Sound science enhances genetic prediction The RAAA Strategic Plan Core Policies are the blueprint that guides the Red Angus Association of America’s (RAAA) leadership towards the breed’s common goal – to assist stakeholders in financial success through the use of Red Angus genetics.
In fact, it is so important that six of the nine core policies reflect this dedication to our stakeholders’ financial success through advanced technology, genetic prediction and improved performance. (redangus.org/association/core-policies) The RAAA has always provided superior seedstock for commercial producers. And the Association strives to provide the best – and most practical – tools for our customers’ use in genetic selection.
What is the best tool to use in genetic selection for the highest reliability of future performance indicators? EPDs are still the best tool for aiding our choices in advancing the genetics for our herds.
As the first major beef breed to mandate Total Herd Reporting (THR), Red Angus EPDs have the built-in advantage of being calculated from two decades of complete contemporary group data. This complete data increases the accuracy of Red Angus EPDs, giving bull buyers more confidence in the data they use when making genetic selections. In addition, our multi-breed database allows for the direct comparison of genetic merit between Red Angus, Simmental and Gelbvieh. The common database includes over 12 million head making EPDs more reliable and useful tools.
Beyond THR and the common database, sound science has proven we can further increase EPD accuracy by incorporating
6 American Red Angus Magazine ■ January 2014
genomic 50K DNA data. Red Angus breeders may choose either the RA50K or Zoetis PF50K profile tests to increase EPD accuracies of young cattle. With the incorporation of a 50K genomic test, a yearling bull’s EPD accuracies can increase to a level equivalent to having data incorporated from one calf crop. A 50K test increases a female’s EPD accuracies to that of her lifetime production. This information allows commercial producers to make their selection decisions based on more accurate predictions in genetic merit allowing them to achieve their genetic goals at a faster rate.
Be assured that the RAAA will continue to make genetic predictions more precise and reliable through sound science. Our staff does an outstanding job of serving as industry leaders and keeping the latest and most accurate prediction tools available to our producers and customers.
The spring bull-buying season is almost here. Red Angus EPDs backed by sound science increase the commercial bull buyer’s ability to make more informed genetic purchases and increase profit margins. Purchasing a herd bull suited for your cowherd and your production goals is the fastest way to make genetic enhancements in your herd. The singling out process must include looking for those traits that are economically important and/or traits you want to change. Evaluating your own herd records will assist you in selecting a bull that will improve your genetic base. Please visit the “Genetics” page at redangus.org for complete information on genetic evaluation tools, the EPD common base and 50K DNA profiling. If you have limited Internet access, call or write and we will send this information to you by mail. ■

the sale, most producers also use the catalog to educate their customers about their operation. Red Angus encourages producers to take their educational efforts one step further – educate customers on the profit-enhancing tools Red Angus has to offer. To facilitate this effort, sale catalog inserts have been developed which educate customers on specific subjects. For example, Red Angus currently offers single-page sale catalog inserts that cover EPDs, bull selection and marketing programs.
Sale Terms and Conditions The first step in a successful transaction is getting both the seller and buyer on the same page regarding the terms of the sale. Recognizing most members would rather spend their time marketing animals as opposed to spending countless hours dreaming up various scenarios that they should cover in their sale terms, RAAA has done the work already by developing a set of Sale Terms and Conditions. Members are not required to use these conditions, rather they are simply provided as a service of RAAA. Members can elect to use these suggested terms, modify certain points in the suggested terms or not use any terms. The most important step is to include which terms govern the sale of the cattle. To learn more about these services visit the “Sale Planner” page of the Red Angus website at redangus.org/marketing/saleplanner. For those members without internet access, simply call the RAAA National Office at 940-387-3502. ■

Sale Catalog Data Extract (SCDE) For most producers, the single-most timeconsuming job in conducting their production sale is compiling all of the information on sale animals and then presenting that information in a commercial-producer friendly way. To eliminate the vast majority of this step, Red Angus has developed the Sale Catalog Data Extract (SCDE) service. Members who choose to utilize this service simply send a list of RAAA registration numbers to scde@redangus.org. Within three business days, the member will receive a complete extract of data on those animals in a .csv text file, which can be opened in all data managing software programs. In addition, members can elect to also receive their data presented in one of two RAAA-approved templates, which are formatted to a standard sale catalog layout.

Recognizing the ever-increasing demands required to prepare for production sales, Red Angus has developed and implemented several tools to assist producers in developing production sale catalogs. Producers who utilize these tools are able to be more efficient in their marketing activities, and the added benefit of all producers spreading the Red Angus message through a consistent presentation has longterm advantages. Below is a review of the production sale marketing tools Red Angus has to offer.

Member Services Bulletin Total Herd Reporting
An important cornerstone that has helped grow the Red Angus breed is Total Herd Reporting (THR).
THR is a system designed to work for the stakeholder, not against. The foundation is to report performance data on every female and have every calf recorded, whether the stakeholder desires to register the calf or not. The essential reason to report all females verse a select few eliminates the bias selection towards elite animals. In the long run, this will give the opportunity for the elite animals to excel and the inferior animals to be evaluated closer. The RAAA is based around the Total Herd Reporting schedule. The requirements in participating in THR are: • Report breeding herd inventory • Billing is based off herd inventory • Submit production and performance data • Report heifer exposure data/inventory The time to report depends on the stakeholder’s calving season (spring or fall). The spring calving season starts January 1 and fall calving season starts June 1. As the New Year has arrived, keep in mind the Total Herd Reporting Annual Schedule.
The time is here to update your spring herd inventory available online via Member Data-REDS and report Fall 2013 calving data through weaning. As a reminder from Member Services keep in mind the deadlines that are associated with each report.
The fees associated with THR are on a per-cow-base verses per calf. THR encourages the transfer of all animals sold without fee, provided they are submitted within 60 days of the date of sale, otherwise late fees will be incurred. RAAA also allows the billing of THR to be paid over five monthly installments helping stakeholders to manage cash flow of their operation. Participation in this program has allowed the Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) such as Heifer Pregnancy and Stayability to become valuable information for stakeholders.
EPDs are the most reliable predictors of an animal’s true genetic merit. As the only major beef breed to mandate THR, Red Angus EPDs have the built-in advantage of nearly two decades of complete contemporary group data. As we continue to ask more from our
cattle due to competitive prices for feed resources and strong global beef demand, the only way to perform better is to measure more of our animals. Overall, Total Herd Reporting allows the opportunity for stakeholder herds to be managed tighter than the competing breeds, giving Red Angus the advantage. Therefore, it is also important to report data that does contribute to – but is not a requirement of – THR. (i.e. collection of calving ease scores, body condition scores, udder scores and cow weights).
SUBMIT Carcass Data
The combination of reduced carcass and ultrasound data submission has the potential to significantly reduce the reliability of RAAA carcass EPDs. While ultrasound data is useful in estimating animals’ genetic merit, one must realize that ultrasound is an indicator trait for the true Economically Relevant Trait – the actual carcass on the rail.
RAAA has employed a carcass data incentive program to place emphasis on quality of data as well as collection of additional data points to increase the amount of carcass data submitted for use in genetic evaluations.
For more information about this program, please contact Myron Edelman, Myron@redangus.org, or Larry Keenan, larry@redangus.org. 14 American Red Angus Magazine ■ January 2014

The Bull Buyers’ Crystal Ball by Tracey Koester, ARA Magazine Editorial Coordinator
The day is here. You’ve done your homework and poured over the data, pedigrees, footnotes and pictures in the catalog. You’ve marked your favorites. Now, anticipation sparks the air as you head to the bull pens to evaluate their phenotype and make your final decisions. This is bull sale season – a season not recognized by meteorologists but instead by ranchers preparing for the next breeding season and the next calf crop. Young or old, man or woman, rookie or seasoned veteran, each bull buyer enlists his or her own process to analyzing data, confirmation and bloodlines, and to find the best bull to fit their cowherd, environment and checkbook.
A crystal-ball look into the future would certainly help in a bull buyer’s decision on which bull to purchase. What will his calves look like? Will they come easy at calving time? Will they hit the ground growing? Will they weigh up at weaning? Will his daughters milk and be an asset to my herd? EPDs are the closest tool cattle producers have to the proverbial crystal ball, allowing them to look into the

future with more than just a guess at how a bull’s offspring will perform. Coupled with the latest technology of 50K genotyping and Red Angus’ unique Total Herd Reporting, Red Angus EPDs are the industry’s most reliable and accurate “crystal ball” tool. Each cattle producer needs to evaluate his or her individual situation and criteria when it comes time to select a bull.

Know Your Program Before you can select your bull, it’s important to appraise your cowherd, program and environment to determine what type of bull you need.
Brothers Mike and Silas Skinner, along with their father, Bob, own the Skinner Ranch of Jordan Valley, Ore., and know that it takes a hardy bull to survive in their environment. Mike Skinner said the conditions of the high desert range from frigid cold winters – 30 degrees Fahrenheit below zero – to extremely hot and dry summers with an annual precipitation of only 10 to 13 inches.
“Our bulls absolutely have to hold up in the high desert,” said Skinner. “They need to travel a long ways to water through sagebrush and rocky soil, so they really need to be good footed and physically sound. A sore-footed bull laying in the shade isn’t doing his job.”

C.J. Blew
C.J. Blew of Hutchinson, Kan., uses Red Angus bulls on his first- and second-calf females. “I want my cowherd to be straight Red Angus,” said Blew, who selects all of his replacement heifers from these age groups. He then breeds his mature cows to SimAngus™ bulls for added performance.
“You just can’t beat that Red Angus cow,” said Blew. “I like her longevity, maternal traits and moderate size.”

The Bull Buyers’ Crystal Ball
Therefore, maternal genetics take top billing in Blew’s selection criteria for Red Angus bulls. “They will sire my next generation of replacement females so they need to be strong in Stayability, Heifer Pregnancy and Maintenance Energy EPDs.” Analyze the Data During bull sale season, a rancher’s mailbox overflows with sale catalogs and livestock promotional pieces full of numbers and pedigrees. But even in this era of information overload, both Skinner and Blew say they use all the data available to assist in making their decisions. “It’s one of my pet peeves,” said Blew, “when a sale catalog doesn’t list all the EPDs and I have to go to the extra work to look up animals online. It frustrates me and I might decide to shop elsewhere if I have to do a lot of extra work to find the information I want.”
Ideally, both ranchers like to get their hands on a spreadsheet and sort the bull offering according to their individual bull requirements. “I make my initial selections based on genotype,” said Blew. However, after he narrows down the field on paper, he said, “Every bull will have to suit me phenotypically with good feet, muscle and the definition of shape that I want my cattle to have.”

Skinner said they use a process of elimination. “We go through each category of traits and rank the bulls we like,” he said. “Maternal traits are very important to us. It costs too much to lose a cow in her second or third year of production.” They also require good growth in their cattle but finding bulls that excel in both maternal and growth traits can be challenging, as those characteristics are usually antagonistic. Skinners use the EPD percentile ranking to select bulls that stay above average in these traits. If they want to place more emphasis in a trait area, they will tighten their criteria to the top 20 percentile. “We always try to stay with a mid-range Milk EPD because of our environment,” said Skinner. “If we get too much milk in our cows, it’s hard to get them to breed

back. But if we don’t have enough, it obviously affects our weaning performance.”
In addition to maternal traits, Blew also pays close attention to carcass merit. “I will get good yield when I breed my Red Angus cows to SimAngus™ bulls, so I want to concentrate on keeping the marbling high in my cowherd.” Whether he retains ownership or backgrounds his calves to a feeder weight and sells in the country, he knows they must meet expectations at every level. Financial Factors The checkbook also factors in to bull-buying decisions. Skinners determine an annual budget based on their bull needs. “We buy a semi-load of bulls each year, and it’s easy to spend too much if we don’t plan a budget and stick to it.”
Blew spreads out the cost of his herd sires by collecting his top bulls and AIing his heifers and first-calvers before turning out the bulls. They are looking at doing the same with their mature cowherd. “When the cost of feeder cattle went up, so did the price of bulls,” said Blew. “It’s going to cost a little more to get the bulls I want, so I need to find a way to get more value out of them.” He also uses half-brothers in multiple sire breeding groups to keep track of bloodlines and improve consistency in his calf crop. “We identify the calves by their grandsire so we can keep track of bloodlines when they enter the herd as cows,” said Blew.
Both Blew and Skinner try to keep a bull until he reaches 5 or 6 years of age to get the optimal usage out of him. “By the time he is 6, a bull is getting a little heavy for the cows,” said Blew.
Skinner says their rough environment will take its toll on a bull by the time he’s 5, plus they like to keep fresh genetics in their herd to prevent line breeding.
Cowman’s Crystal Ball Buying bulls isn’t as easy as looking into a crystal ball, but ranchers who know their program and set production goals can utilize selection tools like EPDs to determine their cowherd’s future.
The Bull Buyers’ Crystal Ball
Skinner said emerging technology such as incorporating 50K DNA data into the EPDs is definitely beneficial to his operation. “I feel that we can put more faith into the EPDs in our selection decisions because the accuracies are higher.”

“When I’m studying a set of EPDs,” said Blew, “I really appreciate having the breed percentile rankings right there so I know how the bull stacks up at a glance.”
The hype and excitement of sale day gathers cattlemen and women to not only select the next generation of genetics, but to join producers in a social setting. “Buying bulls is fun,” said Blew. “I enjoy the selection process and the relationship I’ve built with my seedstock suppliers. The way I get treated after the sale – customer service – carries a lot of value. It’s still a reputation business and people make the difference in everything.” ■

Experts Recommend Low-Stress Methods to Handle Bulls by Sheyna Strommen for American Red Angus Magazine
During this bull-buying season, ranchers have a lot on their minds for selection criteria. Among them are the bull’s carcass traits, maternal traits, weaning weights and, for some, disposition also plays into the equation. Red Angus cattle are known for their amicable disposition and quiet nature, but even with expected docility, producers must always be mindful of their surroundings, particularly when it comes to bulls. Basic principles of low-stress cattle handling are amplified when working with or moving bulls, simply because they tend to be tough and independent. It’s important to remember: • Cattle like to come back the way they came • Cattle want to go around anything that has been pressuring them • Cattle want to see you • Cattle want to be with and will go to other cattle • Cattle can only process one main thought at a time
Unlike a cow, which has a fight-orflight response to pressure, a bull is more apt to fight. This could mean trouble when a rancher puts too much pressure on a bull and doesn’t give him a way to remove himself from the pressure.
Ron Gill, a professor and extension livestock specialist for Texas AgriLife Extension; John Maas, DVM and Veterinary Specialist in Cooperative Extension for the University of California-Davis; and Curt Pate, low-stress cattle handling expert from Montana, offered several recommendations for working with bulls in the Beef Quality Assurance’s video “Cattle Handling Tips for Cow-Calf Producers.” The video features 75 minutes of cattle handling tips
38 American Red Angus Magazine ■ January 2014
and advice for the beginner to the expert cattle handler. One of the chapters is devoted to working with bulls. “We breed our bulls to be very effective breeders and to be resilient in a number of situations,” explained Maas, who added, “Some of that is a bit of a problem because they’re tough.”
Gill acknowledged that handling bulls is different from handling cows. “The problem with a bull is you never know what kind of a mood he’s going to wake up in,” said Gill. “He may wake up that morning in a bad mood. Because of that, producers must approach bulls with caution – even those bulls that have been lifetime pets.” Unlike a cow, which has a fightor-flight response to pressure, a bull is more apt to fight. This could mean trouble when a rancher puts too much pressure on a bull and doesn’t give him a way to remove himself from the pressure.
When pressure is applied too abruptly and too severely, Gill explained, the bull will learn to brace against you – in the pasture, in the corrals, wherever.

Our Program
Ludvigson Stock Farms is a family operation established in 1954. Our roots are based in the commercial cow calf and cattle feeding sectors. We understand what is needed to be successful in these areas and it has shaped our breeding philosophies in the genetics that we produce.
Our Ranches
The main cowherd runs in Central Montana headquartered on the Jim Peterson Ranch just outside of Buffalo. The Peterson Ranch serves as the home to our 550 head nucleus Red Angus herd. We also maintain an advanced genetics facility in Iowa where we conduct all of our embryo collection and export work.
Our Genetics
We have established a breeding philosophy that incorporates optimizing multiple traits without over emphasizing any single trait. Our herd sires Expectation and Packer are perfect examples that balance all traits and produce least cost cattle with exceptional phenotypes. Our next generation of herd sires such as Takeover, Nextpectation, Night Calver and Saga continue this tradition and headline the bulls that we will be selling in this event.
Our Bull and Heifer Development
We develop our bulls and females at the Weschenfelder Development Center just outside of Shepherd, MT. The bulls are fed a high roughage ration designed to produce a 3.0 lb ADG with 0.2 of an inch back fat. The replacement females are fed a carrying ration and we have maintained over an 80% first service AI conception rate on our females. The cattle are developed for large rugged environments.
Our Team
The LSF team includes not only our family but our managers, cooperators and customers. It takes a team to remain competitive in the industry today and we value the input from all of our team members.
Our Key Members:
• Ryan Ludvigson – is our main marketing representative and oversees the cowherd and development operations in Montana. • Park Ludvigson – is our main breeding specialist, managing our embryo collection and transfer program as well as our embryo export program. • Rodger Reitman – Our main reproductive specialist and development manager – numerous years experience with seed stock and commercial herds. • Weschenfelder Family – operate the Weschenfelder Development Facility and are responsible for the development of our bulls and replacement females. • Cooperators – Well known and historic cooperating families (Raisland, Tilleman, Bootjack and Knaub)
Our Customers
Our customers play an integral and ongoing part in our breeding program. It would be impossible for us to remain competitive without constant input by our customers. Our customer's environments range from the High Desert to the High Plains and from the Midwest to the Rio Grande. Adaptability of our genetics has been the key to why our customers come back year after year.
$Profitability
New this year, every bull will have a $Profit Index. This index ranks cattle on their ability to return “profit” to the beef industry. We believe that this index will simplify the selection process for our customers and move their operations in the right direction faster in this competitive market. Please contact us to visit about this ground breaking index as well as to receive materials that explain the process in more detail.

Experts Recommend Low-Stress Methods to Handle Bulls He recommended applying pressure more slowly and cautiously. “When you’re putting pressure on the bull and he’s advancing toward you, you better backup a half-a-step or a full step until he backs off,” Gill said and added that when the bull backs up, it is time to put a little pressure back on him until he learns to move away from you.
Maas added that it helps to know the bulls individually. “At home, we treat some bulls right out in the pasture because we know their temperament. Others, we have to get them in a corral. There’s no two ways about it.” “If a bull’s on the fight, either leave him alone, put him with cows or really take your time to work with him because he can become dangerous,” Gill said.
If a bull’s on the fight, either leave him alone, put him with cows or really take your time to work with him because he can become dangerous.
When cattle-handling expert Curt Pate brings a new bull into his operation, he often spends time working with them in the pasture before turning them out with the cattle. He said in the video that

it’s worthwhile to “spend a little time working with bulls so you can move them, control them and put them anywhere in a pasture before you turn them out with the cows.”

Experts Recommend Low-Stress Methods to Handle Bulls
He uses young ranch horses and an open trailer in the middle of a pasture as a practice area for loading new bulls into a trailer without any facilities. “All you have to do is when the bull is looking away from the trailer, put pressure on him, and when he sticks his head toward the trailer, you take that pressure off, he explained. “Before long, he’ll be thinking that the trailer is the brush and he’ll go get in it. I like to do those kinds of things
before I turn the bulls out. And then when I go to get the bulls or to pull them, it’s a piece of cake. Experts agreed that when ranchers are handling sick bulls, extra precautions must be taken. “You’ve really got to slow down, said Pate, who noted that when big, bulky animals like bulls are sick or injured they will turn and fight on you faster than any other
animal. Or they’ll brush up and then you can’t get them out.
“When you approach a bull that’s sick, you’ve got to put the pressure on lightly and then you’ve got to move away. First thing I want to teach the bull is that I’m not going to keep that pressure on. As soon as he moves the way I want him to go, I’m going to take the pressure off. Once you teach him that, you can take that bull anywhere,â€? he said. â–

Franklin Livestock Inc. – Adding Red Angus to the Mix by Jennie Rucker for American Red Angus Magazine
Dennis Boone was skeptical when he first considered adding Red Angus to his herd. He was so familiar with the results he saw from his Angus bulls that he wasn’t sure he would be happy with Red Angus. But his good friend and neighbor of 15 years, Jesse Isgrigg, finally talked him into giving the red breed a try. “Jesse knows his cows and I trust what he tells me,” said Boone. “The Red Angus-sired calves really are thick with a lot of gut capacity and they are really good natured. They have a lot of potential.”
Jason Aycock and Dennis Boone have grown Franklin Livestock, Inc. into a flourishing business that helps Southeastern cattle producers market their calves in competitive feedlots.
Aycock and Boone are happy with the calves Red Angus-sired females are raising on their operation.
By incorporating Red Angus genetics into their herd, Franklin Livestock Inc. has improved both the consistency and quality of their cowherd.
Boone and his son, Grant, along with their partner Jason Aycock, own and run Franklin Livestock, Inc. a few miles outside of Louisburg, N.C., located in Franklin County, the namesake of their enterprise. What began as Boone’s idea has grown into a feedlot and brood cow operation that grossed more than $2 million last year.
The idea involved preconditioning calves from the Southeast and then providing them to western buyers. Boone and Aycock actually purchase the calves for their western buyers with capital from the buyers, and then keep the calves in their feedlots for 50 to 90 days. They vaccinate, castrate and get the calves bunk broke before they send them west. “Our main challenge is to keep them healthy. If it was an easy job then everyone would be doing it,” said Boone.
Calves from their own herd also go into the feedlots out west but Boone and Aycock always retain ownership on the calves they raise. “With the price increase these last few years, we are hitting the market just right. We are able to track these calves when they go on feed out west and with their gains and the backgrounding we have given them here, it has been very profitable for us,” said Boone.
52 American Red Angus Magazine ■ January 2014
They raise approximately 450 calves out of their own brood cows each year. They use a total of 33 bulls on their various herds, calving in both the spring and fall. They appreciate Red Angus’ calving ease and milking ability. One of their herds of 150 head is on a separate farm near Wilson, N.C. When they weaned that set of Red Anguscross calves in September, they averaged 682 pounds.
“The Red Angus influence has definitely helped our weaning weights,” said Boone.
Many of the cows were purchased as entire herds when producers needed to sell, especially during the drought a few years back. As a result, they are multicolored with a wide variety of genetics. By incorporating Red Angus genetics, they have improved the consistency of their calf crop and the quality of the carcass. “These are calves that are easy-maintaining with more beef and more total pounds,” said Boone. Aycock works mainly with the cowherd as Boone deals more with the feedlot. Aycock also has an off-the farm-job working with underground utilities but he has been working with Boone since he was a young boy. Previously, Aycock would purchase sale barn calves in the winter and sell them in the spring. They are still buying sale barn calves but on a much larger, more profitable scale. They buy at Carolina Stockyards and East Carolina Stockyard but they also buy

Franklin Livestock Inc. – Adding Red Angus to the Mix calves directly from producers off the farm. About 10 percent of their producers are offering Red Angus-influenced calves and Boone believes that number will increase in the future as more cattlemen see the positive qualities in the Red Angus. These feedlot calves now come in a wide range of colors and weights but their buyers have been satisfied with the results. They have repeat buyers and it is even at a point now where the Franklin Livestock partners can be selective about what buyers they work with. Their buyers currently are in South Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota and Kansas. They have grown by word of mouth. “We have tried hard to guarantee that whatever I have told the buyers we would do, we have followed through and done it,” said Boone.
Boone said Southeastern cattle producers need to realize that their calves are
competing in feedlots against cattle raised in Montana and other western states. But the Southeastern cattle are finishing earlier and faster than larger framed, western-range cattle. The western buyers are pleased with their cattle and their efficiency with feed conversions. Boone said, “I make sure those calves are healthy and ready when they get to the feedlots out west.” This is more profitable for both Franklin Livestock and the feedlots because the “health homework” has already been done. The calf has been completely processed so all it needs to do in the feedlot is gain weight.
Their original goal was to run 1,000 head through their lots each year. Now they go through 1,000 head in two months. Last year they processed 5,000 head. According to Boone, this is the most intensive part of the cattle business, even more than a dairy. He some-

The black pipe prevents bacteria from growing in the troughs. times puts in a 20-hour work day depending on whether a new shipment comes in and how many sick ones he needs to treat. Much of their work is done on horseback. They check the feedlots three times a day by riding through and checking for sick cattle. They immediately pull and treat sick calves.
Franklin Livestock Inc. – Adding Red Angus to the Mix Sometimes they rope and treat them right in the pens if it will be easier on the calf. Upper respiratory issues are their major problem.
If Boone could give cattle producers advice he would tell them to make sure calves are accustomed to eating feed before selling. He says the calves that are bunk broke have less health problems than ones that have no idea about what feed is. He feels this is the No. 1 most important thing cow-calf producers can do. Boone and Aycock keep records on all the calves in the feedlots on the CattleMax software program. Boone is also inputting all the brood cows on the program. The calves they raise are source and age verified with an RFID ear tag. A copy of the health records on each calf is sent with each load of calves. Boone also grades each calf that goes on the truck. He uses the standard S-M-L (small, medium or large) grading system and keeps all the shorts at
Franklin Livestock to feed out as freezer beef. Since these calves are already graded this way, they go into pens at the feedlot that will be consistent and finish at the same time.
makes good calves, said Boone.
While Boone likes a four-way cross utilizing Red Angus, Angus, Charolais and Hereford, Red Angus genetics have made a believer out of him and those genetics are here to stay. Red Angus bulls have helped him produce a more-consistent product that finishes quicker. He especially likes the way Red Angus and Simmental cross. The Simmental gives the calves bone and frame, and the Red Angus adds muscle and depth, resulting in a calf that is a total package for the feedlot.
“We get to be a veterinarian, midwife, lawyer, accountant, laborer, engineer – you name it. We get to wear all the caps, said Boone. “Our feedlots are the closest these North Carolina cattle experience before they go into the big feedyards. We get them acclimated.
Aycock and Boone hope to increase their brood cow numbers to 600 to 800 head. With a greater number of cows, they will definitely need more bulls. Dennis always makes sure they use the best bull possible – one that is well put together phenotypically and has good EPDs to back him up.
These North Carolina cowboys are in the cattle business promoting and marketing Southeastern-raised calves that reflect on all North Carolina cattle producers. They are proving that feeder cattle from the Southeast can compete in the feedlot with western-raised cattle and they are opening the door for more opportunities – and profit – for cattle producers in their state. â–

Making and Keeping Connections
As smart devices have proliferated, “busy” has become synonymous with “important” and “communication” has become code for “instant.” People have developed a sense that connecting means “right now” by some type of technology and have all but forgotten the contentment of looking into the eyes and reading the facial expressions of the person to whom they are directly speaking, the meaning and feel of a handshake or a hug, and the importance of connecting in person.
The good news is that Red Angus young people – possibly due to their grounding in the cattle world and a more traditional approach to people connections – recognize a variety of ways for connecting with people and maintaining those contacts as they journey through life. While they are quick to embrace technology, our youth can connect in mere seconds with a variety of services yet, they recognize the importance and necessity of developing personal connections. It’s Who You Know Networking, by definition, is a supportive system of sharing information and services among individuals and groups having a common interest. As young Red Angus breeders become more active, they begin to build their network that will connect them to other Red Angus and cattle industry professionals. JRA Director Kevin Tlach of Britt, Iowa, said, “If I had a quarter for every time I heard, ‘It’s not what you know, it’s who you know,’ I would have enough money to establish my dream Red Angus herd.” This old cliché rings true in helping emerging leaders establish themselves by getting “a foot in the door” with professionals or breeders.
“Meeting people also helps guide me through life because they are willing to give their opinions and share their experience if you ask them,” said Tlach. “When I was deciding my college major, I received many different ideas from people within the cattle industry and all walks of life. I probably would have missed out on learning opportunities and excellent advice if I hadn’t had these connections.”
Importance of Networking JRA Director Thomas Glascock of Pilot Point, Texas, said, “At the end of the day, personal relationships enable you to stand out and remain top of mind with industry profession-

2013 Junior Red Angus Board of Directors als. Networking is about making connections and building enduring, mutually beneficial relationships.”
He sited four reason networking is important. 1. Builds Character – Networking in a variety of different environments builds character. I am now able to approach anyone in a room and talk with them about mutual interests. Every event I attend is an opportunity to continue my professional development. 2. Increases Confidence – In addition to building character, I am building confidence – confidence that will helps us as young producers continue the progression of the Red Angus breed. 3. Develops Resources – Through activities and involvement, I have developed a network of industry leaders, producers and friends that I can contact for information regarding cattle, genetics or the industry. 4. Widens Circle of Influence – My involvement in the Red Angus breed has widened my circle of friends and colleagues and I am able to “plug in” to the Red Angus breed and establish contacts across the nation. Fellow JRA Director John Nelson of Chickasha, Okla., agreed. “Networking plays a crucial role in the growth of any business – and it’s all about making connections.”
“Whether building a small cattle business or a large commercial enterprise, the strongest and most important part of a business is the foundation, or its roots,” said Nelson. “The roots of a business are what collect the vital nourishment needed to generate its growth and success, and thus these roots need to be sown deep and be ever expanding. This can be achieved by networking.” How do you make connections? JRA Director Jaclyn Ketchum of Plevna, Mont., recalled a
Making and Keeping Connections
quote from Madeleine M. Kunin, American diplomat and former governor of Vermont. “Those who speak up, those who use their connections, are more likely to succeed than those who sit and wait.”
Ketchum’s involvement in organization such as 4-H and FFA have helped her make both personal and professional connections. “Some of these contacts have become my best friends and others have allowed me to go places I never thought possible,” said Ketchum. “The people I meet and connect with have become such a blessing to my life. They have opened my eyes to new ideas and have impacted my life in a variety of ways.” Ketchum encourages juniors to be active. “Just get yourself out there, become involved, participate in different events and don’t hesitant to introduce yourself to someone new.”
“The stronger the network, the greater the likelihood for success,” said Nelson. “Everything from county events to state fairs and national shows has great potential for networking. Don’t be shy. Get to know others in your line of work and start making connections.” Rachel Davis, JRA director from Montpelier, Va., said, “Meeting new people can be an uncomfortable experience,
72 American Red Angus Magazine ■ January 2014
but just remember to stay calm, introducing yourself and shake the person’s hand.” She suggests engaging in meaningful conversation with appropriate questions on the topic in which you are interested and always end your conversation by thanking your new acquaintance.
“Most people will give out their contact information if they think you are genuinely interested, so don’t be afraid to use the information on their business card,” she advised. “If you don’t maintain the connection, it is likely the person won’t remember you, so stand out from the crowd and really strive to stay connected.” “JRA programs offer a unique opportunity for juniors to network and build friendships with young producers from all over the country, and to learn to connect with those from a different background,” said JRA President Chris Mushrush of Strong City, Kan. “Not only do juniors learn to develop lasting friendships with the other members, they learn public speaking skills, how to express their ideas in a group, and how to meet new people in an unfamiliar environment,” said Mushrush. “The skills gained through such programs give members the confidence that they need to make an impression in their future career.”
Making and Keeping Connections
Communication is Key Mushrush also said face-to-face interaction is a crucial skill that is becoming less and less emphasized. In a recent Kansas State University College of Agriculture networking dinner, spokespeople for companies seeking interns and young employees stressed the importance of the ability to speak and express ideas to others.
“Some stated that they put more stock into a prospective employee’s social skills that they did their college GPA,” recalled Mushrush. “They want people who are able to communicate, work with others and be able to sell a product or idea. The companies said they will teach young employees the other skills they need for their job.“ Social Media “Because of technology, networking has taken on a whole new meaning with the use of the internet, texting, instant messaging, email, Facebook, Twitter and blogs,” said Glascock. “We are able to expand our network base in an instant. Networking has made communication more efficient, reaching out to our ‘clicks’ locally, nationally and internationally with a simple touch of a button in a matter of seconds. It no longer
74 American Red Angus Magazine ■ January 2014
takes days to find someone or to research information.”
Davis agrees that social media is the most common form of communication that young people use to network. “Facebook and Twitter are a young person’s goto media to keep in contact with their friends – it’s accessible and easy to find a person and shoot them a quick message.” She cautions, however, to not rely on social media as your only networking strategy. “Separate yourself from the crowd with a hand-written, personalized thank-you note and sincere conversation.” Ketchum concluded, “There are 7.046 billion people on this earth and every single person knows something or has experienced something that another has not. The hard part is having the desire to get next to people and share information, experiences, stories, or just have a heart-to-heart conversation.”
She reminds juniors to take advantage of opportunities to meet and connect with others. “This might mean putting away the cell phone, stepping out of your comfort zone or being more outgoing, but the reward you receive from doing those things is priceless.” ■

Understanding Early Embryonic Loss by Rebecca Mettler for American Red Angus Magazine
On average, fertilization is achieved 90-95 percent of the time when a cow is bred through natural service or artificial insemination (AI). However, roughly only 60 percent of the cows remain pregnant from that same single service. These are numbers that Research Scientist Tom Geary, Ph.D. of USDAAgriculture Research Service, Fort Keogh in Miles City, Mont., has been studying. Embryonic mortality is something that is affecting the beef industry both on the seedstock and commercial levels.
Tom Geary, Ph.D. of USDA- Agriculture Research Service, Fort Keogh in Miles City, Mont.
“Embryonic mortality is a likely culprit anytime there is a major shift in calving distribution,” Geary said. Most of the embryonic loss occurs before day 20 and doesn’t disrupt a cow’s estrous cycle. Embryonic mortality occurs roughly 25 percent of the time when maternal recognition of pregnancy fails. “It is easy to detect embryonic loss from day 28-45 but those aren’t the ones that are causing the problems for producers,” Geary said.
84 American Red Angus Magazine ■ January 2014
What can be gained by more cows and heifers conceiving at the first breeding and maintaining a pregnancy? “Calving seasons would be shorter – it’s important to tighten those down,” stated Geary. A shorter calving season increases profitability by enabling producers to manage cattle better according to their environment.
He also points out that seedstock bulls born early in the calving season are more likely to make the cut for the bull sale. “Right now I’m not sure if some producers realize the amount of embryonic mortality that is happening,” Geary said.
Understanding Early Embryonic Loss
Geary estimates that the cost of embryonic failure to the beef and dairy industries with today’s prices could easily be $2 billion annually in lost productivity.
Progress of finding out when and why a pregnancy is failing during the first few weeks after fertilization is difficult without earlier pregnancy diagnosis. Now, with very extensive tests and detailed blood sampling, pregnancy can be detected as early as day 17 to 18. Generally, day 28 after breeding is the earliest pregnancy can be determined with ultrasound or blood tests. Collaborative research with colleague Mike MacNeil and Dr. Mike Smith at the Univeristy of Missouri has identified the factors that are most important for maintaining a pregnancy when timed AI is used.
An increased level of estradiol in a cow’s blood at the time of breeding is the single most important variable that affects fertility. Estradiol is the predominate estrogen produced when the cow is in estrus (heat) and ovulates, so with natural service, this is not a limitation. Other factors that affect fertility are progesterone levels on day 7 after breeding, progesterone before breeding and the ovulatory follicle size. Although informative, it is key to keep in mind that these factors are not mutually exclusive as these are all factors that exist together during fertilization and early embryonic life. “As a whole that only accounts for a small percentage of the variation in pregnancy success,” Geary said.
These findings support the role of progesterone from CIDRs because of the increased synchrony that is gained in a timed AI situation. Use of a CIDR also improves a producer’s ability to induce estrous cycles among anestrous cows.

“Tight synchrony is obviously the key along with the appropriate timing of AI related to peak estrus, Geary said.
Management Practices to Limit Reproductive Losses Limiting handling stress is one step cattlemen can take to decrease negative effects to reproduction. “Try to decrease handling stress for heifers especially, said Geary.
Heifers react differently to stress than do cows, particularly handling stress. Cows are more conditioned and maybe not stressed out as much because the situation is not new to them. “It all depends on what the animal perceives as stress, Geary said.

The best time to move or transport cattle is right after breeding (within 24 hours). The critical window to maintain a low-stress environment is from day 12-15 after AI. With all this said, Geary understands that producers sometimes have to move animals at inopportune times and often times have been doing it for years. Embryonic mortality is nothing new, so producers who need to do this have learned to accept a certain level of viable pregnancies. Geary pointed out an example of another stress factor that is out of ranchers’ control. He mentioned how the reintroduction of wolves in the Western states could be having an effect on cattle reproduction, specifically pregnancy rates.
Dr. Reinaldo Cooke and colleagues at Oregon State Univeristy have conducted research on the stress effects of wolves by introducing cattle to the sounds and smells of wolves and visual stimuli of dogs. The study showed a link between the predator influence and stress.

Elk have also been shown to have lower pregnancy rates in areas where wolves exist and some of this is suspected to be due to stress. Researchers from South Dakota State University, University of Wyoming and University of Minnesota found that Post-AI nutrition has an affect on pregnancy rates. Specifically, a decrease in plane of nutrition resulting in loss of body weight can decrease pregnancy rates among heifers.
Geary says that during periods of drought it is important to supplement appropriately to maintain nutrition.

He also urges producers to keep good records during synchronization and breeding. The information can help identify any causes of decreased fertility in their herds if the problem arises. The Other Side of the Equation Male fertility may account for pregnancy failures as well. A Fort Keogh field trial suggested that 10 percent of the time fertilization is achieved by less than optimal sperm which could result in loss of pregnancy.
Science is beginning to uncover the role of the male in fertility. In the future, there may be a test that can help characterize a bull’s fertility. Breeding soundness exams could incorporate a simple test that detects bio-markers that are associated with lower fertility, for example, the amount of marginal sperm within a semen sample. “Pay attention to bull fertility and the role it could play in pregnancy,” Geary said.
Each bull is expected to contribute to the production of 20-30 calves, so the fertility of each bull is at least 20 times more important than a single cow’s fertility. Science is getting better at measuring embryonic mortality and Geary wishes he could identify all the factors that pertain to pregnancy in cows.
He and his collogues are looking for the additional mechanisms involved in embryonic mortality. After they are recognized, researchers can go back in a whole herd perspective and figure out what goes on in order to increase fertility. ■

You and Your Business Deserve This
by Jennifer Deroin, Director of Business Development, The Nichols Accounting Group P.C.
Every entrepreneur faces the same conundrum; falling into the trap of working in your business. That may seem like an erroneous statement, but it’s a true statement. Whether you’re running a grocery store, a construction company or the family ranch, business owners often fall victim to constantly working IN their business instead of ON their business. As the business owner, you wear a lot of hats; CEO, CFO, COO, HR Director, Marketing Director and general labor. The go-to solution is often, “I just need to work harder,” or “I just need to hire more help.” While either of those statements may have some truth in them, often times, the real truth is revealed when you take the luxury of time to step back, look at the big picture of what you’re trying to accomplish, and create a better path. Sounds easy enough, right? If it was easy, businesses wouldn’t have such high failure rates, and multi-generational family businesses would succeed well beyond the third generation. Statistics tell us otherwise. So what can you do to prevent yourself from falling into the trap? The luxury of time You have many precious resources to manage. One of them is the off-balance sheet asset of time. It’s a new year, and with it, the promise of new possibilities. To change habits that are years in the making, a conscientious effort must be made – just like everything else in life. Make the commitment to yourself, your family and your business to set aside time this year to work on the areas that are causing you pain. Like any other objective, start with determining where you’re at and where you’d like to be, and what you’d like to accomplish. How do I get started? One of the best places to start is your company’s mission, vision and core values. “What?” you may ask. “That’s
for big Fortune 500 companies!” Not true. The purpose of your company’s mission, vision and value statement is to create the core principles from which you will make decisions that are in the best interest of the company (mission). You and your employees will clearly understand the behaviors that are expected to be present when representing the operation and dealing with others (your values). And you’ll have a clear picture of where you’re taking the company, and what it should look like when you get there (your vision). No one knows your company better than you and your key employees. Take the time to document these important statements and you’ll have the basis for future planning.
Now what? Every business, no matter the industry or size, will have better outcomes if some foundational basics are executed. After developing your mission, vision and values, work on the next three areas: 1. Strategic Business Plan: Spend quality time thinking about the future of your business and the best path to achieve your objectives. Your strategic plan will outline desirable, clearly defined objectives that, if executed, will deliver measured results. Don’t worry about fancy terms and stay away from form templates. Make it your own, designing a plan that will move you towards your goals. Describe specifically the big picture concept of what needs to happen to get you to point “B.”
2. Organizational Chart: This isn’t about titles. This is about clearly defining who does what. Do you have the right people performing the right tasks; are you maximizing strengths? Helping individuals understand their job description and how they can best contribute to the business success is critical. People typically want to rise to the occasion … but they need to know what the occasion is. Also address how you’ll measure and assess expected performance. 3. Operating Plan: What’s the difference between the strategic plan and the operating plan? The strategic plan defines “what,” the operating plan attacks “how.” Identify opportunities for efficiency, improvements and execution – tactics, or nuts and bolts. With these three pieces, you’re on your way to working ON your business. There’s more work to be done, but start here. Sometimes feeling overwhelmed causes stagnation. Don’t let the fear of the process stop you from starting. Seek the advice of a professional if needed. The business that you – and possibly your family before you – have built is worth the effort. The return on the investment in your time will yield dividends that are measured in many areas. You, your family and your business deserve the results you’ll find when you carve out the luxury of time to work on your business. ■

Member News Red Angus breeders find opportunity halfway around the world
In recent years, the Russian government has set an aggressive plan into action to restock their country with high-quality dairy and beef cattle as they rebuild their economy. Support programs funded to the tune of hundreds of billions of Russian rubles (almost $10 billion in U.S. dollars) are intended to stimulate the development of the livestock sector over the next seven years – a sector that has been in decline since the break-up of the Soviet Union. These programs have allocated monies for new construction and modernization of old livestock farms as well as the purchase of domestic and imported highquality breeding dairy and beef cattle, semen and embryos.
In 2012, imports of live cattle to Russia rose by 50 percent in both volume and value as 137,00 head worth nearly a half a billion U.S. dollars arrived in the country. Fifty-four percent of those imports came from American soil making Russia the largest world market for U.S. cattle exports in 2012.
Russian imports of live cattle slowed in 2013 but the former Soviet Union remains a strong growth market for bovine semen,
embryos and knowledge. Sexed semen in particular is highly sought after as Russians strive to accelerate their herd development. The Ministry of Agriculture announced plans to allocate 3.5 billion rubles (approximately $110 million) for livestock breeding activities.
Learning More The South Dakota Department of Agriculture (SDDA) partnered with the Montana and Kansas Departments of Agriculture to send a delegation to Moscow and Novosibirsk, Russia’s third-largest city located in the Siberian region, on a 10-day trade mission in late October 2013. RAAA member Craig Bieber of Leola, S.D., was among the delegation that participated in meetings with the U.S. Embassy and USDA Foreign Ag Service Professionals, as well as local government leaders, Russian cattle producers and potential buyers of U.S. beef genetics. The focus of the trade mission was to learn more about the Russian government’s plans to jump-start their beef industry and how the U.S. can be a partner in helping them reach their goals. “The initiative Russia’s government has in place to rebuild their beef industry is an ambition one,” said Bieber, “and the opportunity to tour farms and meet highlevel government officials was extremely interesting. Our cattle industry has a huge opportunity to supply them with
Craig Howard spent two weeks in Russia as part of a 14-person group of expert AI technicians breeding 33,000 heifers. Pictured back in South Dakota, he foresees continued opportunity for U.S. beef cattle genetics half-way around the world. (Photo credit: Aberdeen News)

breeding females, semen and embryos through 2020 and beyond.”
Teaching More While thousands of U.S. bred heifers have landed on Russian soil the past few years, Russian nationals are unfamiliar with modern production practices to continue the expansion of agriculture in their country’s rebuilding efforts. One particular area of need lies in reproduction and artificial insemination. RAAA member Craig Howard of Leola, S.D., traveled to the Bryansk region located along the Ukraine border in August of 2013 as one of 14 AI technicians hired by a private Russian company to breed 33,000 heifers. “It was a really neat opportunity and not a chance everyone would get,” said Howard. “I saw how advanced we are compared to other places. The Russians will get there. They are buying the right cattle, asking the right people the right questions and they have some very good cattle.”
According to Howard, the Russian ranchers still have a ways to go to catch up to modern livestock practices. In the U.S., most producers grew up watching and learning from their fathers and grandfathers, but in Russia, workers have been removed from farms and ranches and don’t have the instinct or handed-down knowledge to know what to do. Split into teams of six technicians, Howard said they didn’t waste any time tackling the task at hand. The Russians gave shots and brought the cattle to the chutes, while Howard and his crew inseminated the synchronized heifers with semen imported from the U.S. Rebuilding the Russian cattle herd is important to the country – most of the beef herd was used as a food source during the difficult times, and now the Russian government wants to rebuild that sector of their economy. Their government wants producers to utilize a mixture of

Bieber, left, along with Brandon Peterson of Alcester, S.D., and Ty Eschenbaum, South Dakota Department of Agriculture, stand in front of St. Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow. forest and open meadows for grazing, and cattle will be supplemented in the winter months with corn and millet silage.
In addition to bringing in cattle, genetics and technicians, Russia is also importing livestock-handling equipment. And, they offer subsidies for straight-bred cattle – about 5,500 rubles (or $175) per cow per year for animals in production.
Howard said the demand for expert help will continue to grow in the future beyond the work of technicians as Russian ranchers will need guidance and mentoring in management practices.
“The government is really working hard to build the beef industry,” Howard said. “They have interest-free loans for equipment and cows. With the emerging middle class, there is more demand for beef from the government. As their economy grows, there is still plenty of room for all of us; we’ll still be a quality meat supplier in the world.” ■ (Story sources – “Cattle expert lends hand overseas” by Connie Sieh Groop, Aberdeen News, Aberdeen, S.D., and the South Dakota Department of Agriculture.)
Born March 3, 1930, in Merrill, Ore., to Matt and Margaret Brown, George was the second youngest of seven children. As a child, George spent summer vacations on his grandmothers’ ranch on Owl Creek near Thermopolis, Wyo., and he wanted to be a “real Wyoming cowboy.” After the death of his father, he moved to the ranch at the age of eight. He graduated from Thermopolis High School in 1948 and married Donna Lee Anthony on Dec. 27, 1951. They had three children. He and Donna bought a family ranch on Owl Creek from his aunt and lived there until moving to the Hoodoo Ranch as its manager in January 1967 – a position he held for 43 years until retiring in 2010. In 2010, the Red Angus Association of America honored George with the Commercial Producer of the Year award.
George was well known and respected in the cattle industry. His 43-year history at Hoodoo was marked more by fine-tuning goals rather than following fads. George selected cattle that were early maturing, possessed moderate frame scores and were sound uddered. His intense 43-year selection for moderate, easy-fleshing females that were sound and functional at high elevation created a keen interest in the Hoodoo heifer calf crop. In the late 1990s, George switched Hoodoo’s entire bull battery to Red Angus and they positively impacted the ranch’s profitability when mated to his high-percentage Charolais cowherd of 3,500 head. As a result of his breeding decisions, Hoodoo cattle excelled in the feedyard and on the grid.
George was on the Board of Directors of several organizations including the Buffalo Bill Historical Center and Shoshone National Bank.
He is survived by his wife Donna; son Don (Linda) Brown of Las Vegas, Nev.; daughters Mamie (Jim) Knadler of Laramie, Wyo., and Mary (Marvin) Haugen of Gillette, Wyo.; grandchildren Mark (Shelley) Musser, Rhys (Kitt) Haugen, Michael Haugen, Blake (Amanda) Knadler, Afton Brown and Tony Brown; great grandchildren Forrest, Tyler, Carson and Jacob; sisters Jean Burtis and Mary of Portland, Ore.,; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and three sisters. Daniel Lee Barber Daniel Lee Barber “Danny,” 54, of Edgar, Mont., passed away suddenly on Nov. 11, 2013. A memorial service was held Nov. 15, 2013, at the Barber Ranch.
Dan was born Jan. 30, 1959, to Henry and Betty Barber in Billings, Mont. His family farmed in Billings until 1969 when they moved to Edgar. He grew up farming and ranching alongside his father Henry. On Oct. 11, 1980, he married his lifelong partner, Ginger. Then, on Nov. 16, 1987, he was blessed with the joy of his life, daughter Keshia. Dan took over the family operation in Edgar where he and Ginger made their family home. Farming and ranching became his life’s passion, which he loved. Dan is survived by his wife Ginger, daughter Keshia, mother Betty, sister Linda (Cecil) Mullins, nieces Amanda, Jessica and Michelle, one great nephew and three great nieces. He is preceded in death by his father Henry. ■
