Build Our Youth for the Future This issue of the American Red Angus Magazine is about our future – the future of Red Angus, the future of the beef industry and the future of our nation. Officially, this is the “Junior Issue” of the ARA, which turns a focus on the youth of Red Angus. “The foundation of every state is the education of its youth.” So said Diogenes Laertius, as found on www.quotationspage.com. We must step up to invest in our youth in order to build the future. Remember, investment can mean many things. We often think only of monetary investment. But when it comes down to it, time, knowledge and attention are precious gifts to be shared.
As the parents of two daughters, my husband and I are investing in youth every day – investing in shoes, investing in the orthodontist, investing in time to run to town for another practice... The list is seemingly endless. Seriously though, there’s a Proverb (22:6, to be exact) that states, “Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.” To me this means that faith, character and integrity must be modeled and taught. Those things that “catch” at an early age aren’t easily dismissed.
So what does that have to do with the business of Red Angus, you ask? It has to do with the core. Beliefs. Values. The RAAA is guided by nine Core Policies. If, by chance, you haven’t read them, here they are: 1. The policy of the (Red Angus) Association is to discourage the more artificial practices in purebred cattle

production … and to place its faith instead in objective tests, consisting for the most part of comparisons within herds of factors of known economic importance and known heritability. By making this an integral part of the registration system, Red Angus breeders feel that even faster progress can be made toward the ultimate goal of more efficient beef production. 2. It is the Association’s primary role to promote the financial well being of its members, and uses this as the method for encouraging new membership. 3. The standing policy of the RAAA is that when the science exists to make a genetic prediction more precise and reliable, the science is implemented. This is overseen by the Technical Committee and not the Board of Directors.
4. There is no proxy voting in the RAAA. This policy was established in the Constitution and Bylaws at the onset of the Association to ensure that voting members were fully informed and up-to-date through their attendance at the Annual Meeting.
5. The Association’s general role in assisting marketing of the membership’s cattle is to have the best objectively described cattle in the industry and to provide the best service to our members’ customers (commercial producers). Although, RAAA promotes overall demand for the breed through activities such as national advertising, the Association does not take a role in the marketing of an individual member’s cattle.

7. The ARA Magazine is sent to all bull customers so, in general, the editorial content of the magazine has a commercial and technical focus, i.e. typical breed journal articles such as member profiles are avoided.
8. The role of the Association is to objectively describe reproduction, growth, maintenance and carcass traits utilizing the fewest EPDs possible to achieve this purpose. The concept of Economically Relevant Traits guides this process. 9. The RAAA actively seeks out and implements new technologies that are based on sound, scientific principles.

Roosevelt Sal Forbes, one of our founding members was a wonderful advocate of youth and youth development. Her legacy lives on as the Forbes family made a generous pick-of-theherd donation last month. But the Sal Forbes legacy reaches farther than that. She modeled and taught what are now the Core Policies to youth

through the years. Many of those “youth” are now members “with several years of experience.” The Red Angus breed is thriving and vibrant. It’s our responsibility to recall what has brought us together, rally around those principles and share them for future success.
“We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future,” said Franklin D. Roosevelt. With that, I encourage each of you to build up a young person. Whether you are an adult, or a young person yourself – we are all older and younger than someone else we know. I challenge you to invest your time, talent or treasure in order to build the foundation of a bright future. ■

Association Commentary Achieve It! Leadership
by Kim Heller, Junior Programs Coordinator At the beginning of the school year, I saw a media campaign of short videos asking students why they chose their school. The question was simply, “Why OSU?”
Not only did it immediately make me think of social media ideas for JRA, but it also had me thinking about the current RAAA campaign – Achieve it! – and why people choose to utilize Red Angus. The campaign continues to highlight the reasons “Why Red Angus?” – Profitability, Maternal, Added Value, Return on Investment, etc. We can take that campaign one step further and apply it to the Junior Red Angus Association – Achieve it! Leadership.
The junior association is designed to equip and prepare all JRA stakeholders to be leaders, innovators, stewards and advocates for the Red Angus breed, the beef industry and agriculture. Whether members are active on the state, regional or national level, our purpose is to prepare them with life skills to be leaders for our industry. With that said, our industry and its consumer is ever-changing; our program offerings need to reflect those changes. Our JRA Board is making a great effort this year to evaluate what we offer so we can continuously improve our programs to better prepare our youth to be leaders for the industry. They are looking for ways to engage more members throughout the country. They are focused on providing access to opportunities to all members. With a clear focus on leadership development and stockman skills, it is pretty clear, “Why JRA?” – LEADERSHIP!
New Database, Same Process
by Twig Marston, Chief Executive Officer Challenges provide us an opportunity to grow, improve and advance, and the transition to the new REDSPro database software has predictably presented a few growing pains. As we work through these trials we appreciate the patience of our members and

stakeholders as we continue to bring forth the most advanced and interactive database program available to any breed association. Daily progress continues towards a realtime data entry and retrieval database.
One challenge has been the registration of animals that are from foreign parents. A foreign parent, in RAAA terms, is any animal that is not in the RAAA database. An example is an animal registered with another association such as the Canadian Angus Association (CAA) or American Simmental Association (ASA). While the process to register calves from one or both foreign (non-RAAA registered) parents has not changed, we have received several questions on the proper protocol so we are taking this opportunity to refresh our members on the procedure.
In the event that a member is registering progeny sired by a foreign animal, such as in the case of AI breeding, the member can simply provide RAAA staff with the sire’s registration number from the other association. If a member would like to dual register an animal, the procedure is a little different and it is imperative that the owner in the original association is the same as the person requesting the RAAA dual registration certificate.
To make the dual-registration process as seamless as possible, members should bundle the following materials (hard copy or electronic) and send to the RAAA Member Services Department: 1) A copy of the foreign registration paper. 2) A completed RAAA registration application that includes all information required by RAAA. Please note that actual weights and weigh dates (not adjusted weights) are needed to make foreign (non-RAAA-registered) animals eligible for Category 1A or 1B, and R (Registered) status. 3) All genomic testing results should be included in the bundle to expedite the registration process and prevent the animal being placed on hold.

Differentiation
“Differentiation” is a word we heard a lot as we marketed Red Angus cattle this fall. The year 2015 has brought home the value of presenting your cattle uniquely through tagging programs, vaccination protocols, genetic verification, etc. Red Angus’ commitment to the commercial cattle industry provides significant differentiation for your herd’s genetics in the marketplace. The abstract, “Effect of Breed Description on the Sale Price of Beef Calves” (King, et al. 2015) clearly shows the extra value Red Angussired calves command in the market place. Now is the time for amplifying the genetic merit of your Red Angussired calves by utilizing the Feeder Calf Certification Program (FCCP) or the Allied Access (AA) program for producers utilizing HybRED bulls. With no enrollment fees, USDA veri-
fied status, and only 99¢ per tag, these programs continue to provide he most economical differentiation in the industry!
To enroll your calf crop in FCCP, make sure your bulls are transferred to you after purchase. The next step is a call to the Red Angus National Office at 940-320-8316, ext. 14, to take a short supplier enrollment survey over the phone. By enrolling your calf crop in FCCP, they become genetic, age and source verified, and with the Allied Access program, they are age and source verified through one easy process. Differentiation!
Another form of differentiation in the Red Angus breed is our youth programs. This issue of ARA focuses on the young members of our organization and with good reason. I have had the opportunity to interact with our Junior Board, junior members and their families at Junior Round-Up, Conventions, sales and shows. Folks,
these young people are a tremendous source of pride for Red Angus!
The Marketing Team had the opportunity to present a program to participants of Loaded 4 Leadership seminar at the National Red Angus Convention this September. Our focus as a Marketing Team was to explain how Red Angus staff serves a different role from other breed associations by primarily assisting in the marketing of commercial cattle. We were extremely impressed by the professionalism and knowledge of this group of young beef industry leaders! They showed us a level of differentiation from other young people that was quite impressive. The future of Red Angus is truly bright! This month as we focus on family, holiday traditions and the conclusion of 2015, I hope we all take a few minutes to reflect on the positive attributes of the Red Angus breed and its people. From youth programs to marketing Red Angus-influenced feeder cattle, Red Angus shows an unbelievable level of differentiation. All of us on the Marketing Team wish each of you a Merry Christmas and best wishes for 2016. ■

September and October invoices were created and sent from REDSPro. Therefore, the look of statements has changed. Your statement now only includes what you owe and past due amounts for certain time periods. The details of activity are not included with the summarized statement. However, they are accessible in REDSPro under the “My Account” tab.
Click on the invoice number for the itemized information.
To execute updates on these animals, access REDSPro, “Herd Management” tab, then “Download” tab. Here you can download the Quick (birth), Standard (birth and weaning), or Expanded (birth, weaning and yearling) file. To accomplish this download, a group will need to be created under the “Herd Management” tab, “Create Group.” Once the information as been added, please email to the National Office.
Transfers can also be accomplished with these templates, or you can submit the transfer information on the back of the registration certificate or Batch Transfer form and send via mail, fax or email to web.transfer@redangus.org.

With more data being processed in REDSPro, Member Data-REDS will become less effective. For example, currently if an animal has been registered in REDSPro these animals will have a registration number in the 3-million range. Such animals are not accessible in Member DataREDS.

As the processes in the RAAA office evolve with the new database, please continue to prepare as soon as possible for your routine sale-day requests.
DNA Early – Submitting DNA samples early can eliminate some of the hectic time associated with sale-day preparation. When utilizing DNA as a marking tool, make sure to send in early to meet ALL deadlines. Results are returned to the National Office in 15 to 20 business days after being received from the lab. If the results indicate a change to the animal, this will be updated in the database before being sent to the producer who submitted the sample.
Some might ask, “Do I Need to do DNA testing to make it easier on my buyers?” The answer is, “Yes.” Per the Rules and Regulations of the RAAA, there are many requirements that pertain to an animal’s registration status due to DNA requirements being met on sires, dams or even the calves themselves. The one that will most effect your producer buying bulls from you now is that bulls being used as natural service sires in 2016 will be required to have parentage on file for the 2017 calf crop to reach an “R” registration type. Sale Catalog Data Extracts (SCDE) Requests – SCDEs no longer need to be requested to be pulled by the National Office. The option is available under the “Herd Management” tab, “My Reports” in REDSPro.
Simply create a group of your sale animals or you can copy and paste the registration numbers you wish to pull. Then select SCDE/Pedigree to pull the animals data into the standard “.CSV” format that was previously being pulled by the National Office.

Transfer Sheets and Feeder Calf Certification Program – As a way to speed up the transfer process, please contact the National Office by emailing the Member Services department with a list of buyers’ names and addresses. We will then provide you with each buyer’s account number. This will help speed up and ensure that the correct buyer number is being used in the transfer process of registration papers to the new owner.
Correct transfers are very important in the enrollment of calf crops into the Feeder Calf Certification Program (FCCP). Many times duplicate accounts will get created for the same person, which can create an issue with bulls on inventory for the specific account number being used for the enrollment process. For more specifics on the FCCP program and the benefits, contact one of the RAAA Marketing Team members. A New Year’s Resolution Have you started thinking about your New Year’s resolution? Might you consider one that yields a great benefit – stockman, leadership and career skills? Make a resolution to get involved in JRA and be an “active” member.

Life at Tally Farms, a sprawling operation comprised of 1,200 acres of green pastures, a growing commercial herd of Red Angus cattle, and 300 acres of timberland is always in a state of movement. From the day-to-day responsibilities that come with operating a working farm such as feeding the cattle, fencing, weaning calves and clearing off the remaining timberland to make room for additional pastures and cattle, one thing is for sure, there’s always something for 78-year-old cattle farmer Joe Tally to do. Each step Tally takes is intentional.
The Beginnings The other half of Tally Farms is Joe’s wife of 55 years, Linda. “I do watch the cattle. If they get out I try to keep them herded off the highway. I’m not a good farmer,” Linda said with a smile. “I go out there with him to feed and keep him straight. The rest, I guess you could say, is merely back-up support.” Although humble about her role at Tally Farms, Linda, like any wife of a rancher, is more valued on the farm than she realizes. Tally Farms is located south of the small town of Forest, Mississippi, known to many as the Heart of The Deep South. “I was born in that old white house. My daddy, Lex Tally, had a few cattle, but mostly operated a lumber mill,” said Tally. “But, for as long as I can remember, I’ve always been interested in agriculture and livestock.” As a junior in college, Tally bought his first piece of land – a patch of 20 acres – with the intention of putting cattle on it one day. That same year, he purchased his first heifer, although he doesn’t remember the specific 26 American Red Angus Magazine ■ December 2015
breed. As time went by, whenever Tally had extra money, he’d scoop up one or two more head of cattle and any additional acreage he could buy. “I’ve always been a firm believer in buying land,” said Tally. “It’s a good thing. It’s hard to find pastureland here because everyone wants to buy it to hunt on and they just devalue the land by planting a whole bunch of trees on it. You can’t do anything with that.” In the late 1960s, he bought six Santa Gertrudis heifers out of Texas with plans to build a Santa Gertrudis herd. However, that all changed for Tally in the 1990s when he began selling his Santa Gertrudis cattle directly to feedlots and learned that feedlots heavily preferred Angus cattle due to taste and marbling. “I remember some of the guys at the feedlot tell me that my cattle at the time were finishing good and had good weight gain but that they were finishing out too heavy,” he said. “It stuck with me when one man told me that housewives didn’t want a 16ounce T-bone or rib eye. That’s when I began researching options in the Angus breed.”

Red Angus Deliver Success in the Heart of the Deep South Building a Herd Due to Mississippi’s hot climate, it’s not uncommon to have over 85-degree days for seven months out of the year with temperatures in the high 90s and over May through early September. Because of their natural heat resistance, Tally was immediately drawn to the Red Angus breed over the more common Black Angus hide.
“You take a red car and a black car and put it in the sun. Come back three hours later and tell me which one is hotter,” said Tally. “I always would see these Black Angus cows laying down under shade trees or lingering in ponds, but you won’t see a Red Angus cow doing that as much. You have less of a worry of heat with the Red Angus breed, and I’ll tell that to anyone.” After attending a Southeast Red Angus livestock sale in Alabama, Tally began building his commercial Red Angus herd and now, with over 400 cows and 25 Red Angus bulls, he is proud to say he hasn’t looked back since. “I’ve been more than pleased with the Red Angus breed, said Tally. “They’re the best breed there is because they tolerate the heat, they’re a more moderate weight while still
Because his herd has been his livelihood throughout the years, Tally understands firsthand that consistently adding value is the key to success. producing a good-sized calf, and they have good foot structure without a lot of hoof problems.” When Quality Counts Throughout the years, Tally has gained experience and now has maintaining the quality of his herd down to a science. His favorite way of doing this is through his heifer replacement program, which he implemented 15 years ago with the intention of developing 100 heifer replacements a year. In his program, his cattle are put through a series of tests throughout the year to ensure the quality he believes the Red Angus breed is capable of producing. First, Tally makes sure that any cattle
that are particularly wild go to the feedlot. “I’m an old man now. I’ve had problems with my knees and back and I don’t have time to keep cattle that are crazy or don’t produce,” he said. “I want limited labor so I sell them the minute I see something I don’t like. Because of that, I don’t have many problems. Why feed something all year that’s not going to produce or that gives you a lot of trouble?” After the first round of culling, Tally takes the yearlings off of buck feeders and bucket feeds them for 45 days to humanize the herd and ensure his reputation of raising extremely docile cattle continues. In January, those heifers are put with one bull per 15 heads for 65 days, which is three heat cycles for the average Red Angus heifer. In May or June, they are pregnancy checked and any that are open are culled. “The last thing a cattle person needs is a non-breeder or a slow-breeder,” he said. For those remaining, each of their pelvises is measured and any that don’t meet Tally’s 180-centimeter requirement are also culled.

I’ve only had to pull a few calves and most of those were just quirks of nature and not the cow’s fault. After that, I keep part of the heifers for replacements and sell the others to cattle farmers.” Tips of the Trade Tally will be the first to tell you that his cattle success hasn’t come without a few failures along the way. “Sometimes I hear where my workers may want to do something differently,” he said, “and I just tell them not to argue if they don’t write the checks.” All arguments aside, Joe runs a cattle operation that receives compliments from everyone he comes in contact with. When asked about some tips of the trade he’d like to pass on to others interested in building a Red Angus cattle herd, he said: “The cattle I have, I take good care of. I tell people all the time you have to keep your cattle in an environment conducive to breeding. This means you need to feed your cattle well and
provide good mineral supplements. Nothing peeves me more than folks trying to starve out a profit. I also think it’s helpful to keep your firstyear heifers separate from older cows until they are bred for the second calf. They are still unsure of themselves and can’t compete with older animals for feed. After they are bred with their second calf, they can be put with the rest of the herd.” Because his herd has been his livelihood throughout the years, Tally understands firsthand that consistently adding value is the key to success. “A cattlemen must add value to stay in business. He can do this in three ways.” Tally said, “First, wean and precondition calves before you sell them. Next, sell your cattle by the truckload. You can do this by pairing with other farmers until you are large enough to fill a truckload yourself. Finally, build a reputation for selling quality cattle.” Tally went on to tout the benefits of the Red Angus Association of Amer-
ica (RAAA) to cattle producers by noting that the yellow tag Feeder Calf Certification Program, as well as the Pro-Cow female tag program, are effective ways to add value to your herd. The free-enrollment programs are available to producers with Red Angus-sired calves, and verify that the cattle are at least 50 percent Red Angus genetics, plus are source and age verified, opening up marketing avenues. “I’m glad to be a part of Red Angus,” said Tally. “The marketing staff folks are very knowledgeable and they want to help you add value to your herd.” Leaving a Legacy Tally Farms is a lot of things – it’s beautiful acreage, years of experience, an exceptional work ethic, family values and one heck of a Red Angus cattle herd. RAFI-Funded Research Will Contribute to Stakeholder Success by Trinity Lewis for American Red Angus Magazine
The Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) has risen as the industry leader in innovation. In a continual effort to enhance and promote Red Angus and Red Angusinfluenced cattle, the Red Angus Foundation, Inc., (RAFI) has provided funding for four research projects to better equip producers in making genetic selections and enhance the bottom line of their operations.
Next Generation Red Angus Fertility Evaluation According to Colorado State University’s Dr. Scott Speidel, reproduction and longevity are four times more influential than endpoint- and production-type traits to the profitability of beef cattle. Speidel and colleague Dr. Mark Enns are working to improve the accuracy of Stayability and Heifer Pregnancy predictions using a two-fold approach. “We are looking for any traits with a genetic relationship with Heifer Pregnancy and Stayability while also using RAAA genomic data to conduct the initial analyses to help identify the genes that regulate fertility,” Speidel stated. While the RAAA released the Stayability and Heifer Pregnancy genetic predictions in the late 90s, persistent effort continues to be placed on ways to increase the associated Accuracy (ACC) of these EPDs. Speidel explained, “Issues with longevity evaluations are associated with the length of time before observations are collected on a sire’s progeny and reproductive evaluations are associated with scarce data reporting and the reporting of data that typically occurs only on female animals. Red Angus Foundation, Inc. (RAFI) was established in 2010, charged with the purpose to enhance the Red Angus breed’s position within the beef industry and help secure long-term sustainable breed growth. Through the generosity of Red Angus members and stakeholders, RAFI was able to initiate and fund four research projects in 2015. “RAFI exists to help ensure the sustainability of Red Angus’ continued growth for future generations,” said RAFI Vice President Judy Kay Ferguson of Lewisville, Texas. “In the last five years, Red Angus stakeholders have given of themselves financially to advance the breed and, in 2015, the grants that were awarded will help us move forward.”
Ferguson encouraged continued support. “As the year comes to an end, it is the perfect time for us to consider making a contribution to RAFI, whether it be a cash donation, memorial or planned giving, so that the Foundation can continue to advance the breed’s education, research and youth efforts.” RAFI was organized under IRS code 501(c)(3), and therefore can receive tax deductible contributions. RAFI is comprised of three separate funds, and contributors may specify which they wish to support – Junior Fund, Sal Forbes Research and Development Fund and the General Fund.

RAFI-Funded Research Will Contribute to Stakeholder Success
The duo hopes that the identification of traits related to fertility and longevity will help researchers better understand the physiological relationships between these two traits and traditional production-oriented traits.
Speidel relayed that he and Enns are excited about the potential this research holds and said, “Currently, little research exists in the relevant scientific literature that explores the relationship between production traits and Heifer Pregnancy and Stayability. This project allows us to use genomic data to build upon the substantial efforts of Total Herd Reporting and the need to continually improve Heifer Pregnancy and Stayability.” Development of Novel Hoof, Foot and Leg Structure EPD in Red Angus Cattle With feet and leg structure playing a vital role in the longevity of cows and bulls, Dr. Robert (Bob) Weaber of Kansas State University and his team are looking into the development of novel hoof, foot and leg structure EPDs in Red Angus cattle. Their project focuses on developing a new feet and leg scoring system for the breed.

“Part of the project is evaluating different scoring scales to determine if a continuous scoring system does a better job capturing genetic variation and is more repeatable by scorers than a categorical system,” explained Weaber. We are also collecting a large number of phenotypes from Red Angus herds using the system to provide data for a prototype genetic evaluation of hoof angle, heel depth, claw or clove shape, knee and hock structure and shoulder and hip angle. We hypothesize that there are genetic associations between all of these traits and that scoring leg attributes may provide useful information on hoof and foot conformation.” His team will also investigate the relationship between feet and leg conformation traits with other traits like Stayability and culling data. Weaber hopes that his research will reduce and even prevent culling due to lameness allowing commercial producers to realize the full potential of their investment in high-quality seedstock bulls able to produce a large number of calves season after season. With anticipation, Weaber declared, “We are very excited to be working with Red Angus breeders to develop a prac-

Our Dakota Cowherd
We merged with Strawberry Ridge Red Angus in 2013 and moved that herd to Mandan, North Dakota this fall. We are working with the Randy Schmidt Family to run this “nucleus” herd just north of Mandan. The Strawberry Cows have a significant influence from the historic Larson Red Angus herd and specifically the Larson Flo Marie cow family. This herd has been selected for generations to maximize growth and maternal. We think that this herd perfectly fits the beef production systems in the Dakotas.
Our Dakota Genetics We have established a breeding philosophy over the yearsthat incorporates optimizing multiple traits without overemphasizing any single trait.We are utilizing several indexes to select our lines of cattle at this time which include the patented Leachman $Profit Index as well as the two new Red Angus indexes, Herdbuilder and Gridmaster. We are taking a strategic approach to where we target our various lines of genetics and we plan to emphasize growth, maternal and carcass for the Dakota region. Abundant resources in this area of the country allows for maximizing production outputs and we feel that we have the lines that can best meet producers’ production goals.
Our Bull Development
We are working with the Price Family who own and operate Missouri River Feeders near Price, North Dakota, which is just 20 miles north of Mandan. The Price’s have a long and historic presence in the area and run one of the best development centers anywhere in the country. The bulls are fed a high roughage ration designed to produce a 3.0 ADG with 0.2 of an inch of backfat. Dr. Matt Spangler of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln theorized there is a statistical problem when trying to predict more things than there are animals to use in the research process. In his opinion, haplotypes will alleviate that problem by predicting DNA variations that happen in sets.
“This dramatically reduces this statistical problem and has the potential to improve the accuracy of genomic selection within breed, and better identify the genetic mutations that are actually causing phenotypic differences. This same

method can – and has been – extended to analyze multiple traits at one time and is being extended to work across breeds and in composites.” The UNL researchers are seeking to improve statistical models to make better use of the data that is being generated by Red Angus breeders.
“We are hopeful that this research will not only enable improved within-breed predictions, but will allow us to develop genomic predictors using multiple-trait models thus borrowing information from densely recorded traits to help predict novel and expense-to-collect traits. The possibility of extending this to multi-breed approaches whereby we can actually form genomic predictions for one breed based on genomic information from another breed is extremely exciting” said Spangler. The bulls run in 10-40 acre fescue pastures which allows for plenty of exercise and muscle development. All of the cattle are developed for low input conversions.

We have had many customers from Missouri and the surrounding states over the years and we felt like we could better serve their needs by developing bulls closer to their area. RAFI-Funded Research Will Contribute to Stakeholder Success black hair coat in the Southeast. Due to hot weather, a humid climate and millions of acres of toxic tall fescue, the Southeast is a stressful production environment.
Dr. Parish is looking to the color of cattle’s hair to see if there is a solution as easy as raising black or red cattle that might make the difference. As part of her research, Parish purchased both Angus and Red Angus bred heifers late this spring. She and her team put them in a pasture at their research center that had both a pond and a water tank. Each animal is equipped with a GPS collar to determine where the majority of their time is spent. “We have anecdotal evidence that darker hair-colored cattle are standing in ponds while the lighter colored cattle are out grazing,” stated Parish concerning their earliest observations.
Another part of the MSU-ran project uses thermal cameras to determine the temperature of each of the females. “Some of the black-hided animals had surface temperatures of 130 degrees Fahrenheit. Red-hided animals were still hot but remained relatively cooler.”

Parish stated that a more extended window of research is imperative but she looks forward to the potential of the project’s results. “I am really excited that we have breed associations like RAAA that are willing to invest in research. Producers can easily select for hair color and it is something we can change in just one generation. We are very interested in looking at this in the long term with a larger population.”
RAAA’s Director of Breed Improvement Larry Keenan stated, “Thanks to the contributions made to the Red Angus Foundation, Inc., we are now in a position to invest those funds through multiple, innovative research projects. Without a doubt, the slate of RAFI-funded research projects have the potential to significantly contribute to the success of Red Angus members and commercial producers. We look forward to learning the results of these projects and, more importantly, putting that knowledge to work. It’s our hope that these initial RAFI-funded research projects will be the first of many.” Look for continual updates of these projects in upcoming editions of the ARA Magazine. ■

The NILE Stock Show and Rodeo hosted the National Red Angus Junior and Open Show Red Angus Show in mid-October in Billings, Montana. Frank Wedel shares Red Angus story with Russian trade delegation
Frank and Susan Wedel of Leoti, Kansas, recently shared the Red Angus story and touted the benefits that the breed offers to cattlemen around the globe.
The international trade mission was hosted by the Kansas Department of Agriculture. The four-day learning mission held Oct. 13-16, offered an opportunity for the Russian delegates to acquire information about the beef and agriculture industries. "It was an honor to host the delegation and share information about the Red Angus breed of cattle we raise and the benefits they offer the beef industry,” said Frank Wedel. “I was also able to explain some of the technology we use as well as some of the challenges we face in producing high-quality beef in our country. My perception is that while we are very different, we are also very much alike.”

Griffin’s graduation from Northeast Iowa Community College’s (NICC) Ag Business program in 1974 was only the beginning of a successful 41-year career that has earned praise for his contributions as a farmer, industry leader and advocate for higher education.
To celebrate and recognize his many honors, volunteer service and community achievements, NICC inducted Griffin of New Hampton, Iowa, into the college’s Alumni Hall of Fame this past October.
“My Dad encouraged me to enroll at NICC. At that time in the 1970s, going into farming wasn’t the greatest career move for stability and security. He said that I needed to get a college educa-

tion,” Griffin explained, who made the commute to the NICC Calmar campus every day with four high school friends enrolled in different programs on campus. Attending NICC locally to advance his education also allowed him time to continue his work on the family farm.
Internships through NICC formed a critical component of Griffin’s learning experience. His three off-campus internships included working for C&H Farm Service at New Hampton, Wiese & Son Hereford Ranch at Manning, Iowa, and New Hampton Farmer’s Coop (now named the 5-Star Coop) at New Hampton.
“Internships teach students at the College to get out of their comfort zone and learn new things. They are such an important part of the experience. They teach you how to live on your own and to take a different direction – to learn things that your mom, dad and family on the farm may not have taught,” he said. After graduation Griffin returned home to farm with his father and started a purebred Red Angus cow herd that is now one of the largest red (and black red gene carrier) herds in Iowa. In 2000 he received the Seedstock Producer of the Year award from the Iowa Cattlemen Association.
In 2015, he received the College’s Outstanding Beef Science Alumni Award and is a current member of the Beef Science Technology Advisory Committee. With the guidance of Nate Gebel, NICC Beef Science Technology instructor, Griffin and the advisory committee members planned and designed the new Beef Facility on campus that will educate local students, producers and consumers. “Young people need to know where their groceries are coming from. Unfortunately, lots of people are not exposed to how agriculture really functions in rural communities; what it takes to get the food to your table every day, whether it’s from the garden, dairy, hogs or beef,” Griffin expressed. “In today’s culture, using the correct terminology to educate consumers is essential.”
Griffin’s service to the farming community includes leadership positions on the local farmers’ cooperative board of directors, the county Extension council, 4-H leader and beef superintendent, church council, and the Chickasaw County fair board, where he served 10 years as president. Griffin is a member of the FFA alumni organization, served on the Iowa Beef Breeds Council, and is a current member and past president of the Iowa Red Angus Association. He has also served as a Chickasaw County Cattlemen board officer and is a member of the Iowa Cattlemen and National Cattlemen associations. The Griffin family has hosted county Extension beef meetings, pasture walks, field days and tours at their farm as well as the National Junior Red Angus Round-Up. The Griffin family also hosts Beef Science Technology student interns at the farm to provide an experiential hands-on learning environment.

One of the most unique aspects of the Minnesota Beef Expo is the Minnesota Youth Beef Experience Program (MYBEP), where 12 heifers were presented to youth who went through an intensive application process. Each winner is responsible for raising, breeding and maintaining complete records on care of the animal, while providing monthly progress reports to the original owner and the Minnesota Beef Expo. The breeders who donated heifers will also serve as mentors to the respective winners. Codi Payne, from Montevideo, Minnesota, received the Red Angus heifer sponsored by Jim and Ruth Rahman, Rahman Red Angus, and Greg, Kathy, Dylan & Kayla Sheehan, Sheehan Red Angus, both of Theilman, Minnesota, and members of the Minnesota Red Angus Association.
MYBEP is in its 12th year, and a celebration took place as the program’s 100th heifer was awarded, along with a reunion of many past donors and recipients. Gill Brothers Named as Top Industry Leaders
Bryan and Brent Gill of Timber Lake, South Dakota, were recently named as one of Cattle Business Weekly’s Top Ten Industry Leaders under the age of 40.
The brothers operate the ranch started in 1968 by their parents, Larry and Janet Gill, adding their own unique talents to grow the operation while improving the breed and marketing Red Angus cattle. Bryan’s talents include cowherd management and marketing skills while Brent’s detail-oriented ranch management is taking the cattle and farming operation to a new level.
Bryan has a long history of helping others market Red Angus genetics. He once managed livestock sales through his company Big Red Genetics and eight years ago he merged with Pfifer’s Auction & Realty focusing on helping people buy and sell Red Angus cattle.
Brent, along with hired help, completes the day-to-day tasks of managing the feedlot along with putting up the hay to feed the 500-head purebred Red Angus herd, 200 replacement heifers, 200 grass calves and the 400 bulls of which 250 of these they market in their annual production sale. Five years ago, Bryan launched the first ever Red Angus-only

feeder calf sale at Mobridge Livestock Auction in Mobridge, South Dakota, where over 5,000 head of feeder calves and replacement heifers are marketed annually.
“The sale has really developed the market for Red Angus replacement heifers and has had a huge impact,” said Bryan. “The buyers are wanting high-quality Red Angus females to add to their programs.” In addition to the Red Angus-only sale, the Gills have found marketing success with their calf buy-back program where they try to bid on 20,000 head of their customers’ calves every year and promote their customers’ calf sale dates on the Gill Red Angus Facebook page. The results are thousands of quality Red Angus cattle finding homes in feedlots or replacement herds. Bichler Recognized for Leadership Skills
Doug Bichler of Linton, North Dakota, was recognized by Cattle Business Weekly as one of this year’s Top Ten Industry Leaders under the age of 40.
Bichler is owner and operator of Bichler Simmentals & Red Angus located on the same family ranch where he was raised in south central North Dakota. He has spent the last 15 years taking cattle genetics seriously; picking the right pedigrees, using AI and embryo transfer and noting his successes and failures along the way. In addition to the emphasis he places on the right cattle genetics, is the proper nutrition program. He said he has made huge strides with his cattle’s nutrition, which includes attention to detail in water quality and proper minerals.
He custom feeds roughly 500 grass cattle and replacement heifers a year, applying the knowledge he has gained with his own herd. In 2005 he revamped his family’s facilities to support cattle feeding and installed an ag waste system that helps keep the pens drained well. Bichler enlisted the help of the Natural Resources Conservation Service to help make sure the waste system was environmentally friendly and up to code. Recently, Bichler was hand picked for the King Ranch Institute for Ranch Management: Excellence in Ag Leadership Program. A group of 20 men and women were selected from throughout the nation to take part in the Texas-based educational opportunity. Bichler had been part of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association’s Young Cattlemen’s Conference. There, NCBA’s leadership recognized potential in Bichler and suggested him for the King Ranch Institute program.
“Talk about humbling. It was a pretty big honor to have NCBA’s leadership say they saw future potential in me,” said Bichler. ■
