The new HERD-BUILDER Index recently developed and implemented by the Red Angus Association combines economically relevant EPDâ€™s (maternal, growth and carcass traits as well as fertility), and weights each EPD for its contribution to overall herd profitability. Designed for commercial producers retaining replacement heifers, this single index measure compares and ranks all Red Angus sires in the breed, to provide a single measure of expected profitability for every sire compared to all other Red Angus sires. 41 of the 50 highest ranking sires on the Red Angus Herd Builder Index are Beckton sires or descended from Beckton sires, including 16 of the top 20. In our annual bull sale on Tuesday, April 12, most of the 250 bulls and 50 heifers selling will rank in the top 10% of Red Angus breed. Many of the bulls in the sale will be in the top 1 or 2% of the breed, with an expected profitability gain over $15,000. Even the average bull in our sale will have an expected profitability gain of more than $10,000 compared to the average non-Beckton Red Angus bull. Dedication of Members Yields Accomplishments I am amazed at the accomplishments of the Red Angus breed, greatly in part to the dedicated membership and volunteer leadership. The Red Angus Association of America led the beef industry in the policy of handling genetic defects. There was not a feeling of “stick our head in the sand and ignore the problem,” but rather meet the challenge head on and be open and transparent. Other breed associations followed our leadership in designing their policies of dealing with these genetic issues. I guess imitation is the purest form of flattery. DNA Developments As DNA technology came on to the playing field, there was a great deal of discussion regarding its usefulness and how it was going to be used. At the time, we were dealing with 20K types of tests that were expensive and did not describe much at all. I remember thinking that we were years away from a viable test that was cost effective and able to describe more variation.

Six to eight months later we were dealing with 50K that added a lot of variation description. The genetics companies were already moving to 80K, which is the high density (HD) product that we use today. Now, we have gone from looking at a wide range over the DNA complex to identifying specific areas that are responsible for various traits. That has allowed the cost to come down so producers can take advantage of this technology. Plus, Red Angus had the imputation process analyzed by a third party to ensure that sound, scientific methodology was adhered to. So, in a short time we have moved into this technology that enhances the accuracy of the EPDs that we have come to know as industry standard of quality and predictability.

Commercial Nucleus Red Angus has focused on the success of the commercial beef industry. The profitability of the customers of all the members is important to success of the Association. Wherein lies the adoption of the indices. The HerdBuilder and GridMaster indices were released to provide an easier selection tool for the commercial cattleman. These indices’ sole purpose is to describe differences in profit between animals. This adoption had been slow in coming to Red Angus as compared to other breeds, but the Breed Improvement Committee and Board or Directors took a careful approach to ensure that the addition would make a better suite of selection tools. Favorable Future As we look down the road, I am excited to see what opportunities become available to enhance the ability to better describe the breeding value of animals. Profitability always plays into the equation of breeding decisions. Can we identify the genetics that will allow for better conversion? Can we identify genetics that will handle fescue toxicity? Can we identify genetics that adapt heat tolerance better? These are just some of the questions that have real economic impact, and I think can be answered and used to enhance the best-described genetics in the industry, RED ANGUS. Take a look at all of the genetic selection tools available to Red Angus breeders and take advantage of those that enhance your breeding program. There are exciting roads ahead! It is always a pleasure to work with great cattlemen, and the Red Angus breeders are great cattlemen. Thank you for that pleasure. ■

Right-Sizing Red Angus

What is the right size for the Red Angus breed? This question might be difficult to answer. However, there are many good reasons to believe the Red Angus breed can grow to become much larger and more influential than it is today – perhaps twice as large in the next 10 years – with a larger Red Angus population, bigger price premiums in the marketplace, and a more positive impact in the industry from ranch to consumer. That all sounds good, because it is good. Growth is a key indicator of success. Larger revenues that come from growing the Red Angus business are needed to make Red Angus breeders more prosperous and to fund RAAA programs that help keep the breed moving ahead. Various metrics are used to measure the size of U.S. beef breeds. During RAAA’s most recent fiscal year, Red Angus registrations totaled 51,878 (record high), while Total Herd Reporting cow inventories tallied 82,594 head (also a record). Another important numerical indicator is cattle enrolled in the Feeder Calf Certification Program, which came to

116,950 head last year. All of these metrics are valuable in tracking our progress. The over-arching objective of the new RAAA Strategic Plan is to grow Red Angus bull transfers by 8 percent annually during the next five years. Accomplishing this goal will result in nearly 50 percent cumulative breed growth by 2021. That would put Red Angus well on the way to doubling in size by 2026. Of course, that kind of opportunitycreating growth does not happen automatically. There will be a lot of hard work involved. Commercial cow-calf producers do not voluntarily offer their bull business to anyone. It must be earned over time. That is actually good news for Red Angus because we are well positioned to earn a much larger share of the beef seedstock business in coming years. Here are three identifiable strengths that will substantially enable the breed’s growth: (1) Red Angus breeders, (2) Red Angus selection tools, and (3) Red Angus cattle themselves. Ten Tips for Improving Ear Tag Retention Everyone who applies ear tags to livestock has had problems with tag retention. In this article, I will review the basic tagging techniques you may be aware of and hopefully identify a few new techniques that will help you get closer to that goal of 100 percent retention. #1 - Even slightly torn ears lead to lost tags

To be successful you must get the tag applied to the ear without tearing the ear. Most tag applicators have a stationary pin or needle that must be retracted from the ear before the animal jerks away. This is a guessing game for the producer and most find that they are successful about 80 to 90 percent of the time. Unfortunately, that 10 to 20 percent of the time – where the animal is quicker than the human – leads to torn ears and lost tags. #2 - Retention starts with application

ear. Visually divide the ear into four quadrants horizontally and vertically. When tagging cattle, always place tags on the inside half of the ear closest to the head. Leave room for an electronic ID tag to be placed even closer to the head. Reference the diagram provided for proper tag placement.

Most producers blame the tag for not staying in the ear. They find tags on the ground or see an animal without a tag and think the tag failed. This may be true, but in some cases it was lost because the tag was not applied correctly. Remember, tag retention starts with proper application. #3 - Take time to be precise

When working livestock, it’s not uncommon for the least experienced hand to get the ear-tagging job. This can be a big mistake if this individual does not have the proper training or the awareness about the importance of being precise with tag application. One must be sure to avoid the circulatory system in the ear and the cartilage that supports it. Severing a vein or artery is messy and may lead to frost bite and tag loss in cold environments. Breaking the cartilage may lead to dropped ears that may never recover from this injury. #4 - Location, location, location

#5 - Never tear the ear The primary goal is to apply the tag without tearing the ear. It sounds simple, but tearing the ear happens more than you might think. You might see that the tag is in the ear when the animal leaves the chute, but looks can be deceiving. Although it appears the tag is in the ear, the reality is that you tore the ear slightly when you put the tag in.

You want the ear tissue to heal quickly and snugly around the shaft of the tag. You do not want the tag to be loose in the ear after the ear has healed. Loose tags become lost tags. A loose tag will wallow out of the ear and the tag will be easily pulled from the ear if the animal rubs its ear against fencing, brush or other obstacles in its environment.

#7 - Remove twine or netting from hay bales

Twine and netting on hay is the most common reason for tag loss. When the animal feeds and then removes its head from the bale, the twine or netting catches the button or male panel on the back of the ear and breaks or separates the tags. You may find broken tags or whole tags on the ground around feeders, or they may fall out later as the animal roams around the pasture. Simply removing the twine or netting may improve tag retention to nearly 100 percent. #8 - Remove sharp edges

Check the environment for sharp edges where the animals stick their heads. Check all head catches, gates, hay rings and stanchions where rust or welds may be cutting the tags from the ears.

#9 - Use brand-name tags made from quality materials This is one area where you can get what you pay for. Most producers I know are looking for performance over price. Do you really know the true cost of a lost tag? It depends on your management scheme, but it's usually much more than what you paid for the tag. Name brand ear tag manufacturers use high-quality polyurethane that outperforms so-called “low cost products.” #10 - Make a new hole every time

Never put a tag in an existing hole in the ear. Remember the goal of healing? How do you expect the ear tissue to heal tightly around the shaft of the new tag if you are putting it in an old hole? Member Services Update Was your New Year’s Resolution for 2016 to find new opportunities for your operation? Great, these few helpful tips might be just the answer.

International Identification Letter The international animal identification letter for 2016 is ‘D’ – many find this beneficial for tag and identification numbers, i.e. animal ID. How, and even if, the letter is used depends upon the ranch’s preferred style. One suggestion would be to place in front of the ID number to identify bull calf, ex: C101; or if it’s a heifer calf to place the letter behind the number ex: 101C. To view a list of other year letters go to redangus.org/registration. Sires of 2017 Calf Crop Per the Rules and Regulations: All sires being used in 2016 to breed cows for the resulting offspring to be registered in 2017 must have a DNA sample on file for parentage. To request a DNA test kit, email dna-kit-request@redangus.org or call 940-387-3502, Ext. 10. The DNA order form can be found at redangus.org/genetics/dna-tools/resources.

Transferring Animals after Sold Transferring animals after sale day has many benefits to all parties involved and in return will keep the customer coming back to Red Angus-influenced animals. Benefits of Transferring: First, when completing the transfer process, submit transfers within 6o days of sale date to avoid late fees, otherwise transfers will generate charges.

Second, transferring the animal to the new buyer takes the animal out of your inventory. This is most important for females due to the fact that females (assessed at 16 months of age or greater) will be subject to Total Herd Reporting assessment fees when active on your inventory. Third, the new buyer will receive a free year subscription to ARA Magazine, provided the buyer is not already a member of the Association.

Finally, transferring bulls allows for the new buyer to participate in the RAAA’s Feeder Calf Certification Program or Allied Access Program. It also allows the buyer to utilize the Herd Navigator DNA test for commercial females and to sell FCCP calves on the Choice+ or G.O. Red grids.

Red Angus Association of America Acquires Interest in Top Dollar Angus by Beth Gaines, RAAA Communications Coordinator The Red Angus Association of America recently invested in an initial stock offering of Top Dollar Angus, Inc. RAAA President Kim Ford made the announcement at BrainTrust during the Red Angus activities held in conjunction with the National Western Stock Show in January.

"This is a tremendous day for the RAAA to become directly involved as an investor in Top Dollar Angus,” said Ford. “The Red Angus breed believes strongly in value-added genetic programs and has a long history of innovative thinking as a breed association. Top Dollar Angus is a pioneer in utilizing cutting-edge technology to provide differentiated feeder calf marketing based on superior genetics. We view this purchase as an investment that will bring greater rewards to cow-calf operations that consistently purchase high-geneticmerit bulls and match those genetics with good health management and nutrition programs. And if it's good for

commercial cattlemen and women, it's positive for Red Angus."

Tom Brink, founder of Top Dollar Angus Inc., will retain an ownership interest and will continue to serve on the board of directors, however his day-today activities in the operation will decrease. The firm will operate as a separate, stand-alone entity from the Association.

"In working with ranchers and farmers across the nation over the past two years, it is apparent that cattlemen with superior Red Angus and Angus beef genetics are actively seeking to differentiate their calves,” said Brink. “Top Dollar Angus helps accomplish that important task. By partnering with the RAAA, the program will be strengthened, become more visible, and be more able to successfully serve commercial ranchers and farmers. The beef industry's best calves deserve a premium price, and Top Dollar Angus is now in an even better position to help make that happen."

Top Dollar Angus is a genetic certification and value-added marketing company assisting producers with high-growth, high-carcass-value Angus and Red Angus feeder calves. Top Dollar Angus has a large network of participating feedlots, which understand the superior value of highend Angus and Red Angus feeder calves and are willing to purchase these cattle at premium prices.

Top Dollar Angus has been growing steadily, expanding to 11 states in 2015. “Partnering with RAAA will allow Top Dollar Angus to dramatically accelerate its growth plans,” said Brink. Top Dollar Angus will consider adding a limited number of outside investors in 2016. A board of directors is now being selected and should be in place mid-February. The board will include representation from the Red Angus and Angus breeds, and other related segments of the beef industry. ■

Though a Texas native, Carl Cluck hadn't lived long enough to see a 12-year drought. Heâ€™d heard about them. His grandparents on both sides started ranching in the 1920s; Cluck's father followed suit. They weathered their share on the High Plains in the Panhandle of Texas. This third generation cattleman had no desire to repeat drought survival history. Four years without a growing season on his Red Angus ranch near Gruver, Texas, dropping water tables and no room for expansion told him it was time for greener pastures.

The Red Angus cow is the foundation of the Cluck Ranch and has proven her worth through drought conditions and a major environmental change in the middle of breeding season.

In the Texas short-grass country, Cluck's Red Angus thrived when rains came and forages grew. “We had pretty phenomenal performance,” he said. “We could wean straight off the cow 650to 700-pound calves.” Cluck attributes such success as much to Red Angus as to blue gamma grass. In the span of his lifetime, he tried all types of cattle before settling on his favorite.

“I started off buying roping calves at age 14,” Cluck said. “That wasn't profitable. I was about 18 when I bought some commercial-type cattle. In my early 20s I got into registered Limousin and ran those for about 10 years. I went a few years and just took care of the family herd. Then I ran Black Angus for six or seven years. I sold all of them. I've been Red Angus ever since – going on about 12 years.” Cluck said, “I wouldn't have any other breed! With all the breeds I've messed with, you couldn't give me any other breed. The Red Angus have been good to me – financially, to work with them, deal with them. They are incredible!” Difficult Decisions Not about to part company with his cherished herd over minimal forage and fizzling water, a dispersal was out of the question. But what of the ranch itself? “My grandfather selected a great piece of property,” Cluck said. “He and my mother and dad developed it, put in the fences and watering systems and built the barns. It was a beautiful place and I was so engaged in what I had in Texas. For me to sell something like that, well, I did it for my kids. They wanted to live the lifestyle I've been blessed to live, and I so desired to give them that opportunity. There were some things that sparked a change. The drought got me off center and I could see the writing on the wall.” His young adult children provided the final catalyst to move due east, herd intact. “Both of our kids wanted to engage in ag,” Cluck said. “The operation in Texas was on a pretty big scale, but it wouldn't support all three families: myself and Christine; Carissa and our son-in-law R.H Whitten; and our son, Coldar.” Texas left no room for expansion and cow numbers had to increase to make room for the next generation. “We had 15 sections in Texas, and it took 25 to 30 acres per animal unit,” Cluck said. “During the drought, I basically jockeyed them around on milo fields, corn fields, neighbors' pastures, or anything I could fence. I put them through heck, the climate put them through heck, but those Red Angus cows survived it. American Red Angus Magazine ■ February 2016 39

Cluck Ranch on the Move with Red Angus I can't imagine going through that with a different breed.” The Clucks scoured the country side for new property from east Texas to Kansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma, he said. “A local banker suggested we look in Missouri.” They landed in Mountain View, Missouri. Missouri Move “Our son was the first one to come to the ranch in Missouri,” Cluck said.” Coldar took care of the cattle until R.H. and I could get there. He returned to college and has now graduated, so he's back on the farm. He's our numbers guy and tries to keep us grounded and not let us get ahead of ourselves. My boys are so energetic and enthusiastic. I'm just in awe at how they have thrown their hearts and minds into this and believe that this is their future. They have commitment and dedication and God has us all on the same page – you see a lot of families that don't pan out that way. Our kids love the Lord and they are doing their best to serve him. This is how we have chosen to do it.” In Mountain View the ranch is a little over five sections. “We have fewer acres,” Cluck said, “but in Texas we ran just

around 400 cows. Here, we have the potential to run 800 or better. We can feasibly double our cow-calf operation with less than half the land.” Welcomed Water Instead of 30 acres, it will take three acres per cow. But grass isn't the only blessing. On the new ranch, there is ample supply of H2O thanks to the former owners’ well digging and Missouri rainfall. The latter up from 16 inches during a normal year in Texas, to nearly 50 inches per year on average in the Show-Me State.

Cluck Ranch on the Move with Red Angus Cluck said it will take getting used to. “Where we were from, we had blizzards and unbelievable wind. Still, out there it is considerably drier. In Missouri, it is so quiet. All you hear are the birds and wildlife, not the relentless wind. The worst thing here is how wet it stays.” That's a problem they are willing to tolerate when water means grass and grass means beef. For the Cluck Ranch, nothing but Red Angus will be grazing the lush pastures on half of the property that is already fenced, with a water tank supplied by wells every 20 acres. Every section has four water lines totaling a mile long and running its entire length. That trumps the dwindling Ogallala Aquifer where Cluck watched water levels drop in the Panhandle 3 feet annually. The original owner built all the rock structures and developed the infrastructure of the ranch, and the Cluck family has plans to restore the buildings dating back to the 1920s.

The original owner of the Missouri property established the ranch in the late 1920s. “Dr. Doane built all the rock structures and developed the infrastructure of the place," Cluck said. "There are countless stories about the woman and the farm. The community is ecstatic about our plans for restoring this property and not abusing it.” After exchanging hands multiple times, the most recent previous owner invested significantly by installing wells and fences. “We feel extremely blessed and overwhelmed at how God worked out all the details for us to get this place,” Cluck said. “After being here and hearing from the local people, we have a better understanding and appreciation for what we bought and hope to be an asset to this community that has welcomed us so enthusiastically.” Favorable Future To fulfill their goals for herd expansion, the balance of the property needs brush and timber cleared, fences built and structures renovated. Their eyes look to the future as they conquer looming tasks. The fifth generation of Clucks, 15month-old Gracenne Whitten, is their inspiration.

Cluck Ranch on the Move with Red Angus “We are so very blessed to be able to raise her on the ranch,” said her mother Carissa, who gave birth to their baby girl just two weeks before the big move to Missouri. “In my opinion this is the best lifestyle. She will learn to be a hard worker, to be responsible, the value of life and so much more. I think that Red Angus cattle will give Gracenne a great future and she will have information to share and help future Red Angus cattle owners, as she grows up among the breed.”

“I think we'll be able to duplicate how well we did in Texas, and enhance it as we find the cattle that do the best and cull those that don't,” Cluck said. Son-in-law R.H. Witten will play a key role. “I just started AI’ing last year so I still have a lot to learn,” he said, “but it’s something that will really help us in the future. The focus is on AI’ing about 25 percent of the herd, with emphasis on yearling heifers.”

The Clucks believe their Red Angus will not disappoint. “We brought our herd 630 miles to Missouri in the spring of the year,” Cluck said, “right in the middle of the breeding season. It can be disastrous to touch them during breeding, but we were in a pretty desperate situation. God made a way through that entire time and I'm glad I had Red Angus, or I may have been out of business.” Even through the stressful, untimely transition, Cluck said 97 percent of his mature cows settled. The first- and second-calf females bred around 90 percent. This spring the breed up was slightly lower, most likely due to environment changes Cluck contended, but building a Missouri herd is officially underway.

Cluck doesn't anticipate any glaring breeding changes. “I started off with pretty decent cattle from the get-go and have have had no problem selling my females and steers well every year.” Whitten agreed, “With the set of cows Carl has already put together, if we focus on keeping plenty of grass, water and mineral in front of them, we should do great!” Customer Consistency The goal is that end product. According to Cluck, feeders like the consistency of red cattle. “They can bank on their performance,” he said.

“I use all registered Red Angus bulls and enroll in the Feeder Calf Certification Program, tagging all of my calves with the Red Angus yellow tag,” Cluck said. “That customer wouldn't buy them if they didn't have that tag verifying their Red Angus genetics. He also wants them hormone free.”

“The move was a very drastic change for all of us,” Cluck's daughter said. “For all the things that had to fall into place exactly right, it shouldn’t have worked for us, but we really have to give all the glory and thanks to God.”

On new turf, Cluck knows it will take some time to build a local customer base. “There are some select heifer sales we may try,” he said. “Word of mouth will help as much as anything. The quality of our cattle and our reputation will get around. There's not a lot of red cattle here, not like the numbers you see in Colorado, Nebraska, Wyoming or Montana. Compared to the blacks, we barely exist.” Cluck plans to change that. “I'm excited!” he said. “This year was a big test for us and our cattle. The cattle passed with flying colors.” Family Fortitude As they look back over the past couple of years, the family ac-

The family is now at home on the Missouri spread, and another miracle has them looking upward while remaining grounded. Christine was diagnosed with cancer just after arrival. In the midst of settling into unknown territory, she endured chemo and radiation treatments. “It was grueling,” Cluck said, choking on his words as he then declared his wife’s current healthier status. The Cluck's have weathered storms no family desires to face. They've clung to one another, counted on their faith and stuck with Red Angus. “God is about the only thing we can truly trust in,” Cluck said. “But I also believe in my family and the cattle, and I have a lot of hope for this land.” ■

You may have not realized it, but back in December just before the year end, taxpayers received an early Christmas gift. Congress finally passed the tax-law-extender legislation known as the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes (PATH) Act of 2015 that many people have been waiting for. Although, you could say it is a late gift because this legislation was retroactive for the 2015 tax year, which has been the standard operating procedure for Congress for the past several years. I don’t want to be too pessimistic so I will at least say this – they did go the extra mile and extend many provisions effective into 2016 and, in some cases, beyond that. For the first time in several years, taxpayers finally have clear tax legislation for a year before it starts. Okay, so maybe this ranks up there

with getting socks for Christmas when you were a kid, but at least this means you can do tax planning throughout the year instead of having to wait until the last minute. Below is a summary of the tax legislation that will affect many ranchers’ operations. Section 179 Depreciation Section 179 depreciation has been made permanent for tax years 2015 and beyond at the enhanced amounts. This means up to $500,000 of qualifying depreciable property can be deducted in the year placed in service. The phaseout begins at $2 million of qualifying property and ends at $2.5 million in which no Section 179 is available after that amount. Additionally, the limitation and phaseout are indexed for inflation for tax years beginning after 2015. This will

allow you to more carefully consider the tax impacts of capital expenditures you have budgeted for 2016 and beyond. Bonus Depreciation Bonus depreciation has been extended at 50 percent for tax years 2015 through 2017. This provision allows for 50 percent of the cost of qualifying property to be deducted in the year placed in service. There are special rules that accompany bonus depreciation that require the initial use to begin with the taxpayer; the tax depreciable life of the property must be 20 years or less, which includes all agricultural property; and the election-out-of-bonus must be done on a class-life basis. Bonus is somewhat limited simply because most taxpayers will use section 179 due to the high limit. Bonus is more useful for those pieces of property that do not qualify for section 179, such as machine sheds.

Merry Christmas, from Congress For tax year 2018, the bonus rate is set to be 40 percent, 2019 is 30 percent, and after that it is planned to be zero. Permanent Five-Year Waiting Period for S-corporations to Avoid Built-in-Gains (BIG) Tax This provision is only applicable to those taxpayers who are C-corporations and are thinking of converting to an S-corporation. The disadvantage of being a C-corporation is the double taxation at the entity level and the shareholder level when it finally ceases operations. This can create enormous tax liabilities because many ranches have very little basis in their property relative to the growth in value. While a liquidation of your ranch may not be on the horizon, it is always something to keep in mind because the earlier you can convert, the less costly it will be. The essence behind the BIG tax is that when your C-corporation

converts to an S-corporation you have to calculate the gain built into your assets. If you sell any of those assets you pay tax on the BIG at the highest corporate tax rate, currently 35 percent. However, this is only during the time period for which BIG tax is applicable. Historically, the BIG tax recognition period has been 10 years after the conversion to an S-corporation. Since the recession years of 2008 and 2009, the recognition period has bounced between five and 10 years. With this latest extender legislation the BIG tax recognition period has been made permanent at five years. With this shorter time period it makes the conversion that much more important to be of consideration and discussing with your tax advisor. The specific strategies to minimize the BIG tax are beyond the scope of this article, however, we’ll address those in a later publication.

In a time when commercial producers are demanding profit-maximizing genetics, Red Angus producers are stepping up to offer genetically superior bulls representing a decade of unrivaled breed improvement. This achievement is a result of Red Angus producers employing unmatched selection tools to fulfill their charge of providing commercial producers with reliable, profit-generating herd bulls. The Spring 2016 bull sale season will provide commercial producers with a tremendous opportunity to obtain genetics resulting from the best of the Red Angus breed. Evaluation of the most-used Red Angus sires is an excellent gauge of breeder selection decisions and its resulting impact on breed improvement. Specifically, through assessment of weighted averages – which accounts for the number of progeny produced by each sire and weights average EPDs accordingly – we are able to quantify the positive direction in which members are taking the breed. By comparing the 100 most-used sires from the reported 2015 vs. the 2005 calf crops, producers will notice phenomenal improvement in all Economically Relevant Traits (ERTs). Considering the power of ERTs and their direct impact on profitability, it should be no surprise that the genetic selection tool with the greatest improvement is the HerdBuilder index (2005 – $93 vs. 2015 – $142). Thus, Red Angus seedstock producers’ implementation of science-based selection tools has delivered an improvement of $49 per female exposure! As commercial cattlemen continue to rebuild the nation’s cowherd, the demand for superior cowherd-building

maternal genetics remains high. Red Angus seedstock producers have anticipated and prepared for this juncture as the cowherd-building set of traits (HB, CED, CEM, ME, HPG and STAY) is unparalleled by any other traits in improvement. This foresight provides commercial producers with an unrivaled suite of cowherd building ERTs with the added benefit of a decade of exceptional genetic improvement. Red Angus cattle continue to impress operators throughout the beef-supply chain as they excel in every segment. While Red Angus females thrive on the range, the steer calves remain in high demand due to their performance in the feedyard and on the rail. This is easily explained because in the past decade Red Angus producers have further increased the breed’s genetic superiority in maternal, growth and carcass traits. Red Angus Marketing Opportunities Keep the Tags – Keep the Premiums

The Red Angus Association of America’s (RAAA) commercial marketing services are dedicated to assisting stakeholders in not only marketing their Red Angus-influenced calves, but in acquiring a premium. For producers who verify their calves as Red Angus, the doors open to a variety of marketing opportunities where buyers, feeders and packers are seeking Red Angus-influenced cattle. These opportunities include free listings on the Red Angus website, free FeederFax eBlasts for load lots, identification in video and feeder calf sales and access to two Red Angus-exclusive quality grids. Feeder Calf Certification Program The first step towards profitability is for producers to enroll in the Feeder Calf Certification Program (FCCP) and tag their calves with the Red Angus “yellow tag.” The FCCP is the beef industry's first genetic, source and age USDA process-verified program (PVP), originating over two decades ago with nearly 2 million calves enrolled. Plus, enrollment is free – the only cost is the 99¢ panel tag or $3 panel-EID combo. With many age and source verification programs to choose from, it’s important to realize that Red Angus has the only PVP to hold the marketing claim of traceability to at least 50 percent registered Red Angus bloodlines. By verifying Red Angus genetics, producers are providing a more consistent end-product than cattle selected on a simple hair coat color. USDA provides certification of meat carcasses for a number of marketing programs that make claims concerning breed and carcass characteristics. Packer product lines making an “Angus” genetic claim require documentation from USDA verifying their Angus genetics, like the FCCP Certificate of Compliance. The Red Angus “yellow tag” is the ticket to higher market values, but in order for producers and feeders to realize those profits, they need to keep the tag. Producers must take the initiative to communicate with their feeders that keeping the tag means keeping the premiums. 84 American Red Angus Magazine ■ February 2016

How to Enroll Your Calves in the FCCP 1. Contact Red Angus at 940-387-3502, Ext. 2, or 940320-8316, to go through a short supplier enrollment questionnaire over the phone. Red Angus will ask general management, animal identification and breeding questions. If needed, additional documentation on breeding may be needed such as semen documentation, lease agreements or information on purchased bred females. 2. After all documentation is recorded, Red Angus will have the tags shipped directly to the producer. Calves need to be tagged prior to leaving the ranch of origin. 3. The producer will receive a customer enrollment agreement to fill out and return with a copy of their calving records. 4. Upon return of the customer enrollment agreement and calving record, Red Angus will issue a USDA-approved certificate of compliance.

It’s simple, easy and effective marketing designed to put more dollars in producers’ pockets by providing marketing opportunities without genetic restrictions. Pro-Cow The Pro-Cow program gives producers the necessary tools to identify quality replacement females. Red Angus females that qualify and are enrolled in FCCP are automatically eligible for Pro-Cow status. Pro-Cow is specifically designed to identify high-demand Red Angus females for ranchers who would like to utilize Red Angus genetics in commercial cowherds. Producers may choose to tag their heifer calves at birth with the yellow Pro-Cow tag instead of the FCCP tag. A white Pro-Cow tag is also available. Additional Marketing Opportunities The RAAA also assists stakeholders by matching buyers and sellers. The Red Angus Stockyard is an online searchable listing of Red Angus feeder and replacement cattle that buyers can browse on RAAA’s website, redangus.org. Roughly 19 million Americans participate in the sport of archery. That number represented approximately 8 percent of the nation’s population a few short years ago. The sport seems pretty straight-forward. Step up to the line, set your eyes on the target, aim, release your arrow and with any luck (read: skill), it sails directly into the center of the bullseye. When an archer has mastered the skill of consistently hitting the target at one distance, the target is moved. Ranchers and archers share many of the same qualities. We set our sights on a particular goal – an ideal cow or bull, perhaps – aim, release and, with any luck (read: skill), we hit the bullseye. And when we’ve mastered the art of consistently hitting that target, we move it. Either endeavor – archery or ranching – becomes increasingly difficult (impossible, really) when the target is moved after the arrow is launched.

Sometimes, new regulations have a way of making ranchers feel like we’re aiming at ‘moving targets.’ “They certainly add another layer of complication to management,” said J.D. Radakovich, general manager of Hoodoo Land & Cattle’s Western Ranches in Wyoming and Montana, who described his frustration as the ranch worked to comply with previous environmental regulations only to be told six months later that they had ‘overshot’ the target because the regulatory agency had moved it. The new regulatory bullseye that ranchers have in their sights is the Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) rule, released in October 2015.

“I don’t know the science behind the new VFD, but I’m hopeful that it will be reasonable and practical for ranchers to implement,” said Radakovich. He was unsure at this point what steps Hoodoo Ranch will take to comply with the new rule. He isn’t alone. The VFD rule seems like a moving target to many ranchers. Ready: What does the rule say? Per the VFD rule, all medically important antimicrobial drugs can only be used with appropriate veterinary supervision. The proper use of feed medications has also changed. Medicated feeds will come under the oversight and order of a veterinarian. The rule and its order are both known as a veterinary feed directive (VFD). Some describe the VFD as a “permission slip” from a veterinarian before a rancher will be able to use medically important antibiotics in livestock feed for the purposes of treating, controlling or preventing disease. The first time most ranchers may experience the need for a VFD is when they attempt to purchase milk replacer with an antimicrobial to help boost a young calf’s immunity.

VFD – A Moving Target or Part of a Targeted Plan? “Per the rule beginning on Jan. 1, 2017, ranchers will need a VFD from a veterinarian in order to purchase medicated milk replacer,” explained Beef Quality Assurance Specialist Lisa Pederson of North Dakota State University. Like her BQA counterparts across the country, Pederson and fellow Extension personnel are working to help ranchers, veterinarians and retailers understand the VFD and what their new roles will be as the new labels are approved later this year. Aim: What should ranchers do first? She said developing a good working relationship with a local veterinarian is one of the first steps some ranchers will need to make. In order for a veterinarian to write a VFD, he or she must have sufficient knowledge of a

herd to make a diagnosis and subsequent treatment plan. This is described as an adequate ’veterinary client patient relationship’ and, in general, it means that a veterinarian is personally acquainted with the keeping and care of a rancher’s animals by virtue of periodic examinations or timely visits to the premises where the animals are kept. The veterinarian should also be readily available for follow-up evaluation in the event of adverse reactions or failure of the treatment regimen.

“Generally, a ’veterinary client patient relationship’ has formed when a veterinarian has agreed to assume the responsibility for making clinical judgements and medical treatment plans for a patient and the client has agreed to follow those judgements and plans on behalf of the patient,” she said. The moving target part is that each state has a slightly different interpretation of what constitutes an adequate “’veterinary client patient relationship’ and ranchers should seek to understand their state’s definition. Once a ’veterinary client patient relationship’ is established, ranchers should work with their veterinarian to anticipate times when a VFD could be needed and work to prevent potential issues in their herd.

Sometimes changes in management – like nutrition or pen maintenance – can also be successful. Initiating a conversation between a veterinarian and nutritionist so they have a good working knowledge of your operation and your animal health ‘target’ may also be helpful. The good news is a VFD is valid for several months and can be written ahead of potential events. While the exact date of a potential break-out is itself a moving target, ranchers routinely anticipate things like calving and weaning dates – times of year when added stress may spur an animal health event. Having a VFD written ahead of time for such instances will help ensure targeted,

treatment of disease,” Pederson said. Fire: If an illness does occur, then proper diagnosis and treatment are the next targets that come into focus. When this happens, Pederson encourages ranchers to obtain a copy of the VFD and use the medication as directed on the order. Then, log the related animal health records on the back: date treated, why, dosage, route and location, withdrawal time and who treated the animal, in case the U.S. Food and Drug Administration ever initiates a spot check. “Ranchers, veterinarians, nutritionists and everyone in the production chain have a similar aim and that is to maintain animal health.” The VFD will simply become another arrow in the quiver. ■

Retained Ownership: Oh, the Pain of it All! by Gary Fike, RAAA Commercial Marketing Director

I think I have been talking about retained ownership of calves going on 33 years during my professional career as an Extension educator, specialist and industry representative. And yes, I’ve fed cattle myself, just to make that clear at the beginning. Retained ownership.

It is a pair of words that bring out a lot of emotion, including the gnashing of teeth and wringing of hands. Why do I keep talking about it? I love a challenge! I know, I know. I have heard all of the reasons why one does not want to retain ownership of calves. I know even

better the reasons why ranchers and farmers choose not to wean and precondition calves before shipping them off to the sale barn the first week of November – year after year. I don’t need an education on the former or the latter. I am not very smart, but there is one thing I do know. Quality beef matters. The price advantage of providing better beef to the consuming public has increased markedly over those same 33 years. The market place pays more for high-quality beef. I have never known a cattleman or woman who doesn’t think the calves they are producing and selling at the barn produce high-quality beef. Nobody ever says, “Geez, my calves really stink this year, and I’m not sorry that

the beef produced from them is substandard.” Have you ever heard that? Nope, didn’t think so. Time, after time, after time, the consumer has shown that they are, in fact, willing to pay more for higher quality beef product. That is, beef that grades at least USDA low Choice; even more so for upper two-thirds Choice and USDA Prime grades. Certified Angus Beef in fact, brought back the old USDA Choice grade by marketing the strength of their breed; marbling. Marbling = quality grade. The more marbling in a cut, the more flavor and juiciness will be found there as well. You get the idea. So here’s the question: If beef with too

Retained Ownership: Oh, the Pain of it All! much marbling in it is not in demand (people want lean beef, right?), why do packers pay $160 to $200 more per head for carcasses that grade Prime instead of Choice? But, I digress. So, how do you know that your calves are ending up in a whitetablecloth restaurant? You don’t – unless you retain ownership. You also don’t know how your bulls and females (your measure of genetic progress) are working out to meet that end. Chances are you’ve had a conversation with your calf buyer that went something like this. Seller: “How did those calves feed?” Cattle buyer: “Your calves did alright.” Seller: “How did they grade?” Cattle buyer: “Pretty good.” Seller: “What percent of the load went Choice?” Cattle buyer: “I don’t remember exactly

– maybe 70% Choice.” Seller: “Any grid premiums?” Cattle buyer: “Yeah, I think they got a little.” If you’ve ever had those conversations, you know that kind of information isn’t very helpful to you as a cattle breeder. But, while everyone wants the information, the cold reality is, you’re likely not going to get it unless you own the cattle at the time of harvest. You are not going to know how they perform in the feedlot (average daily gain, feed conversion, death loss, cost of gain, days on feed) nor are you going to know how they performed in the plant (dressing percent, marbling score, fat thickness, ribeye area, quality grade, yield grade, premiums, etc.). You’ll never know it. Never. You have 500 cows. After keeping back replacements (and death loss) you have

430 to 450 calves to market. Take one load (80 head) of calves and sell the rest (350 head) at the barn. Take that load, send it to the feedyard, and find out what they’re doing. Get a good sampling of sires and dams. Individually identify them and communicate with your feedlot operator that you want individual carcass data. This generally means you must sell on the grid. You want tag transfer. You want to match up the data to the matings. Be specific. It will be the best lesson you’ve learned in a while and it’s all good because you’ll know if you’re over the top or under the table. This information will allow you to truly evaluate your genetics. Plus, you now have more marketing information to share with potential buyers of your non-retained ownership calves next year – or maybe, just maybe, you’ll feed them all. n

Karr to Represent Ohio Cattlemen The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) members elected Tom Karr of Pomeroy to the OCA Board of Directors as a Director AtLarge in November. The OCA Board of Directors consists of 15 directors, representing 12 districts with three at-large statewide positions. During the OCA board meeting on December 15, Karr was elected to the executive committee as the member at-large and will be serving as a National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Director, representing OCA. Karr has been in the cattle business for over 40 years. Over time, he has gradually changed his operation to a purebred Red Angus herd and now has 175 brood cows and sells - age bulls and open and bred heifers. Karr also grows corn, soybeans and hay on 1,800 acres in Meigs County. Karr is extremely active in his community. He is a member of the Chester United Methodist Church, Shade River Lodge, Pomeroy York Rite, Valley of Columbus and Gallipolis Scottish Rite, Aladdin Temple Shrine, Trustee of the University of Rio Grande Board and member of the board of Farmers Bank and Savings Co. He is also involved with the Athens, Meigs and Washington County Cattlemen’s Association and the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association. Tom received the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association Seedstock Producer of the Year award in 2014. Keenan Recognized as 40 Under 40 award recipient Larry Keenan, RAAA Director of Breed Improvement, has been recognized as a recipient of Vance Publishing’s 40 Under 40 Award. Vance Publishing’s 40 Under 40 Awards program seeks to recognize the most innovative people in agriculture under the age of 40 – from animal and crop production, biotechnology and university researchers, to food and nutrition technology, agricultural equipment, agronomy and beyond – who will be instrumental in meeting the challenge of providing food and fiber for a growing global population. Keenan, who has a bachelor’s degree from Oklahoma State University and master’s degree from Kansas State University, has served the RAAA for the past nine years. “I have al122 American Red Angus Magazine ■ February 2016

ways been intrigued in the science behind the overall breeding of animals in the effort to make the next generation better than the current,” said Keenan. “The idea of developing tools and implementing new technology to allow us to do a better job of making a new generation is a rewarding challenge.” Melvin Leland, a Red Angus breeder from Sidney, Montana, offered words in support of Keenan for the honor. “His passion and diligence in animal breeding have elevated him to a level of prominence among his peers as a geneticist. He has been an active participant in the Beef Improvement Federation and currently serves as chairman of the Ultrasound Guidelines Council,” said Leland. According to Clint Berry, Gainesville, Missouri, a Red Angus breeder and marketing consultant, Keenan has unique skills that allow him to reach out to cattlemen and help them better understand the benefits of the technology. “Throughout the years, I’ve worked with numerous cattlemen at all levels, but seldom have I ever had the pleasure of working with a person that demonstrates as much knowledge, passion and expertise, and the ability to communicate highly technical subject matter in a common-sense approach with real-world impacts,” said Berry. Some of Keenan’s professional contributions include the development of the RAAA Herd Navigator test, as well as implementing many breed-improvement programs involving carcass-progeny testing, implementation of udder scoring, implementation of carcass weight and yield grade EPDs, development and delivery of the HerdBuilder and GridMaster indices as well as numerous research projects and resulting EPD model enhancements. Many professionals, ranchers and scientists wrote letters of support for Keenan in the nomination process. A packet of 19 letters of recommendation and validation was submitted in the process. Keenan was honored at the National Red Angus Convention in Grapevine, Texas, in September for his service to the organization.

Member News Pat is preceded in death by his parents, John and Pearl; brothers Don, George, Ralph, and sister Jane. He is survived by brothers Jack and Bob. Pat received an Animal Husbandry degree from Montana State University in 1952. He worked as a herdsman early on, and then was a fieldman and ringman for Western Livestock Journal, the Montana Farmer Stockman and finally the Western Livestock Reporter. In March 1957, Pat started sharing his opinions, comments and advice in the weekly column, “As I See It,” and continued to do so for 54 years. In 1961, Pat bought the Western Livestock Reporter. He taught himself to auctioneer as he drove miles and miles selling advertising for the paper. Auctioneering grew into a career where he has been recognized as one of the leading purebred livestock auctioneers in the country. Even after he retired, and with all his business interests, auctioneering was his passion and he dearly missed it.
