Amazing females, outstanding people make our breed great Commercial cow-calf operations are the backbone of the beef industry. They are the engine that drives all other segments of the beef production chain, and the basis of the production cycle of the most nutrient-dense, readily available protein on the planet – BEEF. This issue of the American Red Angus Magazine is dedicated to the amazing Red Angus female. Please read and garner knowledge from the articles in this issue to improve your herd’s performance and ability to make advancement in beef production. The Amazing Red Angus Cow One of the largest variables of profit with any cow-calf operation is the conception rate and ability for the cow to remain productive in the herd for a longer life span. Red Angus was the first to introduce the Stayability EPD – a tool to predict the ability of a female to remain productive in the herd until at least 6 years of age.

Remember, using these EPD tools for selection will increase your bottom line. Red Angus-influenced commercial females work from the heat of the Deep South to the arid, desolate conditions of the West, across the Midwest and in the mountains of the Northwest. The Red Angus female is very adaptable, thus making our breed highly useful and profitable for commercial cattlemen across the entire country. This breed has many great cows working every day to produce food and fiber for the world. Red Angus is a great breed of cattle that works for many different philosophies, climate conditions and variables. Most Red Angus breeders already know our breed’s attributes and benefit from the

cattle excelling in much varied conditions with different management styles and viewpoints. Thank You As I sit here and write my last column as president of the Red Angus Association of America (RAAA), it gives me a chance to reflect on many things.

I see now how Red Angus has became my extended family, and how I learned what really works in life from the cattle that I grew up with. My time as president holds many wonderful and great memories that I will cherish for the rest of my days. I will also recall the challenges that faced the leadership of RAAA during my time on the Board and as president.

The people of the Red Angus breed are our greatest asset. The leadership shown by past Boards and presidents has taken us extremely far in 60 years. Since 1954 we have grown to the fourth-largest registry of beef cattle in this country. That is a great accomplishment and testament to the people of RAAA. The future is bright for Red Angus, and the progressive, outstanding leadership that has made us strong and creative will continue to navigate this great breed forward.

I wish to thank each member of Board of Directors with whom I served. I also truly appreciate the staff that has been so wonderful to work with. Finally, I thank the membership for allowing me the opportunity of a lifetime – the opportunity for a cowman from Alabama to serve as president of RAAA. ■

Calling, commitment and cost This summer I had the pleasure of attending my niece’s wedding. The presiding clergy gave a message filled with meaning and insight unlike any I had ever heard. His message focused on three themes: calling, commitment and cost. He described to the happy couple how these themes relate to having a successful marriage. Upon hearing his message, I began thinking about how the three themes he applied to marriage can also bring success in the beef industry.

Calling I truly believe everyone associated with the beef industry has a calling. Regardless if you are in beef production or industry service, you possess an inner calling. This gut feeling gives you a sensation that this is your destiny and that you are fulfilling your fate. Artists have captured this calling and dedication in cattlemen, women and families through sculptures, paintings and photographs. Societies have decorated and honored industry leaders. Educational institutions have been built to teach and research the biosciences, economics and husbandry of the bovine. However, anyone who has met a true cowman has had a chance to learn the meaning of a handshake, the respect deserved by Mother Nature, and the genuine quality of a smile and a laugh. Commitment The commitment to the beef profession can be witnessed daily. Just watch cattlemen go about their business. Quietly, with dedication and diligence, they check their herds, make feed, provide protection from the elements, and share their time and talents with others. I have seen them be the first to respond when peril strikes, the last to leave in times of need, and to patiently assist a

first-calf heifer perform the miracle of birth.

Cost That brings us to cost. One's thoughts could first be pulled to the money it takes to run a business in the beef industry: acquiring needed resources such as land, equipment, inventory and facilities, as well as risk management in buying and selling stock. However, the cost of being in this industry is more than the money it takes to acquire resources. Time is also a currency in this industry. Cattlemen and women dedicate their time to learn the proper way to utilize and sustain ranch resources so bovine genetics, management and handling skills can be honed. Because of these “costs” in this industry, sacrifices also fit into this category. Being late or missing a family event, suffering discomfort and bone-chilling cold while tending to the animals in a blizzard, and feeling the pain of the sick or the lame all attribute to the cost and sacrifices these men and women make on a daily basis. It is through these experiences cattle people recognize the important parts of life.

Wrapping up, it’s important to remember this issue of the ARA Magazine is dedicated to the commercial cow. You will read articles and ads throughout the magazine highlighting those factors that make a great cowherd. Genetics will be described by EPDs, ERTs, MBVs and convenience traits. Management tips will provide insight in the areas of optimizing reproduction, calf performance and health. Behind all these decisions stand the women and men that makeup the beef industry, each unique in their personalities and each possessing the admirable traits of calling, commitment and cost. ■

Marketing Update by Chelsea Poe, Marketing Programs Coordinator

2013-2014 Grid Master winners announced

Red Angus Feeder Calf Special Sales

The Red Angus Grid Master program had another great year. Red Angus cattle and those who feed them have proven capable of meeting the rigorous challenge of being labeled a “Grid Master” by meeting or exceeding the increased specifications from four years ago.

The Red Angus Grid Master program recognizes the ranches that breed these great cattle, the feeders, as well as the packers who seek to locate those cattle for premium branded beef programs.

Over 850 head of Red Angus cattle enrolled in the Feeder Calf Certification Program (FCCP) achieved the Grid Master label this year. Ranches and feed yards new to the program, combined with seasoned veterans that have been recognized since the program’s inception in 2003, delivered 14 winning lots this year.

The producers and feeders of these remarkable cattle were recognized at the 2014 Red Angus National Convention on Sept. 12 in Savannah, Ga.

Those who would like to be considered for Grid Master recognition in the future may send carcass data to the RAAA marketing staff.

Member Services Update Next Generation of Genomic Merit Testing is here! The Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) is excited to announce the availability of a nextgeneration DNA test – GeneSeek Genomic Profiler Low Density (GGPLD). A result of the synergetic relationship between RAAA and GeneSeek, the GGP-LD delivers genomic information on tested animals equivalent to the ‘50K.’ Producers who opt for the GGP-LD will receive the same gains in accuracy as the higher density 50K and 80K tests, but at $48 per animal, the cost of the GGP-LD is significantly less. Identical to the RA50K, genomic data delivered through GeneSeek’s GGPLD test will be incorporated into the tested animal’s EPDs, and the accuracy increased accordingly. Contact RAAA to order your GGP-

LD tests today or learn more about GeneSeek’s GGP-LD testing option.

DNA Reminders Weaning is upon us for spring-born calves, and it is a good opportunity to collect DNA samples on animals. Also, submit samples early to make sure all DNA needs are met in plenty of time for any deadlines, whether the samples are submitted for parentage or genomic merit. THR - Total Herd Reporting Update Spring 2014 Weaning Worksheets Postcards were sent out in August as a reminder that it is time to report data on Spring 2014-born calves. Members may request a hard copy of the weaning worksheets or request an Excel template on which to report data. Data may also be reported online via Member Data-REDS. To

ensure data is included in the next National Cattle Evaluation (NCE), data is due back RAAA the end of October. National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) Deadline: • Fourth Week in October for Paper Submissions • Last Week in October for Electronic Submissions Avoid Reactivation Fees Dams previously listed on the Fall Herd Inventory will be inactivated if a calf record or reason code (reason why there is no calf record) is not submitted for the year 2013. The National Office will send out a list of females that have been inactivated the last week in October. To avoid inactivation fees, submit a 2013 calf record or reason code by December 1 to avoid inactivation fees. ■

Earning Their Keep – Keeping Their Heritage by Tracey Koester, American Red Angus Magazine editorial coordinator

The Missouri River flows along the eastern edge of Claymore’s ranch, providing 36 miles of winding riverbank and fresh drinking water for the cattle. 22 American Red Angus Magazine ■ October 2014

The Missouri River gently flows through north-central South Dakota, winding its path through the rugged terrain known

locally as the “breaks.” Ash tree coulees and steep draws cut

their way to the top of the breaks where natural prairie grasses and wild flowers wave in the Dakota breeze. Other than an occasional barbed-wire fence and stock tank, this land remains pristine to its formation from a glacier 2 million years ago. Claymore Ranch near McLaughlin, S.D., lies on the west side of the Missouri River along 36 winding miles of riverbank. This land has been ranched by a member of the Claymore family for 130 years.

Today, Shawn Claymore, the fifth generation, is charged with the care and conservation of this beautiful, prolific ranch – and instead of the bison that roamed the prairies during his ancestors’ time, he chooses to stock the ranch with Red Angus cattle.

The fourth, fifth and sixth generations of the Claymore family – (l to r): Duane, Ketch (10), Shawn holding Charlie (18 months), Kaleb (7) and Caitlyn (13).

Earning Their Keep – Keeping Their Heritage

The Red Transition Red Angus cows, however, haven’t always grazed Claymore’s ranch. In 2004, Claymore – who has owned cattle since he was 16 – decided to sell all of his black-hided cows and stocked the ranch with yearling heifers that he bred and sold in the fall. Claymore quickly found running just yearlings wasn’t for him. “I was tired of not having cow-calf pairs. I wasn’t raised to sit around and do nothing, and the winters were pretty boring,” he chuckled. He had also done his homework and recognized that Red Angus heifer calves were gaining in popularity. In 2009, he attended the first Red Angus Feeder Calf Sale hosted by Mobridge Livestock Market, Inc., in Mobridge, S.D., and came home with 489 replacement-quality heifer calves. “I made a lot of new friends that day,” smiled Claymore. “I had a lot of seedstock producers come up and introduce themselves.”

He also met Clint Berry. At the time, Berry was working for the Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) as the commercial marketing director and approached Claymore to welcome him to the Red Angus breed and explain the free marketing services RAAA offers its stakeholders.

“I had never had help marketing my black calves even when I topped the market,” said Claymore. “When Clint came up and talked about how RAAA would help me market my Red Angus calves, it really sealed the deal.” Today, Claymore enrolls his calves in the Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program (FCCP), tagging his calves when he preconditions in September. The FCCP program is paying off, too. His steers generally sell in the top 2 percent and the heifers top the market, often bring the same price or more than their steer counterparts.

Claymore calves his cows in the natural protection of the Missouri breaks. Claymore has sold through the local sale barn, on Superior Livestock Auction and, this year, to a local cattle buyer.

Hitting the Target “My goal is to wean calves that weigh 575 to 585 pounds – to have the entire calf crop within 5 to 10 pounds of each other with no light weights,” said Claymore.

In order to reach that target weight, he tries to have as many calves on the ground in as short of time as possible. That starts by synchronizing estrus in his cows and mass A.I.ing the mature cows in two days. The heifers are synchronized and bred for an earlier calving date, but the first-calf heifers get a by in the A.I. pen. “It’s hard on those young mothers to keep separating their calves when we are synching the cows.”

“It’s a lot of work for those two weeks in June when we synchronize and mass breed over 300 cows a day for two back-toback days,” said Claymore. “ But what other day can you get more work done than on the day you A.I.?”

The ranch’s feed base produces over 6,000 round bales of hay – oats, millet, sorghum, alfalfa and grass.

Earning Their Keep – Keeping Their Heritage

He uses one A.I. sire for the cows and another for the heifers to improve his calf crop’s consistency, then turns out bulls 24 hours after A.I.ing. “Our bulls are an important investment on our ranch,” said Claymore. “We aren’t afraid to buy out of the top pens in the sale – bulls that usually sell to seedstock producers.” He added that the bulls must hold their condition during breeding season when the cows often travel five to six miles a day grazing.

“We need genetics that give us growthy calves that wean up in the fall, but they also need good carcass traits for our calf buyers and strong maternal characteristics in the heifer calves. That combination in one sire can be a tall order to fill.”

Claymore is adamant on purchasing only bulls that have been 50K DNA profiled, increasing the accuracy of their EPDs. “I look at that 50K test as an insurance policy that the bull will produce like his EPDs say he will. If we want to produce the best calves in the country, then we need to buy the best bulls we can.” Claymore also pregnancy ultrasounds his entire cowherd and sells off all cows bred for the third cycle, further tightening his calving season.

Claymore’s cows graze all summer and fall. Their goal is to not feed any hay until after the first of the year.

Tough – and Functional – Females Currently, Claymore runs 870 cow-calf pairs and 140 yearling replacement heifers, but he said he is still in the growth phase. “In order to maintain cash flow, we sell all the heifer calves and then buy bred heifers in the fall and open heifers in the spring to breed.” He buys from reputation Red Angus commercial herds and has built a good rapport with those from which he buys heifers.

Earning Their Keep – Keeping Their Heritage

The ranch is currently designated to carry 1,750 cow-calf pairs but with good conservation practices and grazing management, Claymore hopes to increase his carrying capacity to 2,000 pairs. “The Red Angus cow is a great fit for our environment,” said Claymore, looking over the native grassland. “This is truly cow-calf country and they thrive on our grass and fresh water.” “I also appreciate the Red Angus cows’ docile nature. They are great mothers with incredible maternal instincts,” said Claymore. That maternal instinct is key to Claymore’s profitability during calving season.

The cowherd starts calving the end of March and their only shelter is in the ravines and draws of the Missouri River breaks. “Those cows know how to find good protection from the wind,” said Claymore. “They also know it’s warmer towards the bottom of those draws than up on top.” Calving in big country also means the cows are pretty much on their own. “We check them with horses and ATVs,” said Claymore, “but it’s a long way back to the corral. If we do find a cow with a backwards calf or a leg back, we have to rope her and pull the calf right there in the pasture.”

28 American Red Angus Magazine ■ October 2014

Red Angus cows are a great fit for this South Dakota environment rich in native grass. While calving ease is one of Claymore’s top priorities and one of the benefits of his Red Angus cowherd, he expects his cows to birth an 80- to 100-pound performance calf unassisted, and for the calf to hit the ground and start growing.

The 2-year-old heifers start calving the end of February, but because of the harsh winter conditions that time of year, Claymore calves them in the barn. Plus, he likes to keep a closer eye on his first calvers.

Earning Their Keep – Keeping Their Heritage

“Regardless of the breed or the calving ease of the sire, you’re still going to have help some heifers,” he explained. “But once the calves are a few days old and traveling, we kick them out to a nearby pasture to prevent disease and injuries like calves getting stepped on in overcrowded corrals.” Redefining Maintenance Energy Claymore never pampers his cowherd. “They have to make it on their own and get their own feed,” he said. “We aren’t out here babying them, petting them or giving them names.”

He reserves pastures for fall and winter grazing and expects the cows to forage for their feed until the first of the year. “If we get a lot of snow that covers up the cured grass and we have to start feeding before January, we risk running out of feed.” Once they do start feeding hay during the bitter cold of mid-winter, Claymore and his crew carry round bales to the top of the draws and let them roll out down the hill. “When the cows hear the tractor, they start coming back in – usually a two-hour trek spanning five or six miles – from where they have been winter grazing.” Claymore also supplements them with distillers grain cake cubes for added protein and energy during the last trimester. “I like feeding cake,” he said. “The boss cows might get a few

Claymore puts up over 6,000 round bales of hay – oats, millet, sorghum, alfalfa and grass. He also rents a neighbor’s cornfield after harvest to chop and bale the corn stalks. Fresh water is abundant in the summer with 36 miles of the river’s edge along their pastures. However, in order to provide fresh drinking water and better manage his cattle’s grazing patterns away from the river, Claymore has installed 29

Earning Their Keep – Keeping Their Heritage

miles of underground fresh water pipeline feeding 38 stock tanks. “I don’t like stock dams (ponds),” said Claymore. “They get stale and the calves don’t gain as well. Fresh drinking water means more pounds at weaning.” The Heritage – The Future Located on the Standing Rock Sioux Indian Reservation, the ranch is more than grazing acreage – it is their family’s heritage.

“We take pride in caring for the land and to not overgraze it,” said Claymore. “I want to be able to pass down this ranch to my children, the sixth generation of Claymores.” Shawn’s father, Duane, is semi-retired but continues to help on the ranch and runs yearlings and share cattle of his own. He is also a member of the tribal council and works to ensure a prosperous future for his grandchildren and preserve their heritage. “This ranch has been in our family for 130 years, and with good management and a solid vision for the future, this land will continue to provide for my kids and grandkids,” concluded Claymore. “Red Angus cattle will play a significant role in building that future.” ■

Starts with selecting dependable Red Angus replacements Building a profitable cowherd ...

by Larry Keenan, Director of Breed Improvement

The profitability being experienced in the beef industry continues to amaze producers across the U.S. Just as exciting, the analysts are predicting at least another year of record prices before the markets slow down. As a result, many producers who culled deep into their herds due to previous droughts are now preparing to restock to pre-drought numbers. In many restocking cases, replacement heifers can represent a significant percentage of the total cowherd. Therefore, producers must be confident that the heifers selected for replacements have the ability to solidify the sustainability of the operation. Red Angus stands ready to fulfill this need. Commercially Focused Since the inception of the Red Angus Association of America (RAAA), Red Angus has

faithfully followed the founding commercialfocused philosophies, which in fact were one of the drivers in the establishment of RAAA. From the beginning, the Association has been truly dedicated to increasing the success of commercial producers who utilize Red Angus genetics in their operation.

This is largely achieved by delivering to commercial producers the ultimate profit-driving combination of reliable genetic evaluations and value-adding tools for the resulting commercial progeny. These philosophies provide the foundation for the tremendous success

Selecting dependable Red Angus replacements

that our members and commercial producers continue to enjoy today.

Red Angus genetics must perform to the standards of the toughest commercial producers; thus, Red Angus cattle are genetically evaluated in a commercial setting. Appreciating the fact that commercial producers depend on the entire herd for profitability, not just the top 50 percent, Red Angus adopted Total Herd Reporting (THR) in 1995. THR requires each member to report the performance of every cow in the herd through the submission of weaning weight of her progeny. Such complete contemporary group reporting serves as the backbone in providing commercial producers with the most reliable genetic selection tools to use in their selection decisions. Obviously, the built-in reliability that results from THR-based evaluations are passed on to the commercial progeny, thus providing producers with dependable replacement heifers. Total Herd Reporting serves to not only provide unbiased genetic evaluations on the calf crop, but as well, we are able to record the production of every Red Angus cow, therefore, enabling RAAA to provide genetic predictions on maternal production traits that have a significant impact on commercial producer profitability. Only through THR, can you truly assess the productive lifespan of a sire’s daughters, as through THR we have access to every cow’s calving records.

Keeping Them in the Herd This allows Red Angus to provide profit-demanding commercial producers with the most critical herd-building tool

Through THR, we are able to determine which exposures resulted in an actual calving event, thus, truly measuring fertility. – Stayability EPD – which predicts the ability of a sire’s daughters remaining productive in the herd until at least 6 years of age. Holding true to the commercial focus, once females enter the cowherd, Red Angus’ Stayability EPD calculation requires those females to calve every year in the same season until 6 years of age, and not be culled for any non-reproductive reason (disposition, feet, udder, etc.) in order to receive a positive stayability observation.

Red Angus genetics must perform to the standards of the toughest commercial producers; thus, Red Angus cattle are genetically evaluated in a commercial setting. 40 American Red Angus Magazine ■ October 2014

Stayability is by far the most economically relevant trait impacting commercial operations profitability. Producers who focus on increasing longevity enjoy the ability to spread the costs associated with placing females into production over a greater number of marketed offspring. Additionally, by increasing stayability, producers are able to cash crop a higher percentage of the heifer calf crop as fewer replacements are required to maintain stocking rates.

Selecting dependable Red Angus replacements

Herds that excel in stayability enjoy the ability to directly reduce exposure to costs of placing additional females into production (open heifers, calving difficulty, etc.). Through placing emphasis on the Stayability EPD, producers are able to simultaneously maximize revenue and minimize expenses, which obviously has a positive impact on profitability.

data on all registered animals in 1954 is a testament to this focus. Building upon this philosophical foundation, Red Angus continues to provide members and commercial producers with dependable EPDs on all traits of economic importance.

Through THR, we are able to determine which exposures resulted in an actual calving event, thus, truly measuring fertility. Selecting replacement heifers sired by Red Angus bulls with a favorable HPG EPD increases heifer pregnancy rates, therefore increasing rancher’s profitability.

As commercial producers begin restocking the nation’s cowherd, emphasis must be placed on herd-building traits, thus, providing a greater opportunity for long-term profitability and success.

Getting Them Bred Another herd-building tool provided through THR is the Heifer Pregnancy (HPG) EPD. Through submitting the recommended data to stay in compliance with THR rules, our members inform us which retained yearling heifers were exposed to breeding.

Whether you market weaned calves or retain ownership in the feedyard and sell your calf crop on a carcass grid, Red Angus has the tools necessary to maximize revenue. Combining the herd-building tools of stayability and heifer pregnancy, along with Red Angus’ reliable genetic predictions for calving ease, growth and carcass merit, provides commercial producers with an ideal suite of tools to develop profitable cowherds.

A Focused Foundation Red Angus has focused on delivering reliable genetic selection tools based on objective tests from the commencement of RAAA. Requiring submission of weaning weight

Red Angus stakeholders enjoy the benefit of having dependable EPDs to drive selection for these herd-building traits. As a result, commercial producers selecting Red Angus replacement heifers can trust that their investment will have a positive return. ■

Too Much Income a Burden? by Bob Kemble, CPA, The Nichols Accounting Group P.C.

Some may think so from a tax perspective, but we emphatically say, “No!” Having too much income in one year is a good problem to have, as long as you have an operating plan and cash-flow budget. If you have no plan, then it’s sadly an opportunity wasted. Many cattle-related operations will have excess income problems this year due to high cattle prices and the USDA Livestock Forage Disaster Program. For every operation, the plan will look different. The most important part of the plan is whether or not it makes business sense. Take a step back and assess what you’re trying to accomplish, and then determine the steps that will get you there. If you don’t have an operating plan and cash-flow budget, you will not be able to prioritize what you actually need to spend your cash on. A good operating plan should tell you: • Financial implications of the operating decisions you make for one year – production, marketing, capital and funding • Operating credit requirements • Profitability • Ability to service debts and fund capital expenditures • Impact on working capital and solvency

When building your operating plan, ask yourself what needs to be considered for year-end purposes, i.e., what are the items that need to be repaired or purchased before year-end? For example:

• Take a look at your equipment and ask yourself if replacing that worn-out loader, feed truck or pickup would make your job or life easier, and improve efficiency.

• Do you need to upgrade your irrigation system if part of your operation is connected to growing forage?

All of the previously mentioned items should be deductible under section 179, but section 179 is in a state of flux. Under Section 179 of the tax code, a business taxpayer can currently deduct – or “expense” – qualified assets placed in service during the year, up to a specified amount. A maximum deduction of $500,000 was allowed for 2013, subject to a phase-out for combined assets in excess of $2 million. However, when this provision expired after 2013, the limit for 2014 reverted to a paltry $25,000 with just a $200,000 phase-out threshold. Both chambers of Congress are debating legislation that would extend the higher Section 179 expensing allowance. The experts indicate they are in a “60 percent to 70 percent range of passage” after the November elections. We are advising our clients to proceed with cautious optimism regarding section 179. Some other questions to consider for year-end planning might be:

• What does your debt picture look like? This may be the perfect time to get your debt paid down so it is manageable when the prices of cattle eventually come down. Being prepared for lower cattle prices in the future will be critical to your continued success. Someday cattle will sell for less than it costs to raise them and that is when the marginal operators go out of business. • Is it time to expand and/or strengthen your herd, holding back more heifers for breeding? • Is it time to add more deeded range ground so you don’t have to rely as

heavily on the government grazing permits?

• Should you be purchasing additional feed this fall to ensure you will be able to maintain your herd if drought conditions persist? Additionally, you could consider alternatives to defer income, such as: • Selling your cattle on contract. Note: This should only be done with a company that is very well capitalized and trusted.

• If you are in an area of drought, there are ways to defer income if you had to sell more cattle this year as compared to an average year, per various IRS code sections.

Once you know what you need for your operation – whether it is replacing equipment, paying down debt, expanding your operation, preparing for extended drought conditions, or a combination of all of the above – you need to be able to analyze different planning scenarios through a simulation process to ensure the results from the implementation of your plan. This may sound like a lot of work if you do not have a documented process in place – and it is – but taking the time to appropriately plan and document for your operation’s future is invaluable. If you don’t have a plan in place and aren’t sure where to start, contact a professional that can help. Bottom line, having a good income year is a good thing. We like to say at our firm, “Don’t let the tax tail wag the business dog.” This statement is true regardless of any situation. A plan will help you make solid business decisions that will increase success, mitigate risk and minimize tax from a long-term and bigpicture perspective. ■

Calving Ease Diamond D Angus bulls have a long history of outstanding calving ease

Genetics Our Black Angus herd is very unique in the breed. Our black or Red Angus bulls make great out-cross sires for Red or Black Angus producers. When we joined the Red Angus Association in 2004, our goal was to offer Red Angus bulls and females that would match our black bulls in type. First and foremost, the mother cow needs to produce a calf every year and on time. She needs to do that for 10 or more years and stay sound. We have had our Black Angus cows do this for up to 22 years and very common over 15 years. The base of our Red herd came from our Blacks.

Consistency 50 years of breeding like cattle on like cattle on like cattle. This eliminates variables.

Affordable Bulls sold in the fall have been significantly more affordable than spring sales. More than 50% of our bulls sold the last two years brought $3,000 or less.

Juniors travel north to Showdown in American/Canadian Exchange Program

Joseph Groce of Lexington, N.C., and Jaclyn Ketchum of Plevna, Mont., headed north in July for their great Canadian adventure through the American/Canadian Exchange Program, participating in the Canadian Junior National Showdown in Virden, Manitoba, Canada. The two Junior Red Angus (JRA) members were welcomed by Belinda Wagner, Canadian Junior Angus Association (CJAA) coordinator, and the CJAA board. They assisted the CJAA board in setting up and preparing for the cattle to move in. “This year’s Showdown was held outside,” said Groce. “Cattle were stalled in a barn, but the show ring was outside.” Showdown kicked off with a fitting demonstration and annual meeting. Both Groce and Ketchum participated in livestock judging and team grooming contests, joining forces to place fifth in team grooming. CJAA members shared their animals and equipment, allowing Groce and Ketchum to compete in the showmanship competition where Groce placed third out of ten competitors.

They also competed in or helped with print marketing, public speaking, sales talk and team judging competitions. They also enjoyed bringing a taste of America to the CookOff contest using Groce’s steak rub and applesauce recipe.

On the last day, the JRA members assisted by handing out ribbons to the class winners in the cattle show, and enjoyed the banquet, awards presentation, auction and dance with their new Canadian friends. “I met people from several different farms and this experience was really great!” said Groce. “I learned a lot, seeing cattle in a different country and experiencing a totally different environment than I am use to at home. In Showdown, Red Angus and Black Angus compete at the same time, and are not separated into two associations as we do here in the United States – Angus is one breed.”

“I really enjoyed this trip and learned a lot,” said Ketchum. “I met a lot of wonderful people and was able to look through a lot of different cattle. I always find it interesting to see what people have to do to survive in their environment and being able to do that in Canada was very rewarding.” n 54 American Red Angus Magazine n October 2014

Profit returned to ranch starts with the Red Angus female by Rebecca Mettler for American Red Angus Magazine

Profitability starts with the cow. The right cow – chock-full of maternal capabilities and bred for efficiency and longevity – sets the stage for profit returned to the ranch. Red Angus-influenced cows are the profitable answer for many commercial operations and are also utilized in research herds. Rick Funston, Ph.D., beef cattle reproductive physiologist with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL), works with the university’s largest cowherd at the Gudmundsen Sand Hills Lab (GSL). The ranch, near Whitman, Neb., runs 700 head of 5/8 Red Angus x 3/8 Simmental cows. GSL is in Nebraska’s cow country and is an integral part of beef research completed at UNL. The research done at GSL is focused on management options that can create more profitability for beef producers. Extended grazing, fetal programming and low-input, heifer-development studies are a few of the applied projects performed at GSL.

“Generally speaking, Red Angus is known as one of the preferred breeds for first-calf heifers.” Matt Spangler

The Sand Hills ranch has become an ideal location to study cattle in a limited resource environment. Funston believes it is important to keep cows in such an environment grazing for most of the production cycle. The herd will graze all but during a period of time close to calving.

“Red Angus has provided a moderate cow that has preformed well in the system,” Funston said.

Funston pointed out that many of the influential breeders within the Red Angus breed are in a limited-resource environment. Influences and circumstances such as environmental conditions tend to shape the type of cow that is produced.

60 American Red Angus Magazine n October 2014

Rick Funston, Ph.D., University of NebraskaLincoln

Matt Spangler, Ph.D., University of NebraskaLincoln

Research from the Meat Animal Research Center (MARC) in Clay Center, Neb., shows that Red Angus is a bit more conservative in mature size and lower in milk production when compared to other popular breeds.

Matt Spangler, PhD, associate professor/beef genetics extension specialist with UNL, sees that as an advantage when producers are thinking about the maternal component of a breeding program.

Profit returned to ranch starts with the Red Angus female

“In seeking lower input females, that tends to lead to lighter mature weights and females that don’t milk as heavy,” Spangler said. Spangler, whose work focuses on quantitative genetics and developing methods and tools for genomic prediction, points out that there is a maintenance component to milk production. Cows that have a higher genetic propensity for milk production take more inputs, even when dry.

“In my mind, profit drivers are input and output traits,” Spangler said. “Performance can’t be thought of by itself and feed requirements should be considered.” From the viewpoint of the whole beef system, fertility, growth and carcass merit are major profit drivers, according to Spangler. “Obviously, first and foremost, is reproduction,” Funston said. “You have to have a live calf before you can worry about anything else.”

Funston said the goal of GSL herd was to produce a cow that was able to maintain her body condition on minimal supplementation while raising a calf, and to uphold a conception percentage rate in the mid-90s. In addition, steer progeny are expected to feed out 100 to 150 pounds heavier than their dams. A Red Angus Base Both Spangler and Funston are proponents of commercial cattlemen implementing a crossbreeding program on their operation.

Funston stated that many large ranches in the area use Red Angus as a base breed for their commercial herds. The breed provides a maternal base to cross with Continental breeds. “Red Angus offers genetic diversity but as a breed has been production oriented and commercially focused,” Funston said.

The crossbreeding system (Red Angus x Simmental) in place at GSL results in heterosis and breed complementarity, both of which add value to the cowherd and resulting offspring.

“With breed complementarity, the product that the steers produce is grading very well from the Red Angus side and has a high amount of lean meat yield from the Simmental influence,” Funston said.

Maternal heterosis accomplished through crossbreeding can accumulate a 20 to 25 percent advantage in cumulative

weaning weight over a straight-bred commercial cow through increased fertility and longevity. Producing an additional calf over a cow’s lifetime can have a large economic impact on any cattle operation, according to Spangler.

Calving Ease “Generally speaking, Red Angus is known as one of the preferred breeds for first-calf heifers,” Spangler said. Producers that select for Calving Ease Direct (CED) have a large advantage because those sires are known to produce less dystocia when bred to heifers.

Nonetheless, Spangler warns producers away from aggressively selecting for CED sires year after year because CED has a slight negative relationship to Calving Ease Maternal (CEM), or the predicted ability of a given animal’s daughters to calve unassisted at 2 years of age. He recommends producers to look for bulls who are acceptable for those two traits instead of extreme in one or the other. Stayability The ability for females to stay within the herd is very important. The Stayability EPD predicts a bull’s ability to sire daughters that remain in the herd. However, putting emphasis on the Stayablity EPD depends on the current level within each individual herd according to Spangler. “If I have cows leaving the herd at age 3 because they fail to rebreed, I’d say it has a huge economic impact on my herd. On the flipside, if the average female is 10 years old, stayability is less of an emphasis because it’s already present,” Spangler said.

Keeping Them Calm Some people think of docility as a convenience trait, one simply useful for safety and handling reasons. However, there is an economic impact as well. According to Spangler, research has shown that more docile animals perform in the feedlot better and have an advantage in carcass merit.

“As feed costs increase and the Choice-Select spread widens, feedlot performance has more of an economic impact,” Spangler said.

Get the right cow At the end of the day, a good cow is one that produces a valuable calf year after year and does so as efficiently as possible. Red Angus has proven its ability to work in any environment, even under conditions with limited resources. The bottom line is that Red Angus traits of maternal excellence equate into a more profitable cow. n

Back to basics on BRD

by John Maday, Managing Editor, Drovers CattleNetwork and Bovine Veterinarian The modern beef industry has come a long way in understanding the array of pathogens involved in bovine respiratory disease syndrome (BRDS), along with the list of environmental and genetic factors associated with the disease, and in developing better vaccines, treatments, diagnostics and management practices. But as several presenters at the 2014 BRDS Symposium pointed out, producers can and must do better. During the two-day symposium, several points became clear. One is that in spite of advancements, we have not seen any significant reduction in the incidence of BRD in feedlots or dairy-calf operations. The reasons behind the ongoing trend are not entirely clear, but probably include more intensive production, genetic susceptibility possibly encouraged by selection pressure on other production traits and a marketing system, particularly for beef

calves, that can include a risky combination of pathogen exposure and stress.

Throughout the conference, presenters outlined research into new technologies and management systems for combating the disease. These include genomic-enhanced selection, pharmacogenomics for development of targeted vaccines and treatments and new diagnostic tools including rapid laboratory analysis, on-farm respiratory scoring, electronic behavior monitoring and the Whisper electronic stethoscope system. While these new approaches hold great promise, it also became clear the industry could significantly reduce losses associated with BRDS by getting back to the basics, and veterinarians can play a key role in helping clients adopt time-tested practices. Good nutrition for the pregnant cow and plenty of high-

quality colostrum for the newborn calf go a long way toward ensuring long-term immunity. Lowstress stockmanship practices help minimize a calf’s vulnerability to disease, and can build trust that allows calves to reveal, rather than hide early signs of morbidity.

Numerous studies have shown a sound preconditioning program incorporating nutrition, planned vaccination protocols and on-farm weaning for at least 30 days – 45 days is better – can dramatically reduce risk of BRDS in calves shipped to feedyards or stocker operations.

So why are more backgrouding operations and feedlots not stocked full of low-risk, preconditioned calves? The answer involves perceptions and economics, says Purdue University veterinarian Mark Hilton. Some cow-calf producers still see preconditioning as a cost, and have not recognized the potential economic returns generated by efficient weight gains and heavier market weights in addition to per-pound premiums. On the buyers’ side, some cattle feeders continue to look for calves they perceive as a bargain, since they’ve sometimes profited by purchasing high-risk calves, straightening them out the best they can and accepting a high-disease incidence as a cost of doing business.

Hilton believes some portion of the backgrounding and feeding sector will continue to take chances on cheaper, high-risk calves if they are available, so the focus should be on educating cow-calf producers on the benefits of early prevention and preconditioning. He suggests that instead of just discussing the buyer-dependent “preconditioning bonus,” veterinarians and the industry should highlight the profit from additional pounds sold and returns per hour for the cow-calf enterprise, which are seller-dependent. In our beef-cattle production system, animal health begins at the cow-calf level, and that, perhaps, is where the veterinarians can have the greatest impact on BRD. ■

Red Angus Producers Assure Quality Product Stakeholders show their commitment to the beef industry through BQA certification by Laurin Spraberry, RAAA Media and Public Relations Coordinator

Delivering a quality beef product to the consumer requires more than just superior genetics – trustworthy handling practices are the link that assures consumer satisfaction.

The Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) is breaking new ground as the first breed association to partner with Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica, Inc. (BIVI) and the Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) program to sponsor the cost of BQA certification – or recertification – for Red Angus stakeholders from Sept. 10 through Oct. 31. BIVI will pick up the $25 to $50 cer-

tification fee for Red Angus stakeholders. As an added incentive, producers who become BQA certified can send in a copy of their certification to the RAAA National Office, and be entered to win a grilling basket that includes a RAAA steak knife set, grill set, cutting board, apron and customized branding iron for their steaks. The lucky recipient will also receive their choice of 1 Liter of Cydectin® Pour On or 500 mL of Cydectin Injectable from BIVI. The checkoff-funded Beef Quality Assurance program is important to the cattle industry as it gives producers a set of best practices for producing quality beef. It also gives

consumers the assurance that the beef they eat is a safe, wholesome, quality product that is raised with the utmost care.

“By offering this opportunity to producers, we are giving them the chance to learn about the latest industry developments and demonstrating to consumers that Red Angus stakeholders care about the safety, wholesomeness and quality of the beef they produce,” said Twig Marston, RAAA CEO. To become BQA certified, or to learn more about the program, visit www.BIVI-BQA.com, access code RAAABQA. ■
