The Way That Seems Right
Proverbs 14:12 says, "There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death."
When asked to write an article about the Red Angus female and reproduction, I immediately said, “Yes,” because this subject has been part of our family business for nearly 35 years. My dad raised three boys in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, as an elementary principal. My mother passed away when I was 8 years old and my brothers and I spent that first summer on a farm in southern Iowa with our grandmother. Agriculture immediately became my life's ambition. I was raised to believe that I could do anything if I gave it my all. This city kid grew up and became a farmer in the 1980s and began raising Red Angus cattle. As I grew in my faith and learned that I could do all things through my Lord when I yielded to him and his will. So what does the Red Angus female, reproduction, my background and Proverbs 14:12 have in common? I have a strong conviction that I cannot separate God's way and eternity from everyday life. My life experiences have taught me they are inseparable and we (humans) can come up with ideas and practices that seem right

but in the end lead to death – be it physical or in the form of bad decisions. In 1981, we purchased our first Red Angus cows and found they were more docile than our other cattle (DISPOSITION). The other thing we noticed is the Red Angus calves got up and nursed quickly (VIGOR). As our operation grew we realized that our Red Angus females stayed in the herd and bred back year after year (FERTILITY and LONGEVITY). Early in my career, I found a mentor in Rex James. Rex was a great source of wisdom and support. He was full of one liners like: "You always pick the good bulls and then you don’t think you can afford them. The good ones pay!” “It costs the same to feed a good one as it does a poor one.” “It’s about cow families (good cows reproduce good cows.)” “Know our cows. What will this bull do to improve this cow?”

Board Commentary Rex was guiding me to become a true stockman, or in the case of my wife, a stockwomen. We have come to believe that the mother cow is at least 60 percent of the offspring that is produced. With the desire and passion to become better stewards of our cattle and to see them become better, we studied pedigrees and breeding programs that had cattle that would take our program to the next level. We discovered the history behind the cow family (PEDIGREE). The next step is to study phenotype. Establishing a cow family requires good feet, because you are only as strong as the foundation on which you are built. Sound functional udders, depth of body, carrying capacity, gait and fleshing ability are all important (PHENOTYPE). The final step in the establishment of a good cow family is performance, actual data, birth weight, weaning weight, yearling weight, ultrasound data taken and com-
pared within a contemporary group and used to calculate ratios, EPDs, ERTs and selection indices (PERFORMANCE). PEDIGREE + PHENOTYPE + PERFORMANCE
Much has been made about the new tools (SCIENCE) available to help make genetic selection easier and rightly so. However, the importance of knowing the accuracies behind the EPDs and genomic data is vital to making sound breeding decisions. The Red Angus Association of America has this information available on its website at http://redangus.org/genetics/epd-possiblechange. The Red Angus breed is the fastest growing breed in North America. As we continue to grow, it is critically important not to forget where we came from (GREAT COWS) and the blessings bestowed upon us as stewards of this GREAT BREED! â–

Most-Favored Female in the Beef Business It’s official – the Red Angus female is the most favored in the beef business. Six years of price data from Superior Livestock compiled by Dr. Ken Odde of Kansas State University showed that Red Angus-sired heifers command higher prices than any other breed or breed cross. Why? Red Angus heifers bring more in the marketplace because they are in high demand as herd replacements. There can only be ONE most-favored female in the industry. Red Angus is exactly that! Listening to the marketplace is always instructive. Markets reflect the cumulative decisions made by thousands of cattle ranchers and farmers as they vote with their checkbooks in assessing the value of cattle sold throughout the nation. When it comes to selling heifers, desirability as replacements (or the

lack thereof) is a major value determinant. Heifers destined to become productive mother cows are valued much higher than heifers whose best use is in a feedlot. Given the price advantage of Red Angus heifers relative to other breeds, we must conclude that the maternal benefits of the breed are becoming more widely recognized around the country. Fertility, fleshing ability, docility, longevity and excellent overall productivity are all part of the package when it comes to Red Angus females. Those heifers are being rewarded on sale day because they will become industry-leading cows. That is precisely the message the market is delivering. RAAA’s Feeder Calf Certification Program has also played a role in making this happen.

Board Commentary The best genetics in the business will not bring all they are worth unless there is a distinct way to identify them. Yellow FCCP or Pro-Cow tags in the ears of Red Angus heifers tell a prospective buyer exactly what they are getting. Red Angus genetics + verified identity via the yellow tag = strong price premiums in the commercial cattle market. Benefits to Commercial Cattlemen A reoccurring theme heard from commercial Red Angus producers is that they are able to sell their heifers for nearly as much as their steers – sometimes even more. Let’s do a little math to understand just how beneficial this can be to a commercial herd’s bottom line. On marketing day, having
the most-favored female in the business does have its advantages! Suppose a typical producer sells 550-lb. steers for $190/cwt. ($1,045 per head) and 500-lb. heifers for $15 less at $175/cwt. ($875 per head). Thus, every heifer calf sells for $170 per head less than her steer mates which is pretty painful when you think about it. Given a herd with 100 calves born which sells 50 steers and 30 heifers – with 20 heifers kept as replacements – this $170per-head heifer disadvantage totals $5,100. That is more than a $50-per-head hit across the entire calf crop. If Red Angus bulls can reduce most or all of that heifer-to-steer
14 American Red Angus Magazine ■ April 2016
gap, as is frequently the case, their impact is huge. Not only have they created value-added heifers, but greatly improved profitability of the herd as well. Who wouldn’t like an extra $50 for every calf sold off the ranch? Turning out Red Angus bulls can make that happen. Market Leader for a Reason Again, there can be only one market-leading, most-favored female in the beef industry, and it does not happen by accident. Red Angus has appropriately been wearing that banner for the past 5 to 6 years. The market is rewarding those Red Angus females, but that’s only because those females reward the people who own them with extra dollars in their pockets. ■

Marketing Update
By Gary Fike, Director of Commercial Marketing
Where are YOU Going?
It seems I spend half my life in airports going somewhere to do something (usually bull sales!). If you truly want to see a microcosm of America, head to any airport in this fine country, and you will see it all! I could tell you some stories, but I digress … In Denver between flights as I’m walking to my gate, I look at each and every destination on the board: Nashville, St. Louis, Detroit, Albuquerque. I’m wondering to myself, “Self, where are all these people going? What are they going to do when they get there?” What can all these people possibly be doing? Business travelers, men in suits, women with small children in strollers, elderly people being helped along in wheel chairs, and the little carts carrying other folks in a big hurry, honking the horn at you to “get out of the way!” When I drive, I have a GPS (who uses road maps anymore?) which helps me find my way. When I fly, I am depending upon the pilot to know how to get that thing up in the clouds and get me to where I need to go – I rely solely on him (and the grace of God) to put me where my final destination lies on this trip. In a survey several yeas ago conducted by Drovers magazine, one of the questions asked was “Who do you rely on when making genetic decisions?” The overwhelming majority of respondents stated, “My seedstock provider.” You, as a commercial rancher, might as well have said, “My pilot.” You rely heavily upon your seedstock provider to set the course. They know, much like the pilot, where you need to go, what direction you need to head and where you need to land for your particular herd. Do I sell calves at weaning? Weaning weight EPDs become of utmost importance. Will I finish my calves in the feedyard? Yearling weight, marbling and ribeye area EPDs and the GridMaster Index should figure into the equation. Will I background steers and sell them as yearlings? Again, yearling weight EPD comes into play. 18 American Red Angus Magazine ■ April 2016
Do I keep my own replacements? HerdBuilder Index, Calving Ease Maternal, Calving Ease Direct and Birth Weight EPDs are your compass – not to mention Heifer Pregnancy and Stayability. Will I sell bred heifers to my neighbors or at a special replacement female video auction? All of these EPDs are a part of the road map, or GPS, to aid in your selection. Nobody can help you more than your seedstock provider in getting you to your destination. The level of trust that occurs here is huge, because you are literally betting the ranch on those decisions you make, and the trust you place in the ranch that is selling you the bulls you use is almost beyond compare. You depend on them to help you succeed in your quest to stay in business for the next several years, because those bulls are going to influence your calf crop for quite some time. And you know that. As you read this, you are thinking, “Dummy, I’ve already purchased my bulls for this year.” OK, so we’re past that point. You’ve bought your Red Angus bulls. Now, punch your ticket and complete your travel plans by calling the RAAA office and ordering your Feeder Calf Certification Program (FCCP) tags. There is no better time than now to be invested in Red Angus genetics, and this tag (the “yellow” tag) quantifies 50 percent Red Angus bloodlines and at NO TIME in history has the breed been more popular than it is now. If you’ve not read the news releases regarding the Superior data, you should do that now. The marketplace is paying significantly more money for Red Angus-sired calves than any other breed type; including Black Angus! There is no enrollment fee, and the tags are just 99¢ each. Far be it for me to spill the beans, but tag sales are up 20 percent fiscal year-to-date over last year. There’s a reason for that! As I close this article, it occurred to me: I don’t even know that pilot in the cockpit, and I trust him to get me there – at least you know yours! ■

Red Angus Tailored for Environment, Management at Holt River Ranch by Lindsay G. Allen for American Red Angus Magazine
The views and landscapes found throughout the Holt River Ranch are beautiful, and along these picture-perfect river banks and green hills are hundreds of Red Angus cattle enhancing the scenery and value of the ranch.

Breeding Season
Located in Graford, Texas, about an hour west of Fort Worth, Holt River Ranch is operated by Dr. Glenn Rogers, a fifthgeneration cowman who ranches on land originally purchased by his family in 1906. If his family history isn’t enough proof of Rogers’ qualifications for operating the Red Angus ranch, his 35-plus years of experience as a beef veterinarian should surely suffice.

AUCTIONEER:
Is AI the Answer to Increase Bottom-Line Revenue? by Trinity Lewis for American Red Angus Magazine
The practice of artificial insemination (AI) in cattle is nothing new, having been used since the early 20th century. As the cattle markets continue at a current lull – at least compared to last year’s prices – producers are looking to AI as a means for economic advancement. Dr. Patsy Houghton owns and operates Heartland Cattle Co. near McCook, Nebraska. Her company is the premier heifer development program in the U.S. having developed and bred well over 100,000 beef heifers to date. Dr. Houghton understands the demands of today’s cattle industry and is confident that AI proves to be a great resource to remain economically sound. Dr. Patsy Houghton, Heartland Cattle Co.
Larry Keenan, RAAA Director of Breed Improvement
“Used correctly and with proper management, AI is a very economical management practice. You are able to produce more high-quality, consistent calves through the use of highly proven AI sires,” explained Houghton. “For example, you have the opportunity to reduce calving difficulty resulting in increased numbers of calves weaned, while improving breed-back on cows and heifers. You might also improve growth genetics, resulting in heavier calves weaned. These, along with other important production traits, are always important to a rancher’s bottom line, but are magnified in their importance during down markets.” There was a time when the thought of AI having the financial advantage over a bull would have been laughable. However, when costs are calculated on a per-hundredweight-of-calf basis, AI pencils out to have the advantage. In her time working in beef animal

reproduction, Houghton has noticed a change in AI, mainly as it pertains to heifers. “Over the past 25 years, the use of AI in replacement heifers, in particular, has really increased. Replacement heifers lend themselves to the use of AI because you aren’t dealing with calves-at-side as a complicating management factor.” She went on to say, “The development of a number of effective estrous synchronization protocols (including breeding-by-appointment protocols) have helped make AI possible in both heifer and cow management programs. That said, there is still much room for growth for AI implementation in the beef cattle industry.” An obvious advocate for the use of artificial insemination, Houghton admits that it is not the best fit for every operation. “To ensure success, it’s important for every rancher to assess their particular situation prior to implementing an AI program. For example, do you have the technical knowledge, facilities and labor supply necessary for AI success? If not within your own organization, are you able to sub-contract a reliable group to provide you these necessities? Be sure you are organized and have a plan in place well before breeding season. Attention to detail is very important to the success of estrous synchronization and AI programs!”
Is AI the Answer to Increase Bottom-Line Revenue? Larry Keenan, Director of Breed Improvement for the Red Angus Association of America, estimated that an average straw of Red Angus semen costs $22 while the various vaccines and other equipment will cost between $20 and $40 per head. He noted that if producers pay close attention, they can take part in semen sales throughout the year and get a small break in cost. Keenan cautioned producers not to attempt AIing without knowing all of the requirements ahead of time. “Producers who have an interest in implementing an AI program into their operation need to research and fully understand the steps involved. Each step of the process needs to be carried out correctly in order to maximize conception rates. Learn about the various estrous synchronization programs and determine which one best fits your facilities, labor and cost inputs,” he said. Although AIing is a positive route to consider, both Houghton and Keenan stress that taking conception rates for granted would be a costly mistake. Keenan said, “I caution producers who think that since AI conception should get 60 percent of the females bred (this is ballpark percentage), then they can reduce their herd bull battery by 60 percent. Recall that the first step in the AI process is estrous synchronization, and those females that don’t conceive with AI will be coming back into estrous in a very short window (a few days). Therefore, ensure that you have enough bull power to cover 40 to 50 percent of your cows in that short timeframe.” Dr. Houghton noted that AI cannot take the place of sound management principles. “AI will not replace proper nutrition. If cattle are not in the proper body condition, you will
Although AIing is a positive route to consider, both Houghton and Keenan stress that taking conception rates for granted would be a costly mistake.
not succeed in getting cows or heifers bred, either through the use of AI or natural service. Likewise, if cows don’t have enough time between calving and breeding, or if heifers aren’t old enough to be cycling, the use of AI won’t fix those problems,” she said. “What about herd health? Have females been properly vaccinated and tested for reproductive diseases? AI should only be used in healthy, actively cycling females that are properly managed for success.” She also brought to the forefront the key role good genetics play. “The selection of proper AI sires is very important to the future of your cowherd. Service sire genetics must be matched to ranch grass resources to ensure long-term fertility success. This includes frame, growth and milk production. If you select for extremes in these production traits, but don’t have the forage resources necessary to support this level of production, you will either suffer long-term fertility losses in your cowherd, or develop a genetic base in your cowherd that requires expensive supplementation for breeding,” she cautioned. “It is also important to manage ge-

netic line-breeding and/or inbreeding which can result in diminished economic traits such as fertility, longevity and immune response. This requires ranchers to understand the genetic history of their cowherds in order to select outcross AI sires. Selecting outcross sires is possible both within breed and across breeds.” All in all, the two experts favor the AI process. Keenan said in closing, “The benefits of AI certainly outweigh the obstacles. There is no other technology that gives producers of any size the ability to use superior genetics at a very reasonable cost. The vast majority of AI sires are highly proven, which gives producers additional confidence when selecting bulls for certain traits such as calving ease. Finally, recall the benefit of having the majority of your calf crop in the first 30 days of the calving season. That’s a huge advantage when it comes marketing time.” Whether you choose to artificially inseminate this year, if you’ve done it forever or if you doubt you will ever do it, producers can rest assured that in the agriculture industry, cuttingedge technology continues to be developed ultimately helping their bottom line. ■

FCCP and Top Dollar Angus Bring ‘One-Two Punch’ in Feeder Calf Marketing
®
by Tracey Koester, ARA Magazine Editorial Coordinator
The Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) has been verifying age, source and genetics in Red Angus cattle for over two decades through the “yellow tag” Feeder Calf Certification Program (FCCP), hitting the 2-million-head-enrollment milestone this year. With the addition of Top Dollar Angus, ranchers have another program in addition to FCCP in which to add value to their Red Angus-influenced feeder calves. “The combination of FCCP and now Top Dollar Angus gives producers the ‘one-two punch’ in adding value to their Red Angus-influenced feeder calves,” said Tom Brink, RAAA CEO and founder of Top Dollar Angus. In January, the RAAA purchased ownership in Top Dollar Angus that will operate as a stand-alone – yet complementary – entity of the Association. Top Dollar Angus is a genetic certification and marketing-assistance company focused exclusively on high-growth, high-carcass-value commercial Red Angus and Angus feeder cattle. Top Dollar Angus has a large network of participating feedlots that understand the superior value of high-performing Red Angus and Angus feeder calves and are willing to purchase these cattle at premium prices.
sired calves qualify when both sires and maternal grandsires rank in the top 25 percent for $Beef. Both straight-bred and crossbred cattle can qualify. Commercial producers interested in qualifying their calf crop for Top Dollar Angus must be able to document the use of sires and maternal grandsires with top 25 percent GM rankings. They can also qualify through DNA evaluation of their cowherd – such as Red Angus’ Herd Navigator test – if their herd scores in the top 25 percent for growth and marbling traits.
Top Dollar Angus Qualification In order for a calf crop to qualify for Top Dollar Angus, their sires and maternal grandsires (dams’ sires) must objectively rank in the top 25 percent of their respective breed for growth and carcass traits guaranteeing two generations of stacked genetics. In the Red Angus breed, that ranking is through the GridMaster (GM) Index. Angus52 American Red Angus Magazine ■ April 2016
“If a ranch turns out 10 bulls, for example, not every bull would need to rank in the top 25 percent GM,” explained Brink. “However, the average GM Index ranking of the bull battery does need to be in the top 25 percent.” To check the GridMaster rankings of their herdsires, ranchers can look up their bulls online at redangus.org through the “Animal Search” feature by entering the bull’s registration number, name or tattoos. The ranking is displayed under the “GridMaster” heading on the EPD suite (see page 54).
FCCP and Top Dollar Angus® Bring ‘One-Two Punch’ in Feeder Calf Marketing
Red Angus seedstock suppliers are also assisting their customers on the pages of their sale books by displaying the Top Dollar Angus logo or noting “Top Dollar Angus Candidate” in the footnote of bulls ranking in the top 25 percent GM. This designation quickly recognizes bulls that can sire calves with growth and carcass merit, and potential qualification for the program if mated to females sired by bulls with a top 25 percent GM ranking.
Marketing Once a herd qualifies and is enrolled, Top Dollar Angus will assist in marketing and promoting the calves whether the rancher is selling through the local sales barn, on video auction or via direct trade to buyers or feedlots. The Top Dollar Angus brand distinction will help producers garner a premium price for their cattle.
Through the program, cattlemen maintain control of their decisions – marketing venue, location, schedule – and, with appropriate timing, Top Dollar Angus will aggressively promote each group of cattle to prospective buyers, providing comprehensive service to make a successful transaction happen. Premium Pricing Typical premiums for Top Dollar Angus-enrolled calves range from $40 to $70 per head over the average market price at that particular time as adjusted for sex, weight and location. Over 90 percent of the time, Top Dollar Angus has been successful in helping cattle earn market premiums. Cost to Enroll The cost to enroll a set of feeder calves ranges from $5 to $8 per head. A typical Top Dollar Angus 250-head cowherd breaks down as follows: • Herd enrollment: $225 (effective for 12 months) • Marketing, Promotion and Branding: $400 ($4 per head on 100 head of steers)
In this example, the participating producer spends $6.25 per head to market 100 steers through the Top Dollar Angus program. If that producer later decided to sell an additional 50 heifers through the program, the additional cost would simply be $4 per head (an additional $200) since the cowherd was already enrolled for the year. Thus, a 250-head cowherd that ultimately marketed 150 calves through Top Dollar Angus would spend $5.50 per head sold. RAAA’s Involvement As changes occur in the commercial feeder cattle market bringing increased segmentation and differentiation, RAAA recognizes value in identifying high-end Red Angus feeder cattle through Top Dollar Angus to return more premium to the cow-calf producer. Third-party industry research has validated the increased value of Red Angus-identified feeder calves in the market place. RAAA anticipates the interest, demand and market value for Red Angus cattle to continue to grow, resulting in more profitability for Red Angus stakeholders. Cattle enrolled in FCCP will continue to be age, source and genetic verified, qualifying for feeder calf sales and free RAAA marketing opportunities such as FeederFax, FeMail and “Red Angus Certified” designation on live and video auctions. FCCP cattle also exclusively qualify for the Tyson Choice+ and Greater Omaha’s G.O. Red grids. Top Dollar Angus will complement the FCCP program by offering an additional value-added marketing option and hands-on assistance in matching a set of cattle to a buyer’s needs – the ‘one-two punch’ to gleaning markettopping premiums on sale day. To learn more about Top Dollar Angus and enrolling a qualified set of calves, email info@topdollarangus.com or call 303-478-4331. ■

Small Investment Yields Abundant Return on Cowherd Genetics

Calving season is underway or just completed for cattlemen across the U.S., and they will soon turn their thoughts to breeding season. Ranchers seeking to expedite genetic progress should consider Red Angus’ Herd Navigator DNA test before turning females out. The Herd Navigator test is a small investment that yields big results in cowherd success. McNeese University, in Lake Charles, Louisiana, is home to constant research of the agricultural industry, namely beef cattle. McNeese University Farm and Ranch Manager Darrin Goodwin used Herd Navigator this year for the first time. “We keep our top heifers for replacements and we keep in mind that ‘Pretty is as pretty does,” explained Goodwin. “We are excited to use this [Herd Navigator] technology with our AI program to make smarter decisions on genetic selection and then for our selection of how each animal will be utilized.” Using Herd Navigator is as easy as submitting DNA samples and the order form (found at redangus.org/genetics/dna-tools or by calling the National Office at 940387-3502, Ext. 10). The test is an investment of only $25 per animal. Because DNA tests are breed specific, producers of cattle with at least a 75 percent Red Angus breed composition will experience the greatest success. Red Angus Association of America’s Director of Breed Improvement Larry Keenan provided this ex-
ized in a genetic panel as compared to all Red Angus animals. Percentile rankings of the EPD suite, including Red Angus’ HerdBuilder and GridMaster Indices, as well as parent verification (if the sire’s DNA is on file), are all part of the Herd Navigator package giving commercial producers an unmatched tool for guiding their selection decisions.
ample. “The Herd Navigator test will accurately predict the genetic potential of females that were sired by a registered Red Angus bull and have a registered Red Angus maternal grandsire.”
Keenan explained that the information compiled from the Herd Navigator program can be utilized as a value-added marketing tool. “Producers who market replacementquality heifers as a major component of their operation can use the Herd Navigator to provide a genetic assessment of the marketed females to potential buyers. Imagine the additional premiums that could be rewarded to a group of replacement heifers that have an average HerdBuilder Index ranking in the top 25 percent.”
Herd Navigator is a strategic combination of the Red Angus database and a GeneSeek reduced-panel DNA test. The DNA of Red Angus-influenced commercial females is organ-
Having only been in the implementation stage for a couple of years, the Herd Navigator’s profound success is evidenced by the caliber of producers who use it and facilities endorsing it.

Small Investment Yields Abundant Return on Cowherd Genetics Clint Berry, a Superior Livestock Auction rep, is a strong advocate for Herd Navigator, touting, “It has been my experience that my customers featuring females sired by high-reputation seedstock sources always fight for the top of the sale. The fastest way to attract buyer attention and stimulate competitive bidding is by featuring females sired by – and bred to – proven genetics from seedstock sources whose breeding programs are based on supplying the needs of commercial cattlemen.” He continued, “RAAA's continued investment in their customers' profitability always gives Red Angus users an advantage over other breeds that can't embrace the concept of pull-through demand. Value-added programs like Total Herd Reporting (THR), EPDs based on the concept of
Economically Relevant Traits (ERTs), the Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program, multi-breed genetic evaluation and genomic-enhanced EPDs have all paid great dividends to Red Angus bull customers. The Herd Navigator is the next step in RAAA's commitment to their customers' bottom line.” Mike Kasten works with Missouri Show-Me-Select Heifer Corporation, a program targeted at improving production efficiency through increased use of existing technology coupled with a marketing component. He praised the Herd Navigator system for the results it provides. “This approach lets you know where an animal ranks for multiple traits so you know where that female stands. By providing the HerdBuilder and GridMaster indices, you give people the
62 American Red Angus Magazine ■ April 2016
option to simplify their choices. This is good for many individuals and the nomenclatures are not confusing. A lifetime of financial gain comes from knowing a heifer’s potential – whether it be good or bad – before you put her into your herd.” Goodwin summarized the attitude of many commercial Red Angus producers implementing the Herd Navigator program. “We have confidence that these genomic-testing techniques will help us select better heifers for replacements. It’s a long process but the data is there and we have confidence in the numbers.” Regardless of how Herd Navigator is used, it is sure to give producers the upper hand in ultimately increasing return on their cowherd genetics. ■

In Memory Pam Horsley
Pam Horsley, 54, of Council Hill, Oklahoma, departed this life on Feb. 20, 2016, at her home. She was born on Dec. 29, 1961, to James Thomas and Clara (Stradley) Worrell in Franklin, Virginia, where she grew up and received her education. In 1980, she graduated from Forest Glen High School and began working at the Naval Air Station doing clerical work. She met the love of her life, Barry Horsley, and they were united in marriage on February 12, 1981, at Holland Baptist Church.
dren: Meleah, Isaac, Acea, Brynlee, Hailey, Hadley, Wylie and Craig. Pam is also survived by her mother Clara Worrell of Suffolk, Virginia; her sisters, Cathy Darden and her husband Thomas; Kim Outland and her husband John both of Suffolk, Virginia; and Renee Wrenn and her husband Chuck of Franklin, Virginia; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other extended family and a lifetime of friends. As you honor the life of Pam, in lieu of flowers, memorials are to be made to the Red Angus Foundation Inc. in care of Red Angus Association of America, 4201 N. Interstate 35, Denton, TX 76207-3415.
She enjoyed knitting, reading, working in her flower garden, feeding the birds and she especially loved raising her grandchildren. Pam was preceded in death by her father, James Thomas Worrell, and uncle, George Johnson. She is lovingly survived by her husband of the home, Barry Horsley, Sr.; her children, Jamie Horsley Adams and her husband David of Muskogee; Barry “Cal” Horsley, Jr. and his wife Shannon of Council Hill; and William “Will” Henry Horsley and his wife Shannan of Arpelar; her grandchil-
Consumers will never understand our love and commitment for our industry if we don’t show them. Each Red Angus member has a story to tell, even in their local community and schools. There are kids, even in rural communities, who don't know the truth about agriculture. Huber EY Red Angus Reports Triplets
Colorado Mother and Daughter Team Up to Advocate By Beth Gaines
Pam kept very busy as a homemaker, loving momma and grammy to her eight grandchildren. In 1992 they moved to Kiowa, Oklahoma, where Pam worked as a bookkeeper at Edgemont Beef and later worked as an office manager for Arcadia Land & Cattle. In August of 2013, they moved to Council Hill, Oklahoma, where she began working for Burrows Construction in Ft. Gibson and also as a bookkeeper for Horsley Farms until her death.
understand the level of commitment we have in protecting our resources, including our animals. It is sometimes scary to step out of our comfort zones, away from our feed trucks, and share from our hearts. But it is important.
Common Ground, an advocacy group funded by the corn and soybean industries, released a video featuring familiar faces in Red Angus circles. Cindy Frasier and daughter Kelsey Pope of Limon, Colorado, were featured in a short video promoting animal care and welfare. This beautifully produced video shared the value and importance of caring for the livestock on their ranch in Colorado. The video can be viewed on the YouTube channel, findourcommonground. Their video is named “Thriving on Trust. Animal Welfare on U.S. Ranches.” Cindy and Kelsey’s story serves as a reminder that each of us in the beef industry has a powerful story to tell, and we should be willing to share our passion and care for animals with those who live in communities much different from our own who do not

March came in like a lamb – or rather a set of triplets – for Bryan and Emmy Huber, Huber EY Red Angus, of Jud, North Dakota, when one of their 10-year-old registered cows delivered the trio of healthy heifer calves. The calves are all doing well and eating on their own, although Hubers plan to find a foster dam for at least one of the calves. The triplets - named Pop, Corn and Butter by 7-year-old daughter Betsy weighed 48, 56 and 58 pounds respectively. They were sired naturally by a full brother to Six Mile Winchester. Teenage sons Isaac and Alex help during calving between basketball and FFA activities, and are active in the family farm and ranch during the summer. The probability of a set of triplets is 1 in 110,000 in beef cattle. n
