A message from the RAAA Board of Directors This is an unprecedented time in the cattle industry and the Red Angus breed holds a leadership position in rebuilding America's cowherd. Demand for Red Angus cattle is high and optimism is great for the future of the breed. We know as Red Angus members this great optimism has been somewhat tempered by the uncertainty within the walls of our association as we've dealt with staff turnover and a search for a Chief Executive Officer. The past six months have tested the mettle of staff, board and members alike. We have gone through a difficult time together, and we truly believe that a bright new day is dawning for the Red Angus Association of America (RAAA).

The Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) Board of Directors announced the hire of Twig Marston, Ph.D., of Norfolk, Neb., as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Marston assumed the leadership role Jan. 20, 2014.
“Twig has built a grounded, practical, wellinformed knowledge and appreciation for the RAAA and its principles through his combined experienced,” said Tim Whitley, RAAA president. “As an industry leader, communicator and team builder, he is excited to work with RAAA staff and membership to further the goals and visions of the association.” Marston was born and raised on a diversified ranching outfit in Kansas where his family raised both commercial and purebred cattle. He earned an animal science degree at Kansas State University and returned to his family’s operation before working on a ranch in Nebraska. He earned his masters in animal breeding and genetics at K-State, and later, his doctorate at Oklahoma State University in ruminant nutrition.
Marston worked as a senior beef nutritionist at Hubbard Milling Co. in Minnesota then returned to K-State as an Extension livestock specialist and instructor of undergraduate beef classes. For the past five years, he led the University of NebraskaLincoln’s Northeast Extension Center as its research and Extension director.
From 2002 to 2010, Marston served as the executive director for the Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) assisting with the standardization and application of performance data. During his tenure he played a role in revising BIF guidelines, developing the udder scoring system, incorporating genomics into genetic evaluation and began work on residual feed intake. He also played an active role in planning and implementing the research symposium and annual meeting each year. “My vision is to evaluate the opportunities that continue to position Red Angus in a relevant role in the beef industry,” said Marston. “Relevance creates demand and demand creates opportunities for Red Angus members and stakeholders.”

“I believe the foundation of the Red Angus breed is defined in the association’s core policies,” he said, “to seek out and implement new technologies based on sound, scientific principles. In addition, the true measure of the breed’s success lies in the financial well being of its customer – the cow-calf producer. These core policies define and identify Red Angus breeders and their dedication to the industry.”
While at K-State, his research program targeted increasing cowherd productivity, health and profitability. Studies on EPD verification, heifer development, reproduction and fertility, weaning systems, winter supplementation, disease prevention and post-weaning management were integrated into providing system-based information to producers. Marston had an extensive Extension program which targeted beef producers and consumers on a national basis. Marston also spent a significant amount of time in the cooler collecting carcass data. “We would use ultrasound technology to determine harvest dates,” he said, “then quantify that information with the actual carcass data.”
“Red Angus has an extremely good product that fits many facets of the industry,” he continued. “Their maternal characteristics and environmental adaptability combined with consumer acceptance make Red Angus a very sought-after product.” Marston and his wife Mary have two grown children. Daughter Katie is a senior sensory scientist for ConAgra Foods in Omaha, Neb., and son Andee and his wife Robin live in Pikeville, Tenn., where Andee works for Burns Farm. Their son, Trig, is the Marstons’ first grandchild. In addition to enjoying their grandson, Marston enjoys a good game of golf and Mary is a culinary artist and works in continuing education.
“I’m excited to rekindle with people I’ve worked with in the industry over the years as well as establish new relationships within the Red Angus breed,” said Marston. “I have a strong desire of service toward the beef industry – from conception to consumption – and I look forward to helping Red Angus stakeholders recognize and expand on the opportunities for the breed.” n

Transfer purchases for the new owner’s benefit The Benefits of Transferring As we move forward into bull sale season, the hard work and time put into producing, developing and maintaining the quality of cattle offered is what helps keep the commercial bull buyer coming back to choose Red Angus. After the sale, complete the transfers and open the door to the benefits offered through RAAA.
Transfer Options 1) An Application for Transfer is on the back of the animal's Certificate of Registration. The following information will be needed for transfers: • Seller’s or authorized representative’s signature • Buyer’s name and address • Date of sale • If a female is bred, her breeding information • For multiple owners, the percentage owned by each owner • Send to the National Office to have the transfer completed
Many benefits can come with completing transfers. First and foremost, remember transfers that are submitted to the office within 60 days of the sale date will processed be at no charge.
Second, this removes the animal from your inventory. THR assessments are based off of the number of females (assessment age is 16 months) in your inventory; therefore it is important to keep your inventory up-todate with changes. Third, it gives the new owner a certificate of registration and a complementary subscription to the ARA Magazine for one year if the buyer is not already a member. Fourth, transferring the bull allows the new buyer to participate in RAAA’s Feeder Calf Certification Program or Allied Access program.
Finally, it eliminates fees when transfer applications are submitted at a later date.
2) Selling part interest in a bull requires a multiple-owner form (MOF) be completed. If a place for multiple owner info is included in the Application for Transfer, an MOF can be found on the website on the Registration page under ' Registration Forms.' 3) Transfers may also be submitted online through Member Data-REDS. To submit transfers this way, the seller must access their Member Data-REDS account online, go to ‘Transfers’ and enter the same information as above with a few final steps to complete – save information to proof, review the proof and submit to RAAA.
An easy way to access the member information is to use the ‘Data Searches and Tools’ located on the RAAA website. This allows sellers to verify the address and contact information of members to help make the transfer process easy and quick. If the Buyer is not a member of RAAA, we will create a buyer account for them when transfers are received. Note: buyer names and addresses may be submitted to the Member Services department for account numbers prior to submitting an application(s) for transfer. 4) Batch Transfer forms are available for members to transfer six animals per page. This is also available online under 'Registration Forms.'
5) One more option to complete transfers is the offering of a spreadsheet to make transferring animals easier than using the website for members that are transferring 50-plus head at a time. This makes it quicker due to the number of times you have to fill out the information. Keep in mind this method does not have checks and balances like the website. Calving season is full of sleepless nights and chaos. As it is upon
us, keep in mind an identification system that works best for your
operation. One option could be utilizing the international birth year
code. The letter to indicate 2014 is the letter ‘B.’ Other years can be found at redangus.org/registration. This can be used as a quick way to identify the age of your cattle just at a glance.

The Ranchers’ Guide to EPDs
Profitable. Simple. Sustainable. With the goal of simplifying ranchers’ profit equation, Red Angus continues blazing new trails in the pursuit of providing commercial producers with concise genetic predictions.
Based on the concept of Economically Relevant Traits (ERTs), producers are equipped with tools that allow for selection on traits that directly impact profitability. These tools simplify the selection process, and arm producers with the ability to better identify range bulls whose genetics will more positively impact profitability. Red Angus delivers technology in a producer-friendly package. Red Angus’ inclusion of genomic data into EPDs provides genetic predictions with unsurpassed dependability. Expressing these EPDs on a multi-breed base allows for simplified selection decisions regardless of desired breed composition. EPDs are the most reliable predictors of an animal’s true genetic merit. As the only major beef breed to mandate Total Herd Reporting (THR), Red Angus EPDs have the built-in advantage of being calculated from 15 years of complete contemporary group data. EPDs have “fast-tracked” beef cattle improvement and removed much of the guesswork associated with selecting range bulls.
EPDs: What, Why & How? EPDs predict differences in progeny performance, and are calculated from comparisons within Contemporary Groups. (A group of calves that were born in the same year, calving season, herd, and are of the same sex and were fed and managed alike.) EPDs have a clear advantage over less sophisticated predictors such as actual weights or within-herd ratios. Actual and adjusted weights are affected by environment, nutrition and management. Contemporary group ratios are an improvement, as they account for these environmental variables. However, they do not incorporate comparative performance data on related individuals in countless herds throughout the country. Red Angus EPDs account for these sources of variation in performance as well as mating bias (which cows were bred to which bulls). The power of these genetic predictions is multiplied by including every contemporary group from herds in the entire Red Angus breed.
Absolute performance is not predictable... Relative performance is. For Example: Suppose your old herd bull has a yearling weight EPD of 50. You buy a new bull with a yearling weight EPD of 70. How much will the new bull boost your calves’ yearling weights?
Compare EPDs across breeds. All animals in Red Angus and Simmental’s multi-breed database are described using the same language. That is, their EPDs are published on the same multi-breed base and scale. Selection for Growth (BW, WW, YW, Milk) and Carcass (MARB, YG, CW, REA, FAT) EPDs will be greatly simplified as commercial customers will be able to directly compare these EPDs across breeds, as well as registered hybrids/composite seedstock.
The Answer... We cannot predict how much performance will change from one year to the next because of varying environmental conditions (rainfall, temperature, available feedstuffs, etc). However, we do know this: the calves raised in the same contemporary group sired by your new bull will have the genetics to weigh an average of 20 pounds more at 365 days of age as compared to calves sired by the old bull.
Understanding ACCURACY
Red Angus EPDs are often presented with a corresponding accuracy value, which measures the strength of the relationship between the genetic prediction (EPD) and true genetic value. Accuracies are reported as a decimal number from zero to one. As accuracy value approaches 1.0, the EPD is "accurately" or closely estimating the true genetic merit of an animal for a given trait. Although low-accuracy EPDs are less reliable when compared to those of proven sires, independent research demonstrates EPDs to be the most meaningful indicator of animals’ true genetic merit. While "perfect" accuracies of 1.0, are never achieved, many heavily used Red Angus sires have accuracies greater than 0.9 (some as high as .99).

Rancher-Trusted EPDs. EPDs are only as good as the data used to calculate them. This fact led Red Angus to implement Total Herd Reporting (THR) over two decades ago, and Red Angus continues to be the only breed association to mandate THR for the collective Red Angus cowherd. In a nutshell, THR requires the annual production of every Red Angus cow and the performance of every calf raised through weaning to be reported. Only THR allows for the accurate calculation of fertility and longevity traits, which are the largest drivers in cowherd profitability. With THR, we know which daughters that were exposed to breeding delivered a calf. With THR, we can better predict which bulls’ daughters are able to bring a calf to the weaning pen year after year. Ranchers make more accurate selection decisions and ultimately more profit when they buy bulls whose EPDs are backed by THR.
Jump Starting Accuracy Red Angus’ strong foundation of THR data combines with genomic data from 50K tests to provide EPDs with unsurpassed reliability. The information gained from genomic data can be as informative as a bull’s first calf crop, or a cow’s lifetime production record. There’s nothing new to learn - this powerful combination of information will simply be delivered to producers in the form of higher accuracy EPDs. Recognizing the importance of heterosis to the success of the beef industry, Red Angus has partnered with the American Simmental Association by merging databases and calculating true multi-breed EPDs. This collaboration allows for the precise determination of heritable genetics and delivers that information to producers in the form of EPDs that can be directly compared, regardless of breed composition.
Cowherd - Building Profit starts at Reproduction!
Placing selection pressure on traits that will have a direct impact on your marketed product (weaned calves, yearlings, carcasses sold in the meat) can certainly increase your revenue on a per-calf basis. However, in order to achieve the higher goal of increased revenue per cow exposed, selection pressure must be placed on cowherd-building traits. Red Angus' commitment to Total Herd Reporting allows for the measurement of each female’s lifetime production history; from being exposed to breeding as a yearling, to measuring females’ productive lifespan. Implementing these tools into your selection decisions will have a long-term impact on your operation’s profitability.

Calving Ease Direct (CED) - predicts the probability of calves being born unassisted out of 2-year-old heifers. Producers want live calves - born unassisted. Selecting on actual birth weight is flawed; it is influenced by non-genetic factors such as nutrition and weather (ambient temperature). While BW EPD removes these non-genetic factors, Red Angus’ CED EPD is the best predictor of calving ease. The CED EPD includes variation in BW plus other influential genetic factors such as gestation length, calf shape, etc. Heifer Pregnancy (HPG) - predicts the probability of heifers conceiving to calve at two years of age. Many breeds offer genetic predictions of yearling bull scrotal circumference as an indicator of age of puberty. While puberty is a prerequisite, many factors influence pregnancy rate. Red Angus’ HPG EPD offers a tool which selects for what is economically relevant to ranchers - pregnant heifers. Calving Ease Maternal (CEM) - predicts the probability of a given animal's daughters calving unassisted at two years of age. Replacement heifers should be able to calve on their own. Red Angus' CEM EPD offers the industry's most reliable prediction to address that concern. It includes not only the predisposition for a female to calve unassisted, but also her contribution to her calf's traits (birth weight, calf shape, etc.) that make it more likely to be born unassisted. Maintenance Energy (ME) - predicts differences in daughters’ maintenance energy requirements and is expressed in Mcal/Month. Recognizing that 70% of cowherd feed costs are burned up in maintaining weight and condition, Red Angus’ ME EPD allows for the selection of bulls whose daughters will require less feed; thus, reducing cowherd expenses. Include selection pressure for ME EPD to ensure feed costs don’t get out of line when selection is made for greater performance and production.

Excel in Stayability... Excel in Profitability! Improving Stayability enhances cowherd profitability by increasing the percentage of females that deliver pounds and value to the weaning pen without extra labor or feed – and do it year after year.
Red Angus’ Stayability (STAY) EPD is a selection tool to improve overall cowherd efficiency through reducing replacement rate. Cows that stay productive, are problem free and last longer mean a larger percentage of heifers can be cash cropped, instead of developed as replacements. How is Stayability EPD Calculated? THR provides the foundation for a reliable Stayability EPD. Once a female enters the productive cowherd she is monitored annually for her productive ability. Only
Stayability (STAY) – predicts the probability of a bull’s daughters remaining productive until at least six years of age. Why six? That’s how long it takes a female to breakeven given all the expenses of development. Top 50%

females that produce a calf every year up until at least six years of age are given a positive observation. Females that miss a calf or are culled for any reason including soundness, production, disposition, body condition, etc. are given a negative observation. Mandatory collection of Stayability observations from all Red Angus herds provides ample data for the prediction of a bull’s ability to sire Ranch-Tested – Rancher-Trusted cowherds.

Birth Weight EPD (BW) predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight, and is also used in the calculation of Red Angus' Calving Ease Direct (CED) EPD. Weaning Weight EPD (WW) predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning. Yearling Weight EPD (YW) predicts the expected difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling. Milk EPD (MILK) predicts the difference in maternal production of an individual animal's daughters as expressed by the weaning weight of their calves. Total Maternal EPD (TM) predicts the rancher's actual observation of weaning weights of calves raised by an animal's daughters. TM includes the daughter’s milk EPD plus half of her genetic contribution to her calf's weaning weight EPD. The formula for TM EPD is: TM EPD = Milk EPD + 1/2 (WW EPD)
Bred-in Carcass Value... Red Angus is preferred among producers who retain ownership of their calf crop. -This demand is driven from consistent feedyard performance combined with reaping premiums from value-based grids. Furthering the mission of providing genetic predictions that directly impact producer profitability, Red Angus recently added Carcass Weight (CW) and Yield Grade (YG) to its arsenal of ERTs. Incorporation of these selection tools have the power to take your profitability to the next level. Marbling Score (MARB) - predicts differences for carcass marbling score as expressed in marbling score units. Higher marbling scores are positively correlated with higher carcass quality grades. Yield Grade (YG) - predicts differences in USDA Yield Grade score and is expressed in USDA Yield Grade units. YG EPD is calculated using the genetic predictions of CW, REA and FAT EPDs. The reliability of Red Angus’ YG EPD is enhanced by using both ultrasound and actual carcass data in the calculation of REA and FAT EPDs. Carcass W eight (CW) - predicts differences in hot carcass weight and is expressed in pounds. Because Red Angus’ CW EPD is a multi-trait model which includes birth, weaning and yearling weight data, the prediction is not subject to culling bias. Thus, it provides a more reliable EPD as compared to only using actual carcass weights. This computation allows for the use of weights taken on ~57,000 animals per year as compared to only ~1,500 animals per year with actual carcass weight observations. Increased Carcass Weight tends to detrimentally affect Yield Grade; the calculation of which also includes Rib Eye Area and Fat Thickness. Rib Eye Area (REA) predicts differences of carcass Rib Eye Area between the 12th and 13th rib. Increased Rib Eye Area has a beneficial effect on Yield Grade which also includes Carcass Weight and Fat Thickness. 12th Rib Fat Thickness (FAT) predicts differences for carcass fat depth over the 12th rib, as expressed in inches. Increases in fat thickness has a detrimental effect on Yield Grade.

Bull Selection Simplified. Building a cowherd?
■ Combine low-expense traits (ME EPD) with acceptable revenue traits to breed efficiency into the cowherd. ■ Improve fertility with selection pressure on HPG EPDs. ■ Sleep through the night by selecting high CEM EPDs.
■ Improve longevity and lower replacement rates by selecting higher-than-average STAY EPDs.
Breeding virgin heifers?

Selling calves or yearlings?
■ Heavier payweights may be achieved by selecting higher WW EPDs, but make sure heavier is what you want. Heavier weaning
weights mean heavier payweights for calf feds. However, for those who background their calves, too much weaning weight could translate into yearlings that are too heavy when they enter the feed yard, and finish too heavy. Overshooting performance goals can be just as detrimental as falling short.
■ Enhance your reputation - improve traits that impact feeder profits, such as carcass traits and post-weaning gain (YW).
Retaining Ownership?
■ Docile and fast starting, Red Angus are easy to start on feed and keep on feed.
■ Balance YW EPD of potential bulls with the existing cowherd to pinpoint needed improvement for post-weaning gains. ■ Increase payweight with selection for improved CW EPD.
Selling on a Grid?
■ Fine-tune marbling (MARB), rib eye area (REA) and back fat (FAT) EPDs to target value-based grids. ■ Target YG 1 & 2 premiums and avoid YG 4 discounts by applying selection pressure on YG EPD.
■ Optimize carcass weights to increase payweights while avoiding discounts for heavy weight carcasses.
■ Balance Carcass EPDs against existing cowherd genetics: • Cowherds of higher Continental influence may require additional selection pressure on MARB EPD to improve quality grade. • High-percentage British cowherds typically benefit from selection pressure to reduce YG and increase CW.

Twins. Reactions to this situation are often mixed in the beef industry. Two for the price of one, or is that truly the case? One thing producers should understand about twin calves is that preparation is key, beginning long before the calving season starts. Three decades of valuable information regarding multiple births in beef cattle was gathered from the Twinner herd at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC), Clay Center, Neb. Gordon Hays, cattle breeding specialist at USMARC, managed the center’s twinning herd until they dispersed it in 2011.
Hays said that ultrasound performed between 35 to 65 days after breeding can determine if multiple fetuses are present. From there, producers can make management decisions to better care for the cows that are carrying twins.
Whether a rancher considers twins a blessing or a curse, knowledge, preparation and management can reduce stress for both the cow and the producer.
Dr. Jill Colloton, owner of Bovine Services, LLC, Edgar, Wis., said that after 90 days the fetuses are often too far over the pelvic brim to reach with ultrasound so producers should schedule the ultrasound accordingly.
Care Required “Twin pregnancies have a higher risk of loss throughout gestation,” Colloton said, “especially if both fetuses are in the same uterine horn.”
USMARC Twinning Herd Background The USMARC created the Twinner herd to research multiple births in cattle in 1976 with research beginning fully in 1981 in order to explore the potential for increasing the output of calves relative to nutrient inputs for cow maintenance. Females that had previously produced multiple sets of twins were chosen for the herd, with no breed requirements. Increasing the frequency of multiple births within the herd was one of the main objectives. The research team was very successful at increasing the occurrence of twins and triplets. When the research herd was dispersed starting in 2011, multiple births occurred 50 per-

Cows carrying twins should be monitored closely for abortion and rechecked mid-gestation if possible, she said. During the last trimester, the cows at USMARC that were expecting multiple births were separated from the rest of the herd. They received a higher density, higher energy ration during the last trimester and postcalving.
Feeding supplemental concentrates to cows carrying twins can be helpful during the last trimester. This is because the cows will need more energy intake but have less room in their rumens for large volumes of feed according to Colloton. Hays also encouraged producers to increase observation time during calving. The research herd was treated just like many cattlemen treat first-calf heifers. “We were much more likely to assist with multiple births,” Hays said. “Around 40 percent of the births of

Thallman explained that the center was able to increase the rate of multiple births by studying the ovulation rates of the females within the herd. By selecting the heifers that had released multiple eggs during an estrus cycle, they in turn were able to increase the occurrence of multiple births from those multiple ovulations. Studying the ovulation rate with the aide of ultrasound gave them the opportunity to examine many ovulations without having to wait for a confirmed multiple birth pregnancy.

Hays pointed out that raising twins is fairly labor intensive in most situations. Cows have unique feed requirements and are more likely to calve earlier than the rest of the herd and that can catch producers off guard. “Cows carrying twins often calve 10 to 14 days earlier,” Colloton said. “Producers should monitor cows with twins closely beginning at least two weeks before the due date.”
Other post-calving difficulties include retained placenta. As gestation shortens, the occurrence of retained placenta goes up, Hays said. The USMARC research herd had good success with cows claiming their calves. Cows were penned in a small area to make sure they claimed

“Bonding took very well,” Hays said. “It was necessary to make sure that

Carrying twins puts more stress on the cow compared to a single birth. Postpartum interval is often longer and conception rates were lower due to that added stress, said Hays.

Mark Thallman, Research Geneticist with USMARC, estimates twins to occur 1 to 2 percent of the time in British-influenced cows. Continental breeds developed as dual purpose (dairy and beef) have a slightly higher (3 to 4 percent) incidence of twins.
At those rates, seeing multiple sets of twins from the same cow would be uncommon, Thallman said. Of the cattle who carry twins, the majority of those are fraternal twins originating from two separate eggs. Only one-fourth of one percent are identical twins, Thallman said.

dam recognize the scent from its biological calf and thus trick her into claiming the foster calf.
Ranchers have also had success with a product called ‘O-No-More,’ previously named ‘Orphan-No-More,’ that aids in the calf adoption by natural or foster cows. When the powder is applied to the calf, the cow recognizes the smell and claims it. Hays was quick to say that no method is foolproof. Producers may have their own techniques and should use what method works best for each situation.

And while it may not always be in the best interest for either the cow or both twins to stay together, an extra calf can come in handy if another cow loses her calf.
Opinions aside, proactive management and preparation can turn a twin curse into a double blessing. n
Most folks know that a freemartin is a heifer, born twin to a bull and, as a result of the two fetuses sharing a common blood supply, the heifer is abnormally developed sexually. “We generally find about 90 percent of those heifers to be sterile,” said Eldon Cole, Extension livestock specialist, University of Missouri. Veterinarians say this is not uncommon to find a heifer that’s a freemartin. The owner sometimes will check his records and say, “Yes, there was a twin bull with her.” Sometimes they’ll say, “No, she was a single.”

Well, apparently, the single heifer did have a brother early in gestation that affected her sexual development. The next question is usually, “Why do they call them freemartins?” said Cole. “I’d never heard an explanation until I read one in a magazine recently.” “The story is that in the mid1600s, European farmers would donate the sterile heifers to the annual Saint Martin celebration. Because the heifers’ value was minimal, the ‘free’ heifers became known as ‘freemartins.’”

Working and feeding facilities are critical components of any livestock operation, whether it’s home to 20 head of livestock in the southeast, 300 head in the northwest or 10,000 feeder calves in the Midwest. This winter may be a good time to begin thinking about your operation and how modifications or changes in maintenance can improve its environmental compliance or reduce stress for livestock. Large-scale operators, like JBS Five Rivers Cattle Feeding, have invested heavily in environmental systems. “It’s the right thing to do for the environment and it’s the right thing to do from an animal-care and wellbeing standpoint,” said Tom McDonald, vice president of environmental affairs for Five Rivers, which has a combined feeing capacity of more than 980,000 head of cattle across six states.
McDonald said a challenge in any feedyard, regardless of size, is managing pen moisture. “When there is too much moisture, cattle waste energy just moving around the pen,” he explained. “If there is too little moisture, dust is an issue.”

In McDonald’s view, pen maintenance should take a high priority in any operation. “Priorities should be to remove excess manure, fill holes and keep the pen surface groomed to allow excess moisture to leave the pen,” he explained. McDonald also suggested that water trough overflows be plumbed outside of the pen to reduce mud inside the pen.
Ben Weinheimer, vice president of the Texas Cattle Feeders Association (TCFA), agreed that pen maintenance goes a long way to improving environmental compliance and reducing stress for livestock. TCFA members collectively feed more than 6 million head of cattle every year, which amounts to nearly one-third of the U.S. fed beef supply.

Slope According to Ressler, a 3 to 4 percent slope in a feeding pen helps it drain and therefore stay dry – a definite plus for the environment and for cattle alike. Moving around in a wet pen requires more energy for the animals – energy that would otherwise be put into feed conversion. “Keeping cattle dry helps them focus on their primary job – converting pounds of forage and feed into pounds of beef,� he said.
“Our members focus on providing cattle with a place that is comfortable year-round to produce beef in the most efficient manner possible,� he said. According to Weinheimer, proper pen maintenance should promote drainage during rain events to minimize wet and muddy conditions.
Scott Ressler, environmental services director for the North Dakota Stockmen’s Association has helped more than 200 medium-to-small-scale feed yards across the state assess and enhance their environmental compliance over the past 12 years. He said many of the improvements that enhance the environment also benefit livestock by reducing their stress in a feeding system. “Ranchers who are looking to improve the design of their facilities should consider the current slope of their pens, available windbreak as well as the water and gate placement

In addition to helping the pen dry quickly, adequate slope also minimizes odor production, according to McDonald. It’s difficult at best to improve slope in an existing pen, but according to Ressler, improvements can be made simply by moving wooden or tire feeders into a bunkline along one side of the pen. Low-stress pen design increases well-being and efficiency opportunity to develop a slope from that point to the back of the pen.
“Depending on how much slope exists in the pens, some feedyards will construct mounds in the middle of the pen to help provide a dry place for cattle to lie down,” said Weinheimer. The mounds also produce some natural heat through passive composting and the mounds also help to promote drainage from the pen. (Runoff from the pen surfaces is captured in retention ponds that are approved by the permitting agencies.)
Windbreak, bedding and shade Particularly in northern climates, windbreak and bedding play an important role in reducing cattle stress during the winter. Whether manmade or natural, protection from the wind is beneficial for livestock and bedding helps them maintain body temperatures.
In Weinheimer’s area, which includes portions of Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico, a prevailing southwest wind in summer offers comfort for cattle by cooling them, especially in the overnight hours. “In areas of south Texas, where humidity is higher, many feedyards maintain shades over parts of their pens to help mitigate heat on cattle,” he said. Space Ressler also recommends planning for adequate pen space – approximately 200 to 300 square feet per animal, depending on the size and class of cattle. “Smaller feeder calves will do fine with 200 square feet, while adult cows or bulls do better with 300 square feet or more per animal,” he explained and added that it is also important to plan for adequate bunk space – about 18 inches per head of bunk space. This amount of space gives both the timid animals and their more assertive counterparts adequate room at the table.

Gates “There are few things more frustrating than attempting to move a fresh set of feeder calves out of a 90-degree gate that they can’t see,” Ressler said and added that angling the gate at 45 degrees helps calves see the opening a lot better. Some of the systems Resssler has helped design place gates near the feedline, while others have gates toward the back. Either way is fine, it’s simply a matter of preference for the producer.
Waterers There are also two schools of thought about water placement in small feedyards – either near the front of the pen so the cattle don’t have to expend extra energy to travel to water or, toward the back of the pen so their mouths are cleaner when they take a drink. “My experience is that their habits aren’t very good, no matter where the waterer is located,” Ressler noted.
Low-stress pen design increases well-being and efficiency Heavy-use pads Heavy-use pads are also beneficial particularly in the spring of the year when the snow melts. The pads tend to keep the cattle up on the dry portions of the pen, which also helps facilitate drainage.
Pen surface moisture should be about 25 percent moisture to minimize dust production.
Equipment Larger feedyards tend to have more heavy equipment on-site to manage manure and pen surfaces. According to Weinheimer, those pieces of equipment are important all year-long, as they are used to prepare pens for winter or groom and maintain pen surfaces in the spring in preparation for thunderstorms.
Management While moisture and mud can be a significant challenge, at the other end of the spectrum is dust. Loose, uncompact manure can be stirred by active cattle hooves as cool evening temperatures give cattle relief from a
hot summer day. According to McDonald, “Dust can be minimized by keeping the loose, uncompact manure to less than a 1-inch depth and adding supplemental moisture to the pen surface.” He recommended that pen surface moisture should be about 25 percent moisture to minimize dust production. Loose manure can be collected with a small tractor and box scraper and piled either inside or outside of the pen. “Removing manure from the pen is best, but it is not always possible. Supplemental moisture can be added
to the pens with solid-set irrigation systems or water trucks,” noted McDonald.
“Pens that prevent the cattle from exerting extra energy benefit cattle performance,” Ressler said and added that this is why some ranchers opt to place their watering systems close to the bunkline – so cattle can easily access water without expending extra energy needed to walk to the back of the pen. Although a majority of the feedyards Ressler has developed are for back grounding or finishing purposes, he said the same principles are also important for seedstock producers who are looking to upgrade their facilities. “With high feed costs, we want cattle to be as efficient as possible and to develop at a reduced cost. That’s money in the bank, no matter what stage of production you’re in,” he said. ■

“Immediately you feel violated – it’s as violated as you’re ever going to be. Then the longer you think about it, the madder you get. It’s pure frustration.”
These were Jim Pipkin’s initial emotions after learning his family’s purebred beef cattle operation near Springfield, Mo., had fallen victim to cattle theft.
On a June night in 2013, cattle rustlers pulled into one of the Pipkin’s pastures and stole three 18-month-old bulls and four bred heifers. The thieves cut through a five-strand barbed wire fence and the offset hot-wires on each side. A nearby shed held portable panels which the thieves used for a makeshift corral. “They had to know where they were going because they crossed a ditch at the only crossing point,” Pipkin said. “They knew what they were doing.” As of January 2014, only one suspect had been obtained, but Pipkin claims authorities have only caught one of many involved. The amount of manpower it took to pull off the theft in the middle of the night was more than a single person could handle.

The age-old “cattle” crime
The Pipkin’s are not alone. Type “cattle theft” into Google and list after list of ranching nightmare stories appear – some tell of justice and some leave unanswered questions. As cattle prices have been hitting record highs, so have cattle theft numbers in certain states. As of October 2013, Oklahoma had a record of 835 cases of cattle rustling reported – a 16 percent increase in cattle thefts this year compared to the first 10 months of 2012. These types of statistics have driven state cattle associations to push for harsher cattle theft penalties. According to the Missouri Cattlemen’s Association (MCA) Executive Vice President Mike Deering, the crack down has helped. “The increase has tapered off,” said Deering. “In Missouri legislature this year we toughened some of the penalties substantially for cattle rustling which has helped significantly.” Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association Special Ranger Bart Perrier claims cattle theft hasn’t increased, but awareness has. Last year, Perrier worked 30 cases of cattle theft in his central Oklahoma district. Incidents that ranchers may have initially thought were cattle death or fence-hopping related, are increasingly being investigated as crime. “Cattle theft is a unique crime,” Perrier stated. “Anybody can rob a house or commit murder, but not just anybody can steal cattle. I have yet to meet a cattle thief that wasn’t a cowboy.”
While it may be unsettling, Perrier claimed the majority of suspects know their victims; whether it be a neighbor, current or ex-employee.
“A lot of times we’ll work embezzlements on ranches where the suspect works for the ranch. They’ll take a few head here and there thinking they won’t get caught.”

“There is no honor among thieves.” – American Proverb There are ways for producers to hinder thieves. Perrier suggest ranchers lock gates and keep a regular count on their cattle and, if they suspect something is missing, to call law enforcement immediately and not take matters into their own hands.
“Locks are not going to keep people out, but it gives physical evidence to support a crime was committed,” explained Perrier. “Time is of the essence and if the lock on your gate is cut and you’re missing cattle, you won’t wait three weeks to report it.” Maintaining communication is something Pipkin, Deering and Perrier all suggest. Within the last two years, every one of Pipkin’s neighbors has fallen victim to theft – including an incident where 42 of his neighbor’s calves were sorted off and trucked away one night.
“If you see something that isn’t quite right, call somebody about it. You don’t have to be a nosey neighbor, but we all need to look out for one another,” Pipkin said. His southwestern Missouri area has been hit so hard that he and his neighbors will even take turns on night checks. Other suggestions include avoid feeding in penned areas, keep from building corrals close the road and avoid setting a schedule. “Don’t make it a routine to be in the same spot at the same time everyday. I know it makes it difficult to get chores done, but if they don’t have any idea of when you’re going to be in a certain location, they aren’t going to be as comfortable,” added Pipkin, something Perrier also agrees on.
As far as Perrier is concerned, the biggest way ranchers can protect their livestock is to have several forms of identification on cattle — especially a brand. When Perrier is tracking down stolen cattle at sale barns, the surest and quickest way to prove cattle belong to a

While each state handles giving restitution to victims differently, it is easy for victims to not be fully reimbursed for their losses. In Pipkin’s case, the cattle were never recovered. His insurance covered salvage cost, but it was significantly less than what the cattle were worth. In some states, a court may decide the convicted cattle thief has to pay the victim back for losses over a certain period of time. “A problem we run into is the value of the cattle. While the cows may be worth significantly more if sold elsewhere on a different date, they are only worth what they brought that day, at that sale,” explained Perrier. “Unfortunately sometimes the victim falls short.”
Because of this, the special ranger would like to see set penalties for theft.
“I would love to see states implement stickier penalties for agriculture and livestock because every rancher works his tail off year-round just to make ends meet. If someone steals six to eight head of cattle, it really is a financial burden,” concluded Perrier. ■

New Years Resolutions. Most people make them with good intentions, and then life happens. Goal setting and follow-through is a discipline and a commitment. It’s February; how are you resolutions faring?
We often work with business owners helping them identify and execute business and personal wealth objectives. The truth is most people know what they need to do, but the issue is execution. Daily life consumes us, fires need attention, and our “big picture” priorities take a back seat, keeping us “stuck.”
Getting “Unstuck” One of the best ways to create goals that are likely to stick is to begin with a narrative description of what the goal looks like once it’s accomplished. Write your ideas about the future from the standpoint that you’re already there – you’ve already accomplished whatever it is. A one- to three-year perspective is typically an appropriate time range to “look” into the future. Now think to yourself; how do I feel? What does it look like? Why is it important to me? Who does it include? Your written vision should include your business, personal and financial goals. When you write it, don’t worry about how you’re going to accomplish these things. Simply write what you want to accomplish.
Now Comes the “How” You’ve seen the future and you’ve written it down. It’s time to perform an old fashioned SWOT analysis; (S) Strengths, (W) Weaknesses, (O) Opportunities, (T) Threats. Write down ideas in each category that
pertain to your vision under the preceding areas. What are the opportunities ahead and what are your strengths? What do you see as weaknesses that you should plan for and work to mitigate, and what potential threats exist that may hinder you accomplishing your goals?
From these ideas, you’ll have the beginning of some key strategies you should consider working on. Ask yourself when you analyze each strategy; 1. Does this help me get closer to my goal? 2. What tactics will be required of me to execute this strategy? 3. What will be the return on investment of this effort? Does that make sense? 4. What resources are needed to accomplish this and how will they be available to me? 5. What will I not compromise to accomplish this goal? What are my boundaries? 6. Are my goals SMART? Shared, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-based The Next Step – Creating Tactics Now that you’ve identified your strategies, it’s time to determine the specific tactics that will help you cross the finish line. As an example, if one of your business operation strategies is to grow profits by 10%, specific tactics may include reducing overhead, improving the gross
margin per unit, or a well-managed grazing plan. That “tactic” becomes a project that should have a concise design illustrating specific details explaining how it will be accomplished and its impact to the bottom line. If you have a family ranch and you’re building strategies and tactics by consensus, consider the “General Electric” method of selecting priority tactics. If you ultimately end up with 12 great ideas, divide the number of family members by ideas. If you have four family members, they each get three votes (12 ideas, divided by four family members = 3 votes each). They can use all of their votes on one project, or spread them out. This will help pull out the best ideas, which can then be further vetted against the SMART principle. Delivery I’m a believer that typically people can focus on three to five new things well. Trying to take on several new tasks or habits may lead to a lack of focused management resulting in a lack of execution. It’s better to do a few things well with great results, than more things poorly. Review your goals annually, and seek out the guidance of professionals and mentors when necessary. JRA Members Boost Your Genetic Potential by Dawn Bernhard, Junior Programs Coordinator
Juniors have two excellent opportunities within the JRA to enhance their genetic potential for learning! JRA/RAAA Scholarship Program In 2014, the JRA granted four $1,000 scholarships to use toward higher education. Any JRA member who is a high school senior, college freshman or college sophomore is eligible to apply for a scholarship. Scholarships may be awarded to the same individual more than once. The applications are available online at redangus.org/jra/programs/scholarships. The applications are thorough and include a requirement for three letters of reference, so now is the time to work at completion of the application and to request reference letters.
All scholarship application materials must be received by Monday, March 31. Completed applications, photos and letters of reference may be mailed or e-mailed to Charli Crawford, charli@redangus.org. No late applications are accepted. JRA Intern Placement Program Experience is the best teacher. Juniors, expand your genetic potential for learning, network with Red
Angus breeders and industry businesses, experience travel, new parts of the country and new management ideas through the Intern Placement Program. With the updated program, searching for your intern location is a snap at redangus.org/jra/programs/internplacement! Use these three easy steps to begin your intern quest: 1. Review the list of breeders and industry partners who are interested in hosting an intern.
2. Directly contact any operations on the potential intern hosts list in which you have an interest in working as an intern. Phone and/or personal interviews are encouraged; discussions on compensation, housing, transportation, insurance, expectations from each party, date of beginning and ending internship, days off etc. are between the employer and employee. JRA or RAAA has no role in negotiating actual work experience details. 3. Provide any information requested by the potential host.

Through this JRA program, recent interns have worked in South Dakota, Montana, Iowa and Nebraska. Potential locations currently on the host list include Kansas, Maryland, Montana, South Dakota, Tennessee and Texas. Red Angus operations around the country as well as related industries such as Genex and Midland Bull Test offer internships.
Some Red Angus breeders and industry locations have expressed their preference to host interns during the fall or spring to provide the most diverse learning environment and exposure to a larger variety of experiences. So, even if a junior is not seeking an internship for college, consideration for interning in the fall or spring may prove valuable and may enhance securing an internship. The Junior Programs Coordinator, Dawn Bernhard, welcomes your inquiries on an internship and may be able to assist juniors with locating a particular internship based on location or experience requests. The high-selling open registered heifers were Lots 238, 245 and 256 – all at $2,500. Lot 238 is a Beckton Halfmann Hustler R588 daughter out of the legendary Rambo 502 cow, Panhandle Robin 4135. She sold to Horsley Red Angus of Council Hill, Okla.

Spring EPDs assist producers with bull-buying decisions Red Angus Association of America releases new EPDs As the busy bull-buying season approaches, Red Angus stakeholders are now armed with updated selection tools to assist them in bull battery purchases to enhance their own herds’ genetics for longterm productivity and profitability.
The Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) recently released the 2014 Spring EPDs that evaluate traits from calving ease to performance to carcass merit. The suite of numbers includes tools to select cattle with optimum economic relevance such as stayability, heifer pregnancy and maintenance energy requirements. The Red Angus breed has been dedicated to Total Herd Reporting (THR) for two decades, creating an
accurate database of Red Angus genetics and subsequently, EPDs trusted by ranchers. EPDs are displayed with their in-breed ranking percentile to assist cattle producers with their trait selection decisions. “With THR data, we are provided with comparisons between all animals in each contemporary group,” said Larry Keenan, RAAA director of breed improvement. “Since EPDs rely on measured variation within a contemporary group, THR provides for reliable EPDs and faster gains in EPD accuracy by ensuring that the variation in the performance of each calf is counted.” Red Angus’ strong foundation of THR data combined with genomic

data from 50K tests provides EPDs with unsurpassed reliability. The information from the genomic data can be as informative as a bull’s first calf crop or a cow’s lifetime production record. And, since the genomic data is incorporated directly into the EPDs, cattle producers don’t have to learn how to interpret new data. In Memory... Robert “Bob� Baker
Robert “Bob� Baker of Sisters, Ore., died Dec. 7, 2013, after a brief illness. Bob and his wife Gayle have raised Red Angus cattle at the Rimrock Ranch in Sisters since 1998. Originally from Duncanville, Texas, Bob moved to Alaska in 1969 where he practiced law until retiring to Sisters in 2001. He had purchased the Sisters property in 1988 with the dream of eventually settling there. In 1998, he and his wife Gayle took the first step by purchasing a small herd of Red Angus from Doug and Betty Dunn of Double Eagle Ranch in Terrebonne, Ore. With the Dunns’ early support and guidance, the Bakers developed a productive cow-calf operation at the Rimrock. Together with the Dunns they invested in breeding bulls and jointly leased summer pasture. The Bakers were cooperators with Leachmans in Montana for several years and are currently with Ryan and Park Ludvigson, Ludvigson Stock Farms, also of Montana.
Bob enjoyed the camaraderie and friendliness of fellow cattlemen. A highlight each year was socializing with other Red Angus breeders and consigning a heifer to the Bet On Red Sale in Reno, Nev.
Leo Scott named Farmer of the Year
Leo Scott of Ferrum, Va., has been named Franklin County’s Farmer of the Year for 2013. Scott own KC Farms and raises Red Angus cattle.
For 37 years, he owned and operated Scott Cabinets in Ferrum, developing an interest in cattle during this time. In 1983, Scott purchased 10 registered Red Angus cattle and KC Farms was created.
Scott has one full-time employee, Allen Hodges, and one part-time worker, James Woods. Chase Scott, his grandson, helps on weekends, and his granddaughter, Kellie and her husband Brandon Utley, keep a web page for Scott.
Scott’s wife, Geraldine, is co-owner of the business and manages the bookkeeping. Scott said he is proud of this farm but prouder still of his two grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Scott said he is very humbled by the honor. The Farmer of the Year is named annually by the Franklin County Retail Merchants Association.
