Focus on quality, marketing and customer service What a time to be in the beef industry! It seems that we are seeing continual new highs for all classes of cattle with many prognosticators calling for continued high prices through 2015. We're living in great times in the beef industry, so let's enjoy it! I'm all for a well-deserved pat-on-the-back and payment for long hours, hard toil and deep emotional investment. So let's take a breath, raise a glass and savor the moment. But ... (you probably knew this was coming) let's not rest. Like any great celebration in agriculture, there are still chores to tend to every day. The work never ends and the next calf crop is always just around the bend. Let's not get accustomed to these high prices. Let's not get comfortable with the high demand for Red Angus cattle. Although no one knows what the future holds we can guess that prices won't stay at this level forever. We must keep our pencils and our knives sharpened. As individual cattlemen and as an association, I think we need to keep three main objectives in mind: quality, marketing and customer service.
Stay focused on quality. With high demand for Red Angus cattle, there's temptation to open the gate a few more times into the "keep" pen. The longterm consequences of keeping the questionable replacement heifer or bull will last much longer than these high cattle markets. Remember a few years ago when $8 corn was the talk of the town? How much questionable ground was torn up and planted? What are the ramifications now that we're back in the $3.40 range? Beef producers who are in this for the long haul can be counted on to keep quality and a superior end product at the highest level – and they
6 American Red Angus Magazine ■ September 2014
should reap the benefits of that commitment to quality. Quality work and output of any type is essential – quality genetic predictions, quality DNA results, quality office work, quality breed of cattle. Those all build a strong association with strong members and customers.
Stay focused on marketing. It seems that it would be tempting at this time in history to rest on the laurels of the Red Angus breed. We've got quality grade, we've got heat tolerance, we've got the best mother cows to be found – just to name a few. Do we really need to keep saying it? YES!! Now is the time to keep earning market share with high quality cattle. Now is the time to blow our horns, shout from the rooftops, make a splash-– whatever is your chosen cliché. The point is – this is not the time to take our foot off the gas. Stay focused on customer service. It's tempting in times of high demand and prices to forget that businesses thrive when people are treated well. Whether it's the farmer-feeder who buys your calves, the order buyer in the barn each week or the bull buyer huddled on a bleacher seat on a cold March day, they all deserve fair and just treatment. The goal is to cultivate repeat business. Whether it's a stack of transfers, an FCCP certificate of compliance or tail hair on a DNA card, the goal is a satisfied customer who has received what was promised in the bargain. We are a thriving organization of Red Angus cattlemen and cattlewomen, spanning the United States in production of high quality beef. Every cog in the wheel of this association plays a vital role in the success of Red Angus. So let's savor our victories and stay focused on what brought us to the dance. ■

Red Angus breeders’ dedication reaps rewards We live in amazing times. The cattle market continues to make history as is climbs to meet consumer demands. Technology allows us to increase production, broaden communications and be more efficient than ever before. All the while, people and relationships continue to provide pathways toward life’s adventure and changes. But one thing for certain, time remains the most valuable thing we can spend.
The media reminds us daily of the factors setting cattle prices. The demands of feeding the world, the country’s inventory of beef cattle, drought, availability of feed, cost of business and psychology of the market move the price of cattle up and down. However, beef cattle genetics – day in and day out – remains the foundation of beef production value. Red Angus breeders continue to position themselves and their customers to be the premier supplier of genetics to the beef industry through thoughtful and deliberate breedingstock selections and matings. Technology continues to advance our ability to measure, perform and predict. As an association we continue to study and apply those technologies that are reliable, accurate and beneficial to the membership. Allied companies are advancing new and proven technologies to the industry. Science discoveries that were once considered novel ideas are now common place. Examples include efficient oocyte recovery and IVF technology, instrumental grading, feeder cattle sorting systems, electronic

identification and GPS-guided machinery.
Your RAAA staff will continue to bring technology to you on several fronts especially in genetic evaluation. Stakeholders will then have a variety of opportunities to utilize new and existing technologies. The results will be able to make your operations more efficient, productive and valuable. Attending field days and herd tours this summer have been wonderful experiences for all that have attended. One can only leave those events impressed with the dedication Red Angus breeders have for making a superior product. They have lived the industry and those experiences have shaped their programs. Form, function, performance and efficiency are all words you not only hear but witness as cattle were viewed and discussed. Time has been on their side. It gave Red Angus breeders the opportunities to cultivate relationships and build cowherds. Time has been on the side of our country, with each state and location receiving its blessings and adversities.
This will be the last opportunity to invite you to attend the 2014 Red Angus National Convention and Free Commercial Cattlemen’s or Ladies’ Symposiums in Savannah, Ga. Our tradition has been to spend quality time among Red Angus enthusiasts. Come join your fellow Red Angus breeders, Red Angus staff and industry leaders for an annual meeting that we hope will stimulate thought and conversation as you build the future of the breed. ■

Reflection on accomplishments reveals dedication, success by Larry Keenan, Director of Breed Improvement
RAAA bids farewell to Myron Edelman as he follows a new career path.
The culmination of one’s achievements within an organization not only determines their overall impact, but as well defines their dedication to the organization’s stakeholders. As the Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) bids farewell to Myron Edelman, we reflect back upon his accomplishments that reveal undeniable success. A powerful combination of a true love for Red Angus cattle, a relentless desire for commercial producer success and, most importantly, a faithful following of Red Angus philosophy, enabled Myron to have a storied career at RAAA. Growth of FCCP Enrollments When Myron joined the RAAA team in January of 2009 as the director of added value programs, he was tasked with growing the recognition of Red Angus genetics through the Feeder Calf Certification Program (FCCP). During the fiscal year ending in 2009, RAAA stakeholders tagged 91,725 Red Angus-influenced calves. Myron’s skilled application of pull-through marketing, combined with tirelessly marketing the value of FCCP-tagged calves, has resulted in a 40 percent increase in the number of FCCP-tagged calves per year at his departure from RAAA. Growing RAAA’s Industry Relations Myron’s previous position with Wagonhound Land and Livestock, where he served as the manager of the 2,000-head cow-calf operation and 4,500-head feeder operation, provided him with the valuable experience of understanding the importance of relationships between seedstock suppliers, commercial producers, feeders and packers. Myron used this experience to
grow RAAA’s relations with feeders and packers while simultaneously growing the demand for Red Angus FCCP-tagged calves. His extensive experience using Red Angus genetics and his good eye for cattle provided commercial and seedstock producers a trustworthy and unbiased source for evaluating and purchasing herd bulls.
Release of Allied Access Recognizing the benefits of being able to provide age and source verification to Red Angus stakeholders who utilize hybrid bulls in their crossbreeding programs, Myron led the effort to develop and implement Allied Access. Not only does this program benefit Red Angus stakeholders, but Myron had the foresight to also provide this service to our genetic evaluation partner – American Simmental Association. Choice+ Premium Red Angus Grid Perhaps Myron’s greatest achievement was the development and negotiation of the Choice+ Premium Red Angus Grid. A quality-based marketing grid available through Tyson Fresh Meats, Inc., and exclusive to Red Angus
10 American Red Angus Magazine ■ September 2014
FCCP-tagged calves, the Choice+ program rewards cattle excelling in the cooler. It’s no coincidence that the traits with the greatest premiums are the traits that Red Angus cattle excel in. Without a doubt the greatest valueadding program released by RAAA since the FCCP in 1995, the Choice+ Grid will continue to benefit Red Angus stakeholders for years to come. Interim Co-CEO Recognizing Myron’s experience, professionalism, proven dedication to RAAA and his respect for RAAA philosophies, the RAAA Board of Directors recently placed the reins of the Association in his hands. Myron’s time at the helm of the Association can be described as progressive, motivating and successful. Initiating and completing impactful projects, including the Choice+ Grid, Myron’s focus was constantly on stakeholder success. Concurrently, his desire for staff success was evident through his motivational messages. Encouraging staff to instill a ‘spirit of excellence’ in all that they do individually, coupled with encouraging teamwork, Myron truly desired success for all RAAA staff. As we close the chapter of Myron Edelman’s career at Red Angus, our reflection of his accomplishments reveals that his impact on stakeholder success is at minimal, noteworthy. In reality, Red Angus stakeholders will continue to reap the benefits provided through Myron’s achievements that were driven by his dedication to Red Angus.
On behalf of all Red Angus stakeholders, thank you for all that you have done for the Red Angus breed, Myron. We wish you continued success in the next chapter of your professional career as the CEO of the American Gelbvieh Association. ■

Member Services FAQ What is the NCE? The NCE (National Cattle Evaluation) is the biannual process through which RAAA calculates EPDs for animals in the RAAA database. To ensure inclusion in the NCE, please provide all data through weaning if available. If no weaning is available at this time, submit prior to the next NCE deadline. The EPDs that result from this process are released in January (Spring EPDs) and in July/August (Fall EPDs) each year. Next NCE Deadline • Fourth Week in October for Paper Submissions • Last Week in October for Electronic Submissions
Why do I have to check the “Genetic Statement” box? The genetic statement box acknowledges that you have observed your herd for characteristics of genetic defects. Then if any were found, they were reported to the RAAA. What are the requirements of Total Herd Reporting (THR)? Each cow on active inventory (16 months of age and older) should report one of the three for each calving season. 1) Calf record 2) Reason code for the dam, or 3) Disposal code for the dam. Calving Season for Spring is January 1 to June 30. Calving Season for Fall is July 1 to December 31.
Do I have to report calves born dead or that die shortly after birth? Yes, to give the cow a record for having had a calf (THR compliance). Sire, dam and birth date and/or year are required with applicable disposal code for calf. What does the “regtype” indicate? R – Registered, met all requirements for registration I – Incomplete, pre-registered prior to reporting weaning weight and date. Once weaning data is reported, the calf will move to “registered” status. C – Compute, record on file giving the cow a record for having had a calf, but the calf is not considered registered and cannot be transferred orused as a parent, and will not display EPDs. H – Lease agreement not on file for natural mating of a non-owned sire U – Has not met all genetic defect requirements Z – Has not met DNA parentage requirements
What information do I report when submitting calving records? The following is a list of fields of information for data reporting of calving records under THR guidelines. Please note, RAAA does have an Open Herdbook, therefore fields of information may vary for the reporting process. If you have questions, please refer to the Rules and Regulations or contact the Member Services Dept. • Dam Registration Number • Sire Registration Number • Calf ID/Prefix • Date of Birth • Sex • Birth Weight Group • Twin Code • Mating Code • Color • Horned/Polled/Scurred • Registration Code • Print Registration Paper • Wean Date • Wean Weight • Wean Group • Feed Code
Increased Data = Increased Accuracy = Increased Reliability What data points can I report that will enhance my animals’ EPDs and accuracies? For more information on EPDs, please visit the RAAA website at redangus.org/genetics/ranchers-guide-to-epds • Calf record with pedigree information • Birth weight, weaning weight and yearling weight • Calving-ease scores • Body condition scores • Dam mature weight • Udder scores – suspension and teat size • Heifer exposure data • Ultrasound data • Actual carcass data • Genomic test – RA50K See Instruction Key at right
What are “No Progeny” Reports? Females listed on the “No Progeny” report are active on inventory but have not yet reported a record for compliance of THR requirements. The report should be used to submit the progeny record, reason or a disposal code for the previous calving year. If information is not reported for each cow, the females will be subject to inactivation in October. If all dams were reported in the weaning data worksheet, then you will not be requested to complete a “No Progeny” report. The “No Progeny” reports can be accessed via Member Data-REDS, under “RRTS Registration/Performance Updates.” A printed report can be mailed upon request. If needed, please request as soon as possible. Reports are due the third week in September.
12 American Red Angus Magazine ■ September 2014
What is the RRTS Excel spreadsheet? As many of you know, submitting data online can be a challenge at times. The RRTS Excel spreadsheet is another option to report data (registrations and performance updates) to the Association. Please contact the National Office for a prelisted spreadsheet of cows on inventory.
Why should I submit DNA early? • Reduce getting caught in a time crunch to complete a registration. • Samples may fail due to quantity or quality of sample and have to be resubmitted. • Exclusions may result and you have to try other animals. Is a hair or blood sample better? Blood is better because hair has a higher statistic of failure. Hair also is more time consuming for the lab to extract the DNA. Due to these reasons, the lab is now charging a $1 processing fee per hair sample. How can I prevent any delay in results? Submit good-quality samples, complete paperwork and avoid cross contamination. Also, if sires or dams are not on file with RAAA, please have them sent to us from the respective lab. This ensures results are as accurate as possible. Should animals be registered prior to submitting DNA? If at all possible, yes. This ensures that DNA results will automatically be updated in the database. This is recommended for samples that are being submitted for Genomic Merit (80K). If samples do not have registration numbers, the member will be asked to provide once they are available or the results will not be entered in database.
Why do samples fail? • Cross Contamination (fresh, wet samples stacked on top of each other, new needle not used for each animal) • Dirt/Feces • Chemicals (insecticide, tattoo ink, lotion, GermX, etc.) • Exposure to extreme heat and/or sunlight • Not enough sample What does Qualified, Excluded and Not On File mean? Qualified – The sire/dam of the tested animal were on file and the test confirmed parentage. Excluded – The sire/dam of the tested animal were on file, and the test did NOT confirm parentage. Not On File – The sire/dam does not have a DNA profile on file at the lab with SNP markers and parentage cannot be confirmed at this time. ■

Feeder Fax is a proven marketing tool used to draw attention to load-lot sized offerings of Red Angus-influenced cattle, or large offerings at scheduled sales, marketed via video sales, livestock markets or private treaty. The Feeder Fax breaks down details about feeder cattle and is distributed to our active buyer base to draw added attention to our bull customers' calves.
Video Sales
Red Angus has built alliances with each of the major video auctions. Those relationships have created a tradition of success in marketing Red Angus genetics which are highlighted both onscreen and in the print catalogs. Our bull customers reap the benefits of competitive bidding when large sets of Red Angus cattle are grouped together on sale day.
Livestock Markets
Over 25 livestock markets across the nation host scheduled Red Angus Feeder Calf Sales in the fall and spring each year, with more being added annually. These sales provide a competitive advantage for our bull customers by leveraging volume offerings of Red Angus-influenced feeder cattle and drawing added buyer attention. Our partnering livestock markets gain valuable exposure through our national advertising insertions, direct mailings promoting the sales and face-to-face producer meetings in their area. Repeatedly, these cooperating markets enjoy an increase in customers while building loyalty from Red Angus stakeholders seeking to work with marketing partners who recognize the value of Red Angus feeders.
"In our complicated world, the Red Angus marketing programs are simple, fast and easy. I only have to fill out one sheet of paper and verify the start of my calving season to gain a marketing advantage on my calves." - Will Bledsoe, Bledsoe Ranch, Hugo, CO

Integrity Matters Rancher rebuilds plains of Oklahoma with Red Angus performance and efficiency by Lisa Bryant for American Red Angus Magazine
Will Rogers once said, “Live in such a way that you would never be ashamed to sell your parrot to the town gossip.” Seventy miles south of Rogers’ birthplace, a replica of his boyhood home sits atop the Watson Ranch. It’s at this historic ranch outside of Morris, Okla., where manager Dwayne Miller says Red Angus cattle have the integrity Rogers talked about. Watson Ranch fell into disrepair after 15 years of leasing the land plus damage of oilfield wells. Dwayne Miller has used his Red Angus cows to bring the improved grasslands back to quality pastureland. Rich in legacy since its 1929 origin, the Okmulgee County farm raised Herefords, selling cattle to the likes of John Wayne. When inheritance tax nearly took the ranch from Martha Watson Griffin, the registered cattle were dispersed and the land was leased for 15 years.
The acreage grew into disrepair. Griffin wanted to restore the land and hired Dwayne Miller to spray the weeds. Striking up a conversation about Miller’s past working 28 years for an Oklahoma State University (OSU) research station, she asked Miller and his family to manage the 3,200 acres of owned and 600 leased acres. Wanting to put his research experience to use, managing Watson Ranch allowed Miller that opportu-
nity. Griffin told Miller to take the ranch and run it like his own.
Adoption of Red Angus Cattle At the time, a drought plagued Nebraska and Colorado, and the ranch took in “bed and breakfast” cattle for people trying to hold onto their herds. Miller was already interested in Red Angus, but coincidentally, these cattle were Red Angus-based. Miller was focused on restoring the grasslands and believed commercial Red Angus were key. Buying one of the herds pasturing there during the midwestern drought, the ranch later added a herd from Nebraska’s Fawn Lake Ranch.

The two herds were bred to Hereford bulls, but Miller saw the Red Angus breed gaining momentum so he switched to all Red Angus bulls. Miller had seen several breeds ebb and flow over time. “I knew when everything got black, they would find some reason to start discounting black cattle,” he said.
He appreciated the look and performance of Red Angus, and saw several advantages to the breed, including a marked advantage in heat tolerance over black Angus.
“When we ran red and black cattle, the red cattle would be out an hour to two hours ahead of the black cattle,” he said. “They would start grazing earlier and stay grazing later. They just performed better because of heat tolerance.” Miller believes heat tolerance makes Red Angus more docile than black cattle too. Even calf buyers have commented on how gentle his calves are.
Miller’s wife, Beverly, said, “If he is going to count on me for help, temperament is everything. He and the dog and I can easily move 200 head down the road to another pasture.”

The Red Angus Advantage “I think Red Angus is a genuine breed,” Miller said. “Some breeds have utilized other breeds to enhance their breed. I really believe that Red Angus have held their integrity better than other breeds.
“Red Angus also are as close as I think you can get to maintenance-free,” he said. “They can make it on grass. That’s what

it takes when feed prices are what they have been. It makes the cattle shine when they can look good and perform well on grass that you raised.” His cattle are thriving on the Cherokee Prairie. Most of the original herds have turned over by now, and the 650 cows are primarily farm-raised. Miller keeps outside expenses to a minimum with a goal of a low-input, forage-based operation.
“What we grow here are what the cows make their living on,” he said. Three years of severe drought trimmed the herd by 15 to 20 percent. “It’s given us opportunities to cull our cattle and keep the most productive cows. I use Mother Nature as a tough taskmaster and use the elements to shape the cowherd to where we need to be to perform on what our environment provides. “Working for OSU taught me if you are in the cattle industry, you are really marketing your grass. If you don’t have grass, you will be out of the cattle business soon.” Rotational grazing allows the cows to more efficiently use available forage while helping to manage weeds. With improved grass, four acres support one cow unit.
(Left to right) Dwayne and Beverly Miller manage the 3,200-acre Watson Ranch along with the help of Paul Quin and David Boyett. The four-member staff cares for 650 commercial Red Angus cows.
“I like Red Angus bulls because most of the time if they have been treated right, they will maintain their weight and keep growing and doing well under range conditions without a lot of pampering and extra feed. Red Angus have proven they are a grass-based breed.”
When buying herd bulls, Miller primarily looks for a bull that will perform on grass.

“A lot of producers push their bulls so hard I think they’ve done a disservice. We’ve expected so much of the cattle we took away from the integrity of their bone structure. A lot of the herd bulls you buy look great until you put them with cattle and then they fall apart.” Miller wants bulls with good conformation to withstand growth in addition to traits that indicate calving ease. He also wants bulls with length and depth. Miller watches for balanced EPDs alongside proven accuracy, with increased focus on milk production and yearling weight. To ensure uniformity, Miller searches for moderate bulls that are not extremes at the top of a sale, or at the bottom of the offering. Additionally, he studies a ranch’s bloodlines and production methods. Downsizing the Herd Watson Ranch cows have been downsized to increase efficiency. Some of the original Red Angus cows weighed 1,700 pounds at full condition. Optimum size for the environment is 1,100 to 1,200 pounds.
Miller’s ideal cow is moderate framed and easy fleshing with good udder shape and moderate milk. He avoids high milk production due to the cost to maintain body condition score.

Red Angus-Verified Calves Top Market Miller has marketed the Watson calves by online video on RFD-TV through Superior Livestock Auction for approximately 10 years. In 2006, he noticed the Red Angus Association of America Feeder Calf Certification Program (FCCP) advertised on Superior.

“Since I was using Red Angus, I was interested because it fit really well with what I was doing and the direction I wanted to go. I saw that Red Angus were going to be in demand so it made sense,” he said. FCCP calves are source-, genetic- and age-verified. The trademark yellow tag inspires trust and recognition among potential buyers for the Watson calves. “When our calves are carrying the dangle tag, that verifies that they are really good cattle,” Miller said. “I think it’s paid for itself time and again — every time I’ve sold.” Watson calves receive a premium selling online with the FCCP verification. Miller establishes his price based on the top of the market selling at the Oklahoma National Stock Yards, setting his price at a nickel to 30 cents over what the best cattle sell for in Oklahoma City that day.
Jay DeBord, Miller’s representative from Superior has purchased most of the Watson spring calves each year. “We were visiting before cattle sold in July and Jay asked me what the cattle would bring,” Miller said. “I told him I think they’ll bring more than $2.50. Jay replied that he thought they would bring $2.60. The calves sold for $2.80 and topped the market for their weight class.”

The disposition and performance has been outstanding on the cattle. “When you top the market, you can figure out that they are good cattle,” he continued. “Red Angus have been extremely popular the past three or four years. Red Angus are the market toppers right now.”
DeBord said Red Angus heifer calves are in high demand, citing a fall sale in El Reno, Okla., where Red Angus heifers brought $15 per hundredweight more than their steer mates. “Seven or eight years ago, all the premiums went to the black Angus, but it looks like the Red Angus are the premium cattle right now,” DeBord concluded. Proving their performance and efficiency, Red Angus cattle are likely to graze Watson Ranch pastures for years to come. Will Rogers was a legendary son of Oklahoma, and now Red Angus cows are leaving the same storied mark on the Oklahoma prairie. ■

Too Many Cooks in the Kitchen Spoil the Broth by Michael Flerchinger, CPA, The Nichols Accounting Group P.C.
Many of us have heard the saying, “Too many cooks in the kitchen will spoil the broth.” This saying goes much further than the kitchen and is very much applicable to many small, family-run farms and ranches.
Too many bosses on the ranch may lead to confusion and a poorly run operation. When there are too many people who perceive themselves as “the boss,” you have a dysfunctional management structure. All too often this will lead to the ranch being split-up or, in the worst cases, being liquidated altogether.
In the mid-20th Century many ranches were managed by the founder of the operation and often times children were involved. It was clear they were to do the job they were told to do, no more and no questioning was to be involved. Over time family ranches have grown in size and sophistication of how the operation is run. Unfortunately, the management structure has not followed suit and the iron fist of the elder generation rules by default. In order for family ranches to grow and continue to the next generation, they must adapt with the changing times and develop sustainable organizational plans and begin to define roles within the organization. An organizational plan is a high-level view of how the ranch will operate from a managerial and task assignment perspective. The attributes and requirements of those who fill these positions begins to define the roles in the organization. There is by no means any one cookie-cutter approach to an organizational plan. In fact, if done properly it
will change as the ranch grows and transforms its operations.
The organizational plan – if drawn out in a picture – will resemble a family tree. However, do not think that the high-level positions will necessarily be occupied by immediate or even distant family member employees.
At the top of the organization is the group of people, or person, that the rest of the ranch will answer and be accountable to. This role in the organization is typically seen as the Board of Directors or equivalent. They are seen as a sounding board for advice but typically do not directly define and initiate the activities of the ranch. Often times the Board will consist of the elder generations, major owners and managers within the ranch.
Another board not typically thought of for a ranch is an Advisory Board (AB). An AB is made up of outside, thirdparty advisors. This would include – but is not limited to – an attorney, a CPA, investment advisor, an insurance agent, and so on. The individual purpose of these Board members is fairly clear, however, to be truly effective you should have an AB that is working as a team to be an independent advisor. Usually, the Board of Directors, or equivalent will work closely with the AB. It’s not unusual for an AB to meet with, in whole or in part, throughout the year with the ranch stakeholders to discuss the ranch and how to best serve and advise them. In our firm, we meet regularly with attorneys and other advisors to discuss short and long-term goals of our ranch clients and how best to achieve those goals.
Further down in the organizational plan of the ranch, the management and roles become more narrowly defined with more specific responsibilities. Again, the size of the ranch will define how deep the organization will be defined. Speaking within the organization only, below the Board of Directors there may be another individual that reports to them, such as a general manager. Underneath the general manager there may be a level of managers responsible for different areas of the ranch. For example, there may be a herd manager, a hay operations manager, a pasture manager, and so on.
One of the common mistakes made in the organizational plan and assigning roles is that they are occupied by someone simply because of their relational status to another member within the family. This is a poor practice for a multitude of reasons. A couple of the most important reasons are: 1) The person may simply not be the right person for the job and is unable to excel like someone else might. 2) The person may not have an interest to be in that particular position, which will lead to discontentment and again, a lack of expected outcomes. Ranching is rich with tradition and nothing should change those traditions just because the environment in which they operate changes. However, they should be willing to accept a certain level of change from an operational perspective in order for the ranch to prosper and continue to the next generations so that they can carry on those traditions. n

Would you buy that bull again?
If you knew then what you know now…
by Larry Keenan, RAAA Director of Breed Improvement
As weaning time approaches for spring-calving herds, most commercial producers are drawing conclusions on the success of their previous sire selection decisions. By now, producers have a good assessment of the calving ease, survivability and performance in calves sired by their new bulls. Even more critical to the long-term success of an operation is the assessment of the firstcalf heifers from each sire group. Did they calve unassisted? Did they milk enough? Were they good mothers? And, most importantly, did they rebreed? Now think back to when you purchased those bulls. In making your selection decisions you set the bar high. In order to have maximum accuracy in the EPDs on which you based your selection decisions, you only considered seedstock producers who measured all traits. You refreshed yourself on RAAA EPDs and used them in your selection decisions instead of misleading adjusted weights or ratios.
Consider this: If you were given the opportunity to include the information gained from the first calf crop in your
selections, would it change your final selection decision? If you knew then what you know now, would you still buy those bulls? Would you pay more for those bulls because you have more information and therefore are more confident that you are making the right decision?
While this may seem far-fetched, seedstock producers actually have the ability to provide their customers with such information through the use of DNA tests for genetic merit. Often referred to as 50K or 80K tests, these genetic merit DNA tests simply provide data that is incorporated into EPD calculations. The end result: EPDs on nonparent bulls that contain as much information as that from their future calf crop. Through use of such genetic merit tests, producers can have more confidence that their heifer bull prospect is truly a calving-ease specialist, or the cowherd-building bull prospect will produce sustained profitgenerating females. “Using bulls that are 50K tested is a huge resource to us,” said Shawn Claymore of McLaughlin, S.D. “It’s a great insurance policy that a 50K-tested bull

will produce according to his EPDs and that makes him more valuable to me.” Claymore ranches in north-central South Dakota in the rough terrain west of the Missouri River and markets both FCCP-tagged feeder calves and commercial replacement heifers. Likewise, Mike Coffey of Mass City, Mich., seeks every opportunity to add value to his calves. He said using bulls that are 50K tested gives his operation an advantage in improving their genetics and adding profitability.

Would you buy that bull again?
“I am a firm believer in genetic testing,” said Coffey. ”The cow-calf production cycle is a long process and bulls cost a lot of money. Purchasing bulls that are 50K tested gives us a better way to get those genetics on the ground faster.”
Seedstock producers who provide their customers with next-generation EPDs that include data from genetic merit DNA tests can have confidence that their customers are given the maximum amount of information to include in their selection decisions, thus, increasing customer satisfaction.
“I think the 50K test will differentiate seedstock producers,” said Eric Christensen of Weldona, Colo. “Those that are willing to spend the extra money to 50K test their bulls will be able to offer animals with truer, more accurate EPDs.
“I think the 50K test will differentiate seedstock producers,” said Eric Christensen of Weldona, Colo. “Those that are willing to spend the extra money to 50K test their bulls will be able to offer animals with truer, more accurate EPDs. It’s important to our operation to know what we are purchasing. It will make a difference in the bulls we purchase and the amount we are willing to spend on those bulls.” Christensen and his family own a cowcalf and feeder operation, and feed cattle to a finished weight. They have won multiple Grid Master awards. Animals whose EPDs are reinforced by DNA genetic merit data are often denoted as such in sale catalogs. RAAA also displays this information on the “Animal Search” results accessible through RedAngus.org.
Producers interested in acquiring valuable genetic information through a DNA test can do so conveniently through RAAA. Submitted samples are processed at GeneSeek, who is RAAA’s genomic partner and a leader in the DNA industry. Alternatively, producers can submit samples to Zoetis, who has its own genetic merit test. While there are differences between the two DNA tests, both are incorporated into the tested animal’s EPD calculations. While DNA tests are perceived to be a new technology in the cattle industry, producers should realize the science of
46 American Red Angus Magazine n September 2014
DNA testing has been proven to be accurate by the scientific community. Additionally, the process of incorporating the DNA test data into RAAA EPDs has been evaluated and approved by RAAA’s Technical Committee. Because these important steps have been taken, producers can have confidence that EPDs supercharged with genomic data provides the most informative data to use in selection decisions. “As a commercial producer I am going to choose sound science and always purchase a 50K-tested bull over a non50K-tested bull,” said Claymore.
Talk to your bull supplier today to see if they are providing you with EPDs that are backed by all available data (calving ease score, birth weight, weaning weight, yearling weight, ultrasound carcass data, actual carcass data, mature weight and body condition score of dam at weaning, heifer exposure/pregnancy data, etc.) and DNA genetic test results. n
At Crump Red Angus we are very optimistic about the future of the cattle industry and hope that all Red Angus cattlemen are able to take full advantage of the markets this fall!

Juniors experienced California Dreamin’ at 2014 Round-Up
California Dreamin’ 2014 Junior Red Angus Association Round Up
by Jaclyn Ketchum, JRA National Director
Day 1 - Tuesday, June 24, 2014 Everyone was California Dreamin’ in Sacramento, Calif., as Round-Up kicked off at 7 a.m. with registration and check-in at the Hampton Inn. A total of 45 juniors from 12 states and Canada loaded the charter bus and headed to the California State FFA headquarters to participate in ice breakers led by past California State Officer Kelcie Jones. Juniors enjoyed a Taco Truck Lunch. After lunch the group headed to Prima Frutta farms to tour crops, equipment and machinery, and learned about walnut processing. The final event of the day was a tour of Mendoza Red Angus in Valley Springs, Calif. While at Mendoza Red Angus, juniors participated in a weight-guessing contest and Barnyard Olympics. A local Farm Bureau member and brand inspector talked to juniors about the rules and regulations of brands and also how to become involved in the Farm Bureau. Juniors enjoyed a wonderful meal and ice cream sundaes.
Day 2 – Wednesday, June 25, 2014 Wednesday was a day of fun and exploration. The group traveled to Yosemite National Park and spent the whole day enjoying the beautiful outdoors. Juniors enjoyed California Trivia and Red Angus Bingo on the bus ride to the park. After taking a photo (one of many) and eating lunch, the group was allowed to explore the beautiful park on their own. Many juniors climbed through tall boulders to reach the bottom of a Lower Yosemite Falls. Once the climb was complete many juniors swam underneath the waterfall. Juniors enjoyed this small adventure but were ready to get out of the freezing cold water. Day 3 – Thursday, June 26, 2014 The majority of Thursday was spent at Fresno State University (FSU). While at FSU, juniors toured their meat science department and the FSU Gibson Farm Market. Juniors competed in several contests during their visit at FSU including livestock judging, equipment identification, Stockman’s Quiz, prepared speaking and extemporaneous speaking. Stacey Gunderson, a Cargill Meat Solutions representative, shared a few words with the group as well.
56 American Red Angus Magazine ■ September 2014
The juniors then loaded the bus again and traveled to Sanger, Calif., to tour Awalt’s AA Acres. Awalts had various breeds to look at including Red Angus. Gill Awalt explained his working facilities, training methods and nutrition plan. The group enjoyed pizza and then traveled to Old English Rancho where Johnny and Nathan Hilvers gave the group a tour of their Thoroughbred horse operation. The group enjoyed seeing their breeding barns, several of their top sires and the racetrack.
Juniors experienced California Dreamin’ at 2014 Round-Up
Day 4 – Friday, June 27, 2014 Friday started off with a trip to Firebaugh, Calif., where the group participated in a ranch tour of Silveira Brothers Angus. The group listened to Rick Blanchard explain how he has adapted his land to become more productive and also about their grazing rotations and pasture flood-irrigation systems. While at Silveiras, the group competed in the team advocacy contest and enjoyed a presentation from Celeste Settrini entitled “Being an Advocate for Agriculture.” After the tours and competitions, the group enjoyed lunch and then loaded the bus yet again.
This time the bus traveled to the Harris Ranch in Coalinga, Calif. The group was able to tour both the feedlot and the horse division. The Harris Feedlot was an eye opener to many juniors. The Harris Ranch houses 250,000 cattle, many of which are dairy cattle, on 800 acres. Their state-of-the-art truck washes along with their feed processors were also an attraction. After finishing the feedlot tours, juniors were excited to travel to the horse division. While the tour did not include a viewing of California Chrome, juniors did get to see his sire. At the end of the tours, the group traveled to Lodi, Calif., where they competed in the Beef Quiz Bowl and Chinese Auction. Day 5 - Saturday, June 28, 2014 They say happy cows come from California and Round-Up attendees did get to see some happy dairy cows near Lodi, Calif. After enjoying milk and cookies, the group headed to an In and Out Burger for lunch and then on to Linden, Calif., where juniors toured a walnut processing plant and had the opportunity to run a shaker which is used to remove walnuts from the trees. Next on the agenda was a tour of McPhee Red Angus. The group broke down into Leadership, Public Relations and Fundraising committees to discuss how to better the JRA in those areas.
The group then went into the annual National Junior Red Angus business meeting where topics were discussed and new members were elected to the National Junior Red Angus Board of Directors. Once the meeting was adjourned several juniors attended Mass while the rest looked through cattle and participated in a weight-guessing contest. That evening, juniors enjoyed a wonderful meal and then were recognized for their achievements in the different contests held throughout the week at the awards ceremony.
2014-2015 Junior Red Angus Board of Directors (L to R) Madelyn Mushrush, Strong City, Kan.; Rachel Davis, Montpelier, Va.; Jaclyn Ketchum, Plevna, Mont.; Kevin Tlach, Britt, Iowa; Anna Miller, Linden, Calif., and John Nelson, Chickasha, Okla.

Round-Up wrapped up with a barn dance and games. Juniors left Round-Up with knowledge about California’s agriculture industry and a unique experience that they could add to their résumés. It was a great Round-Up and next year juniors can expect to have a blast in North Dakota “From the Badlands to the Bison!” ■

In Memory... Emily Ruth Larson
Emily Ruth Larson, 71, died Sunday, July 6, 2014, at home surrounded by family on the ranch she loved so much. Emily was born Dec. 22, 1942, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, to Charles A. and Hester (Wray) Williams. She was a whirlwind of activity at Oskaloosa High School, Class of 1961. She received a B.A. in history from Carleton College in 1965. Her freshmen year at Carleton she met the love of her life, David Larson. They were married in 1965, spent two years in Coronado, Calif., and then moved to Minneapolis, Minn. In 1975, they surprised everyone when they accepted a partnership position in a Montana cattle ranch and moved their young family to Chinook, Mont. In 1978, they purchased their own ranch north of
Big Timber, Mont. Together, Emily and David built one of the premier Red Angus cattle herds in the country. Emily loved to talk extensively about cattle, usually with a small dog (or two) at her feet.
Though small in stature, Emily was a vibrant woman of immense spirit and determination. Beset by increasingly painful medical problems for the last 25 years, she maintained an optimistic and courageous outlook. Emily didn’t let anything keep her from being a loving wife, mother and friend.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made on Emily’s behalf to the Chronic Pain Program at the Bozeman Deaconess Foundation, 931 Highland Blvd., Suite 3200, Bozeman, MT 59715 (memo line: Palliative Care). She is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, David, and their three children: Chris Larson (Cassandra Dickson) of Portland, Ore.; Kim Larson of Bozeman,
