VOLUME 49, NUMBER 9

NOVEMBER 2013

Serving our customers for 68 years, with industry leading genetics and the highest quality cattle. Beckton Red Angus is the founding herd of the Red Angus breed. Started in 1945, it has since maintained the longest continuous performance testing and improvement program in the industry. Some Facts about the Beckton Herd: • Beckton is the #1 Herd in the breed for Stayability, and has been for many years. Eight of the top twenty sires for Stayability EPD in the entire Red Angus breed are Beckton Sires. High reproduction rate and cattle that work for their owners, rather than the other way around. • This has also been the #1 herd for Low Maintenance Energy requirements for many years. Six of the top twenty sires in the entire breed for lowest Maintenance Energy EPD are Beckton sires. No other cattle will do a better job cutting your cowherd maintenance requirement and saving you money. • The #1 herd for easy calving, with the best average Calving Ease EPD of any major herd. Fourteen of the top twenty sires in the breed for low Birth Weight EPD are Beckton sires. No other genetics come close. • Beckton bulls are leaders in total rate of growth, from birth to market weight. The average birth weight EPD of these sale bulls is minus 3.9, and the average yearling weight EPD is plus 78. Beckton cattle start with low birth weight and reach a high yearling weight - for marketability and less time and cost to market. TOTAL PERFORMANCE IN THE MOST ECONOMICALLY IMPORTANT TRAITS – High reproduction rate; high calving rate; less time and cost to market weight; and lower total feed inputs and feed costs. Plus 68 years of selection for the convenience traits – good dispositions – cowherd fertility – good udders and milk – and structurally sound cattle well adapted to both high elevation in the Bighorn Mountains, and dry Wyoming range conditions.

A Time to be Thankful

It is an honor and a pleasure to be bringing to you this month’s Board Commentary. As we are entering the fall – a time of the year when calves are weaned and crops are harvested – let us take time to give thanks for the many blessings that have been bestowed upon us this year. But before I address the season we are about to enter into, I would like to introduce you to our three newest Board members recently elected at our annual convention. Kylee DeVoe from Texas serving as Area 4 Director, John Langdon from North Carolina serving as Area 7 Director, and Kurt Rich from Iowa who now serves as Area 9 Director. I look forward to working with these very qualified and dedicated people on your Board of Directors this coming year. Also, I would like to thank Tom Woodward, Martin Morgan and Larry Ellison for their dedicated service to our Board and to our membership. Each of these men had an expertise that the Board valued when circumstances arose. Tom’s expertise was in Marketing and Breed Improvement, Martin’s was in Constitution and Bylaws, and Larry’s was in Finance. Larry did an exceptional job of guiding our Association’s finances. Thanks again for a job well done gentlemen. Another part of our convention that I look forward to is our annual Awards Banquet. This year we recognized many very deserving recipients, but my favorite is the Red Angus Breeder of the Year award that, in my mind, is like the Entertainer of the Year Award presented at the American Country Music awards. It is a top spot for recognizing the accomplishments of one of our breeders whose program has risen to the forefront of our breed. This year’s recipient was Chuck and Carol Feddes, Feddes Red Angus, of Manhattan, Mont. Chuck and Carol represent the values held dear to our membership – they exhibit honesty and integrity, and they are visionaries that make them leaders in our business. Thank You and Congratulations to Chuck and Carol.

Now back to the “Season” – We often talk about all of the challenges we face. But, let’s take time this holiday season to be thankful for all of the blessings we continue to receive. Let us be thankful for a loving God, thankful for our families, and thankful for the blessing of being the stewards of the best breed of beef cattle in the industry. Yes, I am thankful for my red cows. Life would somehow not seem complete without those red mommas roaming the pastures with their offspring tagging along. We are truly thankful each time a new calf is born. My dad used to say that each time a new calf hits the ground, that it was a creation of new wealth for our family as well as our country. He felt that as long as everyone who had a farm or ranch kept this in mind, it made our country and nation stronger. Many times I am thankful for his guidance and his wisdom. Just like I am thankful for the vision of our founding members. It was not just their experience as cattlemen and cattlewomen, but also their experience as businessmen and women that has been a guiding light that has served as the vision for our association for six decades. Their vision continues to guide the RAAA Board of Directors today with each decision that is made for our membership and stakeholders. I am also thankful for the mentors in our breed. These are different people for each of us, but their contribution is pretty much the same. They pass on knowledge, logic and the history of what has made Red Angus the “Successful Breed” of today. So you see, while we have government shutdowns, unrest in many parts of the world, and people who dislike our country, we as Red Angus stakeholders still have a lot to be thankful for. On behalf of your Red Angus Board of Directors, I would like to wish each of you a “Happy and Healthy Thanksgiving.” ■

Board encourages open communication

The 60th annual Red Angus National Convention held this past September in Montana was certainly a memorable one. More than 270 members attend this year’s event and were joined by commercial ranchers to combine for over 350 that participated in the Commercial Cattlemen’s Symposium.

The Red Angus Foundation dinner fed 86 Red Angus supporters who were entertained by the comedy of “Take Two Productions.” In addition to normal RAAA annual business and the recognition of award recipients, attendees had time to enjoy the local sites from the seats of the Charlie Russell dinner train. During the course of the annual meeting, Red Angus members engaged in a healthy conversation relating to RAAA programs, registration and category labeling of registered Red Angus cattle. RAAA staff brought members in attendance up-to-date on RAAA program performance, registrations and the financial state of the association. One message the membership transmitted to the RAAA Board of Directors is that stakeholders across the country want to continue to explore opportunities to open lines of communication between the membership and the RAAA national Board of Directors in order that all RAAA members may influence the decision-making process. That message resonated with the RAAA Board. As a result, we have constructed a questionnaire to provide RAAA members with an avenue to offer their direct opinions to our leadership. The questions relate to RAAA services and programs, and the input we receive will assist RAAA leadership in continuing our journey to secure more market share for Red Angus cattle.

8 American Red Angus Magazine ■ November 2013

The questionnaire will provide statistical analysis and membership opinions in the primary operational areas of RAAA. Red Angus promotions, marketing and breed improvement are all topics involved in the questionnaire. Members are also asked to express their opinions regarding registering animals at RAAA, the category system and perhaps, most importantly, to have the opportunity to provide opinions in all these areas aimed at assisting Red Angus bull customers. What is the purpose of the questionnaire and what will happen to the information once members provide feedback via the questionnaire? RAAA staff will compile data; concepts derivative of the questionnaire will be made available to the appropriate RAAA committee for examination. Each committee will in turn exercise their expertise in the examined areas to potentially recommend new concepts to the Board of Directors or streamline existing programs and services. The RAAA Board of Directors certainly encourages Red Angus members to thoughtfully respond to questions provided on the link in Member Data-REDS. This feedback is potentially beneficial and impactful to all of RAAA and its stakeholders as we look to strengthen the competitive position of Red Angus in the marketplace and maximize growth potential in the beef industry. Access the Questionnaire The questionnaire is available to active RAAA members by logging on to their Member Data-REDS home page. If you do not already have a password, please contact the Member Services Department to get one set up. If you are not a computer user, please contact the RAAA National Office and we will provide you with alternative options to answer the questionnaire. ■

Member Services Bulletin

Avoid Reactivation Fees! During the last week of October, RAAA sent its members a list of fall-calving females, which have been inactivated due to lack of calf data for 2012 or reason code why there is no calf record. If any of these cows on this list are still in the herd, submit their 2012 calf record or reason code by Dec. 1, 2013, to avoid reactivation fees. Board Approved – Changes to Rules and Regulations Section 7 Genetic Defect Policy Approved Addition

F.6 If at the time an offspring is submitted for registration, a parent is on hold for genetic defect requirements and an actual sample from the parent cannot be obtained, all of the following will apply: • Offspring must be tested for the same genetic defect tests required of the parent. • Owner must submit an affidavit with the reason why the parent is not available. Parent will remain at an “on hold” registration status. • Subsequent progeny submitted will be held pending review by the Chief Executive Officer. Happy Thanksgiving to all Red Angus members and stakeholders! The RAAA National Office will be closed Thursday, Nov. 28 and Friday, Nov. 29 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday.

14 American Red Angus Magazine ■ November 2013

Experiencing difficulties with Member Data-REDS when trying to submit calving information of 40 or more records? Contact Halla or Angelia to discuss a new option of submitting records via an Excel template designed by the department. The Excel file is not meant to replace Member Data-REDS, it is simply to offer an alternative for data submission of registration/performance update process. The Excel file will not have a checks and balances system like the popup errors members receive on Member DataREDS. Therefore data will be checked once it is received by RAAA and processed by staff. For example, warnings will not be issued for irregular calving interval or if the sire’s registration number is missing or invalid, etc.

2013 RED ANGUS NATIONAL CONVENTION LEWISTOWN, MONTANA

The 2013 Red Angus National Convention kicked off Wednesday Sept. 11, in Lewistown, Mont., sporting the theme “Diamonds in the Big Sky.” The Junior Red Angus (JRA) Board of Directors set up and hosted a silent auction fundraiser during convention, and on Wednesday morning, reported to the RAAA Board of Directors on past and future JRA activities.

The convention officially started with the Commercial Cattlemen’s Symposium at the Fergus County Fairgrounds. Participants judged pens of commercial cattle for a People’s Choice Award at the end of the symposium. Three speakers delivered their message as small groups rotated during the afternoon. Dr. Andy Roberts from Fort Keogh Livestock and Range Research Facility in Miles City, Mont., spoke on how different feeding methods affect heifer’s development. Larry Gran with Zoetis presented information on 50K genetically enhanced EPDs. John Onstead of CHS Nutrition explained how nutrition affects cattle before and after calving. The Commercial Cattlemen’s Symposium was open to the public and many FFA members, local ranchers and convention attendees participated. That evening the JRA Board of Directors held their board meeting and discussed 2014 Loaded 4 Leadership, 2014 National Junior Red Angus Show in Fort Worth, Texas, 2014 Round-Up which will start in Sacramento, Calif., and 2015 Round-Up. On Thursday, Sept. 12, the JRA Board attended the Junior Activities Committee (JAC) meeting, chaired by Raymond Prescott. The committee attendees discussed increasing membership involve-

2013 Junior Red Angus Board of Directors ment and growing the JRA membership, as well as the JRA S.W.A.T. analysis and Strategic Plan. The JRA Board presented the colors at the opening general session and attended all general sessions, meeting many Red Angus producers. That evening, convention attendees enjoyed the Charlie Russell Chew Choo dinner train through central Montana, a prime rib supper and surprise entertainment when the train was “robbed” by mounted bandits and show girls. Following the dinner train, JRA board members made s’mores for convention goers at the campfire in the courtyard of the Yogo Inn and world champion auctioneer and recording artist Kyle Shobe of Lewistown entertained with his guitar.

On Friday, Sept. 13, the JRA Board presented their Year in Review during the general session. After lunch, the JRA board announced the winners of the silent auction and thanked donators and buyers. Blairs.Ag Cattle Co. of Lanigan, Saskatchewan, Canada, purchased a wild hog hunt donated by Chain Ranch of Canton, Okla., Terry and Christina Pierce, Lost Creek Ranch, of Molt, Mont., purchased an original oil painted and donated by Jenny Robinson of Brush, Colo. During the awards banquet, Junior Programs Coordinator Dawn Bernhard, recognized former JRA President Alyssa Looney as the 2013 Outstanding Junior Red Angus member. On Saturday, the JRA board participated in officer training from former Montana State FFA officers Emily Muir and Amy Hager, toured Westphal Red Angus, and later wrote thank-you notes. The next JRA activity will be Loaded 4 Leadership in Denver, Colo, in January. Attending the 2013 Red Angus National Convention was a great experience. The JRA Board met many great supporters and they are grateful for the contributions throughout the year. ■

2013 RED ANGUS NATIONAL CONVENTION LEWISTOWN, MONTANA

“Diamonds in the Big Sky” sparkle at National Convention Red Angus members gathered in Lewistown, Mont., Sept. 10 – 13 to reconnect with fellow Red Angus breeders. Montana Red Angus Association members planned and hosted the convention, themed “Diamonds in the Big Sky.”

Commercial Producer Diamonds In staying true to RAAA’s Core Policies of providing the best service to our customers – commercial cattlemen – the convention kicked off on Wednesday, Sept. 10, with a free Commercial Cattlemen’s Symposium.

Over 325 adults and nearly 60 local FFA members attended to learn about beef industry technology, management practices and research. Small groups of attendees rotated between speakers throughout the afternoon. Attendees also viewed and judged pens of commercial cattle displayed by local ranchers for a People’s Choice cash prize award. The Ladies’ Symposium entertained women with a western fashion show, scarftying, wine tasting, beef recipes and appetizers and speakers.

A Diamond Year Interim co-CEO and Director of Added Value Programs Myron Edelman presented the State of the Association. Despite the declining national beef cow inventory, Red Angus is breaking that trend and gaining members and increasing registrations. “This not only indicates Red Angus is growing,” said Edelman, “but thriving.” The Strategic Plan challenges RAAA to grow its finances, and Edelman reported that the association has increased its net assets by almost 20 percent from the prior year. He attributed this strong financial position to supplying the necessary tools to Red Angus members and customers, and backing those tools with dedicated leadership and staff.

“We need to have a spirit of excellence,” Edelman challenged, “to continue the growth trend of the Red Angus breed and enjoy the success we have had over the past two decades – especially the last five years.”

Diamonds of Technology Core Policies of RAAA direct that “when science exists to make a genetic prediction more precise and reliable, the science is implemented;” and that “the RAAA actively seeks out and implements new technologies that are based on sound, scientific principles.” Larry Keenan, interim co-CEO and director of breed improvement, shared technology advancements during the Breed Improvement Committee report. He commended membership on their contribution to the ‘50K Discovery Project’ that was used to develop the RA50K. “It is our goal to supply our stakeholders with the most reliable genetic predictions,” said Keenan. “We are doing this by incorporating 50K DNA data into EPD calculations for increased accuracy, and increasing the numeric accuracies for interim EPDs.

Based on a third-party, unbiased evaluation performed by the University of NebraskaLincoln, Keenan compared the two 50K tests available to stakeholders – RA50K (RAAA) and PF50K (Zeotis). “In terms of describing genetic variation, the RA50K test is the most informative; however, stakeholders can use either test in confidence as both have been proven to be reliable and accurate,” said Keenan. Interim EPDs will now have a numeric accuracy instead of a “P” or “P+,” accounting for the accuracy of the animal’s parents’ EPDs and the animal’s contemporary group.

Despite the advancements in technology, Keenan said, “It is still critical that we continue to collect phenotypic data. The worst thing we could do is throw-away the scale.” He reported that the Angus Association of America has identified another genetic defect – Developmental Duplication (DD). Tests are available through RAAA and Zeotis, and DD will be treated in the same manner as other genetic defects.

Constitution and Bylaws Diamonds Barry Horsley, Tom Woodward and Kevin Miller presented the Board-proposed changes to the Constitution and Bylaws as mailed out to the membership in the 30-day notice.

“Diamonds in the Big Sky” sparkle at National Convention

“Critical mass is important to keep producers interested in our breed,” explained Horsley. “We increase critical mass by increasing market share which, in turn, puts more dollars into the pockets of our customers.”

Red Angus has room to capture a higher percentage of genetic market share. In order to increase saturation into the bull market, the Board felt the classification system of 1A, 1B, Cat. 2 and Cat. 3 was ambiguous and, if the nomenclature was adjusted, has the potential to be more user friendly and transparent for Red Angus customers and members. Four committees were involved in writing the proposed Bylaw change – Strategic Planning, Constitution and Bylaws, Breed Improvement and Registration Committees. Horsley reminded members there were two proposed changes: 1) Bylaws changes that would 2) allow for nomenclature changes in the RAAA category system.

RAAA members actively discussed the pros and cons of implementing the proposed changes to the Bylaws as well as the proposed nomenclature changes. When the ballots were cast, 75 members voted “no” and 29 members voted “yes,” defeating all proposed changes. “This has been a good process whether the proposed changes passed or failed,” said Woodward in regards to the discussion. “Let’s come back next year with good ideas that will enable our breed to gain critical mass.” Diamond Registrations Kevin Miller, chairman of the Registration Committee, discussed the progress and features of the new database named REDS Pro – Total Herd Data Solutions. After outlining some of the new features, Miller encouraged members to continue to share ideas and input. “It’s your database,” he said, “so we want to build it how you want to use it.”

The Registration Committee anticipates REDS Pro to be running simultaneously with the old database, Member Data-REDS, by Jan. 1, 2014, and to be officially released by July 1, 2014. Promoting Diamonds McKenzie Smith, media and public relations coordinator, presented the new Affiliate Grant Proposal systems as devel-

oped by the Promotions Committee. The Affiliate Grant Proposal system would replace current co-op advertising and enable Red Angus affiliate organizations to better plan their yearly promotion. Two levels are available – Level I under $4,000, and Level II over $4,000. The new application process will begin this fall with a Dec. 15, 2013, deadline for this year only. Future deadlines will be June 30 to correspond with the RAAA’s fiscal year. Marketing Diamonds Edelman presented the Marketing Committee report, stating RAAA sold 138,275 FCCP and Allied Access tags in 2012-2013, up from the previous year. The year-to-date FCCP/Allied Access enrollment is 11,825.

Special Red Angus Feeder Calf Sales will be promoted through RAAA and the livestock markets will also promote the sales to their contacts and local areas.

Edelman explained the changes in the ProCow program. Since 2010, the Pro-Cow label was a USDA-AMS enrollment for cows at least 50 percent Red Angus. This program will now be called Certified Red Cow. Pro-Cow is now a marketing tool to identify replacement-quality heifers. Only females enrolled in the FCCP will be eligible to be labeled as Pro-Cows, and producers can purchase white Pro-Cow tags or receive half of their FCCP tags with the ProCow logo imprinted on them. Show and Sale Diamonds Marketing Programs Coordinator Chelsea Tomascik presented the Show and Sale Committee report, announcing two new regional shows: Keystone International Livestock Exposition (KILE) and the Arizona National Livestock Show (ANLS). Nov. 15, 2013 is the entry deadline for the 2014 National Red Angus Show in Fort Worth, Texas, Feb. 1 – 2, 2014.

The Show and Sale Committee also reported that the Show Bull and Show Female of the Year Awards have been discontinued. Foundation Diamonds The Red Angus Foundation, Inc. (RAFI), chaired by Esther Fischer of Harlowton, Mont., organized the “6 For 60” raffle in honor of the 60th Annual Convention. Six Montana breeders each donated a heifer calf and Red Angus enthusiasts purchased tickets for a chance to win all six heifers.

“Diamonds in the Big Sky” sparkle at National Convention

When the final tickets were sold, RAFI was pleased to get within close proximity to their lofty goal of $60,000 – raising $59,200. Wildcat Creek Ranch of Newton, Kan., was the lucky winner and took delivery of the heifers during the NILE Show and Sale in Billings, Mont., in October.

future JRA events including Loaded 4 Leadership, the National Junior Show and the 2014 Round-Up.

Junior Diamonds The Junior Red Angus (JRA) Board of Directors played an active role in convention as well. They hosted a silent auction fundraiser, held a JRA Board meeting, presented their report to the general assembly, made s’mores around the campfire, participated in officer training and toured an area ranch. Fundraisers also included the sales of a wild hog hunt and an original oil painting.

Attendees also enjoyed the Charlie Russell Chew Choo dinner train through north central Montana, a campfire and musical entertainment from world champion auctioneer and recording artist, Kyle Shobe of Lewistown, Mont.

RAFI also hosted their second annual RAFI dinner at convention, serving Montana walleye and filet mignon. Attendees enjoyed personalized entertainment by “Take Two Productions.”

During the JRA Year In Review, Junior Directors reported on the Young Stockman Program, National Junior Show and RoundUp. They also updated RAAA members of

Diamond Fun Convention attendees enjoyed visiting and socializing. The Anniversary Committee displayed memorabilia, oversized pages from the The Histroy of Red Angus book, a PowerPoint of photos from past conventions, and decades of past magazines to commemorate the diamond anniversary convention.

The custom C. Sharps Arms rifle was auctioned off at the banquet. Shelley Newberry of Livingston, Mont., purchased the rifle with one-of-a-kind engraving for $10,000.

Collaboration is important for the beef industry by Sheyna Strommen for American Red Angus Magazine

As U.S. cattle numbers decline, and as consumers become more discerning, the beef industry will need to become better at building value at every stage of production. That was the main take-away message from a panel discussion sponsored by the Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) and its affiliate, the North Dakota Red Angus Association, Sept. 27, 2013, in Bismarck, N.D. RAAA Director of Added Value Programs Myron Edelman moderated the question-and-answer discussion between 300 cow-calf producers and panelists Mark Messer, a cow-calf producer from southwest North Dakota; John Butler, CEO of Kansas-based Beef Marketing Group (BMG); and Brad Brandenburg, director of procurement for Tyson Fresh Foods. While no one had the crystal ball, panelists agreed future successes will be determined by how well the industry, as a whole, works together to meet the demands of the end user and how value can be added at each segment of beef production.

With more than 1.5 million head enrolled, the FCCP is the beef industry’s most experienced USDA-Verified Genetic, Source and Age Program. The FCCP’s “Yellow Tag” is recognized as a symbol of guaranteed genetics and a trusted source for both feeders and packers.

Building Value through Alliances Butler said BMG, a co-op of smaller, family-owned feeding operations, is adding value by aligning its independent owners with suppliers and customers up and down the supply chain in ways that build efficiencies.

“To create efficiency at our feedyards, we have to work with ranchers that have the right kind of genetics, who practice the right kind of preconditioning and the right kind of animal health/care programs so that when the animals enter a BMG feedyard, we are not duplicating their work.”

Relationships with those ranchers pay dividends for feedyards. Butler highlighted a recent close-out of 75 head that had a $260 difference between the top- and bottom-end cattle in terms of value. “If I could understand where the top-end came from and develop a rela-

tionship with that rancher, I would, because those cattle make money.”

Butler’s comments underscore why programs, like the Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program’s (FCCP) Yellow Tag are becoming more important for ranchers – and feedyards – who want to establish long-lasting relationships and build value in their product, said Edelman. BMG cooperators are also looking at ways to build value for processors and end-users – several of which, like WalMart and Darton Restaurants, have toured BMG yards. “It’s important that we understand what those customers are looking for and that we translate those demands into our business,” he explained.

Building Value through Quality Brandenburg, who procures 140,000 head of fat cattle each week for Tyson said the industry will likely continue to shrink if some fundamental changes aren’t implemented. “In the 1970s, we designed a feeding industry that was based on $2 corn and high interest rates – which meant we had to do things quickly,” he said.

Today’s corn prices and interest rates may be telling us to do things differently. Both Brandenburg and Butler indicated that the beef industry’s ability to compete in the protein marketplace hinges on everyone in the production chain building value in beef’s strongest

Collaboration is important for the beef industry attributes: taste, flavor, juiciness, tenderness, overall quality and eating experience.

“We cannot compete with pork or poultry on feed-to-gain conversions, but we can outrun the pork and poultry when it comes to taste,â€? Butler said. “That is a strong attribute of beef, and if we can recommit to those high quality standards, then I feel we can compete even at these higher prices. Consumers will pay for it if they have a satisfactory eating experience every time.â€? “Talking about the supply chain, its long-term profitability and its ability to align to meet consumer demands are really befitting for Red Angus,â€? said Edelman, who pointed to the breed’s long-time focus on commercial and industry stakeholders. “We are proud to host this important discussion, to connect cow-calf operators with feedyards and processors so that each can better understand the ways in which they can build better beef.â€? â–

RAAA Director of Added Value Programs Myron Edelman, (standing at the podium) led a panel discussion on the future of the beef industry last month in Bismarck, N.D. Included on the panel were (L to R) Brad Brandenburg, director of beef procurement for Tyson Fresh Foods; John Butler, CEO of Kansasbased Beef Marketing Group and Mark Messer, a cow-calf producer from southwest North Dakota.

Beta-agonists – the controversy, the research, the impact

by Tracey Koester, ARA Editorial Coordinator (Compiled with resources and portions of articles published in Drovers CattleNetwork, Progressive Cattleman, Feedstuffs and FactsAboutBeef.com)

The feeding industry has been familiar with beta-agonists for the past 10 years and the added benefits of improved muscle conversion in the last days on feed. In the past few months, however, “beta-agonist” has become a buzzword to the rest of the cattle industry. Citing animal welfare concerns, Tyson announced they would no longer accept cattle fed the finishing supplement, Zilmax. That announcement triggered a domino affect with Cargill also suspending the purchase of Zilmax-fed cattle a few weeks later. The controversy has raised plenty of questions among producers, feeders and consumers. The Controversy Tyson Foods, Inc., America’s secondlargest beef processor, announced in early August that it was suspending purchases of cattle fed the beta-agonist Zilmax (zilpaterol).

In a letter to cattle feeders, Tyson indicated it would stop accepting cattle fed the growth enhancer on Sept. 6, 2013, as an interim measure while the company reviews animal welfare concerns related to the product. Tyson’s letter to feeders said, “There have been recent instances of cattle delivered for processing that have difficulty walking or are unable to move. We do not know the specific cause of these problems, but some animal health experts have suggested that the use of the feed supplement Zilmax is one possible cause.” Cargill announced later in August that it too would suspend the purchases of cattle finished on Zilmax, effective Sept. 30, even though it has not linked Zilmax to any specific incidents involving animal well being. The announcement came after Merck Animal Health, the manufacturer of Zilmax, announced in mid August that it would temporarily suspend sales of Zilmax in the U.S. and Canada to conduct further research on its impact.

The Research Merck pledged to implement a “fivestep plan to responsible beef,” committing to conducting a scientific audit and recertifying every feeder, nutritionist and veterinarian authorized to feed the popular additive.

According to a statement, suspending sales will allow the company sufficient time for the establishment of valid study protocols, the identification of feeders and packers to participate in the audit, and the creation of a third-party team to oversee this process and validate its results. “We remain confident in the safety of the product based on our own extensive research and that of regulators and academic institutions, and we are committed to the well-being of the animals that receive it,” said KJ Varma, Merck’s senior vice president for global R&D.

“This important step demonstrates our commitment to providing our industry partners with data that will reaffirm confidence in Zilmax. We sincerely regret that this situation creates business challenges for our customers but it is critical to ensure that this process is conducted appropriately and with rigorous scientific measures. After the five-step plan is completed, the results will be shared publicly.”

46 American Red Angus Magazine ■ November 2013

Beta-agonists, such as Zilmax (zilpaterol ) and Optaflexx (ractopamine), are feed additives that, when added to feed in small amounts at a specific time in beef animals’ lives, help cattle make the most of the food they eat resulting in more lean muscle instead of fat. All animal health products, including betaagonists, are reviewed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) prior to use in animals to ensure there are no adverse impacts on animal health. Products in this class generate different responses due to differences in their chemical structure, receptor site activity and the tissues they act on. (Resource: factsaboutbeef.com)

The Impact It has been forecast that more food must be produced in the next 40 years than in the prior history of the world to meet the needs of the growing world population. Furthermore, these increases in food production need to occur in an era of agriculture that is faced with greater regulations, reduced available land for production, dramatically increasing input costs and declining animal numbers. Overall, every aspect of agriculture production systems – specifically the cattle feeding industry – needs to continually be improving in efficiency and profitability if they are to remain sustainable.

Rising feed costs, lower cattle numbers and volatile markets all make cattle feeding a very risky business. In order to remain competitive and viable, it is essential that the cattle feeding industry utilize technology that will safely increase growth and efficiency in cattle.

For years, feeders have used growth promotants and feed additives to improve health and efficiency in cattle. Beta-agonist growth promotants are dramatically improving the performance and efficiency of feedlot cattle during the end of the finishing period. The supplement promotes heavier, leaner carcasses, therefore providing less expensive meat and healthier, lower fat choices for consumers. Zilmax sales in the U.S. and Canada totaled $159 million in 2012 – proof that beta-agonists add value to the bottomline. Industry estimates suggest that more than 70 percent of the fed-cattle population in the U.S. is fed one of two approved beta-agonists, Merck’s Zilmax and Elanco’s OptaFlexx. Beef marketed as naturally fed or organic have not received hormones, antibiotics or beta-agonists.

The beef cattle and feeding industries will remain focused on the outcome of Merck’s five-step plan to see what the future holds. Today’s beef increasingly meets consumer expectations for a great-tasting meal, and the entire beef community is committed to raising the highest-quality beef possible and consistently providing people with healthy, great-tasting beef. Whether or not beta-agonists will continue to play a role in the sustainability and profitability of the feeding industry will play out with the results of intensive research. ■

Member News In Memory Larry "Dan" Johnson Larry “Dan” Johnson, age 52, of Cushing, Iowa, passed away on Sept. 30, 2013, in Cushing, Iowa. A funeral mass was held on October 4, 2013, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Anthon.

Dan was born Feb. 26, 1961, in Cherokee, Iowa, to Larry L. and Shirlene (Paulsen) Johnson. He was baptized and confirmed at the United Methodist Church in Cushing. He graduated from Eastwood High School in 1979 and continued his education earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science and Ag Education from South Dakota State University in 1983. While attending college, Dan met the love of his life, Cheryl Mewes. They were married on May 26, 1984. To this union one daughter, Cassie Johnson, was born March 12, 1985.

Dan worked for Vet Provisions at the time of his death. He also was managing partner of Solution Genetics. Dan was very grateful for the commitment and support of his partners, Cheryl and Cassie, in growing Solution Genetics with international recognition showing national champion Red Angus cattle in Denver, Colo., Louisville, Ky., Ft. Worth, Texas, and Billings, Mont. He was a visionary, recognizing the maternal, fault-free traits of the Red Angus breed while yet possessing show ring eye-appeal. Dan and Solution Genetics have introduced these traits to many youth who will carry on Dan’s vision.

The North American Junior Red Angus Event was near and dear to Dan. As one of the founders, he took great pride in watching the youth of the beef industry grow into future leaders in the cattle business. He was an advisor for the Iowa Junior Limousin Association and Iowa Junior Red Angus Association, and served on the Red Angus National Show and Sale Committee. Dan’s passion for youth extended to the youth of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. In 1993, he and Cheryl raised
