Calving book comments seal cow’s fate Well, its calving season. Whether it’s just winding down, or ready to start up, a large number of calves are hitting the ground right about now.
These are long hours filled with both pure joy along with over-whelming disappointment. This is a time of year when we spend a lot of time with our cows. In this season of long hours and hard work, a lot of decisions are made for the futures of our operations. This is the real-life cull / keep class. I don't know about your place, but the culling decision can be overturned if it was just a shouted comment in the heat of the moment. For instance, "If she doesn't find the gate this time, she's going to town!"
On the other hand, if the shouted comment becomes an ugly scrawled comment in the calving book, the fate is sealed. With young children often helping, I try to keep our comments to short, descriptive terms like, "Sell – crazy – didn't claim." However, I have, on occasion, been privy to the calving books of others. (Which felt odd, somehow – kind of like reading someone else's diary.) The short, descriptive terms were very different (and unprintable), yet I was still able to get the point that it was a definite culling decision.
I always find that cattle amaze me – they are often like humans. Some take a stressful event and perform above expectations, while others take a stressful event and over-react, snow-

balling events to a ridiculous level. Take, for example, the story of two cows, linked by fate – 813 and 967.
It all started when 813 decided to become super-efficient and skip the calving process for herself and claim another cow's calf, instead. The other cow and actual mother of the calf, 967, dutifully stayed with her calf, as 813 domineered. Eventually, nature forced 813 to lie down and give birth to her own calf. She then jumped up without a backward glance at the wet little being snuffing and shaking his head behind her, to catch up with 967 and her calf as they tried to make a quick get-away.
Enter the human intervention. Our season is off the norm, so this is late May, Sunday afternoon (of course!). The helpful humans (names have been changed to protect Scott and I) were planning to just drive through the pasture, write down numbers of cows that had calved and catch a few hours rest from the hectic spring season. It was hoped that the actual birth of 813's calf would catch her attention and break the bond with the stolen calf. No such luck. Helpful humans were sure that 813 would certainly see her mistake when the wet calf she walked away from was presented to her again (wishful Sunday thinking). When the proud mother saw her own calf, she sniffed deeply, backed up a few steps, then rushed forward with her head down to send the new baby sailing onto his side. (Muttered ugly comment No. 1 from helpful humans.) It was decided that the best course of

action, with daylight starting to fade, would be to load both calves in the pickup and lead the cows to a corral to separate the pairs and let the new calf nurse with the help of a head catch. New, undesired, mostly-dry-by-now baby was tied in the front of the pickup box. 967's much-sought-after calf was grabbed. Human No. 1 was headed to the tailgate when 813 sniffed deeply, backed up a few steps, then rushed forward, emitting a deep, threatening bawl. Human No. 1 emitted a threatening bawl in return, which was also ugly comment No. 2 from the helpful humans. 813 then became offended, stuck her head in the air and took off. Thus ensued a trying game of chasing, luring, coaxing, cussing and avoiding the head-lowered rush
from 813. (Ugly comments No. 3 through No. 117 were muttered, shouted and hand-signaled during this time.) All of this took place over and through a creek bed and old prairie dog town. Human No. 1 had suffered a twisted ankle and was hobbling after 813 to prevent her reentry to the creek bed, while keeping a grip on the much-sought-after calf. Human No. 2 was rushing in the pickup to re-open the gate that had to be shut when a curious group of heavies had strolled by.
Human No. 2 had the gate open and turned to see Human No. 1 holding the calf and back-pedaling. It was a race between Human No. 2 and 813 to see who would reach Human No. 1 first. It was a tie, culminating with a heroic jump by Human No. 1 into the pickup, calf and all, with a sprained ankle. Amid the chaos of a revving pickup, snot-blowing cow,

and blunt blows of man and calf tumbling over the side, the following was clearly heard, "WRITE HER DOWN IN THE CALVING BOOK – SHE'S GOING TO TOWN!" The story didn't end there, but 813's future as a brood cow certainly did with the calving book comment, "Sell – crazy – didn't claim." 967's future was secured as she calmly did her best to nurture her calf and bring him safely through the melee.
The happy part of the story (besides the fact that Human No. 1 didn't get run over by either the cow or the pickup) is that this story stands out as the oddity, not the norm. The Red Angus mother cow is the best to be found. She is an icon of fertility and mothering ability. And if things don't work out, she makes a darn fine hamburger. Just ask our calving book and 967. ■

RAFI funds research for three studies The Red Angus Foundation, Inc. (RAFI) and the Red Angus Association of America Boards of Directors are deeply committed to supporting our core policies. Core policy No. 9 states, “The RAAA actively seeks out and implements new technologies that are based on sound, scientific principles.”
During the last several months, both boards have cooperated in taking positive steps to remain active toward this goal. Carefully, they have selected several research projects to fund. Past research has aided our members and stakeholders in making management decisions that increase profitability, improve genetic evaluation, address short- and long-term environment effects and sustain or enhance production. Sciencebased research has also been used to be proactive – to avoid problems and prepare for future issues. The present venture began with a call for proposals. Research entities responded by submitting grant proposals that targeted important issues facing us. Next the RAFI board carefully considered each submission and prioritized it with member and stakeholder interests in mind. These discussions were extremely interesting and sound decisions were made. The RAAA Board went through a similar process to cooperate with RAFI as well as seeking other partnerships to move projects forward. The projects selected for funding will address and advance our knowledge of Red Angus cattle and genetics. One project will measure the differences coat color has on animal responses to summer temperatures and humidity levels. Decades ago the first trials on coat color showed that red color allowed the ani-

mal’s surface area to be nearly 10 degrees cooler than their black counterparts. This trial will begin the process of taking the next step of showing the production and metabolic advantages of this phenomenon. Heat stress is often thought of as a problem in the southeast United States. In reality, beef production across the entire country has suffered from heat stress. It is estimated that heat stress has annually caused lost feedlot performance, mortality, cowherd performance and reproductive rates totaling millions of dollars every year. Another funded project will investigate a new procedure to increase the amount of usable information from genomic testing. If successful, it will remove some barriers that have plagued genomic testing. Breaking this barrier could have profound effects on improving the return of investment breeders make in DNA evaluation.
Finally, a third funded project will study the RAAA phenotypic and genotypic databases for improvements in predicting Stayability and Heifer Pregnancy. We all realize the importance these two traits have on today’s commercial cowherd. One problem has been accumulating data that increase the accuracy of these traits in a timely manner. This project targets those circumstances head on.
All in all, the RAFI Board of Directors needs to be commended on providing the opportunity to better the Red Angus breed. Several years ago they set goals of funding research. Today those goals are becoming reality. The RAAA Board of Directors has also responded to the call. Together both boards are helping build a stronger and wiser foundation for the breed. ■

Marketing Update

Red – The New Green “Green” has become the buzzword describing anything environmentally friendly in the popular vernacular. As cattle producers, we have long known the value of creating positive, “green,” environmental impacts and the conservation of our resources. Red Angus producers have pastures full of what just might be the most biofriendly, “green,” ecosystem around – the Red Angus female! She is efficient, heat tolerant, fertile, and transmits high-quality carcass traits to her offspring. She mows the grass and fertilizes in one pass, all while producing abundant milk! “Red” really has become the new “green.”
Another type of “green” the Red Angus female is becoming known for is value. Red Angus females have shown robust demand and commanded top prices at sales around the country. Both purebred and commercial Red Angus females have become recognized as top choices for rebuilding America’s cowherd. Producers have shown their confidence in the Red Angus and Red Angus-influenced female as the most profitable choice in replacement cattle. Bull sales have been stronger than ever, indicating commer-
cial cattlemen’s desire to create topquality replacement females to return to their cowherds or deliver to their customers.
With all of this interest in high-quality Red Angus and Red Angus-influenced females, let’s not forget the value of identifying them through the Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program (FCCP) and Pro-Cow programs. Heifers enrolled in FCCP are not only source verified to the ranch of origin and group aged, but also guarantee the genetic verification of being 50 percent or greater Red Angus. A step further when marketing females, consider the Pro-Cow tag to identify replacement-quality heifers. Only females enrolled in the FCCP program are eligible for the Pro-Cow tag, ensuring high-percentage Red Angus genetics. The FCCP tag can be purchased for 99-cents or $3 for a panel tag and EID button. The Pro-Cow tag is available as a 99-cent dangle tag with the Pro-Cow logo, or the logo can be imprinted on producers’ FCCP tags when they originally enroll a calf crop. Another exciting avenue to build value in replacement females is the Herd Navigator test. Powered by the Red Angus database and a GeneSeek reduced-panel DNA test, the Herd
Navigator provides vital genetic information on tested Red Angus-influenced commercial females. Tested females receive genetic information in the form of individual percentile rankings as compared to the herd, and individual percentile rankings as compared to all other Red Angus genotyped animals. Traits included in the Herd Navigator are Red Angus’ HerdBuilder and GridMaster indices, all EPD traits and parent verification, given that the potential sires have been tested with the RA50K test. Due to the DNA test being breed specific, the Herd Navigator works best on females that are at least 75 percent Red Angus. The culmination of information delivered through the Herd Navigator provides commercial producers with an unmatched tool for guiding their selection decisions. It also creates added value for the genetic merit of commercial Red Angus females.

Producers ordering the Herd Navigator tests must own at least one registered Red Angus bull and the bull(s) must be transferred to the ordering producer. Heller Combines Passion for Youth and Agriculture by Chessie Garrett, RAAA Electronic Communications
The Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) is pleased to announce the hire of Kimberly Anderson Heller, Ph.D., of Clarion, Iowa, as the new Junior Programs Coordinator. “Kim brings to the Association an immense knowledge of youth leadership development and the beef industry,� said Twig Marston, Association CEO. “We are thrilled to welcome Kim to the team and watch as she leads our junior programs to a new era within the RAAA.� Heller’s primary responsibilities will
be to develop and enhance youth leadership and education within the RAAA. She will coordinate all junior events, contests and programs within the Association. Heller has been actively involved in youth development for more than 25 years. She has worked hands on with students within 4-H and FFA at the national level to help develop both leadership and professional skills.
“I have always been impressed with the quality of the juniors and their dedication to the philosophy of the breed,� said Heller. “I look forward to serving as the junior programs coordinator and for the opportunities ahead as we continue to build leaders for the red generation.�
Heller received her bachelor’s degree in agricultural education from Iowa State University in 1994. She then went on to earn her master’s degree from the University of Georgia in agricultural and extension education, and later, her doctorate at the University of Georgia in adult education. “I have a strong desire to engage young people in the agricultural industry and to influence their career choices,â€? said Heller. “I look forward to providing leadership and direction to the Junior Red Angus program.â€? Scholarships This year there are three opportunities for members to receive financial support to participate. The commercial producer nomination deadline has passed, but the Heather Presser Memorial Scholarship and the Merit Award Program applications are both due May 1. The Heather Presser Memorial Scholarship Application will be used by a committee to select one individual to receive $500. Through the Merit Award Program application, the top three high-point individuals will be awarded Round-Up Scholarships in the amounts of $750, $500 and $400 to reduce travel and / or Round-Up registration expenses. Continuing a Heritage – The Mark and Jaime Burchfield Family by Patti Wilson for American Red Angus Magazine
When it comes to facing monumental changes, the Mark and Jaime Burchfield family is fearless. The Colorado natives were happy on their diversified farming operation near Strasburg, east of Denver. Busy raising two sons, Jaime was also employed first as a paraprofessional, then secretary at the local elementary school.

The whole family enjoyed their cowherd. Mark reflects that they even had a view of the mountains, and it was a pretty good life. Inevitably, urban encroachment came creeping in. First, 40-acre ranchettes cropped up. Later, housing subdivisions surrounded the farm. With two sons who were interested in agriculture, Mark knew that if they had any chance to be included in the family business, the business had to expand. But expansion was impossible. Burchfield had no complaints about the farm itself, saying they had adequate rainfall and good grass. For the family’s sake, however, they began a search for a different place. Burchfield is a reasonable guy with an abundance of common sense. He knew this would be a big move, and every family member needed to have input on relocation. By then, his sons were grown and their thoughts valued. Mark said that if even one family member said, “No” to a prospective parcel, the place was ruled out. The family looked at 31 ranches in four states, and their circle kept getting wider.
Jaime and Mark Burchfield are mindful of the deep heritage on their Cody ranch. A top priority is to create financial sustainability and maintain sound infrastructure. Jaime is holding grandson Nathan Burchfield, who is already part of the ranch family.

Continuing a Heritage – The Mark and Jaime Burchfield Family When the place at Cody, Neb., came up for sale, it was a perfect fit. Four miles north of the tiny village on a onelane blacktop road, the ranch encompasses enough grazing for 540 cows and 70 replacement heifers, including a winter feed base. It extends north 1 mile into South Dakota and, better yet, is in one contiguous piece. The family jumped on the opportunity and relocated in 2006. Jaime reflected that it took a month to move the machinery, shop equipment, household and cattle. Their Colorado farm sold quickly and was soon engulfed by another subdivision.
Rich History The Burchfields appreciate the heritage of their new home – they were quick to point out the historical side of the ranch. It has been owned by only three entities since the Kincaid Act was established in 1904, increasing the legal homestead area in the Sandhills to a full section.
Unfortunately, a section of land couldn’t feed a family, and many settlers sold their claims as soon as they could legally leave. Charlie Metz, founder of Metz Brewery in Omaha, Neb., began putting parcels of land together east of Cody Lake in 1906. Discouraged settlers in the area were quick to give up on their claims and the wealthy Metz was there to relieve the tired pioneers of their failed ranches. Metz and his sons, most notably Charlie, were avid bird hunters. Their ranch was run as a profitable business and

Charlie Metz, in particular, made a habit of bringing his friends out to Cody by train each fall to hunt. He built a lodge, which still stands today, to house his guests. He named his social entourage the “Merganzer Club.”
The club employed its own cook, plenty of hunting dogs and supposedly lots of beer, some of which was brewed on the ranch during prohibition. The ranch stayed in the Metz family long after Charlie’s death in 1948. There is interest by the town of Cody to move the historic lodge into town and establish a museum. An interesting piece of Nebraska history, the building sits idly across the drive from the Burchfield’s home.
Red Angus Cattle Are a Fit Burchfield’s began using Red Angus bulls long before their move. After experimenting with a few of the Continental breeds, they came to the conclusion that their cows needed to be more efficient. They liked the looks of Red Angus.
The hunting lodge at Burchfield’s headquarters is being considered as a historical museum by the village of Cody. It housed many groups of hunters who arrived there by railroad from Omaha. The Metz family named their group “The Merganzer Club” and hosted extended hunting retreats in the 1908-1950 time frame. 28 American Red Angus Magazine ■ April 2015
Sure of his choice, Mark sold all his bulls one fall and went to Jim Leachman’s sale. They purchased 12 sons of Cherokee Canyon on the “bull roll” and completely changed their breeding program in one year. Mark credits a Colorado neighbor and friend, John Jay Hanks, for encouragement, reminding Mark not to be shy when you’re sure you’re right. The Red Angus advantage of calving ease and maternal strength made his decision easy.
Continuing a Heritage – The Mark and Jaime Burchfield Family Burchfields have stuck strictly with Red Angus bulls ever since, and completely changed the genetics of their cowherd. The busy rancher depends on the Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) marketing team to help him with additional bull procurement and says they are good, dependable people. Burchfields’ younger son, Dustin, did an internship with RAAA while in college, and there is a deep trust in the organization. The family has been able to match Red Angus genetics with utilization of sand grass; hardy bulls and females are needed to navigate long distances. Although water is never a problem north of Cody, cattle must be sound to navigate steep slopes and tough enough to deal with sand, which can be abrasive to teeth and eyes. Burchfields conduct diligent research and follow stringent criteria when selecting their bull battery to make sure the genetics are appropriate for their environment.
Marketing Strategy Calves are born February through April, and are preconditioned four to six weeks before they’re sold. All calves are marketed as Natural and are eligible for the Meyer Natural Angus program. They’re also eligible for retail meat sales at Whole Foods supermarkets. Burchfields have marketed on Superior Livestock Auction’s video sales for many years and their cattle – both steers and heifers – are much sought after. Superior was Burchfield’s choice of marketing long before he left Colorado and he continues this marketing plan, dealing with the same people as he did before the move.
Danny Burchfield is the next generation raising Red Angus cattle at Cody. Longrange planning will ensure that his family will continue the heritage started in the early 1900s.
The steer calves generally go to the same Iowa cattle feeders each fall, proving their genetic program is consistent and successful. The Iowans are most pleased with the quality grade and cost of gain they get with the Burchfield cattle. Base weight on steers is generally about 585 lbs. for October delivery. Heifer calves go back to the country to be bred, and have historically stayed in Nebraska. The 2014 heifer calf crop topped Superior’s auction when they sold in October. Mark says he will often see their heifers come back through the Superior video system each year, selling as bred stock.
Calves are weaned straight into the truck when they are loaded out, long-haired and bright. They are tagged with the Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program (FCCP) tags. Burchfield’s affiliation with Superior Livestock Auction is part of an alliance the video auction company has made with RAAA. Cattle that are part of the FCCP and Allied Access Programs are highlighted both in Superior’s print catalogs and on the screen while being sold.
Burchfield says the FCCP program is one of the most effective and simple marketing strategies he’s seen. He calls the RAAA National Office each year to enroll in the FCCP and purchase the yellow ear tags. He tags the calves as they are born.
Mark Burchfield attributes the success of his herd’s marketability to the genetic merit of the bulls he purchases. 30 American Red Angus Magazine ■ April 2015
After calving, Burchfield fills out one simple form and submits it back to RAAA, verifying the date of birth on the first calf born and guaranteeing the calves are sourced right on the ranch. The RAAA takes it from there and helps market their steers through their free FeederFax program – keeping in touch with all interested calf buyers.
Continuing a Heritage – The Mark and Jaime Burchfield Family Sustainability – Today and Tomorrow The Burchfield ranch’s winter feed base provides for the cowherd during the winter months. The Burchfield family puts up 600 to 700 acres of sub-irrigated meadow, and a good year will yield 2,000 to 2,500 bales of prairie hay. Hay meadows in the Sandhills take on a life of their own when the water table rises to the surface when there is an abundance of rain. There are bogs that can make it impossible to run haying equipment, and in extreme cases, the tractor might disappear altogether. Burchfields take these haying challenges in stride and are always grateful for the abundant water supply and availability of feed. Mark and Jaime have a full family life with their older son Danny, wife Kay Dee and grandson Nathan also living on the ranch. Kay Dee is an elementary teacher in addition to ranch wife. Younger son Dustin, his wife Sariet and grandson Brodie, currently live in Colorado but have expressed interest in joining the ranch as well. “Sustainability” is becoming an over-used word, however, it takes on a new importance in such a remote and historic location.

Mark Burchfield wants the ranch to be financially and environmentally sustainable – to be able to expand the business for his family’s sake and the sake of future generations. Future plans include improving water lines and infrastructure.
Their Red Angus cowherd will continue to play an integral role in the sustainability of their operation. The hardiness and adaptability of the Red Angus female to their Sandhills environment is key to their success in raising soughtafter steers and heifers. Red Angus genetic merit – live calves, calves that go on to feed well and females that breed up – is their ranch’s foundation. “And the success of the marketability of our cattle is attributed to the genetics of the bulls we purchase,” said Mark. The combination of genetics, a consistent marketing plan and solid reputation weave together a fabric of sustainability that will continue to bring success to the Burchfield family. Mark concluded, “If you take care of the ranch, the ranch will take care of you.” No one can argue with common sense. ■

Nutrition Plays Vital Role in Getting Cows Bred by Trinity Lewis for American Red Angus Magazine
Sire fertility, herd health and opportunities to mate all contribute to reproductive performance in beef cowherds. Yet the vital role nutrition plays during breeding season is no secret to cattle producers. Focusing on cow nutrition may be the single most important element to a successful calving season. What kinds of feed or supplements are most important to add to your cowherd’s ration post-partum and pre-breeding? How should rations vary based on age group and how can a rancher be sure his cows are in the best condition they can be for breeding? Dr. Rick Funston, Reproductive Physiologist at the University of Nebraska’s West Central Research and Extension Center, simply stated, “Management and nutrition are factors that can be easily affected and yield significant results.” While evaluating the Body Condition Score (BCS) of your herd, it is important to also evaluate the condition of the forage the cows are consuming. According to Funston, “Inadequate daily energy intake is a primary cause of reduced cattle performance on forage diets. In many instances with warmseason perennial forages (and possibly with cool-season perennial forages at advanced stages of maturity), there is an inadequate supply of crude protein, which will limit energy intake.” He explained if forages contain less than approximately 7 percent crude protein, feeding a protein supplement generally improves the energy and protein status of cattle by improving forage intake and digestibility. Although protein is important in any diet it acts in an even more distinctive way for ruminant animals. Microorganisms (bacteria and protozoa) in cattle break down most dietary proteins and merge nitrogen and amino acids into their own

body tissue. The bacteria have a protein requirement that must be present to transform roughages to end products utilized by the cow. “Our feeding plans generally are high roughage and often harvested forage around calving. Forage alone will not meet energy requirements post calving, especially for the younger females. Depending on forage quality, protein may be sufficient, but have your feedstuffs analyzed for protein and energy and balance appropriately,” advised Funston. Although it would be easiest for all cattle to fit the same equations for feeding, it is inevitable that different age groups have different needs. In general younger females in a cowherd have a higher nutrient requirement. “We have taken the approach to develop heifers on a lower input system with feedstuffs they are going to receive as a cow, and keep more heifers than needed for replacements so we can accept a lower pregnancy rate and possibly be selecting for fertility later on in life.” Open females at any time are disappointing yet Funston insists if one is to get caught in that scenario, having it happen with a virgin heifer will have the least negative impact on your herd overall. “If you are ever going to have a beef female end up not pregnant after the breeding season, it better be one that has never been pregnant. The replacement heifer run as a stocker can be a profitable enterprise as a feeder animal if she does not become pregnant.”

Nutrition Plays Vital Role in Getting Cows Bred Funston promotes the idea of sorting your cowherd for best management. “I tend to group the herd as heifer calves, first and second calvers, then 4-year-olds-plus. I provide additional nutrition to the young first and second calvers that are still growing and, in the case of the first calver, lactating for the first time.” He said producers get in the habit of putting second-time calvers with older cows yet they still require a higher level of nutrition as they are still growing. A cow’s BCS has long prevailed as one of the best evaluations of her ability to breed. Funston said, “Body condition at calving is the single-most-important factor determining when beef heifers and cows will resume cycling after calving. Body condition score at calving also influences response to postpartum nutrient intake.” Experts recommend measuring your herd’s BCS four to six times each year. A regularly used schedule for collecting BCS is every 90 to 120 days; 30 days prior to breeding, 90 days post-breeding, weaning, 100 days prior to calving and calving. By compiling data regularly, producers can better position their herds for breeding success. Ideally, BCS should be collected by the same person each time for consistency while keeping in mind her age, breed and frame size. Funston describes an optimal situation for breeding. “I want a nutritional program where the heifer or cow will always be increasing gain going into breeding. I caution not to over feed to a rate of gain greater than when they are establishing pregnancy. Sometimes cattle are confined during calving or heifer development and fed diets promoting high rates of gain in excess of 2.5 pounds per day, then when they go to pasture they won’t continue that gain and may experience more embryonic loss.” He continued, “I would rather breed a thin cow gaining condition than a fat cow going the other way during the breeding season.”

A Look ‘Under the Hood’ of Selection Indices by Larry Keenan, RAAA Director of Breed Improvement
As expected, the recent release of Red Angus’ economic selection indices has led to many stakeholders wanting to take a look “under the hood” to better understand how the indices are calculated. This shouldn’t be too surprising, as Red Angus stakeholders have a long history of demanding unsurpassed reliability in the genetic tools that describe their cattle.
This mentality has led to the previous implementation of Total Herd Reporting (THR), a focus on Economically Relevant Traits (ERT), and the creation of a Technical Committee which is a non-political committee that oversees RAAA’s EPD and Index calculations. Incidentally, all three of these components directly impacted the development and delivery of Red Angus’ HerdBuilder and GridMaster indices.
The development of a selection index leads to the identification of traits that have a direct economic impact on producers’ profitability given the scenario in which the index is built to address.
The foresight and discipline exhibited by Red Angus stakeholders in the complete implementation of THR is often overlooked, but will continue to pay significant dividends throughout the life of the RAAA. Since 1995, THR has not only provided stakeholders with dependable growth and carcass EPDs; but as well, has provided RAAA with the ability to directly calculate trustworthy ERTs. RAAA’s unmatched database and resulting EPDs and ERTs resulting from 20 years of THR provided RAAA with the ideal tools to develop the HerdBuilder and GridMaster indices. Recall that the purpose of a selection index is to identify differences in profitability resulting from selection decisions. As such, RAAA is ideally positioned to deliver accurate selection indices, as the Red Angus database is unmatched in quality of data

used to calculate revenue traits (growth and carcass) and essential cowherd traits (Stay, HPG, CEM, CEM, etc.). While Red Angus’ database provides an essential component for development of selection indices, the most critical element of all Red Angus genetic selection tools is the oversight provided through the RAAA Technical Committee, which is populated by members with advanced statistical and genetic prediction knowledge.
A Look ‘Under the Hood’ of Selection Indices Prior to any EPD, ERT or selection index being published, the Technical Committee must approve it after a thorough evaluation. Red Angus’ Technical Committee had been working on the HerdBuilder and GridMaster indices for the past three years, and had rejected the first two attempts due to various concerns. After studying the last prototype for over one month, the Technical Committee voted unanimously to publish the HerdBuilder and GridMaster indices. The supervision provided through the Technical Committee should provide stakeholders with confidence in Red Angus’ HerdBuilder and GridMaster indices, as these new numbers have truly been evaluated and scrutinized by a body of Red Angus members.
The development of a selection index leads to the identification of traits that have a direct economic impact on producers’ profitability given the scenario in which the index is built to address. Additionally, the economic influence of each trait is determined. As expected, some traits have a large economic impact while others have a small economic impact. The list on page 44 contains the traits and their categorized impact (Super, High, Medium, Low) on the HerdBuilder and GridMaster indices. As stated above, one advantage RAAA has in the development of selection indices is the fact that for decades we have been calculating ERTs, thus reducing the need to predict the ERTs required by the index with indicator traits. The only ERT in-
cluded in the indices in which RAAA doesn’t routinely calculate is feed intake. However, feed intake is a trait that can be reliably predicted using an animal’s WW, ADG and carcass composition. Ideally, RAAA’s database of animals with individual feed intake will continue to grow and eventually allow for the direct calculation of feed intake using a combination of actual feed intake data and indicator traits. Now that the hood has been lifted on the HerdBuilder and GridMaster indices, Red Angus stakeholders have the opportunity to gain a greater understanding of the traits and their individual impact. Armed with this transparent information, producers can fully assess – and form their own judgment of – RAAA’s economic selection indices. ■

BIF to Meet June 9-12 in Biloxi
The 2015 Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) Annual Meeting and Research Symposium will be June 9-12 at the Beau Rivage Hotel and Conference Center in Biloxi, Miss. The theme for this year’s program is “Rebuilding a Cowherd.”
Co-hosted by the Mississippi State University Extension Service and the Mississippi Beef Cattle Improvement Association, the event will start at noon June 9 with registration, followed at 1 p.m. by a Young Producers’ Symposium. A welcome reception begins at 5 p.m. with the National Association of Animal Breeders Symposium at 7 p.m.
The meeting will allow the research community and industry to meet and discuss issues surrounding the genetic improvement of beef cattle and for attendees to learn about technologies and management practices that can aid in the profitability of their operations.
On June 10, the meeting will start at 8 a.m. with a welcome and general session. Presentations and technical breakout sessions will follow through June 11. Attendees are invited to participate in a spouses’ tour on June 10 and a producer tour on June 12.
Some of the topics to be covered include setting the stage for cowherd rebuilding, what sustainability means and why it matters, what sustainability data say about the beef industry, how current market incentives affect genetic selection, profitability: looking to an operation’s future, balancing novel and proven applications for female selection, cow lifetime productivity, and an adaptability panel discussion.

The meeting is approved for 14 CEUs for American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists (ARPAS) members in attendance. The Beef Improvement Federation was formed more than 45 years ago to standardize beef cattle performance programs and evaluation methodology, and to create greater awareness, acceptance and usage of these concepts for the genetic improvement of beef cattle. It represents more than 40 state and national beef cattle associations.
