenience traits like calving ease, heifer pregnancy and stayability. As a breed, we need to remain diligent in selecting correct feet and leg structure and make the difficult decision to cull when problems are observed. 2. Sales remained strong despite sagging cattle prices. Cattle markets continued to trend lower during the entire spring sale season, but despite that, Red Angus demand remained strong.

Marketing Update Bulls with solid EPD profiles and correct phenotype stayed level with last year’s record prices. There seemed to be less demand for bulls towards the average of the group or below this year. Red Angus breeders need to remain rigid in their bull selection criteria when making the decision to keep bulls or castrate. If you question whether a bull should be kept, sharpen the knife! Red Angus continues to increase sales because of the extremely high quality genetics breeders provide from the first lot in the ring to the last bull that sells. 3. Commercial marketing programs are important. Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program tags have shattered previous years’ enrollments during the first quarter of this year. Across the country, there is a renewed interest in identifying cattle as being Red Angus, and that’s exciting! Red Angus’ commitment to positively identifying cattle as 50 percent Red Angus or greater through our FCCP is going to be prominent in future marketing efforts. If every Red Angus breeder convinced two customers who are not currently enrolled to utilize the distinctive yellow tag, think of the impact that would have on the number of positively identified Red Angus cattle put into the beef production chain! Also do not forget the opportunities for those commercial cattlemen and women who are unable to use FCCP with our Allied Access program. As a reminder, this is a great option for folks that utilize HybRED bulls or multiple sire pastures. Thank you to all of the breeders who utilized the promotional posters and catalog inserts describing Red Angus Marketing programs. 4. Red Angus people are the best! Though listed fourth here, this was probably my No. 1 “takeaway!” It was a pleasure to view the relationships between seedstock producers and their commercial customers. It’s a special bond! I have never experienced better hospitality and fellowship than when visiting with the Red Angus “family.” Purebred and commercial breeders welcomed me into their families and homes to share meals, conversation and lodging. The highlight of my sale season was sharing great stories, insights and fun with the greatest people in the cattle business – the Red Angus family! As we move into this next cycle of production, some are calving, some are breeding, some are making decisions about next year’s sales and purchases – the list goes on. Wherever you and your family are in the cycle that is raising cattle, congratulations and “Thank You!” It was an honor and a pleasure to represent Red Angus during the 2016 bull sale season. Ochsner to join Red Angus Marketing Team Katie Ochsner, a native of Torrington, Wyoming, has been hired as an RAAA commercial marketing specialist. Ochsner, who is in the final stages of obtaining a master’s degree in Animal Breeding and Genetics from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, also holds a bachelor’s degree in Animal Science and a minor in Leadership and Entrepreneurship from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and an associate’s degree from Casper College. “We are excited to have Katie join the Red Angus team,” said RAAA CEO Tom Brink. “She brings a well-rounded background of cattle production experiences to our marketing team and is ready to provide outstanding customer service to the commercial cattlemen seeking to gain the Red Angus advantage in their breeding programs.” Ochsner is a fifth-generation rancher, who hails from a purebred Hereford and Angus operation. Being involved with the family business, she brings first-hand experience from the purebred industry, and has an extended knowledge of the cattle supply chain, as her family also owns a small backgrounding operation where they have fed their bull customers’ commercial calves. Ochsner is also a skilled livestock evaluator and was a member of the livestock judging teams at UNL and Casper College. “I’m looking forward to the challenge and opportunity as a marketing specialist with RAAA,” said Ochsner. “I believe I bring a background of experience and education that will allow me to help commercial cattlemen maximize their profit potential by using Red Angus genetics, and encourage them to take advantage of the marketing programs available through the Association.” Ochsner will be based out of Wyoming and will officially begin her position July 31, 2016. ■

Kevin Miller, Briggsdale, Colorado, has been selected as chairman. “This group of beef industry leaders has a diverse background and years of experience representing all segments of the cattle business. They are known as innovative thinkers and have demonstrated success in growing their own personal businesses and in positively contributing to a wide range of other beef industry organizations,” said Miller when making the announcement. “I am looking forward to working alongside these individuals.” The following individuals will serve as the Top Dollar Angus Board of Directors:
• Kevin Miller is a partner in Croissant Red Angus, a familyowned and operated purebred Red Angus business in Briggsdale, Colorado. They manage 250 head of females on approximately 10,000 acres of pastureland and sell approximately 80 bulls each March. • Mark Gardiner is a fourthgeneration Angus rancher hailing from Ashland, Kansas. Gardiner Angus Ranch spans 46,000 acres in southwest Kansas. Each year, they breed more than 3,500 head of females for fall and spring
calving. Both their registered and commercial herds represent 36 years of stacked pedigrees from progeny-proven bulls selected from sire evaluation. The ranch has been total AI without the use of clean-up bulls since 1964. Embryo transfer began in 1987. GAR markets over 2,550 bulls annually in their spring and fall sales and via private treaty.
• Ryan Ludvigson is a partner in the family-owned Ludvigson Stock Farm. The firm includes locations in Billings, Montana, and Cushing, Iowa, and sells more than 900 Red Angus bulls annually throughout the U.S in several production sales.
• Richard Tokach is a fourthgeneration Angus breeder from St. Anthony, North Dakota. He has provided leadership to the industry serving on the board and as chairman of Certified Angus Beef, Inc. The family operation works with Beller Feedlot, Lindsey, Nebraska, to obtain carcass data on steers. The Tokach family market approximately 170 bulls and commercial replacement females each February. The family was honored as the 2015 CAB Seedstock Commitment to Excellence Award winner. • Clint Berry is a fifth-generation cattleman hailing from Gainesville, Missouri. Berry has worked with many in the beef industry and currently serves as a livestock marketing specialist working with Superior Livestock Auction evaluating and placing cattle throughout the U.S.

• Nolan Stone, Kersey, Colorado, is the general manager for the JBS Five Rivers Kuner Feedlot. The Kuner Feedlot is a 90,000-head, state-of-the-art cattle-feeding operation which is a model of the modern cattle feeding industry. Nolan grew up on a commercial cow-calf ranch in eastern Colorado where he remains an active part of the family operation. • Tom Brink, Denton, Texas, is the founder of Top Dollar Angus and CEO of the Red Angus Association of America.
The Board agenda will include a review of the qualification criteria for cattle of both Red Angus and Angus breeds into the Top Dollar Angus program. The Board will also discuss the next steps in raising additional capital to accelerate growth and assure the long-term financial stability of the organization including finalizing a prospectus. The Board anticipates finalizing their search for a business manager to oversee the dayto-day operations of Top Dollar Angus, Inc. in the coming weeks. Top Dollar Angus is a genetic certification and value-added marketing company assisting producers with high-growth, high-carcass-value Red Angus and Angus feeder calves. Top Dollar Angus has a large network of participating feedlots and other buyers which understand the superior value of high-end Red Angus and Angus feeder calves and are willing to purchase these cattle at premium prices. ■

Tag Program Breaks Enrollment Records
Red Angus marketing program momentum continues in 2016 The oldest USDA Process Verified Program in existence, the Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program, which cattlemen have come to recognize quickly with the distinctive yellow tag that denotes Red Angus-genetic feeder calves, is setting new enrollment records. For the first quarter of the calendar year 2016, all enrollment records have been broken. Chessie Mitchell, program coordinator, reports FCCP dangle-tag sales at 81,150, a 30 percent increase from the previous year comparison. The FCCP is an age, source and genetic verification program. Although now 22 years old, this USDA-verified program continues to be popular with farmers, ranchers and cattle feeders by allowing them to capture additional value in the marketplace by positively identifying Red Angus-sired calves. FCCP enrollment is free and the only cost is the 99¢ dangle tag or $3 EID-dangle tag combination. Kim Ford, president of the Red Angus Association of America, said that this news signals the positive impact that the breed is having on the beef industry. “This is an exciting achievement for the Red Angus breed,” said Ford. “Red Angus cattle can and do make a positive difference in every segment of the beef industry. Cattlemen and women are finding real economic value by tagging their calves sired by Red Angus bulls. That distinctive yellow tag quickly shows its potential to buyers in the marketplace. Red Angus calves are proving their value at the ranch as a replacement female and in the feedlot, yielding a valuable, high-quality beef carcass.” The FCCP program was first established in 1994 and has now enrolled well over 2 million head of Red Angus-influenced calves in the program. Kansas State University recently completed an independent study that utilized sales data from Superior Livestock Auction on over 3 million head of cattle. As published in the Journal of Animal Science, their findings showed a significant preference and price advantage given to those steer calves identified as Red Angus. Additional research completed and presented at the Midwestern Section of the American Society of Animal Science meeting in March in Des Moines, Iowa, showed a $10 advantage for the Red Angus heifer calves over all other breeds. Reporting Herd Inventories is a very important and quick process that must be completed to comply with Total Herd Reporting. This essential process allows for accurate billing and for the precise submissions of resulting calf crops that, by completing, avoid reactivation fees. How to Report Herd Inventory Login to REDSPro
Update the Disposal Code and Inventory season for appropriate animals. Select the Herd Management Tab. Select My Reports.
The downloaded report can be completed electronically and submitted via email OR printed and hand written and sent to the National Office. If no changes need to be made, please email or mail notification for the appropriate account number that no changes to inventory should be made. Email Herd Inventories to web.herdinv@redangus.org.
Select Fall Cow Inventory or Spring Cow Inventory depending on the calving season in which your cows are in. Simultaneously, select the default report Herd Inventory Report then select download.
Transfer Reminder Transferring ownership of animals after sale day isn’t always first on the to-do list, therefore the Association allows for 60 days to complete transfers without acquiring late fees. To make the process quick and easy, please double check buyer information before submitting because inconsistent information can cause incorrect or duplicate accounts. This becomes very important if customers utilize the Feeder Calf Certification Program or Allied Access tags as accounts must have adequate bull inventory to qualify for these programs.

Planned Mating Calculator The Planned Mating Calculator has been moved and can be found under the Data Search Tab in REDSPro. You no longer have to be logged in to access this tool. This has also replaced the EPD Mating Calculator option.

Red Angus Essential to Scholarship Winners’ Futures
The RAAA Junior Activities Committee is pleased to name each of the following five JRA members as a recipient of the $1,000 college scholarship. Tristen Fulton of Lexington, North Carolina, is the daughter of Rodney and Donna Fulton. She is currently a freshman at Iowa State University majoring in Animal Science. After graduation, she plans to pursue a degree in Veterinary Medicine. As an ISU student, she is active in Block and Bridle and the Pre-Vet Club. She is currently serving as a member of the Cyclone Classic Cattle Show and ISU Farm Tour committees. This summer, she will be working as an intern for Riverview, LLP in the Calf Ranch Division in Minnesota. Kacey Koester, daughter of Steve and Tracey Koester, is from Steele, North Dakota. She works and lives on her family’s registered Red Angus ranch. As a freshman at North Dakota State University, she is majoring in Animal Science with a Biomedical option. In high school, she was very active in 4-H, FFA, volleyball, and student council. At NDSU, she is a member of the NDSU Saddle and Sirloin Club, Livestock Judging Club and the Pre-Vet Club. She is also currently serving on the Junior Red Angus Board of Directors representing the North Plains Region. Royce McPhee-Bayha is the son of Rita McPhee and Brett Bayha. He lives in Lodi, California, and attends Linden High School. This fall he plans to attend college and major in Agricultural Business with a minor in Milling Science and Management. Upon completion of his academics, he plans to go back to McPhee Red Angus to continue on with the family ranch in hopes to create a more efficient operation and grow the size of the operation. 32 American Red Angus Magazine n May/June 2016
Anna Miller is the daughter of Robert and Mary Miller. She hails from Linden, California, but currently lives in Stillwater, Oklahoma, where she is attending Oklahoma State University. Anna plans on receiving her dual degrees in Agricultural Communications and Animal Science. She hopes to head back to her home state to be an agricultural advocate and continue to work closely with Red Angus cattle. She is serving as a JRA National Director. Madelyn Mushrush is the daughter of Joe and Connie Mushrush. She is from Strong City, Kansas, and will be attending Kansas State University to study Animal Science. Mushrush plans to use the skills she has acquired from Red Angus to one day become a successful ruminant nutritionist. She has been on the Junior Red Angus Board for two years. Mushrush attributes much of her success to her parents and her grandparents. The committee is also pleased to announce Savannah Howard as the recipient of the $500 Dee Sonstegard Memorial Scholarship. Savannah Howard is a graduating senior at Crest High School in Shelby, North Carolina. She is the daughter of Ricky and Jill Howard. She will attend North Carolina State University in the fall and plans to major in Livestock and Poultry Science. She is an officer of the FFA, in the National Technical Honor Society, and is the first baseman for the Varsity Softball Team. She works at Cross Country Veterinarian Hospital and she loves showing Red Angus cattle. After graduation, Savannah plans to pursue a Consulting Veterinarian career, continue to raise and show cattle, and help to promote the Red Angus breed in the Southeast.

In the great lyrics of The Eagles’ song, Take It Easy, there is a line that says, “We may lose and we may win, though we will never be here again.”
JRA Update There is a lot of truth to this lyric. There have been lots of ups and downs while serving my three years as a National Junior Red Angus Director, such as saying good bye to previous Junior Activities Coordinator Dawn Bernhard and saying hello to the new coordinator, Kim Heller. When I look back through all of these ups and downs, they have helped me grow as a leader and as a person. Therefore, I will never be here as the same person again.

I have been involved in several organizations such as 4-H, FFA, National Honor Society, and others, and have gained a lot and grown as a person. However, if I were to measure what organization I have gained the most from individually, it would be the National Junior Red Angus Association. There is a lot of value in being involved in multiple organizations, but if the opportunity arose to only be involved in one organization, I would choose JRA. I have had the opportunity to experience so many amazing things by being involved in this great organization. I’ve traveled to Canada, across the country for Round-Up
and various other national director duties, been awarded the Outstanding Junior Red Angus member, won several scholarships, and so on. One of my major deciding factors to run for a national director position was that this organization had given so much to me and I wanted to give back to it. I figured the best way to do that was to become a JRA director which would not have been possible without the great membership of JRA.
So I’ll end with this. If you get involved in JRA – and I mean truly get involved – it will give you so much and you won’t regret it. There may be ups and downs along the way but I guarantee you will never be here again. So THANK YOU – thank you to Dawn Bernhard and Kim Heller, thank you to my parents Bruce and Tena Ketchum, thank you to my heavenly Father, and thank you to the National Junior Red Angus Association. Reporting Heifer Exposure Data is Key in Identifying Fertility by Larry Keenan, Director of Breed Improvement
As calving season has wrapped-up for most spring-calving operations, ranchers’ priority has now transitioned to the 2016 breeding season. Most producers are excited about all of the data collected on their new calf crop – birth weight, calving ease score, udder score of dam – and look forward to continuing to achieve their data-collection goals.
While it’s easy to focus data-collection priority on the calf, we must remember to continue collecting data on the female. As each breeder attempts to develop a herd of functional, fertile, productive cows, we must remember to collect data on the trait that many consider the foundation of a profitable herd: Heifer Pregnancy. One of the many advantages of Red Angus’ Total Herd Reporting (THR) program is the ability to calculate reliable genetic predictions on cowherdbuilding traits. The Heifer Pregnancy (HPG) EPD serves as the foundation cowherd trait. The data included in the HPG EPD calculation is very fundamental: Of the heifers exposed to breeding, which ones delivered a calf. Yes, it’s that simple. However, we must know which heifers were exposed to breeding before they can be included in the HPG EPD evaluation. Through general ranch management record keeping, the vast majority of members collect the needed information to include on the Heifer Exposure Report. These include beginning and ending date of breeding/exposure, inventory season (spring or fall) and
management group. It’s that easy: when you turned the bulls in and when you pulled them out. A couple notes: 1) If you are AIing your heifers, the beginning date should be your AI date and ending date should be when you remove the clean-up bulls; 2) If heifers are in different pastures and exposed to different bulls, use management code to indicate such. Submission of heifer exposure data is facilitated through the Herd Management section of REDSPro. Once logged into REDSPro, access the Herd Management tab/ My Reports. Within the default groups select the appropriate Spring/Fall Heifer Inventory and the Heifer Exposure Data default report. Once the report is completed, email the report to web.hfrexp@redangus.org. Producers should realize that the HPG EPD is the only selection tool that predicts an animal’s genetic merit for heifer fertility. Traditionally, producers have placed selection pressure on scrotal circumference (SC), as bulls with larger SC have been shown to sire daughters that reach puberty at an ear-

lier age. However, RAAA research has shown that SC is not an indicator of a bull’s daughter’s ability to conceive. In fact, the genetic correlation, which measures the genetic relationship between two traits of SC and HPG is 0.00. (For comparison, the genetic correlation between birth weight and weaning weight is 0.49.) The 0.00 correlation shows that if selection for fertility is based solely on scrotal circumference, no genetic progress will be made in the economically relevant trait of HPG. In reality, SC is largely impacted by growth, meaning high-growth cattle tend to have larger SC and lower growth cattle tend to have smaller SC. While puberty is a prerequisite to becoming pregnant, puberty is not a measure of true fertility. Red Angus’ THR program provides the necessary structure to facilitate the calculation of reliable Heifer Pregnancy EPDs. As members record information through the breeding season, the simple step of submitting the heifer exposure data to RAAA will provide the foundational information needed in producers’ pursuit to consistently generate functional, fertile and productive females. n

Conservation Spans Generations for Doherty Family by Teres Lambert for American Red Angus Magazine
A paragraph from an essay authored by 16-year-old Sean Doherty sums up the conservation history of his family’s three ranches that comprise Mesa de Maya LLC, located in southeastern Colorado:
“In the Doherty family, it has been tradition to break

tradition. My great, great grandfather left his home in Ireland and set up a land empire. My great grandmother went from knowing nothing about ranching to not only creating a successful ranching business but becoming a pioneer in rangeland management. My grandfather took a chance on a relatively new idea in Holistic Resource Management and proved its worth. It is now my father’s – and soon my brother’s and my – responsibility to maintain and elaborate on what generations before us have accomplished.”
One missing piece to Sean’s “breaking tradition” statement is that Sean’s grandfather also broke the family’s tradition of raising Herefords and introduced Red Angus to the ranch back in the 1960s. Today, Mesa de Maya LLC still raises straight-bred commercial Red Angus. “When I got out of college in 1964, a buddy and I went to AI school,” said John Doherty. “When I returned home to the ranch, I decided to conduct an experiment and AIed some of our Hereford cows to Limousin, Simmental, South Devon and Red Angus bulls. “Unlike some of the other calves, the Red Angus-sired calves arrived unassisted and I really liked the Red Angus x Hereford calves. They were red or red brocklefaced and looked really nice. John Doherty, left, and his son, Joe, said they see the imprint of John’s mother, Tiny, in all areas of the ranch. It was Tiny who made conservation a priority when she took over Mesa de Maya LLC in 1945.
“Knowing Red Angus was more for us, we sold our Limousin, Simmental and South Devon-cross heifers and kept only the Red Angus heifers.” Doherty said the Red Angus-sired heifers gained additional respect from him when they “laid down and calved unassisted and gave their milk.” Within a year or two, he discovered that, unlike their straight Hereford females, the ranch’s crossbred Red Angus females didn’t get pink eye and sore udders from snow blister. “We became sold on Red Angus,” said Doherty with a smile, “and the rest is history. “I gotta tell you, however, that it isn’t just our ranch that has switched to Red Angus. You see a lot of Red Angus in our area these days. In fact, you would be hard put to find very many white faces any longer. Red Angus works amazingly well here – and those that run the feedyards are finding out the advantages of buying Red Angus calves.” The Doherty family’s heifers and cows start calving Feb. 20, with a majority of calves born in March. First-calf heifers calve at Red Rocks – watched a bit closer than older females – and are fed hay and range cubes while calving. “This past calving season, we calved 80-plus first-calf heifers and only had to pull one calf,” said Doherty. “I probably wouldn’t have needed to pull that calf either but I did.” American Red Angus Magazine n May/June 2016 43
Conservation Spans Generations for Doherty Family He continued, “Our Red Angus females and bulls excel in calving ease. I have to hand it to the early breeders of Red Angus who concentrated on calving ease – and disposition – because their work has paid off for us today. Then, of course, I need to acknowledge the Red Angus breed for their growth traits such as conversion and gain.” Second-calf cows are looked at only once a day and are fed every other day. Doherty doesn’t feed hay unless the ground gets covered up with snow. Older cows calve in the open. Calves are worked late April to early May. Heifer calves are vaccinated and branded while bull calves are castrated, vaccinated, branded and tagged with a Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification program tag. The first bulls go in with the cows in May. Throughout the breeding season, fresh bulls replace other bulls every week to 10 days with more bull power used in the larger, rougher pastures that have multiple water sources.
This young calf will have another tag in his ear come branding time – a yellow FCCP tag. “Those yellow FCCP tags pay off when we market our steer calves,” said Doherty. “I can’t say enough good about having those yellow tags in our calves.”
Heifer calves are weaned in September – one month earlier than steer calves. Typically averaging about 525 lbs., the heifers are kept at the ranch until around Thanksgiving and then moved to wheat pasture located 100 miles away. If wheat pasture isn’t available, the heifers will go to a grow yard. They’ll return home for breeding weighing 800 to 850 lbs.
Drought, Grazing and Conservation Practices While about 600 Red Angus cows once grazed Doherty ranches, numbers are down to about 400 cows. The decrease traces to an on-and-off drought that started in 2002 and required tough decisions, including selling off their older females.
Steer calves are weaned around Oct. 1. They typically hit the scale in the 580- to 600-lb. range. The Dohertys precondition the steer calves at the ranch, then market them via satellite video auction. The same buyer from Kansas has purchased Mesa de Maya’s calves for seven of the last eight years.
With 2015 signaling the end of the latest three-year drought and being an ideal year for rain, John and his son, Joe, are now slowly building up numbers from within. They’re taking a slow and steady approach for two key reasons: 1) Raising their own replacements means they know the genetics and management behind their replacements; and 2) Slow and easy growth allows their grasses to recuperate. “Cows need grass,” Joe interjected, “and overgrazing is a costly mistake.” The ranches’ focus on conservation runs deep, tracing to John’s mother Lorean “Tiny” Doherty who was put in charge of Mesa de Maya in 1945 when her husband died unexpectedly. John was just 2 years old at the time.

“Prior to my dad’s death, my mom had no knowledge of the ranching business,” said Doherty. “Dad managed the ranch and Mom wasn’t involved. Everyone thought Mom would cave in and sell the ranch when Dad died. She didn’t.
“She accepted the 38,000-acre ranch as it was – land in rough condition, poor or non-existent water supplies, gullies carved from years of erosion and overgrazed native grasses – and was determined to make it a better ranch.” With Tiny at the helm, they drilled wells, constructed stock ponds, installed pumps and developed springs. They built erosion deterrents – spreader dikes, earth dams and diversion ditches – diverting water off the mesas to lessen erosion and disperse water to the rangeland. They also broke up or dammed old trails and roads to prevent further erosion, and built more than 71,000 feet of cross-fencing. This dynamic woman also oversaw a three-year pilot program that included taking grass clippings of pastures, reducing cattle herds, rotating cattle and supplemental feeding. She instituted a grazing program and mandated that overgrazed pastures be allowed to recover naturally and not be reseeded. Today, Doherty says his mom and her dedication to conservation is always on his mind, adding that Tiny knew every grass, weed, flower and species that grew. Joe nodded in agreement. “You can ride around anywhere on the ranch and see Mom’s imprint,” said Doherty. “If you want to stay in the cow-calf business, you have to focus on conservation.” To that end, the Dohertys destock heavily in drought and, drought or no drought, rotate pastures. Their goal is for the cattle to be in different pastures at different times throughout the year. The cattle are never in the same pasture the same time every year.
The Doherty family was the recipient of the 2009 Leopold Conservation Award that acknowledges individuals and families who demonstrate outstanding commitment, conservation and stewardship of their land. Mesa de Maya LLC was also a 2010 Region V winner of the Environmental Stewardship Award Program sponsored by Dow AgroSciences, USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Services, National Cattlemen’s Foundation and National Cattlemen’s Beef Association. Mesa de Maya LLC is comprised of three ranches:
1) Mesa de Maya Ranch is located 55 miles east of Trinidad, Colorado, and is the home of fourth-generation rancher Joe Doherty and his family. This 20,000-plus-acre ranch has a variety of terrains, and ranges in altitude from 4,879 feet to 6,758 feet. Grasslands dominated by blue grama grass, western wheatgrass and sand drop seed make the ranch the best of the three ranches for rangeland. 2) Red Rocks Ranch, where John Doherty lives, is located 40 miles southwest of LaJunta, Colorado. The ranch, named for its red sandstone canyons, has 21,000-plus acres of rugged terrain and canyon bottoms with native grasses: blue grama, sideoats grama, little bluestem and galleta. 3) The “Little Place” is located along the Colorado and New Mexico state line with 1,253 of the 8,000plus acres actually in New Mexico. The Red Rocks Ranch and Mesa de Maya Ranch are just 17 miles apart by the crow flies but 45 miles apart by road. Despite the closeness of the ranches, Mesa de Maya is 10 degrees colder in the winter and 10 degrees cooler in the summer. “The red rocks at the Red Rocks Ranch absorb the heat and make that temperature difference,” explained Doherty. Annual moisture for the area is just 12 to 13 inches during a typical year.
The Dohertys are strong proponents of the FCCP program and apply the yellow tags to calves every spring when they brand and vaccinate. Joe says savvy calf buyers are willing to pay more for calves when they know they are Red Angus and will perform in the feedyard.
Wildlife is abundant at all three ranches, with mountain lions a threat to livestock. Elk also can be a nuisance, as they have been known to tear down fences allowing cattle to wander off the ranches.

Conservation Spans Generations for Doherty Family “We only have one pasture that is the exception to that rule,” explained Doherty, “and special circumstances have us make that exception to the rule. We’ve found that drought forces us to be creative in our rotation,” he said with a smile.
While John pointed out that Tiny addressed the conservation priorities that prevailed at the time, he explained that conservation needs have changed through the years. Today, the Dohertys address invasive species, specifically cedar trees and prickly pear. “While we will continue to address specifics such as cedar trees and prickly pear, we can’t divert our total attention to them. We have to always be careful to look at every conservation practice and that includes letting our grasses rest and not overgraze so the root system can get down to moisture. If a root system is healthy, then above visible grass will also be healthy. “A diverse, properly-cared-for native grassland is critical to maintaining a healthy herd with high conception rates and good calf weights.” n
