Exponential Potential
I remember a Red Angus slogan from when I was a kid. It was on one of those round buttons that pin on a coat or lapel, it was red with white lettering and it said, "Make 'Em See Red!" The advertiser in me says that hits some marks for a great slogan: 1) It gives a literal message; we want people to SEE Red Angus cattle; 2) It is paired with a recognizable saying. But here's where it falls apart – the recognizable saying that gives it a catchy double meaning – "Make 'Em See Red" – implies that we want to make people mad, and not just a little mad, either. "Seeing red" is really, really ticked off! That's not right. "Seeing red" conjures emotion. Let's remain calm and focus on facts. What got the Red Angus breed where it is today is dedication to quantitative data, sound science, economically relevant traits, the Feeder Calf Certification Program and Total Herd Reporting – just to name a few. All of these are fact-builders that give Red Angus producers something to hang their hats on. In other words, facts have gotten us where we are. So let's concentrate on the facts.
It seems there are facts aplenty lately about Red Angus – from heat tolerance to the great demand and high prices that Red Angus cattle are bringing. These are studies that can't be argued. Third parties are looking and wondering what it is about this breed. Red Angus is in the spotlight in many arenas. Here's another slogan for Red Angus in more recent times: "Red Angus – Popular for all the Right Reasons." That's correct!
6 American Red Angus Magazine ■ September 2015
With a wide array of positive traits and potential for profit, Red Angus cattle have become popular – and for good reason. After years of building on facts and developing a great breed, Red Angus is attracting large numbers of serious cattlemen.
With popularity comes responsibility. It is the responsibility of the Red Angus breed and its producers to embrace the facts that brought us to the dance. It is also our responsibility to embrace newcomers, learn their stories – where they came from, what they expect from the Red Angus breed – and then share the facts of Red Angus with them. There is exponential potential for growth in this breed and we all need each other to continue to grow and make America's cowherd predominately red. Now to a current slogan, "Ranch Tested. Rancher Trusted." This shows a maturing of our breed. We have been tested and we must continue to build, develop and earn trust. Trust is made stronger through honesty, integrity and, of course, FACTS.
So, as you read this issue of the ARA, I hope you'll be prompted to see Red. Red Angus, that is – and the facts, predictability and trust that will see us through.
Red Angus isn't a fad. We're a breed built on facts that, I predict, will continue to rise in numbers across the nation as producers continue to see 1) the value, reliability and integrity of Red Angus, and 2) the strength in cohesion in the continued marketing and development of Red Angus across the United States. ■

Programs Enrich Profitability The Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) has long recognized that commercial beef production is a key segment of the beef industry. That has directed more than just casual conversation amongst the membership – it has become a focal point of their programs designed to assist cattlemen in garnering the added value of Red Angus genetics. The cow-calf segment daily experiences the Red Angus advantages of fertility, mothering ability, low-maintenance costs and docility. RAAA goes beyond these important breed characteristics by providing programs that make a difference in capturing the feeder and fat cattle value. I encourage you to learn more and consider adding the following programs into your marketing plans.
Feeder Calf Certification Program Over two decades ago, Association membership had the courage to document and verify their customers’ product with the development of marketing programs. During the past 21 years, the Feeder Calf Certification Program (FCCP) has identified nearly 2 million feeder cattle and has given feeder calf buyers an advantage of using Red Angus-influenced cattle. The beef industry knows that FCCP-enrolled calves are USDA verified for genetics, source and age. Past program participants continue to use the “yellow tag” program year after year as a major marketing advantage over generic feeder calves.
This success encouraged documenting the added value of Red Angus feeder cattle, and the RAAA Marketing Team commissioned an independent study reviewing Superior Livestock Auction’s (SLA) data. This study confirms the value advantage of using and documenting Red Angus in commercial cowherds.
Using all calf sales from the last five years of cattle sold within SLA video auctions –
8 American Red Angus Magazine ■ September 2015
over 3 million head – the study confirmed the FCCP-tagged calves reaped $1.92 (or more) per hundredweight over their other-colored or other-breed contemporaries. Therefore, if you are selling 600-pound calves, that’s a premium of $11.52 or a profit margin of 1,000 percent over the cost of the 99¢ tag! Few opportunities in the cattle business can show a return on investment equal to FCCP. Red Angus Grids More recently introduced in 2014, Tyson Fresh Meat’s Premium Red Angus Choice+ Grid was implemented as an exclusive opportunity to capture the true value of Red Angus fed cattle. In its first year, the Choice+ Grid was able to reward cattle feeders an average of more than $22 per head in premiums along with individual carcass data.
The results received during the first half of 2015 indicate the average premium is going to rise to more than $50 per head. Again, this program takes advantage of the FCCP program and makes the “yellow tag” a necessity – and the first step in a marketing program that provides cattlemen the opportunity to realize the full value of their product.
Wanting to move forward and take advantage of expanding opportunities, the RAAA Marketing and Alliance Teams have added Greater Omaha Packing Co. as a fed cattle marketing partner. Greater “O” now offers the G.O. Red fed cattle marketing grid for FCCP-enrolled cattle. This program will reward Red Angusinfluenced calves that have industry-leading performance, quality and cutability. We urge everyone to consider Red Angus marketing programs. By investing a minimal amount in time and information, you can increase your profits. It’s as simple as that. ■

Marketing Update
by Gary D. Fike, Director of Commercial Marketing
Options are a Good Thing: G.O. Red Grid Announced The old saying used to go that you could get your Model T Ford in any color you wanted, as long as that color was black. My how things have changed! You can go to your favorite ice cream parlor that offers 31 flavors of that cold, sweet, treat. You can go to the pop machine at the local convenience store and get about any flavor of drink you want. Diet, you say? A shot of cherry in that Dr. Pepper? How about sweetened or unsweetened ice tea? Sandwich shops offer you all kinds of toppings, pickles, cheeses, onion, peppers and bread types. You can get it toasted or not toasted. You can have apple slices as a side, baked chips or sixteen different flavors of kettlecooked chips. Who doesn’t enjoy the opportunity to pick and choose?
Well, we don’t always get what we want, or the choices may be more limited. What I have found out, over time, is that once the door has been opened and consumers get to choose, other avenues seem to spread out before us. It’s no different in the cattle business. We have a great relationship with Tyson and the Choice+ Grid. Most of you know by now that the grid has been improved, and premiums for FCCP-tagged market steers and heifers are better than ever. We appreciate Tyson and their efforts to promote Red Angus cattle. That leads to more choices. Recently we met with the folks from Greater Omaha Packing located in Omaha, Neb. This packer harvests 2,500 head of high-quality cattle each and every day at their one location. Their focus is high-quality, branded-
beef programs. They source cattle primarily from Iowa and Nebraska, and offer premium beef products of every kind. They wanted to work with us on a grid that was specific for Red Angus cattle. We fit perfectly into that mix.
The “G.O. Red” (Greater Omaha) Grid is now available as a marketing outlet for FCCP-tagged cattle. It differs from the Choice+ Grid in several ways, which offers cattle feeders premiums on yield grades ($8 on a Choice, YG 1 and $3 on a Choice, YG 2). But I think what really helps this grid is the base price: $2 over the Nebraska Weighted Average on a dressed basis. This automatically adds $16 per head on an 800pound carcass. There are market premiums paid for Primes, but it is also important to remember that there are discounts for YG 4 and 5 cattle, and those with carcasses over 1,050 pounds. Perhaps you have above-average muscled cattle that will grade low Choice and hit the lower numerical Yield
12 American Red Angus Magazine ■ September 2015
Grade window. I believe this grid will fit that niche, and the people at Greater “O” appreciate Red Angus cattle and what they bring to the table. It is a known quantity and quality.
Our marketing team is determined to continue to find additional market outlets for Red Angus-influenced cattle. We think that the possibilities are even far greater than what we already have. The breed is experiencing unprecedented popularity. If you will note on page 40 of this issue, you will read about the Superior Livestock Auction data from 2010 to 2014 that quantifies a significant premium for Red Angus calves over other breed types. No, that is not a typo! Everywhere I go, everyone is commenting on the popularity of Red Angus cattle. Now is the time to move forward. This new grid is yet one more step in the right direction. Options are a good thing! ■

As we transition into REDSPro all understand that struggle and questions will happen at some point. Please DON’T hesitate to contact us with questions. We are here to help! Step-by-step tutorials have been created and are available under the Help tab. Also, online tutorials can be set up to help with any portion of the process.
What is the MultiBreed NCE? The National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) is the biannual process through which RAAA calculates EPDs for animals in the RAAA database. To ensure inclusion in the NCE, please provide all data possible. For Spring calves, if weaning data is not yet available at this time, it will be included in the next NCE. The EPDs that result from this process are released January (Spring EPDs) and July/August (Fall EPDs) each year. Next NCE Deadline • Fourth Week in October for Paper Submissions • Last Week in October for Electronic
What are the requirements of Total Herd Reporting (THR)? Each cow on active inventory (16 months of age and older) should report one of the three for each calving season: 1) calf record 2) reason code for the cow or 3) disposal code for the cow. Calving Season for Spring is Jan. 1 – June 30. Calving Season for Fall is July 1 – Dec. 31. Do I have to report calves born dead or that die shortly after birth? Yes, to give the cow a record for having had a calf (THR compliance). Sire, dam and birth date and/or year are required with applicable disposal code for calf.
What does the “regtype” indicate? R – Registered – Met all requirements for registration I – Incomplete – Pre-registered prior to reporting weaning weight and date. Once weaning data is reported, animal will move to registered status. C – Compute – Record on file giving the cow a record for having had a calf, but
the calf is not considered registered and cannot be transferred, used as a parent and will not display EPDs. H – Lease agreement not on file for natural mating of a non-owned sire U – Has not met all genetic defect requirements Z – Has not met DNA parentage requirements B - On hold for DNA exclusion in pedigree What information do I report when submitting calving records? The following is a list of fields of information for data reporting of calving records under THR guidelines. Please note, RAAA does have an open herdbook, therefore fields of information may vary for the reporting process. If you have questions, please refer to the Rules and Regulations or contact the Member Services Department • Dam Registration Number • Sire Registration Number • Calf ID and Prefix • Date of Birth or Birth Year • Sex • Birth Weight Group • Twin Code • Mating Code • Color • Horn/Polled/Scurred • Registration Code • Print Registration Paper • Name • Wean Date • Wean Weight • Wean Group • Feed Code
Increased Data = Increased Accuracy = Increased Reliability What data points can I report that will enhance my animals’ EPDs and Accuracies? For more information on EPDs, please visit the RAAA web site at redangus.org/genetics/ranchers-guideto-epds • Calf record with pedigree information • Birth weight, weaning weight and yearling weight • Calving-ease scores • Body condition scores • Dam mature weight • Udder scores – suspension and teat • Heifer exposure data • Ultrasound data • Actual carcass data • Genomic test
14 American Red Angus Magazine ■ September 2015
What are No Progeny Reports? Females listed on the No Progeny Report are active on inventory but have not yet reported a record for compliance of THR requirements for Fall 2014. The report should be used to submit progeny record, reason or a disposal code for the previous calving year. If information is not reported for each cow, the females will be subject to inactivation in October. If all dams were reported on the weaning data worksheet, then you will not be requested to complete a No Progeny Report. The report can be accessed online. A printed report can be mailed upon request. If needed, please request as soon as possible. Reports are due the third week in September.
Avoid Reactivation Fees Dams previously listed on the Fall Herd Inventory will be inactivated if a calf record or reason code (reason why there is no calf record) is not submitted for the year 2014. The National Office will send out a list of females that have been inactivated the last week in October. To avoid inactivation fees, submit a 2014 calf record or reason code by December 1 to avoid inactivation fees. Spring 2015 Weaning Worksheets Postcards were sent out in August as a reminder that it is time to report data on Spring 2015 born calves. The weaning worksheets may be requested as a hard copy to report data. Data may also be reported online. To ensure data is included in the next NCE, data should be returned by the end of October. DNA Overview: Why should I submit DNA early? • Reduce getting caught in a time crunch to complete a registration. • Samples may fail due to quantity or quality of sample and have to be resubmit. • Exclusions may result and have to try other animals.
What is the turnaround time? The turnaround time from the lab is 15 to 20 business days. This can vary though, depending on if the sample has to be reran because it failed the first time. Samples that fail are always ran twice to ensure the sample did truly fail the first time. This can take up to 30 days to receive results.

Is hair or blood sample better? Blood is better because hair has a higher statistic of failure. Hair also is more time consuming for the lab to extract the DNA. Due to these reasons the lab is now charging a $1 processing fee per hair sample. The only time having a hair sample is beneficial is if samples are being submitted on animals that are twins. This is because the blood between twins is cross contaminated in utero. How can I prevent any delay in results? Submit good-quality samples, complete paperwork and avoid cross contamination. Also, if sires or dams are not on file with RAAA, please have them sent to us from the respective lab. This ensures results are as accurate as possible.
Should animals be registered prior to submitting DNA? If at all possible, yes. This ensures that DNA results will automatically be updated in the database. This is required for samples that are being submitted for genomic merit (GGP-HD and GGP-LD). If samples submitted for all other tests do not have registration numbers at time
of submission, the member will be asked to provide once available or it will not be entered in database. Why do samples fail? • Cross contamination (fresh, wet samples stacked on top of each other, new needle not used for each animal, twins) • Dirt/Feces • Chemicals (insecticide, tattoo ink, lotion, GermX, etc.) • Exposure to extreme heat and/or sunlight • Not enough sample • Blood samples submitted on twins (cross-contaminated in utero)
What does Qualified, Excluded and Not on File mean? Qualified – The sire/dam of the tested animal were on file and the test confirmed parentage. Excluded – The sire/dam of the tested animal were on file, and the test did NOT confirm parentage. Not on File – The sire/dam does not have a DNA profile on file at the lab with SNP markers and parentage cannot be confirmed at this time
What if samples have completed parentage with the old technology (ISAG or Microsatellite)? If sires or dams have been completed for parentage using ISAG technology they do meet the RAAA requirements for A.I. sires and E.T. dams. However, if calves are needing to be parent verified to these animals, then the sample originally submitted will either need to be converted to the new technology (SNP) or a new sample will need to be submitted to be tested with the new technology (SNP).
DNA Helpful Tip of the Month: Weaning time always presents a great time to collect DNA samples. It allows for plenty of time before sale season to accomplish your goals. To be prepared here are a few ideas to help organize: • Order test kits from the National Office early. You can always order more than exactly needed. • If animals are being requested for genomic merit (GGP-HD and GGP-LD) testing, they are required to have a registration number to be able to be submitted to the lab. • Think about submitting an electronic order form to DNA@redangus.org to help speed up the submission process. ■

Red Angus Marketing Opportunities The Red Angus Association of America’s (RAAA) commercial marketing services are dedicated to assisting stakeholders in not only marketing their Red Angus-influenced calves, but in acquiring a premium. For producers who verify their calves as Red Angus, the doors open to a variety of marketing opportunities where buyers, feeders and packers are seeking Red Angus-influenced cattle. These opportunities include free listings on the Red Angus website, free FeederFax eBlasts for load lots, identification in video and feeder calf sales and access to two Red Angus-exclusive quality grids.
Feeder Calf Certification Program The first step towards profitability is for producers to enroll in the Feeder Calf Certification Program (FCCP) and tag their calves with the Red Angus “yellow tag.” The FCCP is the beef industry's first genetic, source and age USDA process-verified program (PVP), originating over two decades ago with nearly 2 million calves enrolled. Plus, enrollment is free – the only cost is the 99¢ panel tag or $3 panel-EID combo. With many age and source verification programs to choose from, it’s important to realize that Red Angus has the only PVP to hold the marketing claim of traceability to at least 50 percent registered Red Angus bloodlines. By verifying Red Angus genetics, producers are providing a more
consistent end-product than cattle selected on a simple hair coat color. USDA provides certification of meat carcasses for a number of marketing programs that make claims concerning breed and carcass characteristics. Packer product lines making an “Angus” genetic claim require documentation from USDA verifying their

Angus genetics, like the FCCP Certificate of Compliance.
The Red Angus “yellow tag” is the ticket to higher market values, but in order for producers and feeders to realize those profits, they need to keep the tag. Producers must take the initiative to communicate with their feeders that keeping the tag means keeping the premiums.
Red Angus Marketing Opportunities
Exclusive Red Angus Grids FCCP-tagged cattle have exclusive access to two grids – Tyson Fresh Meats’ Choice+ Premium Red Angus Grid and Greater Omaha Packing’s G.O. Red Grid. These grids are prime examples of the partnership between the RAAA and the packers that result in helping our producers get the most for their genetically superior cattle.
Through the use of the FCCP tags, producers and feeders have the opportunity to market their calves through either grid. Prior to harvest, the producer or feeder
should contact their local Tyson or Greater Omaha representative to start the process. In order to receive individual carcass information, the cattle must be wearing the FCCP combo panel-and-EID tag. The entity owning the cattle at harvest time is also the owner of the carcass data. Therefore, if a producer retains ownership of their cattle in a feedyard the producer will receive the data. However, if the feedyard owns the cattle when they are harvested, the feedyard owns the data and may not be willing to share it with the producer.
Allied Access
RAAA also has a program for producers utilizing Red Angus in a planned crossbreeding system. The Allied Access “green tag” verifies source and age through Red Angus Marketing Programs. It’s simple, easy and effective marketing designed to put more dollars in producers’ pockets by providing marketing opportunities without genetic restrictions.
This program also offers free enrollment. The only cost to the producer is the 99¢ panel tag or $3 panel-EID combo.
• Source Verified to Ranch of Origin • Group Age Verified
Pro-Cow
The Pro-Cow program gives producers the necessary tools to identify quality replacement females. Red Angus females that qualify and are enrolled in FCCP are automatically eligible for Pro-Cow status. Pro-Cow is specifically designed to identify high-demand Red Angus females for ranchers who would like to utilize Red Angus genetics in commercial cowherds.
Producers may choose to tag their heifer calves at birth with the yellow Pro-Cow tag instead of the FCCP tag. A white Pro-Cow tag is also available. 24 American Red Angus Magazine ■ September 2015

The RAAA also assists stakeholders by matching buyers and sellers. The Red Angus Stockyard is an online searchable listing of Red Angus feeder and replacement cattle that buyers can browse on RAAA’s website, redangus.org. Stakeholders who would like to list their cattle may submit a free listing at stockyard.redangus.org.
Two free eBlast services – FeederFax and FeMail – also spread the word about Red Angus cattle up for sale through livestock auction barns, private treaty and video auctions.
Red Angus has built alliances with each of the major video auction companies. Those relationships have created a tradition of success in marketing Red Angus genetics which are highlighted both on-screen and in the printed catalogs. Red Angus bull customers reap the benefits of competitive bidding when large sets of Red Angus cattle are grouped together on sale day. The RAAA continues to offer the industry’s most recognizable programs in labeling value in feeder and fed cattle as well as replacement-quality genetics in Red Angus females. Contact the RAAA at (940) 387-3502 for more information on Red Angus marketing programs or visit redangus.org.
Still the Best Value at 99¢ & No Enrollment Fees! How to Enroll Your Calves in the FCCP
1. Contact Red Angus at (940) 320-8316 to go through a short supplier enrollment questionnaire over the phone. Red Angus will ask general management, animal identification and breeding questions. If needed, additional documentation on breeding may be needed such as semen documentation, lease agreements or information on purchased bred females. 2. After all documentation is recorded, Red Angus will have the tags shipped directly to the producer. Calves need to be tagged prior to leaving the ranch of origin. 3. The producer will receive a customer enrollment agreement to fill out and return with a copy of their calving records. 4.Upon return of the customer enrollment agreement and calving record, Red Angus will issue a USDA-approved certificate of compliance. 26 American Red Angus Magazine ■ September 2015

It’s Still All About The
RAAA Implements Aggressive Feedlot and Carcass Data Collection Plan by Larry Keenan, Director of Breed Improvement
While Red Angus cattle have earned a solid reputation as being the commercial producers’ breed of choice when building a profitable cowherd, the true versatility of Red Angus is shown when the steer mates excel in the feed yard and garner substantial premiums when sold on the grid. The Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) has a storied history of leading the industry in the collection of data points necessary for the further refinement of maternal strengths. While the RAAA has always encouraged the submission of carcass data, it is now implementing a very aggressive, multi-point plan to increase the quantity and quality of feedlot performance and carcass data. Carcass Data Reimbursement Program Facilitating the collection of individual animal detailed carcass data in which the sire is known and in the Red Angus database has become a challenging task. However, the importance of such data is imperative for the reliable calculation of carcass EPDs. Recognizing this need, RAAA will compensate producers $10 per head for carcass data that meet the following requirements: • Sire known and in the RAAA database • Detailed Carcass Data: Hot Carcass Weight, Marbling Score, Ribeye Area, Back Fat • At least two sires represented in the contemporary group • At least five progeny per sire
Three new programs for Red Angus stakeholders will facilitate the collection of carcass and feedlot data, advancing EPD accuracy and opening the door for further research.
Carcass Progeny Test Recognizing the challenges of conducting a carcass progeny test in which young, low-accuracy bulls are tested against older, high-accuracy bulls, the RAAA provides such service through the Carcass Progeny Test (CPT). Producers who desire to ‘prove out’ the carcass genetics of a young sire through the CPT can do so by nominating their sire. If the sire is selected, the nominating producer is obligated to pay a $1,500 nomination fee to RAAA and contribute 75 straws of semen. In return, the producer is guaranteed detailed
32 American Red Angus Magazine ■ September 2015
carcass data on at least 12 progeny. In addition, RAAA and the test herd will make the best effort to collect individual animal feed intake data on 10 randomly selected steers per sire. Feed Intake – GGP-LD Exchange While Red Angus’ collection of individual animal feed intake records continues to grow, RAAA leadership desires to speed the rate of that growth. To incentivize producers to collect more feed intake records, a program has been developed and launched which will provide for the exchange of a GeneSeek Genomic Profile Low-Density (GGP-LD) test, or equivalent thereof, for each individual animal feed intake record. To ensure data quality, requirements to qualify for the exchange are: • At least two sires represented in the contemporary group • At least five progeny per sire RAAA’s aggressive effort through these three programs will provide Red Angus stakeholders with a wealth of information to include in the calculation of existing carcass EPDs, as well as the potential to research new economically relevant traits. To learn more about these programs contact Director of Breed Improvement Larry Keenan at 940-387-3502, ext. 12 or larry@redangus.org. ■

Video Auction Research Quantifies Value of Red Angus Cattle
Information shared at the American Society of Animal Science (ASAS) meetings held mid-July in Orlando, Fla., indicates that Red Angus calves are more highly valued by cattle buyers than other breed types. The abstract, entitled “Effect of breed on the sale price of beef calves sold through video auctions from 2010 through 2014” (King, et al., J. Anim. Sci. Vol. 93, Suppl. S3-pages 640-641.), contained data on 33,811 lots of calves, totaling 3.3 million head, sold in 116 video auctions. Breed description of the calves were categorized into five groups: English, English crosses, English-Continental crosses, Black Angus sired out of dams with no Brahman influence, Red Angus sired out of dams with no Brahman influence, and Brahman influenced.
“The fact that Red Angussired calves have outsold other breed types over a fiveyear period is a testament to the long-term value of the breed and its position in the market place.” - Gary Fike
Breed of the lot significantly affected the sale price of beef calves in these video auctions. Red Angus-sired calves sold for a higher price than all other breed groups. The average price of the Red Angus calves was $166.16 per hundredweight (cwt) – $7.38 per cwt more than Brahman-influenced calves; $3.61 per cwt more than English-Continental crosses; $3.30 per cwt more than other English and English–cross calves; and $1.92 per cwt more than Black Angus-sired calves.
Gary Fike, director of commercial marketing for the Red Angus Association of America (RAAA), said that this data is validation for Red Angus breeders. “It is no secret that Red Angus calves have proven their value in the arena of feedlot performance and carcass merit,” said Fike. “Red Angus-sired heifer calves used as replacements in the cowherd are also
40 American Red Angus Magazine n September 2015
recognized for their docility, maternal characteristics and longevity. Now data exists that quantifies that value in the marketplace.”
“Demand for Red Angus genetics is at an all-time high. The industry has responded, paying record prices for Red Angus bulls and replacement females this past winter and spring. The fact that Red Angus-sired calves have outsold other breed types over a five-year period is a testament to the long-term value of the breed and its position in the market place. Cattlemen and women who use Red Angus genetics can be assured that their selection choices are being rewarded from a financial standpoint,” concluded Fike.
Buyers of Red Angus bulls that have the bulls’ registration papers transferred to them are also eligible to enroll in the Feeder Calf Certification Program (FCCP) and tag their calves with the yellow Red Angus tag. The FCCP is a genetic-, source- and ageverification program. Buyers of calves with the distinctive FCCP tags in place can be assured the calves are at least 50 percent Red Angus. This tag also qualifies finished cattle for grid programs offered by Tyson Fresh Meats and Greater Omaha Packing. For more information about the abstract, contact Fike at 785-410-2608.
To learn more about the FCCP tags to enhance the value of your Red Angus-sired calves, contact the RAAA at 940-387-3502. n

Davis Knows Value of Putting the ‘Red’ in ‘Red Angus’ by Kim Holt for American Red Angus Magazine
Superior Livestock Auction’s western representative Jim Davis is no stranger when it comes to marketing Red Angus-influenced calves for his customers. He has worked with the Red Angus Association of America’s (RAAA) commercial marketing team for the past 15 years selling good Red Angus feeder cattle “The Superior Way.” The RAAA is a sponsor of Superior Livestock Auction’s “Video Royale” event each July in Winnemucca, Nev. This year’s Video Royale featured 137,000 head of cattle, a good majority of those from Davis’ western region. Davis, a 25-year Superior Livestock Auction representative based in Boise, Idaho, knows both sellers and buyers. “For 10 to 15 years all the buyers ever talked about was black. They wanted black calves, and the black calves always brought more than everything else,” he said.
Superior Livestock Auction representative Jim Davis and his wife Mary Sue coordinate the Video Royale sale in Winnemucca, Nev., each July.
“Now I can honestly say that the good Red Angus calves outsell the black calves and I know the Red Angus bred heifers will outsell black Angus bred heifers of equal quality every day. The Red Angus bred heifers are in hot demand right now.” Davis believes that cattle feeders,
such as JBS Five Rivers Cattle Feeding LLC, who feeds Red Angus Naturals, appreciate their value. “The red cattle feed really, really well. The problem is there are not enough of them.” A Friend of the Breed The relationship with RAAA and Superior Livestock Auction is very good, and Davis has also been recognized as a friend of the Red Angus breed. In 2012, he was presented with the John V. Robbins Distinguished Service Award – an accolade that recognizes outstanding dedication and service to the breed – for his contribution to the growth of Red Angus-influenced cattle in the western United States. At this year’s Video Royale sale, RAAA presented Grid Master Awards before the auction’s Region 1 Red Angus feeder cattle segment coordinated by Davis.
Davis not only videos and markets his customers’ cattle, but assists them in adding value through health protocols, improved genetics, nutrition and management advice and marketing programs like Red Angus’ FCCP.
54 American Red Angus Magazine ■ September 2015
Davis Knows Value of Putting the ‘Red’ in ‘Red Angus’ To qualify for a Grid Master Award, conventionally-fed Red Angus cattle must be marketed in at least 30-head load lots, reach a minimum of 85 percent Choice and Prime, have a maximum of 5 percent Yield Grade 4s and a minimum grid score of 100. Some of Davis’ top customers run cattle on the high-desert country of Nevada, Oregon and Idaho. A good number of them are Grid Master and Red Angus Commercial Breeders of the Year award recipients, including the likes of Otley Bros., DeLongs and Skinners. For 20 years, Davis proposed a better way to select bulls, believing that if ranchers invested in quality genetics, their calves would be worth more money at market time. He traveled the West, gathered ranchers together over steak dinners, and talked about value-added opportunities, stressing the importance of quality genetics. “We were just trying to get good genetics, and it’s really paid off,” he said. In an effort to assist his customers, he attends bull sales with them or buys bulls on their behalf.
Genetics are Premium Davis believes in the benefit of good genetics. “Buyers will pay for a product but they want to know for sure it’s going to perform. Therefore, they not only want to know about the health of calves but the genetics too,” he said. “Buyers are aware of bloodlines, reputable seedstock operations and how those cattle perform. They seek as much information as possible because of the great percentage of cattle targeted for different grids each with specific quality and yield grade, carcass and ribeye area targets.” The yellow tag identifying calves enrolled in the Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program (FCCP) guarantees at least 50 percent Red Angus bloodlines, qualifying them for the revamped Tyson Fresh Meats’ Choice+ Grid, Greater Omaha Packing’s G.O. Red Grid and “Angus” product lines. Calves wearing the Allied Access green tag are source and age verified for Red Angus customers using a planned crossbreeding program including Red Angus HybRED bulls. “The buyers know there are Red Angus-specific grids,” Davis remarked. “It’s worth more to those guys. That’s why I like to make it simple and have a Red Angus section and sell all the Red Angus calves together [in the Video Royale sale].”
Jim Davis has built a close rapport with his customers and his advice and dedication makes a difference when they receive their calf check.
For the cattle ranches Davis represents, he encourages them to provide information on the genetic makeup of the bulls they’ve had in service within the last five years. He helps them document EPDs according to how they rank within the Red Angus breed. Information on EPDs for carcass traits and Stayability, for example, are added to the “comments”
56 American Red Angus Magazine ■ September 2015
Davis, a Superior rep for 25 years, has seen a premium shift toward Red Angus-influenced cattle. section of the catalog listing. “I think the buyers really look at it,” he said, “especially if they’re buying females and want to know traits such as longevity.” In order for calves to qualify for the FCCP program and benefit from RAAA’s marketing programs, the bull supplier must transfer the bull into the new owner’s name, not just send the registration paper in the mail. “I tell all my customers to make sure their bulls get transferred into their name so we can get some information,” said Davis. “We have to get all the information we can to the calf buyer so he can make a decision. And genetic information is going to be the big thing now,” he assured. Document, Document Marketing feeder cattle has definitely changed over the years and, aside from genetic information, Davis advises his ranchers to include information on mineral and vaccination practices.

I put that into the catalog because I know the buyers want to see that.” “It just blows my mind on what a good mineral programs can do for the condition of the cow and how they breed back. Everything is so much better, so, we’ve always tried to stress that.” “A good vaccination program is huge,” said Davis. He estimated that 15 years ago, only half of the cattle in Superior catalogs were on vaccination programs, and now 95 percent of them are getting shots.“Our premiums on Superior Vac 45 are $8.50 per hundredweight (cwt) for weaned and vaccinated calves. That’s $50 per head on a 6-weight.”
Davis knows that including genetic, management and health information in the catalog gives buyers more information and adds value to a set of calves. “Vac 34 premiums are around $3.50 per cwt,” he said, “which equates to about $20 a head for gathering, vaccinating, sending them back out on the cows, and then shipping 2 to 3 weeks later.” “Vaccination is important because we want them healthy when they ship,” Davis stressed. Buyers who experience health problems with sets of calves have long memories, and often aren’t
willing to purchase from the same seller again. Another important practice Davis strongly recommends is the certification and documentation of Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) practices. Most of his ranchers are already doing this. “When I sit down, I always ask the ranchers if they’re updated on their BQA certificate.”

Davis Knows Value of Putting the ‘Red’ in ‘Red Angus’ He added, “You always have to be thinking of the consumer – they call the shots.” Last, but certainly not least, Davis encourages all of his customers to take the time to source and age verify their calves.
Davis believes that age and sourcing is going to come back and be stronger for several reasons: It pays a premium, it’s a form of identification and cattle are set apart from those of other sellers.
He explained that a lot of producers ceased source and age verifying calves when Japan raised the age limit requirement for U.S. beef, but in 2014, Superior Verified Source & Age premiums still averaged $4.36 per cwt for steers.
“If you have a Red Angus FCCP tag in their ear, the buyer is probably going to sell them on one of the Red Angus grids. It gives the buyer a big premium. If they don’t have that tag, they can’t sell on the grid and therefore lose the premiums. So they’ll pay more money for the Red Angus calves that have the tag in their ear.”
“This year our premium on age and sourcing through Superior is $3.50 per cwt – $20 per head on a 6-weight steer, and the Red Angus tag only costs $1 per head,” said Davis. “That yellow Red Angus tag says, ‘These are my cattle, I’m proud of them, and we’re identifying them.’ That’s how we get branded beef programs.”
Furthermore, buyers can watch how calves perform and, because of that yellow tag, can source them back to their ranch of origin if they want to buy again. A tag, together with good documentation of value-added practices, helps promote the quality of the cattle and can help sell a program in today’s market that rewards for documented

It’s customers like those of Jim Davis’ who are using Red Angus genetics and the FCCP tags in their feeder calves, while also turning out top-quality females, that keep giving buyers and producers who desire herd-building genetics reasons why to choose and place “Red” before the word “Angus.” ■

Summit Inspires Insight into Consumer Selections by Harold Bertz, Director of Business Development
With the changing dynamics of our world, there has never been a more critical time for ranchers to increase their connection to the consumer. Families are demanding higher quality products with transparency in how their food is raised and handled along the journey to their dinner tables. While producers are willing to share their agriculture story, their operations are also businesses that need to be sustainable and profitable in order to put food on their own families’ tables. The Red Angus Summit, held July 19 – 21, in Kansas City, Mo., delivered the perfect venue for producers to increase their knowledge and connection with consumers. Red Angus breeders, commercial cattlemen, beef industry leaders and consumer experts from 15 states shared their expertise. Consumer Awareness The Red Angus Summit kicked off with a keen insight into consumer preference and influencers with J.J. Jones from the Center for Food Integrity (CFI). Jones, a senior project manager, described CFI’s commitment to build consumer trust and confidence in today’s food system by facilitating dialogue between consumers and food producers. His historical perspective illustrated the three main generational consumer groups’ trust, thoughts and beliefs about our food system. Jones said, “As our world has become more focused on multiple choices, diversity in opinion and more personalized view points, the food industry has moved in exactly the opposite direction. We’ve consolidated, integrated and industrialized in an effort to meet
66 American Red Angus Magazine ■ September 2015
consumer demands, maximize efficiencies and keep our businesses running. From the outside looking in, consumers can’t distinguish the differences between the food system and that portrayed in Food, Inc.” He also explained communication has changed during this same time, moving consumers to a more “tribal” system utilizing websites, blogs and social media. CFI research indicates shared values are three to five times more important in building trust than demonstrating competence with consumers. Jones summarized his presentation by challenging ranchers to put the research to work in five ways: 1. Believability is a key driver in creating information that is trusted. 2. Identify the groups you would like to engage. 3. Meet them where they are. 4. Develop a values-based engagement strategy that starts with listening and embracing skepticism. 5. Commit to engaging over time. Sunday evening was spent at Windy Winery and KK Red Angus. This Missouri Century farm has been in the Keesaman family for over 100 years, but they recently diversified with a unique multi-generational transfer plan that includes cattle, a winery, microbrewery and direct-market meat business.
Summit Inspires Insight into Consumer Selections The Product Summit participants toured The Local Pig, a whole-animal meat shop. Owner Alex Pope described how locally sourced meat is in great demand in his East Kansas City Bottoms shop.
“Our consumers appreciate making the connection between the product they buy here and the local farmer that produced it,” said Pope. “They want to know it is a safe product for their family.” Sysco Distribution in Olathe, Kan., a modern food warehouse and distribution center, sells, markets and distributes food products to restaurants, healthcare and educational facilities, and lodging establishments. The Sysco Warehouse contains 24,000 bays filled with 240,000 different products.
Managing the Risk Mark Kinoff, president of Ceres Hedge, Inc., spoke about the increased need for cattle producers to explore risk management. “Today’s cattle market is making big moves like we have never seen before. These movements create an environment for big profits but also devastating losses for producers who aren’t protected.” Using examples of current market moves, Kinoff explained the science and process of utilizing hedging as a risk-management tool. marketing. Butler explained grid mechanics and basics in relation to the benefits and drawbacks of retained ownership and marketing on qualitybased grids. “You must know your cattle before entering into this type of marketing,” he said. “If you have been investing in genetics that push your cattle for carcass merit, this may be a marketing option to consider.”
John Landry, Sysco chef, commented, "We pack 80,000 pallets of food nightly to distribute across our business area. Our goal is to make zero mistakes – and we meet our goals." Though parts of the process are automated, every pallet is hand pulled to meet individual order requirements. When discussing Sysco’s stand on customer service, Landry remarked, “We cherish every customer, big or small, and we want them to think of us first every time they need to order food.”
Ryan Ruppert, U.S. Sales Director for GeneSeek, discussed the advancing science of DNA. His brief explanation of the advancement of DNA led in to the Red Angus Herd Navigator DNA test. Ruppert explained the value of testing Red Angus-influenced commercial heifers to a producer’s bottom line. Ruppert often hears, “I buy good bulls. Why do I need to worry about this?” His reply – “If you know the genetic merit of your replacements, you can use these heifer profiles for corrective or complementary matings with highquality Red Angus sires.” Grid Marketing John Butler, CEO of the Beef Marketing Group, and Frank Wedel, Wedel Red Angus, led the conversation about grid

Wedel shared actual packer close-out sheets, explained the data he receives and how he utilizes it in genetic selection. REDSPro RAAA staff Larry Keenan, Kenda Ponder and Halla Pfeiff demonstrated the advanced capabilities of the REDSPro database. Participants were able to see data upload processes, search capabilities and other exciting options. A question-and-answer session furnished participants with immediate feedback on how REDSPro will apply to their operations. Selection Indices The panel discussion on Red Angus’ GridMaster and HerdBuilder indices started with Director of Breed Improvement Larry Keenan explaining the process of building an index and how Red Angus indices are built and quantified.

Summit Inspires Insight into Consumer Selections Panel members Donnell Brown, R. A. Brown Ranch; Kirk Sours, Tailgate Ranch; Craig Bieber, Bieber Red Angus; and Dr. Bob Weaber, Kansas State University, provided insight and answered questions on how indices were used in their operations. An active and informative dialogue between Summit participants and the expert panel provided members with more information on the validity and use of GridMaster and HerdBuilder. High-Quality Demand The second panel explored the different demands for high-quality beef from three diverse perspectives. Dale Moore owner of Cattlemen’s Choice Feedyard, discussed his need for healthy, high-quality animals. “Red Angus cattle fit our yard’s needs nicely and qualify for unique marketing options through the Red Angus custom grids,” he said.
Angelo Fili, executive vice president of Greater Omaha Packing, commented, “We determine which markets different quality grades go into after we process them. We like Red Angus because they nearly always enter our premium product line.” Lorin Fahrmeier owns Fahrmeier’s U-Pick and Produce, where they direct market vegetables and beef to their customers. Also a chef, she stated, “Our customers want healthy, quality beef and produce with a story. That’s what we provide them with.” Back to the Consumers Charlie Hopper, Missouri Department of Agriculture marketing specialist, challenged producers to listen to their customers. “Consumers want choice and are

willing to pay for the right to choose the foods they want.” He shared data collected in focus groups throughout Missouri that isolated demand trends and consumer preferences. “Look for questions – not answers – when producing and marketing your product. “Is it right for my farm, my family, my community, my consumer? Is it right for me?” The beef industry has seen an accelerated level of change in recent years and continues to advance both technologically and financially. The Red Angus Summit provided a unique look into the future from industry experts which will enable producers to meet the challenges and opportunities these changes will bring to their operations. ■

How to Continue the Ranching Legacy by Michael Flerchinger, Nichols Accounting Group, P.C.
Many of the readers have heard this statistic or similar figures: According to the 2012 USDA Census of Agriculture, the average age of principal farm and ranch operators was 58.3 years old, up 1.2 years since 2007.
Further, this continues a steady trend of increases over the past 30 years. This should be an alarming statistic as it means that over the next 10 to 15 years a large amount of ranchers will retire, or at a minimum, have a significantly reduced role in the family ranch. The question then arises, what happens next to continue your family’s ranching legacy? Or if that option is not available, how can you continue to keep your ranch operational as opposed to it being sold for non-farming and ranching purposes?
Kernen’s Cattle
The ability of your ranch to stand the test of time is dependent upon your ability to pass it to others who have the drive, skills, abilities and desire to continue the tradition of family-sized ranching. This may mean continuing your operation within the family, however, it can also come in the form of helping a new rancher get started.
Ideally, you probably want to pass your legacy to your family members, but this can present certain challenges that can make the transition to a younger generation tricky. There has to be a maturity level that the next generation has reached so that you can feel comfortable that they are not taking for granted the success that you and previous generations have built up. This is where you are responsible for instilling the proper attitudes into your children so that they realize the importance of the role they will be assuming. You should take the approach that you

are training the next CEO of your business. This early mentoring process may include: • Involving them in major decisions early. This allows you to judge how well they can analyze and develop solutions to problems without running the risk of them making a costly mistake. • Get them involved in meetings with professional advisors so they have input into the future direction of the ranch. • They should also be involved in the numbers side of the ranch. If they have never had this opportunity, it may be an eye-opener to them just how capital intensive ranching is. It may also allow them to make suggestions to become more financially efficient by having a fresh set of eyes on the accounting records. It may be that you do not have a next generation to pass the ranch to, whether it’s because you simply don’t
have another generation or they simply have no interest. You have options if this is the case. • Sale. Many people will opt to sell the operation off and retire. • Transition. One option some people may consider is transitioning the operation to a younger operator, regardless of relations, who has the drive, skills, abilities and desire to be a rancher. The capital intensiveness of ranching almost makes it cost prohibitive for a younger operator to get started. This partly explains the fact that the average age of a farmer and rancher is now 58 years old. Throughout their lives, most ranchers have likely had a lot of help from friends, neighbors and fellow ranchers to get them to where they are. If you are of the mentality of “paying it forward” as an option, the following are a few ideas to consider, although this list is not comprehensive and may include other strategies: • Employ them for a period of years

and offer a compensation package that helps them build capital towards purchasing part or all of your operation. • Offer reduced rates on pasture rents or feed if they have already started building their own herd. • Assist with financing in a situation where other lenders are not willing to help. This also gets you a stream of cash flow for retirement. • Lease equipment to them on a term that allows them to purchase it at a later date at a bargain purchase price. This could also be combined with a compensation package.
There is a financial cost involved in transitioning so you must ensure that you are financially stable to afford to do so without putting your own livelihood in detriment. Further, by depending on your operation’s entity structure, there will be varying issues that need to be considered from a tax, financial and legal aspect. Professional advice should be sought out.
It is a common misconception that the younger generation is just looking for a free ride. However, you’ll be amazed at how much ambition there is for them to be innovative and successful if they are offered a leg-up along the way. In order for the agricultural industry to survive outside of the large corporate arena there must be a willingness by the elder generation to preserve the way of life so many have grown up with. Transitioning a ranch to the next generation is not a one- or two-year event – it is a long-term process. If you are one of the statistics mentioned earlier, then the formal process should be starting now. ■ Michael Flerchinger is a CPA with The Nichols Accounting Group located in Oregon and Idaho. In Memory Katherine "Katie" Elizabeth Durkin Katherine "Katie" Elizabeth Durkin, age 9, of Wales, N.Y., was born on Feb. 23, 2006, to Jeff and Ellen Durkin (daughter of Spike and Jo Forbes, and granddaughter of the late Sal Forbes). Katie passed away in a traffic accident on July 7, 2015.
Katie was a funny, creative, quirky, bright, always-happy, loving kid who was beloved by all who came to know her. Katie loved her many friends, her family, soccer, softball, skiing, riding her four wheeler, and playing with her American Girl dolls. She was always helpful, generous and kind, and was the light and love of her family members’ lives. Katie made an indelible mark on the world and the lives of everyone around her. Katie is remembered by all who knew her – dad Jeff, mom Ellen, sisters Sarah and Julia, Gramma Chere, Papa Spike, Grammy Jo and Gramma Beth, Mrs. Gail and all her aunts and uncles. There has been a fund established to receive donations toward the “Butterfly Athletic Park” to be constructed at the
Wales Primary School where Katie attended for four years.
Inspired by a description of Katie by her classmates as “Kind and Thoughtful in Everything,” the “KATIE” acronym was born. The hand-drawn butterfly, artwork created by Katie just months ago, signifies a life that undergoes a swift and magical transformation, becoming a subject of beauty and inspiration. The Durkin family stated, “We can think of no greater way to honor Katie than to channel our energies into celebrating the qualities that made her so special. It is humbling to know that there are countless people in our community already helping to create and sustain this beautiful legacy.”
