Brain Trust is an educational, interactive event in which members not only learn about that year’s particular topic, but participate in small group discussions and deliver feedback to RAAA leadership.
This year’s Brain Trust is on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, at the Denver Airport Marriott at Gateway Park, Aurora, Colo., this year’s Red Angus headquarters. Scheduled shuttle service to the National Western Stock
Show will be available from this new location, and the meeting facilities look fantastic. The RAAA Board of Directors will meet Jan. 9 and 10, and the Junior Red Angus Association will host the Loaded for Leadership seminar those same days. Another change to the NWSS schedule is that the Red Angus Junior Show will have its own day, showing the morning of Saturday, Jan. 11, prior to Brain Trust. Visit redangus.org/calendar for more information. And speaking of participation and feedback, if you haven’t already done so, be sure to log on to Member Date-REDS and fill out the membership questionnaire by Dec. 15.
A family business When you sit down and think about the cattle business, you realize how much of our industry is family-owned. The average cowherd size is 44 head with over 90 percent of the cow ownership being in herd sizes of 100 head or less. The cattle business is very much familyowned and managed with many decisions made at mealtime around the kitchen table. When family lives, works and fellowships together it makes for a very close-knit, kindred relationship.
With that thought in mind, I sincerely wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and wonderful New Year. May your holidays be filled with great memories and blessings of wonderful joy. ■

Belonging to an association is far more important than paying membership dues or Total Herd Reporting fees. Belonging translates to participating in discussions and decisions that will improve the services and benefits the association provides to its stakeholders.

Participation is essential If you look back on the history and formation of any organization, you will discover that each began with a group of dedicated people with a common goal in mind. That goal may have been to solve a problem where strength in numbers and a focused vision lead to a solution. Or, in the case of the RAAA, that common goal was to promote and nurture a breed of cattle that our founders felt deserved a role in the beef cattle industry.

JRA Wants You!
’Tis the season of giving. The value of giving of “self, not wealth” through talents, skills and time is immeasurable. How may you give during the upcoming year? 2014 could be the perfect year to volunteer your skills and talents to benefit Red Angus youth. The JRA is extending an invitation for involvement in the varied programs geared toward beef industry education and leadership development of its members. Though the JRA does benefit from financial assistance, there are other ways to offer support. But who, exactly is needed and in what capacity?
Young Red Angus Enthusiasts The JRA supports Red Angus enthusiasts who are 20 years of age and younger and who are seeking membership privileges and involvement in Red Angus. If you know of a young person interested in Red Angus – whether from a registered or commercial perspective – encourage him or her to take advantage of the affordable, $20-peryear JRA membership that includes many programs, contests, events and communication for members. Adult Volunteers Volunteers that serve as directors or advisors for state or regional junior Red Angus associations are imperative for growth of the entire JRA from a grassroots perspective. An active state junior organization is directly proportional to the number of juniors who participate at the national level. Opportunity for juniors to be involved at the state level expands personal connections, maintains enthusiasm and builds confidence.
8 American Red Angus Magazine ■ December 2013
What does it take to be a volunteer state advisor? Primarily, volunteers make a commitment of time to share with young people, possess the ability to organize meetings and events and have an interest in supporting the youth who make up our Red Angus industry.
It is no small task to lead a state junior association but the return on investment is immeasurable. Often, two or more volunteers work together to lead a state group – complementing each other with skills and time. If taking on a leadership role is not an option, state associations always need volunteers to assist with field days, shows, fundraising, communications, photography, meetings or other gatherings of Red Angus youth.
We also welcome adult volunteers at the national level to assist with contests, programs and events including Loaded 4 Leadership, the Young Stockman Program, Round-Up and the Junior Red Angus National Show. For more information on the JRA, I invite you to visit redangus.org/jra. Thank you to the volunteers making a difference for our Red Angus youth! Your time and contributions are appreciated. For those considering volunteering, your contributions will enhance the programs of the JRA and the lives of those young people who participate. Your return on investment will be the development of leaders for our breed, industry and society in general. Your time and talents can benefit many! - continued on next page -

Member Services Bulletin
As we approach spring, a thought for many is sale day preparations. Moving forward into the New Year, there are many small details to keep in mind, such as DNA testing and Sale Catalog Data Extract needs. We encourage members to make requests sooner than later. Why are Quality Samples so Important?
A quality sample ensures that samples are not contaminated and are less likely to result in failed samples. If samples fail to produce results, this will cause a delay in time to receive results. This is due to either waiting for samples to reprocess or having to submit new samples. If in question about how to collect a quality sample, please reference our helpful tips online, in the September article in ARA Magazine on page 16 or call the National Office. When is the best time to submit DNA?
After the samples are collected, fill out the RAAA order form and send your samples to the National Office. Again allowing time for quality samples to be processed and receive results. Remember, the turnaround time for DNA results is 20 business days. Parentage Results
The best way to reduce hassle with parent verification is to sub-
mit your herd sires and dams to be tested and ‘on file’ for when the time comes to submit progeny. Doing so will help reduce the time to find a qualification if a sire or dam is excluded. Genomic Merit (50K)
Genomic merit includes Osteopetrosis, AlphaMannosidosis, parentage and enhanced EPDs. This allows members to get the majority of tests done at once while providing animals with an advantage. Results now include added data for CED, CEM, HPG and STAY EPDs. Animals that were previously tested for RA50K are being updated with this valuable information. Developmental Duplication (DD) Genetic Defect Testing Available “Developmental Duplication is a genetic defect caused by the recessive trait of the known allele. Calves can be born with additional limbs, usually duplication of the front legs originating from the neck and shoulder region. Calves born with the genetic defect can thrive, especially if the
extra limbs are surgically removed.” - By Jonathan E. Beever, Ph.D.
DD genetic tests are similar to AM, NH, MA and OS such that the test results determine if the animal is a carrier or free of the trait. DD testing is available through RAAA. RAAA DD testing is $25 for a standalone test or $20 when added to RA50K testing. Sale Catalog Data Extract
Making requests to receive EPDs and pedigrees that are needed to complete your catalog is easy. Compose a list of the animals’ registration numbers with lot numbers into an Excel spreadsheet.
If a template layout is needed, don’t fret, two options are available and can be viewed online. Choose the template that works best for you and email your Excel file and template choice to scde@redangus.org. Allow a few business days to receive your request via email. For more details on SCDE and to view the template options, visit redangus.org/marketing/ sale-planner.

Friendships, shared passion make Round-Up memorable
One of the highlights of the JRA year is Round-Up – a unique and distinctly different program that exposes all who attend to different regions of the United States, a variety of cattle genetics and management systems, a wealth of breeder and industry associate contacts, opportunities to meet new friends and reconnect with old friends, and fun. “Showdown Under the Big Western Skies” brought juniors and adult chaperones to eastern Montana in 2013. With a diverse variety of activities, stops and contests rolled into the event, those who attend Round-Up express equally diverse experiences in “my favorite things about Round-Up.” Keiley Banfield, junior advisor for the Red Angus Association of the Carolinas, Aberdeen, N.C. When the Red Angus of the Carolinas Juniors made that first plan to head off with six members and two chaperones four years ago, I had no idea that I would have just as much fun as the kids! Since then, Donna Fulton and I have taken as many as 10 young people every year to Round-Up. Montana was a reunion for some and a first time for a few of our group. That first flight (for some), and being so far from home could rattle some, but our group pulls together! Some of the most fun I have is watching the interaction of these young breeders and the adults they meet on the trip. I try and photograph the fun, from rolling around in the grass together, to asking thoughtprovoking questions of their peers. These are truly some remarkable kids! During the speech contest, some of the best questions were from juniors paying attention and respecting the time and effort of the speech writer. During the quiz bowl, instead of attacking one another for a wrong answer, juniors discussed the correct answer. There is fun and learning in every day. With that said, ranch visits are a particular favorite of mine. Standing "on top of the world" at Milk Creek Reds was jaw dropping – amazing! Another favorite stop for me was Camp Needmore where we all had time to kick back and relax at a barn dance.
20 American Red Angus Magazine ■ December 2013
These juniors now have no fear of going across this big country and having a friend to call in times of need, or dropping in while passing by. What a great feeling for them to have when they move out into this world. I think most of the joy while on the trip is in the people we meet and the friendships we foster. I have no doubt that these junior members will be better people because of knowing each other!
John Nelson, JRA Director, Chickasha, Okla. My favorite thing at this year’s Round-Up was the people. Whether it was the producer that hosted us or the juniors that traveled thousands of miles to join us – I enjoyed it all. Also, meeting the Canadian juniors that joined us through the Canadian Exchange Program was a fun experience. Not only did I meet juniors across North America, but I learned how Montana producers raise and select Red Angus cattle that suit their operations. One producer mentioned, “We raise the same cattle. It’s just the land and the type of region that makes us different.” I did not fully comprehend what he was saying until now. The different types, kinds and style of Red Angus vary in different areas. For example, the animals in Washington differ from the animals in Florida. At the end of the day we are all here to do the same task – to further and multiply the breed of Red Angus.

Friendships, shared passion make Round-Up memorable
Thomas Glacock, JRA Director, Pilot Point, Teas Travelling to Montana for the JRA Round-Up was a fun experience – from the rolling hills and big, open skies to the ranches and the people involved. The scenery and atmosphere were breathtaking and agriculture in Montana is much different than agriculture in Texas.
One of the most interesting stops we made on the tour was Midland Bull Test in Columbus. This operation is headed by Steve Williams, a thirdgeneration rancher, and his wife Lindsay. They manage the business on the principal that practical, scientific and mathematical knowledge can improve profits for cattlemen. One of the basic traits they measured was the bull’s ability to convert nutrients into pounds, or feed efficiency. Feed efficiency was measured by GrowSafe systems and by using mathematical formulas to calculate the growth and feed efficiency across multiple breeds. Juniors should jump at the opportunity to travel the country, see different agricultural systems and meet people who have similar interests and passions. I am thankful for this experience and look forward to maintaining the relationships and friendships made on this trip! Rachel Davis, Northeast Region JRA Director, Montpelier, Va. I have had a blast both times I have attended the JRA Round-Up. This year’s theme for Round-Up was “Showdown Under the Big Western Skies” and the trip lived up to the
name! The weeklong trip through Montana was so packed with adventures and new opportunities waiting around the corner that it is hard to pick just one specific trip or place, but I especially remember the visit to Redland Red Angus.
We were greeted by the Redland crew who was very glad to have the JRA group at their place. They had gone through a lot of hard work to put together a scavenger hunt for the juniors. The scavenger hunt was awesome – we were put on teams and had to scavenge through one of their pastures looking for clues to the next clue card. The scavenger hunt was a fun way to learn about Montana ranching, vegetation and how their cattle live. Redlands also hosted the equipment I.D. and cattle evaluation contests in which I had fun competing. Along with hosting all of these competitions, the Redland hospitality included a wonderful meal for the Round-Up crew! Thanks again Redland Red Angus for being a host of the 2013 Round-Up the juniors had a blast! Jaclyn Ketchum, JRA director, Plevna, Mont. Round-Up 2013 for me was a blast! I had so much fun touring ranches, competing in contests, making new friends, meeting up with old friends and learning more about the Red Angus breed. If I had to choose my favorite part though, it would be just spending time with so many great people.
22 American Red Angus Magazine ■ December 2013
The cool part about Round-Up is that everyone on the trip has one thing in common – their love for Red Angus. Being able to sit down next to someone and talk about cows doesn’t always happen, but on Round-Up it’s almost guaranteed. Saying a bull’s name and everyone knowing exactly which one you are talking about, or debating whether or not to sell one of your heifers is another thing that happens with this group. You can learn so much from everyone and, at the same time, you have the chance to educate others on subjects they might not know about. I enjoyed having the chance to talk to people from all over the country and learn more about how their environments require them to do different things from what I have to do here in Montana. Learning about how “mountains” don’t exist in Texas and how in Virginia hay bales would never be stacked the way they are here in Montana was very enlightening. I also loved being able to spend time with people I have previously met through Red Angus events. Meeting new friends and keeping old friends is, in my opinion, the best part of Round-Up. Even through the chilling white water rafting on the Stillwater (cold weather threatened to freeze us to death!), I was able to find the silver lining and enjoyed the time I spent with fellow JRA members. I can’t wait till Round-Up 2014 where I will be “California Dreaming.”

Carlie Piercy, 2013 Round-Up Best-All-Around winner, Clinton, N.C. I really enjoyed attending the 2013 JRA Round-Up this past summer and have nothing but good, fun memories of my time in Montana. We toured lots of great ranches and livestock facilities, learning many new things about the Red Angus breed that will prepare us to be better advocates for the beef industry in our home states. I have to say that it is the people that make our Round-Up so great. I enjoy spending time with other youth that share my interest in livestock. No matter what we do at Round Up, we all connect and make it fun. Learning is fun when you are interested in the topic. Through different Round-Up competitions we were challenged and allowed to use our livestock skills and knowledge to compete and show our love for the Red Angus breed. My experiences with livestock activities have made me come to realize that there is no group of people any nicer than those involved with cattle. All of the Montana cattle operations were so nice to allow us to tour their facilities and give of their time to help make our experiences as fun as possible. Thank you to all the Red Angus staff, volunteers and sponsors for making JRA Round-Up possible.
Kevin Tlach, JRA Director, Britt, Iowa The JRA Round-Up is one of the best things that I have ever done. I have attended four years and have enjoyed every one of them. My favorite part of Round-Up is not the contests or even seeing the wonderful cattle. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy looking at great cattle, and I do have a competitive edge, but my favorite part is meeting JRA members with my same passion for the Red Angus breed throughout the country. There is nothing better than getting to know them and spending a week with them.
Have you made the list? The JRA Intern Placement Program has been updated and now includes a list of potential hosts (Red Angus operations and associated businesses that may be interested in hosting an intern. The list is available on the JRA webpages for interested interns to reference and contact. Agreeing to add your name to the list does NOT obligate you to accept an intern if contacted. It is simply an indication of operations a junior may contact when seeking an internship. If you are potentially willing to host an intern in the future, please send your operation name, contact person and contact information to dawn@redangus.org. You may also include a description of your operation.

New sponsorship provides opportunity for commercial youth In spring of 2013, an individual Red Angus operation stepped forward to establish the Round-Up Commercial Sponsorship. This financial award covers the registration fee and travel expenses for the selected junior from the commercial industry to attend JRA Round-Up. Any Red Angus breeder or staff member is invited to nominate a junior from the commercial cattle industry for the sponsorship. Applications are then reviewed by the fund sponsor and one junior is selected to experience Round-Up.
This year, Jake Jacobson, Max, N.D., was the first recipient of the Round-Up Commercial Sponsorship. Jake is a freshman at North Dakota State University in Fargo, N.D., and his family uses Red Angus in their commercial operation. My Round-Up Experience This past June, I had a great opportunity to travel to Billings, Mont., and attend the JRA Round-Up. Jake Jacobson A Red Angus producer
donated the sponsorship, making the trip possible for me. I left my family's ranch near Max, N.D., early on June 21 to pick up Kacey and Shaye Koester in Bismarck, N.D., then we head out to Big Sky Country. A very interesting and fun-filled week awaited me. Soon after arriving in Billings, the week's events kicked off. With the little time we had between all the fun events including rafting on the Stillwater River, stopping at the Montana Silversmith's store, Cowboy Church, the Custer's Last Stand reenactment, an evening of pitchfork fondue and a barn dance, I even managed to learn a little bit!
After the first stop at the Midland Bull Test facility, I determined that I was going to learn a good deal about the Red Angus breed in a short week. Redland Red Angus was the next stop, where I got to see and learn about their operation and also compete in a few contests. At Fort Keogh, I learned about the genetics and science behind various breeds of cattle as well as various
30 American Red Angus Magazine â– December 2013
research projects in progress at the Fort.
Following the stop at the Fort we visited Roberts Red Angus Ranch where I saw not only a great looking herd of Reds, but some very interesting, curly-haired horses as well. At Milk Creek Reds, I saw some of the prettiest countryside on the whole trip and enjoyed a ride in horsedrawn wagons through the pastures. Back in Billings, tours of the Northern Ag Network television and radio stations and the NILE facilities were exciting and educational. I learned about semen collection and semen sexing at Genex. The Round-Up tours concluded with a stop at the Rock Creek Red Angus Ranch, were I saw and learned about their herd and facilities. Round-Up was a very exciting and new experience for me, and I definitely learned a great deal about various aspects of the Red Angus breed and met some great people. I am very thankful for the opportunity to attend Round-Up and for the sponsorship that made it possible. â–

Red Angus Influenced Cattle Please Breeder and Customers by Jennifer Carrico for American Red Angus Magazine
36 American Red Angus Magazine â– December 2013
Trait selection helps southwest Iowa cattleman Paul Jones get the cattle that will work for him and his customers.
“Through the years I have wanted cattle that calve easy and will perform after they are born,” he said. “It has taken some experience to know what to look for.” Jones’ herd originated as Hereford and black white-faced cows in the early 1970s. He purchased bulls to acquire a hybrid vigor for many years. Simmental was introduced into his herd throughout the 1970s and 1980s and, in 1993, Jones purchased his first Red Angus bull. Now his herd has a very strong Red Angus base, which has helped him have a herd exceling in the traits he likes. “I want bigger calves that look good and can perform – not just on the cow, but also after they are weaned and in the feedlot,” he said. Paul Jones believes in perpetuating cow families with good qualities such as calving ease, a docile nature and good udder structure.
He was fortunate with his first purchase to choose a Red Angus bull that proved to be outstanding. In years after, he purchased more bulls out of the same cow. And still today, he can trace a lot of his cattle back to that particular cow. “I believe in cow families. If a cow can continue to produce calves that pass on the quality traits, those are the cow families that should be multiplied,” he said.
Jones stressed the need for cows with a large pelvic area because pelvic area goes along with calving ease. His cows are mostly calved on pastures in Taylor County in southern Iowa, thus he wants them to calve on their own.
“I want them to calve on their own and have a docile attitude when they do, so we can make sure the calves are up and going,” he said. He also stresses good quality udders with smaller teat size, so calves don’t have problems getting colostrum and nursing the cows. Jones said a cow stays around his farm longer when they have a nice udder also.
Selecting for traits that make for easier management for both the animals and the people taking care of the animals is what Jones wants. Paul and his wife Margery only take care of the cows on the weekends. They rely on Kenny and Paige Beason and their children, Callie and Clell during the week.
American Red Angus Magazine ■ December 2013 37
Red Angus-Influenced Cattle Please Breeder and Customers “The Beasons do a great job of taking care of the cows and they are always willing to talk about what are the best options to care for the animals,” said Jones. Jones especially enjoys the help of Clell, as he has become a very good hand with the cattle, no matter what needs to be done. The 180 cows in Jones’ herd mostly calve in the spring, starting in early February. Dry conditions for the past few years have his cow numbers lower than in the past due to poorer pasture conditions, smaller hay inventories and later conceptions of cows. Each year about 100 yearling heifers are bred to sell in early December. Smaller groups of cows are also AI bred to sell in March.
Replacement heifers are purchased, looking for the same traits as the rest of the cowherd. These heifers are at least half Red Angus and are mostly selected for calving ease and growth.
Bulls are largely selected on their pedigree and the performance of the animals in their pedigree. Maternal traits are very important to Jones.
Clell Beason, right, along with his family, help Jones care for the cattle during the week. “I also need cattle that can survive on fescue. Fescue foot is a terrible problem. It’s kind of like diabetes in people, which I deal with. Poor circulation to the feet,” he said. “Some cattle can survive on fescue and others cannot.”
Jones also likes cattle that have growth, selecting cattle of a frame score of 6.0 or above. However, he doesn’t want them too big, as some of the cattle he has had in the past have had too much frame. He said it’s important to find a happy medium for the kind of cattle he wants.

Red Angus-Influenced Cattle Please Breeder and Customers He also studies EPDs on all the animals he keeps in his herd and the ones that are purchased, and looks for higher efficiency values for more consistency. Pelvic measurements are very important to him when selecting females. Large pelvic measurements are one of the selections he uses to help ensure cows and heifers will calve with ease. Most calves are born in the spring months. All male calves are castrated at birth. Calves born after May 1 and through the summer months are left with cows through the winter. These calves are sold on the grass market in late April or early May.
Exactly four weeks after the September vaccinations, the vet repeats the shots and the heifers receive their calfhood Brucellosis vaccinations. Calves are tagged with the Iowa Preconditioning Calf Program green tag before they returned to pasture. The spring-born calves are weaned in early November and started on a self-feeder. Steers are sold at auction in large groups in January, usually going to similar order buyers each year, and the heifers are continued on the self-feeders.
Calves receive their first vaccinations in early May. In early September – usually over Labor Day weekend – Jones will vaccinate the calves again and they also receive a Red Angus yellow tag at that time, which qualifies them for the Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program (FCCP). Over 1.5 million head are enrolled in the FCCP, which is the beef industry’s most experienced USDA-Verified Genetic, Source & Age Program. The FCCP’s yellow tag is recognized as the symbol of guaranteed Angus genetics and a trusted source for both feeders and packers. This program enhances the value of Red Angus genetics and builds a reputation on the marketplace as well.

LSF RAB Complete X7834 Reg#1385176
Complete was one of the first bulls that we collaborated with the RA Brown Ranch to offer genetics in our Fall Herdbuilder Sale. Complete was a bull that we chose for our own operation and this has been one of the stand out bulls in our herd bull battery. We have just 7CED, –3.0BW, 65WW, 99YW, 21MILK, 54TM, weaned our first set of calves 8ME, 12HPG, –3CEM, 15STAY, 0.49MB, 0.42RE out of Complete and those calves are easily found in every pen. This “mellow” yellow herd sire offers one of the most optimal breeding tabulations in the breed. Selling possession, call Ryan for pricing.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from all of us
Deniro was our selection of the Leachman bulls in 2011 and was the 3rd best feed efficiency bull out of 600 bulls on feed. This deluxe calving ease herdsire has produced uniform sets of progeny year after year in his young career. Deniro has progeny totals of 91 calves at birth with a 95 average birth ratio along with 88 weaning progeny 14CED, –6.2BW, 40WW, 75YW, 23MILK, 43TM, with a 98 average weaning ratio –1ME, 8HPG, 7CEM, 11STAY, 0.42MB, 0.58RE and 52 yearling progeny with a 99 average yearling ratio. LSF Conqueror 0026X Reg #1368793
Conqueror is one of the “stars” in the Genex sire lineup. This bull is through the roof when it comes to birth to yearling spread and then combine his numbers for milk, stayability and carcass and you have one of the genetic leaders in this breed. Progeny records have been incredible for this sire with 104 birth records with a 98 birth ratio, 91 weaning records with a 101 average wean14CED, –6.0BW, 66WW, 111YW, 24MILK, 57TM, ing ratio, 17 yearling records with 9ME, 7HPG, 5CEM, 12STAY, 0.89MB, 0.25RE a 102 yearling ratio and 14 ultrasound records with a 104 average IMF ratio. VGW Password 170 Reg #1444896
Password was our selection along with Genex Cooperative from the 2012 Westphal Red Angus bull sale. We felt Password was the best Oly 554T son that had been produced in Vic Westphal’s program. This long bodied extremely clean made sire is one of the up and coming calving ease bulls in the breed. In his first year, we recorded 25 birth records with 6CED, –3.9BW, 66WW, 109YW, 23MILK, 56TM, a 68 lb average birth weight 1ME, 10HPG, 2CEM, 12STAY, 0.75MB, 0.33RE with a 94 birth ratio and 24 weaning records with a 651 lb average weaning weight with a 99 weaning ratio. Password is going to be an exceptional female sire. The heifer calves that we have in this first group are at the top of their class for phenotype and feminity. Red Angus-Influenced Cattle Please Breeder and Customers “We have received some information back on steer calves after they are harvested, knowing they perform very well and the buyers have been happy,” said Jones.
Most heifer calves are kept to be bred, but Jones culls for disposition problems, as he wants his customers to be happy with their purchases. The heifers are then bred to Red Angus heifer bulls and are given vaccinations prior to the bulls being turned out. “Our intention is to sell the best problem-free heifers that can be found anywhere. The herd bulls that have sired
these heifers were picked from cow families with a history of large pelvic areas and high yearling weight EPDs,” he said. The group of bred heifers he sells in December is ready to start calving the first part of February, but he always tells the buyers to be prepared for calving to begin up to two weeks prior to that.
Cows are expected to take care of themselves for the most part, but are fed hay while also on pasture throughout the winter and early spring. He has planted rye as a cover crop for the first time this year after the corn was harvested, and cows can graze those fields through the first of March. He has done this after watching a neighbor successfully do this for many years. This provides cows with good nutrition and also is a conservation benefit to the ground and he hopes to continue this for years to come.
Controlled grazing also helps provide better grass production throughout the farm.
Jones develops and breeds his heifers, then markets them as commercial replacement females in December.
42 American Red Angus Magazine ■ December 2013
“We don’t do anything special or have fancy facilities, rather we just want to raise the kind of cattle we like and please our customers at the same time,” said Jones. “We have been very fortunate to do both for many years.” ■
Orion Beef Group
Ozark Bull and Female Sale March 1, 2013
Reputation Red Angus and Hybreds
Selling 100 Bulls and 50 Females White’s Livestock Center • Diamond, Missouri • 1 PM CST The Bulls and Females are born, raised and developed in the Midwest
Our Program
Ludvigson Stock Farms is a family operation established in 1954. Our roots are based in the commercial cow calf and cattle feeding sectors. We understand what is needed to be successful in these areas and it has shaped our breeding philosophies in the genetics that we produce.
Our Ozark Performance Group Our performance group is the who’s who of beef producers in the Midwest. From historic breed impact operations to some of the hottest young breeders in the industry today. We are like minded breeders that have the same vision for the breed and the industry. This is a program developed and managed by Ryan Ludvigson to offer the beef industry in the Midwest large uniform groups of Red Angus genetics.
Our Genetics We have established a breeding philosophy over the years that incorporates optimizing multiple traits without over emphasizing any single trait. We are now utilizing the patented Leachman $Profit Index that essentially takes our philosophy and ranks cattle on their ability to return a profit to our customer’s operations. Herd sires such as Night Calver, Nextpectation, Takeover and Saga are perfect examples of our genetics that balance all traits and produce least cost cattle with exceptional phenotypes.
Our Team The LSF team includes not only our family but our managers, cooperators and customers. It takes a team to remain competitive in the industry today and we value the input from all of our team members.
Our Key Members Ryan Ludvigson – is our main marketing representative and oversees the Ozark Performance Group. Park Ludvigson – is our main breeding specialist, managing our embryo collection and transfer program as well as our embryo export program. Clint Berry – is our main commercial marketing representative, helping our customers to market their Red Angus influenced feeder cattle and replacement females. Kirby Lane – is our expert “Ozark” consultant and cooperator that helps us to design and develop regional genetics that best fit the central region. Fischer Family Farms – develop our bulls to meet our high expectations. Cooperators – Historic as well as “hot” new operations (Wood, Diamante, Rhodes, Butcher and Braesch)
Our Bull and Heifer Development We develop our “Ozark” bulls at the Fischer Family Farms Development Center located near Butler, Missouri. The bulls are fed a high roughage ration designed to produce a 3.0 ADG with 0.2 of an inch of backfat. The bulls run in 1040 acre fescue pastures which allows for plenty of exercise and muscle development. The replacement females are developed on pasture with minimal supplementation. All of the cattle are developed for low input conversions.
Our Customers Our customers play an integral and ongoing part in our breeding program. It would be impossible for us to remain competitive without constant input by our customers. We have had many customers from Missouri and the surrounding states over the years and we felt like we could better serve their needs by developing bulls closer to their area. We have always bred our cattle to adapt to any environment but we feel that by developing bulls closer to our customers operations, we can be even more successful at providing a better product for our customers.
Seminars We will be holding several “toolbox” seminars in the “Show Me” state that will help our customers to put the right animal health, genetics and marketing “tools” in your “toolbox” to make them more competitive in this fast paced beef industry. Clint Berry along with Ryan Ludvigson will headline these seminars. Look for more information to come later in the month. If you have questions or would like to attend one of these seminars please contact us.
All bulls are being developed in 10-40 acre fescue pastures for added exercise and adaptability

Top 5 Reasons for Year-End Tax Planning
by Michael Flerchinger, CPA, The Nichols Accounting Group P.C.
Benjamin Franklin once said the only two things certain in life are death and taxes. Doing yearend tax planning won’t save your life, but it’ll surely help you defer a portion of your tax bill – which can feel like financial resuscitation. This is usually done by properly timing your income and deductions. While there are some ways to reduce taxes after your year-end has already passed, they are generally of limited use and not as powerful as prospective decisions. The following are five reasons why planning matters. 1. Tax bills to Uncle Sam have fewer zeros Meeting with your CPA before yearend will allow you to determine what your target net income should be and discuss the necessary steps that will allow you to arrive close to that figure. You might defer income, accelerate payment of expenses, or make a decision as to whether you should buy that new equipment in December or January. Although there may be a difference of only a few days, the tax savings you can realize by allowing it to offset income in the proper year may be significant. Your CPA can also help you understand what next year’s tax laws may look like, and help you determine how they may impact your situation.
2. Your books and records will be up-to-date Most ranchers have a calving season, a farming season and a haying season. Absent from that list is an “accounting season.” Sometimes, updating the financial records for a rancher is an afterthought. All too often, the extent of financial analysis of a ranch is doing a monthly reconciliation of the checkbook. If you have a goal with your CPA to do year-end tax planning, and commit to that goal, you’ll have more motivation to get your year-end financial records in order well before the New Year arrives. This leads to better planning by utilizing information that is timely and relevant, which lends itself to overall business decisions.
3. Planning may reduce your operating costs One opportunity many ranchers take advantage of is to pre-pay certain expenses for inputs such as fertilizer, chemicals and fuel. Although these items will not be consumed until the following tax year, they can be deducted, with certain limitations, on the current year’s tax return. As an added bonus, it is not uncommon for your local co-op or fuel distributor to offer discounts on these items for paying by a certain date, often times Dec. 31. From a practicality standpoint, it may make sense for you to lock in prices before year-end to hedge against possible future price increases, a win-win for business purposes and tax purposes.
4. Helps you manage cash flow & financing The more you can plan for the future, the more you can manage your future cash flow. When you do yearend planning on a continuing basis, you generally can hit your tax target within a similar range from year to year and you know what your tax burden will be. By avoiding spikes and losses, you actually save income and often self-employment tax. This will allow you to smooth your cash flows out from one year to the next rather than having a surprisingly large tax bill that may require you to access your operating line or capital reserves to pay a tax liability. 5. Plan for the children If you have children who plan to
48 American Red Angus Magazine ■ December 2013
attend college, you’ll likely be filling out financial aid forms shortly after the New Year has arrived. A big factor in how much financial aid your child will be eligible for will be dependent upon how much income you report on your most recent income tax returns. When income tax planning is combined with financial aid planning, you not only save taxes but you gain the ability to make decisions to target a particular level of income that will help maximize potential sources of financial aid.
Bonus Tip: Succession and overall business planning Year-end tax planning is only a small piece of the puzzle in running a successful operation. Year-end tax planning decisions should not be made in a vacuum where your only objective may be to reduce current year taxes. If you have a multi-generational ranching operation, the topic of succession and overall business planning should be occurring at least on an annual basis, likely with year-end tax planning. This does not necessarily have to occur with your CPA only, but should be occurring among those vested in the ranch’s success and the whole team of professionals they work with. Michael Flerchinger is a CPA with The Nichols Accounting Group located in Oregon and Idaho. They specialize in agribusiness tax planning and consulting.
